Ugly video no excuse for ugly commentary POLL YESTERDAY’S

There’s been some argument about whether the actions depicted in the video of a white teenager tied up and tormented by four black people – three of them teens – in Chicago this week should be classified as a hate crime.

There’s was a push for it to be labeled as such, and that’s the angle that the media has often played up.

But were I among the four accused, whether it was classified as a hate crime or not wouldn’t top my list of worries. In Illinois, a hate crime carries a penalty of one to three years in prison.

The most serious charge that the four people face in connection with this week’s incident is aggravated kidnapping, which carries a six- to 30-year prison sentence.

There you have the disconnect between the sensational and the real. Aggravated kidnapping is a much more serious accusation, but a “hate crime” plays into the racial narrative that’s worked its way into this story of a mentally ill teenager from Crystal Lake who was bound, gagged and abused by four captors in a Chicago apartment.

This is a case where the legal system has it more correct than the general public. The truth is that it doesn’t matter what the race of the victim or the perpetrators was – anyone who has seen the video agrees that the acts it depicts are wrong.

There are no sides to choose. There is no reason to try to politicize this crime by pinning it on the Black Lives Matter movement.

No one is entitled to throw out racial stereotypes and slurs on social media.

As a society, we can agree that what was shown on the video was criminal behavior.

The perpetrators themselves documented the crime and they’re almost certain to face consequences for it.

Some of the tormentors on the video said cuss words about white people and Donald Trump, which led people to push for it to be labeled a hate crime. The law also says that attacks on people who are mentally disabled can be hate crimes, and the victim suffers from schizophrenia and attention deficit disorder.

But the victim had been hanging out with these people when they turned on him. They didn’t abduct him off the street at random because he was white. The victim told police they tied him up after a play fight got out of hand.

But hate crime or no, the broader point is that it’s a serious crime, one that would be abhorrent regardless the race of the victim or the accused.

It shouldn’t be politicized.

WASHINGTON – A Republican lawmaker removed a high school student’s painting from a Capitol Hill display Friday because it shows a pig in a police uniform aiming a gun at African-American protesters. The image was inspired by the shooting and protests in Ferguson, Missouri.

Rep. Duncan Hunter of California unscrewed the painting from a hallway display that includes hundreds of works of art and returned it to the office of Democratic Rep. William Lacy Clay, who sponsored the work and represents a St. Louis congressional district.

Joe Kasper, a spokesman for Hunter, said “there’s nothing appropriate” about the painting.

He said the artwork was the subject of discussion when GOP lawmakers gathered for a morning caucus meeting. When Hunter left the meeting, he walked to the display and took it off the wall.

“He made sure he returned it safe and sound, all in one piece,” Kasper said.

Hunter did not speak with Clay about the portrait, and Kasper said it was Clay’s prerogative to return the painting to the display. A spokesman for Clay says the congressman was unavailable for comment.

The painting showed a police officer taking aim at protesters with signs saying “history” and “stop kill.” The police officer has an elongated face with tusks, much like a razorback pig.

Kish College’s president has overseen several changes in 1st year at helm

browland@shawmedia.com MALTA – Kishwaukee College plans to continue its focus on student success in 2017, with President Laurie Borowicz entering her second year at the two-year college.

The college’s board picked Borowicz to lead the school after predecessor Tom Choice retired at the end of 2015. Borowicz left her position as vice president of student services for Northcentral Technical College in Wausau, Wisconsin, to become Kish College’s fifth president in January 2016.

Two months later, the board announced a layoff plan to help the college plug an anticipated budget shortfall. The 24 layoffs were the first reduction in force in the college’s history and came as the school struggled with the fallout from the state budget standoff and declining enrollment.

Later in the year, the college lost a number of administrators to other jobs. Among them were two chief financial officers.

Other changes followed. The college slashed the number of athletic scholarships it offers, deciding instead to recruit more student-athletes from within the district’s boundaries, which encompass most of DeKalb County, including the communities of DeKalb, Sycamore, Genoa, Kingston, Kirkland, Waterman and Shabbona, along with the Rochelle area in Ogle County and part of Lee County.

In September, the board approved a $34.5 million spending plan that was $3.2 million less than the previous fiscal year.

Borowicz is optimistic about the college’s future and pleased with what she and the board have accomplished in the past year.

“What I’m most proud of at Kishwaukee College is truly starting to change the culture,” she said. “I believe we are changing the culture of this college, and everyone understands that we’re going to make decisions based on what’s in the best interests of our students.”

She said the cultural shift will take time and won’t always be easy, but that, ultimately, it will simplify the decision-making process.

dents’ success, including by working with career and technical education students to make sure they find jobs, and helping undecided students find direction.

“I really want to work on strengthening our programming to help our undecided students,” she said. “Those are things we’ve talked about over the course of the year, but other things have been the priority.”

Borowicz said the college also plans to move forward with interest-based bargaining practices with its unions.

Interest-based bargaining was used to reach a contract agreement with the

college’s support staff union in December and will be employed in upcoming talks with the faculty union. The union’s contract expires at the end of June. The last negotiation saw the union on the brink of a strike when a deal was reached in January 2015.

College board Chairman Robert Johnson praised Borowicz’s leadership.

“She stepped into a whirlwind with the state budget impasse and the reduction in force,” he said. “As a board, we’ve been more than pleased.”

Johnson said he had a good working relationship with Borowicz and

was confident in her leadership of the college’s staff, whose work he also lauded.

Even so, challenges remain. The college’s enrollment is 17 percent below where it was in 2007, Borowicz said.

“There are many factors that can be attributed to the decline in enrollment, including a rebounding economy,” she said. “Enrollment and the unemployment rate have an inverse relationship.”

State funding is another issue. The college – which Johnson described as “lean” – wants to be less reliant on the state for funding. Without raising property taxes, that leaves tuition increases and philanthropy to bridge the gap.

The board is working closely with the school’s foundation to help students, especially those who rely on state Monetary Award Program grants to pay for school.

“This is an outstanding college,” he said. “We’re in a very good place.”

Dog, owner reunite 3 years after escape

DeKALB – Terri Maynard had given up hope of finding her dog Jessie when three years passed after the dog escaped from the family’s backyard in Kirkland.

But over the holidays she got an unexpected call from TAILS Humane Society.

Someone surrendered Jessie to the DeKalb shelter.

Maynard moved to North Carolina in 2014, but she was in town visiting family when TAILS staff contacted her about a dog with her phone number listed on file through her microchip.

“I was home for nine days when they called. What are the odds?” Maynard said. “It was my own little Christmas miracle.”

She said she asked her sister to return the phone call from TAILS because she was too overwhelmed to speak.

“I was so excited she was still alive,” Maynard said. “I couldn’t believe it.”

TAILS Executive Director Michelle Groeper said it seemed another family found and kept Jessie for the past few years.

“They didn’t receive any leads or updates on her search and have desperately tried to find her,” Groeper said. “Little did they know that Jessie was most likely found by a family [and] kept as their family pet.”

Maynard said Jessie, a rat terrier who is now 10 years old, has always been an “escape artist,” so the family was not overly concerned when the dog got loose.

“Sometimes she’s gone and comes back the next morning,” Maynard said.

“She has a collar with her name, and all the neighbors know her.”

Maynard’s daughter was visiting home at the time and let Jessie outside without realizing she needed to be closely watched.

Not only did Jessie seem to remember her owner when she was picked up from TAILS, but she also went right to her water dish and chair when she returned to her old family home in Kirkland.

“It was incredible,” Maynard said.

“She knew me.”

Jessie had always been an “alpha dog” in the house, so her two boxer brothers acknowledged her like nothing happened.

“Nobody had an issue,” Maynard said.

Jessie is now “totally acclimated” to her new home in North Carolina, where she was reunited with her Doberman sister, Lexus, 13, whom she also seemed to remember, and met her new Chihuahua brother, Buddy, 2.

Maynard raised Jessie from an 8-week-old puppy, and now that Jessie is back, she is spending some time training her to relearn some of the manners she was taught in the past.

“Not knowing makes you crazy,” Maynard said. “It’s nice to have her back home where she belongs.”

Groeper said Jessie’s story is a reminder that stray or lost pets may have

families that are looking for them.

“It’s never safe to assume that the pet is yours to keep,” she said. “Please make every effort to help reconnect lost pets with their families.”

Groeper said it is also important to make sure pets are microchipped with current owner, phone number and address information.

She said in 2016, TAILS reunited 35

pets with their owners, 21 of which were microchipped, and most of the 40 stray dogs and 140 stray cats the shelter took in that year were not microchipped.

“Had they been chipped, we may have reunited a lot more with their owners,” Groeper said. “The microchip is not a GPS tracking device, it simply offers a link to the animal and the owner on file.”

Elsie (Gropp) Lindahl. She was a 1947 graduate of Sycamore High School. Jean married Marvin Peplow on April 12, 1951 in Sycamore. She retired James L. Arends, 92, of DeKalb, Illinois, died from DeKalb Ag after 25 years, where she worked Thursday, January 5, 2017, at his home.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com KIRKLAND – A hunter was flown to a Rockford hospital Thursday after a search-and-rescue operation at the Kishwaukee River State Fish and Wildlife Area.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies were called to an area off Kirkland Road at 7:28 p.m. to locate the 31-year old man, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. Police did not name the man.

DeKalb County Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan called the rescue operation “very fortunate.” Given the extreme cold, the outcome could have been grim.

The hunter had been accompanied by a friend, but didn’t have a cellphone. The friend left, but later heard the man’s screams when he returned to check on him.

A search-and-rescue effort began on the 570-acre site with the aid of the Kirkland Fire Department, Kirkland Police Department, Kingston Police Department and the Illinois Department of Conser-

vation Police. The locks at the wildlife area had been changed, so it took some time for emergency responders to get access to the site.

By 8:32 p.m., the hunter was located by firefighters and conservation police. He couldn’t move after partially falling into the Kishwaukee River on a night when the outside temperature was about 6 degrees, according to the news release.

Members of the search party carried the man out of the woods at 10:30 p.m. He was flown by helicopter to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford at 10:50 p.m.

The Springfield State Journal-Register SPRINGFIELD – Phil Jones, a snow inspector for the city of Springfield, drove a public works pickup down Laurel Street on Thursday morning.

After a few blocks, he pulled over and grabbed the laptop off the mount on the dashboard. Jones clicked the stretch he’d just inspected on a map of city streets, showing blue for “uninvestigated,” and switched it to orange for “patches of ice and snow.”

“The main objective is clear curb to curb, but right now, I say patches of ice and snow because this whole lane here is snow,” he said, pointing to the outer lane of the street. “I put that in, and then once I save it, this turns orange.”

Jones is trying out a new software program that allows inspectors to track road conditions during winter storms in close-to-real time.

Engineers from the public works and information technology departments built the program that they hope will make the snow-removal process more efficient and provide better information to the public during snowstorms.

The program and accompanying map are in testing phases, according to Public Works Director Mark Mahoney,

CARBONDALE – Supporters of a new measure signed into law Friday

by Gov. Bruce Rauner said it will help alleviate Illinois’ teacher shortage, particularly in rural areas.

The new law will make it easier for teachers who move to Illinois to transfer a teaching Bruce license, provided the Rauner state they move from has comparable licensing requirements. The bill unanimously passed both chambers of the General Assembly in November.

The measure also reduces state requirements for people with four-year college degrees who want to be substitute

Reagan statue plans stall after Dixon mayor’s death

DIXON – A plan to erect a statute of President Ronald Reagan as a young lifeguard is on hold in his hometown.

The Chicago Tribune reported Dixon Mayor Jim Burke was leading the effort to place a statue along the Rock River.

But Burke died in February, and the project has stalled.

When the sewer department began using a new software program, Cityworks, to track sewer line conditions and repairs in 2015, Potts saw an opportunity to build a more advanced tool and help the snow crews as well.

“I went through some classes that had to do with rating the sewer system, and went through a couple more classes that deal with asset management, and everything just came together,” Potts said. “It more or less developed into what we’re using now.”

Driver gets 15 years for killing construction worker

DAVENPORT, Iowa – A man has been given 15 years in prison for killing a worker in an eastern Iowa highway construction zone.

Nineteen-year-old Sebon Reese was sentenced Thursday in Scott County District Court in Davenport. He’d pleaded guilty to eluding and vehicular homicide.

Officials said a deputy spotted Reese’s speeding car Sept. 1 on U.S. Highway 61 near Blue Grass. His car entered a work zone before the deputy could pull it over.

Investigators said Reese tried to exit the highway but careened into the construction area, hitting 62-year-old Willie Holley, of Rock Island, Illinois. Holley was pronounced dead later at a hospital.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that Santiago had walked into the FBI office in his hometown of Anchorage, Alaska, in November to say that the U.S. government was controlling his mind and making him watch Islamic State videos.

Agents questioned him and called police, who took him for a mental health evaluation, according to the official, who was not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Authorities said the motive for the attack was under investigation. Shortly after the shooting, and before details of Santiago’s mental health became public, Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida said that it remained to be seen whether it was terrorism or the work of “someone who is mentally deranged.”

One witness said the attacker gunned down his victims without a word and kept shooting until he ran out of ammunition for his handgun, sending panicked travelers running out of the terminal and spilling onto the tarmac, baggage in hand.

Others crouched behind cars or anything else they could find to shield themselves as police and paramedics rushed in to help the wounded and establish whether there were any other gunmen. The airport was shut down.

“People started kind of screaming and trying to get out of any door they could or hide under the chairs,” a witness, Mark Lea, told MSNBC. “He just kind of continued coming in, just randomly shooting at people, no rhyme or reason to it.”

It is legal for airline passengers to travel with guns and ammunition as long as the firearms are put in a checked bag – not a carry-on – and are unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container. Guns must be declared to the airline at check-in.

Santiago arrived in Fort Lauderdale after taking off from Anchorage aboard a Delta flight Thursday night, checking only one piece of luggage – his gun, said Jesse Davis, police chief at the Anchorage airport.

At Fort Lauderdale, “after he claimed his bag, he went into the bathroom and loaded the gun and started shooting. We don’t know why,” said Chip LaMarca, a Broward County commissioner who was briefed by investigators.

The bloodshed is likely to raise questions of whether aviation safety officials need to change the rules.

MINNEAPOLIS – Rocked by a threatened player boycott of a bowl game over the handling of a sexual assault investigation and struggling with lagging attendance at its shiny stadium, the Minnesota football program badly needed of an injection of energy and optimism.

They don’t come any more exuberant than P.J. Fleck.

Minnesota hired Fleck on Friday, hoping that “Row the boat” mantra that worked wonders at Western Michigan can unite a deeply fractured program.

“I’m not here to change the tradition,” Fleck said at his introductory news conference. “I am here to change the culture.”

Fleck was a star football player at Kaneland High School and Northern Illinois University.

The hiring comes three days after athletic director Mark Coyle fired Tracy Claeys after a standoff between players and the administration over the suspension of 10 players in connection with the assault allegations. Coyle turned to the breathlessly upbeat Fleck to help bridge the divisions that remain between the team and school leaders.

Fleck promised to do the same at Minnesota, a program that has been largely irrelevant for the past 50 years, with the goal of competing for national titles.

“I’m going to promise you a lot because that’s the way I live my life,” he said.

Minnesota is buzzing for different reasons.

Players threatened last month to boycott the Holiday Bowl after expressing reservations about a university investigation that led to the suspensions.

Some suspended players were accused of pressuring a woman into sex during a party after the team’s season-opening win over Oregon State. Prosecutors twice declined to file charges, but the school’s investigation found that 10 players violated its conduct code and could face punishments up to and including expulsion. The appeals process is still pending.

Some large Florida cities, such as Miami, reported no hate crimes to the FBI in 2015, said Brian Levin, the director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, California State University. “I doubt that cities as diverse as those had no hate crimes,” he said.

In Chicago, two men and two women – all black – are facing hate crime charges in connection with the brutal beating of a mentally disabled white man that was streamed on Facebook Live. The video shows the victim is tied up and the suspects are making racial slurs and references to his mental capacity, Chicago Police Cmdr. Kevin Duffin said.

The suspects are accused of forcing the victim to drink toilet water and kiss the floor, stuffing a sock into his mouth, taping his mouth shut and binding his hands with a belt.

The 18-year-old victim, who is from Crystal Lake, has schizophrenia and attention-deficit disorder, authorities said.

The victim also was taunted with profanities against white people and President-elect Donald Trump.

Eighteen-year-olds Brittany Covington, Tesfaye Cooper and Jordan Hill, and 24-year-old Tanishia Covington also face kidnapping and battery charges in connection with the attack.

The case heightened political tensions on social media and opened yet-to-be healed wounds from a nasty presidential election campaign. Some conservatives suggested the attack highlighted growing anti-white violence and was linked to the Black Lives Matter movement, although police said there was no indication of any connection.

The FBI does classify attacks based on disability as a hate crime. Federal numbers show 88 incidents related to attacks on disability in 2015.

In addition to underreporting, Levin said strong federal data of the race and ethnicity of assailants is incomplete because of the lack of consistent reporting.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The horrific beating of a mentally disabled white man in Chicago by four black assailants broadcast on social media is highlighting anti-white hate crimes at a time of increased racial strife in the U.S. But federal statistics and experts say anti-white incidents remain a smaller percentage of overall hate crimes. Anti-black hate crimes still are the largest number of cases.

According to the 2015 FBI hate crime statistics, the latest available, there were 613 anti-white-related crimes out of 5,850 total cases. That’s around 10.5 percent of all reported hate crimes, and within the yearly average, federal numbers show.

By comparison, the FBI reports there were 1,745 anti-black hate crimes or about 30 percent of all reported incidents. Jews were the most targeted religious group that year and were victims

of 11 percent of all hate crimes. It’s not clear how many anti-Jewish hate crime victims also may have been attacked because of their race.

That data also suggested that blacks and Jews remain disproportionally targets of hate crimes compared to their population as opposed to whites. Blacks are only 13 percent of the U.S. population, while non-Hispanic whites are 61 percent.

The FBI defines a hate crime as a “criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity.”

Filing reports for the federal count is voluntary, but guidelines call for reports to be submitted even if they list zero hate crimes.

Even then, experts say the FBI data on hate crimes isn’t a full picture since anti-black cases are skewed lower by the lack of reporting participation by some southern law enforcement agencies.

Population decrease cause for alarm

Illinois certainly didn’t get much of a Christmas gift from the U.S. Census Bureau.

A report right before the holiday that the state’s population had fallen for a third straight year was more like a lump of coal in its Christmas stocking.

Illinois’ population, which stands at about 12.8 million, shed 37,508 people in 2016.

That’s after losing 22,194 people in 2015 and 7,391 in 2014.

We’re not growing anymore.

We’re shrinking.

Last year’s decline was driven by the excessively large number of Illinoisans who moved out of state – 114,144 to be exact. Newborns and newcomers, unfortunately, were unable to make up for the heavy rate of departures.

Why are people leaving?

A number of reasons, actually. High taxes. More and better employment opportunities elsewhere. An incompetent state government. Bad weather.

How does the outmigration of 114,144 Illinoisans compare to neighboring states?

Unfavorably.

Michigan, between July 2015 and July 2016, had an outmigration of 27,839.

Other outmigrations for the same period: Wisconsin, 12,395; Indiana, 12,135; Missouri, 6,250; and Iowa, 3,392.

Where does DeKalb County stand in all this?

We’re losing population, too. Between July 2010 and July 2015, DeKalb County lost 815 residents, a decline of 0.8 percent, according to the Census Bureau. The county’s population was measured at 105,160 in July 2010 and 104,345 in July 2015.

Leaders in Illinois, in general, and DeKalb County specifically, need to be aware that whatever they’ve been doing to attract newcomers and keep current residents hasn’t been enough.

People will stay in areas that have plentiful opportunities for employment and good educations.

They’ll stay where they feel safe and where the quality of life is top-notch. They’ll stay if they believe they are receiving efficient government services at a fair rate of taxation.

If they can’t get those things here, they’ll pick up and move elsewhere – hence our declining population.

As the new year progresses, we encourage leaders to study this problem, develop initiatives to deal with it, and always keep it in mind as they make decisions regarding the region’s future – a future that now entails fewer taxpayers, fewer fee payers, fewer consumers and fewer users of governmental services.

Not willing to accept Trump as world leader

To the Editor: It’s me again, in this altered state as are all I know after such a time.

My nervous stomach is a daily dread now. Continual assaults mean that capitulation is impossible, reconciliation aloof; facts and answers found brimming in and around the trash bin.

Yet here we are. We are here.

So, what to do with this anger and portioned disbelief, although much of me knew this was likely to happen? Do what I have always tried to do: Raise as many good questions as I can; hold feet to flame; reveal and share whatever warns of harm’s way. It doesn’t always help, but I fear doing nothing bodes worse.

But lately, there seems to be a bizarre and growing attitude of acceptance of our leadership-elect.

We seem to be afraid to criticize those who threw sense to the wind in order to achieve “change,” any change, or spite a political family by voting for a poorly drawn cartoon of a person.

In disbelief, I ramble. But this is what I know now: If one considers me to be smug for rejecting a misogynist (for one thing), I am proudly smug.

If I am closed-minded to cringe at the idea of having a president whose own abhorrent words and filmed actions, not those spun by the media, can build his seat (a throne?) at the top, then my mind is and will be happily closed until the next election.

Maybe I need to be forgiven because I cannot forgive those, no matter their experience, who recklessly, willingly cast a vote for a man so sleazy, so immature, so egocentric – his eyes gilded

shut – simply to have a change, just to exercise their ire against the Clintons and/or Barack Obama.

These folks have taken the nation and its influence and mocked it – casting it down like a marble onto a roulette wheel for spite, for change. But guess what, folks: That marble still lands within the same circle, the numbers and color possibilities are still the same and all, save one, who plays that game still loses.

As an educator, I beseech us to learn from this shortsighted error in judgment; to be involved in future accountability, to inform a better process and to remember that this will need to be atoned for and somehow explained to our progeny.

So what will Trump’s presidency bring? Will America be “great again”?

Will we “have win after win” until we “get sick and tired of winning”?

I doubt it.

It would be easier to judge progress had the Libertarian Party candidate won. We could measure whether the

party kept its promise to shrink government, cut spending, lower taxes, decrease overseas military commitments, deregulate and butt out of people’s private lives.

Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, sounding like the founders of our nation, often answered reporters’ grandiose questions by saying, “I’m not running for king.” Unlike Donald Trump, a narcissistic bully who often tells us he’s “in charge,” Johnson understood that decision-making power is best left in the hands of individual citizens.

Libertarians also respect Friedrich Hayek’s insight: “The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they know about what they imagine they can design.”

Will such modesty carry weight in Trump’s administration? I’m still hopeful. So are stock market investors. But none of us know enough to be sure.

I assume 2017 will be about the same as the years before, even with someone as unusual as Trump in the White House.

He talks about “draining the swamp,” but we’ve seen how quickly he can pivot back to business as usual.

Many Iowa voters love the federal government’s ethanol subsidies

(although they’re cruel and expensive to most of America), so during Iowa’s Republican primary, Trump joined the ethanol-praising club. In fact, he said regulators should force gas stations to increase the ethanol they use.

It was a pander to try to take votes from Trump’s main Iowa rival, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who courageously said the ethanol mandate should be phased out.

Trump is a businessman, so I assume he knew that the ethanol mandate is a special interest scam. But in Iowa, Trump just said, “Ethanol is terrific.”

I fear that 2017 will bring us more of the same: politicians doing what they think will make the loudest voters happy.

They want us to think we can have it both ways – that we can reduce deficits while boosting spending on infrastructure and defense and not touching entitlements, etc. That’s what Donald Trump has promised.

I hope he breaks many of his promises soon.

We imagine “Life Would Be Perfect If I Lived in That House,” as Meghan Daum titled her astute and funny memoir about her search for “domestic integrity.”

On HGTV, those ideals are all about family and friends. Homeowners say things like, “We’re doing this for our family” and “This is where our kids are going to grow up” They picture their kids running around in the backyard and refer to their own happy childhoods. B-roll shows families making dinner together or playing in

the park. Many episodes feature newlyweds, visibly pregnant women, and couples who’ve been living with their parents – an arrangement the network never stigmatizes – and are ready to set out on their own.

But fear not single people: If you’re on HGTV, you have a passel of friends and entertain frequently around your kitchen island or backyard grill. No one is lonely here.

Sure, much of this appeal is a fantasy. Your life is still your life, even if your house is brand new. Entropy will have its way. But when trapped in an airport with an inescapable TV, instead of 24-hour news it would certainly be nice to watch a little house flipping.

Two more weeks until the new administration begins.

I wonder if President Donald Trump will stick to his campaign promises – such as reducing immigration and slamming consumers by imposing a 35 percent tariff.

Hope not.

But it could have been much worse.

Bernie Sanders wanted to make college free, although professors say classes are filled with privileged students who party and just kill time.

Both Sanders and Hillary Clinton promised a higher minimum wage and a thousand other new commandments that would do more harm than good.

Every Republican candidate vowed to increase defense spending, although the U.S. is going broke and already spends more than the next seven biggest nations combined, while half the democratic world freeloads off America’s armed forces.

I’m relieved that many of Trump’s promises were vague or contradictory.

That allows me to hope that he’ll only do things that I like.

At this point, I’m in somewhat of an infatuation period, similar to one afflicting a teenager excited about a new boyfriend or girlfriend.

No, I’m not infatuated with Trump.

With the Indian Creek girls basketball team clinging to a one-point lead in the final minutes of overtime, Harvell connected on a clutch 3-pointer that gave the Timberwolves enough of a cushion in a 44-41 victory over Earlville-Leland on Friday night.

“I just let it fly,” Harvell said. “I kind of missed a couple early on, but I was feeling it, so I shot it. I was so into the game. I had so much adrenaline. I had to make it.”

Harvell finished with a team-high 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

However, the senior wing’s most important basket came with the Timberwolves leading 37-36 in overtime when she connected on a 3-pointer on the left wing with 1:32 remaining.

“When we’re playing our best, we’re playing unselfish,” Piekarz said.

“We were hitting shots today because guys were trying to find other guys.”

Extra passes: The Timberwolves led by as much as 37 after junior Jordan Morris made a layup and connected on a 3-pointer to put them up, 72-35, midway through the fourth quarter. ... SHABBONA – The Indian Creek boys basketball team led by six points late in the first quarter.

Then came the barrage of 3-pointers by Trevor Guerra.

The Timberwolves’ star senior guard got red-hot from beyond the arc, and Indian Creek distanced itself from Earlville-Leland, winning, 73-40, Friday.

Indian Creek (12-2, 4-0 Little Ten Conference) was leading, 11-5, in the closing seconds of the first quarter before Guerra connected on a 3-pointer in four consecutive possessions – the final one of the first quarter and the first three of the second quarter.

“What was so key, and I think Trevor realizes this, his teammates got him open,” Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz said. “Where he gets the glory of knocking down the shots, the teammates executed those plays very well and got him good looks. When we can feed the hot hand, that’s always a good thing.”

Guerra finished the night with a game-high 19 points – connecting on another 3-pointer late in the second quarter, his fifth of the game and fourth of the quarter.

“I give all the credit to my teammates, they set good screens and got me open,” Guerra said. “I had the easy part.”

Indian Creek junior big man Nolan Govig had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Earlville-Leland was led by guard Joe Aviles, who scored a team-high 14 points and went 9 for 11 from the freethrow line.

For the Timberwolves, it was the first game of the new year and the first game since a heartbreaking loss to Serena in the championship game of the Marseilles Holiday Tournament.

“We had a tough loss to Serena; we didn’t play our best basketball,” Guerra said. “We were very upset about that, obviously. We didn’t bring our best.”

With the score tied in the closing seconds, Serena got a tip-in before the buzzer to win, 51-49.

“When you have a loss like that, you can take it different ways,”

didn’t quite show that. We were able to run the offense we’ve been practicing, but we struggled to get back on defense tonight. We got a lot of different looks and it was nice to see us be able to actually run an offense in a game.”

Although the Hawks showed spurts of offense after the first quarter, turnovers and failing to get back on defense hurt them in their effort to cut into the Royals’ lead.

“We had spurts where we looked about as well as we have all year on offense,” H-BR coach Doug Brewington said. “We did what we needed to do offensively. Our two guards, Ann and Emily, shot the ball well and were aggressive. They forced their defenders to sag off and were able to get the

open shots. It’s nice to be able to have those two players on opposite sides of the floor to keep teams off balance.”

BOYS BASKETBALL Hinckley-Big Rock 65, Hiawatha 34: In

the second game of the doubleheader, H-BR (2-13, 1-3 LTC) grabbed an early lead over Hiawatha (1-9, 1-3). Kota Gum, Seth Misukanis and Cameron Rompf led the Royals with 12 points each. Isaiah Rosas led the Hawks with 11 points.

“One of the things we’ve struggled with is translating what we do in practice to games,” H-BR coach Bill Sambrookes said. “After having a good week of practice this week, it was nice to see them perform the way they did tonight.”

treynolds@saukvalley.com STERLING – The DeKalb boys basketball team knew what to expect from Sterling on Friday night.

Then the Barbs executed the game plan to perfection.

The Barbs pressured the Warriors into 15 turnovers and limited them to 14 baskets in a 46-38 victory in Northern Illinois Big 12 action at Musgrove Fieldhouse.

Sterling (8-5, 1-1) struggled from the start, and never found any rhythm on offense. The Warriors fell behind 12-5 after one quarter, and the margin was the same (21-14) at halftime.

Some of that was because of DeKalb’s defense. The Barbs (10-3, 4-0) made sure nothing came easy for the Warriors, closing out on shooters and getting hands in passing lanes.

“We preach to the guys to know your personnel,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said. “I thought we did a great job identifying their shooters, their drivers, and knowing what to take away defensively. One of our team pillars is active defense, and I think we took them out of running their sets, and then made some big plays in key situations.”

Throughout the second half, every time Sterling got a little momentum, the Barbs would grab it right back.

Dimitric Young’s three-point play for Sterling cut the deficit to 25-21, but DeKalb post Darvon Sisson’s putback extended the Barbs’ lead.

drove the lane for a layup for the Warriors, then Micah Kendrick drove to the hoop and kicked it out to Sean Gingrich for a 3-pointer from the left corner to get within 29-28. But again Sisson answered, this time isolating his defender on the right wing before exploding to the basket with a two-handed slam dunk.

“We controlled the ball and were really patient on offense,” said Sisson, who had 21 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks. “We were strong with the ball, everybody got to open spots, and the guards found the right guys at the right time.”

DeKalb stretched the lead to 37-30 with 3:50 to play, then Gingrich buried another 3 from the same spot, this time off a Williams drive-and-kick, to make it a four-point game. Kendrick hit a hanger in the lane, and Young followed with a free throw to get within 39-36 with 1:31 to play, but the Warriors got no closer.

Cole Tucker scored a layup after the Barbs broke the full-court press, then Sisson added a dunk a few possessions later for the final exclamation point.

“We came out flat, and they put it to us,” Kendrick said. “They scouted us well and really wanted to win, and we didn’t come out ready to play, and that’s not us. That can’t happen. We always want to get a stop then get a score, and we didn’t do enough of that tonight on either end.”

Tucker finished with nine points and three rebounds, Marcus Bobo had six points and three boards, and Michael Mitchell added five points and three assists for DeKalb.

Season gets underway Sunday at the NIU Convocation Center

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A year ago, the Northern Illinois gymnastics team sent six individuals to the NCAA Regionals.

Now the goal is to send the whole squad in 2017.

“They all came back hungry and wanting to bring the whole team,” coach Sam Morreale said. “It’s always good to get multiple kids down there, and, granted, we might not be ready to be one of the top two teams in a region, but we feel like we match up pretty well against everything else.”

The Huskies, who have not made the NCAA Regionals as a team since 1995, open their season hosting Lindenwood, Iowa and Western Michigan at 1 p.m. Sunday at the NIU Convocation Center.

NIU returns five of the six gymnasts who either qualified or were alternates for the NCAA Regionals in Tuscaloosa, Alabama – including Jamyra Carter, Megan Greenfield, Andie Van Voorhis, Ashley Potts and Anna Martucci.

“For this year, I told myself to make every practice and every workout count because it’s my last year and I want to have fun with it,” said Carter, who finished tied for 22nd in the uneven bars with a score of 9.775 at the NCAA Regionals. “It was such a good experience that I really, really want my whole team to go.”

For Potts, who finished fifth in the all-around at the Mid-American Conference Championships last season, it was a valuable experience to even be an alternate for the NCAA Regionals last season.

“It was cool being there and seeing how they got treated and everything, but it would be way better being part of it,” Potts said. “We sat in the audience for the actual meet. ... I learned that they’re not that much better than us. I think you assume that because they’re huge schools, they are more talented, but it’s more form, so I feel like we’re in the same place as them.”

As a team, the Huskies went 9-10 overall and 2-4 in the MAC last year, but finished 4-1 at the NIU Convocation Center.

“It’s exciting to finally get a meet,” Morreale said. “We can try to mimic it, we can make it seem like a meet in (practice) and we’ve done those high-pressure situations and we’ve done well with them, so now the next step is getting in and getting a meet.”

HINCKLEY – The Hinckley-Big Rock girls basketball team rode the wave of its early lead to take down Hiawatha, 66-49, Friday night.

Hinckley-Big Rock (6-12) jumped out to an 8-0 lead 39 seconds into the game, and the visiting Hawks never were able to fully recover.

Toward the end of the first quarter,

Hiawatha (5-8) was able to crawl back into the game, but still trailed by seven at the end of the period, and that was the closest it got the rest of the game.

As the Hawks struggled in some areas, the Royals were clicking on offense and were led by guards Ann Kossman (24 points) and Emily Southern (22). Behind the scoring spree of the two guards and the Royals ability to spread the ball around, H-BR held a comfortable lead throughout the second half.

Hiawatha was led by Michelle Percudani’s 19 points.

“I thought we actually played better than we have been playing recently,” Hiawatha coach Jessica Van Dorin said. “Unfortunately, the score

“It was nice to see her step up and just shoot it,” Indian Creek coach Paul Muchmore said. “She was confident. It wasn’t, ‘Please go in, I want to make up for it.’ She just stepped up and shot it.”

Along with Harvell’s double-double, junior guard Olivia Turner scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds, and junior post Morgan Johnson had seven points and eight rebounds.

Earlville-Leland (10-4, 1-3 Little Ten Conference) got 14 points each from seniors Abigail Eckles and Zoie Reed.

After Harvell’s 3-pointer made it 40-36, she and Turner both made a pair of free throws to give the Timberwolves a 44-41 lead.

However, the Red Raiders got the ball back with three seconds remaining after Indian Creek missed a pair of free throws, and after a timeout, Muchmore elected to foul Earlville-Leland before it could get a 3-point attempt.

“We really haven’t been in that position to be able to hang on and get that win,” Muchmore said. “We didn’t panic when we made a couple of mistakes toward the end there.”

For Indian Creek, which earned third place in Class 1A last season, it was a victory in the midst of improvement. The win improved the Timberwolves to 4-12 overall and 2-3 in the LTC. “We’ve been struggling this year,

so it was nice to see when things went down, we didn’t collapse,” Muchmore said. “We just kept working at it. …

We’re a work in progress.”

The Timberwolves led for most of the first half before Earlville-Leland snuck into halftime with a 17-16 advantage after a layup and two free throws by junior Emily Cook.

The Red Raiders led, 20-16 – their biggest of the night – before the Timberwolves answered with a 7-0 run.

Marisa VanWyhe and Turner had back-to-back layups for Indian Creek, and Harvell drilled a 3-pointer to put the Timberwolves ahead, 23-20, with 3:03 left in the third.

Indian Creek led by as much as four in the final period, but Earlville-Leland got a pair of baskets from Eckles to tie it at 33, and the two teams went scoreless the rest of regulation.

Harvell had two chances to win it at the end of the fourth, but her running shot and putback both rimmed out to send the game into overtime.

“We ended the game confident,” Harvell said. “We knew we could play with them.”

Extra passes: Because of offensive rebounds by Indian Creek and turnovers by Earlville-Leland, the Red Raiders didn’t have a field goal attempt until 4:45 left in the first quarter. … The Timberwolves were 1 for 13 from 3-point range in the first half.

CHICAGO – Scott Darling made a season-high 39 saves, Jonathan Toews and Artemi Panarin scored and the Blackhawks beat the Carolina Hurricanes, 2-1, Friday for their second straight win.

Darling, who backs up Corey Crawford, faced Carolina for the second time in a week in the Hawks’ second home game in two nights after beating Buffalo, 4-3, in overtime Thursday. The consecutive wins against the Sabres and Hurricanes came in the aftermath of a 1-4-1 slump.

Cam Ward made 22 saves in his 15th straight start for Carolina, which won 4-2 Thursday at St. Louis. Victor Rask had Carolina’s goal, connecting against Darling on the Hurricanes’ 31st shot with 4.2 seconds left in the second.

The Hurricanes have dropped three of four.

28 Measles outbreaks stress need for vaccines Dear Doctor: I’ve been reading about measles outbreaks in the United States and abroad. Are these new cases really all that dangerous? As an adult, should I get vaccinated?

Dear Reader: Measles is an ancient and highly contagious respiratory infection. It has inspired fear and dread from its earliest written references, which date all the way back to 600 A.D. It wasn’t until many centuries later, in 1954, that researchers finally were able to isolate the virus that causes the disease. In 1963, scientists in the U.S. developed a successful measles vaccine. Thanks to an aggressive national vaccination program, which continues today, what once had been a common and often-fatal disease has became a rarity. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared measles officially eradicated in 2000 in the U.S. Recently, though, as you point out, new outbreaks of measles have made news.

An infected person who visited Disneyland in California a few years ago spread the disease to 100 people. In 2016, more than 62 people in 17 states contracted the disease, the majority of whom had not been vaccinated.

The hard truth is individuals who refuse to become vaccinated, and those who withhold the vaccine from their children, put themselves and others at risk of both the disease and its often-grave complications.

Measles, also known as rubeola, is closely related to the canine distemper virus. It’s a leading cause of death among children worldwide, with most victims younger than 5 years old. Measles is so contagious, 90 percent of the people close to an infected person who are not themselves immune also will become infected.

The virus spreads through contact with contaminated saliva or mucous. With a single sneeze, a person who has measles can disperse the virus to multiple surfaces,

Symptoms, which include high fever, cough and runny nose, appear one to two weeks after infection. These are followed in two or three days by white spots that appear inside the mouth. Within five days, a rash breaks out. At this point, fever spikes, often to more than 104 degrees F. About one-third of those who get the measles suffer from complications, which include diarrhea, severe ear infection and pneumonia. These are most common among children younger than 5 years old and adults older than 20, and make a case of measles particularly dangerous for these age groups.

And it’s not just contracting the virus itself that’s so perilous.

New research reveals the virus can spread to the brain. Once there, it may remain dormant for years. When it finally reappears, it is in the form of a progressive and debilitating brain disorder known as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, or SSPE. There is no cure, and the condition is often fatal.

As to your question of whether you should be vaccinated, that depends. If you’ve already been vaccinated or have had a case of measles in the past, the answer is no. But if you have neither had measles nor a previous vaccination, then the answer is yes. You should call your family physician as soon as possible and discuss how to move forward.

Producing the annual International Bridge Press Association awards is a team effort, but the winner of any given category is usually only one player.

This week, we have looked at the best defensive plays from last year. In most of them, a defender successfully ducked a trick that he could have won. This deal, which won the Gidwani Family Trust award for Dennis Bilde from Denmark, is another example, but one that perhaps only he would have found. Bilde was sitting East, defending against four spades doubled. What was his plan after West led the diamond four?

North’s double was snapdragon: length in diamonds (the unbid suit) and tolerance for partner’s suit. After that, no one was sure who could make what.

East knew the lead was a singleton. But he sensed that if he won with his ace and gave his partner a diamond ruff, South would have won the club shift on the board, crossed to his heart ace, picked up the trumps with the aid of a finesse and run the diamonds. So, East put in the diamond nine.

Declarer could have gotten home by taking the trump finesse, but he understandably chose to play a spade to the ace and another spade.

West won with his king and shifted to the club five, which was ducked to East’s queen. Now Bilde led the diamond 10, giving partner his ruff.

West then played his other club, and the defenders took one spade, one diamond, two clubs and the diamond ruff. Outstanding!
