LOS ANGELES – No, Los Angeles residents, it wasn’t your hangovers playing tricks on you. The Hollywood sign really did read “HOLLYWeeD” for a few hours on New Year’s Day. Police were investigating Sunday after a prankster used giant tarps to turn two of the iconic sign’s white Os into Es sometime overnight.

The vandal, dressed in all black, was recorded by security cameras and could face a misdemeanor trespassing charge, said Sgt. Robert Payan.

The person scaled a protective fence surrounding the sign above Griffith Park and then clambered up each giant letter to drape

the coverings, Payan said.

The prank may be a nod to California voters’ approval in November of Proposition 64, which legalized the recreational use of marijuana, beginning in 2018.

Hikers and tourists in the hills spent the morning snapping photos of themselves in front of the altered sign before park rangers began removing the tarps.

“It’s kind of cool being here at the moment,” Bruce Quinn told KABC-TV. “I thought we came to see the Hollywood sign, not the ‘Hollyweed’ sign. But hey, it’s OK with me!”

While attention-grabbing, the prank was not exactly original. Forty-one years ago to the day – Jan. 1, 1976 – a college student similarly altered the sign, using curtains to make it read “HOLLYWEED.”

Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital proposes $46M wellness center

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital officials want to build a 111,105-square-foot health and fitness center at a cost of $46 million on vacant land on Bethany Road, according to a proposal filed with a state regulatory board.

Northwestern’s proposal calls for a two-story structure that will be on the hospital’s campus at 626 East Bethany Road, southeast of Bethany Road and Greenwood Acres Drive. The facility will be adjacent to the Kishwaukee YMCA, which has one of the biggest fitness centers in the area.

The proposal is on the agenda for the March 14 meeting of the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board.

The board regulates the construction of health facilities based through the Certificate of Need Program, which is used to assess whether proposed health

If board members give the go-ahead, hospital officials expect to start construction in April, according to the application. The anticipated completion date for the health and fitness center is March 2019.

The goal of the center is to provide access to preventative methods of

health care and to improve the overall health of DeKalb County, according to the project application.

“The proposed health and fitness center will focus on wellness and prevention, with special emphasis on the most preventable health conditions and lifestyle behaviors impacting the health of individuals and the community,” the application reads. “Programs and services, including but not limited to recreation and fitness and educational programming, will address the needs of the community.”

The fitness area will compose 72,500 square feet of the total area of the building, and will include an indoor track, weight and abdominal training, therapeutic pools, a child care area and other services.

There also will be 19,200 square feet of doctor’s office space, 4,000 square feet for conference rooms and an auditorium, a 4,500-square-foot lobby, administrative spaces measuring 7,000

square feet and mechanical, electric and plumbing systems measuring 3,705 square feet, the application shows.

Construction of the building is expected to cost $35.5 million, the application says. The remainder comes from $1.8 million in site preparation, $3.2 million in contingency funds, $2.5 million in engineering and architectural fees, $75,000 in consulting, $2.7 million in moveable capital equipment and $1.8 million in additional costs. Plunkett Raysich Architects out of Wisconsin will be designing the building.

Alternative proposals were considered for the project, such as creating a facility without physician office space to save money or converting an existing fitness center to be medically affiliated, but no other options were realistic or fit the needs of the hospital, the application said.

Officials from Northwestern and the Y could not be reached for comment Friday.

Boy starts coat drive for homeless in DeKalb

DeKALB – Five-year-old Brayden Jenkins realized that homeless people need help staying warm during the winter, so he started a coat drive at Roc’s Barber Shop in DeKalb.

“I don’t want them to get sick when they get cold,” Brayden said.

Kendra Jenkins, Brayden’s mother, said her son came up with the idea of giving coats to people who don’t have them while they were sitting in the car on a cold day.

“When we go to the city, he sees homeless people on the sides of the roads, and he always wants to bring money from his piggy bank to give them,” she said.

“He thinks about if they’re cold or sick and what they need.”

Jenkins told her son that people can start coat drives to collect coats for people in need, and Brayden said that was what he wanted to do.

Brayden’s family lives in Marengo but frequents Roc’s Barber Shop, 114 E. Hillcrest Drive in DeKalb.

Jenkins suggested starting the coat

when he heard the idea.

Thompson said the shop will be collecting coats throughout the winter, and he intends to bring them to Hope Haven of DeKalb County.

The two collection boxes Brayden’s family brought in already are filled with coats after about a month of hosting the drive.

Brayden also left a picture of himself with a typed letter explaining why donating coats is important to let customers know about the drive.

Brayden said that for fun, he likes to play with his dog, Bear, that he got for Christmas, and he wants to become a veterinarian when he grows up.

“I love helping animals out,” he said.

Jenkins said Brayden’s family members and teachers have contributed to the coat drive as well, and they weren’t surprised that he came up with the idea because “he always wants to help everyone.”

‘M.A.S.H.’ star William Christopher dies at age 84 The ASSOCIATED PRESS “M.A.S.H.” star William Christopher has died. He was 84.

Christopher’s agent Robert Malcom said the actor died at 5:10 a.m.

Saturday at his home in Pasadena, California.

He told The Associated Press that Christopher’s wife said her husband died peacefully.

Malcom said Christopher was diagnosed with cancer more than a year ago and had been in hospice since the beginning of the week.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and his two sons.

Christopher is best known for his role as Father Francis Mulcahy on “M.A.S.H.,” the 1970s TV show set during the Korean War. “Everyone adored him,” said fellow “M.A.S.H.” actor Loretta Swit. “A great sense of humor and a great humanitarian. He became TV’s quintessential padre as Father Mulcahy on M.A.S.H. It was the most perfect casting ever known.”

The Associated Press CHICAGO – One of the most violent years in Chicago history ended with a sobering tally: 762 homicides, the most in two decades in the city and more than New York and Los Angeles combined.

The nation’s third largest city also saw 1,100 more shooting incidents last year than it did in 2015, according to data released Sunday by the Chicago Police Department. The statistics underline a story of bloodshed that has put Chicago at the center of a national dialogue about gun violence.

The numbers are staggering, even for those who followed the steady news accounts of weekends ending with dozens of shootings and monthly death tolls that hadn’t been seen in years.

The increase in homicides compared to 2015, when 485 were reported, is the largest spike in 60 years.

Police and city officials have lamented the flood of illegal guns into the city, and the crime statistics appeared to support their claims: Police recovered 8,300 illegal guns in 2016, a 20 percent increase from the previous year.

1 dead, 3 hurt in Sunday shooting at Rockford hotel

ROCKFORD – Rockford police said one man is dead and three others were injured during a New Year’s Day shooting at a hotel.

Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea said there was a large group of people fighting in a hallway at Cliffbreakers Riverside Hotel and Conference Center early Sunday. He said several people exchanged gunfire. The chief called it “chaotic at best.” He said investigators are trying to figure out exactly what happened.

O’Shea said no arrests have been made and is asking for anyone with information to contact authorities.

Lovelace team seeks to bar testimony, evidence in retrial

QUINCY – Defense attorneys for a former western Illinois prosecutor accused of killing his wife have filed motions seeking to bar some evidence against their client offered by prosecutors.

Curtis Lovelace is charged with first-degree murder. He’s accused of suffocating his first wife, Cory Lovelace, in 2006. The jury in his first trial failed to reach a verdict.

In motions filed last week, Lovelace’s attorneys asked that evidence obtained from Lovelace’s laptop computer be excluded.

Coroner: 4 dead in southern Illinois small plane crash

VIENNA – Authorities in southern Illinois said four people died New Year’s Eve after a single-engine plane crashed in a wooded area.

Johnson County Coroner David Rockwell said he pronounced the two men and two women dead at about 8:15 p.m. on Saturday at the scene of the crash. He said the victims all appear to be adults and their identities are unknown. The Federal Aviation Administration said a Piper PA28 small aircraft crashed in unknown circumstances on Saturday night.

The FAA said it and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

Police said the shootings in those areas generally weren’t random, with more than 80 percent of the victims having previously been identified by police as more susceptible because of their gang ties or past arrests.

The city has scrambled to address the violence. Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced last year that 1,000 officers would be added to the police department. At the same time, police officials have been trying to figure out why homicides and shootings – which began climbing the year before – suddenly surged.

On Sunday, Johnson said he hoped several initiatives – including more street cameras in some of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods, and the expansion of gunshot-detection systems – would lead to more arrests and drive down the violent crime rate.

Johnson has said several factors have contributed to the increased violence.

He noted 2016 was the first full year since the city was forced in November 2015 to release video of the fatal police shooting of Laquan McDonald, the black 17-year-old boy who was shot 16 times by a white police officer.

Rockwell said autopsies will be scheduled.

Springfield Crime Stoppers cold case effort leads to tips

SPRINGFIELD – Officials said a Springfield initiative focusing attention on old homicide cases that started in the spring still is generating tips.

Springfield Police Officer Mike Badger is coordinator for Crime Stoppers of Sangamon and Menard counties. He said no arrests have been made in the 30 homicides the program highlighted.

However, the Crime Stoppers program received another tip on one of the cases last week.

The Springfield State Journal-Register reported that the program initially focused on 10 unsolved homicides in Springfield and the surrounding area between 2003 and 2014. To help spur tips, Crime Stoppers is offering $5,000 instead of the usual reward of up to $1,000.

ISTANBUL – Turkish police struggled Sunday to track down a gunman who attacked New Year’s Eve revelers at a popular Istanbul nightclub, killing at least 39 people, most of them foreigners. Close to 70 more were wounded.

The attacker, armed with a long-barreled weapon, killed a policeman and a civilian outside the Reina club around 1:15 a.m. before entering and firing at people partying inside, Istanbul Gov. Vasip Sahin said.

“Unfortunately, [he] rained bullets in a very cruel and merciless way on innocent people who were there to celebrate New Year’s and have fun,” Sahin told reporters.

Nearly two-thirds of the people killed were foreigners, many from the Middle East, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency said. It said the bodies of 25 foreign nationals killed in the attack would be delivered to their families Monday.

Countries from India to Belgium reported their citizens among the casualties.

An estimated 600 people were celebrating inside the club, which often is frequented by famous locals, including singers, actors and sports stars. Several shocked revelers were seen fleeing the scene after the shooting, and the music fell silent.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for what authorities immediately called a terrorist attack. Turkish officials did not comment on the possible identity or motives of the

gunman.

The mass shooting followed more than 30 violent acts over the past year in Turkey, which is a member of the NATO alliance and a partner in the U.S.-led coalition fighting against the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. The country endured multiple bombings in 2016, including three in Istanbul alone that authorities blamed on IS, a failed coup attempt in July and renewed conflict with Kurdish rebels in the southeast.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vehemently condemned “the terror attack in Istanbul’s Ortakoy neighborhood in the first hours of 2017” and offered condolences for those who lost their lives, including the “foreign guests.”

Among the dead were an 18-year-old Israeli woman, three Indians, three Lebanese, a woman with dual French-Tunisian citizenship and her Tunisian husband, three Jordanians, a Belgian national and a Kuwaiti citizen, according to those countries’ foreign ministries and a diplomat.

A U.S. State Department official, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity, said one American man was among those wounded. Turkey’s minister for family and social policies, Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya, said citizens of Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Lebanon and Libya were among those injured.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the gunman, who had not been identified, remained at large. “Our security forces have started the necessary operations. God willing, he will be caught in a short period of time,” Soylu said.

WASHINGTON – As Barack Obama began preparing to leave office, the first smartphone-toting U.S. president ordered his team to upgrade the White House’s aging technology for his successor. New computers were purchased and faster internet was installed. Not included in the plans? A courier service.

But that delivery method of a bygone era may be in for a comeback under Donald Trump. Despite his voracious use of Twitter, the president-elect appears to be leaning toward old tech to ensure the security of sensitive messages.

“It’s very important, if you have something really important, write it out and have it delivered by courier, the old-fashioned way because I’ll tell you what, no computer is safe,” Trump told reporters Saturday in response to questions about Russia’s alleged hacking of Democrats during the presidential election. Trump, who doesn’t email or surf the internet, said days earlier that computers “have complicated lives very greatly.”

Trump’s skepticism of some technology marks a sharp contrast from the president he’ll replace on Jan. 20. Obama, who was a youthful 47 years old when he took office, carries a specially outfitted

WASHINGTON – Barack Obama is under pressure during his final weeks as president to do something – anything – to secure the future of hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the U.S. as children who could face deportation under the Trump administration.

His options appear few.

At least 50 congressional Democrats are pushing Obama to take the rare if not unprecedented step of granting pardons to the young immigrants who have stepped forward to identify themselves in exchange for a promise that they’d be safe from deportation. The White House, though, has repeatedly ruled that out.

Several Republican lawmakers are crafting legislative proposals to solidify the place of these immigrants, sometimes called Dreamers, before Donald Trump takes office Jan. 20. Similar efforts have repeatedly failed, even with Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress, so the likelihood of a legislative Hail Mary isn’t great.

That leaves more than 741,000 immigrants wondering what’s next.

Trump’s plans for Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program are unclear. As a candidate, he pledged

Obama’s program allowed young immigrants who came to the United States as children to come forward and go through background checks in exchange for a promise they would be safe from deportation and allowed to apply for work permits. They must reapply for the program and work permits every two years.

While the government promised approved immigrants that they wouldn’t face deportation, the program does not provide a legal immigration status. Under Trump, their personal information, and that of some relatives, could soon be readily accessible to immigration enforcement officials.

When Obama announced the plan in 2012, he said he was taking executive action because Congress hadn’t acted.

“This is not amnesty, this is not immunity,” Obama said at the time. He called the program a “stopgap measure” that would protect young immigrants from deportation while his immigration agencies focused enforcement efforts on criminal immigrants and those who pose a threat to public safety.

The Homeland Security Department made clear then that a future administration could do away with the program.

Dixon scout fixing up 8 tombstones

DIXON – David Swegle wanted to do something unique for his Eagle Scout community project, and bringing the dead back to life certainly qualifies for that category.

The 15-year-old Dixon native isn’t going the route of George A. Romero or Mary Shelley, but he is bringing a second life to some of the oldest tombstones in Oakwood Cemetery.

“I think it’s great to do it because the stones have been buried for 100 years,” he said. “Now, we’re bringing them back to life and giving them a chance to be noticed.”

David, a history buff and sophomore at Newman Central Catholic High School, sought a project that was both rooted in history and beneficial to the community in his trek to become an Eagle Scout, the organization’s highest achievement that only about 5 percent of Boy Scouts reach.

He found such an undertaking after reaching out to the Lee County Historical and Genealogical Society and discovering society President Pat Gorman had been restoring grave markers in the cemetery in his spare time.

David worked with Gorman and identified eight stones that had been buried, broken or displaced, the oldest of which dates to 1845 and belongs to 2-month-old William McCraw.

“The grass keeps encroaching on them and just swallows them up,” Gorman said.

Before unearthing and taking the stones for repairs, David filled out a stack of paperwork requesting the city’s permission for the project in May. He and Gorman dug them up last month – large sandstone slabs weighing about 80 to 100 pounds each – and David and two other scouts in the Dixon-based Troop 85 cleaned them.

Cleaning consisted of applying a special solution geared to removing algae and other material, scrubbing the stones, and hosing them off.

The next step was to re-letter the stones using pungent, dark shadow paint. They plan to seal the stones this weekend, store them during the winter and replant them in the spring.

David also plans to research the departed to discover pieces of their history, their family and the like.

“It’s important to learn about the people of our past, what they did to shape our lives and how they affected everything we do today,” he said.

Gorman and Tom Kitson, a Lee County Board member who began restoring a tombstone about a year ago and is helping to oversee the project, said there could be more than 100 stones buried in the cemetery.

“If you drive through the cemetery and just look at it, it’s just devastat-

ing seeing what nature and vandalism have done to the stones,” Kitson said.

The project centers around the eight stones, but David plans to continue the restorations as a hobby, slowly breathing life into stones that have been weathered by time, vandalism or accidental damage.

“I could spend my whole life doing it – there’s just so many that are buried,” he said.

Sessions likely to put own spin on ‘justice for all’ Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III is one in a long line of reprehensible characters likely to inhabit the Trump White House. But if he is confirmed as the nation’s highest-ranking law enforcement officer, Sessions will be in a position to provoke extraordinary harm in the lives of ordinary Americans.

As U.S. attorney general, Sessions would run the Department of Justice; he’d have jurisdiction over its policing and prosecutions (the FBI is under Justice), as well as its enforcement of civil rights protections. Expect a Sessions-run department to play havoc with the very word “justice.”

Sessions, born in Selma, Alabama, in 1946 (yes, the Selma of Bloody Sunday), is one of those white Americans who never fully accommodated themselves to the changes wrought by the civil rights movement. His civil rights record is well known by those who work to remedy discrimination; that record helped to torpedo his 1986 nomination to a federal judgeship.

As a U.S. attorney in Alabama in the 1980s, he oversaw a weak case accusing civil rights activists of voter fraud – a prosecution the jury rejected in a mere three hours. Further, a black colleague testified that he had called the National

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker Association for the Advancement of Colored People “un-American” and “communist-inspired.” And he had described the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as an “intrusive piece of legislation.”

Sessions’ retrograde positions on civil rights, though, didn’t stop his political rise. In fact, those positions likely accelerated his ascent in Alabama, where he was elected state attorney general before winning a seat in the U.S. Senate. It was from that post, to which he has been elected three times, that he became one of the first high-ranking politicians to cozy up to Donald Trump.

In the Senate, Sessions learned to publicly moderate his rhetoric and to take positions that made him seem less racist.

Still, his bigotry came to the fore as he pushed legislation to oppress gays and immigrants. Not only did he vote against the bill that repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” – a bill that finally allowed gay sailors and soldiers to serve openly – but

he also supported a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. Never mind that such a bill would have contradicted the local control that conservatives claim to favor.

If his homophobia put him in close alliance with Vice President-elect Mike Pence, his views on immigration gave him common cause with Trump.

Sessions has battled ferociously against every effort to enact comprehensive immigration reform over the last two decades. After the Senate passed an immigration reform proposal in 2013 over his objections, Sessions distributed a booklet to House Republicans to help them defeat the bill. It never passed Congress.

And let’s be clear about this: Sessions is skeptical toward even legal immigration. He introduced an amendment to the 2013 bill to curb legal admissions to the country, claiming that Silicon Valley executives have lied about a shortage of U.S.-born engineers and scientists.

Mother Jones magazine quoted a Democratic staffer who said that Sessions and his aides “viewed this much more as a fight for the soul and identity of America as they knew it, rather than one of policy disagreements.” In other words, they were battling against the browning of America.

But those whites who find Sessions’ xenophobia comforting should beware: They might learn that he has some unpleasant surprises in store for some of them, too.

As just one example, Sessions has exhibited outdated views on marijuana.

While President Obama chose to look the other way as states began to legalize it, Sessions would probably start using federal law to prosecute users.

In a speech from the floor of the Senate earlier this year, Sessions said: “You can’t have the president of the United States of America talking about marijuana like it is no different than taking a drink. ... It is different. ... It is already causing a disturbance in the states that have made it legal.” He believes that “good people don’t smoke marijuana” and that it is “not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized.”

After several years of bipartisan agreement that the so-called war on drugs has run amok, Sessions seems poised to take us back to the era of “Reefer Madness.” That’s the justice of a zealot.

A Trump pick who declares ‘this land is your land’

By almost every measure for the incoming Trump administration, Ryan Zinke, the president-elect’s pick to run the U.S. Department of Interior, has the perfect resume.

He’s a former commander in the Navy’s Seal Team Six special-forces branch which, among other things, took out Osama bin Laden. He’s the lone congressman from Montana, where the Interior Department figures large because it owns significant swaths of land used for grazing and mining. And Zinke is all for developing and exploiting resources on public lands, earning him a lifetime score of just 3 out of 100 from the League of Conservation Voters.

But for those who still embrace the goals of the Sagebrush Rebellion, a loose coalition of ranchers, miners, drillers, hunters, off-road enthusiasts, libertarians and anti-government die-hards, Zinke is a heretic. The reason is that he is an unshakable foe of selling federal lands or

transferring them to the states.

Repeatedly, Zinke has joined Democrats in opposing legislation that would require the department he has been named to head to shed its vast real-estate holdings. In July 2015, he voted for an amendment to block funding of “extra legal ways to transfer federal lands to private owners.” Earlier in the year he voted against a Republican-sponsored budget resolution that would have set up a fund to do the same thing.

As Zinke, 55, explained it at the time, he grew up hunting and fishing in Montana and sees the value in making sure that what’s public stays public. This year he voted to block the sale of a couple of million acres of federal forest land for logging. Zinke has been so at odds with his party on this point that he resigned from the committee that drafted the Republican Party convention platform because, as usual, it included a passage about selling some of the 640 million acres owned by the federal government.

Wee Naturalists continues in the new year DAILY CHRONICLE University of Illinois Extension’s Wee Naturalist program will continue in the new year.

Every first Saturday of the month, starting Jan. 7 and running through May, the extension staff along with the DeKalb County Master Naturalists will offer this nature program for children ages 5 to 7.

The group will meet the instructors at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods

Forest Preserve at 10:30 a.m. and the program will be approximately an hour to an hour and a half each visit. Russell Woods Forest Preserve is located on IL Route 72 approximately one mile west of Genoa.

Every month will be a different theme and each child will get a nature passport to have stamped showing which programs they attended. The passport also serves as a reminder for what they learned at each visit. The program will include a lesson

with an activity, a related story, a craft, and a hike in Russell Woods. Each child needs to be with an adult or guardian for the program. The fee is $3 a child and no charge for the attending adult.

The children will learn about birds, snow, tracks, hibernation, food from nature, frogs and toads, and flowers. On Jan. 7, the program topic is tracks.

Veterans share stories in video project DAILY CHRONICLE Very often, especially when we see family around the holidays, people often say they should sit down with their relatives and record their stories.

Larry Forsberg, after organizing the Veterans Day program at Sycamore High School for several years, recently acted on this idea and made the time to interview three veterans and shared the finished product as part of this year’s Veterans Day program at SHS. He will talk about this project and show the video as part of the Sycamore History Museum’s January brown bag lunch Thursday.

The video includes the story of three veterans: Ralph Sherman Sr., Jared Tansley and Navy Capt.

James Cole, retired. Another important part of the story is the partnerLarry ship with Sycamore High Forsberg School’s Spartan TV, which produced the video under the direction of Ralph Helm.

Sherman and Forsberg have been friends for years as Sherman was the first president of Kishwaukee Kiwanis.

His son is the owner of Ralph’s Car Wash in Sycamore.

Tansley is in the U.S. Army and in

2015 was awarded the honor of Soldier of the Year. Tansley graduated from Sycamore High in 2011, and is stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Cole was in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps for more than 20 years. He served with forward combat units as an emergency medical doctor. He and his family live in Sycamore and he is a surgeon at Swedish-American Hospital in Rockford.

NIU forward, on scoring 85 points in the conference opener a 19-5 run later in the quarter to go into the half up, 41-26. The Huskies’ lead grew to 23 early in the third, but NIU had to hold off a brief EMU rally. The Eagles pulled to within eight with 1:26 left but got no closer.

The defense dominated the second quarter for the Huskies, allowing just 11 points to the Eagles, who shot 21 percent in the quarter. Coach Lisa Carlsen said the Huskies not only were able to start forcing and scoring off turnovers, but pounded the boards, too.

“Well, I think it was evident Eastern was going to try and slow it down, and when that happens you have to be creative in finding ways to speed it up,” Carlsen said. “Once we rebounded, we could get out and go a little bit.

I thought that was most evident in the second quarter.”

It’s the fourth year in a row the Huskies have won their MAC opener, but that hasn’t turned into success in that stretch – they were last in the division after losing seven straight after the opener last year.

While the Huskies didn’t quite keep up their second-best in the nation 91.5 points a game, they were just six points off.

“It shows we’re still playing how we want to play,” Woods said. “In nonconference we were playing different teams with different styles.

But now we’re playing MAC teams. I think it’s good; it’s a pat on the back, and we’re translating that into conference and getting the shots we want to get.”

NIU forward Kelly Smith agreed, saying putting up 85 in the conference opener was important.

“It sends the message to teams in our conference – we started this season, we were ranked second to the last in the conference, and people weren’t expecting a lot of us,” Smith said. “I think playing the preseason (conference) games, we were playing tough teams. We were top five in the nation in scoring – first for a while.

Smith led the Huskies with 19 points, Mikayla Voight had 16 and Woods 15. Ally Lehman had 11 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists in just missing her third triple-double of the year. Phillis Webb scored 30 for the Eagles.

The Huskies return to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bowling Green.

“I think we’re going to step on the floor Wednesday against Bowling Green and play 40 minutes of the best basketball we can,” Carlsen said.

“We’re going to live with the result, then do the same Saturday. I think they’re very willing to face that type of mentality as the MAC season goes on.”

For a while to start the second half, the Huskies were able to fulfill their coach’s request.

A 13-2 run by the NIU men’s basketball team to start the second half was pretty much the difference in the Huskies’ 77-62 win over the Prairie Stars on Saturday.

“You come out at halftime and you challenge them,” Montgomery said.

“We were only up three. I thought we were playing to the level of our competition. Nothing against Illinois-Springfield, but I think we can play at a higher level. So we challenged them, like we did at the beginning of the game, to

The Huskies (8-5) scored the first 10 points of the second half – including four each by Marin Maric and Dontel Hightower – and then after a bucket by the Prairie Stars (5-7), Austin Pauga drained a 3-pointer to give the Huskies a 14-point lead.

Springfield had the lead as late as the 7:31 mark of the first half, going up, 24-22. NIU pushed the lead to eight shortly before the end of the half, but the Prairie Stars got it down to 34-31 at the half.

“It’s hard to pull away if you’re not making shots,” Montgomery said. “I thought we got good shots, we got it up to 17, and we just couldn’t get the knockout punch on them.”

The game was the last for the Huskies before they start play in the Mid-American Conference, heading to Miami for a 6 p.m. tipoff Tuesday.

“We shouldn’t have let that team score that many points on us, but it’s OK; we found a way to win,” Maric said. “We’re focused on Miami of Ohio more on them tonight, but overall I’m pretty happy.”

DeKALB – Eleven days without a game resulted in a sluggish start for the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team.

In the second and third quarters, it was back to high-scoring business as usual.

After a rough shooting start, Northern Illinois heated up and held off a late rally by Eastern Michigan for an 85-73 win at the Convocation Center.

“I think we haven’t played in two weeks. It kind of took everyone a little time to get back into the rhythm,” NIU guard Courtney Woods said.

Bears have lots of holes to fill

It’s hard to read too much into the Bears’ 38-10 Week 17 thumping at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings.

Look at the 5-10 record of road teams Sunday and in particular the 1-7 record of road teams with no chance to make the playoffs. Only the Arizona Cardinals beat the hapless Los Angeles Rams.

Expecting anything more of the Bears in Minneapolis than what you saw Sunday was naive. We did however learn a few more things about this ballclub.

The Bears can bring Matt Barkley back to compete for the backup quarterback job in 2017 if they like, but it’s really not necessary.

In his six starts, Barkley’s final 2016 stats line – 129 for 216 passing, 59.7 percent completion rate, 1,611 yards, 7.4 yards an attempt, eight touchdowns, 14 interceptions, 68.3 passer rating – makes him the NFL’s lowest-rated quarterback with six or more starts.

Even Ryan Fitzpatrick snuck ahead of him, finishing with a 69.5 passer rating.

Barkley was better than anyone expected in his first three starts, but he was worse than we may have imagined in the last three, and it’s time to move on.

If Jay Cutler still is here, they should bring back Connor Shaw and some new blood, a veteran and a rookie and let them all compete.

If Cutler is gone, they should bring back Brian Hoyer and Shaw to compete with another veteran and at least one rookie.

There is no way the Bears should release Cutler before the 2017 draft if they’ve decided to move on.

With as many teams needing quarterback help as there is, it seems certain some team would give the Bears a fifth- or sixth- or at least a seventh-round pick for him.

After the draft, if they can’t get a pick for him, then they can release him.

But he is an asset, and at least for now

The Bears also have to do something to get better at left tackle.

With Kyle Long healthy next year, the Bears will be one of the best teams in the league at guard, center and guard with Long, Cody Whitehair and Josh Sitton, and Bobby Massie has been a different and much improved player since returning from a concussion in Week 12 against the Titans.

The Bears have a chance to have one of the better offensive lines in the league with an upgrade over Charles Leno Jr. Leno, who isn’t awful but appears to have reached his ceiling, and he just isn’t very good.

Unfortunately the only top left tackle who will be a free agent is Bengals Pro Bowler Andrew Whitworth, who just

turned 35 a few weeks ago, and the only top prospect in the draft is Alabama’s Cam Robinson, who comes with a few red flags on the character side.

How they fix left tackle could be as puzzling as the quarterback conundrum.

On defense, everyone knows the Bears need at least two quality safeties and two more cornerbacks, but one of the lessons from the Bears’ finale is the idea they are set at outside linebacker is fool’s gold.

Leonard Floyd showed some exciting flashes this year, but he also missed four games because of injury and was limited in several others, and with two concussions in the past six weeks, it is reasonable to be concerned.

The Bears’ other prize pass-rusher, Pernell McPhee, missed two games last season, was limited throughout the sec-

ond half of last season and missed his seventh game this season Sunday.

McPhee has given the Bears only 10 sacks in two seasons.

Willie Young is a nice piece as part of a group of four or five OLBs, and Lamar Houston may be back in 2017 or could be a cap casualty after his second ACL repair.

These Bears have the potential to be good in the front seven now, but they clearly are in need of another five-technique and a big-time pass rusher who can stay on the field is a need as well.

Bears fans can only hope that Santa swings through town one more time before September.

First-half run defense: The Vikings took the Bears apart through the air more so than the pass. The front seven helped hold Minnesota’s two running backs to 32 yards on 12 carries before halftime (2.7 yards a carry).

The season is over: The Bears don’t have to play again this season, their worst in 47 years.

They can get started on an offseason with big holes to fill on the roster.

Pass defense: Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford completed passes at ease, finding receivers, tight end and running backs wide open without much of a pass rush. The only time Bradford was hit, he completed the pass for a first down and the Bears were flagged for roughing the passer.

Protecting the football: After two weeks of interceptions and lost fumbles, things continued to spiral for Barkley. He threw two picks, both deep in Vikings territory, and lost a fumble, leading to his fourth-quarter benching for David Fales. Barkley turned it over 12 times in the last three games. Jeremy Langford lost a fumble, and Bralon Addison muffed a punt.

Covering Rudolph: Minnesota tight end Kyle Rudolph had 11 catches for 117 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown. Often, Bradford would find Rudolph up the seam or in the flat without a Bears defender nearby.

Barkley’s first interception: It ended a well-called and well-executed first drive that had gone 59 yards in eight plays. Barkley rolled out on a play-action and tried to force it to Alshon Jeffery. Xavier Rhodes intercepted the pass at the goal line, ending the Bears’ scoring chance. The Vikings went up 10-0 on their ensuing drive.

The muffed punt: Trailing by 10 points with 1:11 to go in the first half, the Bears had a chance to cut into Minnesota’s lead and then get the ball back to start the third quarter. Addison couldn’t catch Jeff Locke’s punt, and Minnesota recovered. The Vikings scored a touchdown five plays later.

Fales enters: After Barkley’s lost fumble, which resulted in a Vikings touchdown, Fox did what he said he had no plans of doing, which was put Fales in at quarterback. Seeing Fales make his NFL debut was quite the way for this Bears season to end.

What now?

Record: 3-13 What it means: It’s the worst record for the Bears since the NFL went to 16 games, and they will have the No. 3 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

What’s next: Bears players will clean out their lockers Monday, and general manager Ryan Pace and Fox will address the media Wednesday to close the season.

Jordan Howard: It’s fitting to end the season with Howard leading this category, as he did so often throughout his rookie campaign. He was the best thing going for the Bears on either side of the ball, thanks in part to great blocking, too, as he went off for 135 yards on 23 carries. Howard set the franchise’s rookie rushing record, finishing the season with 1,313 rushing yards.

Back-to-back blowouts end rough 2nd year for Fox

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com MINNEAPOLIS – The Bears finished the 2016 season 3-13, and it’s going to be difficult for them to point to the six losses within a touchdown as reason for optimism the way the season ended.

Sunday’s 38-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings caps a two-game stretch that saw the Bears get outscored, 79-31.

Coach John Fox’s team was supposed to be different than Marc Trestman’s 2014 Bears because they stayed competitive, but not on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Day. “Well, you go minus-10 [in turnovers] When you give the ball away that many times, the math doesn’t usually work very good,” Fox said after Sunday’s loss, marking his worst season as

a head coach.

Matt Barkley threw two interceptions and lost a fumble against the Vikings, who had their own issues over the past two months but jumped out to a 17-0 lead to finish their season 8-8.

ESPN and NFL Network reported Sunday that Fox would not be fired. Fox said he has not received assurance he would return next season, but he wants to remain head coach of the rebuilding Bears.

“You start something, you want to finish it,” he said. “I think compared to situations that I was in, chose to leave, this is a job I wanted. I think a lot of this organization. I think a lot of this city. I think a lot of the tradition of this team. … It’s definitely a job I want to finish.”

Jeffery not talking future: Alshon Jef-

fery had only one catch for 10 yards against the Vikings, which would be quite the way to end his time with the Bears, but he said the possibility that Sunday would be his final game never crossed his mind.

Expected to be the league’s top free agent at his position, Jeffery would only defer to general manager Ryan Pace and his agent when asked whether he wanted to return.

“As of right now, I’m a Chicago Bear,” he said. “It’s a business at the end of the day. Like I said, I’m a Chicago Bear.”

Jeffery did set the bar high for 2017 if he remains a Bear.

“I guarantee we’ll win the Super Bowl next year,” he said. “We had a lot of injuries. I don’t think a team in the league had as much injuries as us.”

Futility in takeaways: Cre’Von LeBlanc’s interception saved the Bears from setting the NFL record for fewest forced turnovers in a season. They tied the mark set by Baltimore in 1982 and beat last year’s franchise-low total by six.

Quick hits: Tracy Porter overslept and did not start, Fox said. The veteran cornerback had started every other game but did play a full 16-game season for only the second time in his career. … Receiver Cameron Meredith had 61 yards receiving and finished the year as the team’s leader in receptions and receiving yards. … Linebackers Leonard Floyd (concussion) and Pernell McPhee (shoulder) were inactive. With Floyd out, the Bears did not have a single firstround draft pick on the field. The Vikings had eight.

Packers top Lions to win division; both make playoffs with Redskins loss The ASSOCIATED PRESS DETROIT – Aaron Rodgers threw three of his four touchdown passes in the second half, lifting the Green Bay Packers to an NFC North-winning 31-24 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday night.

The Packers (10-6) closed the regular season with six straight wins to win the division for the fifth time in six years. Rodgers will lead fourth-seeded Green Bay at home Sunday against the fifth-seeded New York Giants in an NFC wild-card game.

Detroit (9-7) dropped its last three games but will be in the playoffs for the second time in three years with coach Jim Caldwell because the Giants beat the Washington Redskins earlier in the day. The sixth-seeded Lions will play at third-seeded Seattle on Saturday night in a wild-card game.

Patriots 35, Dolphins 14: At Miami Gardens, Florida, Tom Brady threw for 276 yards and three scores, and New England (14-2) clinched home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs by beating Miami (10-6). New England scored on a 69-yard fumble return by linebacker Shea McClellin.

The Dolphins already had earned an AFC wild-card berth. They play their first postseason game since 2008 next Sunday.

Steelers 27, Browns 24 (OT): At Pittsburgh, Steelers backups assured Cleveland of the top pick in the 2017 draft.

Landry Jones hit Cobi Hamilton with a 26-yard touchdown with 2:57 left in overtime. The Browns (1-15) took

a lead on Cody Parkey’s 34-yard field goal with 7:17 remaining in the extra session.

The Steelers (11-5) will host Miami in the wild-card round next weekend.

Jets 30, Bills 10: At East Rutherford, New Jersey, Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes in what was likely his final game for New York.

Despite a 5-11 record, the Jets are making no changes in leadership.

The Bills (7-9) also face some uncertainty this offseason after firing coach Rex Ryan earlier in the week and elevating offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn to the interim role. Two other people with direct knowledge of the situation told the AP before the game that Lynn is the clear favorite to take over the job permanently.

Titans 24, Texans 17: At Nashville, Tennessee, Houston quarterback Tom Savage started for the AFC South champions and left in the second quarter to be evaluated for a concussion and was cleared. He took a snap to kneel down on the final play of the first half and was diagnosed with a concussion after being re-evaluated at halftime in a loss to Tennessee (9-7).

Houston (9-7) will host an AFC wildcard game next weekend, possibly with uncertainty at quarterback.

Eagles 27, Cowboys 13: At Philadelphia, Tony Romo threw his first touchdown pass in almost 14 months, and the playoff-bound Cowboys played it safe.

Dallas (13-3) locked up the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs when the Eagles (7-9) beat the Giants on Dec. 22. So Dak

Prescott played only two series and Ezekiel Elliott watched from the sideline.

Buccaneers 17, Panthers 16: At Tampa, Florida, Jameis Winston threw for 202 yards and one touchdown, and Tampa Bay (9-7) broke up Cam Newton’s 2-point conversion throw in the closing seconds to beat Carolina (6-10) for its first winning season in six years.

Winston became the first player in NFL history to start his career with consecutive 4,000-yard seasons.

Colts 24, Jaguars 20: At Indianapolis, Andrew Luck threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jack Doyle with 9 seconds left to beat Jacksonville (3-13). Indy (88) went 75 yards in 84 seconds with no timeouts to avoid its first losing season since 2011, sending retiring linebacker Robert Mathis out with a win.

Bengals 27, Ravens 10: At Cincinnati, Andy Dalton completed his first 10 passes, one for a touchdown, and Rex Burkhead ran for a pair of scores in the Bengals’ fifth straight win at home over the Ravens. Cincinnati (6-9-1) missed the playoffs for the first time in six years.

Baltimore (8-8) failed to reach the playoffs for the third time in four years.

Giants 19, Redskins 10: At Landover, Maryland, facing an opponent with nothing to play for, Washington (8-71) blew its chance to make the playoffs with an uninspired loss to New York (11-5).

Chiefs 37, Chargers 27: At San Diego, Alex Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and Kansas City (12-4) clinched the AFC West title and

a first-round playoff bye in perhaps the final NFL game in San Diego. The Chiefs took the division with the win and Oakland’s loss at Denver.

San Diego (5-11) fired coach Mike McCoy after the game.

Broncos 24, Raiders 6: At Denver, Oakland lost its latest starting quarterback, Matt McGloin, to a shoulder injury, then lost to a team with nothing to play for.

Several Denver players said coach Gary Kubiak will be stepping down for health reasons. The Broncos finished 9-7.

The Raiders (12-4) squandered the AFC West title and the first-round bye that went with it, falling to the No. 5 seed. They will play at Houston on Saturday.

Falcons 38, Saints 32: At Atlanta, Matt Ryan bolstered his MVP credentials with a brilliant first half, throwing four touchdown passes to secure a firstround playoff bye for Atlanta (11-5) in a victory over New Orleans (7-9). Atlanta is seeded second in the NFC to Dallas.

Seahawks 25, 49ers 23: At Santa Clara, California, Russell Wilson threw for 258 yards and a touchdown, and Seattle (10-5-1) rallied from an early 11-point deficit to beat San Francisco (2-14). The 49ers fired coach Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke after the game.

Cardinals 44, Rams 6: At Los Angeles, Carson Palmer threw touchdown passes to Jeremy Ross, Darren Fells and Larry Fitzgerald, and Arizona (78-1) wrapped up a frustrating season be defeating Los Angeles (4-12).

“We’re used to a regimented schedule,” he said. “You’ve just got to think positively about it all. Everything’s different. You know where you warm up in every building, but here you don’t.

Joel Quenneville downplayed any concerns about the start times, noting that the Hawks have played games at 11:30 in the morning, the middle of the afternoon, 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and even 8:45 p.m. in the postseason.

“If it starts at noon, it’ll be great,”

Quenneville said. “If it doesn’t, both teams will adapt the same way.”

A pregame soccer game is a common part of the warmup routine for many players. Crawford said he hadn’t joined in one of them in 10 years, but might on Monday if he needs to stay loose. Whatever it takes. Because while it’s all fun and games, it’s also two big points against a heated division rival.

“When it comes down to it, it’s a serious game,” Andrew Desjardins said.

“It’s our livelihood, it’s our job. But you still want to have fun with it. You still want to enjoy this game. It’s still hockey and you still want to have fun with it.”

BULLS ANALYSIS

Time for Bulls to admit Rondo mistake and consider moving on

jcowley@suntimes.com Rajon Rondo remaining in a Bulls uniform is not going to have a happy ending.

At least not like it is now for the 11-year veteran, sitting on the bench behind Michael Carter-Williams and Jerian Grant.

That’s why it might be time for the front office to borrow a mirror since they obviously don’t have one of their own, and come to the realization that yet another misstep in trying to rebuild this franchise has been made.

Rondo and the Bulls just aren’t a fit if the 30-year-old is not a starter.

A third loss to Milwaukee on Saturday in just the last month was another reminder that the Bulls are both unathletic and a collection of poor outside shooters. Maybe, just maybe, weaknesses that the front office should have noticed a few years

ago rather than in the last few weeks.

Either way, the Rondo signing was always a curious one, especially with Fred Hoiberg’s offense predicated on space and pace. Yes, Rondo brought the pace at times, but has never scared any opposing defense from the outside. Ever.

So why do it in the first place?

Desperation is a funny thing, and once the marketing-first Bulls were hearing a bunch of negativity from corporate sponsors following the 2015-16 season, well, signings like Rajon Rondo happen.

Before putting pen to paper, however, Rondo had a sit-down with Hoiberg, watched film together, and agreed that it was an offense that Rondo could adapt to. Reading between the lines, it now sounds like Rondo is dealing with some broken promises along the way.

“I’m coming off a pretty good year [in Sacramento],’’ Rondo said, when asked when he felt the disconnect

between himself and the coaching staff started. “I knew coming here and playing with Dwyane [Wade] and Jimmy [Butler] things were going to be a little different. That was OK with me. Fred and I talked in the beginning, said I would be allowed to call a lot of the plays. Like I said, the flow of the game and throughout the season things may change. Fred and I spoke earlier and we talked about it.’’

So basically the keys to the car that were handed to Rondo back at the start of training camp and into the start of the regular season have been revoked.

What Rondo seems to have an issue with is he seems to be the scapegoat in all of this.

His job is to push the ball, but it’s hard to run with thrust when more often than not he finds himself having to plead with slower teammates to “run with me.’’ Again, another major misstep in the rebuild of this team.

Flying up the court is one thing.

Having to fly up the court while trying to push several boulders along the way, well, no wonder Hoiberg told Rondo that he looks slow the last few weeks.

Rondo indicated that he would expect the organization to move him elsewhere if this is the plan for him the remainder of the season, but here’s the rub: Because of his reputation, there is likely a very small trade market for Rondo at this point.

The Bulls signed him to a twoyear, $28 million deal with a partial $3 million guarantee for next season.

It might be time for Gar/Pax to grab some salt and pepper, and prepare to eat the rest of that deal.

Rondo said he would play the role of good teammate for now, but how long will that really last? More locker room drama is the last thing this franchise needs.

ST. LOUIS – Hockey players are notorious creatures of habit, particularly on game days. Everything is always the same – the wakeup, the breakfast, the morning skate, the nap, the pregame meal, the warmup routine, the game itself. It rarely, if ever, varies.

There’s the home routine, and the road routine.

There most definitely is not a rain-delay routine.

So, no, the Blackhawks aren’t quite sure what they’ll do on Monday if they’re sitting around Busch Stadium waiting for the rain to stop falling and the Winter Classic to begin.

“I don’t know,” Corey Crawford said. “Batting cages, maybe?”

There is rain in the forecast for Monday, but the amount, duration and certainty have been changing on almost an hourly basis. The 2011 Winter Classic at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field was moved from an afternoon start to the evening the night before. With the uncertainty about Monday’s forecast, and fog and rain possible even in the evening, the Hawks and Blues might not be so lucky.

So it could make for a long day, either at the stadium or back at the hotel. The Hawks are the league’s most

experienced outdoor team; they have played outdoors in the freezing cold, in the snow, in the sun and in the wind.

But they haven’t dealt with anything like this.

So while Patrick Kane knows not to dress too warmly no matter how cold it might be, and that the wind plays a bigger role than a first-timer might expect, and that if it’s too cold, the ice will chip and the puck will bounce in unpredictable fashion, even he is facing some uncertainty going into his fifth outdoor game.

“It’s one of the cool things about this time around – you don’t really know what’s going to happen,’ Kane said with a chuckle. “You don’t really know how to prepare for it. Either way, once you get out there, it’s going to be fun and you’re going to be just playing hockey like any other day or regular game.”

A lengthy delay is the worst-case scenario, of course, and if the NHL can avoid it, it will. The Hawks at least got to scout Busch Stadium on Sunday.

They practiced on the rink, enjoyed a family skate afterward and started to get the lay of the land in the bowels of the stadium, discovering weight rooms, batting cages and all sorts of other facilities that few hockey arenas have – especially for visiting teams.

CHAMAPAIGN – Malcolm Hill scored 20 points to help Illinois escape with a 75-70 win over Ohio State on Sunday night.

Tracy Abrams added 16 points and Leron Black grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds for Illinois.

Hill drove to his left for a layup to give the Illini a 71-67 lead with 55 seconds left. Jalen Coleman-Lands and Abrams each made two free throws from there to seal it.

Illinois (11-4, 1-1 Big Ten) looked like a different team against the Buckeyes, making stops and going on runs to help its lead. The Illini built a lead that reached as much as 15 points in the latter part of the first half after the Buckeyes went through a couple of scoring droughts.

The Illinois bench outscored Ohio State’s, 25-9, led by big men Michael Finke and Maverick Morgan with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

JaQuan Lyle led Ohio State (10-4, 0-1 Big Ten) with 26 points.

St. John’s 79, DePaul 73: At Rosemont, Marcus Lovett scored 22 points and St. John’s defeated DePaul to start 2-0 in Big East play for the first time since 2010-11.

The Red Storm (8-7, 2-0) followed up their win over No. 13 Butler by beating the Blue Demons (7-8, 0-2), who lost by three points to top-ranked Villanova in their Big East opener.

Shamorie Ponds added 15 points and Bashir Ahmed four 3-pointers and 14 points. Darien Williams had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Eli Cain scored 18 points, including

all of DePaul’s in a 7-2 run to get the Blue Demons within 68-66 with 3:19 left, but St. John’s responded with its own 7-2 spurt capped by two Lovett free throws for a seven-point lead with 43 seconds remaining.

Illinois State 81, Loyola 59: At Chicago, Deontae Hawkins scored 16 points, MiKyle McIntosh added 14 and Illinois State cruised to a win over Loyola.

Hawkins hit 5 of 7 shots, including three 3-pointers as the Redbirds (10-4, 2-0 Missouri Valley) won their third straight and sixth in last seven. McIntosh grabbed seven rebounds to help Illinois State to a 34-25 advantage. Paris Lee scored seven points to surpass 1,000 for his career.

McIntosh had 14 points in the first half when Illinois State made 6 of 11 3-pointers and opened a 39-28 lead.

Clayton Custer scored 17 points for the Ramblers (10-5, 0-2), who shot 41 percent.

Wichita State 100, Bradley 66: At Wichita, Kan., Landry Shamet and Darral Willis Jr. each scored 15 points to lead Wichita State to a thrashing of Bradley in a game where 16 Shockers played.

The game was never in doubt as Wichita State (12-3, 2-0 MVC) grabbed a 13-0 lead capped by back-to-back 3s by Markis McDuffie and Shamet.

A pair of Callum Barker free throws for Bradley made it 18-11 marking the last time the Braves would face a single-digit deficit. Austin Reaves’ 3 with 12:50 left before halftime made it 21-11 and the rout was on.

The Shockers proceeded to outscore Bradley 30-18 before halftime and led 5129 at intermission.

Darrell Brown led Bradley (6-9, 1-1) with 12 points and Nate Kennell had 10.

Proximity to freeway traffic linked to asthma in kids

Dear Doctor: We live near a freeway with a lot of traffic. Do I need to be worried about my kids developing asthma?

Dear Reader: This is a valid question.

Cars release a number of small particles into the air that can irritate the lungs. This particulate matter, in addition to nitric oxide and black carbon, has been associated with asthma. Children are more vulnerable to the effects of pollution because their lungs and immune system still are developing.

An analysis of many studies, published in the journal Allergy, found a significant association between traffic-related air pollution and asthma. The association was seen as early as the age of 1 and increased as the child became older. The rise in asthma as kids get older seems to be related both to structural changes that pollution creates in the lungs and also to the extent of time older children spend outside compared with younger children.

One other important aspect of asthma is it can be exacerbated by stress. Noise pollution and the danger of cars in close proximity may worsen asthma symptoms in children because they can create a more stressful environment. This is an important factor if your child already has asthma.

A recent study in Minnesota evaluated the number of asthma cases in the emergency room, in the hospital and in a clinical setting. The researchers then looked at the proximity of people to a major source of traffic. After taking poverty out of the equation, which in itself is a risk factor for asthma, the researchers found that, as traffic density increased, so did the number of asthma exacerbations, or worsening of

asthma symptoms. In this study, for every 10 percent increase in traffic density, there was a 15 percent increase in asthma-related visits to the emergency room, hospital or outpatient clinic.

Clearly, if you have a child with asthma, moving him or her away from traffic would reduce the chance of a severe asthma attack.

I understand your concern. It also is a societal concern. Despite the evidence linking pollution to asthma, the levels of pollutants that are associated with an increased risk of asthma are well below the guidelines from the World Health Organization.

This doesn’t mean if you live near a freeway, you have to move. The majority of children who live near a freeway do not get asthma. But if your child already is showing signs of asthma at a young age, then moving to an area with fewer pollutants is something you should consider, if it is at all possible.

It took many years for our society to accept the ills of secondhand smoke from cigarettes. When it did, smoking was banned from many public places, even casinos. It is more difficult to ban housing near freeways or heavily trafficked areas, especially when that housing already exists.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY mother-in-law passed away two Jeanne years ago from Phillips lung cancer. My father-in-law hasn’t taken it well. This year at Christmas he fabricated a letter and gifts “from her” for the grandkids, as if she had written the letter and bought the gifts before she passed away. He did it without my knowledge.

I am angry and upset I was made part of this lie without my consent. I refuse to lie to my daughter about this and plan to throw the letter away. My daughter is 6 and doesn’t seem to understand. My husband doesn’t think it’s that big a deal and doesn’t know what he can do about it. I loved my mother-in-law, but I’m tired of dealing with this. This is not the first strange thing my father-in-law has done. I feel like I get no support from my husband, who won’t ever say anything to his dad. Your father-in-law appears to be grieving deeply for his wife, and he may not be able to work through it without the aid of a grief support group or a therapist. You also should be aware a severe emotional shock sometimes can cause the onset of dementia in older adults.

If his strange behavior continues, then for his own sake, he may need to be evaluated by his doctor, and your husband shouldn’t ignore it.

Dear Abby: Over the years, we have helped out our daughters as much as we could. One daughter, “Doreen,” has needed more help than the others. She has four children who are near and dear to our hearts. They have been living with us the better part of their lives.

Doreen married a guy who is the father of three of the children. (I’ll call him John.) He’s in trouble with the law constantly and can’t hold a job. After we moved them all in with us, John decided he wanted to move back home to his family, so he packed up everyone and left. We told Doreen we no longer could support them financially, and if they wanted to move away, they would assume that responsibility.

Now she’s writing us saying they can’t pay the rent and their electricity is being shut off.

She wants us to “loan” them money. We refused. Now we no longer can talk to, text, write, Skype or communicate in any way with our grandchildren. The SIL says we lost that privilege. My wife is distraught. Can we fix this?
