LOS ANGELES – Michael Keaton has revealed the reason behind his departure from the “Batman” franchise after two films.

Keaton starred as the superhero in 1989’s “Batman” and 1992’s “Batman Returns.” Both of those films were directed by Tim Burton. Joel Schumacher was hired to direct 1995’s “Batman Forever,” and Keaton decided to pass on starring in that film.

Keaton said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast that the script for the film “never was good.”

He said he didn’t understand why Schumacher “wanted to do what he wanted to do” with the film, which was lighter in tone than the first two films.

Val Kilmer stepped in as the caped crusader.

Keaton currently is starring in “The Founder,” a biopic about fast-food pioneer Ray Kroc.

COPING WITH THE COLD Stray animals, pets face challenges in winter

DeKALB – Winter can be tough on humans, but the stakes are just as high for dogs and cats in DeKalb County.

Local shelters such as The Barn on Baseline in Genoa and TAILS Humane Society in DeKalb see more stray cats coming in this time of year, while DeKalb County Animal Control responds to calls of strays and pets exposed to the cold.

Roberta Shoaf, executive director of The Barn on Baseline, said concerns for the welfare of stray cats are heightened when cold weather hits.

However, many of the cats people bring in are outdoor or feral cats that are not used to human interaction.

“People want them in here where it’s warm, and that’s a good thing,” Shoaf said. “But often those cats are not social or handleable, and therefore not appropriate for a shelter environment.”

Shoaf said the best thing people can do if they think an animal needs help is to call Animal Control or local police who can intervene or pick up the animal if needed.

“Animal Control is the central unit in area that has all the information,” she said. “Steps need to be taken by people who know what those steps are.”

Strays picked up by Animal Control are impounded for a week and turned over to rescue groups or shelters if they are not claimed.

Michelle Groeper, executive director of TAILS, said she also advises people to call the proper authorities, and the shelter will take in strays as space is available.

“We see an uptick in strays coming in from Good Samaritans,” Groeper said. “A lot of times, they have been feeding the cat for a few months in the summer, then it gets cold and they want to help.”

While cats are more apt to hunt for food than most dogs, their access to water becomes limited when temperatures dip below freezing, Shoaf said.

“Feral cats have learned to take care of themselves, but they need water to survive,” she said.

Health Department, said the county has a higher population of stray cats than dogs, and even the cats sometimes struggle to find food during winter.

“Usually they wouldn’t have as much access to food,” Maurice said.

“People are feeding them less, and rodents are less accessible.”

Cats and dogs that don’t have access to shelter also can suffer physically from the extreme cold, he said.

Animal Warden Dan Berres said cats with diseases such as distemper

or feline immunodeficiency virus can have a harder time fighting them while their bodies are stressed with the cold.

He said Animal Control is mandated to pick up stray dogs, and they will pick up stray cats that are seriously sick or injured, such as cats with rabies.

Animal Control also does wellness checks when people report dogs that have been left outside or in the car in the extreme cold.

“Mainly, it’s people driving by

and seeing dogs outside,” Berres said. “Three-fourths of those calls are unfounded, but we do get a few that really need to be addressed. We go out on every call.”

Berres said people sometimes assume a dog has been left out all day, when in reality it has only been out for 15 minutes.

“We don’t have a big problem with that, but we do have to tell people who leave their dogs outside all the time to provide adequate shelter,” he said.

Having dogs live outside is not illegal as long as they have access to shelter from the elements, Berres said.

“They have to be able to get out of the rain or wind, and straw or a mat so they’re not right on the ground,” he said. “A good solid dog house usually meets the criteria.”

Berres said outside dogs develop undercoats to protect them from the weather, but having access to shelter still is important.

“A lot of huskies will lay right on the snow,” he said. “Even if they choose not to go in it, [owners] still need to provide that shelter.”

Groeper said people can do things to help their pets deal with winter, such as taking them on shorter walks, shoveling a path for them, using pet-friendly salt and putting down straw where they relieve themselves.

Pets that spend a lot of time outside during the winter need more food because keeping warm depletes energy. Pet owners also should be sure to routinely check their pet’s water dish to ensure water is fresh and unfrozen.

Use plastic food and water bowls because when the temperature is low, the animal’s tongue can stick and freeze to metal.

People also can put coats on dogs with shorter fur, and wipe their paws when they come inside or put boots on them if the dogs don’t mind, Groeper said.

Shoaf said she encourages people to continue thinking of shelter animals after the holiday season is over.

“We feed animals every day, 365 days a year,” she said. “At Christmastime people are more generous; January and February is sort of a lag time.”

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A former substitute teacher facing up to 60 years in prison after being accused of sexually abusing 12 students in a DeKalb School District 428 early childhood program has been sentenced to 13 years in prison as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.

Andrew J. Arison, 38, formerly of 1720 Maness Court, Sycamore, pleaded guilty to charges of predatory criminal sex- Andrew ual assault of a child, ag- J. Arison gravated criminal sexual abuse and possession of child pornography.

He had faced up to 60 years in prison, but under terms of an agreement with prosecutors, he was sentenced to a total of 13 years in exchange for a guilty plea.

With good behavior he could be released in a little more than 8½ years, and possibly sooner, depending on how the more than 21 months he already has spent in DeKalb County Jail is applied to his sentence.

He also will be required to register as a sex offender for life.

Arison was scheduled to meet with his attorney, prosecutors and Judge Robbin Stuckert for a conference Dec. 28, but the conference was called off when the plea deal was reached, DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch said.

McCulloch, who represented Arison, said his client made a statement to

the court saying he was sorry for what he had done.

None of the police officers involved or family members of the victims were in the courtroom when he was sentenced, McCulloch said.

Arison’s arrest in March 2015 shocked the community and left many parents feeling vulnerable.

All of the victims were in a program for 3- to 5-year-olds at the school district, and many of them couldn’t speak, a fact that made the case difficult to prosecute, said Holly Peifer, director of Children’s Advocacy Center.

The center conducts child-sensitive interviews with victims of abuse. The interviews are often used in court.

Peifer said that the case was different from others because the victims were nonverbal and wouldn’t have been able to testify.

She said the 13-year sentence “wasn’t enough by any means” but was understandable given the circumstances.

She said sex offenders not only groom the children they abuse, but “the entire community.” Children with disabilities are five times more likely to be abused than other children, she said.

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Rick Amato, who was elected in November after promising to be tough on crime, said prosecutors consulted with police officers and the families of victims regarding the sentence before reaching a deal.

D-428 board candidates remain on ballot after objection hearing

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Objections to the nominating petitions of two candidates for the DeKalb School District 428 Board were not enough to remove them from the ballot in April, a panel of county officials ruled Wednesday.

Jim Mitchell, a former board member who pleaded guilty to an attempted obstruction charge in 2012, filed objections to the petitions of former board President Tracy Williams and Jeromy Olson and presented his findings during a hearing at the DeKalb County Courthouse.

Mitchell sought to disqualify as many as 18 of the 55 signatures on Williams’ petition, which would have put Williams below the 50 or more signatures from registered voters within the school district needed for him to appear on the April 4 ballot.

Mitchell asserted that several signatures lacked valid addresses. Williams’ name also was not provided as a circulator in one of the signature

sheets, which Mitchell felt would disqualify all of the names.

DeKalb County Clerk Doug Johnson, who was part of the panel presiding over the hearing, said that the county elections office had confirmed the names and addresses for many of the signatures and considered them valid.

He added that the missing circulator’s name was a mistake by a notary and not Williams’ error, and approved all validated signatures.

Johnson agreed with only two of the invalid signatures proposed by Mitchell.

Mitchell only cited two mistakes on Olson’s petition.

The first came from a failure to initial changes made in the circulator section of the petition by Barb City Action Committee spokesperson Christie Krupp, who helped to circulate Olson’s petition.

Johnson said he could not find any case law to suggest a correction needed to be initialed on a petition and determined the signatures on the form

to be valid.

The second issue came from a second circulator, District 428 board member Mary Hess, who signed her name on the petition with Olson’s personal information already filled out.

Johnson said that this could be grounds to disqualify the signatures from that sheet. However, Olson already had collected enough names to remain eligible.

Johnson, Sarah Gallagher-Chaimi of the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office and Luan Olson of the DeKalb County circuit clerk’s office presided over the hearing and unanimously voted to keep both candidates on the ballot.

In addition to Williams and Olson, Shatoya Black, C. Scott (Clyde) Campbell, Twangie Smith, Sean Johnson, current board President Victoria Newport, Valerie Pena Hernandez, Catherine Harned and Jeff Hallgren also have filed to run for the three open positions on the District 428 board.

DeKALB – Recycling materials inside Waste Management’s DeKalb facility caught fire recently and caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to the building, according to a DeKalb Fire Department news release.

The department responded at 10:17 a.m. Saturday to a reported fire in the facility at 115 Simonds Ave. DeKalb Fire Chief Eric Hicks said the fire started in the recycling sorting area inside the building. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The fire was deeply seated in the recycling materials, which take up one-third of the building, according to the release.

“It’s a recycling center, so anything you can think of that’s recyclable is in

there, paper, cardboard,” Hicks said.

The building’s sprinklers were activated when firefighters arrived, but piles of the recycling materials had to be taken apart and wet down with a hose line for the fire to be extinguished, according to the release.

A special fan from Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division 8 was used to remove the dense smoke from the building.

Hicks said the department does not have to use the ventilation fans often, but they are available to departments around the state for warehouse-type fires in larger buildings.

The fire was under control within five hours, and no one was injured. Sycamore, Cortland, Malta, Hinckley, Maple Park, Waterman and Genoa-Kingston fire departments assisted.

The Sycamore and DeKalb fire departments both reported no emergency responses related to the holiday season for the duration of their “Red Wreath” programs.

Each year from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, the departments hang wreaths outside their fire stations and replace a red lightbulb with a white one each time they respond to a holiday-related emergency call.

The goal of the program is to promote awareness of fire safety during the holiday season, as things such as Christmas lights, combustible decorations, candles and space heaters all cause potential fire hazards during this time of year.

Sycamore Fire Chief Pete Polarek updated the City Council on the program Tuesday.

“It’s really business as usual

with the relatively mild weather we’ve been having,” he said.

“Weather hasn’t played a factor in our operations, but there’s a lot of sick people out there.”

The Sycamore Fire Department responded to 196 requests for emergency services while the red wreaths were displayed, including 152 for medical service, 17 for car crashes and 27 for nonholiday-related fires.

DeKalb Fire Chief Eric Hicks said the community has responded well to the “Red Wreath” program and the department’s promotion of fire safety.

“We put out messages throughout the year about how to handle live trees, and we touch on alcohol safety as well,” he said.

The DeKalb Fire Department during this time responded to 625 requests for emergency services, including 15 nonholiday-related fires.

8 Chicago police describe ‘sickening’ live-stream torture of Crystal Lake teen

nlinhart@shawmedia.com Four teens face felony charges after a video of a duct-taped teen from Crystal Lake being tortured in Chicago was streamed live on Facebook, police said.

“It’s sickening,” Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said. “It makes you wonder what would make individuals treat someone like that.”

The Streamwood Police Department said the 18-year-old victim in the video, who suffers from a mental health illness, is a high-risk missing person from Crystal Lake, although Crystal Lake police could not confirm that.

In the video, the victim is seen being beaten, getting his hair cut with a knife and having ashes from what appear to be cigarettes dumped on him. Throughout the video, the suspects made profane comments about Donald Trump and “white people,” and Chicago police said they are investigating the case as a possible hate crime. Chicago police said the alleged assault took place Tuesday in an apartment in the 3400 block of West Lexington on the West Side of Chicago. Officers found the victim wandering the neighborhood in a state of trauma. Authorities later drew the connection with the Facebook video,

according to Chicago police.

“They saw that the individual was in distress, and they cared enough to do something about it,” Chicago police Capt.

Steve Sesso said.

The officers learned that the individual they encountered in distress was reported missing from a suburban town, Chicago police said.

“So during the course of talking to this individual, who was in distress, they were able to determine the location ... ,” Sesso said.

Four teenagers – two men and two women – are in custody, and criminal charges are expected. Three of the suspects are from Chicago, and a fourth is from Carpentersville, Chicago police said. The victim was an acquaintance of one of the suspects, and they knew each other from school, but Chicago police said they are unsure how the other three subjects became involved.

The suspects stole a van and brought the victim to Chicago, where the victim is believed to have been with the suspects for 24 to 48 hours, police said.

“It’s quite a possibility this is a kidnapping,” Chicago police Cmdr. Kevin Duffin said. “And that’s certainly one of the charges we’ll be seeking if it turns out to be that.”

This Mr. Peanut figure is strange indeed when seen walking in a mall or show. It is a person dressed in a composition or fiberglass body with an attached top hat, monocle and the other parts of his wardrobe. It sold for $474 in 2015.

I have the red box it came in, but one of the edges of the glass has a small chip.

I’m wondering if there was there any notable value to the piece before the chip and if there might be any residual value despite the chip.

A: Peter Aldridge, a British designer and sculptor, designed this “Stars & Stripes” sculpture for Steuben. It’s part of a group of limited-edition pieces in modern shapes that are engraved or embellished with gold or silver pieces. Clocks were an important part of the Victorian home. Large grandfather clocks were kept in the front hall or living room to tell time, ring chimes on the hour and even tell the phases of the moon. The only public sources of time were the train station, city hall or church tower clocks.

Smaller clocks that told time were kept on the fireplace mantle and were made to be decorative with bronze figures as part of the case in formal homes, and plain or even comic cases in others. Almost all clocks had to be wound for up to eight days. Bradley & Hubbard, a Connecticut company that made many iron and other metal items, had an 1857 patent for a figural novelty clock that could blink its eyes. “Blinkers,” also called “winkers,” were made in many shapes. An organ grinder with a monkey, Topsey, Mammy, Sambo the Banjo Player and John Bull examples were sold in auctions during the last five years for prices from $500 to about $1,000. John Bull is a character who was a popular symbol of England from 1712 to the 1940s. New England Auctions sold a 16-inch John Bull blinking eye clock for $416 in 2016. *** Q: I have a coffee bin that was in my grandparents’ general store in the late 1800s or early 1900s. It’s marked “Dilworth’s Prime Grade Coffee.” The markings were made with a stencil. There is a shipping label on top, but I can’t read the date. Does it have any value?

A: Dilworth’s was in business in Pittsburgh during the late 1800s and early 1900s. John Dilworth was one of the founders of a wholesale grocery company, which operated under various names until 1881, when it became Dilworth Brothers Co. Collectors like early advertising items and if the lettering is in good condition, your bin has value. The shipping label is a plus. Limited-edition figurines and plates were popular in the 1970s and ‘80s, but are hard to sell today. Most sell for a few dollars online at sites like eBay. A: Some cut glass sells for high prices.

Many pieces sell for over $100 and a few sell for over $1,000. If it’s a large collection, an auction may be the best way to sell it. There are serious collectors and buyers who want just a few pieces because of early memories. Are your pieces signed? Perfect?

Police arrested Arison on March 12, 2015. A day earlier, one of his co-workers at the early childhood education program at Huntley Middle School had seen him having inappropriate contact with two students. She reported it to authorities the next day, and Arison was arrested while working at Southeast Elementary School in Sycamore.

In an interview with police after he was arrested, Arison admitted to having inappropriate contact with the child, police said at the time. Prosecutors later added more charges.

Police said the incidents for which Arison was charged took place between January 2013 and March 2015.

A search of Arison’s Sycamore

home uncovered several thousand images of child pornography, police said.

Arison worked as a substitute teacher and aide at schools throughout the area since he resigned as a teacher in Genoa-Kingston School District 424, where he taught elementary school from 2004 to ‘08. He had been registered as a substitute teacher for schools all over DeKalb County, as well as those in Boone and Winnebago counties.

Arison’s arrest shook the faith of many parents, especially those with students in the early childhood program. In the aftermath of the charges, about 70 parents of students in the District 428 early childhood program were called to a special meeting that left some in tears.

Arison was a well-liked substitute at the time of his arrest, school officials said. At the meeting with parents in 2015, then-Superintendent Doug Moeller said teachers trusted Arison and considered him an excellent substitute.

“There are literally dozens and dozens of our teachers who felt so comfortable with this person that they put them on the preference list,” Moeller said at the time.

PEORIA – A Peoria addiction treatment program is aiming to change the community, one man at a time.

The Peoria Teen Challenge Men’s Division is a faith-based 14-month residential addiction treatment program for men 18 and older. Since the opening in October of 2000, more than 1,200 men have walked through the doors at the building at 311 S. Olive St., searching for the opportunity of a life free from the burden of addiction.

At the Peoria facility, students undergo a four-month induction phase.

Upon completion, they are then transferred to another Teen Challenge facility either in Missouri or Pennsylvania for a 10-month training phase. Those who can’t leave the state for legal reasons are sent to Chicago, where a larger Teen Challenge building is also used for the induction phase and as a second phase program for those not allowed to leave Illinois to continue their treatment.

The Rev. Randy Atchley, executive director at Peoria Teen Challenge, said the induction phase is to start to develop the character and the foundation students will need to succeed at the training phase.

Calls to 911 were made before DuPage Co. deputy killed teen

VILLA PARK – Calls to 911 were made shortly before a 17-year-old boy was fatally shot while getting into an altercation with a sheriff’s deputy in suburban Chicago.

The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy responded Monday to a domestic incident near Villa Park and shot the teen. He was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to authorities, and identified by family as Trevon Johnson. The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave and hasn’t been identified.

One call from the home said he had a knife. A second call also described the scene, apparently including the shooting.

Chicago airport noise buffers costlier for historic homes

CHICAGO – Costs are soaring for Chicago city officials’ plan to insulate historic homes from airport noise.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the bill to install sound buffers around a test group of older homes near O’Hare International Airport is averaging $100,000 an address. That’s four times what the city pays on average for nonhistoric homes.

Insulation of homes using historic preservation standards could become the city’s most expensive in at least a decade.

The Teen Challenge of Peoria takes a one-time fee of $1,200 for the entire 14-month program. To supplement their income, students, through the Work Therapy program, work certain hours a week at two local not-for-profit businesses: Peoria Production Shop and The Community Workshop & Training Center.

Joe Rogers, director of operations at Peoria Teen Challenge, said no one can be recruited to participate in the Teen Challenge Program, and that the key to the treatment’s success lies in the desire of students to change.

“If they are here because mom or dad wanted them here, or if they are here for any other reason other than changing their life, that even makes it more difficult,” Rogers said. “If they are open to receiving the program and what the program has to offer, we see change take place.”

Fourteen men currently are undergoing the induction phase at the Peoria facility.

“We offer a service to help those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction,” Rogers said. “This is what we do for not just the community here in

Peoria, but for all the counties of the state. Our interest is not monetary, our interest is in actually changing lives, trying to help improve our community and just the people of our state.”

Atchley said that faith is the first and foremost key element of their success. The second is the length of time, and the third is the fact everyone working at the facility has graduated from the program themselves.

“Addiction doesn’t develop overnight,” Atchley said. “It takes time to progress to where it is, and it doesn’t go away overnight either. It takes time to deal with. And the fact that we all went through the program is a big deal.

Everybody that comes in now is being helped by somebody that has been there, and walked those shoes.”

Both Rogers and Atchley agreed that the biggest issues for the students seems to be the length of the treatment, and the “dropping of the pride” that comes while submitting to the program.

“When they hit the door, they have a lifetime of learning behavior,” Rogers said. “So when they come in, we’re asking them to surrender all that they know regarding that, and to embrace and start putting on an entire new thought process: a spiritual process and a change of heart and mind. That’s a difficult transition.”

Illinois man cleared in 1991 rape after 25 years in prison

WAUKEGAN – A northern Illinois man who spent 25 years in prison for a rape has been cleared of the charge by a Lake County judge.

William Carini was convicted in 1992 and sentenced to 26 years in prison in the sexual assault of a woman who was attacked after she fell asleep in her car on the shoulder of the Tri-State Tollway near Gurnee.

Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim announced in December forensic testing revealed none of the physical evidence collected in the rape case matched Carini.

On Tuesday, Nerheim appeared before Judge Daniel Shanes to argue the evidence testing results are, at a minimum, grounds for granting Carini a new trial.

However, Nerheim said he does not intend to retry Carini on the sexual assault charge.

Nerheim said Illinois State Police are expected to reopen the case.

Chicago alderman says he’ll challenge Rauner in 2018

CHICAGO – Chicago Alderman Ameya Pawar said he’s running to unseat Republican Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner in 2018.

The Democrat and second-term alderman said Wednesday he would provide “a progressive counter-balance to the governor’s agenda.”

Pawar said he would push for Illinois to impose an additional tax on incomes over $1 million.

He also wants to expand subsidized day care – a program Rauner cut amid Illinois’ budget crisis – and would decriminalize more drug offenses.

Illinois Republican Party spokesman Steven Jaffe called Pawar an “out-oftouch, tax-hiking politician,” noting he’s supported several Chicago tax increases.

Pawar starts with a massive fundraising disadvantage. His campaign account has about $50,000. Rauner just gave his own campaign $50 million.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Hardening battle lines for the brawl to come, President Barack Obama urged congressional Democrats to “look out for the American people” in defending his legacy health care overhaul, while Vice President-elect Mike Pence stood firm Wednesday in telling Republicans that dismantling “Obamacare” is No. 1 on Donald Trump’s list.

“We’re going to be in the promise-keeping business,” Pence declared at two separate Capitol news conferences. Only 16 days before Trump takes over the Oval Office, he said repealing and replacing Obama’s law will be the president-elect’s “first order of business.”

“The American people voted decisively for a better future for health care in this country, and we are determined to give them that,” Pence said.

Outnumbered in the new Congress, Democrats didn’t sound confident in stopping the Republicans cold but signaled they wouldn’t make the GOP’s job any easier.

New Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said that if the Republicans do scuttle the health care law, they will have to come up with a replacement plan before Democrats consider whether to help them revamp the system.

That adds pressure on Republicans, who for years have battled among themselves over what a new law would look like, including how to finance its programs and whether to keep Obama’s expansion of Medicaid for more lower-income people.

“They’re repealing, we’re not. It’s their obligation to come up with a replacement,” Schumer said, a sentiment he said he believed Democrats shared unanimously.

Even with White House and congressional control, annulling “Obamacare” and replacing it looms as a daunting task for the GOP. Leaders hope to have legislation voiding much of the law on Trump’s desk by late next month, Republicans said.

But after six years of failing to unite behind an alternative, GOP leaders are discussing postponing when repeal would take effect for 18 months or longer, allowing more time to craft replacement legislation.

Underscoring the law’s widespread constituency, the Obama administration said at least 8.8 million people signed up through Dec. 31 for coverage in 2017. Even so, outside experts doubt the administration will meet its nationwide target of 13.8 million signups.

Millions more have coverage under the statute’s Medicaid expansion.

Trump has provided few details about how he would redesign the law, but has said he wants to retain popular provisions such as ensuring coverage for people with pre-existing medical problems.

Senator Duckworth takes office Illinoisans got a new U.S. senator Tuesday.

That’s when Tammy Duckworth, 48, a Hoffman Estates Democrat, was sworn in to succeed one-term Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk.

Duckworth is a war hero who has overcome the loss of two legs from combat injuries in Iraq in 2004 to continue serving the public, first in an appointive governmental capacity, and later as a member of the U.S. House from suburban Chicago.

In fact, Duckworth was living in DeKalb, working for Rotary International and pursuing her Ph.D. at Northern Illinois University when her Illinois National Guard unit was called to service in 2003.

NIU awarded her an honorary doctoral degree in 2010, and she has owned a home in DeKalb. But she didn’t make a single public appearance in DeKalb County during the 2016 campaign. (Neither did Kirk.)

We encourage her to alleviate that deficiency by reaching out to her new constituents – and her former neighbors – by listening to them, and representing the needs of all Illinoisans, regardless of party or region, to the best of her ability.

The seat she now holds has turned over more frequently than the seat that longtime U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Springfield, holds.

In fact, Duckworth is the 10th person to hold it since 1951, when Everett M. Dirksen was first sworn in.

Upon Dirksen’s death in 1969, Ralph T. Smith was named to the Senate seat.

After Smith came Adlai E. Stevenson III (1970), Alan J. Dixon (1981), Carol Moseley Braun (1993), Peter Fitzgerald (1999), Barack Obama (2005), Roland Burris (2009) and Mark Kirk (2010).

By comparison, Durbin’s seat has had relatively little turnover; only four people – Paul Douglas, Charles Percy, Paul Simon and Durbin – have held it since 1949.

Now it’s Duckworth’s turn to represent Illinoisans to the best of her ability in the U.S. Senate.

We wish her good luck.

This was an ethics lesson for Donald Trump What happened this week among House Republicans carries a useful and important lesson.

The incoming GOP conference voted secretly to emasculate the independent House ethics watchdog, and when the action became public, a torrent of protests erupted. Even President-elect Donald Trump expressed doubt, and the lawmakers backed down. People expect their representatives to meet high ethical standards, no exceptions.

Rather quickly, House Republicans realized the folly of their secret vote to end the independence of the Office of Congressional Ethics, which has the power to probe malfeasance and has exposed numerous cases of impropriety.

The office does not sit in judgment, but its powers to investigate wrongdoing have proved valuable.

A good example was the report in May 2015 revealing that the stateowned oil company of Azerbaijan secretly funded an all-expens-

es-paid trip to a conference in Baku for 10 members of Congress and 32 staff members, who received hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of travel expenses, silk scarves, crystal tea sets and Azerbaijani rugs. It surely caused the members heartburn when the facts were disclosed, but the story was based on a 70-page report by the ethics office and performed a valuable public service.

As a new Congress begins, pressures on House members by vested interests are as great as they have ever been, and an independent watchdog serves as a bulwark against what otherwise might become unfettered influence-peddling.

Trump, champion of “drain the swamp” in Washington, expressed his concern in two tweets that said “weakening” the ethics watchdog was not the “number one act and priority” of Congress right now. He also called the ethics office “un-

fair”; his expressed doubts were about timing, not the substance of the vote. But Trump should take a cue from the events of the day and get serious about transparency and conflict of interest in his own affairs.

Trump has yet to disclose his tax returns despite promises. He has not provided sufficiently detailed disclosure of his far-flung commercial empire, including ties to Russia, if any. Nor has he yet told the American people how he intends to cut himself off from his business once he becomes president. He must try to sever these ties because he will soon be a public servant, working for more than 320 million Americans, not for his own gain.

Trump should not leave himself exposed. If he does, he will get mired in years of questions about conflict of interest, sapping his political capital and hurting his presidency.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Optimism on the future of retirement Retirees may be forgiven for indulging in nostalgia, but all too often our thinking about retirement falls prey to that vice.

Criticism of 401(k) plans is once again being voiced, and once again being read against the background assumption that in the good old days we had a better retirement system based on traditional defined-benefit pensions.

According to the critics, “the proliferation of 401(k) plans has exposed workers to big drops in the stock market and high fees from Wall Street money managers, while making it easier for companies to shed guaranteed retiree payouts.”

The alleged result is that a lot of Americans, maybe even most of them, are dangerously underprepared for their retirements. Some people want to scrap the 401(k) altogether.

As Megan McArdle of Bloomberg View notes, picking on 401(k)s obscures the major difficulty in funding retirement: Whatever type of plan is used, people have to restrain their consumption during their working years to be able to consume

But there’s also a positive story to be told. Whatever problems the U.S. pension system has, they are smaller than they ever were before.

For starters, our mix of 401(k)s, traditional pensions and Social Security is working relatively well for most current retirees.

Roughly three-quarters of them say they’re living comfortably – which is higher than the percentage of Americans of working age who say the same.

Using data from the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances, my American Enterprise Institute colleague Andrew Biggs calculates that senior households in 2013 had annual incomes 34 percent higher than such households in 1989. Younger households in 2013 showed much less improvement over their predecessors.

Saving among today’s workers keeps rising. In 1970, people in the middle 40 percent of the income distribution had 33 percent of their annual incomes saved in retirement plans, Biggs estimates.

Their equivalents today have 210 percent of their incomes socked away. And don’t assume young people are slacking off: Millennials are saving a higher proportion of their incomes in retirement plans than Generation X’ers did at the same age.

Criticism of 401(k)s frequently idealizes the defined-benefit plans they have largely replaced. It’s true that 401(k) participants have more responsibility for their retirements than defined-benefit plans involved, and they also are exposed to market risk. Andrew Samwick, a professor of economics at Dartmouth College, pointed out in an interview that defined-benefit plans had their own risks. The company sponsoring those plans could skimp on pension contributions, or allocate its investments poorly, or go bankrupt and leave plan participants short.

And the shift to 401(k)s has

coincided with a large increase in the number of people with retirement plans: Most workers didn’t have those defined-benefit pensions.

“People have a very distorted notion of how good things were under defined-benefit plans or how good they would be today if that system of defined-benefit plans had continued,” Samwick said.

None of this means that 401(k)s couldn’t be better, or that public policy concerning retirement couldn’t improve. But the improvements we should be considering would expand 401(k)-style plans to people who don’t have access to them.

We could, for example, make it possible for small businesses to join together to offer their employees such plans. Our system, that is, has real strengths, and we should build on them rather than abandon it.

House Republicans start 2017 on the wrong foot

Did the House Republicans already suffer their first defeat of 2017? Or is their retreat only tactical and temporary?

After voting Monday night to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics – with no advance warning – they backed off the decision Tuesday.

The office is the independent body established by a new Democratic majority in 2008 in response to multiple scandals in the Republican-majority House.

From Monday night to Tuesday noon, there was a media and Twitter firestorm, including tweets from President-elect Donald Trump, who opposed the timing of the scuttling of the ethics office, but not the substance of it.

For some perspective, let’s step back and ask: Why should the House have any ethics oversight at all, let

alone an independent role? After all, the voters can punish members who disgrace themselves. House members have to run every two years (compared with six years for the Senate).

Plenty of politicians who get into trouble have chosen to resign rather than wait for the voters’ verdict, while many others have simply chosen not to run for re-election.

And for those whose scandals include breaking the law, separation-of-powers concerns haven’t prevented prosecutions.

Given all of those options, a separate internal ethics process isn’t really essential for protecting the nation from miscreants. Instead, it’s about protecting the reputation of the House – in particular, members of the majority party – from being tarred by the scandals tainting some of their colleagues.

It’s inevitable that at least a few of the 435 members of the House will get in trouble. After all, there is little se-

rious vetting in most House elections.

At best, local parties and the national party legislative committees can try to sink the campaign of a known ne’er-do-well. But news coverage and even opposition research (and the spending to back it up) are minimal in many House elections, and a party’s ability to gather information is limited.

Given this, it makes sense for the House to institute an ethics process serious enough so that when something goes wrong, the leadership – that is, the majority party – can claim to have dealt with it openly and forthrightly.

House Republicans learned this lesson the hard way in 2006, when a series of stories about mismanagement and corruption extended to Republicans as a whole.

By moving to weaken ethics procedures, Republicans produced a short-term public-relations mess on the opening day of the new Congress.

Even worse, had they gone through with their plan (and they still might), they would have guaranteed that any misbehavior uncovered on any of their members would have been seen as the fault of the entire party, rather as an aberration.

The party seems incapable of heeding clear incentives and warning signs.

Either the members believe themselves to be invulnerable to punishment by the electorate, or they are too incompetent to see the predictable results of their actions.

If House Republicans are that far removed from understanding the consequences of what they do, they’re going to botch a lot more than just ethics.

Near-upset of Kaneland gives Barbs a boost

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – All that stood between the DeKalb girls basketball team and an upset of Kaneland was one bounce.

Although the ball caromed the wrong way for the Barbs, taking a team such as the Knights (13-2 overall, 5-1 conference) to the limit last week has instilled confidence to the Barbs as they head into the second half of the season.

On Tuesday, DeKalb (4-13, 1-6) picked up a 39-33 win at Sterling.

“We came into Sterling thinking if we competed with Kaneland, we can definitely compete with Sterling,” said Jacki Rapp, DeKalb’s leading scorer who is averaging 11.5 points and 4.7 rebounds a game.

The Warriors (3-15, 0-4) made the game close late, forcing a turnover in between a pair of baskets to cut the DeKalb lead to 34-33 with 38.6 seconds left. But Rapp found Raquel Mills with an inbounds pass for a three-point play with 34.4 seconds left to seal the win.

Mills finished with 16 points – 11 in the fourth quarter – while Rapp had nine points and six rebounds. Firstyear coach Elliot Whitefield said when players other than Rapp score, the Barbs are in good shape.

“It’s been for a while, you know, Jacki,” Whitefield said. “She’s had to do all our ballhandling, or put her on the other team’s best offensive player.

For us to compete in games, she’d have to score 18, 19 points. Now, we’re getting contributions from a lot of players.

Rocky (Mills) is one of our best players, but she hasn’t been scoring lately.

She put together a nice game. Charlese Williams against Kaneland, I think she had 10 points. Even our freshmen, Haley Westberg and Ashley Nelson, they’re contributing. ... For the first time in more than a decade, the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team left Bowling Green with a victory, leading wire-to-wire in an 89-76 win over the Falcons on Wednesday night.

It’s the first NIU win in Bowling Green since 2004 and coming into the game, the Huskies (9-4 overall, 2-0 in MAC West) had lost 14 of their past 15 meetings against the Falcons.

The Huskies also have won their first two conference games for the first time since that 2004-05 season.

NIU was again led Wednesday by senior guard Ally Lehman, who had 18 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists

and went 10 for 12 from the free-throw line. She was one of five players in double figures, along with freshman Janae Poisson (17 points), sophomore Courtney Woods (16 points, five rebounds), senior Cassidy Glenn (12 points, six rebounds) and junior Kelly Smith (11 points, seven rebounds). Sophomore guard Mikayla Voigt had seven points and six assists for the Huskies.

The Huskies also shot 20 for 25 from the free-throw line.

Sycamore goes 1-2 at home quad: The Spartans beat United Township, 37-32, but lost 47-27 to Morton and 41-36 to Rockford East.

The Spartans had a shot against Rockford East, but lost the last three matches – two on falls and the final one on a decision. The Spartans benefited from five forfeits.

Two Sycamore wrestlers were perfect on the day – Matthew Hunter at 182 and Joey Beaudoin at 220. Hunter won a pair of decisions and won by a forfeit, while Beaudoin had two pins and a major decision.

Although there was one almost costly turnover late against Sterling, Whitefield said his team is learning the importance of taking care of the ball, something that cost the Barbs in the 51-50 loss to Kaneland.

“They executed down the stretch and defensively, we did a good job, so it seemed like they were more focused down the stretch as opposed to just playing,” Whitefield said. “I thought the girls did a nice job defensively, and I think they scored like six points in the fourth quarter.”

Against the Knights, DeKalb led most of the game and lost only when Jenni Weber made a 3-pointer with less than three seconds left on a shot that bounced high off the rim and dropped back through the net.

Rapp scored 21 in the loss to Kaneland, and Whitefield said he’s been impressed with what he’s seen out of the junior this season.

Shanahan leads coach candidate list THE WAY WE HEAR IT

WHO ARE THE TOP NFL HEAD COACH PROSPECTS? In the immediate aftermath of the final day of the regular season, it is difficult to sort out who the hottest head-coaching candidates are around the NFL because the bulk of the most successful assistants are still working in the playoffs.

Some of the top prospects including Kyle Shanahan (Atlanta), Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia (New England) and Dave Toub (Kansas City) are currently hop-scotching around the country getting in as many interviews as they can with their clubs on byes this week, but they will be expected to be back hard at work with their current teams on Monday to get ready for the divisional playoffs.

But while Shanahan is reported to be talking to the Broncos, Jaguars, Rams and 49ers; McDaniels has interviews with the Jaguars, Rams and 49ers; Patricia will meet with the Rams and Chargers; and Toub is on the list for the Broncos and 49ers, it would be highly unusual for one of them to actually accept a job before completing their work with their current club, and they become unavailable for second interviews as long as they keep winning in the playoffs.

Then there is the group that includes Vance Joseph of the Dolphins, who’s reported to be set to interview with the Broncos and Chargers; the Lions’ Teryl Austin and Jim Bob Cooter; Pittsburgh’s Todd Haley; Oakland’s Bill Musgrave; and Seattle’s Darrell Bevell, who are all thought to be top head coach prospects but haven’t been able to talk with the six clubs with vacancies yet because they are focused on their current clubs’ wild-card games this weekend.

Visit FanDuel. com/PFW sibilities including Harold Goodwin (Cardinals), who is meeting with the Bills, Jaguars and Rams; Sean McDermott (Panthers), who’s set to interview with the Bills; Steve Wilks (Panthers) is interviewing with the Rams; Mike Smith (Bucs) is interviewing with the Jaguars; and Sean McVay (Washington) is interviewing with the Rams, all with a serious head start on playoff assistants as they are free to devote all their energies to securing one of the open jobs.

McDermott is a classic example of one of the biggest hurdles all of these top assistants face, as he was a red-hot candidate last year after the masterful job he did coordinating the Panthers defense, but while he was busy working through the Super Bowl, all of the open jobs filled with coaches whose clubs were out of the playoffs.

More often than not, teams are in a hurry to fill their vacancies and are rarely willing to wait until after the Super Bowl.

The Way We Hear It, Tom Coughlin is still the frontrunner for the Buffalo job, but there are no high-profile college coaches likely to make the leap to the NFL this season, and recently canned Rex Ryan, Gus Bradley, Jeff Fisher, Chip Kelly and Mike McCoy are highly unlikely to be candidates for the other five openings.

We believe those jobs will be filled from the list of candidates presented above.

plumb of the list of openings, there are reports around the league that John Elway may not be the easiest boss for a head coach to work for, plus it is unclear whether or not the quarterback of the future is currently on the roster and the offensive line needs to be rebuilt.

That said, it’s not exactly a news flash that Elway won two Super Bowls and earned a spot in Canton playing for Shanahan’s dad, although it is unclear whether or not Elway

and or Shanahan will view that as an asset or liability.

The Rams’ job could be equally attractive to Shanahan depending on whether owner Stan Kroenke deems him to be high profile enough to fill what he is selling as one of the top “celebrity coaching openings,” and whether or not Shanahan believes Jared Goff was worth the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft.

There would be far less pressure on Shanahan to win immediately in Los Angeles, even though he would start on Day One with some of the best defensive talent in the NFL and a running back in Todd Gurley with All-Pro, build-an-offense-around-him potential.

We can’t rule out the Jaguars or 49ers, either, but according to our sources, Shanahan is the surest thing among the top coordinator candidates to get a job this year.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

This game is continuing a time-honored tradition of the Saturday, AFC wild-card game being the least desirable of the four weekend games, with neither team appearing to be a threat to the top seeds. It’s a game of questionable quarterbacks. Brock Osweiler regains his starting spot because of Tom Savage’s concussion. Matt McGloin had been the option for the Raiders, but his injury in Week 17 has opened the door for rookie Connor Cook to make his first NFL start. Derek Carr’s injury marred what had been one of the NFL’s best stories in Oakland, but the Raiders still have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. The Texans, sans J.J. Watt, still boasted the league’s best defense, which it needed to help lift the 29thranked offense, thanks in large part to Osweiler’s struggles, into the playoffs.

DOLPHINS VS. STEELERS

Sunday, 12:05 p.m. CT, CBS, Heinz Field OVERVIEW

The Texans’ best chance to get the offense going will be with Lamar Miller. The good free-agent acquisition quietly posted 1,073 rushing yards this season. That total would have been higher, but Miller missed the final two games of the season with an ankle injury. He’s expected to return against a Raiders defense that gave up 4.47 yards per carry this season, the eighth-highest rate in the NFL. In Week 11 at Estadio Azteca, Miller had 104 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown. Linebacker Malcolm Smith is the Raiders’ tackles leader, but the edge players will need to be key to prevent Miller from getting to the open field. He has the speed to take any run for a long gain on one cut. The Raiders gave up five carries of 40 yards or more, the second-most in the NFL.

It’s the surprise team in the AFC playoffs against a staple in the conference’s postseason. An eight-year playoff drought ended for one, while the other has been .500 or above for 13 consecutive seasons. The Dolphins had been written off following a 1-4 start, with their only win coming in overtime against the Browns. New head coach Adam Gase righted the ship, though, thanks in large part to breakout running back Jay Ajayi, an efficient passing attack and Cameron Wake’s strong season. The Dolphins rattled off six in a row and won nine of their next 10 to make the playoffs for the first time since 2008. The Steelers might be the most dangerous AFC team playing on wild-card weekend. The AFC North champs enter the playoffs having won their final seven games with one of the league’s most high-powered offenses.

These teams met in Week 6, when the

Dolphins began their win streak with a 30-15 victory at home. Ajayi ran for 204 yards in the victory.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

Ben Roethlisberger engineers the league’s fifth-best passing attack. It helps to have dual-threat back Le’Veon Bell, lethal wideout Antonio Brown and a pretty good offensive line – not to mention the two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback. Pittsburgh, for all its passes, allowed sacks on only 3.52 percent of those throws, the second-best rate in the NFL. On the other side of the ball, the Dolphins are strong up front, but young and banged up in the secondary. Cameron Wake (11.5 sacks, 24 QB hits), Ndamukong Suh (five sacks, 17 QB hits) and Andre Branch (5.5 sacks, 12 QB hits) will have to find a way to get past the Steelers’ O-line, but bringing down Roethlisberger is easier said than done.

Miami sacked him twice and hit Roethlisberger six times in their Week 6 win.

LIONS VS. SEAHAWKS

Saturday, 7:15 p.m. CT, FOX, CenturyLink Field OVERVIEW

The goal of every NFL club is to arrive at the postseason playing their best football; Seattle and Detroit will have to settle for the former part of the equation.

The Lions went from a potential firstround bye entering Week 14 to losers of three consecutive games and forced to make the vaunted visit to the “Clink.”

Matthew Stafford went from MVP candidate with an 8-4 mark and 21 touchdowns with just five picks to 1-3 with a dislocated middle finger, three TDs and five INTs. The Seahawks went 3-3 in their final six games, struggling to adjust to the loss of Earl Thomas, whose Week 13 broken leg preceded the defense surrendering an average of 25 points per game – up nearly 10 over the first 12 outings.

Seattle was 7-3-1 with Thomas and 2-2 without him. Nonetheless, Pete Carroll’s club captured its fourth NFC West crown and the right to host a home playoff

game. The Seahawks have great luxuries in a Super Bowl-winning quarterback and elite front-seven, not to mention the rowdy backing of the “12’s.”

MATCHUP TO WATCH

It probably won’t be another defensive struggle similar to Seattle’s 13-10 Monday-night triumph in Week 4 last season. Since Week 1, the Seahawks haven’t been below 24 points at home, where they’re 7-1 and 48-13 overall under Carroll. Moreover, Detroit lacks the pass rush to attack Wilson’s leaky front wall – though Ezekiel Ansah and Kerry Hyder storming Wilson’s blind side might be the Lions’ best shot at an upset. They’ll also need far better play at the nickel, where Adairus Barnes was elevated this week from the practice squad and could be thrown into the fire against one of Seattle’s top wideouts and one of the game’s best slot machines, Doug Baldwin. Aaron Rodgers relentlessly attacked the slot and Asa Jackson, then safety Don Carey after Jackson went down, Sunday night.

GIANTS VS. PACKERS Sunday, 3:40 p.m. CT, FOX, Lambeau Field OVERVIEW

A wild-card weekend that opened with two quarterbacks making their playoff debuts culminates in a QB pairing with 25 combined postseason starts and three Super Bowl rings. Both of Eli Manning’s Giants world championships (2007 and 2011) included upset victories at Lambeau along the way. Yet, unlike Aaron Rodgers’ Packers, appearing in an NFL-high eighth consecutive postseason, the G-Men haven’t been to the playoffs since their Super Bowl XLVI victory.

The Packers limited the Giants to a season-low 221 yards in their Week 5 2316 win, including just 56 for Odell Beckham Jr. Jordy Nelson was also contained that day, by Pro Bowler Janoris Jenkins, and New York’s great CB depth means it has a clearer plan for Nelson, Davante Adams and Rodgers’ targets than Green Bay does for Manning’s. The Packers in Week 17 lost three corners – Damarious Randall (knee), Quinten Rollins (neck) and Makinton Dorleant (knee). That left Ladarius Gunter, their best corner in 2016, outside opposite Micah Hyde, who began the night at nickel, with strong safety Morgan Burnett relegated to the slot. It’ll take a collective effort and creative game plan from Dom Capers to contend with Beckham, Sterling Shepard and Victor Cruz.

Pace, Fox give no reason to believe they can fix offense

LAKE FOREST – Bears Nation clearly has more than its share of questions and complaints about the 2016 Bears and what is next for “the Beloved.” Three specific concerns rise above the others.

First, what are they going to do about the BEARS quarterback INSIDER position?

There Hub was no way Arkush the people in charge could have answers 72 hours after the final game, so I had no expectations of enlightenment when general manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox held their season-ending news conference Wednesday.

No. 2, however, is: although it was obvious to everyone who ever has watched a football game, the Bears’ greatest assets are rookie running back Jordan Howard and their ground game, and the team and offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains chose to ignore it most of the season, begging the questions, why, and is Loggains the right guy to run the offense?

Fox made it clear he intends to retain Loggains – although he did not rule out adding to his offensive staff – so I asked him this question: “When Adam (Gase) left last year, you described the offense as your offense. Only six teams in the league ran the ball less than you, and until two weeks ago only two teams had. Is that how your offense is supposed to work, and if not, how do you fix it?”

Fox’s answer was, “I think situational football – you know the situation of games, I think, adjust that. If you look at, we were top six in yards per carry, all right so, we were 17th in the league in yards.

“I think when you’re behind like in as many games as we were, too many games, I think that affects that.

Just like in turnovers or takeaways, I think affects that.

“But I think we’re very efficient running the ball. So our struggles weren’t running the ball.”

Because Fox clearly didn’t answer my question, I tried following it up with this; “No they weren’t, and that’s the point of the question. Is [the lack of runs] the reason you were behind in as many games as you were?”

There’s no doubt that ball security is critical. Inconsistency at quarterback is part of that, it’s not an excuse; it’s reality.

“You know we went in the regular season with three different starting quarterbacks, you know not starting the preseason. So, that’s an area that we need to get more consistent at and, that’s going to be a big part of moving forward and having success moving forward.”

Fox never did answer either question but does appear to acknowledge they have to do better. However, he gave no indication as to how and/or

why it will improve under Loggains, and at other points in the news conference he insisted play-calling wasn’t an issue. Having struck out on an answer to No. 2, I moved to the last of the big three, asking Pace: “We were told when you and John got here that you had complete control of the football operation, including the hiring and firing of the head coach, and that John as the head coach has control of the staff.

“Is that the case, and if so, are you satisfied with John’s staff?”

Pace responded, “I’m comfortable with that, and you’re correct, that is how it is set up, and so, obviously, John and I have a tight, close relationship and we talk about staff all the time, and it’s not just the coaching staff, it’s all the department heads in football ops. But I’m confident in this coaching staff. I am.

“Of course, every year, win or lose, there’s some changes with position coaches and even some scouts, and I think it happens, but I’m confident in this staff going forward.”

Can we be confident that Pace has the unfettered authority to do whatever he has to to get this fixed?

Yes, I think we can.

Can we feel comfortable these guys understand and have what it takes to fix this offense?

Unfortunately, we weren’t given much reason Wednesday to believe we can.

CLEVELAND – Jimmy Butler scored 10 straight points during a critical stretch in the fourth quarter, leading the Bulls to a 106-94 win Wednesday night over the Cleveland Cavaliers, who had a less-than-100 percent LeBron James and were without stars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love.

Butler, who was coming off a 52-point game against Charlotte, scored 14 of his 20 points in the fourth as the Bulls held off Cleveland’s comeback.

Doug McDermott added 17 points for the Bulls, who made a season-high 13 3-pointers.

James, who has been battling a cold for several days, was questionable until about 20 minutes before the game, when the Cavs announced he would be the one – and only – member of Cleveland’s “Big 3” in uniform. He finished with 31 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in 37 minutes.

James was forced to go it alone as Irving missed his third straight game with a hamstring issue that appears to be more serious than first diagnosed, and Love still is recovering from a nasty case of food poisoning.

The Bulls made just 1 of 8 3-pointers in the first quarter before finding their range. They dropped 11 of their next 14 and built a 15-point lead when James went to the bench with 3:30 left in the third quarter.

But Cleveland’s reserves cut the Bulls’ lead to four when James returned with 8:49 remaining. He made two straight layups to pull the Cavs within 89-88 and was driving for the go-ahead bucket when Butler stepped in front of him in the lane and drew a charge.

Butler then hit a 3-pointer on the next possession, and Cleveland never got closer than eight and had their home winning streak ended at nine.

McDermott scored 15 points on 6-of-6 shooting in the second quarter, when the Bulls made 7 of 9 3-pointers and outscored the Cavs by 13.

Inspiring and intriguing ‘Hidden Figures’ explores NASA’s untold history with nerve, vivacity

It’s a fact of movie life that, during the holiday season, tears will be shed. No sooner had viewers dried and fluffed their hankies after seeing “Moonlight” and “Manchester by the Sea” than they were awash again during “Loving” and “Lion.” Even “La La Land,” Damien Chazelle’s affectionate ode to song-and-dance musicals, tempers the celebration with a generous helping of heartache.

After a brief prologue, when we meet Katherine Johnson as a teenage math prodigy, the film catches up with her in 1961, when she’s a young widow working at NASA’s Langley facility in Hampton, Virginia, as a “computer,” sharing a ride to work with her colleagues Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson.

The fact that these gifted women are played by the equally gifted Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe, respectively, says all you need to know about a movie propelled by their alternately salty and affecting performances. Far from a dry scientific tutorial or historical treatise, “Hidden Figures” is a warm, lively, often funny depiction of women whose brains and work ethics were indefatigable, even in the face of racism and sexism at their most oppressive.

Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) are three brilliant women working at NASA in “Hidden Figures.” height of the space race in the early 1960s, when the Soviets are winning the competition to get a manned mission into orbit, and when the pressure is on to get astronaut John Glenn (Glen Powell) and his colleagues in the Mercury program into their own supercharged tin cans. Although NASA is strictly segregated, with the African-American mathematicians occupying their own office, Katherine is the most gifted computer on the site. She’s sent to work with Al Harrison Kevin (Kevin Costner), who’s Costner annoyed when she disappears frequently throughout the day, but is impressed by her impeccable results.

It turns out she’s running a mile and a half to use the “colored only” bathroom, a sequence played for both laughs and wincing disbelief in “Hidden Figures.” Just as family and marriage pointed up the pathology

of racism in “Loving,” this movie adroitly portrays the sheer waste and inefficiency of racism and misogyny.

Just think how much has been lost, the movie suggests, over centuries of depriving ourselves of the brains, talents and leadership of more than half our population?

Those ideas weave their way gracefully through “Hidden Figures,” which centers mostly on Katherine (including her courtship with a handsome Army colonel named James Johnson, played by Mahershala Ali), but includes vividly effective scenes of Dorothy teaching herself to program a new piece of technology called the IBM, and Mary pursuing her engineering degree at a local all-white high school.

Some of the film’s most stirring scenes feature the hackneyed conceit of clueless white folk being enlightened by their African-American educators, but Henson, Spencer and Monáe give them grit and knowing gravitas.

If characters played by Jim Parsons and Kirsten Dunst sometimes seem

too cruel to be true, they feature in some of the film’s most bluntly effective scenes. Costner is ideally suited to play the rumpled, constantly eating Harrison, portrayed here as a man too focused and distracted to have time for petty prejudices.

“Hidden Figures” is pure pleasure to watch, with Melfi having as much fun with gorgeous period costumes and interior elements as with ratcheting up the tension as Glenn’s takeoff approaches. (It’s Katherine’s breathtakingly precise calculations that allow him to launch and land safely.)

Viewers old enough to remember how that voyage went will find it infused with new suspense and energy this time around; those who don’t are in for an unforgettable ride.

With Glenn’s recent passing, “Hidden Figures” has taken on even more poignancy and timeliness. It’s difficult to imagine a more stirring way to honor his memory, as well as the courage and vision of the extraordinary women who helped him to soar.

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Charlie Haley and The Band will perform from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 14 at EvenFlow Music & Spirits, 302 W. State St., Geneva.

“We do classic rock covers, and we have a blues rock feel,” said Haley, 39, of Waterman. “We also do original work. We have some songs that have done well on YouTube. We have two albums – ‘Soul Searching’ and ‘Today’ – on Band Camp, another site for artists to sell music.”

Haley plays guitar and provides lead vocals for the four-member band. Scot Bishop of Sycamore is the

‘Giselle’ ballet this weekend in DeKalb Dance Dimensions Youth Ballet will perform “Giselle” at 6:30 p.m.

“We’ve been playing about three years,” Haley said. “We all have day jobs, but the bass player goes to school full time. I work at 3M as a warehouse operator.”

The cover charge is $5. It will be the band’s first appearance at EvenFlow, Haley said.

“We are new and opening up for a second band, playing 10 to 12 songs,” Haley said. “I hope people come out and see us.”

CCT’s Stage Right Theatre will present “Godspell” this weekend at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb.

The musical was written by Stephen Schwartz, the Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer of “Wicked.”

This timeless tale of friendship, loyalty and love has touched the hearts of countless theatergoers all over the world. When this rock opera was first produced on Broadway in 1971, it broke new ground in its stage treatment of the historical Jesus Christ. Based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, it deals with the last days of Jesus, and includes dramatized versions of several well-known parables.

The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra invites community members to its live Arthur D. Montzka Young Artists Concerto Competition on Saturday.

NIU annuitants headed to Cubs game

NEW YORK – Drake leads the nominations for the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards with 12, including male artist of the year, while electronic duo The Chainsmokers has 11 nominations, including song of the year for “Closer” with Halsey. iHeartMedia and Turner announced the nominees Wednesday. It was also announced

that Bruno Mars will perform at the fourth annual awards show, set for March 5 in Los Angeles and televised on TBS, TNT and truTV, and simulcast on iHeartMedia stations.

This year’s show has been expanded to more than 30 categories. Other multiple nominees include twenty one pilots, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Beyonce, Daya, Halsey, Nicky Jam and Sia. Tickets go on sale Friday.

“Don’t Hug Me” takes place in Bunyan Bay, Minnesota.

Cantankerous bar owner Gunner Johnson wants to sell the business and move to Florida. Clara, his wife and a former Winter Carnival Bunyan Queen, wants to stay. Bernice Lundstrom, the pretty waitress, wants to pursue a singing career. Her fiancé, Kanute Gunderson, wants her to stay home. It’s a battle of wills, and when a fast-talking salesman, Aarvid Gisselsen, promises to bring romance into their lives through the “magic” of karaoke, all heck breaks loose.

The musical comedy features the songs, “I’m a Walleye Woman in a Crappie Town,” “My Smorgasbord of Love,” “Upside Down in My Pickup Truck,” and “I Wanna Go to the Mall of America.”

Performances of “Don’t Hug Me” will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24 and 25 and 2 p.m. Feb. 26 at the historic Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich.

Tickets cost $15 each and can be purchased online, at the Sandwich Opera House or at the door.

30 Smartphone use at bedtime hinders sleep Dear Doctors: I sent my mom an email at midnight, and ever since then she’s been after me to stop using my smartphone at bedtime. She insists the light from the screen interferes with sleep. Is that really true?

Dear Reader: Your mother is right. The ways in which the “blue light” emitted by smartphones, tablets and computer screens affects sleep patterns is a hot topic in scientific circles. And according to the scores of studies done in recent years, the answer consistently is the same: Yes, these devices do have a negative effect on your nightly rest.

This is troubling because insufficient sleep is associated with serious conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary heart disease, depression and even obesity. About one-third of all Americans don’t get the seven hours of sleep that are recommended to maintain good mental and physical health. In fact, the sleep deficit in the United States is so severe the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now identify it as a public health problem.

So how do the multiple screens in our lives figure into the epidemic of insufficient sleep?

Light is the cue your brain relies on to sync itself with the outside world. It regulates your circadian rhythms, which influence sleep patterns, hormone releases, body temperature and other vital functions.

Smartphones, tablets and computers all emit high-energy light in the blue spectrum.

This particular wavelength, which is similar to sunlight, has been shown to suppress the release of melatonin, a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain that makes you feel sleepy.

When you use your smartphone at night, even up to 90 minutes before you go to sleep, you’re confusing your body clock. The blue light from the screen is telling your brain it’s still daytime. That suppresses the release of

Once you do drift off, the disruption to your circadian rhythm is profound enough that it’s difficult to stay asleep. What sleep you do manage to get often is of poor quality.

Instead of feeling refreshed when you wake up, you face the day tired.

Some smartphone makers have introduced an option to move the self-illuminated screen from bright blue to a warmer yellow/ red spectrum, as with Apple’s “Night Shift.”

And while this may a have modest effect on sleep, we recommend putting your phone away at bedtime is a better idea.

To give yourself the best chance at a good night’s sleep: • Read from a printed book rather than an illuminated screen.

• Make your bedroom as dark as possible.

Use curtains to block exterior light, and eliminate inside light from clock dials, TV sets and, yes, smartphones.

• Do what you can to block out sound – earplugs or a white noise machine can help.

• Keep your bedroom cool; 65 to 68 degrees is ideal.

• Steer clear of large meals before bedtime.

• Be aware caffeine and alcohol can interfere with sleep.

Remember – how you feel during the day has a lot to do with how well you slept the night before.

family member keeps setting up fundraisers every time she wants to buy something for her family. If a child needs a special class, she asks the relatives to pitch in to pay for it. When her husband wanted to return to college, she brought all the extended family together to see who could contribute.

She now has set up a fundraiser to raise $6,000 to send her teenaged daughter to an expensive performing arts camp. I think if they can’t afford it, they should select a camp they can afford or have the 16-year-old go out and earn the money. I also think they should be saving for college rather than camp.

This woman’s father was a preacher, and sometimes I think she never got the message fundraising usually is for charity, not for those who happen to need some cash. Am I wrong to be embarrassed by what she’s doing, or is this a new normal? – Embarrassed In Texas Dear Embarrassed: You say your relative is the daughter of a preacher. There is a saying in the Bible, “Seek and ye shall find.” Another way of putting it is, “It never hurts to ask.” If you feel your relative is using others for something that should be her responsibility, you are free to just say no, and to do so without embarrassment.

Dear Abby: I’m retired and have the time to sew and quilt projects, which I give as gifts. I presented a “Quilt of Valor” to my father to honor his military service. I also gave a sibling one of my personalized projects as a birthday gift.

When we visited their home, I was horrified to see one of their dogs sleeping on the pillow I had made for them. When the dog woke up, it scratched itself and dragged the hair-covered pillow through the house. I have been asked to make a quilt for a disabled child living at home who has a dog that sleeps on her bed.

I no longer want to invest my time and energy after what happened to my gift.
