‘Important’ stories are not always the most popular

“Why don’t you print some good news?”

People ask me that, in a sincere way, somewhat regularly. They just don’t understand the media’s obsession with negative, sometimes horrifying stories.

The thing is, we publish “good news” stories all the time. Any given edition of the Daily Chronicle generally contains more positive items than negative ones.

But people focus on those negative items – maybe because that’s what gets their attention.

I have a stock response when people ask why we write so much “negative stuff”: Because that’s what you want to read.

Sometimes, this is greeted with a scoff.

“Not me,” they say.

For all I know, they’re telling the truth. Maybe they’re that rare person who doesn’t read the story about the big fire or the sensational crime. I’m sure there are people out there who don’t like Snickers bars, the TV show “Seinfeld” or The Beatles, too.

But I don’t know too many of them.

In today’s edition, you can find our editors’ choices for the top local stories of 2016, and there are several positive and inspiring stories among them. But that’s a subjective list, which relies on people’s perceptions of what is “important.”

If instead we turned to an objective measure, like most unique online views, the list changes completely, and not in a nice way.

Here are the headlines of the 10 stories that had the most unique page views on Daily-Chronicle.com in 2016. I’ll bet you detect a pattern: 10. “Firefighters battle blaze at historic mansion in Sycamore” (Feb. 25) 9. “2 found slain after apparent break-in in Sycamore” (Aug. 16) 8. “Police locate vehicle taken from scene of Sycamore double slaying” (Aug. 25) 7. “Sycamore man facing child-sex charges dies” (Sept. 19)

In going through the list, it takes a lot of scrolling to finally get to anything remotely pleasant. The “good news” story with the most unique page views is a piece from Dec. 1, “DeKalb theater closed for major revamp.” That comes in about No. 36.

My sympathies are with those who were affected personally by these stories. As someone who covered all of them, the headlines jogged my memory about the details – but if I’d been asked to think back on the top stories of the year, they wouldn’t have sprung to mind.

Therein lies the age-old frustration – the stories that attract the most attention often are not the most important in the long run.

In 2017, we’ll continue to bring you the news, and you decide whether it’s worth clicking on or reading in the paper – or not.

Happy New Year, everybody. Let’s make 2017 the best yet.

assistant planner for the Metropolitan Planning Organization enforcement starting Dec. 19 and through New Year’s Day to watch for anyone who may be driving under the influence of alcohol or without a seat belt.

While data won’t be available until the added enforcement concludes, according to DeKalb police Cmdr. Steve Lekkas, analysis from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that New Year’s Day is the deadliest day for alcohol-related crashes.

Using the five most recent years of available crash data, it was found that an average of 70 people were killed in crashes every New Year’s Day where at least one driver, pedestrian or bicyclist had a blood alcohol concentration at or above the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

This gives Jan. 1 the highest percentage (62 percent) of crash deaths related to alcohol impairment from

2011 to 2016. The next highest is Independence Day, which had 49 percent of its crash deaths related to alcohol impairment over five years.

So what is the best way to get safely home for New Year’s?

A news release from DeKalb police reminds residents to always arrange for a safe way home for themselves or others they see who are unfit to drive, whether that be through a sober friend or family member if taxi and transit services are unavailable.

Lekkas said that the increased enforcement is not a huge effort as many officers work fewer hours over the holidays, but the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office also makes an effort to crack down on impaired driving during Christmas and New Year’s.

Illinois State Police and Sycamore police also participate in enhanced enforcement.

DeKALB – If you plan to be out and about celebrating on New Year’s Eve, your best bet is to have a designated driver who is not drinking, or make other arrangements so that driving is not necessary.

Northern Illinois University’s public transit, Huskie Line, will be closed until Tuesday because of winter break and TransVAC, a voluntary transit system, does not operate on weekends unless a rider calls ahead.

This has resulted in the development of a planning organization, the DeKalb Sycamore Area Transportation Study, to find ways to improve existing transit operations.

“We are limited as far as what we have, but we’re trying to figure out how to make public transit available for the entire week so there are safe options,” said Jessica Hyink, assistant planner for the Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Taxi services also are limited, as DeCab Taxi rarely rides after 8 p.m. and has fixed routes, usually to Elburn Train Station and out-of-town stops, and app-enabled ridesharing services such as Uber are not widely available.

FLOYD AMOS OLMSTEAD

SHARON S. ROLAND

Floyd Amos “Bud” Olmstead died at home in Ormond Beach, Florida on December 26, 2016 with his family by his side, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was 83 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Karen “Kay” (Farlow,) of 21 years; a son, Blaine (Keri) Olmstead of Statesboro, Georgia; two daughters, Lita (Mark) Swinson of Murrieta, California, and Barbara (Frank) Molnar of Wilburby-the-Sea, Florida; and a step-daughter, Michelle Keith, of Flagler Beach, Florida; as well as 6 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bud was born in a farmhouse in rural Genoa, Illinois on September 23, 1933 to Amos and Alice (Kurth) Olmstead. His great-grandfather, Caleb Olmstead, was one of the first settlers of the area in the 1800’s. Bud grew up on the farm, attending the one-room Olmstead Schoolhouse, as well as the Ney Grange School nearby, and then Genoa High School. In 1951 he joined the military as a Naval Reservist, then entered the Air Force in 1952, where after basic training in San Antonio, Texas he was stationed in Battle Creek, Michigan and eventually served in Korea during the Korean-American War, receiving National Defense and Korean Service Medals. In 1955 he met Dolores Marie Greenfield and they were married on September 24, 1955.

In 1956 he left the military and attended Electronics School. In the 1960’s he relocated to his wife’s previous home in Miami, and worked for the United States Department of Agriculture, until he returned to Genoa in 1969, where he rediscovered his passion for the farm life, and farmed alongside his father, Amos, until Amos’ death and his retirement. In 1988 he and his wife retired to Florida, where they lived in Daytona Beach until his wife’s unexpected death in 1992. In 1995 he found a second chance for happiness with his current wife, Kay, whom he loved dearly and who took care of him throughout his illness.

Bud was a firearms dealer for many years before his retirement in Illinois, an interest that he shared with his son until his death.

He was fascinated with the Olmstead family genealogy, and could trace his roots back to Richard Olmstead of county Essex, England, a pilgrim on the ship Lyon in 1632.

He loved to read Louis L’Amour novels and was a lifelong and avid exerciser, and despite the blindness that he struggled with for the past decade, continued to get his daily workouts in until his recent cancer diagnosis.

Arrangements are under the care of Volusia Memorial Funeral Home.

Sharon S. Roland, 57, of Ottawa, Illinois, formerly of DeKalb, died Tuesday, December 27, 2016, at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

Born September 28, 1959 in Robinson, Illinois, she was the daughter of Donald Sr. and Lela (Kirk) Shanks. Sharon attended DeKalb High School and delivered the Daily Chronicle for 5 years.

She is survived by her children Jason (Erin), Adam and Amy; four grandchildren; her parents of DeKalb; her brother Jim Shanks of DeKalb; her sister Linda (David) Nortrup of Arizona; her fiancé Ross Hauge of Ottawa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother Donald “Bo” Shanks Jr. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m.

Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb with Terry Soltow officiating.

Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services, Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Douglas E. Schedin, 47, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Thursday, December 22, 2016, at his home.

Born May 21, 1969, he was the son of Lester F. and Carol A. (Cooper) Schedin. Douglas was a graduate of Kaneland High School Class of 1987 and was a laborer working in the concrete business for several years.

He is survived by his children, Caitlyn, Tanner and Addison and his children’s mother Amanda Schedin all of Elburn; his mother Carol Schedin of Dekalb; one sister Deborah (James) Ruchti of Cortland; two nieces Carmen (Patrick) Gary of Kingston and Jessica (R. J.) Bathey of Sycamore.

The memorial service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2017, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb with the Rev. Ray Krueger officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until the time of services, Monday at the funeral home.

A

judge’s decision to set aside the conviction of Jack D. McCullough in the 1957 murder of Maria Ridulph – at the urging of the county’s top prosecutor – tops the list of local stories this year.

The stunning reversal of a historic conviction leads a list that includes the removal of one of the county’s top educators amid scandal, a terrible double-homicide, and inspiring stories of bravery and a government boondoggle.

1. McCullough released

Jack McCullough’s conviction in the 1957 murder of Maria Ridulph of Sycamore was overturned and he was released from jail April 15.

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack, assisted by DeKalb County Public Defender’s office, worked to free McCullough, 77, after he became convinced that his predecessor in the office had convicted him using a false timeline for the crime and that an ancient phone record proved McCullough had an alibi.

Reactions to McCullough’s release after almost five years in custody ran the gamut from elation to fury. Maria’s surviving relatives, including Sycamore native Charles Ridulph, angrily denounced the decision, while McCullough’s relatives were relieved and called for punishment for those who had put him in jail.

Charges against McCullough have been dropped. Illinois State Police have said in court documents that there is a new suspect in the case. 2. Superintendent removed in DeKalb School District 428

In September, less than a month into the school year, Doug Moeller was placed on leave from his $199,600-a-year job as DeKalb School District 428 superintendent.

Moeller’s removal came after Michele Al- Doug bano, the new principal Moeller of DeKalb High School, sought and received a restraining order against him in Kane County court.

In seeking the order, Albano said that Moeller intimidated her with a gun and threatened her career when she turned down his advances. A grievance Albano filed with the district alleged sexual harassment. It said that after Albano tried to curtail a flirtatious personal relationship, Moeller became vindictive and caused the principal to fear for her safety.

The protective order was later dismissed, but Moeller has remained on leave from his job. He is under contract through the 2018-19 school year.

The district has hired Bradley Hawk as a part-time, fill-in superintendent.

5. Northern Illinois University enrollment continues slide

A disturbing trend continued at Northern Illinois University this fall, with a 5.5 percent enrollment decline that included a 20 percent decrease in freshman enrollment.

10. DeKalb County sober-living home plan falls apart

In April, with his heart failing, Ricky De La Cruz of DeKalb underwent successful heart transplant surgery.

De La Cruz, 18, was born with a heart defect where the left side of his heart was underdeveloped. His fight for survival became a rallying point for many in the community, with fundraising efforts including “Run 4 Ricky” T-shirt sales, and other cash donations made to help his family.

De La Cruz returned to DeKalb in July after a four-month hospital stay, and was greeted by a police and fire truck escort and 100 cheering fans lining his street.

8. DeKalb seeking demolition of downtown building

The building at 112-118 E. Lincoln Highway has been empty more than two years, but this year city officials signaled they had enough.

The year began with a bank that holds the mortgage note on the building suing owner Pat Looney for failing to maintain it, and then in October, city officials asked a judge to allow them to demolish the building.

Once home to multiple businesses including Otto’s Niteclub, the building has been empty since early 2014 when an overhead sprinkler pipe burst.

But pipes in the home froze over the winter, causing substantial damage, and it was discovered that the water main that served the property was ledbased and would have to be dug up and replaced.

In June, the county board voted to spend up to $75,000, along with $125,000 from the drug court program, to fix the home.

But even that wasn’t enough to salvage the home. Hanson said in December there were more needed repairs that would push the cost of the project “another $40,000 above available funding” and “there are no guarantees that the problems will end there,” according to the news release.

The quick action of nine DeKalb County first responders and a passer-by helped to save a toddler from drowning in July.

The girl, Alaya Ochoa, was 3 at the time. She was buckled in her car seat in the back of a Hyundai sedan that went over a bridge on First Street south of Route 64, outside Sycamore, triggering a frantic effort to save her.

The vehicle was overturned in 4 feet of water, and police, firefighters and Sycamore resident John DeNapoli were able to lift the vehicle and free the child, who was airlifted from the scene – and survived.

A month later, Alaya returned to Sycamore with her mother, Quaesha Johnson, for a ceremony that honored DeNapoli, along with five sheriff’s deputies and four Sycamore firefighters.

On the car ride from the City Council meeting to the Sycamore fire station that day, Alaya told her mother, “Mommy, I love them.”

The guide comes in response to public opinion polls that show Illinois consumers want lower cable and satellite TV bills.

“It’s obvious Illinois consumers are hungry for changes in the pay-TV industry, but reforms usually don’t come quickly,” CUB Executive Director David Kolata said. “CUB’s guide focuses on what consumers can do today to help reduce their bills.”

CUB, a nonprofit utility watchdog created by the Illinois Legislature, examined whether public polling sup-

ported consumer comments about cable service it had heard for decades.

In the fall, the consumer group conducted a series of Google Consumer Surveys from randomly selected Illinoisans ages 25 and older. Each question was asked independently and had at least 1,000 respondents among people surfing the internet to read online content.

The margin of error is no greater than 3.1 percent.

One of the surveys revealed that 75 percent of respondents with a pay-

TV service said their bills were too expensive.

Another survey found that 76.6 percent of customers who have “cut the cord” said they left their previous cable/satellite company because of high bills. Illinois consumers also said they strongly support a series of reforms in the industry that would amount to a “Cable Customer’s Bill of Rights.”

Ralph John Wolff of Palm Coast, Florida, formerly of Johnsburg, IL and Punta Gorda, FL passed away peacefully on December 20, 2016.

Ralph was born May 8, 1947 in Sycamore, IL to Melvin John Wolff and Violet May Smith.

He married the love of his life, Jayne Bombenger, on October 2, 1976. They were married for 39 years.

He attended DeKalb High School graduating in 1966.

Ralph was a proud veteran of the United States Army July 1966 - 1967. He was a private in the Vietnam War, as a Light Weapons Infantryman, earning the National Defense Service Medal, Sharpshooter Badge, Marksman Badge and First Class Gunner.

Ralph and Jayne made their home in Johnsburg. He cherished the summers spent on Lake Geneva, WI boating with his family and friends. Upon retirement, his family relocated to Punta Gorda, FL, enjoying the thrill and adventure of deep sea fishing and boating in the Gulf of Mexico. He had a passion for restoring classic cars, handyman jobs and loved the Chicago Bears. There was nothing he couldn’t fix or create. He was a loving father, mentor, loyal friend and someone whom everyone looked up to. He will be deeply missed by all.

He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer of Chandler, AZ; former wife, Jayne Bombenger Wolff of Chandler, AZ; Siblings, Cheryl (Mark) Scott of DeKalb, IL, Karen Lisafeld of McHenry, IL and Alan Wolff of Palm Coast, FL; Aunt, Ruth Wolff Nitz of Carlinville, IL; and many nieces, nephews.

Motivated by a federal consent decree, Quinn had wanted to close several developmental centers but succeeded with only Jacksonville.

The Tribune’s story is part of an investigation that earlier found at least 42 deaths linked to abuse and neglect in group homes or their day programs over the past seven years. The newspaper’s investigation prompted Human Services Secretary James Dimas to order widespread reforms to improve public accountability and streamline investigations.

Pence’s visit raises about $1M, draws protests

CHICAGO – Vice President-elect Mike Pence’s appearance at a Republican fundraiser in downtown Chicago drew about 150 protesters who chanted “Mike Pence go away!”

The Indiana governor spoke at a luncheon Friday. Protesters from several groups gathered outside.

Tickets for the Mike Pence fundraiser started at $2,700 a person. According to a Pence aide, the vice president-elect raised about $1 million for the Republican National Committee.

Among the members of the host committee were Gov. Bruce Rauner, state GOP chairman Tim Schneider and Republican members of Illinois’ congressional delegation.

Residents raise concern over hog facility

The Tribune’s investigation found that adequate funding hasn’t followed when residents are moved from large institutions to smaller group homes, which in theory give adults with disabilities greater opportunities to live and work in the larger community.

Illinois group homes have gone nearly nine years without an increase in reimbursement rates for staff wages.

“We’ve said all along the community system is grossly underfunded,” said Zena Naiditch of the disability rights group Equip for Equality. “It’s been grossly underfunded for decades.”

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration plans no institutional closures this fiscal year, which ends in June.

About 1,650 residents still live in seven developmental centers statewide. A nonprofit advocacy group, the Arc of Illinois, continues to lobby for closing at least six of them.

BERNADOTTE TOWNSHIP – Residents in rural western Illinois are trying to stop a leading U.S. pork producer’s plan for a massive hog facility.

Bernadotte Township residents sent letters to state agriculture officials alleging errors and omissions in Professional Swine Management’s plan for its 20,000-hog confinement, Runway Ridge Farms LLC., the Chicago Tribune reported. The residents said it didn’t account for nearby structures, wells and creeks.

Fulton County commissioners passed a resolution Dec. 13 urging the state to halt action on all new large confinements in the county until the Illinois law governing such operations is reformed. The resolution is only symbolic because state law doesn’t give local communities much, if any, power over the issue.

However, the resolution did catch the attention of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan. Her spokesman said the agencies involved in these issues should carefully consider residents’ concern.

“We think it is extremely important that residents are raising concerns about these operations,” the spokesman said to the newspaper.

Professional Swine is considering how or whether to respond to the opposition coming out of Bernadotte Township, and has put on hold construction of Runway Ridge.

Chicago anti-violence rally planned Saturday

CHICAGO – A Chicago demonstration honoring the hundreds of people who were killed in 2016 is planned for the last day of year.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, a Chicago priest, said crosses will be carried on Saturday for each of more than 760 people killed in Chicago. The demonstration starts at 11 a.m. on the upscale shopping district along Michigan Avenue.

Pfleger said he hopes the demonstration will put others into action to prevent violence in 2017.

The city of Chicago saw a surge in homicides this year.

City provides free rides for New Year’s Eve

CHICAGO – New Year’s Eve in Chicago once again brings the chance to ride buses and trains for free.

The Chicago Transit Authority said free rides will begin at 10 p.m. Saturday and run through 4 a.m. Sunday.

The CTA will increase the frequency of service on some popular routes that night and operate longer trains on most routes.

The free rides have been sponsored

by MillerCoors for several years. Organizers said it’s a safe travel option for people celebrating.

Riders shouldn’t use their fare cards during the free ride period because no refunds will be issued.

CHICAGO – The rush to close a large institution for adults with developmental disabilities during former Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration led to extraordinary strategies to move residents quickly and hide problems with an underfunded group home system, according to a newspaper investigation.

Russia, brushing off Obama, looks to Trump

HONOLULU – Stung by new punishments, Russia is looking straight past President Barack Obama to Donald Trump in hopes the president-elect will reverse the tough U.S. stance toward Moscow of the past eight years. In a stunning embrace of a longtime U.S. adversary, Trump is siding with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Whether Trump steers the U.S. toward or away from Russia upon taking office is shaping up as the first major test of his foreign policy disposition and his willingness to buck fellow Republicans, who for years have argued Obama wasn’t tough enough.

Now that Obama has finally sanctioned Russia over hacking allegations, Putin has essentially put relations on hold till Trump takes over.

“Great move on delay (by V. Putin),” Trump wrote Friday on Twitter. “I always knew he was very smart!”

He was referring to Putin’s announcement that Russia won’t immediately retaliate after Obama ordered sanctions on Russian spy agencies, closed two Russian compounds and expelled 35 diplomats the U.S. said were really spies.

Although Putin reserved the right to hit back later, he suggested that won’t be necessary with Trump in office.

Brushing off Obama, Putin said Russia would plan steps to restore U.S. ties “based on the policies that will be carried out by the administration of President D. Trump.” Not only would Russia not kick Americans out, Putin said, he was inviting the kids of all U.S. diplomats to the Kremlin’s New Year’s and Christmas parties.

“At this point, they’re trolling Obama,” said Olga Oliker, who directs the Russia program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The Obama administration said it had seen Putin’s remarks but had nothing more to say.

Trump’s move to side with a foreign adversary over the sitting U.S. president was a striking departure from typical diplomatic practice. In a sign he wanted maximum publicity, Trump pinned the tweet to the top of his Twitter page so it would remain there indefinitely.

Russia denies the U.S. intelligence community’s assessment that in an attempt to help Trump win the presidency, Moscow orchestrated cyber breaches in which tens of thousands of Democrats’ emails were stolen and later made public. Trump, too, has refused to accept that conclusion and insisted the country should just “move on,” although he has agreed to meet next week with intelligence leaders to learn more.

Notably, after the U.S. on Thursday issued a report it said exposed Russia’s cyber tactics, Putin’s aides didn’t offer any specific rebuttal.

Ambassador Michael McFaul, Obama’s former envoy to Russia, said while Trump has defined his top objective as “getting along with the Kremlin,” Putin has higher goals, including the lifting of economic sanctions and, ideally, U.S. recognition of Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

“Obviously, Putin’s not responding because he’s waiting for Jan. 20,” McFaul said in an interview. “He’s got these much more important objectives to him than getting into a tit-for-tat response with the outgoing administration.”

Trump’s warm outreach to Putin, combined with picks for secretary of state and national security adviser who are seen as friendly to Russia, have left hawkish Republicans with a particularly unpleasant choice: look hypocritical for backtracking on their own tough talk, or risk a public rift with their party’s new president.

Embrace the promise that 2017 holds

People have made New Year’s resolutions since ancient times.

For many of us, these resolutions are about self-improvement – being more generous, courteous, or living a healthier lifestyle.

Whether we stick to our resolutions or not, the sentiment behind them – that it’s within our power to make life better in the year to come – is a good one.

Sunday will mark the first day of 2017, and it is within all of our power to make the coming year a good one.

The beauty of a new year is the promise it holds.

The year to come will be unlike any other – just as 2016 was unlike any other.

This year, in particular, promises to be filled with change, both at the broadest world level down to the towns and families we live in, and even our own minds and bodies.

So much occurs in a year’s time that by the end, we forget things that have happened months earlier, until we are reminded of them in the annual “year in review” stories in newspapers and on TV. It can take less than a year for the improbable to become reality. In November, the Cubs won the World Series six days before Donald Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States.

What similarly improbable surprises might 2017 bring? Maybe this will be the year that Illinois’ Republicans and Democrats come together to address our state’s financial predicament.

Maybe 2017 will be the year we finally see the economic expansion that we have waited for since the Great Recession ended in 2009.

For many of us, this also will be the year we accomplish important goals and milestones in our own lives – be it losing weight, completing a degree, getting married, having a child or visiting a place we’ve always wanted to see.

There is no way of knowing just what this new year has in store for us and our communities. But it will begin filled with promise, and as 2017 unfolds, the Daily Chronicle will be there to tell the story one day at a time, as it has for almost 140 years.

Regardless of our individual situations, let us all resolve to meet the promise of this new year head on, and try to make it the best that we can for ourselves and those around us, from January all the way through to next December.

Sisson powers Barbs to 5th Senior has big third quarter in DeKalb victory

The DeKalb senior big man put together his best performance of the week to help the No. 5 Barbs in a 50-37 victory over No. 3 Schurz in the fifthplace game of the Chuck Dayton Classic on Friday night in DeKalb.

Sisson finished with 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting and had nine rebounds and two blocks in 22 minutes, but was at his best in the third quarter. He scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds in the period to allow DeKalb (9-3) to cushion its halftime lead with a 17-6 quarter.

“It’s the most consistent I’ve seen myself the whole entire year,” Sisson said with a laugh. “I thought our ball movement in the third quarter was really good. I felt like we were aggressive.”

A layup by Schurz’s Jaland Mitchell cut DeKalb’s lead to 25-19 a minute into the third quarter before the Barbs answered with a 9-2 run – including Sisson’s seven points – to put them ahead 34-21, and their lead never dipped into single-digits the rest of the way.

“There’s no question he dominated; he was the best player on the floor in the third quarter,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said of Sisson. “That really gave us a nice cushion.”

DeKalb senior point guard Cole Tucker added 10 points and four assists, while Angel Guzman scored a team-high 11 points for Schurz, which fell to 9-4 on the season.

It was an aggressive performance on defense for the Barbs, who held the Bulldogs to 27.3 percent shooting from the field in the first three quarters and 31.1 percent for the game. The Barbs built a 48-24 lead before Biancalana took his starters out with 2:20 left in the game.

Guzman scored all 11 of his points for the Bulldogs in the final 2:20 of the game.

The Barbs held an 18-9 lead after the first quarter, but their offense went silent in the second quarter – allowing the Bulldogs to cut it to 19-17 on a 3-pointer by Nehemiah Watson with 4:20 left in the half.

DeKalb missed its first nine shots in the quarter before Tucker drained

a 3 in the corner in the final minute to give the Barbs a 23-17 lead heading into halftime.

“Part of it was missing shots and we weren’t as aggressive,” Biancalana said. “A lot of it is passing on time and on target that leads to a rhythm shot and our passes were slow, they were off target, and I think that hurt our shooting quite a bit.”

The win over the Bulldogs on Friday capped a week in which the Barbs went 3-1 in their own tournament and

finished off a stretch of eight consecutive home games during December – they went 7-1 in those games. Now they will play eight of their next nine games on the road in January, including at Sterling on Jan. 6.

“We’ll focus on Sterling next week, and we won’t look ahead,” Biancalana said. “The biggest game on your schedule is the one we’re about to play. This team is hungry to win our third conference championship in a row, and that’s where our focus is.”

Two more close losses sting Barbs on Day 2

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Another close loss in the first dual match of the day Friday sent the DeKalb wrestling team into the consolation bracket where its struggles continued.

DeKalb responded to Thursday’s one-point loss in the last dual by again losing a close dual; this time losing by two points, 35-33, to Moline. The Barbs followed with a more lopsided loss to Notre Dame, 44-24, and closed the day against Two Rivers (Wisconsin) with a 36-33 loss in the seventh-place match.

The Barbs lost by a point Thursday night in pool play to Prospect. Moline went on to win the title with a 35-27 win over Plainfield Central.

“We battled hard today but didn’t come up with the results we wanted,” DeKalb coach Sam Hiatt said. “We went 0-3 today, but to show you how close we are, we lost by two points to Moline who (won) the finals. We lost to Prospect last night who is wrestling for third place. There are a lot of really good teams here. Two Rivers, the team

we lost to in the seventh-place match, came into this tournament ranked as the No. 5 team in Wisconsin. It’s frustrating to keep coming up short, but there are many positives to take out of this tournament.”

One major positive that the Barbs can take away is that Fabian Lopez went 6-0 in his individual matches. Lopez gained another three victories Friday after beating Moline’s Isaac Martinez by technical fall, Notre Dame’s Jake Curtin by technical fall, and Two Rivers’ Joey Bianchi by decision. Bianchi is ranked the second-best 120-pound wrestler in Wisconsin, while Lopez is ranked 10th in Illinois at 120 pounds.

“We knew today was going to be the toughest day with so many good teams here,” Lopez said. “I’ve been working hard for about 10 years, and I have a lot of experience with other teams as well. I work really hard in practice and I don’t ever give up. As far as the other guys on the team, we need to all realize that if we continue to work really hard in practice, we can be right up there with the top teams.”

DeKALB – For the second consecutive season, the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team heads into Mid-American Conference play with a 7-4 record.

This season, the Huskies hope things turn out differently.

A year after finishing in last place in the MAC West, Northern Illinois opens conference play against Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. Saturday at the NIU Convocation Center with the second-most prolific scoring offense in the nation.

“I think this year’s non-conference schedule is a little bit tougher and we’ve played some good teams and even the games we lost, we were competitive in them,” Northern Illinois coach Lisa Carlsen said. “We’ve been a lot more consistent in what we want to do.”

Carlsen has led the Huskies to a 7-4 nonconference record in both of her seasons, which is the first time Northern Illinois has had a winning record coming into conference play in back-to-back seasons since 1992-94.

The Huskies are averaging 91.5 points a game, which is the second highest in the nation behind Baylor (94.6), and have six players scoring in double-figures a game.

“If you look at those six kids, any given night any of them can give you 20,” Carlsen said. “It’s not like it was accidental. I anticipate those six that are averaging double-figures now will stay there. I don’t think that’s going to change.”

Lehman has already recorded two triple-doubles – the first player in Northern Illinois history to achieve the feat twice.

While the Huskies had a strong nonconference showing last season, they finished 4-14 in conference play and lost 94-52 at Western Michigan in the first round of the MAC Tournament. They actually opened conference play with a win at Akron, but lost seven straight to fall out of contention.

“We have to stay healthy,” Carlsen said. “We started out going to Akron and winning and then (Glenn) gets hurt, and then the next six, seven games we go on a skid.”

Eastern Michigan (5-7) is led by junior guard Sasha Dailey, who averages a team-high 19.1 points a game, along with junior Micah Robinson (12.0 points, 5.7 rebounds) and senior guard Phillis Webb (11.1 points, 8.3 rebounds).

The Eagles beat the Huskies in both meetings last year – winning 8780 in overtime in DeKalb and 84-60 in Ypsilanti – but lost several key contributors from the 2015-16 team.

Dynasty vs. outsider

ATLANTA – Alabama is very familiar with this role.

Washington? It’s been a while.

The Peach Bowl features one of college football’s greatest dynasties against the definite outsider in this season’s College Football Playoff.

The top-ranked Crimson Tide (13-0) is going for its second straight national title and fifth in the past nine seasons under coach Nick Saban.

At this point, it’s national championship or bust for Alabama.

A loss in Saturday’s semifinal game would make this season a failure.

“It’s the Bama way,” linebacker Reuben Foster said.

Washington (12-1) comes into the Peach Bowl with an entirely different perspective.

The Huskies wandered in the wilderness for much of the past two decades, playing in only one major bowl since Don James retired after the 1992 season and

slogging through a stretch of six straight losing seasons that included an 0-12 debacle in 2008.

Chris Petersen took over as coach in 2014 and struggled through his first two years, going 15-12. But it all came together this season as the Huskies overcame their lone loss, at home against Southern Cal, to claim the final playoff berth behind a trio of perennial national contenders that also included Ohio State and Clemson.

For Petersen, the return to prominence comes down a simple formula he looks for in every recruit: talent plus character equals OKG (Our Kind of Guy).

“We feel real strongly about the guy that we’re looking for that we think fits our culture, our style of football,” he said Friday. “There’s a lot of good players out there, and some of those guys don’t fit what we’re all about.”

Some things to watch for when the Crimson Tide takes on the Huskies: SEAHAWKS LITE: Saban said Washington’s secondary reminds him of the Seattle Seahawks.

That’s a bit of an overstatement, but the Huskies do rely heavily on a talented, experienced group that includes safety Budda Baker and cornerbacks Sidney Jones and Kevin King. If the defense can shut down Alabama’s running game, it might play into Washington’s hands. Washington has created 33 turnovers this season, more than any team in the country, including 19 interceptions.

KIFFIN’S INFLUENCE: Lane Kiffin is winding up his three-year run as Alabama’s offensive coordinator, a time that will be remembered for bringing the Tide more in line with the wide-open times.

While Kiffin doesn’t sound like he’s had a whole lot of fun working for the hardnosed Saban, it’s clear he was given the latitude to transform Alabama into more of a spread-like team. From Saban’s perspective, the willingness to change and adapt is the key to keeping a team on top. Kiffin will leave after the Tide completes its playoff run to become the head coach at Florida Atlantic.

Tigers’ Swinney looks to put a rare loss on Buckeyes’ Meyer

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Urban Meyer was giving the abridged version of the core values he has instilled in Ohio State football, the pillars upon which he has built the Buckeyes.

“You mean the game-day underwear, that’s not the key ingredient?” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney chimed in, getting a smile from Meyer.

“I’m not saying I don’t wear them,” Meyer responded.

Swinney and Meyer shared the

stage Friday morning for the final news conference before the second-ranked Buckeyes (11-1, No. 3 CFP) and Tigers (12-1, No. 2 CFP) face off in the Fiesta Bowl.

The 52-year-old Meyer has a resume few who have ever coached college football can match. No current coach who has at least 10 seasons of experience has a better winning percentage than Meyer’s .854. He has won three national championships.

At the beginning of this week in Arizona, Swinney compared Meyer to Notre Dame legend Knute Rockne and joked about how he needed to quickly read Meyer’s book to gain some insight.

Swinney, 47, talks about Meyer with reverential deference, but he is on the short list of current coaches who can claim Meyer-levels of suc-

cess. Clemson needed more work when Swinney took over during the 2008 season than Ohio State did when Meyer became coach in 2012.

But since 2011, Swinney is 68-14 (.829), including a victory against Ohio State in the 2014 Orange Bowl, one of only two postseason loses on Meyer’s record (10-2).

The only thing Swinney and Clemson have not accomplished during this run, the greatest in the history of the program, is a national championship. Deshaun Watson and the Tigers came up just short last year against Alabama. Watson, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, was fabulous against the Tide and followed it up with another spectacular season (3,914 yards passing and 37 touchdowns).

Weber hits 3, helps Knights hold off DeKalb

sports@daily-chronicle.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland’s Jenni Weber, who can be devastating from beyond the 3-point arc, was sitting on the bench after fouling out.

Morgan Weber, who isn’t nearly as much of a 3-point threat, was on the court looking to make a play, but not pursuing a 3-pointer with the game on the line.

This night was different, however, as Morgan Weber ended up delivering the biggest shot of her career for Kaneland on Friday during a Northern Illinois Big 12 East Conference game against DeKalb in Maple Park.

Trailing 50-48, her 3-pointer caromed off the back of the rim, went straight up, and then back down through the net to lift the Knights (12-2, 4-1) to a thrilling 51-50 victory.

DeKalb (3-13, 0-5) had a final chance with 2.5 seconds left, but Raquel Mills’ desperation heave from three-quarters court was off target.

“I didn’t know how much time was left or anything. I only heard (coach Ernie) Colombe yell to shoot it,” Morgan Weber said. “I was just going to throw it up there.”

Weber had taken a pass from Hannah Armin to set up the play, although that wasn’t what the Knights had intended to do. Jamie Martens was expected to go right, but instead went left into a crowd and that ended up leaving Weber slightly open to attempt the game-winner.

“The play didn’t go as planned,” Weber said. “But it’s tough at the end of the game with the defense.”

Kaneland led 23-16 at halftime, but the Barbs battled back in the third quarter.

DeKalb tied it at 30 on a 3-pointer from Uriah Hegwood with 2:20 left in the quarter, and then took a 33-30 lead when Hegwood banked in a 3-pointer with 59 seconds left.

The Barbs built their lead to as many as eight points midway through the fourth quarter, but couldn’t put the Knights away. They led 48-41 with 1:09 left, but a couple costly turnovers and then a 3-pointer from Jenni Weber with 33 seconds left cut DeKalb’s lead to 49-48.

Jenni Weber then fouled out, but Charlese Williams only split a pair of free throws with 14.6 seconds left to give the Knights a final shot for the win.

“It would’ve been nice for them not to get the bounce at the end like that,” DeKalb coach Elliot Whitefield said. “Losing isn’t something I enjoy, but the kids haven’t given up on the season. They’re playing hard and I really believe this is just the beginning for the girls as they continue to make progress.”

Jacki Rapp led the Barbs with 21 points while Williams contributed with 12 points.

Jenni Weber led the Knights with 15 points. Morgan Weber added 10 points and Grace Ringel added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

BEARS VS. MINNESOTA, NOON, SUNDAY, FOX

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush ground game – the Vikings rank 32nd in rushing yards and average gain a rush – plus he has one of the NFL’s shallowest receiving groups.

Stefon Diggs has 84 catches for 903 yards with a 10.8-yard average and three touchdowns. Kyle Rudolph has 72 catches for 723 yards with a 10.0-yard average and six TDs. Adam Thielen is third on the list in catches (68) while leading the team with 960 yards and a 14.1-yard average, plus five touchdowns. They are the only Vikings in the NFL’s top 70 pass catchers and none strike great fear in the hearts of secondaries.

Adrian Peterson won’t play and Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata haven’t gotten the job done.

So why are the Vikings five-point favorites despite the Bears pounding them, 20-10, on Halloween night?

Although its struggles the past 11 weeks, the defense still ranks second in the NFL in total defense and eighth in points allowed.

While the “D” has dropped off to 15th against the run and 17th in average gain per rush – which would seem to favor the Bears if they would take advantage of it – Minnesota is still fourth against the pass, sixth in sacks and sixth in turnover/takeaway ratio at plus-7, while the Bears are now 30th at an embarrassing minus-16.

Danielle Hunter, 22, a 2015 third round pick out of LSU, has emerged as the best young pass rushing end in the league with 12 sacks while sharing time with Everson Griffen and Brian Robison. Linval Joseph is still one of the best D-tackles in the game, and Harrison Smith, who’s nicked but should go, is one of the game’s top safeties.

The Vikings have not shown up the past two weeks in blowouts by the Colts (in Minnesota) and Green Bay. The question now is do they show up Sunday – because if they do, they win – or have they already gone home for the year?

Late magic runs out

mlazerus@suntimes.com RALEIGH, N.C. — Jonathan Toews is glad to see that the Blackhawks have been able to elevate their play late in games, allowing them to chase down leads and come away with victories.

He just wishes they didn’t have to do it so often.

“It’s something we’ve got to keep trying to hammer home,” Toews said.

“We’ve got to start trying to take over games right away.”

The Hawks couldn’t rally two nights in a row, losing to the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-2, Friday night, 24 hours after they rallied to beat the Nashville Predators. That momentum didn’t appear to make the late-night trip to Raleigh, and the Hawks will limp into Monday’s Winter Classic in St. Louis having lost four of their past five games.

Making matters worse, they could be without two of their top defensive forwards. Marian Hossa has missed four straight games and his status for Monday is up in the air. And Marcus Kruger left Friday’s game with an upper-body injury in the second period and is “week to week,” according to Joel Quenneville.

The Hawks actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Michal Kempny’s first NHL goal, a blistering slap shot at 6:36 of the first period. But it was actually another slow start in a season full of them.

The Hawks trailed 2-1 after the first period on rebound goals by Elias Lindholm and Lee Stempniak (off a Teu-

vo Teravainen shot) 65 seconds apart shortly after the Kempny goal. The Hurricanes were flying, and led 14-5 in shots midway through the first period.

Cam Ward did the rest for the Hurricanes, making big save after big save in the second and third periods, including point-blank stops on Andrew Desjardins, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Richard Panik, Duncan Keith and Vinnie Hinostroza. After a Patrick Kane turnover set up Jay McClement’s goal early in the third, Toews (two assists) banked in a shot off Hinostroza to give the Hawks life. But Ward shut the door from there “Sometimes you’re going to have nights like that, when the goalie’s making some big saves,” Hinostroza said. “We had a lot of chances. On another night, who knows, those could go in.”

It’s expected to rain Monday in St. Louis, possibly hard and possibly all day, depending on which weather service you check, putting the Winter Classic in jeopardy. NBC Sports president Jon Miller told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the game could even be moved to Tuesday.

“I think everybody’s kind of keeping an eye on that, but, like I say, it’s tough to forecast that,” Quenneville said. “Well see what happens.”

It wouldn’t be the first time the weather played a role in one of the Hawks’ outdoor games. It was too sunny during the 2015 Winter Classic at Nationals Park in Washington.

Until Sunday, when Washington came to town on Christmas Eve and left Soldier Field with a gift of a mustwin all wrapped up and topped with a big bow, these young and badly battered Bears showed up every week and gave it their all in spite of an entire M.A.S.H. unit overflowing with their teammates and an offense that stubbornly refuses to play to its strength.

Going to Minnesota at 3-12 and knowing the only reward available for a win is a short flight back to Chicago and a couple of months off to ponder the disaster this season has been before returning in March for the offseason program, there is little reason to assume success.

Teams that are 3-12 rarely win their final games on the road. But stranger things have happened.

Should we assume the Minnesota Vikings would be playing to lock up their first-round playoff bye had they not lost their future hall of fame running back and top three offensive tackles for the season, rather than trying to win only their third game in their past 11 tries after an 5-0 start?

Or should we ponder how the Vikings’ injury woes on offense explain the fall of a defense that was the best in the league through five weeks, but has been ineffective and regularly gashed on the ground in recent weeks?

Finally, and most perplexing, why did the Vikings secondary, led by its two most solid citizens in Terence Newman and Xavier Rhodes, allegedly revolt against Mike Zimmer two weeks ago when Zimmer is believed to be one of the most respected “players coaches” in the league?

I’m not sure how predictive of the outcome of the game they’ll be, but there are a couple things we do know about the Vikings: Unlike the Bears, the Vikings’ problems do not start at quarterback, where Sam Bradford has established himself as the man of the present and future. He has thrown for 3,627 yards, 19 touchdowns, only four interceptions and a 98.3 rating, and his 71.6 completion percentage has him on pace to break the NFL’s all-time record of 71.2 set by Drew Brees in 2011.

Rondo benched in loss

jcowley@suntimes.com INDIANAPOLIS – There was a benching, a loss, and now Jimmy Butler wants to make sure that there’s no “drifting away.’’

That’s the state of Bulls basketball after the 111-101 loss to Indiana on Friday night. A loss in which the Bulls (1617) fell behind by 14 points, leading to Fred Hoiberg benching veteran Rajon Rondo for the entire second half.

“We’re all in this together so we have to make sure [Rondo’s] mind is still with us,’’ Butler said afterwards.

“We know his heart is going to be, but we don’t want anybody drifting away because something like that may happen. We just got to stay in his ear, make sure he’s constantly still about this team because we still need him out here if we’re going to win games.’’

Something that hasn’t come easy for this team, as they dropped to 3-7 in their past 10 games now.

It was the second time in a week that Hoiberg benched Rondo, as he also sat him the entire fourth quarter Monday, and the coach again downplayed it as

more of what Michael Carter-Williams was doing well rather than what Rondo wasn’t.

At the time of this latest benching, however, Rondo was scoreless and put up a minus-20 in the plus/minus category through the first two quarters.

“I’m a veteran,’’ Rondo said of the decision. “It’s not going to determine that I’m not going to work hard. I’m going to stay in the gym every day. Lead these guys when I can, talk to my teammates. Be a professional.’’

Asked if he was given an explanation from Hoiberg, Rondo replied, “Negative.’’

Asked if he wanted one he said, “It don’t have to be a big deal. He’s the coach. He and [assistant coach] Jim [Boylen] made some decisions and that’s the way it is.

“It’s not life and death. Life is too short to be unhappy, and it’s part of it.

If I start [Saturday], great. If I don’t, as long as we get the win, that’s all that matters.’’

Hoiberg wouldn’t commit to Rondo as a starter against Milwaukee, saying it was a decision that would be discussed.

As to the question of carbonation being bad for your teeth, we need to talk about the carbonic acid we mentioned earlier.

While it’s true the process of carbonation results in the creation of an acid, it’s a very weak one. Plain bottled water has a neutral pH of 7. Carbonated water such as Perrier is only slightly more acidic, with a pH of 5.25. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), that’s “minimally corrosive.” Cranberry juice, by contrast, with a pH of 2.5, is considered by the ADA to be “extremely corrosive.”

So the good news is you and your family are on the right track with fizzy waters replacing sodas and other sweet drinks.

Just be sure to always read the labels.

If you see the words sucrose, glucose, fructose or corn syrup, you’re holding a sugary drink.

And here’s a bonus for weight watchers from a National Institutes of Health study: Young women who drank a glass of fizzy water reported feeling full and satiated.

Lastly, for those of you with kids who may have heard this urban legend – eating the carbonated candy Pop Rocks and then drinking a soda definitely will not make your stomach explode.

Dear Doctor: We’re finally winning the battle against sugary soft drinks in our home, but a family friend insists the sparkling water our kids are drinking instead is bad for their bones and teeth. Is this really true?

Dear Reader: First, congratulations on weaning your family off of soft drinks.

One out of every three Americans drinks at least one (and often more) sugar-packed soda or other sweetened beverage every day. This puts them at increased risk for serious health problems such as obesity, Type-2 diabetes and even heart disease.

Although in a perfect world we all would stick to plain water to get the hydration we need, the truth is that can get boring. It’s no surprise, then, that sparkling water, with its fizzy bubbles and wide range of flavors, has become a go-to replacement for people who want to cut back on calorie-laden sodas.

Sparkling water, which typically has no calories, is made when carbon dioxide gas is dissolved in plain water, a process known as carbonation. This results not only in the bubbles we love, but also creates carbonic acid, which gives fizzy water a mildly tart flavor. (We’ll get back to that in a minute.)

The concern voiced by your family friend, that drinking carbonated water weakens bones, quite possibly finds its roots in a study conducted in 2006. Known as the Framingham Osteoporosis Study, researchers tied the consumption of cola beverages to decreased density in the hip bones of older women.

But the operative word here turns out to be “cola.” Women in the study who drank non-cola beverages did not exhibit increased bone loss. The researchers concluded carbonation doesn’t damage your
