Rauner prepares for tough POLL race for governor in 2018

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS How would you rate 2016?

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner is loaded for bear.

We are two years out from the 2018 elections, and he deposited $50 million into his own campaign coffers. Why so much, so soon?

He’s sending a message.

Whatever Democrat considers taking him on will be attacked relentlessly.

In 2014, when Rauner was elected, he spent $65 million.

Rauner, an ultrarich venture capitalist, has money to burn. And the person it will scorch is whatever Democrat takes him on.

Mike Madigan, who heads the Democratic Party and is about as popular statewide as tooth decay, is busy recruiting liberal gazillionaires to meet the challenge.

There is Chris Kennedy, the son of the late Sen. Robert Kennedy, and then there is J.B. Pritzker, an heir of the Hyatt hotel fortune.

Both men, unlike Rauner, were born to great wealth.

It will be interesting if either of these fellows run. Somehow, I doubt it.

Why? Whoever challenges Rauner should expect to be attacked relentlessly. If you are a rich guy living a comfortable life, why would you put yourself through that? And it’s worth noting that neither Kennedy nor Pritzker have ever run for office before.

The interesting thing is that despite his loaded campaign coffers, Rauner is vulnerable.

First of all, midterm elections almost always favor the party that doesn’t hold the White House. And given the animosity Democratic voters hold toward Donald Trump, particularly in blue states such as Illinois, Rauner likely will be swimming against the tide.

It doesn’t mean he will drown, but it will be a tougher race than when he first captured the Executive Mansion.

And I make that statement reluctantly. Of all of the governors who have served in my lifetime, he comes the closest to matching my own libertarian ideology.

I want government out of my wallet and out of our private lives.

But Illinoisans are weary of the constant war between Madigan and Rauner.

Rauner views his election as a voter indict-

VIEWS Scott Reeder ment of the longtime political boss, who he blames for Illinois’ fiscal ills.

And he’s right for blaming Madigan. But Rauner has done a poor job of messaging about why he is engaged in this struggle.

I’ve covered every governor since James R. Thompson, and this administration has done the worst job by far of sharing its vision for the state.

Because of this, voters view this conflict as a personality clash between two egos rather than a conflict between divergent political philosophies.

Madigan is hell-bent on making sure Rauner has no successes to run on when he seeks re-election. And the people of Illinois are suffering for it.

Many voters have taken to viewing Madigan like mildew on the shower curtain. They don’t like it, but it’s hard to get rid of so they just put up with it.

While they might agree with much of what Rauner is trying to accomplish – term limits, independent redistricting and lower property taxes – they might view Rauner as the more expendable part of the equation in ending the strife in Springfield.

Yes, Rauner is vulnerable.

I anticipate the next two years of the Rauner administration will look pretty much like the past two. The state will fall further behind in paying its bills, and we will go four years straight without a state budget.

The majority in the Legislature will do everything it can to block any Rauner endeavor.

And don’t be surprised if state workers go on strike in the middle of this chaos.

Madigan, who collects power the way some grandmothers collect buttons, has every interest in continuing to stir the chaos. After all, Rauner is a threat to his power.

The deadline to file to appear on the April ballot has long passed, but some DeKalb County municipalities have more offices up for election than there are candidates.

Municipalities including Hinckley, Kingston and Maple Park are finding themselves short of candidates, while places including Kirkland, Genoa and Cortland will see contested races.

In Hinckley, no one filed to succeed James Roderick as village president.

Three four-year village trustee terms are up for election, but only one candidate has filed, appointed trustee Michael D. Constant.

In Kingston, incumbent Village President Jim Baenziger is seeking another four-year term, as are two incumbent village trustees, John “Jack” Fischer and Joe Hengels. No one filed for the vacant two-year trustee term.

In Maple Park, the entire Village Board is up for election, including the village president and six trustees. However, only four candidates filed to be trustees.

Incumbent President Kathleen Curtis is seeking another four-year term.

Brandon Harris and incumbent Lucas Goucher filed for four-year terms, while incumbent J.P. Dries filed for a two-year term and Kristine Dalton, currently serving a two-year term, filed to maintain her seat.

Although the deadline has passed for people to appear on the April 4 ballot, there still is time for them to run as write-in candidates. The deadline to file to run as a write-in is Feb. 2.

Other municipalities will see con-

tested races, such as Kirkland, where three candidates are vying to replace longtime Kirkland leader Les Bellah as village president.

Ryan Block, Harry Newberry and Trustee Wanda McMurray all have filed for a four-year term as the next village president.

Village trustee positions in Kirkland will see competition as well, as five candidates filed for the three four-year terms that are up for election. They are Ron Lieving, Sally Jones, Steve Devlieger, and incumbents Sarah Ziegler and Colleen Ford.

Several offices are up for election in Genoa, including mayor, city clerk and aldermen in the city’s four wards. All are four-year terms.

Incumbent Mayor Mark Vicary filed to maintain his seat, and Kim Winker filed for city clerk.

City Clerk Dennis Di Guido filed for 2nd Ward alderman.

Adrienne Costanza and incumbent Glennis Carroll filed for 1st Ward alderman seats.

Gary Eggleston and Courtney Winter filed for 3rd Ward, and Katie L. Lang filed for 4th Ward.

Cortland also will see contested races.

Incumbent town President Russell Stokes faces a challenge from Charmaine Fioretto for the office, and incumbent Cheryl “Cookie” Aldis faces Cherie Quillman for a four-year term as town clerk.

Three four-year trustee terms are up for election, and six candidates have filed, including Lucinda Brunner, Jim Walker, Richard Robins, and incumbents Mike Siewerski, Ben Haier and Chuck Lanning.

Veterans share stories in video DAILY CHRONICLE

Very often, especially when we see family around the holidays, people often say they should sit down with their relatives and record their stories.

Larry Forsberg, after organizing the Veterans Day program at Sycamore High School for several years, recently acted on this idea and made the time to interview three veterans and shared the finished product as part of this year’s Veterans Day program at SHS. He will talk about this project and show the video as part of the Sycamore History Museum’s January Brown

Bag lunch Thursday.

The video includes the story of three veterans: Ralph Sherman Sr., Jared Tansley and Navy Capt. James Cole, retired. Another imLarry portant part of the story Forsberg is the partnership with Sycamore High School’s Spartan TV, which produced the video under the direction of Ralph Helm.

Sherman and Forsberg have been friends for years as Sherman was the first president of Kishwaukee Kiwanis. His son is the owner of Ralph’s Car Wash in Sycamore.

Tansley is in the U.S. Army and in 2015 was awarded the honor of Soldier of the Year. Tansley graduated from Sycamore High in 2011, and is stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Cole was in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps for more than 20 years. He served with forward combat units as an emergency medical doctor. He and his family live in Sycamore and he is a surgeon at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford.

Because the primary audience was high school students, each veteran was asked these questions: 1. What they were doing before going into the military?

2. Why they decided to take a military path?

3. What they did when they were in the service?

4.Why they feel Veterans Day should be celebrated?

To find out the answers to these questions, join the Sycamore History Museum on Jan. 5 during the Brown Bag lunch.

The program begins at noon at the DeKalb County Community Foundation’s Freight Room, 475 DeKalb Ave. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Park board commissioner seats to be run unopposed

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – While some races for the upcoming April election will be hotly contested, including a fourway race for DeKalb’s mayor and a five-way run for Sycamore City Clerk, campaigns for open commissioner seats on the Sycamore and DeKalb park district boards likely will be uncontested.

Park board President Ted Strack and Vice President Michelle Schulz were the only candidates to file petitions for the two open positions in Sycamore’s Park District. Both seats are four-year terms.

The objection filing period for candidates ended Wednesday in both districts. Dan Gibble, executive director of the Sycamore Park District, said that no objections were filed for Strack or Schulz and that he filed the ballot certification for the candidates to the Sycamore City Clerk on Thursday.

DeKalb Park District Executive Director Amy Doll said that no objections were filed for Young or Grada either and she will be mailing the certification as soon as possible.

Red Solo Cup inventor Robert Hulseman dies

CHICAGO – Robert Hulseman, who in the 1970s invented the Red Solo Cup for family picnics only to see it embraced as the go-to beverage holder at college keg parties and football tailgates – and even the inspiration for a country music party hit – has died. He was 84.

The former president and chief executive of his family’s Solo Cup Co. died

Dec. 21 at his home in Northfield, Illinois, of health complications after a series of strokes, his son Paul Hulseman told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The younger Hulseman said his father never fully understood how massively popular the large red plastic cup became in pop culture. He said the cup was intended for families, and recalled being about 10 years old when he and his siblings helped their father choose the cup’s first colors: red, blue, yellow

and peach.

“That product was never intended for keggers,” the younger Hulseman said.

Country music star Toby Keith recorded a tribute to the party side of Hulseman’s invention in the 2011 hit “Red Solo Cup,” with lyrics extolling the plastic cup as “the best receptacle for barbecues, tailgates, fairs and festivals.”

The next line’s rhyme, referencing the male anatomy, embarrassed Paul Hulseman when he played the song for

his mannerly parents.

Cook board passed two new measures in October The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – At least one Cook County municipality has opted out of the looming minimum wage hike and paid sick time laws, and more communities could follow suit.

The Cook County Board passed two laws in October mirroring measures in Chicago. One allows employees to accrue up to five days of paid sick time each year, with some exceptions. The other incrementally increases the minimum wage to $13 an hour by 2020.

News from across the state Gang trial jury stalls on 1 count; to resume Tuesday

CHICAGO – Deliberating jurors at a major racketeering trial of the purported leaders of Chicago’s notorious Hobos gang sent a note to the presiding federal judge Thursday saying they are deadlocked on at least one count after four full days of deliberations.

The primary charge in the 10-count indictment is the racketeering conspiracy charge that applies to all six alleges Hobos leaders including purported boss Gregory “Bowlegs” Chester and hitman Paris Poe. Nine other stand-alone counts include drug and gun charges.

At the biggest gang trial in recent Chicago history, prosecutors told jurors the Hobos cultivated a reputation for brutality, once torturing someone with a clothing iron. Some witnesses were visibly nervous testifying and one refused outright to testify “for the sake of me and my family.”

The afternoon note Thursday doesn’t say which count the 12 panelists are stuck on, but it makes clear there is disagreement. And it at least raises the prospect that there could be a hung jury after three months of often chilling testimony and sometimes complex legal arguments.

If jurors remain deadlocked over coming days, the judge said he could give them a special instruction, known as the Silvern Charge, that uses firmer language about a juror’s duty to do their best to reach a decision. But Tharp said he’s “reluctant to bring out the canon at this stage.”

Thursday’s note was the clearest sign of jurors’ struggles to reach unanimity.

But there were some earlier hints of trouble. One juror, referred to only as Juror No. 49, sent a note to the judge at the end of the first day of deliberations, asking if he could be dismissed from the jury.

“For me to sit here for a week or more ... is a waste of my time,” he told Tharp in court later. After the juror said he thought he could still fairly judge the evidence, Tharp told him he was keeping him on the jury.

Prosecutors don’t oppose delaying Schock’s trial

SPRINGFIELD – Federal prosecutors said they don’t oppose delaying the criminal trial of former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock because they expect it to last as long as six weeks and include up to 100 witnesses.

A preliminary trial date of Feb. 7 was set when Schock was arraigned this month, but the ex-conAaron gressman has requested Schock a delay until July. The 35-year-old Republican from Peoria is accused of misusing government and campaign money for personal use and faces 24 criminal counts.

His lawyers argued more time is needed to study “voluminous” documents that could be used as evidence.

The U.S. attorney’s office for the Central District of Illinois filed its response Wednesday, saying it doesn’t object to a delay. Schock said he’s innocent and that any questionable spending resulted from “honest mistakes.”

Robbers target FedEx delivery trucks in Chicago

CHICAGO – One FedEx truck was stolen in Chicago and the driver of another truck robbed of packages in separate incidents.

Fines for ignoring railroad crossing gates double Jan. 1

CHICAGO – Metra officials are reminding motorists that fines for driving over railroad tracks while crossing gates are down will double Jan. 1.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a law in July that increased the penalty for disregarding activated gates and warning lights from $250 to $500 the first time. It doubles to $1,000 each time after that.

Officials at suburban Chicago’s commuter rail service said Illinois ranked second in the nation in 2015 for highway-rail fatalities. Operation Lifesaver reports up to 80 percent of train/car collisions occur at crossings with warning devices operating.

Republican state Sen. Karen McConnaughay of St. Charles and Crystal Lake GOP Rep. Mike Tryon sponsored the measure. They believe the risk of steeper fines will make motorists think twice before trying to race a train.

“In the interest of our country and its great people, I will meet with leaders of the intelligence community next week in order to be updated on the facts of this situation,” Trump said.

But Russian law bars the spy agencies from having assets in the U.S., and any activities they undertake would likely be covert and hard to identify.

“On its face, this is more than a slap on the wrists, but hardly an appropriate response to an unprecedented attack on our electoral system,” said Stewart Baker, a cybersecurity lawyer and former National Security Agency and Homeland Security Agency official.

The number of police killed in the line of duty rose sharply in 2016, driven by shootings of police around the country, most notably ambushes in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

From Jan. 1 through Wednesday, 135 officers lost their lives. Some died in traffic accidents, but nearly half were shot to death.

That’s a 56 percent increase in shooting deaths over the previous year.

Of the 64 who were fatally shot, 21 were killed in ambush attacks often fueled by anger over police use of force involving minorities.

“We’ve never seen a year in my memory when we’ve had an increase of this magnitude in officer shooting deaths,” said Craig Floyd, president and chief executive of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

“These officers were killed simply because of the uniform they wear and the job they do. This is unacceptable to the humane society that we are.”

In Dallas, a sniper attacked July 7 at the end of what had been a peaceful rally against police brutality. He killed five law enforcement officers

way to increase pay and save a failing police and fire pension. Former Chief David Brown, who became a national figure in the aftermath, was among those who opted to retire. And interim Dallas Police Association President Frederick Frazier said that morale is “almost nonexistent.”

It changed the perception of law enforcement. It reversed the roll after Ferguson. We were the pursuer and now, we’re being pursued.”

Less than two weeks after the Dallas attack, a lone gunman in Baton Rouge shot and killed three officers and wounded three others outside a convenience store in the weeks after a black man, 37-year-old Alton Sterling, was shot and killed by police during a struggle.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s Floyd said the impact of this year has been profound on law enforcement. Agencies are struggling to recruit officers to their ranks and those who continue to serve “talk about how their head is now on a swivel.”

With Trump’s victory, GOP hopes to overhaul Medicaid

ATLANTA – When President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January, Republicans will have the opportunity to pull off something they have wanted to do for years – overhaul Medicaid, the program that provides health care to tens of millions of lower-income and disabled Americans.

Any changes to the $500 billion-plus program hold enormous consequences not only for recipients but also for the states, which share in the cost.

Trump initially said during the presidential campaign that he would not cut Medicaid, but later expressed support for an idea pushed for years by Republicans in Congress – sending a fixed amount of money each year to the states in the form of block grants. Backers say such a change in the Medicaid formula is one of the best ways to rein in spending, but critics say big cuts would follow.

Currently, the federal government pays an agreed-upon percentage of each state’s Medicaid costs, no matter how much they rise in any given year.

Republicans have argued that states have little incentive to keep expenses under control, because no state pays more than half the total cost. Both House Speaker Paul Ryan and Trump’s pick for secretary of health and human services, Georgia Rep. Tom Price, want to switch to block grants.

Key questions facing Republicans will be how the funding is structured and how much flexibility will be given to the states.

“It’s exciting because you know it’s not going to be the same as it was, and it’s nerve-wracking because you know it’s not going to be the same as it was,” said Terry England, a Republican state lawmaker who chairs the House budget committee in Georgia.

Republican control of Congress and

the presidency means the GOP can act on its long-held priorities of reining in entitlement programs and repealing President Barack Obama’s health care law, which allowed states to expand the number of people eligible for Medicaid.

Thirty-one states have opted for the expansion.

It is not clear what the GOP’s replacement plan will look like. Democrats have warned of dire consequences, and any proposed changes are likely to trigger a fight in Congress.

Last week, the Democratic Governors Association warned that repealing the Affordable Care Act would end health coverage for millions of people and shift the financial burden onto the states, costing them $68.5 billion in uncompensated care over the next decade.

The group said the Medicaid expansion alone has provided coverage for millions of Americans who lacked insurance and that it had been a critical tool for states in combating the opioid epidemic.

In 2012, a plan by Ryan to reduce the federal deficit included a proposal to convert Medicaid funding into block grants with a cap on the amount the federal government would provide.

Advocacy groups warned that that approach would ultimately lead to fewer people receiving coverage.

The Congressional Budget Office concluded that under Ryan’s proposal, “states would need to increase their spending on these programs, make considerable cutbacks in them, or both.”

Earlier this year, Ryan and Republican leaders offered another, more flexible option: States would receive a fixed amount from Washington for each person enrolled. That approach would allow federal payments to grow if, for example, a recession forced more people onto Medicaid.

More than 70 million are on Medicaid, nearly 10 million of them covered as a result of the expansion.

Be careful driving in 2017 “Hey, let’s be careful out there.”

The late Michael Conrad, portraying Sgt. Phil Esterhaus in the 1980s NBC police drama “Hill Street Blues,” made that phrase a national watchword.

As 2017 dawns, motorists in our region should take those words to heart, because driving a vehicle in Illinois has become more dangerous.

For the first time since 2008, more than 1,000 fatalities were recorded on Illinois roadways in 2016. The count stood at 1,055 as of Wednesday, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The state’s fatality rate has risen this year by 7.3 percent.

Why are traffic fatalities increasing statewide?

IDOT points to several reasons.

1. Gas prices are low, and people are driving more.

Illinoisans drove 630 million more miles last year than the average previous 4 years; this year, they’ve driven 1.7 percent more miles than in 2015.

2. Not enough people wear seat belts. Nearly half of all fatalities involve someone who didn’t buckle up.

3. Too many people drink and drive. Nearly 25 percent of all fatalities last year involved an impaired driver.

4. Distracted driving can cause crashes – more than 6,000 of them from 2009 to 2013, because the driver was using a cellphone at the time.

It’s worth noting that unlicensed drivers have been involved in 151 fatal crashes this year, and that 215 fatalities occurred where the victim didn’t use a restraint or used it improperly.

The increase in traffic fatalities comes after a remarkable period of improved highway safety in Illinois. In 2009, fatalities fell to 911 – the first time they were below 1,000 since 1921. Fatalities stayed in the 900-plus range over a seven-year period through last year, thanks to several factors: tougher laws on intoxicated and distracted driving, greater focus on teen driving safety, and greater enforcement of existing laws regarding speeding and seat belts.

The state’s slow recovery from the Great Recession of 2007 to ’09 likely also was a factor in suppressing motorist miles driven during some of that period.

But with fatalities rising from 924 in 2014, to 998 in 2015, to 1,055 as of Wednesday, Illinois drivers should sit up and take notice.

Making the highways safer isn’t rocket science. Whether they’re going to the store, driving to work, or heading out on the tollway or interstate, drivers should resolve to follow traffic officials’ advice: • Always buckle your seat belt.

• Don’t drink and drive.

• Don’t text and drive.

• Don’t use a cell phone at all while driving.

• Don’t speed.

• Obey all other traffic laws.

• Drive defensively.

If we’re all a little more careful out there, we can make 2017 a safer and happier new year.

Saving Medicare payment reform The quest to create a more rational health care system took a dispiriting turn this month, when the federal government abandoned an effort to motivate doctors to use the best available drugs, rather than the costliest ones. What’s worrisome is that this could be the start of a more general retreat from payment reform in health care as the White House changes hands.

The effort in question was to change the fee that Medicare now pays doctors for administering drugs in their offices, a fee that amounts to 6 percent of the drug’s cost. Under this system, the pricier the medicine, the greater a doctor’s financial incentive to use it.

Given that drug spending

by Medicare has been rising by 10 percent annually, and now tops $100 billion a year, this reimbursement policy is indefensible. Indeed, it illustrates why the U.S. spends 18 percent of its economic output on health care – more than any other country.

Yet in March, when the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services proposed shrinking the fee, doctors and pharmaceutical companies pushed back. Last week, CMS capitulated.

The broader cause of payment reform is in jeopardy, too, partly because the present administration has moved slowly on it. When Barack Obama exits the White House, dozens of pilot projects for new payment systems will be left unfinished, and only a handful of those reforms have become mandatory. A bigger concern: Congressman Tom Price, Donald Trump’s pick to be health secretary, has already demanded that CMS scale back the initiatives.

The reforms CMS has pursued include such promising strategies as paying hospitals a single fee for a hip replacement and other procedures, paying doctors a fixed fee per patient, along with a bonus for improving care, and asking doctors

and hospitals to coordinate the care they give in order to avoid providing unnecessary services. If Medicare could save money through such reforms, private insurers could follow suit.

Republicans, meanwhile, want to replace Medicare altogether with a voucher system that would help older people buy insurance on the individual market. Presumably, competing insurers could then figure out for themselves how to cut costs. But the companies could save money as easily by simply covering fewer services and shunning sicker patients as by giving doctors incentives to work more efficiently.

The Obama administration’s unfinished payment-reform efforts are a far better way to lower costs – for Medicare and for health care generally. They’re yet another important aspect of Obamacare that President-elect Trump should preserve.

Carrie Fisher gave new hope to geeky girls around the world VIEWS Jenna Busch I was devastated by the news of Carrie Fisher’s passing. Fisher was so many things: a writer, an actor, a script doctor, an author and one of the funniest women out there. She spoke frankly about her struggle with drugs and mental illness, letting people know it was OK to have flaws. She laughed at her own struggles, tweeting in 2011, “If my life wasn’t funny it would just be true and that is unacceptable.”

Part of what she laughed at was the fame she earned playing Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” films. It was not all she was, but the role she played changed everything for me, and for millions of little girls around the world.

Back in the 1970s, girls didn’t have a lot of strong role models in mainstream entertainment. The women we saw in films and on TV were waiting to be rescued or draped artistically over the hero. They were decoration, or prizes to be won. We read books and fairy tales where the only accomplishment of the lead female was to be lovely enough to catch someone’s eye.

Even the smart ones were smart only until they found a man.

Little girls in the 1970s were lucky enough to find something different in Princess Leia. I was almost 4 when the film came out, and I saw it in the theater in 1977.

“Star Wars” did something new with their lead. Leia wasn’t just a princess to be won; Leia was a fighter in the Rebellion against the evil Empire. She stood up to Darth Vader despite seeing her entire planet blown to bits in front of her – she barely even flinched when it happened. Leia survived Vader’s torture, and when Luke Skywalker and Han Solo came to rescue her, she took over and saved all of their skins. She ran the Rebel outpost on Hoth and, after trying to save Han, she strangled her captor, Jabba the Hutt, with her own slave chains.

She later became a general in the fight for freedom. If you read any of the new canon books about her, you know just how vital she was to the Rebellion for her entire life.

You cannot imagine what a revelation that was for me and for girls everywhere. Many of us were sick of waiting for our prince to come or of

When I was a girl on the playground, I wasn’t sitting on top of the monkey bars waiting to be rescued, or standing by politely with my hands folded like a good little princess. I took up my stick/blaster and fought the Stormtroopers and Darth Vader.

When I saw something that was wrong, I did something about it. And why not? Leia didn’t back down from anyone. She didn’t always succeed, but she always tried, despite all the odds.

Being in love was great, but it wasn’t the only thing in her life. She risked her life to save the galaxy. Her friends mattered. Her cause mattered. She was certainly a better shot than those Stormtroopers.

Once I saw Leia, I was never going to sit quietly again. Leia inspired me to hold my head high and tell the world

when something was wrong with the way women are portrayed.

Because of Leia, I fight for equality.

Because of Leia, I started my site, Legion of Leia, to tell the world that women love geek culture. I did it to shine a light on the things that were wrong in the world and to celebrate them when they’re right.

I’m hardly alone. So many women of my generation can point to a picture of themselves dressed as Princess Leia as a kid. If you walk around any comic book convention, you see dozens of little girls with those iconic cinnamon-roll buns in their hair. It stirs my heart every time I see it.

Carrie Fisher wasn’t just Leia, of course. Her career encompassed so many parts of the entertainment industry. Her contribution to erasing the stigma around mental illness was enormous. Her humor kept us laughing with her through her struggles and her triumphs. She was a role model as Leia, but she was one as Carrie as well: Her positive attitude and raw honesty

were a guiding example to me in my own career.

Leia was (almost) the only woman in a group of men, and Fisher was one of the few female stars in the sci-fi world; that was something I could relate to, being one of the only women covering geekdom early on. She seemed to be able to find the ridiculous in the diciest of situations. If she could laugh at herself through it all, so could I. Her ability to do so much – write books, act, pen advice columns and more – encouraged me to keep taking on different projects until I found what I wanted to do.

Leia was brave. So was Carrie.

Rest in peace, general. May the Force be with you.

DAILY CHRONICLE Kishwaukee College has long offered an emergency medical services program, offering an associate in applied science degree in paramedic and shorter-term certificates in both paramedic and emergency medical technician.

Although the programs were offered by Kish College, the class site was Kishwaukee Hospital.

This fall, for the first time, classes were taught at the college, offering students and instructors better access to student labs and resources. Instructors Deb Baert and Steve Ernest have settled in to their new classroom space.

Baert and Ernest have decades of training and on-the-job experience in EMS. “When we started in EMS, it wasn’t a degree program of any type,” Baert said in a news release.

“We now offer our program here as an associates in applied science in EMS.” Both Baert and Ernest are licensed and certified in the field. Their expertise and experience made both of them a natural fit in a classroom that emphasizes the ability to become a professional who can quickly assess a situation and take appropriate action.

“It is extremely rewarding to see students grow in class, and then do well in the field of EMS after

graduation,” Ernest said in the release. “It has been an amazing feeling at times that I have shown up on a call, seen someone I have taught at some point over the years, and then work alongside them!”

Baert echoed Ernest’s excitement in teaching.

“I really love watching my students grow as EMS providers and as people,” she said. “I love seeing the expression on the students’ faces as they begin to understand how to put the knowledge together with clinical components and become EMS providers.”

Relocating the program to the college campus made sense. The classes regularly came to campus for a variety of lab experiences, for example to learn from and practice on the cadavers housed at Kish in the anatomy and physiology labs.

The completion of the Terry and Sherrie Martin Health Careers wing at the college brought all the various health care-based programs together: nursing, radiology, therapeutic massage and esthetics.

Being in an academic setting allows both Baert and Ernest, who have other responsibilities when they are at the hospital, to more fully focus on the students’ experience.

Community comes together to make Christmas brighter for area children DAILY CHRONICLE DeKALB – Family Service Agency partnered with several local organizations, businesses and community members for its annual Adopt-a-Family program, making sure that children have gifts to open Christmas morning and their families have a hearty holiday meal.

Earlier this week, families from Family Service Agency’s Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) and Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) programs came to the agency, where they were given wrapped gifts for every child in their family, as well as a frozen turkey and all the makings of a holiday feast.

Gifts were donated by individuals, families, businesses and service clubs.

Blain’s Farm & Fleet of Sycamore donated hundreds of toys, and PetSmart contributed stuffed animals to be distributed for Christmas and through other FSA events throughout the year.

The Sycamore Fire Department delivered turkeys and bags of groceries for each family. The 98 children helped this year were chosen based on need and live in homes all over DeKalb County.

“The holidays are hard for the majority of our families and to see that so many people care and want to help is a testament to our community,” said

Barbs just miss 3-0 start

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB –The DeKalb wrestling team fell just one point short of winning all three of its first-day matches Thursday in the 2016 Don Flavin Invitational.

DeKalb started the day by winning its first two matches by large margins.

The Barbs opened the invitational by defeating Glenbard West, 43-22, and continued with a 52-15 lopsided win against Grayslake North. The Barbs won 10 of their matches against Grayslake North.

The Barbs approached their last match of the day against a tough Prospect team with big momentum after convincingly beating their previous two opponents. DeKalb had its hands full against Prospect, and the decisive points came down to the last match of the night that featured DeKalb’s Tyler Scarbrough against the Knights’ Andrew Baysingar in the 113-pound weight class. DeKalb held a 31-28 lead heading into the match, but would end up surrendering that lead after Baysingar earned his team four points after the 14-4 major decision that gave the Knights a 32-31 win over the Barbs.

“That last dual hurt,” DeKalb coach Sam Hiatt said. “We keep coming up short in the big dual meets, but I think we’re knocking on the door. Prospect is a very good team, obviously, but we’re going to get there. It’s frustrating, but we need to keep improving as a whole team. It’s a little frustrating right now, but I know we’re going to bounce back tomorrow.”

Wrestlers to record victories in each of the first two matches included Fabian Lopez, Tyler Scarbrough, Blah Dahnweih and Niels Lewerentz. Lopez was the only 3-0 wrestler, with his victories coming by a forfeit, fall and a technical fall.

DeKalb started its third dual match with the same momentum it had in its previous matches by winning five of the first seven individual matches.

That came to a screaming halt as the Knights would go on to win six of the last seven matches of the dual.

“We’re confident in these guys to bounce back tomorrow,” Hiatt said.

“We just need to get bonus points and stop giving up those bonus points.

Barbs starters bounce back with victory over Lemont

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb boys basketball coach Al Biancalana wasn’t happy with the effort from his starters on Wednesday.

They got the message on Thursday.

After benching the normal starters to open the game, the No. 5 seed Barbs climbed back for a 46-37 win over No. 8 seed Lemont in a consolation game of the Chuck Dayton Classic on Thursday afternoon.

“The guys that normally start didn’t deserve to start with the effort from the night before,” Biancalana said. “It’s not fair to all the other guys on the team if we just keep rewarding bad approaches, lack of concentration, lack of effort.”

The Barbs (8-3) were coming off a 57-50 loss to Marmion Academy in the second round of the tournament on Wednesday.

“For me, I kind of saw (the benching) coming, based off that performance (against Marmion),” DeKalb senior guard Michael Mitchell said. “I thought he’d change it up because it wasn’t just under-performance, it was a lack of effort.”

Mitchell scored a game-high 16 points on 4-for-10 shooting, and senior point guard Cole Tucker, who missed the game against Marmion with a right shoulder injury, scored 12 points and had five rebounds in 27 minutes.

Biancalana originally said that Tucker wouldn’t play the rest of the tournament, but during practice Thursday morning the senior guard said he felt good enough to play.

“I told coach during the walkthrough that I can dribble, I can pass, I don’t care if I score or not,” Tucker said. “I had to play. I couldn’t miss two games in a row. It felt good to be back on the floor.”

Lemont (6-7) was led by Jerry Radomski and Nate Ferguson, both of whom scored 11 points in the game.

The Barbs played solid defense against Lemont big man Paul O’Lery, who had four points, no rebounds and eight turnovers after fouling out in 18 minutes.

Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier doesn’t like what he’s reading in the tea leaves.

After a report by ESPN’s Brett McMurphy that cited Frazier bringing up the idea of the Group of 5 football programs branching off to create their own playoff, Frazier told the Daily Chronicle he simply wants to have a conversation about the matter and fears that the gap between the Power 5 and the Group of 5 is widening.

“The idea has been out there; it’s nothing I came up with,” Frazier said.

“I’m just the one who went on the record with it. It’s time to have a conversation about it and the financial situation with it and if it’s working.

Why wait eight years? Let’s talk about it now.”

Currently, the highest ranked Group of 5 team is guaranteed a spot in a New Year’s 6 bowl through the 2025 regular season, with the top team playing in either the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl or Peach Bowl. Before the College Football Playoff was introduced, Northern Illinois made the Orange Bowl in 2013, losing, 31-10, to Florida State.

Since 2014, the College Football Playoff has determined the Football Bowl Subdivision national champion, and there has not yet been a non-Power 5 team in the four-team field – leading Frazier to believe that only the big boys in the world of college football have a chance to be crowned champion.

“You can’t argue the trend that the gap between the Group of 5 and the Power 5 is expanding,” said Frazier, who was traveling with his family in northern Wisconsin on his birthday Thursday.

The idea certainly has been polarizing, with backers believing it allows teams in the Group of 5 to compete against teams with similar resources for something other than a bowl, while critics say it devalues the Group of 5 and concedes that they are lesser than the Power 5.

“You mean compete for a junior varsity championship?” a Group of 5 athletic director told ESPN. “No thanks.”

Western Michigan went 13-0 this season, including wins against Illinois and Northwestern, but is ranked No. 15 in the CFP and will play No. 8 Wisconsin (10-3) in the Cotton Bowl despite being one of two undefeated FBS teams, along with No. 1 Alabama.

Frazier said that while he believes Western Michigan is the best Group of 5 team this year, there will be doubt because of the lack of a playoff.

Since 2014, no Group of 5 team has been ranked higher than No. 13 by the CFB Playoff selection committee.

Frazier, who orchestrated having the Huskies play Toledo at the White Sox’s Guaranteed Rate Field this season, told ESPN that he envisions an eight-team playoff for the Group of 5 – including the champions from the MAC, American Athletic Conference, Sun Belt, Conference USA, Mountain West and Independents BYU, Army and UMass, along with three at-large bids.

While he didn’t provide concrete plans on how it would work with scheduling the extra games, he said that theoretically, the Group of 5 wouldn’t necessarily have to give up the guaranteed slot for the New Year’s bowl game. He brought up the idea that the Cotton Bowl, Peach Bowl or Fiesta Bowl could either be the championship game of the hypothetical Group of 5 playoff or the champion could play in it.

While Frazier said he was in favor of exploring the idea of a playoff for the Group of 5, his sentiments weren’t echoed by other officials.

American Conference commissioner Mike Aresco said that he was opposed to the notion.

“The answer is an emphatic no,” Aresco told ESPN. “We compete for national championships like anyone else in FBS, including the Power 5, and have no interest in any kind of separate championship.”

This season, Houston, which plays in the AAC, was ranked as high as No. 6 in the Associated Press poll – with a win over Oklahoma in the season opener – before losing to Navy on Oct. 8 and eventually falling out of the conversation with a loss at SMU on Oct. 22. The Cougars finished the season 9-4 with a 48-44 loss to Memphis and lost the Vegas Bowl to San Diego State, 34-10, on Dec. 17.

Hokies pull off the biggest comeback in school history

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jerod Evans threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two scores and No. 18 Virginia Tech pulled off the largest comeback in its 124-year history, erasing a 24-point halftime deficit to beat Arkansas, 35-24, Thursday night in the Belk Bowl.

After being limited to 180 yards in the first half, Hokies (10-4) took advantage of three of Austin Allen’s interceptions and scored touchdowns on five of their first seven possessions of the second half.

Evans scored on a 4-yard run and threw touchdown strikes to Sam Rogers and Chris Cunningham to cut it to 24-21 In the third quarter. Travon McMillan put the Hokies ahead for good with 12:03 left in the game when he scored on a 6-yard run. Evans sealed the win with an 8-yard touchdown scamper Virginia Tech came in averaging 35 points, but the Razorbacks (7-6) set the tone early by turning Evans’ fumble and interception into 10 points to take a 17-0 lead in the first quarter. Arkansas extended the lead to 24-0 at halftime and it looked as if it might cruise to an easy victory.

But Evans had other ideas. He completed 12 of 16 passes for 129 yards and two TDs in the second half, helping Justin Fuente became the first coach

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Quinton Flowers ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more to lead South Florida past South Carolina.

South Florida (11-2) squandered a 39-21 lead in the second half, but recovered for its school-record 11th victory.

Flowers threw a 25-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime, finding Elkanah Dillon in the end zone.

South Carolina’s overtime drive ended after Jake Bentley was sacked

by Mike Love on fourth down. Bentley fumbled and Khalid McGee recovered to end the game.

Flowers, who was selected the game’s Most Valuable Player, completed 23 of 32 passes for 261 yards and ran for 105 yards on 21 carries.

The Bulls controlled the game for most of the afternoon, but the Gamecocks rallied to tie it at 39 with 1:11 remaining on A.J. Turner’s 1-yard touchdown run and a 2-point conversion.

Bentley completed 32 of 43 passes for 390 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Deebo Samuel caught 14 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown.

South Carolina (6-7) was hurt by five turnovers, including a pick-six.

Once again, Hawks come from behind

mlazerus@suntimes.com NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Joel Quenneville always says he never worries about his team’s offense, that the goals will always come eventually. It’s a common refrain around the Blackhawks.

“Nobody’s worried in this room about our offense,” Corey Crawford said earlier in the week. “It’s a long season. There’s games where it just doesn’t go in. It’s fine. Our guys are going to score goals.”

Well, Crawford did what he could to help on Thursday night. A crafty veteran move by Crawford drew a penalty midway through the second period, which led to a Jonathan Toews power-play goal and an eventual 3-2 Hawks victory Thursday night in Nashville. The comeback victory ended a three-game losing skid for the Hawks.

It wasn’t the prettiest win – once again, the Hawks were badly outshot in the first period, and mustered precious little offense until the third period. But it kept them in first place in the Central Division ahead of the streaking Minnesota Wild.

Trailing 2-1 in the third period after Mike Fisher’s power-play goal, Crawford drew a penalty – and the Bridgestone Arena fans’ ire – when he sneakily stuck out his left leg as

Craig Smith came across the crease, drawing contact and a tripping penalty. On the ensuing power play, Toews deflected a Brent Seabrook shot past Pekka Rinne to tie the game 2-2.

Less than four minutes later, at 14:48 of the third, Patrick Kane fired a shot past Rinne for his 11th goal and the 700th point of his career. It stood as the game-winner.

With Brian Campbell out and goals hard to come by lately, Quenneville offered a new power-play look. Rather than have Seabrook and Duncan Keith at the points in a traditional power-play setup, the top unit went with a 1-3-1 formation, with Keith up high, Artemi Panarin, Toews and Kane across, and Artem Anisimov posting up in front of Rinne. The move paid instant dividends, as Anisimov deflected a Keith shot past Rinne for a 1-0 Hawks lead at 13:19 of the first.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Predators got it back 35 seconds later. After Ryan Johansen saved a Dennis Rasmussen clearing attempt, he passed over to Filip Forsberg who fired the puck past Crawford for the equalizer.

Mike Fisher snuck behind Keith and knocked in a nice cross-ice pass from Mathias Ekholm for a power-play goal and a 2-1 Nashville lead at 6:13 of the third period. Then Crawford did his best Dave Bolland impression, and the comeback was on.

28 Risks abound for kids using marijuana Dear Doctor: Marijuana seems to be increasingly accepted in our country. But I worry about my kids using it. Is it addictive?

Dear Reader: You’re right to be worried – and not only because marijuana can indeed be addictive.

Marijuana has gained greater acceptance in this country, not in small part because its medical use can stimulate appetite and control nausea and pain. One potential problem with this degree of acceptance is how adolescents view the drug.

In 2015, 70 percent of high school seniors viewed marijuana as not harmful, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s (NIDA) Monitoring the Future survey; in 1990, only 20 percent felt this way. Interestingly enough, the 2015 survey also found 70 percent of 12th-graders disapprove of the regular use of marijuana.

Perhaps the biggest risk with marijuana is how it affects the adolescent brain. The endocannabinoid system, a vast system of receptors within the brain, spinal cord and smaller nerves, affects multiple brain and body functions. This system continues to develop in humans until the age of 21 or so.

If used frequently in adolescence, marijuana can rewire many of these nerve pathways.

These changes aren’t seen as much in the adult brain and, if they surface, can be easily reversed by stopping use. In adolescents, however, this rewiring of the nervous system may create addiction.

According to the NIDA, only 9 percent of people who try marijuana become addicted. However, this number increases to 16 percent among those who start using marijuana in adolescence. It increases further if marijuana is used daily in adolescence.

In fact, 17 percent of admissions to publicly funded substance abuse programs are related to marijuana.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley much more addictive substance and can cause withdrawal symptoms that are life threatening. That is true. However, just because one substance has particularly bad effects doesn’t mean another one is safe.

There are problems with each.

Marijuana not only causes short-term memory loss, it also affects mental abilities for days after its use. That means a person’s ability to plan, organize, solve problems and make decisions is impaired, which has significant ramifications for adolescents trying to retain information learned in school or trying to maintain good study habits.

Further, for those predisposed to schizophrenia, marijuana can induce psychosis and, in younger users, can decrease the age of schizophrenia’s onset. People with a familial predisposition to schizophrenia certainly should avoid use.

However, marijuana has not been associated with depression or bipolar disorder, and while those with generalized anxiety are more likely to use marijuana, that connection may be linked more to a need to compensate than to causal effect.

I would advise high school students not to use alcohol or marijuana, but your child, like many others, may be exposed to these and other drugs in high school. As a parent, be sure to watch for signs of abuse or consistent use, and to note any psychological issues that could lead to frequent marijuana use.

husband and I are in our 30s.

We do well for ourselves and generally are happy. We both have siblings who have various problems – drug abuse, emotional issues, broken relationships. Our parents travel to support them during their various dramas, but visit my husband and me only if they need a place to stay and don’t want to pay for a hotel.

My parents have cited fear of flying as a reason they don’t visit us much, and my husband’s parents claim they don’t have the money. However, their travel itineraries to visit our siblings suggest otherwise.

I haven’t asked my husband’s parents about this, but I did ask mine. My mother said because we’re “on a good path,” they don’t need to see us as often or put as much effort into us.

I was shocked. How do we deal with knowing we’re less favored because we have our act together? – The Good Kids Dear Good Kids: You are not the only people with this problem. The same thing tends to happen in families in which there is a child with special needs. The parents expend their energy where they think it is needed most, which often results in hurt and resentment on the part of the stronger siblings.
