Many wish ‘fake news’ was true POLL YESTERDAY’S

“Tim Allen is moving to Sycamore!”

My 11- and 9-year-old daughters were pretty excited to tell me about this, even though it was the first time I think they’d ever spoken of the actor, who they identified as having been in the 2004 film “Christmas with the Kranks,” a movie that, to my knowledge, they’ve never seen.

So I asked them where they’d heard about the star of TV’s “Home Improvement” (a show they’ve also never seen.)

“It’s on the internet,” the eldest said.

“They wrote about it.”

“Who’s ‘they?’ ” I asked.

“The news.”

I asked them to show me this “news.” It took awhile for them to find it, but then they did. It was something called “News Daily 12.”

The story featured a blurry, washed-out image of Allen, beneath the headline “Tim Allen is moving to Sycamore, Illinois.”

The site includes a “disclaimer” heading.

If you click on it, it tells you “newsdaily12. com is an entertainment website composed mostly of articles containing fantasy news or satire.”

Actually, it’s a website composed mostly of paid links about erectile dysfunction, fattened-up celebrities, and some guy’s secret to winning the lottery 16 times. They write made-up, unfunny click-bait stories to trick you onto their site.

I then showed the girls Daily-Chronicle. com, the news organization their father works for. I pointed out the differences: There’s no “disclaimer.” The stories and photographs look different, and they’re not all about celebrities and “one strange trick.”

The reporters and photographers put their names on their work and provide contact information where they can be reached.

I explained all the reasons the Allen story was fiction. Celebrities don’t just announce that they’re moving to small towns.

Allen has no connection to Illinois and has probably never heard of Sycamore. There was only one website that had this story, and it by its own admission the site makes stuff up.

“Tim Allen is not moving to Sycamore,” I told them, feeling satisfied with myself. “It’s not true.”

“But it could be,” the 9-year-old said.

EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson There’s what’s at the heart of this whole controversy over “fake news.” It spreads because people would like it to be true, whether it is or not. And the people propagating it have agendas, whether it’s simply to rack up “clicks” or to sway public opinion.

Some people have been convinced that the Russians hacked into U.S. voting machines, that Obama didn’t ban the Pledge of Allegiance, or that pedophiles were operating within the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Some people point out – correctly – that the mainstream media is not blameless when it comes to disseminating inaccurate information, and in isolated cases, blatantly “fake news.” It’s true.

To me, the difference is that with legitimate media, there is no institutional intent to deceive. When mistakes are made – or in the very rare case that there are outright lies or plagiarism – we take responsibility.

Reporters and editors put their personal credibility on the line with the stories they write, and those found to be plagiarists and fabricators are generally expelled from the profession.

The challenge for our society is teaching young people – and in some cases, their elders – news literacy. With information coming from so many different sources today, often through social media sharing, today’s news and information consumer has to understand who the messenger is, what agenda they may have, and based on that, decide how to process the information.

I guess I ruined the fun that my daughters were having in believing that the voice of Buzz Lightyear was moving to town.

However, if Allen really is interested in moving to Sycamore, he’s certainly welcome. I’m sure he’d love the Pumpkin Festival.

MAJOR RENOVATION $15 million nursing home expansion proposed

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center may undergo a $15 million renovation project aimed at improving the morale of residents and employees while streamlining patient services.

The estimated cost is part of a budget from Missouri-based Management Performance Associates, which regulates the nursing center on Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb, and the facility’s operating board.

“We’ve limited the project in size and scope to the most critical things we want to do and, of course, we want to do it without tax dollars,” said Gary Winschel, director of fiscal services for Performance Management Associates. “We want to be able to self-fund this operation, and that’s why we’re committed to the dollar amount, taking out alternates if we have to.”

Performance Management Associates President Michael Scavotto said a $13 million bond issuance and a $2 million equity injection is being considered to finance the project.

Winschel’s calculations show there will be no debt servicing from 2017 to 2019, but there will be $269,000 in capital needs the first year and an additional $400,000 over the next two.

From there, the nursing home’s principal debt payments will range from $392,893 to $477,564 by 2024. However, the facility’s cumulative cash flow will continue to increase during that time, according to Winschel’s projections.

Winschel and Scavotto proposed the idea Tuesday morning to the DeKalb County Public Building Commission.

Part of the proposed expansion is to build 18 new private rooms and convert 13 double rooms into private ones for Medicare patients. However, this will only increase the number of rooms from 190 to 196.

Winschel said this is to ensure that patients who may need rehabilitation for injuries are near each other and not assigned to rooms with long-term residents when discharged from the hospital.

The center opened in March 2000 as a skilled nursing facility for people in need of rehabilitation. At the time, three-quarters of the residents were on Medicaid.

Bart Becker, administrator for the center, said that the gazebo needs a new roof and other repairs, but the tentative plan is to keep it on the grounds.

New construction also will include a new kitchen and private dining room to improve food service to residents, which was a problem addressed during the presentation.

“To serve this many people and to serve them hot food is critical, and to have that spoiled by poor temps or having something off just isn’t acceptable,” Winschel said. “The goal is to keep the food fresher, more usable and presentable to the residents, and going through the hallways just takes time.”

To improve circulation, more corridors will be added for food delivery.

“We’re adding the Medicare unit with private rooms, so while we were doing that, the idea was to enhance the building,” Becker said. “With the creation of the area in the courtyard, it’s going to enhance the delivery of the food carts, almost eliminating the needs of

carts to be delivered in the hallways.”

Interior renovations will include a reduction in the size of nursing stations to allow more lounge space for residents.

“If you’ve ever walked through the nursing home, it’s a little institutionalized,” Winschel said. “It’s got two real large nursing stations and little area where residents can sit and maybe watch TV, so it will be rewarding for a resident or family member to walk around and see that kind of a friendly environment.”

On the county level, the DeKalb County Board, public building commission or the nursing home’s operating board could make a determination to move forward with the project. Winschel said he was asked to present the expansion proposal at the DeKalb County Executive Committee meeting Jan. 11.

As a health service building, the renovations also will require Certificate of Need approval from the Health Facilities and Services Review Board, which evaluates a community’s need, accessibility and financing for additional health care projects.

Winschel said he is not worried

about receiving a Certificate of Need.

Larson and Darby Group of Rockford is expected to be designing the expansion, while Ringland-Johnson Construction of Cherry Valley is being considered to build the project, Winschel said.

Winschel also said it was too early to determine whether the extra space would require an increase in staff.

Of the $15 million proposed budget, roughly $11.3 million are needed for hard costs, including $5.2 million for the transitional Medicare unit and dining services, $2 million for the center courtyard area, $1.5 million for interior renovations, $500,000 for furniture and equipment, $1 million for a generator with an enclosure building, $240,000 for additional chiller capacity and an 8 percent contingency of $837,072.

Soft costs total about $3.7 million and include $1.3 million for capitalized interest, $920,988 in architectural and engineering fees, $565,024 for a construction manager, $366,568 for a project coordinator, $258,667 for miscellaneous legal and underwriting services, a 4 percent contingency of $141,948 and other fees and services.

YMCA leader: Hospital plan for health center not a threat

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The leader of Kishwaukee Family YMCA says he wasn’t taken by surprise by a Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital’s bid to build a $46.4 million fitness center next door and doesn’t expect it to be crippling.

Officials at the YMCA have known about the hospital’s plans for a medically-affiliated community fitness center for years, CEO Mark Spiegelhoff said. They have studied how it might affect their organization, which includes a fitness center at 2500 Bethany Road in DeKalb.

Previous studies indicated the facilities would offer some overlapping services, and also showed about 5 percent of YMCA members could migrate to the proposed Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Health and Fitness Center.

“We’ve known about this for some time,” Spiegelhoff said. “We have a long-standing partnership with the hospital, which has been a tremendous supporter. We’ll be looking for ways to expand that partnership.”

Spiegelhoff said the two agencies had at one point discussed a joint facility, but it wasn’t pursued. He said those talks happened before he joined the YMCA in 2015. He also said that the Y’s focus would remain on serving families and that it would continue to offer scholarships.

If approved by state regulators, the Northwestern building would be erected near the north hospital entrance on Bethany, just north of the old hospital, which was torn down in 2010.

“We believe the addition of the proposed Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Health and Fitness Center will provide patients, residents and our employees with access to enhanced programming focused on improving the health, wellness and fitness of residents in DeKalb County,” Kevin Poorten, president of Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital, said in a statement.

“In addition to the new health and fitness center, we will be enhancing the hospital campus that will feature new green space, a walking path and sensory garden, all with the goal of improving the wellness of our residents.”

Plans for the fitness center include an aquatic center with two pools, locker rooms and child care services.

Application materials submitted to the state review board show the hospital has final working architectural drawings for the project, but render-

ings of the proposed facility weren’t immediately available Tuesday.

“The fitness components of the proposed project are provided to help bridge the gap between health care and fitness by introducing post-therapeutic programs for individuals transitioning into daily activities and exercise,” according to the application.

“The spaces include an indoor walk/ jog track, a gymnasium, group cycling room, stretching and abdominal exercise spaces, free weights, circuit weights, mind/body exercise and a group exercise studio,” according to the application. “There will also be a fully accessible exercise pool, warm water therapy pool and hydrotherapy pools.”

The lobby would include a small retail space selling food and other items, according to the application.

It’s too early in the process to determine how many jobs could be created by the project, or how much memberships would cost, Northwestern spokesman Christopher King said. The Y offers adult memberships for $43.25 a month.

officials don’t see their project as a direct competitor to the YMCA, according to the hospital’s application to the state.

“Because a medically affiliated fitness center incorporates medically-trained personnel into the staff, a safe environment is created for people with mobility challenges or those who have not typically exercised,” the application said. “Studies show that 40 to 60 percent of members of medically based fitness centers have never been a member of another fitness center.”

Before construction can begin, the hospital will need to get a permit from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board and approval from the city of DeKalb.

“In the coming weeks, we look forward to working with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board during the application process,” Poorten said in a statement.

By law, anyone can submit a written request a public hearing on the hospital’s proposal. There had been no such request as of Tuesday afternoon, senior reviewer Mike Constantino said. Written requests for public hearing must be received by the review board no later than Jan 13. No emails or faxes will be accepted.

The review board is tentatively scheduled to consider the hospital’s application at its March 14 meeting at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. A staff report on the project is expected to be posted online Feb. 28, according to the review board’s website.

If approved, construction could start in April and the project could be completed by March 2019, records show.

D-427 explores enhancing Spartan TV using public channel

SYCAMORE – The student-produced Spartan TV could reach a bigger audience if the city grants Sycamore School District 427 access to its public cable channel.

The Sycamore City Council on Tuesday discussed a possible partnership between the district and Comcast that would allow students to broadcast their local news and event coverage on Comcast Channel 14.

The channel is available for noncommercial public education and government programming through the city’s franchise agreement with Comcast, but the city has not used it because of the equipment costs and

staffing it would require.

However, the school district has a studio and equipment donated by a Sycamore High School graduate and plans to use private funding to pay for the connection to the Comcast network.

City Manager Brian Gregory said the district has reached out about potential use of the channel as its Spartan TV program and learning model has evolved.

“It provides an educational opportunity for students that goes beyond the traditional classroom,” he said.

Gregory said the channel would not only enhance students’ education, but it would also inform the community through a digital bulletin board.

“I think there’s a strong oppor-

tunity for the district to grow what they’re doing on the learning side and also help us get a message out about the school district and provide a benefit to the community,” he said.

District 427 Superintendent Kathy Countryman said Spartan TV began four years ago with a couple of cameras, and now students have access to a broadcast trailer for live streaming events.

“We’re always looking for authentic learning environments for our students,” she said. “That’s one of our goals, and we find that the city of Sycamore is really a place where those authentic environments happen all the time.”

First Ward Alderman Curt Lang said the channel should also be used to broadcast messages from the city.

LOCAL & STATE BRIEFS DeKalb police cite 7 businesses for underage tobacco sales

DeKALB – DeKalb police cited seven local businesses for selling tobacco products to minors during a recent compliance check.

The compliance checks were performed to determine whether local tobacco retailers were complying with local minimum-age tobacco laws that prohibit the sale of tobacco to minors, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department.

With the help from a grant awarded by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission’s “Kids Can’t Buy Em Here” Tobacco Enforcement Program, the city has been educating retailers on minimum-age tobacco laws and the importance of verifying the age of their customers while conducting compliance checks of area tobacco retailers.

Tobacco retailers were each given an information kit and spoken to by a police department employee. Tobacco retailers were inspected during the second of three rounds of compliance checks on all tobacco retailers in the community, according to the news release.

The checks were conducted at 27 tobacco retailers throughout the city; seven of them failed.

“The thing that seems to me would be very beneficial would be for the city and school to be able to combine information, like police and fire for emergencies,” he said. “It would really be an asset to us as well as a learning process for students.”

Joan Sage, a Comcast representative, said this would be a possibility.

“Because of origination point being at the school, you can break in at any time to do a live broadcast,” she said. “Now, that’s going to have to be monitored very closely, but you do have the ability to right now just flip the switch and do that.”

Gregory said the city and school district would have to reach an agreement outlining the requirements and responsibilities involved for use of the channel.

CHICAGO – President-elect Donald Trump said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel should ask for federal help if he isn’t able to bring down a homicide count that soared last year to 762 – the most killings in nearly two decades and more than New York and Los Angeles combined.

Trump pointed to the spike in deaths in a Twitter post earlier this week, writing: “If Mayor can’t do it he must ask for federal help!” Emanuel spokesman Adam Collins responded in a statement by saying that if the federal government wants to help, it can fund summer jobs programs for at-risk youth and pass meaningful gun laws.

Trump isn’t the first to broach the idea that the U.S. government could do more to help stem predominantly gang-related violence on Chicago’s South and West sides. But now, as on earlier occasions, what more the federal government can do isn’t at all clear.

Duckworth sworn in as new U.S. senator for Illinois

CHICAGO – Vice President Joe Biden has sworn in Tammy Duckworth as Illinois’ new U.S. senator at a ceremony in Washington.

Duckworth’s press secretary, Sean Savett, said U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois escorted Duckworth to the Tuesday afternoon ceremony. Savett said Duckworth and the vice president also did a traditional re-creation of the ceremony shortly afterward, and her family, including her 2-year-old daughter, Abigail, and her husband, Bryan, were there.

But federal statute, known as the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, prohibits federal troops from being deployed in civil law enforcement. While a president could try to find legal loopholes to get around that prohibition, the legalities of any such deployment would pose major obstacles. A heavy-handed intervention could upset many conservatives who advocate for states’ rights.

Trump has not broached the possibility of using troops, although the idea comes up from time to time in Illinois.

Man fatally shot after altercation with deputy

VILLA PARK – Authorities said a man has been fatally shot after getting into an altercation with a sheriff’s deputy in suburban Chicago.

The DuPage County sheriff’s office said in a statement that the deputy responded Monday to a reported violent domestic incident near the community of Villa Park and the man was wounded in an “officer-involved shooting.” He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The man’s name wasn’t immediately confirmed by authorities. The DuPage County coroner’s office said an autopsy was planned for Tuesday.

Current U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon came under pressure when selected to be the top federal law enforcement official in Chicago three years ago to put violent crime at the top of the city’s agenda. But from the start of his tenure, he tempered expectations about what a U.S. attorney’s office could do.

He had said repeatedly that communities couldn’t arrest their way out of the problem of violence and that a more holistic approach – one that also addresses socioeconomic problems – is required.

Illinois State Police are handling the investigation at the request of officials from DuPage County. The deputy’s name wasn’t immediately released.

Rockford man was New Year’s shooting victim

ROCKFORD – Authorities have identified a Rockford man who was shot dead during a fight at a hotel early on New Year’s Day. The Rockford Register Star reported that the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office pronounced 34-year-old Joshua Jamerson dead at 5:35 a.m. Sunday at the side of the Cliffbreakers Riverside Hotel and Conference Center where he was found. Three others were shot and injured in the same incident. Police said one victim was critically wounded and two others suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Jamerson’s death is the first homicide of the year in Rockford.

Fardon said in a September speech that his office and federal agencies including the FBI, DEA and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives “have ramped up their resources to help tamp down this spike in violence.”

He also said federal agencies had launched new crime-fighting programs with city and state officials, though he didn’t provide details. He added about the bid to bring violence down: “Suffice it to say all oars from those agencies, including the FBI, are in the water right now.”

Gun charges

Then-U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder promised in 2014 that the Department of Justice would do what it could to fight gun violence in Chicago. That was easier said than done. A records review by the Chicago Sun-Times found numbers of federal gun cases out of Chicago declined from around 2012 to 2015.

It started trending back up in 2015, with 84 defendants charged under U.S. gun statutes between mid-2015 and mid-2016.

Responding to the Sun-Times, Fardon wrote in the newspaper in October that the drop-off in gun charges in 2014 to fewer than 60 had at least something to do with a federal hiring freeze, when his office went from 172 prosecutors to below 130. The numbers are getting back up to where they need to be, he said. He said half of his prosecutors are focused on the types of cases linked to street-level violence.

4 killed in southern Illinois plane crash identified

VIENNA – Authorities in southern Illinois have identified the four people who died after a single-engine plane crashed in a wooded area on New Year’s Eve. Johnson County Coroner David Rockwell said 34-year-old Curt Terpstra, 37-year-old Krista Green, 35-year-old Jordan Linder and his 26-year-old sister, Jasmine Linder, died in Saturday night’s crash. All four were from Iowa.

The Federal Aviation Administration has said the Piper PA28 aircraft went down in unknown circumstances. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

Johnson County is about 130 miles southeast of St. Louis, near the Shawnee National Forest.

After Trump tweet, GOP won’t gut ethics office

WASHINGTON – The new GOP era in Washington got off to a messy start Tuesday as House Republicans, under pressure from President-elect Donald Trump, abruptly dropped plans to gut an independent congressional ethics board.

The dizzying about-face came as lawmakers convened for the first day of the 115th Congress, an occasion normally reserved for pomp and ceremony under the Capitol Dome. Instead, House Republicans found themselves under attack not only from Democrats, but also from their new president, over their secretive move Monday to neuter the independent Office of Congressional Ethics and place it under lawmakers’ control.

GOP leaders scrambled to contain the damage, and within hours of Trump registering his criticism on Twitter, they called an emergency meeting where House Republicans voted without opposition to undo the change.

The episode, coming even before the new Congress was convened and lawmakers were sworn in, was a powerful illustration of the sway Trump may hold over his party in a Washington that will be fully under Republican control for the first time in a decade. GOP lawmakers who’ve felt unfairly targeted by the ethics office had defied their own leaders with their initial vote to neuter the body, but once Trump weighed in, they backpedaled immediately.

“With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the

Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it may be, their number one act and priority,” Trump had asked over Twitter Tuesday morning, in an objection that appeared focused more on timing than on substance. Trump, who will take office in a little over two weeks, said the focus should be on tax reform and health care, and he included the hash-tag #DTS, for “Drain the Swamp,” his oft-repeated campaign promise to bring change to Washington.

Democrats and even many Republicans were quick to point out that the lawmakers’ plans for their ethics watchdog flew in the face of that notion. The measure was part of a GOP-written rules package that looked like it could fail after Trump registered his objections amid a public outcry from good government activists.

The stripped-down package was approved late Tuesday by the House, 234-193.

“We were elected on a promise to drain the swamp, and starting the session by relaxing ethics rules is a very bad start,” said GOP Rep. Tom McClintock of California.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy mentioned Trump’s opposition in the emergency meeting, and some lawmakers said it had a powerful effect.

“I do believe when President-elect Trump tweeted out ... members got calls,” said Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Pa. Trump spoke by phone with House Speaker Paul Ryan on Tuesday after the ethics change was dropped.

The Office of Congressional Ethics was created in 2008 after several bribery and corruption cases in the House, but lawmakers of both parties have groused about the way it operates.

Legislature’s mandate appetite keeps growing Illinois, the first state in the nation to do so, now requires that stylists, cosmetologists, aestheticians, hair braiders and nail technicians must receive an hour of abuse-prevention training if they wish to continue in their chosen field. The power of licensing gives the government work-or-no-work power over applicants, and Illinois’ legislative policymakers, in their finite wisdom, have decided domestic violence is an important enough issue to issue another mandate.

There is no doubt domestic violence is a serious problem, and it may well be a hairdresser, armed with a useful phone number or a helpful suggestion, can be helpful on the fringes of this problem. But the bigger question is how far the government ought to be allowed to go to draft private parties into the public effort to address this issue?

Bartenders are renowned as listeners, whether they wish to be or not. Accountants surely hear a story or two as they review family financial issues that may be related to financial problems that can be at the root of family discord. Further, why limit the mandate to business relationships? Aren’t neighbors often close? If they are, why not another mandate requiring everyone who has a neighbor to be subject to this well-intentioned mandate? After all, what’s good for the goose (hairstylists) ought to be good for the gander (everyone else).

As is often the case with legislative solutions aimed more at attracting votes than solving problems, there is less to this mandate than meets the eye. The law does not require the stylists who become aware of a domestic abuse problem to report it. It also shields them from any legal liability if they do. All it orders is hairdressers submit to an hour of mandated abuse training as a part of the licensing process. After that, they may forget about it. Or they may use what they learn to connect clients with services. As government intrusions go, it’s minimally invasive on a chosen few. As a precedent for future government overreach, however, it’s troubling.

One of the common complaints about government concerns its failure to function effectively in pursuit of the common good. In other words, the more government fails to meet its core functions, the more grandiose it becomes in pursuit of nontraditional issues to address.

Illinois, an essentially failed state deep in debt and paralyzed by willful political dysfunction, can’t pass a state budget as mandated by its Constitution.

But it can pass domestic violence mandates on hairdressers. It’s no wonder a vast majority of the people here say this state is headed in the wrong direction.

Hoping for Pence at his best We frequently disagreed with Gov. Mike Pence’s policies, but never his demeanor. He practices the art of political and personal civility, and he generally promotes basic American values. Anyone who dismisses these virtues as trivial has not followed the downhill trajectory of national public discourse.

As Pence prepares to ascend to the vice presidency this month, it may be instructive to ponder the strengths and weaknesses of his style as governor.

Pence’s precise role in the Donald Trump administration has been the subject of wide speculation.

After a shaky start for the incoming administration’s transition team, Pence took over and quickly got the process on track. Some saw that as a sign the vice president-elect would have outsized influence on all areas of policy in the Trump White House.

But the nonpartisan Real-

ClearPolitics.com wrote this week “Pence’s style has so far suggested a quieter, less influential approach.” Pence’s role may more closely resemble Joe Biden’s “loyal foot soldier” manner than the more powerful vice presidency of Dick Cheney, whose approach to the office Pence has said he would like to emulate, the website reported.

As governor, Pence has seemed most effective when he has drawn on his skills as a problem-solver and suggested new approaches.

His Regional Cities plan, for instance, was a creative answer to the need for Indiana to help struggling rural counties share in economic development. His response to the state’s opioid crisis was a triumph of practicality over ideology. He created a task force that included a wide range of decision-makers and implemented their recommendations quickly.

He overcame his long aversion to needle-exchange programs when

an HIV epidemic threatened to overwhelm Scott County.

Pence was at his best when he fashioned a conservative alternative to the Medicaid-expansion provision of the Affordable Care Act. Obamacare remains anathema to Pence. But without Pence’s willingness to look for a workable solution, hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers would have been left without access to medical insurance.

There was another thread Pence’s approach to these issues had in common – sensitivity to the human needs that must underlie policy decisions. Gov. Pence was at his least effective when he ignored sensitivity and allowed ideology to dictate his decisions.

Pence could become just another ideological voice in the Trump administration. But Pence at his best could attempt to bring a blend of caring, civility and pragmatism to Trump-era policies.

siastic base of followers who will believe what he says – and thereby reject facts from mainstream media, policy analysts, government agencies that collect data, and the scientific community.

During his just-completed thank-you tour, Trump repeatedly claimed, for example, that the murder rate in the United States is the largest it’s been in 45 years. In fact, it’s near a 50-year low, according to the FBI. He also repeatedly said he won the election by a “landslide,” when in fact he lost the popular vote by 2.8 million votes.

And Trump repeatedly asserted that the election was marred by massive voting fraud, when in fact there has been no evidence of voting fraud at all (unless you consider the possibility that Russia hacked into our voting systems – which Trump dismisses).

A democracy depends on truth.

Trump’s claims that the murder rate is soaring may elicit support for policies such as harsher policing and sentenc-

ing – the opposite of what we need. His assertions that he won by a landslide may give him a mandate he doesn’t deserve. His claims of massive voter fraud could legitimize further efforts to suppress votes through rigid ID and other requirements.

In short, the rallies and tweets give Trump an unprecedented platform for telling Big Lies without fear of contradiction – and therefore for advancing whatever agenda he wishes.

It’s no coincidence that Trump continues to denigrate the media and hasn’t held a news conference since July.

A president intent on developing a base of enthusiastic supporters who believe his bald-faced lies poses a clear threat to American democracy.

Trump nixes pet projects of liberal, conservative elites It’s been a tough year for political elites, here and around the world, what with June’s passage of Brexit in Britain, the repudiation of Colombia’s Nobel Peace Prize recipient in the October FARC referendum and the defeat of America’s Nobel Peace Prize recipient’s preferred candidate in the November presidential election.

Not all the consequences are clear.

But one thing seems true: The election of Donald Trump has put the kibosh on two projects long pursued by American elites, the entitlement reform sought by conservative elites and the measures to address climate change sought by liberal elites.

Neither problem is pressing right now. But elites believe that America is headed to disaster – fiscal ruin, flooded plains – if current policies remain in place. These elites believe they have a responsibility to look far ahead and prevent disasters that they, unlike most ordinary people, foresee.

Trump disagrees with them. He didn’t have much elite support in his campaign for president, and he has made plain that he’s opposed to significant changes in entitlements and doesn’t see future global warming as justifying measures that kill jobs and choke off economic growth.

VIEWS Michael Barone As president, he will have command of the executive branch and a veto to check Congress. It’s hard to see how Republicans in Congress will go to the trouble of addressing entitlements if their efforts can’t succeed. And it will be hard for liberal elites to frustrate his policies.

He’s on particularly strong ground on climate change. Global warming alarmists proclaim that their dire scenarios are certain to occur, and they would be clearly right if the only thing affecting temperatures were carbon dioxide emissions. But many other things (e.g., the sun) affect climate, as well, and the interactions among them and their differing effects are not fully understood, as the failure of climate scientists’ models to explain past observations shows.

Liberal elites tell us that “the science is settled” and that people must have faith in their predictions. But science is never settled. Scientists produce theories and test them against observations.

When Albert Einstein announced his

relativity theory in 1905, he didn’t ask people to have faith. He claimed that his theory would do a better job than Isaac Newton’s of predicting observations in a solar eclipse in 1919.

It is religion, not science, that demands that people have faith in things that otherwise seem unlikely, brands those who do not as “heretics” and “deniers,” requires participation in repeated rituals, and permits sinners to purchase indulgences.

The sensible thing to do about possible climate change is to learn more, to fund research (and not just by believers in the alarmist faith), to think seriously about how to mitigate possible bad effects – and to take advantage of possible good ones.

In the meantime, we are not going to be bound by the Paris climate agreement and we are not going to phase out fossil fuels. We may even stop harassing “heretics” and “deniers,” at least for the next four years.

Conservative elites’ concern about entitlements is based on solider numbers than liberal elites’ concern about climate. We know just about how many Americans will turn 67 in 2082 (they were born last year), and we can make reasonably good estimates of how many

immigrants will. We also have a pretty good idea of how much Social Security beneficiaries will be entitled to then – although we have a somewhat less firm idea of how many people will be in the workforce paying taxes and less firm estimates of Medicare costs.

There’s a strong case for making adjustments now because Social Security benefits already exceed payroll tax revenue and threaten to crowd out other federal spending. The longer we wait the more expensive and painful adjustments will be.

Trump was elected this year with a lower percentage, but with crucial votes from groups that formerly voted Democratic. He had key support from modest-income Midwesterners opposed to any entitlement changes. He had key support in energy-producing areas opposed to discouraging fossil fuels.

Conservative and liberal elites may have superior long-range vision. But they’re not going to get the policies they want for the next four years.

Donald Trump has just finished the last of his nine post-election “thank-you tour” rallies. Why did he do them? And why is he planning further rallies after he becomes president?

One clue is that Trump conducted them only in the states he won. And most attendees appeared to have voted for him – overwhelmingly white, and many wearing Trump hats and T-shirts.

When warm-up speakers asked how many had previously attended a Trump rally, most hands went up.

A second clue is that rather than urge followers to bury the hatchet, Trump wound them up. “It’s a movement,” he said in Mobile, Alabama. He playfully told a crowd in Orlando, Florida, that in the run-up to the election, “You people were vicious, violent, screaming, ‘Where’s the wall?’ ‘We want the wall!’

Screaming, ‘Prison!’ ‘Prison!’ ‘Lock her up!’ I mean, you were going crazy. You

were nasty and mean and vicious.” He called his followers “wild beasts.”

A third clue: Rather than shift from campaigning to governing, Trump’s post-election rallies were almost identical to the rallies he held when he was a candidate – the same format, identical pledges, the same condemnations of the “dishonest” media. They also elicited many of the same audience responses.

And rather than use the rallies to forgive those who criticized him during the campaign, he employed them to settle scores.

Trump vows to continue these rallies after he becomes president. As he told the crowd in Mobile, “They’re saying, ‘As president, he shouldn’t be doing rallies.’ But I think we should, right? We’ve done everything else the opposite. This is the way you get an honest word out.”

“Get an honest word out”? There’s the real tipoff.

GENOA – After Jesi Nay hit a pair of free throws in the fourth quarter, she and the Genoa-Kingston girls basketball team celebrated her reaching the 1,000-point mark for her career.

But Kylie Feuerbach and Sycamore would have the last celebration.

Feuerbach hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Spartans knocked off the Cogs, 40-39, on Tuesday to snap a two-game losing streak.

Sycamore inbounded the ball with 2.3 seconds left, with Taryn Mathey finding Feuerbach, who worked it to the top of the key, letting lose a light floating shot as the buzzer sounded. It swished through the net as she stood staring as her teammates mobbed her.

“It went in and I didn’t process it,” Feuerbach said. “It just kind of happened.”

Feuerbach said the plan was to find Kate Majerus – who scored 15 for the Spartans.

“Taryn was supposed to inbounds to me and I was supposed to look for a shooter (Majerus), but she wasn’t open,” said Feuerbach, who finished with 10 points. “She was shooting all her shots and making them, so I was like I have to find her. But she was getting guarded, and I was like 2.3 seconds – I have to do something. So I just pulled up and shot it.”

Sycamore (9-5) hadn’t led since a Nay 3-pointer put the Cogs (12-3) ahead by one, part of a larger 14-0 run that ended with Genoa-Kingston leading 21-12 in the second quarter. The Spartans wouldn’t lead again until Feuerbach’s buzzer-beater.

Nay’s free throws put the Cogs up four, but Majerus nailed a 3 with 4:14 left, cutting the G-K lead to one. Julie Galauner, who scored 15 for the Cogs, answered back with a 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions sandwiched around a Maria Wright layup for Sycamore to extend the Genoa-Kingston lead to 38-33 with 2:48 left.

The Cogs were up 38-35 with 1:06 left when Galauner missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free-throw situation.

Majerus missed a three in the final 10 seconds, with the Cogs chasing down the long rebound on their half of the court, but Sycamore quickly forced a turnover, setting up the final inbound with 2.3 seconds left.

“They took away Kate, they did a great job, and Kylie took a great shot, knocked it down,” Sycamore coach Adam Wickness said. “I was very impressed with her poise at the end of the game. She isn’t freaked out. She rose to the occasion, and I’m proud of her.”

The Cogs only scored five points in the third quarter, committing six turnovers in the frame. Genoa-Kingston coach Kyle Henkel said the rough third quarter hurt the Cogs.

“I don’t think we came out, and I don’t know why, ready for any sort of pressure,” Henkel said. “That was where I thought we faltered a little bit.

But we did a nice job, bounced back, competed and a good player made a good shot at the end of the game.”

Nay joined Galauner and three other Cogs in the 1,000-point club for their careers.

“I’m very proud of her,” Henkel said. “People don’t see the hard work that she puts in, that both she and Ju-

lie put in, behind the scenes and in practice to get to where they are.”

The Spartans lost their last two games at the Oswego East tourney, to the hosts and Queen of Peace. Like the Cogs, both of them had two losses or fewer at the time they played the Spartans.

“We tried to beef up our schedule during tournaments and try to play some bigger schools,” Wickness said.

“I think you saw that at Oswego East.

Queen of Peace isn’t a bigger school, but they’re a very good team. We try to bolster our nonconference schedule so we are in tight games against good schools so we can make a postseason run.”

Tough 2nd quarter dooms Spartans

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – It was an uphill climb all night for the Sycamore boys basketball team.

The second quarter was no help, either.

The Spartans cut a double-figure deficit to seven in the fourth quarter, but trailed wire-to-wire and fell, 49-40, to Burlington Central on Tuesday night in Sycamore.

The Rockets (11-1) turned an 11-7 first-quarter lead into a 28-15 edge at halftime by turning several Sycamore mistakes into easy baskets. The Spartans finished 3-for-8 shooting in the quarter with six turnovers, while the Rockets went 8 for 11 – including six baskets made near the rim.

“The second quarter is when they pushed the lead out and it was sort of there the rest of the game,” Sycamore

coach Ryan Picolotti said. “The one spurt that they had, that’s what we talked about at halftime – if we didn’t give up the transition buckets after turnovers, it was a relatively close game.”

Sycamore senior Jack Mizgalski was the only Spartans player in double figures, scoring a team-high 11 points on 5-for-14 shooting with seven rebounds.

Senior guard Jordan Tolzin went 3 for 7 from 3-point range to finish with nine points.

The Rockets got a game-high 15 points from junior wing Zach Schutta, along with 11 points from senior guard Emmanuel Wells.

Burlington Central is coming off a third-place finish at the Plano Christmas Classic last week, while the Spartans (6-6) have lost four in a row – including the final three games at the E.C. Nichols Holiday Tournament at Marengo, each of which came by at least 14 points.

“You go through those stretches,” Picolotti said. “At the Marengo tournament, we just couldn’t put the ball in the basket. We had some good practices and I saw some improvement here, but it comes down to, at this level, you just can’t turn the ball over.”

After trailing by as much as 16 in the first half, the Spartans had a pair of 8-2 runs to cut it into single digits twice in the second half. The first came midway through the third quarter behind jumpers by Mizgalski and senior Ty Sulaver, a put-back by Mizgalski and a layup by senior post Keyshawn Stallworth. The final basket by Stallworth made it 34-26 with 2:29 left in the third – the first time the lead was in single digits since midway through the second quarter.

“At halftime, we talked about that we have to be more aggressive,” Picolotti said. “We wanted to get the ball inside, and they do a great job of pressuring you and taking you out of what you

Spartans bounce back, beat rival Barbs after dropping first game

sports@daily-chronicle.com The DeKalb boys bowling team set the tone early by winning the first game against Sycamore on Tuesday, but was unable to take the series against the Spartans. Sycamore prevailed, 3,390-3,236.

The Barbs took the first game after two of the top three scores came from the DeKalb roster. Clayton Lindgren bowled a 210, while Nicklaus Eberly finished with 207 for the Barbs. Sycamore’s Lucas Wright bowled a 208.

The final score of the first game was 1,105-1,041 DeKalb.

The Spartans rallied to win the next two games to win the meet against their rivals. The highest score of the day came in the second game when Sycamore’s Kobey Dodson bowled a 247, 25 pins better than the second-highest games of the day. DeKalb’s Logan Zarek bowled a 222 in the second game, while Dodson bowled the same score in the third game.

After falling in the first game, senior leadership propelled Sycamore to win the meet.

After we lost the first game, the seniors gathered everyone together and gave a pep talk and were able to pull everyone together. After that moment, the team didn’t bowl outstanding, but it was good enough to win.”

“Most of the kids bowl here regularly, but they weren’t really close to their averages. So I think the layoff hurt us a bit today. The seniors on the varsity side impressed me the most today. After we lost the first game, the seniors gathered everyone together and gave

The second game of the series was closer; the final score had a differential of 22 pins, but the Spartans dominated in Game 3, 1,206-1,010. DeKalb coach Allen Collins said the overall youth of his team played a role in the defeat.

“I think we bowled well, but Sycamore looked really strong against us in those last two games,” Collins said. “We have mostly freshmen and sophomores on my team, and they’re going up against a seasoned senior team in Sycamore, so I’m proud of my guys. We can work on our maturity and commitment to the game itself.

The DeKalb girls also were at Mardi Gras Lanes bowling against Rochelle. The girls dominated by winning the series, 3,132-2,665. DeKalb’s Reagan Harold led all bowlers with her score of 246 in the third game.

sports@daily-chronicle.com In a game that didn’t see a double-digit lead, the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team missed a late 3-pointer and lost, 69-67, on Tuesday night at Miami (Ohio) to open up Mid-American Conference play.

Huskies freshman guard Eugene German had a team-high 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting, but missed a 3 with eight seconds left in the game that would have given Northern Illinois (8-6 overall, 0-1 in MAC West) the lead.

German was one of five players in double figures for the Huskies. Senior wing Aaric Armstead had 13 points

and six rebounds, sophomore wing Levi Bradley had a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Marin Maric and Dontel Highsmith each added 10 points in the loss.

Abdoulaye Harouna scored a gamehigh 18 points for the RedHawks, who improved to 8-6 overall and 1-0 in MAC East.

CHICAGO – Jimmy Butler didn’t do a lot in practice Tuesday.

“He’s tired,’’ coach Fred Hoiberg said with a smile, recalling the 52 points Butler scored Monday in the Bulls’ 118-111 victory against the Hornets.

As good as Butler is, the Bulls know they can’t lean on him that hard every game.

That could put some pressure on the rest of the roster because Dwyane Wade, who missed the game because of swelling in his left knee, will be a game-time decision Wednesday, when the Bulls play in Cleveland.

Denzel Valentine, who sprained his left ankle after making three 3-pointers, will not make the trip.

“We had a couple of guys who didn’t do much, including Dwyane,’’ Hoiberg said. “He’s feeling better. His swelling is down. We’ll make a determination on him tomorrow. It will probably be all the way up until game time. Denzel will not make the trip. He has pretty significant swelling in that ankle, which obviously is too bad, based on how he played and the spark he gave our team.’’

Hoiberg was not overly concerned about Wade’s situation.

“He gets [swelling] every year, he said, especially the last couple of years,’’ Hoiberg said.

“It’s a matter of maintaining his treatments and being diligent with it, which he’ll do. He’s done a great job of keeping his body in shape.

At this stage of his career, he knows his body as well as anybody. In his mind, it’s not anything that will be around long term.’’

The status of Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving also is in doubt. Irving has missed the past two games after injuring his right hamstring in a collision with LeBron James.

In other words, it’s not clear who’ll be avail-

able when the Bulls go after their second win against the Cavs, whom they defeated 111-105 on Dec. 2 at the United Center.

Even if Wade and Valentine aren’t available, Hoiberg would not commit to using former starter Rajon Rondo, who has not played in the past two games after falling out of favor.

“We’ll see how everything plays out,’’ Hoiberg said. “We’ll cross that bridge when and if that happens.’’

With their depleted roster, the Bulls take comfort in knowing that Butler is capable of being an offensive force.

“It was really an effortless 52 for him,’’ Hoiberg said. “His rhythm, his tempo, was so good. His decision-making was so good. He didn’t force the issue. He just rose with confidence all night long. He didn’t take a contested shot all night. [And with] the 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals, he did everything for us and did it with great pace.’’

As it turns out, Butler didn’t know he was on the verge of scoring 50. In the last minute, Michael-Carter Williams jokingly went to the free-throw line to shoot a technical.

“I was like, ‘Jim, I’ve got this one. You’re good,’ ’’ Carter-Williams said. “I was just messing with him. And he was like, ‘All right, go ahead.’ But I said, ‘No, you have 49 points. Obviously, I want you to get 50.’ I was like, ‘Come on, bro, you’ve got 49.’ ’’ That said, while the Bulls would rather not lean that hard on Butler, he has shown that kind of ability.

“A player like Jimmy can have big nights like that, and last night we definitely needed it,’’ Carter-Williams said. “Maybe to answer your question, some nights we’re going to need AP photo Jimmy to score big, and he can do that. So that’s what we expect out of him sometimes. SPORTS BRIEFS Minnesota fires football coach Tracy Claeys

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota fired coach Tracy Claeys on Tuesday, just more than two weeks after the football program became embroiled in a standoff with the administration over the suspension of 10 players in connection with allegations of sexual assault, the school announced.

Athletic director Mark Coyle said he made the decision to “address challenges in recruiting, ticket sales and the culture of the program. We need strong leadership to take Gopher football to the next level and address these challenges.”

The Golden Gophers went 9-4 this season and beat Washington State in the Holiday Bowl. But that was overshadowed by a threatened boycott of the bowl by the entire team a week before the game.

The players ultimately decided against a boycott.

Claeys publicly supported his players in lobbying for fairness in the sexual assault investigation. A tweet he sent out in support of their movement drew wide criticism from victims’ rights groups and faculty on campus. Claeys later said he chose his words poorly and planned to donate $50,000 to raise awareness for sexual assault victims.

Grains the key to healthier eating in ’17

By THE CULINARY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA If you’re anything like the rest of us, you might tend to needlessly overcomplicate your life. You plan an elaborate dinner for a Wednesday night. You schedule a meeting across town at rush hour. With all of the small, daily challenges we face, when it comes to healthy eating, the key to success is making life as uncomplicated as possible, so choosing the right foods is a piece of – fruit.

You likely have seen pictures with refrigerators stacked full of organized containers and healthy weeknight meals ready to throw in a slow cooker.

It’s a great idea that probably is not in the cards for most of us, but it does serve as inspiration to make one or two small changes that drastically can improve the quality of our lives and our lunches.

Grain salads, like this recipe for Farro with Roasted Winter Vegetables, might be the key to healthier eating in the new year. If you’re stuck in a lunch rut – ordering in to the office every day, eating a peanut butter sandwich or skipping it altogether – grain salads are an easy way to mix it up. Made with nutritious and

hearty whole grains like wheat berries, barley and quinoa, grain salads are packed full of protein, fiber and vitamins. When you combine grains with your favorite fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and nuts and top them with flavorful vinaigrettes, herbs and spices, you can eat a different salad every day, with just a small amount of effort.

At the beginning of the week, cook a big batch of grains to cool and refrigerate. Each day, add your favorite salad veggies or leftovers to make a satisfying lunch that changes every day of the week. In minutes, you could have a salad of wheat berries, roasted Brussels sprouts, dried cherries and chopped pecans. And the next day, wheat berries with grilled chicken, roasted red peppers and balsamic vinaigrette. Remember, grain salads aren’t just for stuffing your lunch box.

Mix your cooked grains with almond butter, a splash of honey, chopped apples and cinnamon for breakfast-onthe-go. Or use a leftover salad to stuff bell peppers, cabbage or halved acorn squash for a hearty dinner. How’s that for meal prep?

Keep in mind some farro sold in the United States is processed to remove

some or all of its tough outer bran for ease of cooking. Labeled as “semipearled” or “pearled,” this farro is stripped of its coveted whole grain status, as well as much of its nutrients.

Whole grain farro requires a little bit of extra time to prepare; you’ll want to soak it overnight before cooking it, to ensure the perfect chewy texture.

Start to finish: 2 hours, 5 minutes (Active: 35 minutes. Inactive: 1 hour, 30 minutes) Servings: 5 For the Roasted Squash 4 tablespoons olive oil 1¾ cups (about 8 ounces) diced butternut squash 1¾ cups (about 8 ounces) diced acorn squash For the Farro Bowl 3 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons minced onion 2 cups uncooked farro 4 cups water 1 tablespoon oil 2 cups chopped cabbage 1/2 cup chopped parsley

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. In a medium bowl, toss the butternut squash and acorn squash with the olive oil.

Transfer the squash to a foil-lined baking sheet and place in the oven. Roast until the squash is cooked and brown around the edges, about 1 hour. Remove from the oven and set aside.

Meanwhile, in a medium pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until the onion has softened and is fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add the farro and cook for about 2 more minutes.

Add the water and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Cover the pan and simmer until the farro is cooked and the water is absorbed, about 25 minutes.

While the farro is cooking, heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat. Cook the cabbage until it is softened and browning around the edges, about 5 minutes.

Transfer the cabbage to a large bowl and mix it with the cooked farro and vegetables.

Stir in the parsley. Serve hot, or refrigerate and serve chilled.

Filling, satisfying salad cures winter blahs

We all spend more time inside the minute sweater becomes jacket-weather. And when the indoor winter-blahs get to me, I turn toward my first line of defense to get out of my funk: my diet. When I’m in a slump, I immediately consider what I am eating. I stop processed sugar and focus on getting an extra dose of veggies, protein, fiber and healthy fats filled with brain-and-heart-healthy omegas.

This salad is that dose. It’s filled with high-protein Brussels sprouts as the main green (1 cup of Brussels sprouts has about as much protein as an egg white) coupled with nutrient-rich dark green kale. Also in the salad are a bunch of crunchy, healthy goodies such as walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp hearts and even flax seed.

The varied textures make this dish super-satisfying. A little cooked quinoa means even ground flaxseed and hemp hearts will fit right in without a grainy mouth-feel. And a handful of pomegranate seeds add just the right amount of tart and sweet, rounding out the flavors perfectly. The whole salad is tossed with an avocado ranch dressing that is whipped up in a jiffy in the blender, so even the creamy, fatty dressing is a nutritious ally.

It’s a gorgeous salad – beautiful to behold and to eat. Sure, add a few ounces of poached or roasted salmon if you want more omegas and protein, but honestly this salad is filling and satisfying all on its own, with 16 grams of protein a serving even in

2 cups Brussels sprouts, stem end trimmed 2 cups thin slices of Lacinato kale (dark green variety; about 4 large leaves, thinly sliced) 1 cup cooked quinoa 1/4 cup raw walnuts, chopped 3 tablespoons raw sunflower seeds 1/2 cup toasted pumpkin seeds (pepitas) 3 tablespoons raw hemp hearts (hemp seeds)

For the dressing: 1/2 large avocado 1/2 cup lowfat buttermilk 2 tablespoons prepared salsa 2 tablespoons lime juice (or lemon juice) 1/4 cup water 1 tablespoon minced shallot 1/2 cup roughly chopped cilantro 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper Slice the Brussels sprouts very thinly with a sharp knife, or run them through a food processor fitted with a slicing blade.

You will have about 3 cups of sliced sprouts when done. Mix the sprouts and sliced kale in a large bowl. Add the remaining salad ingredients and toss. Feel free to swap out nuts and seeds for your favorites. In a blender, mix all the dressing ingredients until smooth and creamy. Add an additional tablespoon or two of water if too thick. Pour half the dressing over the salad and toss well. Add more dressing if desired. Serve.

And for those who don’t like Brussels sprouts (and in fact my family is divided), well, more for the rest of us.

You can make the dressing ahead of time, and then just roast the Brussels sprouts before the meal, toss them with the vinaigrette and serve them warm or even room temperature. I’m not a fan of reheating Brussels sprouts, and would prefer to just serve them at room temperature if they cool down.

Don’t over-salt the Brussels sprouts because the anchovies add salt to the dressing. You always can add a pinch of salt to the final tossed salad if you want.

2 pounds Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved Kosher salt

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Toss the Brussels sprouts with 1 tablespoon of the oil and spread them out on a rimmed baking sheet.

Sprinkle with salt. Roast for 20 to 25 minutes until the Brussels sprouts are fairly tender and browned in spots. Let cool slightly, on the baking sheet, for about 10 minutes.

While the Brussels sprouts are cooking, make the dressing. In a food processor place the remaining 3 tablespoons olive oil, the lemon juice, anchovies, garlic, mustard, scallions, parsley and pepper, and process until puréed.

Drizzle the Brussels sprouts with about half of the dressing and toss to coat. Add more dressing if you like. Transfer the Brussels sprouts to a serving dish and serve warm, with the rest of the dressing on the side.

Sycamore orchestras attend national clinic DAILY CHRONICLE The Sycamore Community School District 427 orchestras recently attended the International Midwest Clinic held at McCormick Place in Chicago.

With more than 17,000 attendees from all 50 states and more than 30 countries, the Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Music Conference offers one of the largest annual gatherings for musicians and music educators to attend clinics, exhibits, rehearsal labs and various concerts.

The Sycamore High School Orchestra was invited to be the Demonstration Orchestra at the Bowing Concepts for Musical Phrasing seminar led by clinician Frank Lestina. Select high school orchestra students participated in the clinic.

This project, led by preschool instructors Suzanne Croke and Denise Baker, engaged the school’s 3- and 4-year-old students. School families were invited to donate personal care items, such as tooth-

paste and toothbrushes, deodorant, body soap, shampoo, lotion, feminine products, etc., along with a variety of Christmas treats, gifts and toys to fit into stockings.

The stockings were then filled by the preschool students and delivered to Hope Haven, which will distribute the stockings to the 60 residents residing there this holiday season. For more information on St. Mary’s Catholic School in Sycamore, call 815-895-5215.

The Emergency Medical Services Program has extended the application deadline for Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B) to Jan. 11. There is a mandatory orientation for new students from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 11 in Room B1277 at the college.

The spring semester begins Jan. 17 and registration is in progress.

The course also includes 20 hours of Emergency Department Clinical Experience and four hours of Respiratory Clinical Experience.

Students interested in being admitted to the EMT-B program must place into college-level English and show proof of mumps, measles and Rubella immunity.

A current 2-Step T.B. test is required as well as fingerprinting and criminal background check, flu shots, and drug testing.

The EMS program at Kishwaukee College has graduated 240 paramedics and EMTs over the past five years alone.

Moreover, based on the week-six and week-seven ultrasounds, the lack of nausea in the women who miscarried was not related to a lack of a viable pregnancy.

The authors proposed nausea during pregnancy might have a protective effect by alerting a woman about her condition so as to alter her diet and avoid toxic substances, which could increase nausea or harm a pregnancy. I’m not so sure about this, but it is a possibility.

In regard to this study, I can understand the worry about your lack of nausea as you enter the second trimester of your pregnancy. But when you look further at the study, you find nearly 94 percent of miscarriages happened in the first trimester of the pregnancy. So as you enter the second trimester, there is significantly less likelihood you will have a miscarriage. Also, this study focused on women who had previously had a miscarriage, so its findings may be less applicable to you.

In summary, I wouldn’t be concerned about your lack of nausea. But please do schedule follow-ups with your obstetrician for your regular prenatal care.

Dear Doctor: I just entered my second trimester without any nausea at all. Considering a recent study linking morning sickness to a successful pregnancy, should I be worried?

Dear Reader: Nausea occurs in up to 80 percent of pregnancies. The cause appears to be related to a rapid increase of the pregnancy hormone beta hCG (BHCG) as well as the rise of estrogen. The nausea can be distressing for many women and can lead to worries about a future miscarriage.

Paradoxically, nausea may be an indication of a successful pregnancy. Preliminary studies have found this correlation, but they could not differentiate if the lack of nausea was related only to an early miscarriage or to an overall successful pregnancy.

A 2016 study in JAMA Internal Medicine looked at women between the ages of 18 and 40 who had a history of one or two miscarriages and who were trying to conceive. Of those women who were deemed to be pregnant based on a measurement of BHCG, 797 eventually became pregnant. These women kept daily diaries, recording instances of nausea and vomiting from the second week to the eighth week of their pregnancy. If a woman had nausea once, she was considered to have nausea in the pregnancy.

In week two of their pregnancy, only 20 percent of the women reported nausea, but by week eight of their pregnancy, nearly 85 percent of women had reported nausea.

After the eighth week of the pregnancy, nausea was measured at monthly intervals.

Also, to confirm a viable pregnancy, the women underwent an ultrasound at week six or week seven.

For the next few months we tried, but her new girlfriend treated me like I was a threat. It eventually led to friction, and now my ex thinks I caused it because I was jealous, so she cut off all contact with me.

I’m worried I will never trust anyone again, and I don’t know how to get “myself” back. Here, West would have had to lead away from the spade king or concede a ruff-and-sluff. (Or, if West had a diamond to return, either the suit would be 3-3 or the spade finesse would still be available.)

However, Hegge foiled the plan by playing the diamond queen to swallow his partner’s jack, what is known as a crocodile coup. Now the contract had to fail.
