ARNOLD, Calif. – Joyce Brown was 12 when her parents first took her to visit the “drive-thru tree,” a giant sequoia in California famous for a car-sized hole carved into the base of its trunk.

Brown thought she had entered a land of giants as she walked underneath and around the ancient 100-foot-tall tree, which was toppled by a massive storm Sunday.

“It’s kind of like someone in the family has died,” said Brown, a 65-year-old retired middle school teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area who spends about a third of the year at her family’s cabin in Arnold, about 4 miles from where the now-fallen tree lies dead in Calaveras Big Trees State Park.

Four generations of Brown’s family have spent countless hours at the tree and often took out-of-town visitors there, some from as far away as Turkey.

In May 2015, she and her husband showed off the tree to John and Lesley Ripper, a Michigan couple the Browns befriended on an African safari.

“I was blown away,” said John Ripper, a 55-year-old printer in Northville, Michigan.

ular tree and being able to walk underneath it and touch it was quite a memorable moment and something I won’t soon forget.”

Ripper said he can’t believe that a storm felled such a massive, sturdy-looking tree.

“In the blink of an eye, it’s gone,” he said.

“There’s this giant tree everyone remembers, and it’s going to be laying there in plain sight.

The dead giant.”

Sumner Crawford of Charleston, South Carolina, remembers every detail of his first visit to the tree as a kid in the early 1990s.

“I remember I was walking through the tree and thinking, ‘I’m inside of the tree right now!’ ” he said. “It was madness.”

Crawford, 36, was stunned by the sequoia’s size: When his family of four tried to join hands around the tree they discovered they couldn’t even come close.

“It was so different and so odd,” Crawford said, adding that he recently visited the tree again and relived those memories.

“I feel like it’s part of my personal history.

So it’s a bummer to see it go,” he said.

The tunnel that made the tree famous and ultimately weakened it was carved into its trunk in the 1880s to allow tourists to pass through, first with horses and buggies and later with cars. The tunnel was limited to pedestrians in recent decades.

Schools, service agencies face familiar uncertainty without state budget

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – Members of Illinois’ 100th General Assembly will be sworn in Wednesday and tasked with a job that lawmakers have been unable to accomplish for a year and a half – pass a state budget for an entire fiscal year.

Funding from a half-year stopgap budget that was passed in July ended Dec. 31, once again leaving groups such as higher education and social service agencies without state dollars at the start of the year.

Although a majority of programs are still being funded through court order and continued appropriations, these services may face a difficult 2017 without state aid.

BUDGET PROPOSAL

The General Assembly was scheduled for two lame-duck sessions Monday and Tuesday. One of the topics to be discussed is a bipartisan budget proposal from Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago, and Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont.

Under this budget, human services would receive $740 million while higher education would receive $1.1 billion.

The proposal also includes an income tax hike, minimum wage increase, local government consolidation, pension reform, soda tax,

State Rep. Robert Pritchard, R-Hinckley, said he wasn’t confident such a proposal could pass by the end of the lame-duck session, but was hopeful it could meet House approval.

“It’s interesting that we are starting to have some activity as the leadership feels the pressure from citizens and legislators that we have to do something, and pushing the leadership to have these discussions is one of the things I’ve been encouraging,” Pritchard said. “I’m hopeful that the legislation the two senators introduce will be a starting point to induce coalescence with the speaker to address the state’s problems.”

SOCIAL SERVICES

Several human service agencies in the area have faced the sting of not having state funding last year.

Family Alliance in Woodstock was owed roughly $180,000 last year before

the stopgap budget was passed, Executive Director Kim Larson said.

This forced the agency to cut four key positions and place a 90-day hold on any new clients coming in. Patients either had to wait or be placed in longterm care, which is typically around $4,000 more a month than the services provided at Family Alliance, Larson said.

After the stopgap funds were released, the agency still was owed $100,000 from the previous fiscal year.

Larson said Family Alliance may be looking at similar sacrifices by April or May. “The burden then remains on the family if [patients] have to resort to long-term care, who would have to make the arrangements for that loved one,” Larson added. “We need to know where we stand and we are not going to jeopardize the integrity of our program.”

Hope Haven, a service provider for the homeless in DeKalb, also received

half of the state dollars owed to them from fiscal 2016, or roughly $37,000, from the stopgap budget.

“We’ve had to tap into our reserves to ensure that we continue providing the programs and servicing without cuts,” Hope Haven Executive Director Lesley Wicks said. “It’s much more cost-effective to house the homeless than have them on the streets, so if we have to cut back, we would probably go to local community resources for funding.”

Wicks added that the organization relies on a very diverse source of funds, which helped to ease the cuts from last year at the state and federal level.

Fox Valley Older Adult Services in Sandwich, meanwhile, received all of the $720,000 owed from last year and is currently owed an additional $275,000 for this fiscal year, Executive Director Cynthia Worsley said.

“We’re just going to take things one day at a time, but with a payroll of $48,000 every two weeks, we can’t get along for too long,” she said.

In October 2015, the organization had to close its adult day care center in DeKalb, which has not been reopened, and had to delay paychecks.

Worsley said that about 30 percent of the FVOAS budget comes from localized contributions, such as donations, grants and senior tax levy dollars from Kendall and DeKalb counties.

2 face charges in DeKalb cocaine bust

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A man and woman face felony drug charges for trying to sell cocaine near the Northern Illinois University campus in DeKalb.

DeKalb police arrested Marcella K. Jasso, 33, of the 800 block of Market Street, DeKalb, and Michael A. Tune, 28, of the 1500 block of Hulmes Drive, DeKalb, on Saturday.

Both were charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

If convicted of the most serious charge, Jasso could face four to 15 years in prison. If convicted of the most serious charge, Tune, who has a criminal record, could face six to 30 years in prison.

DeKalb police received a tip that Tune Marcella K. was selling cocaine in Jasso DeKalb and that he had an outstanding warrant for aggravated battery. Through an investigation, police learned that Tune was going to sell cocaine at the Gideon Court Apartments, 1325 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, according to a police synopsis contained in

court records.

When Tune arrived at the apartment complex, police arrested him on the warrant.

They found a small amount of cocaine in his hat, court records show. He later told police that he had planned Michael A. to sell $50 worth of coTune caine and that he was delivering cocaine for the driver of the car, Jasso.

Jasso told police that Tune asked her to hold the cocaine. She handed police seven plastic bags containing about 5.29 grams of cocaine. Another small bag of the drug was found in

her bra, according to the police report.

Both face enhanced charges because the apartment complex where the sale was to take place is about 250 feet from NIU’s Physical Plant B at 120 Stadium Drive.

Jasso, who has no previous criminal history, was released Monday on a $10,000 recognizance bond, which means she did not have to post any cash.

Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert set bond for Tune at $100,000, noting his past criminal record and a pending parole hold that would likely send him back to prison.

Jasso is next due in court Jan. 31.

Tune is next due in court Feb. 22.

OBITUARIES DENNIS C. BENNETT Dennis C Bennett, 64, passed away peacefully on January 7th, 2017 at Bethany Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in DeKalb, IL. He was born in Sycamore, IL to Stanley “Jake” Bennett and Ruth Melton. Dennis married Maria Miranda on June 9, 1973 at the Genoa Methodist Church in Genoa, IL. He was a truck driver for Consolidated Freight in Garden Prairie, IL. He was an avid walleye fisherman and was a member of the A1 Walleye Fishing Club. He also was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and NASCAR. He enjoyed metal detecting.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Maria Bennett; 3 children, Stanley J. A visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at Kingston Cemetery following the service.

Pritchard said it is up to residents to put pressure on lawmakers to ensure schools are funded.

“There is growing pressure to do something well before May, but that again comes from how much citizen pressure will cause the system to do something,” Pritchard said. “That pressure hasn’t seemed to move the needle enough to get anything done, so there needs to be more for the sake of NIU and Kishwaukee College and not having MAP assistance.”

Johnson Controls in Sycamore transitions to spin-off company

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore office for Johnson Controls is now part of the company’s spin-off entity called Adient that supplies automotive seating and interiors.

Johnson Controls, a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Wisconsin, announced in January 2016 that its Automotive Experience business unit would become Adient, a separate, publicly traded company.

Other business units, including Building Efficiency, Global WorkPlace Solutions and Power Solutions, produce things such as automotive batteries and electronics and air conditioning, ventilation and heating equipment for buildings, among other products.

The division took effect in October, and the Sycamore location at 1701 Bethany Road is one of more than 20 Adient manufacturing facilities in North America.

Mayor Ken Mundy said Johnson Controls has been a strong employer for the Sycamore community and an important part of

the local economy for about 30 years.

He said the company also has demonstrated that it is “plugged into the community,” as the facility has offered its cafeteria for Sunday Mass to a local church that was damaged in a fire.

“It’s indicative of how community-minded our companies are,” he said.

Mundy said it is encouraging to see the company’s progression.

A phone call to Adient’s American media contact was not returned by press time Monday.

Johnson Controls employs 130,000 people at 2,000 locations worldwide, according to its website.

Johnson Controls also announced last January that it was merging with Tyco International, a security systems company in Ireland, to form Johnson Controls International PLC, according to the website.

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate’s plan to end the nation’s longest state budget deadlock fizzled Monday after Republicans declared they wanted more time to ensure Gov. Bruce Rauner’s demands are met before approving a tax increase.

The Senate’s planned action would have been symbolic. Democratic President John Cullerton and Christine Radogno, the Republican leader, knew there wouldn’t be time in the Legislature’s last two scheduled work days to push the package through the House and get it to Rauner.

But Cullerton and Radogno were hoping to distinguish the Senate from what has become a nasty battle of wills between Republican Rauner and House Speaker Michael Madigan. Madigan, the resolute Chicago Democrat who has run the House for most of the last three decades. Rauner insists that lawmakers pass some of his reforms aimed at helping business and reducing the influence of labor unions. Madigan says Rauner’s demands have nothing to do with the budget.

“We’re two years in and we don’t have a budget,” Cullerton said. “It’s embarrassing for the state and there’s been real damage that has happened to

Legislation would require schools to test for lead

CHICAGO – Illinois elementary schools and day care centers would have to test drinking water sources for lead and notify parents of the results under legislation proposed Monday.

Schools and care facilities would be responsible for the cost of the one-time testing, which environmental experts estimate could run from $500 to $5,000 per facility. The plan, unveiled as lawmakers gathered for the final days of the current legislative session, would apply to all public and private schools with students up to grade 5 and facilities built before 2000.

The proposal follows the lead-tainted water crisis in Flint, Michigan, which shed light on the dangers of lead contamination.

Cullerton pledged to present the plan to the new General Assembly. Radogno said the goal is to move quickly, to get Senate approval before month’s end.

The legislation would have increased the personal income tax rate to 4.95 percent from 3.75 percent to narrow a multibillion-dollar annual deficit and $11 billion in unpaid state bills. But

it would also have included a streamlining of purchasing, local government consolidation, reform of the tax code and limits to lawmakers’ terms. Those ideas could meet Rauner’s desire to make business and political climate changes to boost business and taxpayer confidence in the state.

Obama gives Chicago $1B for transit as he leaves office

CHICAGO – Chicago is to receive more than $1 billion from President Barack Obama’s administration to help modernize the city’s Red and Purple lines as part of a public transit construction project to create an estimated 6,000 jobs.

The funding was finalized Monday, a day before Obama is scheduled to give his farewell address in his hometown. Officials from Chicago and Illinois took the opportunity to thank Obama for not forgetting his roots during his time as president.

“Tomorrow, the president is going to come here to thank Chicago,” U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said during a Monday morning news conference announcing the funding agreement. “Today I want to make sure that we thank him. Time and again the Obama administration has not forgotten where he came from.”

BBB warns about Obama speech ticket scams

CHICAGO – The Better Business Bureau is warning against buying tickets to President Barack Obama’s farewell speech in Chicago on online marketplaces.

Tickets were handed out for free on Saturday morning in Chicago, prompting thousands of people to wait for hours in single-digit temperatures. Obama’s speech is scheduled for Tuesday night at McCormick Place.

The Chicago Tribune reported that by Sunday auctions were posted on websites such as eBay and Craigslist asking for as much as $5,000 apiece for the tickets.

Radogno said. The current Legislature ends its session Tuesday and a new one is seated Wednesday, so there would be no time to move the proposal to the House.

The state has limped along since the middle of 2015 without an annual spending plan. State government has functioned largely because of court-ordered spending on social services and periodic appropriations by lawmakers.

But more than 1 million people have been cut from services such as mental health treatment, elderly care, domestic violence assistance and cancer screenings, as well as financial aid for college, and the state’s financial ratings have dropped.

With a temporary, six-month budget having expired Jan. 1, the House approved a measure providing what sponsor Rep. Greg Harris called a “lifeline” for education and social services.

The Chicago Democrat’s plan would take money coming in from income tax revenue and provide $258 million for social services and $400 million for higher education, including $191 million for the popular, income-based Monetary Award Program for college tuition.

Rauner’s office said the governor opposes that plan unless it is accompanied by other things he wants, such as a property tax freeze.

It’s unclear whether those tickets are legitimate or can legally be sold.

Steve Bernas, president of the Better Business Bureau of Chicago and Northern Illinois, warned against buying the tickets, saying “there’s no way to verify these tickets.”

UnitedHealth buying Surgical Care for $2.3B

NEW YORK – UnitedHealth Group is buying surgical center operator Surgical Care Affiliates for about $2.3 billion in a cash-and-stock deal that will add to its outpatient holdings.

The Minnetonka, Minnesota-based health insurer will add Deerfield, Illinois-based Surgical Care to its Optum health services unit, which has 20,000 affiliated physicians and hundreds of facilities. Surgical Care operates 205 surgical facilities and partners with about 3,000 physicians. The acquisition will be funded with between 51 percent and 80 percent of UnitedHealth stock. The remainder will be in cash.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Iraq war veteran held in the fatal shooting of five people inside Fort Lauderdale’s airport was appointed a federal public defender on Monday after telling a judge that he has no job and only $5 or $10 in the bank.

Esteban Santiago, 26, spoke clearly during a brief hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Alicia Valle, who ordered him held until his next hearings.

Shackled in a red jumpsuit in the heavily guarded federal courtroom, Santiago answered mostly yes or no to questions, and told the judge he understands the charges, which include committing violence against people at an international airport resulting in death, and two firearms offenses.

She told him the death penalty could apply.

“We are telling you the maximum penalty allowed by law so that you understand the seriousness of the charges,” the judge said.

He said he had been in the Army, where he made about $15,000 a year. He mentioned expenses including $560 in monthly rent, plus phone and other utility bills. He said he owns no property and doesn’t have a vehicle. He said he had worked for a security company, Signal 88, in Anchorage, Alaska, until November, making $2,100 a month, but currently only had $5 to $10 in the bank.

Given his finances, the judge decided he’s eligible for government lawyers at taxpayer expense.

Valle set a detention hearing for Jan. 17, followed by an arraignment for entering a plea for Jan. 23.

More than a dozen officers kept watch outside the courthouse, carrying rifles and wearing bulletproof vests.

Santiago is accused of fatally shooting several people at a crowded Florida airport baggage claim and faces airport violence and firearms charges that could mean the death penalty if he’s convicted.

The charges don’t specifically use the word murder, but the effects of one of the gun charges and the airport charge are the same because they cover actions that result in a person’s death and can result in capital punishment, former federal prosecutor David S. Weinstein said.

“Under federal law, there are many statutes that cover the killing of another human being and unlike state statutes, they are not specifically titled murder. But the elements of the crime and the definition of murder are the same,” he said.

State authorities could file first-degree murder charges against Santiago, but that’s unnecessary for now, Weinstein added, because there is no statute of limitations on murder. If something were to go wrong in federal court, the state could then proceed against him, he said.

No links to international terrorism have been found, the FBI has said. But if they surface, federal prosecutors could obtain an updated grand jury indictment to add terror-related charges, Weinstein added.

“Their focus right now will be on the existing three charges and the continuing

investigation,” he said.

Santiago has been in custody since Friday’s shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The FBI said Santiago flew on a one-way ticket aboard a Delta flight from Anchorage to Fort Lauderdale. The 11½-hour flight has a 2½-hour layover in Minneapolis, one of the longest itineraries within the U.S. He checked a single piece of luggage: a gun box for his Walther 9 mm semi-automatic pistol and two magazines of ammunition, according to an FBI affidavit. Agents say he retrieved the box in baggage claim and loaded his weapon in a bathroom stall before opening fire on fellow passengers, killing five and wounding six others.

In November, Santiago walked into an FBI field office in Alaska with a handgun and his infant child, saying the U.S. government was controlling his mind and forcing him to watch Islamic State group videos, authorities said.

Officers seized the weapon and local officers took him to get a mental health evaluation. His girlfriend picked up the child. On Dec. 8, the gun was returned to Santiago.

SYCAMORE – A home decorating and furniture store could fill a long-standing vacancy in downtown Sycamore.

Laura and Ron Bright of Sycamore plan to open a store called Whimsical Perspective that will sell American-made home decor, hand-painted furniture, flea market finds and other products.

The store is set to open in March in the formerly vacant space at 366 W. State St., Sycamore, near the intersection of California and State streets.

Developers Andrea and Stewart Hepker were set to open their first restaurant called Monocot at the location in September, but they did not go through with their plans and received a refund of their liquor licensing fee from the City Council in December.

The 174-year-old building was once a hotel and has historic roots in the city.

Laura Bright said she posts on her blog about her painted furniture and creative home projects with her husband, and the blog’s popularity landed them a feature in Romantic Homes magazine.

“We hope to take that creativity and energy to the new home of Whimsical Perspective,” she said.

She also has experience selling items at Carter’s Cottage Interiors in DeKalb and as a vendor at the Kane County Flea Market, and she hopes the

She said opening a store has been their dream for years, and they decided to “take the plunge” once they saw a location open in downtown Sycamore that seemed perfect for what they wanted to do.

Bright said the store will not have much work to sell from local artisans, as many of them already sell in other Sycamore and DeKalb stores.

However, it is important that the store sells products made by American artisans, such as jewelry, greeting cards, soaps, clothes and other gift items.

“I’d love to give back in a way that’s good for the community,” she said. “I can’t wait to be able to walk to work through Sycamore.”

A repeal and retreat disaster Republicans last week kicked off their dominance of Washington by vowing to push through an unpopular and unwise unraveling of the Affordable Care Act, an imperfect law that nevertheless has done much good. Scaling back the policy is “the first order of business,” Vice President-elect Mike Pence promised after a strategy meeting on Capitol Hill. At the same time, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, pledged that Republicans would not pull the rug out from under people currently benefiting from the plan.

How can Republicans keep both promises? Better not to ask them. They seem to have no clue.

After last year’s election, Republicans first floated the idea of “repeal and delay” – that is, formally canceling large pieces of the law while delaying the phaseout for perhaps several years, giving Congress time to pass a replacement. At first blush, this sounds reasonable (if wrongheaded). It is in fact unworkable.

The ACA depends on private insurers participating in competitive state insurance marketplaces. Without government incentives, and with no reason to believe their time and effort will pay off under a nebulous new policy down the road, insurers will not continue serving markets that are in any case set to disappear. To avoid a repeal-and-delay disaster, Republicans would have to pour money into Obamacare, a move they ardently opposed when the goal was fixing the program rather than tearing it down. Bottom line: Without a replacement plan passed and in place at the time of repeal, policy uncertainty will drive insurers to quit the markets and desert their patients.

Despite agitating for repeal for the past half-decade, Republicans have failed to unite around any Obamacare alternative, and they do not appear close now. Detailed proposals that have circulated among Republicans over the past several years almost certainly would result in a much skimpier system – covering fewer Americans and degrading the quality of coverage for low-income and sick people who manage to buy it.

Republicans are bumping into some awkward facts, where ideology cannot repeal basic logic.

There is no health care reform that will lower premiums, cut deductibles and increase choice all at the same time, despite President-elect Donald Trump’s rhetoric.

The only way for Ryan to keep his promise is for Republicans to shore up the system, not engage in repeal and ... whatever.

Commenters blend fact, fiction There’s a section in the nearly 600-page 2016 edition of The Associated Press Stylebook – a journalist’s bible to all things writing and reporting – that warns against mistaking the internet for an encyclopedia.

The excerpt reads: “The internet is a sprawling information repository. Anything you find should be assessed and vetted with the same care that you use for everything else. ...

Be especially careful about websites and social networks that allow anyone to contribute text, photos and other information.”

We encourage – better yet, challenge – you to employ the same pause in thinking in your daily life.

In the world of social media and online commenting, fiction and fact often are blended, generating a fast-moving flow of news that works like the age-old

game of “telephone” on a much larger level.

In news stories, we do our best to deal in facts by verifying information with highly reliable sources.

If it doesn’t come on the record from a trusted source, it isn’t reported.

In crime, there are police and prosecutors who provide information. There are arrests and charges filed. Court documents are public record and citable forms of information.

In government, there are city officials, public documents and meetings from which we routinely generate stories.

Often we report on fluid situations where the story changes or develops on a day-to-day or even hour-to-hour basis. As we confirm information in those cases, we report it. We post these stories to our website and

then share them to social media to get the confirmed information out.

In recent weeks, though, we’ve been troubled by the unconfirmed and even wild accusations that have made it back to us in the form of online comments to these stories.

These often baseless claims are harmful.

They are so often not factual and yet are spread to others by those who read them as in a game of “telephone.”

By the end of the line, who knows what’s true and what’s not?

In a time where nearly everyone has a social media voice, it’s up to you what kind of information you want to spread. And to those reading social media for updates, please heed The Associated Press’ advice.

Madigan becoming Rauner’s white whale Back in December, Gov. Bruce Rauner was asked by a Chicago TV reporter whether he planned to run for re-election. Rauner said he wasn’t focused on such things.

Three days later, Rauner contributed $50 million to his campaign fund.

So either he suddenly focused himself on the 2018 campaign, or he simply wasn’t telling the truth.

Rauner does this a lot. Whenever he’s been asked about the Illinois Republican Party’s blistering post-election campaign attacks tying Democrats to House Speaker Michael Madigan, Rauner has said he doesn’t pay attention to that stuff – alhough he has given his party almost all of its funding during the past year and he often has referred to himself as the leader of the state party and put his own people into positions at the party.

Look, all politicians play with the truth. But this is getting to be a bit too much to bear because these actions are at the very core of what Rauner is doing as governor.

You will recall some of Rauner’s buddies set up a huge and ostensibly Democratic political action committee (IllinoisGO) right around the time Rauner was inaugurated in January 2015.

That campaign committee was solely

In June 2015, the governor launched an expensive statewide TV advertising campaign attacking Madigan, blaming him for the failure to cave to the governor’s demands for pro-business/ anti-union reforms in exchange for a state budget solution.

Shortly thereafter, Rauner moved into the primary season, spending millions more. And then he started spending real money on state legislative races in June 2016, an unheard-of early start date that actually came while lawmakers still were in session. Rauner began paying for Chicago broadcast TV ads for Rep. Mike McAuliffe, R-Chicago, in early August, also an unheard-of start date. And the governor launched a TV ad touting his support for term limits, a not-so-subtle dig at the House Speaker’s record longevity.

Republican candidates picked up four House seats during last year’s campaign. But days after the election ended, the state GOP launched a new

website, BossMadigan.com. The site is filled with profiles of Democrats who the Republicans say are really just Madigan’s pawns.

This is still a free country, and Rauner can do whatever he wants. The House Speaker is, after all, notorious for holding floor votes on ridiculously political bills. Madigan must’ve forced Republicans to vote against a phony “property tax freeze” bill 15 times to bash them with their own votes during the campaign. And this Madigan stuff goes back decades. We’ve always been in constant campaign mode in Illinois.

Rauner simply is upping the ante with actual year-round campaign spending.

So for the governor to deny involvement or knowledge of campaign activities when his entire organization and others around him have been deeply in campaign mode since Day 1 defies credibility. This is not an ancillary activity.

To put it as simply as possible, Rauner has used campaign tactics to try to force a wedge between Democrats and Madigan. That’s what IllinoisGO was supposed to be about – an alternative source of campaign money for Democrats who defied Madigan, or a bludgeon against those who stuck with him.

Everything Rauner has done since then

has had the same two goals regarding Madigan.

And yet, when asked again about this topic just last week, Rauner said, “I’m not getting involved in any of the General Assembly’s decisions on their leadership.” Right.

But this obsession with Madigan means Rauner has defined his own term in office as a crusade against the Great White Whale. Yes, there is plenty of public support for that. Madigan is the least popular politician in this state, and perhaps in the entire country.

“Moby Dick” didn’t end well for the pursuer, however. Madigan’s top people have been saying for more than 18 months they know they can’t move their own guy’s poll numbers up very much, so their plan is to drag Rauner down to Madigan’s level. Rauner eagerly has followed Madigan into that rabbit hole and failed to accomplish much of anything else in the process.

At last check by a Republican pollster, the governor’s favorable rating was 36 percent, with an unfavorable rating of 48. He’s gonna need every bit of that $50 million, and a lot more.

Government by faculty lounge subject to repeal President Barack Obama went up to Capitol Hill on Wednesday to counsel congressional Democrats on how to save Obamacare. Or at least that’s how his visit was billed.

But to judge from the responses of some of the Democrats, his advice was typical of the approach he’s taken to legislation in his eight years as president – disengaged, above the fray, detached from any detailed discussion of how legislation actually works.

He was “very nostalgic,” said Louise Slaughter, a veteran of 30 years in the House and the ranking Democrat on the House Rules Committee. But, she added, he left it up to Hill Democrats to come up with a strategy to protect Obamacare.

This is in line with the standoffish relations Obama has had with members of Congress, even with Democrats who are inclined to be and capable of being helpful. Schmoozing with those he gives the impression of regarding as his inferiors has not been his style.

Nor has he ever seemed interested in the content of laws, even his trademark health care legislation. His February 2010 decision to move forward on Obamacare despite the election of Republican Sen. Scott Brown in Massachusetts meant accepting a bill with

VIEWS Michael Barone multiple flaws, many of them glaringly visible after passage.

But policy just hasn’t been his thing.

At the Hill meeting, Obama – according to Massachusetts Democrat Bill Keating – was “basically saying, ‘Let’s not get down into policy language.’” The key word there may be “down.”

The problem with this approach has been apparent since the 9 o’clock hour on election night, when it became clear that Donald Trump was going to be elected president. In 2010, Obama assumed there always would be a Democratic Congress to repair any glitches in Obamacare. In 2016, he assumed that there would be a President Hillary Clinton to keep his pen-and-phone regulations and “guidances” in place.

It’s apparent that Obama is thrashing around trying to keep his policies in place. But more than those of other outgoing presidents replaced by successors of the other party, they’re in danger of being overturned.

One reason is that they were never firmly established in the first place –

and not just because the Democrats’ 60-vote Senate supermajority existed for only eight months, from July 2009 to February 2010.

Rather, the Obama Democrats’ policies, passed through slapdash legislation or through questionably legal regulations, never really captured the hearts and minds of the American people.

Obamacare was based on the shaky premise that mandating often expensive and limited health insurance would be seen as guaranteeing good health care.

As a result, as historian Walter Russell Mead recently wrote for The American Interest, “it did not generate enough public support to protect itself from its opponents.”

Rules imposed on coal and other fossil-fuel production – instituted after Democrats, even with strong congressional majorities, were unsuccessful in passing cap-and-trade bills – failed to impress a population that did not share liberals’ faith that climate change is certain to produce catastrophe.

Public policies prove to be enduring when they address what people regard as genuine needs and thus create constituencies that politicians dare not defy. Social Security retirement benefits are a prime example. You can jigger the taxes and benefits, as a bipartisan ma-

jority did in 1983, but voters who believe they paid for their benefits will insist they not be taken away.

Policies that induce long-term reliance also tend to endure, a prime example being the home mortgage interest deduction. There’s a good argument that this policy unduly benefits the affluent. But that argument doesn’t move most voters.

In my view, Obama owed his election and re-election to the feeling – widely shared by Americans, including many who didn’t vote for him – that it would be a good thing for Americans to elect a black president.

What they didn’t expect, but got, was a president who governed according to the playbook of campus liberals, imposing – or attempting to impose – policies that he believed would be good for people, whether they knew it or not.

This was governance that was both inattentive to detail and law and out of touch with how policies affect people’s lives. That is why so many of these policies seem headed for history’s ash heap.

Providing the ‘little things’ Junior Nolan Govig more than just a scorer for 13-2 Timberwolves

jseverson@shawmedia.com SHABBONA – Indian Creek senior guard Trevor Guerra brought the house down last week when he made 3-pointers on four consecutive possessions in a blowout win over Leland-Earlville.

The Timberwolves’ crowd got louder after each 3 that Guerra buried.

However, while all eyes were on Indian Creek’s leading scorer, junior center Nolan Govig was making things happen in the shadows – like he’s done all season. Whether it’s a pass, a screen, a cut or whatever else that is needed, Govig has provided the little things that have helped make the Timberwolves 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the Little Ten heading into their game at Oregon at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

“It’s great having Nolan,” said Guerra, who leads the Timberwolves in scoring, averaging 18.7 points a game. “He’s an all-around player – he can score on the offensive end, but what I like most about him is what he does off the ball. He does the little things that nobody actually sees. Nobody is going to say, ‘Nice screen! Way to cut and get that guy open!’

That’s what he does. He does that for me all the time.

I wouldn’t be as good of a shooter if it weren’t for him getting me open.”

During Guerra’s stretch of four 3-pointers, Govig delivered a perfect assist on one and provided the screen to open up the shooter on two others – including one at the buzzer of the first quarter.

“That’s all coach. That’s what coach implements in practice, so that’s what we run,” Govig said of his willingness to provide the screen that leads to the open shot.

Govig is more than capable offensively, though.

Against Leland-Earlville – a 73-40 win for the Timberwolves – he finished with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

“That’s him, that’s him every game,” Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz said. “That was nothing extraordinary, that was nothing out of the ordinary.

That’s what we get from him every game.”

On the season, he’s averaging 11.1 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists a game, while shooting 59 percent from the floor and 74 percent from the freethrow line.

“There’s times where we have to tell him to shoot more, because he can score,” Piekarz said. “He’s usually a quiet 10 or 12 points because he’s doing other things. He enjoys being a part of a winning team and he knows if he does the little things, that’s going to give us the best chance of being a good team.”

Defensively, the 6-foot-4 Govig also averages a block per game. His height isn’t the only benefit for the Indian Creek defense. Govig’s mobility after a defensive stop also allows him to run the floor and

Late in the third quarter against Leland-Earlville, with the Timberwolves leading by 30 points, Govig’s motor was still running on high. In less than a minute, he came up with a pair of easy transition layups

that came simply from his willingness to run the floor.

“We’re very spoiled to have that and we have guards who have their eyes up,” Piekarz said. “If he runs the floor, they’re going to look for him and reward him, and then he rewards them right back.”

Northern Illinois freshman Paulina Castro gathered her teammates on the women’s basketball team together in the locker room during winter break.

She told the Huskies that the fears from the previous week had become a reality, and VIEWS she was diagnosed with Jesse Hodgkin’s Severson lymphoma.

The Huskies came together – tears pouring onto the locker room floor as they embraced Castro with an emotional group hug – and they knew what to expect from the freshman.

She is going to fight.

“We make a conscious effort to not allow any negativity,” NIU coach Lisa Carlsen said. “We don’t talk about, ‘What if?’ We talk about, ‘When’s the next treatment? How you feeling?’

Paulina will tell you, ‘When’s the next game? When’s the next practice I can come to?’ We can’t be a bystander. We have to be actively involved in the positive approach to what she’s trying to do.”

During the Huskies’ 88-80 victory over Ohio on Saturday at the NIU Convocation Center, the Huskie players wore purple ribbons in their hair, wore warm-up shirts dedicated to Castro – saying “No one fights alone” on the front and “#PCStrong” on the back – and even Carlsen showed her support with a purple shirt and a streak of purple dyed into her hair, the color for lymphoma awareness.

As far as Castro, who graduated from Elgin Harvest Christian, she sat on the bench – her hair buzzed short – and scribbled team stats during the game.

Cancer or no cancer, she’s still part of the team.

“She’s got stuff to do, we’ll put her to work,” Carlsen said. “I think her being here and a part of what we’re doing in any way, shape or form is good treatment because it gives her, one, a break from thinking about it, two, an opportunity to be around people she loves to be around, and she’s not just sitting around thinking about poor me.”

One of the obvious displays of support for Castro, who was not made available for this story, came from senior point guard Ally Lehman. The face of the program, Lehman decided to buzz her hair in solidarity to Castro in the days leading up to the Ohio game.

The team’s leader in assists this season, dishing out 7.1 a game, Lehman provided her most significant assist of the season with her “we’re in this together” statement.

While on a team trip at Bowling Green, NIU assistant coach Kierra McCleary – who also shaved her head in support – asked Lehman whether she wanted to as well. Lehman, who had been mulling over the idea since Castro sent players a Snapchat photo of herself with a shaved head while the team was on the trip, responded emphatically. “[Heck] yeah, I want to shave my head, what kind of question is that?” said Lehman, who ended up getting the hair cut at a salon in Sycamore late last week. “Of course I do. It’s such a small thing to do.”

Castro came to NIU after a stellar prep career that ended with her averaging 20.8 points a game her senior

year at Elgin Harvest Christian. She was redshirting as a freshman this season and had an issue with her hip that Carlsen said they thought would require surgery.

According to Carlsen, the testing that was done put a cloud of uncertainty over her diagnosis. Carlsen said that Castro had a bone biopsy on a Monday, a bone marrow biopsy on Tuesday and a positron emission tomography (PET) scan on Wednesday.

Two days later, she had her first round of chemotherapy.

“Paulina has really been the one to decide the timing and really been so strong in what she’s told them,” Carlsen said. “She just lays it out there. This is what it is, this is what the plan is, it’s go time. ... Let’s figure out how to beat it, let’s figure out how to attack it.”

There is no such thing as a convenient time to be diagnosed with lymphoma.

The Huskies are 10-4 overall this season – and 3-0 in conference for the first time since 1993-94 – and play an entertaining, fast-paced style of basketball. They are averaging 90.6 points a game, which is the second most in the nation, and are coming

off a victory over a Bobcats team that won the MAC regular season the past two years.

It appears, three games into conference play, that this could possibly be a special season for a team that hasn’t had a winning season in a decade.

The difficult news they received over the break has not been a negative distraction for this team.

Instead, it has become a rallying cry. It has been a circling of the wagons to show the world that the words on the front of their warm-ups are not simply words for these Huskies.

No one on this team fights alone.

“Everybody comes together, especially for something like this,” Lehman said. “Everybody wants to support her. We’re there to let each other know we have each other’s backs on and off the court. That’s what makes the team special. I don’t know if you can see it, but we can feel it on the floor.”

Kitchen helps Rock Valley boost win streak W

DeKalb graduate Jace Kitchen has provided solid contributions and has the Rock Valley men’s basketball team on a seven-game winning streak.

Kitchen turned in another impressive performance for the Golden Eagles with 15 points and three rebounds in a 113-83 home win Saturday against Harper. He has moved into the Rock Valley starting lineup the past two games and has averaged 14.4 points a game this season.

Ty Carlson had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Aurora in a 77-71 loss Saturday at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The sophomore forward from Kaneland has started all 11 games for Aurora and is second on the team in scoring at 15.7 points a game. He leads Aurora with 6.5 rebounds a game.

eraged 8.9 points a game. The freshman from DeKalb also has averaged 6.7 rebounds a game.

The Carthage women’s basketball team started 2017 with a 65-50 win Wednesday against North Park. Bailey Gilbert connected on 3 of 6 from 3-point range for nine points and three assists in 31 minutes.

In a 59-56 loss Saturday at Elmhurst, every shot the sophomore guard from Sycamore took was from behind the 3-point line, as she went 3 for 7 for nine points. Gilbert has averaged 9.5 points a game in about 28 minutes of action for Carthage.

North Central held on for an 8887 win Saturday against North Park.

Kaneland grad Caroline Heimerdinger had 12 points and three rebounds in 15 minutes. It was the second start of the season for the junior guard from Kaneland, who is majoring in psychology and has averaged 5.8 points a game and 11.7 minutes a game this season.

MVP matchup never materializes Butler leaves early because of illness

After Monday night’s 109-94 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, veteran Dwyane Wade won’t let them hide from it.

“Like I’ve said, we are what our record says we are,” Wade said. “I know everyone would want to believe that they’re somebody that they ain’t.

We’re [.500] for a reason. We go out and play those games. So we are what our record says we are.

“Who knows what we’re going to end up at the end of the season. If we’re going to be a .500 team, if we’re going to be below it or above. But right now we are what we are.”

What they are after the Thunder blowout is 19-19, as their three-game winning streak came to a screeching halt.

More disappointing than the loss, however, was the fact that the highly anticipated showdown between MVP candidates Russell Westbrook and Jimmy Butler never really had a chance to

materialize.

Butler was fighting illness all day, missing the shootaround and was a question mark to even play. He gave it a go, but was nowhere near Butler level, as coach Fred Hoiberg finally pulled him from the game in the third quarter and they made the decision to send him home from the United Center.

Until that point, Butler was 0 for 6 from the field with only one point. He did manage seven assists, playing facilitator for his teammates, but considering he came into the showdown with Westbrook averaging 38 points a game over his Jimmy Butler past three contests, well, the illness obviously won.

“Appreciate him coming out and giving it a shot,” Hoiberg said. “It says a lot about him as a competitor, but he was really struggling, obviously. They sent him home after we took him out in the third quarter, and he will not travel with us [Tuesday to Washington].

As for Westbrook, he didn’t disappoint. He seldom has this season. The guard finished with 21 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds, lifting the Thunder

to a 23-16 record, as well as staying in pursuit of averaging a triple-double for the season.

Hoiberg was asked if there was a player he could compare Westbrook to, and said he’s one of a kind.

“In a long time at least,” Hoiberg said. “In this day and age, to average a triple-double, that says all you need to know about Westbrook. He gets it done in so many ways.

“You have to try to execute the game plan and get him to shoot the shots you want and try to slow him down.”

Michael Carter-Williams tried, and actually held him to four points in the first quarter, but Oklahoma City blew the game open in the second, outscoring the Bulls, 35-26, as Westbrook scored nine points and handed out three assists in his seven-plus minutes of work in that second quarter.

Wade did his best to try to carry the Bulls’ offense with Butler down, as the veteran went 7 for 16 from the field for 22 points. He just didn’t have enough help.

That will need to change Tuesday, as the Bulls will be without Butler and Wade (scheduled rest) against the Wizards.

“We need other guys to step up,” Wade said. “Now it’s about seeing how ready we can get in this quick turnaround.”

In almost 17 minutes a game, Sycamore graduate Julia Moll has scored 2.1 points a game for Beloit College.

The junior guard has averaged 1.2 rebounds a game and has collected 14 steals as she’s played in all 14 games for the Buccaneers.

The Waubonsee women’s basketball team lost, 86-60, to Illinois Valley on Thursday. Freshman forward Lauren Goff had 18 points for the Chiefs.

A Sycamore graduate, Goff is second on Waubonsee with 11.9 points a game and leads the Chiefs with 5.2 assists a game.

Buffalo 125-pounder Kyle Akins improved to 5-2 on the season with a 6-0 home win Saturday against Columbia’s Johnson Mai. The redshirt sophomore from Sycamore added a forfeit win Sunday against Sacred Heart.

The Bulls have won five straight dual meets. Akins, who is majoring in occupational therapy, is 1-0 in Mid American Conference dual meets.

Hartman fitting mold – a grinder who can score

mpotash@suntimes.com There was nothing greasy about the game-tying goal gritty, gutty Ryan Hartman scored against the Sabres on Thursday night.

The Blackhawks rookie forward made a nifty move along the boards to split two defenders, then fired a wrist shot from the left circle to beat Sabres goalie Andres Nilsson for a highlight-reel play, even adding a touch of Bobby Orr at the end – flying through the air on his follow through.

“I’ve made plays like that in my junior career and even down in Rockford,” Hartman said. “Being up here, there seem to be more grittier goals, shots on net. [But] there’s definitely flashes of it. It’s nice to be rewarded on one like that. Sometimes you make a move and get to the net and you don’t end up finishing it off, and it’s kind of for nothing.

“But that’s not necessarily my game. I’m more [about] getting the puck, being in front of the net, taking the puck to the net.”

It didn’t take long for Hartman to prove his point. In a 2-2 game against the Predators on Sunday night, he scored the greasiest of goals when Richard Panik’s shot in front of the net popped into the air and deflected off Hartman’s hip. Hartman added two empty-net goals for his first career

hat trick in a 5-2 victory that gave the Hawks their third consecutive win after a stretch of five losses in six games (1-4-1).

“I think goals like [Sunday night] are a little more like me,” Hartman said. “I don’t know about the other night [against the Sabres]. It’s nice to get a couple of those where you don’t really use your stick and they kind of go off you.”

One of the hallmarks of the Hawks success under Joel Quenneville is having scorers who can grind and grinders who can score. That Hartman can do both – grind and finish – has helped propel him to the top of the Hawks’ 2016-17 rookie class. Hartman has 10 goals and seven assists with a pluseight rating in 38 games. He’s tied for fourth among NHL rookies in goals and plus-minus.

“He’s playing such a complete game,” Hawks captain Jonathan Toews said. “He’s playing that hard-nosed, gritty hockey where he’s working hard.

He’s getting pucks back. He’s making things easier on his linemates.”

And he can finish.

“He’s getting his skill involved and showing it off,” Toews said. “That goal [against the Sabres] – you don’t see too many like that. He got himself through a defenseman and was able to use his shot. I think we all know he can put the puck in when he gets the chance, so it’s nice to see him playing the way he is.”

Osteoporosis risk increases after menopause

Since in its early stages osteoporosis typically does not have symptoms, a bone density test is needed for an accurate diagnosis. This is a painless scan in which low-level X-rays are used to reveal the proportion of minerals in your bones. During the test you lie on a padded table as the technician scans several areas, usually your hip, spinal column and wrist.

Treatment for osteoporosis ranges from lifestyle changes, such as adding an exercise plan and switching to a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, to a range of medications that you would discuss with your doctor.

No matter your age, there are things you can do to keep your bones strong. Calcium is one of the building blocks of new bone, and to successfully absorb that calcium, your body needs vitamin D. Dairy foods, certain nuts and green leafy vegetables contain lots of calcium. Eggs, fatty fish and fortified milk contain vitamin D. Talk to your doctor about whether you need supplements of calcium and/or vitamin D. Staying physically active strengthens both muscle and bone. Try weight-bearing exercises three to four times a week, and don’t forget about balance and agility exercises, which can help prevent a fall.

Your bones hold you up, allow you to move and contain the marrow that produces about 230 billion red blood cells a day – don’t take your bones for granted.

Dear Doctors: I just turned 65, and even though I’m strong and healthy, my friends say I should be concerned about osteoporosis. What is it, and how do I know if I have it?

Dear Reader: Osteoporosis, which literally means “porous bones,” is a progressive disease in which bone mass is lost. As a result, bones become thinner, more fragile and are at higher risk of fracture. People with osteoporosis most often break a bone in the hip, forearm or spine.

Although osteoporosis can occur in men and women of any age, post-menopausal women have the highest risk. This is due to the steep drop in the production of estrogen, a hormone produced by the ovaries, which protects against bone loss.

Risk of osteoporosis increases along with a person’s age. A family history of the disease is an indicator of risk, as are alcoholism, cigarette smoking, anorexia and steroid therapy. Race also plays a role, with Caucasian and Asian women more likely to develop osteoporosis than other ethnicities.

To understand osteoporosis, let’s first talk about bones: Your skeleton, which supports and protects your body, is made up of living tissue.

It’s also a storehouse of essential minerals that are held within your bones. Throughout your life, your bones go through a metabolic process called remodeling, in which old bone tissue is removed from the skeleton and new bone tissue is formed.

As we age, the formation of new bone tissue slows. In people with osteoporosis, the formation of new bone can’t keep pace with the removal of old bone, which results in a net decrease in bone density. In addition to an increased risk of fracture, people with osteoporosis experience a loss of height, stooped posture and decreased mobility.

So how can you know if you have osteoporosis?

We have seen that we can take a diamond finesse at trick two, draw trumps ending in hand, lead a second diamond and claim when the king appears. We lose only one heart. That is a reasonable line of play, but if the diamond finesse loses, a club return from East would strand us in the dummy.

Better is to take the heart finesse at trick two. If it wins, ruff the club three, take the spade ace-queen and heart ace, ruff a heart, draw the last trump and try diamonds for an overtrick. Here, the heart finesse loses and, say, a club is returned. South ruffs in the dummy, cashes the top trumps, plays a heart to the useful 10, draws the missing trump and takes the diamond finesse.

Wiseman felt sure that East had the heart king, so she ruffed the club three at trick two, cashed the spade ace-queen and led a low heart from the board. East had no answer.

EVENTS Challenge Zone Parade of Athletes 50/50 Raffle Cheer Challenge

First National Bank challenges all businesses and individuals to show their community and school spirit by supporting the DeKalb and Sycamore Sports Booster Clubs. An estimated $60,000 will be raised through the “Challenge” during the 2016-2017 school year. Come on out to the games, wear your school colors, and show your Spirit!
