POLL Another year of ‘Oh, come on!’ YESTERDAY’S

moments in the making

I get a kick out of my 12-year-old granddaughter when something doesn’t go right for her.

She gets all dramatic and exclaims in a diva-like voice, “Oh, come on!” with a prolonged, high-pitched modulation of the word, “come.” Plus, as she cries out, she shrugs her shoulders upward and reaches her arms out as if appealing to some invisible force that has caused her this exasperation.

Now, it’s kinda cute, and since she has figured out her phrase’s entertainment value, she often looks for an opportunity to say it.

Either that or she has become the most recurrently irritated little person on the planet.

Unfortunately, her declaration is infectious and I have found myself using it frequently, not for laughs and attention mind you, but because I think I have become a crotchety old man and enjoy sucking other people into my mini-episodes of misery.

Yep, my “Oh, come on!” moments are real and, if I know anything about my readers, I bet many of you can relate to them as well.

See how many of these you can check off on my list of … Top “Oh, Come On!” Moments in Daily Life of 2016 • You go to make a sandwich and get the bread. There sitting at the bottom of the bag are only the two crusts. You take them out and they have the texture of two yeast-risen hockey pucks. Oh, come on!

• You get in the car and go to put on your seat belt. As you tug it, it refuses to move. You look at the thing-a-ma-jig that guides the seat belt and you see that it has, against all Newtonian physical laws, folded itself in half and sits there like a bolt in a vise. Oh, come on!

• It’s time to sit on the throne. Everything is fine until you pull the toilet paper. Oh, it

JUST HUMOR ME Michael Penkava rolls fine, it’s just that it rips near the edge, forming an inch-long strip that grows thicker and thicker as you pull. You continue pulling, hoping that it self-corrects. It doesn’t, and you are left with 3 feet of shredded toilet paper in your lap. Oh, come on!

• You’ve got your favorite pudding cup in your hand, the one with the tab so tiny you almost need tweezers to grab it. Finally you get a hold of it, only when you pull it, it only tears a small opening down the middle. Now you try to remove the rest of the cover from the sides, but your fingers get pudding all over them, the cup slides out of your hand, falls onto the floor and you have to settle for a leaky juice box.

Oh, come on!

• You are stopped at a red light. It turns green, but the person in front of you just sits there. You don’t want to be a jerk and beep right away, so you wait. And wait. Finally, when you’re just about ready to hit the horn, they take off. They then casually breeze through the yellow at the next light and you get stuck dead at the red. Oh, come on!

• You send in a column, but the copy editor cuts out your hilarious best line at the end of it. What you wanted the readers to read was

Wee Naturalist program gives kids a taste of nature

news@daily-chronicle.com Edmund Solares-Jaeger sees a lot of animals in his backyard, so he couldn’t wait to learn more about animal tracks.

“I watch a lot of shows about animals, which got me inspired to learn more,” Edmund, 7, said. “My mom told me about this, and I wanted to try it out. It’s great. I like to look for animal prints outside and play in nature. But I don’t harm nature.”

The second-grader at Littlejohn Elementary School in DeKalb was one of several children who attended the Wee Naturalist program Saturday at Russell Woods Forest Preserve in Genoa.

The University of Illinois Extension sponsors the program on the first Saturday of every month, each with a different theme. This weekend, the children learned all about animal tracks through stories, a hands-on activity and nature hike.

Sarah Tobias, master naturalist, led the program. She said the idea is to inspire a love of nature and help the children understand nature so they develop a desire to learn more.

“It’s important to go outside and spot things and to look for signs of animals,” she said. “We’re intertwined with nature. If we don’t understand the world around us, nature will die off. Research has shown that when we lose one thing, it affects everything else. We need kids to understand at a young age, so they grow up with an appreciation of it.”

Edmund’s mother, Frances Jaeger, said her son loves to be outside, and she wanted to bring him so he could go on a hike during the winter.

“This is our first class. He loves animals, so I thought learning about tracking would be useful for him to know,” she said.

Emily Larson of DeKalb agrees that children should spend time outside learning about what’s in nature.

She brought her two sons, ages 3 and 5.

“It’s important for them to learn about it so they can take care of the earth. It’s an important skill for everyone to have,” she said. “If you start young, they’ll appreciate it more.”

“I like learning about nature because it’s fun,” she said. “My favorite part is the hike. Each time we do a hike, there’s a special game. I like to look at animal tracks because they’re awesome.”

Peggy Doty, a University of Illinois Extension educator, said the Wee Naturalist program, which is geared for children ages 5 to 7, just started back up in October. She used to teach it several years ago and was able to bring it back with Tobias’ help.

“Our kids need to be in nature, where it’s real. Screens are important for their future, and they need to learn about technology, but we

have to balance that,” Doty said. “We want to show them that they can be engaged in both.”

Elizabeth Moeller’s daughter, Chloe, has been “cooped up” this winter, so she thought her daughter would enjoy going on a nature hike.

“It’s good for kids’ health to get outside, but this also helps them be good stewards of the Earth,” the DeKalb resident said.

Chloe, 7, explained that she’s excited to share what she learned about animal tracks with her father and sisters.

“I really want to learn about tigers and other mammals. I was very excited to come today,” the first-grader at Brooks Elementary School said.

Alicia Tobin used to take classes

at the nature center years ago and said she wanted to bring her son, Nolan, to get involved with programs that are held there.

“One of our New Year’s resolutions is to get outside more, so this is perfect,” the DeKalb resident said. “He was so excited that we got out some books about animals last night.”

The theme for February’s program is Hibernation and Groundhog’s Day. In March, the children will learn about food in nature.

Frogs are the theme for April, and in May, the class will cover flowers and pollination. For information and to register for the Wee Naturalist classes, call 815-784-2000. The cost is $3 a child per class, and accompanying adults are free.

Sycamore’s Boynton House to be repaired

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Repairs are planned for a historic Sycamore mansion damaged by a recent fire.

Dave Waters, the owner of the historic Charles O. Boynton House that caught fire three weeks ago, said his tentative plans are to repair the damage and move back into the 130-year-old mansion.

The building was left uninhabitable after significant damage to its east side as well as smoke and water damage throughout its interior, and the house’s insurer, Kane County Mutual in Geneva, initially estimated it would take a minimum of nine months for repairs.

In the interim, Waters’ insurance was able to move him into another home 2 miles north of the Boynton House and provide rental furniture.

Insurance is still working to come up with an estimate of damages, Waters said. A news release from the Sycamore Fire Department had assessed the damages at $175,000.

“It’s a unique house with a lot of unique features, so it’s not an easy estimate because of that type of workmanship,” Waters said.

The fire started after a van parked in the house’s carport belonging to Norm Mathisen, owner of Norm’s Custom Hardwood Flooring, caught fire and spread. Mathisen had reported the fire while doing carpentry work on the building.

Both Kane County Mutual and the van’s insurer, State Farm, are conducting investigations. Waters said he felt confident that insurance would be able to cover all of the costs.

One of the biggest problems is damage from the smoke, which permeated the whole house, so it was unclear if the home could be habitable during the construction, he said.

Waters said that he had recently spoken with Mathisen, who told him that the van must have caught fire not long after he pulled into the carport as he had smelled smoke only a few minutes after he had started work on the house.

The fire was put out in about three hours. Waters lauded the efforts of the Sycamore Fire Department for covering all of the pictures inside the house so they wouldn’t be ruined and preventing additional damage.

BRIEFS Police: Fleeing suspect caught; gun found after he’s handcuffed

DeKALB - An Aurora man faces felony gun charges after being found with a handgun Sunday morning after running from police during a traffic stop.

Marcus J. McGill, 31, 917 Pearl St., Aurora, could face charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, armed violence, resisting police and other crimes after the incident, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

A sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle at 12:39 a.m. Sunday on North Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb for an expired registration. The deputy smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle and asked the passenger for identification. The man ran from the car east into University Village at 722 N. Annie Glidden Road, according to the news release.

The deputy chased the man for about 200 yards. The deputy then used a stun gun, hitting the suspect in the back, because he said the suspect was reaching into his waistband.

When the suspect, later identified as McGill, was handcuffed, police found a .45-caliber handgun.

McGill is being held at the DeKalb County Jail without bond.

Information sought on theft of farm equipment

DeKALB – Police are seeking information regarding the theft of a piece of farm equipment in rural DeKalb.

At some point between July and December, a field drag was taken from a machine shed at a property in the 5600 block of Route 38.

The drag was described as a late ’90s vintage drag.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272 or crimestoppers@dekalbcounty.org. All callers can remain anonymous.

Born: October 1, 1924; in Sanborn, IA Died: January 5, 2017; in DeKalb, IL James Louis Arends, 92, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Thursday, January 5, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family. His grandson, Tim Munz; and wife, Dana, had been caring for him so he could stay in his home as was his wish.

He was born October 1, 1924 in Sanborn, Iowa, the son of Louis and Neenah (Culver) Arends. Jim was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was discharged in December 1945. He knew what it meant to put in a hard day’s work and was a hard working man. Jim retired as a union millwright. He also spent many years working in the oil fields in Southern Illinois, North Dakota and Colorado, moving his family from one oil field to the next. He enjoyed his many friends from his car driving days for local area dealerships. Jim was a member of the Elks Club for more than 50 years.

By Diane Krieger Spivak We tend to take our hearing for granted. But few of us ever think about how hearing actually works.

Our hearing system includes four parts, the outer ear, middle ear, inner ear and the central auditory pathways. When sound travels through the air a sound wave goes out from the source in all directions, according to Ear Science, which notes that each sound wave is unique. Some are high-pitched, some low pitched, others loud or soft.

The ears capture these sound waves, converting them into messages our brains can understand.

The process of hearing begins at the tympanic membrane - the eardrum - which begins to vibrate from the sound. Attached to the eardrum are three tiny bones. The malleus (hammer) transmits the vibration to the incus

(anvil), which passes the vibration on to the stapes (stirrup). The stapes pushes on the oval window, which separates the air-filled middle ear from the fluid-filled inner ear to produce pressure waves in the cochlea, located in the inner ear, according to the Society for Neuroscience.

The cochlea, which is shaped like a snail, is filled with liquid. Different sounds, whether high or low, cause a different area of the cochlea to vibrate.The liquid carries the vibrations to thousands of tiny hair cells, called cilia, adds the Society. The cilia carry a message to the nerve that is connected to the brain. The brain’s auditory cortex, the part of the brain involved in perceiving sound. analyzes the information, which we then perceive as sound.

Sound is processed on both sides of the brain, but for most people, the left side of the brain perceives and produces speech. Damage to the left auditory cortex, such as from a stroke, says the Society, can leave a person able to hear but unable to understand language.

SPRINGFIELD – A plan to end a twoyear Illinois budget standoff negotiated in the Senate – which likely includes an income tax increase as well as items on Gov. Bruce Rauner’s agenda – could get a vote in Springfield as early as Monday, a leading Republican senator said Sunday.

The deal was still shaping up over the weekend after weeks of talks between Democratic Senate President John Cullerton and GOP Leader Christine Radogno, said Sen. Pamela Althoff, a Republican from McHenry.

While it would mark a significant step toward smashing the logjam on a state spending plan between Republican Rauner and Democratic legislative leaders, there are only two work days remaining for the current General Assembly – no time to seek a House vote.

But it could position the Senate as distinct in what has largely been a test of wills between the billionaire governor and Chicago Democrat Michael Madigan, house speaker for three decades. Rauner often invokes Madigan’s

Durbin hesitant on some Trump Cabinet nominees

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin is expressing concern about several of President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet picks, noting that overall it is a “very rich” group.

Durbin told the State Journal-Register in Springfield that he likely will support Elaine Chao, Trump’s nominee to be secretary of transportation, and has heard good things about retired Marine Gen. James Mattis, Trump’s pick for secretary of defense.

However, he is skeptical about former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Trump’s choice to lead the Department of Energy. Durbin said he doesn’t understand how Perry could administer a department he has said he wants to close.

Durbin said he is unsure about Senate colleague Jeff Sessions of Alabama, who is Trump’s choice for attorney general.

He said they agree on the need for criminal justice reform. But Durbin said

Two mobile stroke units poised to start operating

WINFIELD – Two suburban Chicago hospitals plan to launch mobile units this year that are designed to quickly get lifesaving treatment to stroke victims.

The Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital and Rush University Medical Center mobile stroke units will be the first of their kind in the Chicago area.

The ambulances will carry CT scanners, video-conferencing equipment and clot-dissolving medication that can restore blood flow.

“I think this will be the standard of care as time goes by. It’s a phenomenal technology to have,” Dr. Harish Shownkeen, medical director for stroke and neurovascular medicine at Central DuPage, told the Daily Herald. “The treatment hasn’t changed; it’s the initiating of the treatment that has made the quantum leap.”

Doctors said the mobile units are valuable because they allow treatment to begin sooner, making a huge difference in patients’ recoveries.

“Time really is of the essence,” said Dr. James Conners, section head of cerebro-

And it might include a plan to borrow billions of dollars to pay down overdue bills – which topped $11 billion on Friday – to vendors and service providers.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly did not comment Sunday. On Friday, the governor told reporters in

Carbondale he knew few of the details but said, “I’m optimistic that Democrats and Republicans will continue to negotiate in good faith to come up with changes to our system so it’s not broken anymore.”

The refusal to budge on either side has forced Illinois to limp along for two years without an approved spending plan. Government has functioned largely on the strength of court-ordered spending for social services and lawmakers’ piecemeal appropriation action.

But 1 million or more people relying on mental health, substance abuse treatment or domestic violence prevention funded with state dollars had been cut off.

Rauner’s budget office predicts a $5.3 billion deficit June 30, the end of the fiscal year, in addition to the mountain of past-due bills.

Man in custody after O’Hare airport checkpoint breach

CHICAGO – Chicago police said a man is in custody after breaching a security checkpoint at O’Hare International Airport.

Authorities said the man breached a checkpoint early Sunday in the airport’s Terminal 3, and tried to board an aircraft.

When police officers prevented him from doing so, the man attacked the officers, striking them several times.

Authorities said after being taken into custody the man was taken to Resurrection Medical Center for a mental health evaluation.

Child porn producer gets 80-year sentence

EDWARDSVILLE – An 80-year prison sentence has been handed a southern Illinois man who pleaded guilty to child pornography and predatory criminal sexual assault.

David J. Von Bergen of Godfrey was arrested in September 2014 when police served a search warrant on his home.

Police said Von Bergen was downloading child pornography on his computer at the time of his arrest.

Authorities said a search of the computer turned up two videos made by the 36-yearold Von Bergen depicting sexual acts between him and two sisters, ages 7 and 8.

Madison County Circuit Judge Neil Schroeder on Friday sentenced Von Bergen to 25 years on each of the two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault. Von Bergen received 15 years for each of the child pornography charges.

Von Bergen must serve 57 years before he is eligible for parole.

Agent who questioned Hussein leads Fla. case

FORTLAUDERDALE,Fla.– The FBI agent who interrogated Saddam Hussein alone for months after the former Iraqi leader’s capture is now leading the investigation into the Florida airport shooting rampage blamed on an Iraq war veteran.

George Piro, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Miami field office, was Saddam’s sole interrogator beginning in January 2004. In previous interviews, Piro has said Saddam did not know his true identity – the Iraqi leader called him “Mr. George” – and that he posed as a high-level envoy who answered directly to then-President George W. Bush.

Now the 49-year-old Piro, a native of Beirut, Lebanon, fluent in Arabic and Assyrian, is in charge of the FBI investigation into the shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport that left five people dead and six wounded. Federal prosecutors have charged Esteban Santiago, 26, with airport violence and firearms offenses that could bring the death penalty if he is convicted.

In announcing the charges filed Saturday, Piro said his thoughts are with the victims and their families.

“I want to ensure these families that law enforcement is working tirelessly in order to ensure justice is served,” he said.

Piro, an FBI agent since 1999, moved with his family from Lebanon to California’s San Joaquin Valley as a teenager. After high school he enlisted in the Air Force, then became a police officer for a decade in Ceres, California, followed by a job as an investigator in the local prosecutor’s office.

Once he joined the FBI in Phoenix, Piro was one of only a handful of Arabic-speaking agents – a group that suddenly

In later interviews, including a 2008 appearance on CBS’s “60 Minutes” program, Piro said he met daily with Saddam in a windowless room and worked to gain his trust by becoming his only provider of necessities and such things as paper for Saddam to write poetry.

Eventually, Piro said Saddam confirmed that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction before the U.S. invasion but might seek them in the future to deter Iran and other threats. Saddam also denied any links to al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden, Piro has said.

Saddam also liked to brag about how he escaped U.S. airstrikes and capture, Piro said.

“What he wanted to really illustrate is ... how he was able to outsmart us,” Piro told “60 Minutes.” “He got rid of his

normal vehicles. He got rid of the protective detail that he traveled with, really just to change his signature.”

Saddam was later tried and executed by hanging in December 2006.

Santiago, the airport shooting suspect, also served in Iraq in 2010 with the Puerto Rico National Guard as part of an engineering battalion, guard officials said. Santiago later served in the Army Reserves and Alaska National Guard.

After Iraq, Piro moved on to top FBI counterterrorism jobs in Washington, including a White House position involving high-value detainee interrogation that works with various intelligence agencies.

Since taking the top Miami FBI job, Piro has overseen work in more domestic areas such as health care fraud, identity theft and tax fraud, Ponzi schemes and mortgage fraud – all areas where South Florida is among the nation’s leaders. Bank robberies, violent street gangs, public corruption and smuggling of humans and drugs round out much of the work for the Miami office’s estimated 1,000 agents and employees.

“La La Land” steamrolled, “Moonlight” swooped in at the last minute and Meryl Streep offered a stirring rebuke to president-elect Donald Trump at a schizophrenic Golden Globes that pivoted between heartfelt moments of protest and a desire to sing and dance.

Damien Chazelle’s bright-hued Los Angeles musical “La La Land” dominated the Beverly Hills, California, ceremony with seven awards – a Golden Globes record – including best motion picture, comedy or musical, further cementing its Oscar favorite status.

But perhaps its stiffest Academy Awards competition, Barry Jenkins’ tender coming of age drama “Moonlight” – which competed largely in separate dramatic categories – took the night’s final award, best movie drama.

It was the film’s only hardware despite six nominations.

Yet the night belonged to Meryl Streep, this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree, who most articulated an argument for the inclusivity of the movies – an ongoing theme of the night – over the platform of the president-elect, who is to be sworn in Jan. 20.

In one of the evening’s more emotional acceptance speeches, Gosling dedicated his award to the late brother of his partner, Eva Mendes.

“While I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer,” said Gosling, referring to Juan Carlos Mendes.

It was the second fiasco in eight days for Globes producer Dick Clark Productions, which presented the infamous Mariah Carey flub on New Year’s Eve. As if predicting the “La La Land” haul to come, the “Tonight Show” host started the show with a cold open ode to the film in a lavish sketch more typical of the Academy Awards than the Globes.

Fallon did a version of the film’s opening on-top-of-cars dance scene, with starry cameos from Timberlake, Tina Fey, Amy Adams and the white Ford Bronco of “The People v. O.J. Simpson.”

Cleaning up VA should be a priority The body of a military veteran was left in a Veterans Affairs health care facility shower room for more than nine hours before someone finally had it moved to a morgue, the Tampa Bay Times in Florida reported last month.

Then, once their negligence came to light, some staff at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System hospice tried to cover it up, according to an in-house investigation.

Some staff at the hospice violated VA policies by “failing to provide appropriate post-mortem care” of the veteran’s body, the hospital Administrative Investigation Board concluded. A hospital spokesman called the episode “unacceptable,” but refused to tell the newspaper whether the guilty employees had been disciplined in any way.

Providing that information would have been a violation of confidentiality rules, the spokesman said.

That is absurd, of course. If confidentiality rules prohibit the government from disclosing whether employees have been disciplined – without providing any names – something is badly wrong within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

But we knew that.

What the spokesman did say was that members of the hospice staff have “recommitted” to VA core values.

Pardon us for doubting that. More likely, those involved breathed sighs of relief for being punished by mere slaps on the wrist.

If they recommitted to anything, it was to not getting caught the next time they do something wrong.

A bill that would allow VA officials to come down hard on the handful of personnel who make a mockery of efforts by others to help veterans is pending in Congress.

Why hasn’t it passed, yet? Because the bureaucracy wants it killed.

President-elect Donald Trump should make cleaning up the VA one of his top priorities – recommitting the nation to treating veterans decently.

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker My 8-year-old daughter has seen brown, kinky-haired girls chase their dog across the White House lawn. She has seen gorgeous darkskinned women grace the covers of fashion magazines. She has watched two young black women dominate Olympic gymnastics and had her picture taken with the costumed figure of Disney’s black princess, Tiana. For her, those examples of a profoundly changed nation represent normalcy.

I recite those examples because I need to remind myself of King’s optimism. As the nation approaches the 88th anniversary of his birth, we are traipsing – no, stampeding – backward, toward a time of legally sanctioned injustice, of explicit bigotry, of freely expressed racial resentments. A vicious backlash against racial progress fueled the rise of Donald Trump, who will take office as the nation’s 45th president this month.

Trump represents the antithesis

– a grotesque inversion – of all that King stood for. While King respected labor organizer Cesar Chavez as a fellow leader in the fight for full equality, Trump has denounced Mexican immigrants as criminals. While King drew crucial support from Jewish Americans, Trump has drawn anti-Semites into his inner circle.

While King’s last great crusade was an effort to improve the economic standing of poor and working-class Americans of all races, Trump – despite his campaign pledges – is seeding his administration with rich men and women who disdain the poor.

The president-elect ushers in a new post-Reconstruction period, a bitter retrenchment that figures to halt the progress the nation has made toward a more perfect union. It is no mere coincidence that Trump’s election victory has led to so many recorded examples of racist tirades from his supporters. They have succeeded, in their view, in taking “their” country back from the citizens of color who dared believe it was their country, too.

Yet, there is something about these disheartening developments that could make the annual celebration of King’s birth more substantial

than ceremonial, more authentic than ritualistic. Progressives don’t have the luxury of merely singing the old hymns or citing the old speeches. There are battles to fight to preserve hard-won gains.

Forgive me, then, as I remember one of King’s speeches that doesn’t get the attention that it deserves.

Accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, King’s prophetic voice rang through: “I accept this award today with an abiding faith in America and an audacious faith in the future of mankind. ... This faith can give us courage to face the uncertainties of the future. ... When our days become dreary with low-hovering clouds and our nights become darker than a thousand midnights, we will know that we are living in the creative turmoil of a genuine civilization struggling to be born.”

King was no naive dreamer. But he always believed in an America that was better than the one in which he lived.

Isn’t it amusing that right after seeing people gorging themselves with these gourmet delights, there is a commercial for a new miracle diet plan you can

join?

Am I the only one who sees the irony in this?

I joined a group diet plan one time and on the way home from the meeting, we stopped for a milkshake and other delights, despite the leader’s advice, “The diet starts TONIGHT. Not tomorrow.”

A parting cheery note: The second day of a new miracle diet is the easiest.

Because by that time, you are usually off of it.

So take heart and if you don’t succeed, Lent is coming up soon and you can begin anew.

Paraphrasing 19th-century cleric Theodore Parker, King preached that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

He believed in his country. A resolute patriot, he foresaw a nation that lived up to its creed, that kept its word to all of its citizens, that presented the world with a powerful example of justice and equality for all.

The civil rights movement that he led brought the United States a long way down that road toward a broad justice. When he was assassinated in 1968, it was still difficult to imagine a black man inhabiting the Oval Office, black men and women running Fortune 500 companies, black National Football League coaches, and powerful black women so influential that they are known only by their first names.

In the nearly half-century since his death, we have seen all those things. And more.

The homestead’s season typically ended by December and started again in May. But this year the Glidden Homestead and Historical Center will remain open through the winter for tours of the National Historical Site where Joseph Glidden and his family lived when he created his most famous invention,

barbed wire.

The 2017 theme is “Digging In” and will highlight the continued restoration of the interior of the 1870s brick barn, the results of the archaeological dig of the barn’s floor, the restoration of the homestead’s heritage gardens, and the 1917 entry of the American Expeditionary Force into the trenches of WWI. Résumé- building workshop set Teens to discuss ‘Celebration DAILY CHRONICLE The DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St., will hold a résumé-building workshop for adults and teenagers from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Bob Schlacks brings his many years of experience to this workshop to help attendees improve upon, or begin, their professional résumés. Schlacks worked for more than 20 years in the Human Resources Department for AT&T in the Naperville-Lisle area, and conducted workshops twice monthly for more than 15 years at the Illinois Worknet in North Aurora.

This interactive workshop will focus on the following areas: What should and shouldn’t be on your résumé, the five

categories of information your résumé must contain, how to make your résumé move to the top of the stack, breaking down your work experience using action verbs, and presenting examples of actual résumés.

The workshop will be highlighted by a PowerPoint and, in addition, Schlacks will conduct an “Ask the Expert” program after the presentation. Participants can schedule a 20-minute session to review their résumé or discuss any employment-related question or concern.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Sycamore’s Artimus Cunningham had only one bout this past week coming off a five-week layoff from an injury.

Despite the layoff, he was one win away from winning the 170-pound weight class Saturday at the Sycamore Invitational, losing to the No. 1-ranked wrestler in Class 2A in the title match.

Cunningham and teammate Joey Beaudoin were the two Spartans to reach the championship round. Kaneland’s Riley Vanik also wrestled for a title, but like his Sycamore rivals, lost in the title match to take second.

Kaneland and Sycamore finished tied for 16th place with 256 points. Washington won the event with 571 points.

Also earning medals for the Spartans were Trevor Boryla (sixth at 106 pounds) and Matthew Hunter (eighth at 182). For the Knights, Austin Kedzie (third at 120), Hayden Patterson (fourth at 170) and Colin Gussman (third at 220) also medaled.

Cunningham gave up five points in each of the first two periods to Pontiac’s Jake Lanning and was pinned with a minute left.

“I was really looking forward to wrestling the Pontiac kid, Jake Lanning,” Cunningham said. “I’ve heard about how great he is, and he’s ranked No. 1 for a reason. So I came in here with really two objectives in mind: Beat Hayden (Patterson) from Kaneland and get to [Lanning].”

Cunningham reached the final with a 5-3 semifinal win over Patterson.

Alex Nelson – filling in for coach Brian Davis – said he was glad to see Cunningham do so well in his first tournament since being injured – he did wrestle in Sycamore’s dual Thursday against Rochelle.

“I thought he had a great display today, taking second,” Nelson said.

“That’s huge for him to get back in the mode and get back on the mat again.

Obviously, we have February rolling around here soon, and we want to be back to where we were at the beginning of the year.”

Beaudoin said he was focused on trying to repeat as much as trying to pick up a quality win.

“Coming off last year and making it (to the final) again this year, I just went in there with confidence and knew I had to just worry about that match,” Beaudoin said. “I wasn’t thinking, ‘Oh, I won this last year, I’ll win it again this year.’ I just went out there and wrestled my match.”

Nelson said Punke and Washington will be in Sycamore’s sectional.

“Punke is tough,” Nelson said. “I think he’s top five in 2A. And we’re going to see him in sectionals. So it was a good gauge to see where he’s at, as well. Going in, we knew it was going to be a battle. [Beaudoin] had some good fight in there, but I’d like to see him on the attack more and get to the legs. But

Vanik lost 3-0 to the second-ranked wrestler in Class 3A, Willowbrook’s Jack Jensen. Vanik was third in Class 2A heading into the tourney.

“It’s good to wrestle someone a little different, someone you’re not going to see at state,” Vanik said. “I know the kid, and I’ve been wrestling with him since seventh grade. It was kind of like a practice – go out there, do something new and try to win.”

sports@daily-chronicle.com The Sycamore girls bowling team won the 19th annual Matt Clark Invitational on Saturday, winning its home tournament for the first time in 14 years.

Megan Kolberg was the individual champion with a 1,309 day, including a 722 series in the afternoon that includ-

ed a 258 and a 245.

Kolberg was in seventh place after the morning games.

“Her performance in the afternoon was a joke,” Sycamore coach Andy Hampton said. “I think she threw three bad balls all afternoon. Coach (Brian) Kolberg was keeping her channeled and locked in. I have to occasionally remind myself that she is only a freshman.”

The Spartans (5,707) finished ahead of Oswego East (5,583) and state-ranked Morris (5,582).

“I will tell you it was a team effort, and it was.” Hampton said. “Very few team championships are won based on an individual performance. But you cannot, in clear conscience, look past Megan’s performance.”

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois men’s basketball team could finally relax once sophomore Levi Bradley made his first free throw.

After the Huskies’ 17-point lead dwindled to three in the final seconds, Bradley’s free throw was just enough to put the game out of reach in NIU’s 87-83 win over Central Michigan on Saturday night at the NIU Convocation Center.

“For 35 minutes of the game, we probably couldn’t play much better,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said.

“We were moving the ball, we were scoring inside, we were scoring in transition, our defense was pretty solid. You know, you just have to finish the game.”

The Huskies (9-6, 1-1 MAC West) held a double-digit lead for a large portion of the game, including a 54-37 advantage midway through the second half after a pair of free throws by freshman guard Eugene German.

They also led 80-70 after a free throw by sophomore guard Laytwan Porter with 1:42 remaining, before the Chippewas (10-5, 0-2) went on a 13-6 run – capped by a 3-pointer by Braylon Rayson to make it 86-83 with five seconds left.

Rayson’s 3-pointer came after the Chippewas grabbed three offensive rebounds on the possession.

“Man, it was nerve-wracking, I think we got rattled for a second,” said NIU senior guard Dontel Highsmith, who had 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting. “I like how we bounced back and stayed poise at the end of the day and came out with the win.”

Struggling to get the ball inbounds after Rayson’s 3-pointer – the Huskies’ pass was deflected out of bounds two

separate times – Bradley got the ball and was fouled with 0.9 left and sank the first of his two free throws to seal the win.

“Against (Central Michigan’s) press, our guards weren’t getting open,” Montgomery said. “The guy that was taking the ball out of bounds has to have a little more poise. ... You have to sprint to get the ball and you just can’t relax. Our guys have a tendency to think that when you have a lead the game is over. The other team is going to keep playing.”

NIU sophomore center Jaylen Key recorded a double-double for the Huskies, finishing with 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting and had 11 rebounds. He was one of four players in double figures for the Huskies, along with Highsmith, senior center Marin Maric (17 points, nine rebounds) and Porter (16 points, five rebounds, four assists.)

Porter, who is working his way back after a three-game suspension earlier this season, played 23 minutes – his most since playing 23 Nov. 30 at Indiana State.

Rayson scored a game-high 29 points on 6-for-18 shooting (13 for 17 from the free-throw line) and David DiLeo hit five 3-pointers and finished with 22 points for the Chippewas.

Central Michigan guard Marcus Keene, who came into the game averaging 30.1 points a game, was held to 14 points on 4-for-11 shooting and committed six turnovers in 34 minutes.

“Keene, we were just picking him up at the NBA arc,” Montgomery said. “We tried to blitz a couple of ball screens. ... He didn’t have it going and he was sharing the ball. DeKALB – The players for the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team don’t remember the last time the Huskies started conference winning their first three games.

It’s because they weren’t born yet.

The Huskies put together one of its most impressive victories under second-year coach Lisa Carlsen in an 88-80 win over Ohio on Saturday afternoon at the NIU Convocation Center to give the Huskies their first 3-0 start to conference in more than two decades.

“It’s a big (win), but it’s early,” Carlsen said. “It’s one of those things, a lot of people probably thought NIU wasn’t supposed to get this one. I feel like it’s the one you got that maybe you didn’t count on, so that’s a big win.

Ohio is going to go beat a lot of teams and at the end of the year, they’ll probably be where they want to be. For us to defend home court against a team like that, it’s big.”

The last time the Huskies (10-4, 3-0 MAC West) started conference play with three wins came in the 1993-94 season as a member of the Mid-Continent Conference. They have never been 3-0 playing in the MAC. “I don’t think there’s any doubt about that – this thing is going in the right direction,” Carlsen said. “For us, that’s what’s most important. We’ve enjoyed a lot of firsts, especially this year. ... The only thing that matters to

Ohio (11-3, 2-1 MAC East) came into the season as a contender to win its third straight regular-season conference championship and won its opening two MAC games by an average of 19.5 points. The Bobcats hadn’t allowed more than 70 points in a game this season, but the Huskies nearly matched that in three quarters – tak-

ing a 69-58 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Huskies led for the majority of the game and built their advantage to as many as 17 after a layup by center Kelly Smith made it 75-58 with 7:17 remaining in the game.

“We talked about it before the year that great teams defend home court,” Carlsen said. “We look at what we were able to do tonight against a really good Ohio team, and I think that’s key for us going forward if we want to be where this group believes we can be.”

Feuerbach, Majerus combine for 50 points

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore girls basketball team used momentum from the third quarter to beat LaSalle-Peru, 54-38, on Saturday night in Sycamore.

The Spartans (11-5, 3-2 Northern Illinois Big 12) had been shooting well throughout the first half. But with their dominant performance on offense and stingy defense in the third quarter, they cracked the game wide open to all but put away LaSalle-Peru (9-10, 2-3 NIB 12).

In the third quarter, the Spartans outscored the Cavaliers, 22-7, after holding a 6-point advantage at halftime. Sycamore’s Kate Majerus and Kylie Feuerbach led the way, account-

ing for all but four of the Spartans’ points.

Majerus scored 11 in the third quarter to Feuerbach’s 10, while Feuerbach had a game-high 27 points and Majerus scored 23.

“If we shoot like that, we’re going to be pretty hard to beat,” Sycamore coach Adam Wickness said. “We challenged them at halftime and told them it really should be about a 15-point game instead of 6. Kylie and Kate make us go on offense. Taryn Mathey is kind of our defensive leader, but we saw Kylie and Kate really play well off of each other over the summer. When one of them drives and gets the defense to collapse, they kick it to the other for the open shot. Usually, when they catch it in rhythm, they have a really

good chance of making the shot.”

While Feuerbach and Majerus shot the ball well from the start of the game, Sycamore’s defense in the third quarter is what really created more of a lopsided score.

The Cavaliers were held scoreless for the first five minutes of the quarter and weren’t able to recover. The Cavaliers were led by Riley Brovelli and Maddie Freeman, who scored 8 points apiece.

“Any time we hold them scoreless for most of the quarter and shoot the way we did, we’re going to stretch the score a little,” Wickness said. “That’s part of what we talked about at halftime, and I’m happy the girls stepped up and executed the way we planned it.”

DeKALB – The DeKalb girls basketball team scored 14 points in the first quarter to take a commanding lead, but the Barbs would barely better their first-quarter totals throughout the rest of the game and fell to Ottawa, 34-29, on Saturday.

After Charlese Williams’ 6 first-quarter points paced them to a 14-5 lead, the Barbs did not score again until the third quarter. The Pirates (14-4, 4-0 Northern Illinois Big 12) managed only two points in the second quarter, which left the Barbs (4-14, 1-4) with a 14-7 advantage at halftime.

“We had a rough first and second quarter,” Ottawa coach Brent Moore said. “We wanted to make sure that we upped our ante in the second half.”

And up the ante they did. The Pirates started the second half with a 12-3 run scoring run, that was marred only by a Williams 3-pointer. Ottawa outscored the Barbs, 145, in the third quarter, and 13-10 in the fourth to come away with the victory.

The Pirates were led by Sloan Gayan’s 8 second-half points.

Gayan, along with Sedona Parks’ eight points, led the Pirates in scoring.

The Barbs leading scorer was Williams with 11 points, and Jacki Rapp added 8 points.

DeKalb coach Elliot Whitefield said his team has much to improve on.

“It’s a disappointing loss to a team I thought we could beat,” Whitefield said. “We beat ourselves. That’s where we’re at right now. Very inconsistent. We became spectators, hitchhikers, looking for a free ride. Nobody wanted to be aggressive. Instead, we started settling for 3s, which is what they wanted us to do.”

The Barbs will take on second-seeded Rockford Boylan in Saturday’s MLK tournament at DeKalb High School.

PITTSBURGH – Le’Veon Bell spent the past two Januarys watching helplessly while the Pittsburgh Steelers tried to make a deep postseason run without him. The ever fluid running back made up for lost time Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

So did Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown, the other members of Pittsburgh’s “Big Three” together in the playoffs for the first time.

Pounding away relentless at a defense that hardly seemed interested in

stopping him at frigid Heinz Field, Bell ran for a franchise postseason record 167 yards and two scores . The Steelers overwhelmed the beaten-up and mistake-prone Miami Dolphins.

“We wanted to go out there and make a statement,” Bell said.

Bell, Brown and Roethlisberger, who wore a walking boot on his right foot afterward, more than wiped away the bitter aftertaste of a 30-15 whipping at the hands of the Dolphins in mid-October. Given a shot at redemption, Pittsburgh didn’t let it go to waste. The Steelers (12-5) led by two touchdowns before the game was 10 minutes old on long touchdown passes from Roethlisberger to Brown. Miami never got closer than 11.

“Le’Veon was beastly,” said Brown, who finished with five receptions for 124 yards and the two scores. “All day, controlling the line of scrimmage, just running guys over and finding a way to put the ball in the end zone. Any time he’s playing like that, we’re going to be a hard team to beat.”

At least, against teams such as the Dolphins (10-7). Given a chance to prove their first playoff berth in eight years wasn’t a fluke despite being outgained and outscored during the regular season, Miami never found a rhythm.

CHICAGO – Ryan Hartman’s first career hat trick was a memorable one, all right. Hard to top three goals in eight-plus minutes without making a move on a goalie.

Hartman scored off a goalmouth scramble in the third period and tacked on two empty-netters, helping the Blackhawks beat the banged-up Nashville Predators, 5-2, on Sunday night.

“It’s not really how you draw it up when you think about getting a hat trick, but they don’t ask how, so I’ll take it,” he said.

Ryan Artemi Panarin Hartman and Niklas Hjalmarsson also scored for the Hawks, who have won the first three of a four-game homestand. Patrick Kane added three assists, running his team-best total to 32 in 43 games, and Corey Crawford made 25 saves.

Hartman was credited with his eighth of the season at 11:49 when Richard Panik’s shot created a scrum in front of the net, and the referees ruled the puck was deflected in legally and crossed the line before the goal was dislodged. Hartman said it went off his left hip while he battled Nashville defenseman Yannick Weber for position.

The tiebreaking goal stood after a video review.

“For me it had to do with whether or not he took his hand off the stick and batted it into the net,” Predators coach Peter Laviolette said. “It was difficult to tell, but certainly there was that motion that he did it. But I guess you can’t tell in the end whether or not he actually he did it.”

The Predators pulled Pekka Rinne for an extra attacker with 1:39 left, and Hartman added two more to run his total to 10 goals on the season, good for fifth on the team.

“He’s been a big player for us this year,” Kane said. “He’s been very productive for us this year.”

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Aaron Rodgers, master of the Hail Mary pass, struck again in another big moment.

Rodgers overcame a sluggish start and finished with four touchdown passes, including a momentum-swinging 42-yard heave to Randall Cobb at the end of the second quarter, to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 38-13 win Sunday over the New York Giants in an NFC wild-card game.

The Packers move on to face the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round next week.

Rodgers was 25 of 40 for 362 yards, continuing a remarkable run of quarterback play that helped the Packers win their final six games of the regular season to take the NFC North.

Cobb finished with five receptions for 116 yards and three scores.

For much of the first half, the Giants’ defense flustered the two-time NFL MVP. They got pressure on Rodgers and the secondary blanketed the Packers’ talented receiving corps , and a few boos even rained down from the stands after New York built a 6-0 lead on two field goals by Robbie Gould.

As it turned out, Rodgers was just getting started.

“We hit a Hail Mary. That got us going,” Rodgers said.

Green Bay scored two touchdowns in the final 2:20 of the second quarter, punctuated by another remarkable desperation pass by Rodgers.

With the ball on the Giants 42, Rodgers took the snap with 6 seconds left.

He rolled to his right before heaving a throw from about the Packers 47. Cobb somehow got behind three defensive backs near the back of the end zone to haul in the pass, getting both feet down before falling out of bounds.

The Giants looked stunned, just like how the Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals looked last season after Rodgers pulled off similar feats.

“Davante (Adams) made a bunch of plays,” Rodgers said. “And Randall Cobb, who this offense has been missing for a long time. We’re better with 18 on the field and he showed it tonight.”

Rodgers and Cobb weren’t done.

They connected again on a 30yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter for a 21-13 lead. That score answered a Giants scoring drive that

Try to combat stress of infertility Dear Doctor: My husband and I are trying to have a baby, but we’re having problems conceiving. Could my stress be to blame?

Dear Reader: First, let’s consider a couple of statistics, specifically as they relate to women. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 6.1 percent of married women between the ages of 18 and 44 are infertile, while 12.3 percent of women between the ages of 18 and 44 have difficulty getting pregnant. Infertility is known to be linked to alcohol use and smoking, and possibly caffeine, so in assessing your own risk factors, I first would look at those potential influencers.

The best study of stress and pregnancy was among 401 married couples in Michigan and Texas attempting to get pregnant. The women in this study were followed for 12 months. They filled out questionnaires to assess their stress levels and took part in a measurement of their saliva’s amylase.

Salivary amylase is an enzyme that has been shown to be a reliable marker of psychosocial stress. Levels of it rise with increased activity of the sympathetic (“flight or fight”) nervous system.

This study found the group of women with the highest level of amylase was 29 percent less likely to become pregnant than those with the lowest level of amylase.

Further, the level of amylase correlated well to a woman’s stress level based on the scores from the questionnaires that were filled out.

So it seems reasonable that psychological stress can reduce the chance of getting pregnant.

Further, simply trying to become pregnant and being unable to do so can create stress, as many studies have shown. A Korean study found the levels of psychological distress were significantly higher in women who had difficulty conceiving compared with women who were able to conceive. This

Even the stress of fertility treatments can affect a woman’s ability to get pregnant.

One study found women who were undergoing fertility treatment and were part of a support or therapy group had a 54 percent conception rate, while those who were not in a support group had a 20 percent conception rate.

Note men are not immune to the negative aspects of stress. Men who have experienced more than two stressful life events have been found to have lower sperm concentration, motility and morphology.

It would be easy for me to tell you: “Stress less.” But no one knows your typical life stressors better than you. My advice is threefold. One, turn to your husband for support.

The two of you are in this together, after all, and he’s in the best position to understand what you’re going through. Second, develop some coping skills through relaxation techniques, meditation or simply going for a walk within nature. Hearing the sounds of the waves as you walk along the beach, listening to the sounds of birds or enjoying the view from a mountain can provide a calming perspective to your everyday life.

And three, if you find yourself still unable to become pregnant, consult a fertility specialist. Having some answers can point you in the right direction – and reduce your stress.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY wife and I and our 13-year-old Jeanne son live in a nice Phillips home we have been remodeling for the last eight years. The problem is, my wife has a hard time getting rid of anything, and she constantly brings home “new projects” that take up space but never get done. At one point, we hired a professional organizer because we had reached the point of having “goat trails” as the only means of navigating our way around the house. We also have a barn that is chockablock full.

I have heard the root cause may be due to an anomaly on a chromosome. How should I approach my wife about getting some genetic testing done? Her mom also is a professional pack rat. The clutter is taking its toll on our relationship – we are in marriage counseling – and on our family. We have so much stuff I can’t breathe. – Suffocating In Montana Dear Suffocating: It is interesting your wife’s mother also has this problem. Hoarding is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, which can run in families, and has been known to be associated with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. It couldn’t hurt if your wife had genetic testing done, but the suggestion might be better coming from the marriage counselor rather than from you, because if she hears it from you, she might become defensive or resistant.

Dear Abby: I have worked at the same small company for 25 years. All but one of the employees have been with this company for more than 20 years. “Grace” has been here only three years. She is pleasant, funny, trustworthy and easy to be around. However, she never brings her own lunch.

If something is in the refrigerator, she feels it is fair game to eat it. If I bring something she wants, she will come up to me, take the bag and ask, “What’s for lunch this week?”

I keep snacks in my desk, and she knows which drawer I keep them in. When I reach for something to hold me over, sometimes the drawer will be empty and the bag will be on her desk or in her trash. It infuriates me.

I have made subtle comments on how this upsets me. I have progressed to no longer bringing my lunch. I know she can afford her own lunch. She earns more than I do and doesn’t have children or a mortgage. How do I tell this woman to keep her hands off my lunch and snacks? – Hungry In Houston Dear Hungry: How “trustworthy” can Grace be if she steals your food? When her outrageous behavior and petty thievery started, you shouldn’t have hinted – you should have told the woman to keep her hands off your lunch and out of your desk drawers. If she didn’t respect your wishes, you should have reported it to your supervisor or your boss.It’s still not too late to do that, and I suggest if there isn’t a policy in your company handbook pertaining to this kind of pilfering that one be included.

This week, let’s look at the best bids and plays by junior players (under 26) last year.

First, a good defense by Filip Jelic from Serbia.

Six hearts is no bargain, but if you push there, you must try to make it.

In this sequence, South’s move over four hearts was questionable.

With an unavoidable club loser and only nine top tricks (one spade, five hearts, one diamond and two clubs), South has to play the spade suit without loss. He must find West with the king, but what about the 10?

The right line is to win with dummy’s diamond ace, ruff the diamond 10 in hand, draw trumps (the 2-2 break doesn’t hurt) and play three rounds of clubs.

If the clubs are 4-2, and South has to ruff the fourth round, then he should lead the spade queen from hand. Maybe West will not cover. But if he does, declarer returns to hand with a trump and runs the spade nine.

Here, if West takes the third club, he is endplayed. So let’s assume West defends well, throwing away his queen on the second round. When East shifts to a low spade at trick eight, South plays low from hand.

Here, that forces out West’s king and declarer is home.

How did Jelic defend? South started clubs with his king, then on the second round, Jelic correctly played his queen. But declarer decided that this was from an initial queen-doubleton (and West had erred in not throwing his queen under the king), so South played low from the board.

Jelic exited with his third club to defeat the slam.
