Good morning, DeKalb County ...

Year-end memories of longtime friends At the end of every year, memories come flooding back as we reflect on the previous 12 months, whether they were good, bad or much the same.

Our family was blessed with good health, good friends and pleasant travels. But I cannot forget those who passed away or have entered their final stages of care.

One family that I have been close with since I was a child back on the farm are the Bowkers, Ross and Eleanor and their three daughters, who I probably had a crush on all at one time. Judy, Nancy and Patty tolerated me even though I was younger by anywhere from two to nine years. I was thrilled to spend some summer weekends at their family farm.

Our folks were close friends. My mother was a regular at Eleanor’s beauty shop. By the way, Eleanor did hair in the Hinckley and then Geneva areas from about age 17 until she was in her mid-80s, a record recognized at a national convention of beauticians.

Her husband, Ross, and my father were both farmers at the time and had similar dispositions, a great sense of humor. When my folks moved from Waterman to Baseline Road near Genoa, they still kept in touch. We also had a summer place at Lake Kegonsa, where they came to fish and boat. It seemed the Bowkers always owned a flashy convertible, and I loved to go riding with the top down.

I became separated from them when we went off to different colleges. Then my job, marriage to Kay, and a long time spent in California kept us apart. But every time we came back for a visit, a day was set aside so I could visit Eleanor, who was widowed by that time, and we kept up with

She passed away before we retired and moved back home, but one of my first contacts was with the “Bowker girls” who took us out to Fairview Cemetery to the graves of Ross and Eleanor.

Since then we get together at least once or twice a year, even though two of them live a bit away.

Each Sunday morning after attending the Sycamore Methodist services we usually saw the oldest daughter, Patty, and her son at the Sycamore Cafe, where they came after going to church at St. John’s Lutheran.

All this came to an end last August, when Patty Wilson, 85, and son, Bob, 64, were killed in their rural Sycamore home. We were devastated and at a loss as to how this could happen to such wonderful people. The killer still is at large, and that makes it harder to bring closure to something that horrible. But we continue to stay in touch with her sisters, Judy and Nancy, sharing the lifetime of fond memories about them and both our parents, who have passed on.

That’s about all good friends can do – share memories and try to keep spirits up.

So I look forward to a brighter 2017 and hope for a year free of tragedies in our lives. And I wish the same for everyone else.

Los Rancheros restaurant expansion, renovations nearly finished

DeKALB – Changes are in store for Los Rancheros in DeKalb, with the expanded restaurant almost complete and plans for a bigger bar, more seating space and new twists to old favorites on the menu.

The authentic Mexican restaurant at 2350 Sycamore Road is expanding into space next door that used to be a Chinese buffet restaurant.

Manager Emanuel Lopez said the restaurant reopened in the new space Dec. 9 after a 10-day closure, and the old space remains closed while renovations are being finished.

He said the entire restaurant should be ready by the end of January.

“We tried to remodel the China buffet area first, then get the kitchen all renovated, get that all done,” Lopez said. “They’re still working on the other side, which hopefully, by late January we should be opened up.”

Once both sides are finished, the new space will be a banquet room for parties while the old space will include the main entrance, seating area and bar.

Lopez said his father decided to renovate the family restaurant after his summer vacation in Mexico, and construction began in November. The restaurant has been in DeKalb for 10 years.

“He thought it was a good time to remodel the place because the place deserved it,” Lopez said. “It’s been running just fine – got a lot of usual customers.”

He said that although Los Rancheros has had good business for the past few years, his father wanted to expand the restaurant so it could seat and serve more customers.

Lopez said the decor of the restaurant will have a rustic look inspired

by Mexico, such as handmade wooden wagon wheels, faux balconies, colorful artwork and textured paint on the walls.

“This is the more authentic Mexican style and feel,” he said. “It’s like you’re in DeKalb outside; once you step in here, you’re somewhere else.”

The menu also will get a makeover; Lopez said the dishes will have different presentations while maintaining the same flavors.

With the bar still under construction, Lopez said the restaurant has been serving bottled beer and margaritas, but a revamped drink menu is coming as well. The bar also will be larger with more TVs. “We’ll be presenting a fresh margarita with hand-squeezed lime, good tequila and bringing some mojitos in,” he said. “Just more fresh drinks coming in than the typical margarita and daiquiri, something different.”

He said he believes the bar will be the main attraction of the restaurant.

“We’re trying to bring something new for people to try,” Lopez said.

The restaurant’s hours are from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Ballot order set for local office candidates

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Jerry Smith was the only DeKalb mayoral candidate on hand to watch the lottery drawing Wednesday in the City Council Chambers, and he was hoping luck would be on his side as name order was determined for April’s election ballot.

City Clerk Jennifer Johnson drew names from a small, green bucket to determine the order in which candidates’ names would appear on the April 4 ballot – and Smith learned that his name would be second behind incumbent Mayor John Rey. Michael Embrey’s name will be third on the ballot. The fourth candidate, Misty Haji-Sheikh, submitted her petition later and was not part of the lottery.

“I was here because I had the time and I felt that it was important,” Smith said. “I don’t know if it will have any impact or not, but I’m very pleased with where I am, and I’m delighted at the response that I’ve received from the public as it relates to my candidacy.”

Ballot placement is determined by the order each candidate files his or her nominating petitions, and lotteries have been held in both DeKalb and Sycamore.

Since Smith, Rey and local businessman Embrey all filed their petitions for mayor at the same time, a random lottery drawing was needed.

Some studies have shown that being first on the ballot can give a candidate an edge.

The edge increases in races that receive little publicity or where the candidates do not run as members of a political party, the study found.

In addition to the mayoral candidates, two people vying for the Ward 2 alderman seat also required a lottery drawing.

Incumbent Alderman Bill Finucane will appear first. He will be followed

by William Lamb and Barry Federici, who filed their petitions at the end of the filing period.

Smith said that he plans to meet with his campaign committee next

week to determine strategies for communicating with the public and finding out what issues they feel are the most important.

Johnson said that while the name order on the ballot has been set, the list of candidates won’t be official until the end of the filing period for any objections to someone’s candidacy, which was 5 p.m. Wednesday.

“Given the holiday, we thought that extending the lottery to the fifth day of the objection period would be the easiest for everyone involved,” Johnson said.

Incumbent City Clerk Candy Smith will be the first name on the ballot for mayor, followed by 1st Ward Alderman Curt Lang and 4th Ward Alderman Rick Kramer.

The city clerk candidates in order of their ballot placement will be Cortney Cox, Lisa Hepker, Shaney Herrmann, Mary Kalk and Christiene Drake.

Sycamore’s objection period ended Monday.

Genoa police officer goes ‘above and beyond’ for resident

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com GENOA – A local police officer who said he was just doing his job is going to be publicly lauded for his efforts in helping a woman who was locked out of her home on one of the coldest days of the year.

Carole Wiley, 72, had returned home from the KishHealth System Cancer Center on Dec. 19, when temperatures reached a monthlong low of 10 degrees with a wind chill 16 degrees below zero, and found she was locked out.

A nearby relative had taken her to the hospital for bloodwork for an undiagnosed condition that has lowered her blood count and weakened her for the past three years.

With her landlord unavailable, the two called the police and experienced treatment that Wiley said went above and beyond what she expected.

Officer Chris Hathcoat responded to the scene, and when he was unable to open the screen door to her home, he broke a window to get inside and let Wiley out of the cold.

After cleaning up the glass to make

the area safe and checking on Wiley, Hathcoat took the window to a local hardware store to repair it.

“She’s not able to drive and may have gotten sick in the cold, so I took care of it,” Hathcoat said. “It seemed like the right thing to do to help her out.”

Store employees cut the glass but couldn’t replace it, so the officer did it himself.

But before he returned to Wiley’s home with the repaired window, Hathcoat grabbed a snow shovel from the police department.

The officer then replaced the window, shoveled Wiley’s walkways and cleaned up after the ordeal, which took about 90 minutes total.

“With the way police officers are treated nowadays, I thought it was above and beyond anything someone should do,” Wiley said. “It makes me feel bad because I wish there was something I could do to thank him, but I just felt like people should know.”

Genoa Police Chief Robert Smith said that he would make sure Hathcoat receives commendation at the Jan. 17 City Council meeting.

Vera married the love of her life, Russell “Babe” Worden on June 10, 1939 in Clinton, IA. They lived in Sycamore since 1939. She worked as a homemaker and then worked in food service at the Southeast School in Sycamore, retiring after 20 years of service.

Vera and her husband spent their winters in Pharr, TX for 15 years.

Vera was a life-long member of the Sycamore United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and belonged to the United Methodist Woman.

She was a leader of the Rachel Circle and the craft group.

She is survived by her one son, William Worden.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2012; and her 6 siblings.

Her memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorials can be made for the Sycamore United Methodist Church in care of the Butala Funeral Home and Crematory, 1405 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL. 60178.

Appeals process continues for convicted murderer Man pleaded guilty in slaying of NIU student DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The appeals process will continue for a man who pleaded guilty in the 2010 murder of 18-year-old Northern Illinois University freshman Antinette “Toni” Keller.

William Curl, 40, has claimed that he only agreed to plead guilty because his court-appointed attorney made mistakes and because DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack threatened to

prosecute Curl’s son, who was 13 at the time, in connection with Keller’s murder.

Prosecutors dispute those claims and others Curl has raised. They are fighting Curl’s petition for post-conviction relief, which he filed from prison in May 2015.

In August 2015, a judge said Curl could move forward with the appeal, but he faces a higher burden of proof as the claim moves through the three-step process.

In April 2013, Curl entered a special plea agreement in which he maintained his innocence but acknowledged prosecutors could prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he murdered Keller. Curl is serving a 37-year prison sentence at Menard Correctional Center.

The nonprofit independent living center known as RAMP provides services and advocacy for people with dis-

abilities in the northern Illinois region.

The Deaf Advocacy Team is open to anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing as well as friends, family members and interpreters who would like to advocate on behalf of the deaf community.

A: This box-shape tortoiseshell purse was part of Chanel’s 1997 Autumn/Winter collection. Karl Lagerfeld is the head designer at Chanel, as well as at Fendi, and has his own label. These bags were made for Chanel’s 1997 Autumn/Winter collection and are hard to find since only a limited number were made. The tortoiseshell purse sells for $3,500 to $4,500, depending on its condition. *** Q: My grandmother gave me a tall coffee pitcher. It’s one of the few pieces left from her best china set. A: Your Haviland is not a coffee pot. It’s a chocolate pot, designed to serve hot chocolate. Chocolate pots are taller and more slender than coffee pots, which are usually squat.

They were most popular during the Victorian era. The Haviland brothers of New York City were importers of china, mostly from England. They moved to France to open a factory in Limoges, which was noted for its highquality porcelain. Haviland china has been made in Limoges since 1842. Your chocolate pot has the “Ranson” shape, named after Paul Ranson, a factory employee who designed it.

Ranson worked at the factory from 1890 to 1893. Ranson shapes were decorated with floral designs and were made until the French factory closed in 1931. The marks on your chocolate pot were used by Haviland from 1893 until 1926, so your pot was made during that time. A: Thomas Gibbons Hawkes immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland in 1862. He worked for a cut-glass company in Corning, N.Y., before starting his own firm, T.G. Hawkes & Company, in 1880. The company cut blanks made at other glass companies. Hawkes was in business until about 1962. Not all Hawkes glass was marked. The mark adds value. Cruets like yours are being offered at $50 to $100, but most sell for $30 or less.

A: Solingen, Germany, is known as the “City of Blades.” It has been the center of knife-making in Germany since the Middle Ages and home to several manufacturers of knives, swords and cutlery. BY TERRY AND KIM KOVEL Sewing was an important part of the life of a woman during the 17th and 18th centuries. There was no sewing machine; everything was hand-stitched.

Iron “grippers” were sometimes used to hold one end of the fabric while it was hemmed or embroidered. An improvement, the first “sewing bird,” was invented by Charles Waterman in 1853. It was made of brass, iron, or later, steel. The tool was clamped to a table and the bird held the fabric taut. It acted like an extra hand. Improvements were added to this sewing tool, including emery balls to sharpen needles, spool holders, drawers, winding reels for thread, pincushions, thread cutters and clamps made in fancy shapes like dogs, snakes, cherubs or dolphins. Variations of the sewing tool continued to be made by Singer Sewing Machine Co. until the 1980s. The sewing machine was invented in 1854, but it took many years to sell enough machines, so the sewing bird was no longer necessary. Copies are made today mainly for collectors or as decorations.

STATE Student wraps cancer patients in blankets of hope

ROCKFORD – When Ryan Anderson, 12, of Roscoe needed a community service project earlier this year for his sixth grade class at Roscoe Middle School, his mom told him to let his imagination go wild.

“I said, ‘Go ahead. Think big,’ ” said Anderson’s mom, Terra. “ ‘Don’t worry about the money. I’ll fund the project.’ ” It didn’t take long for Anderson, a creative and athletic preteen, to come up with an idea.

“My sister was making some blankets for her friends for their birthdays, so I thought that would be a good idea for my community service project,” Anderson said. “We recently had a family friend pass away from cancer and he was at SwedishAmerican Hospital. ... I wanted to do something with that cause.”

Using seed money from his mom, Anderson bought enough fleece for 10 blankets for patients at the SwedishAmerican Regional Cancer Center.

No budget affects exonerated ex-inmates owed $2.5M

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ budget impasse has put a hold on millions of dollars in payments to former inmates who’ve been exonerated of crimes.

Fourteen men are owed a total of $2.5 million as compensation for the years they served in prison before they received certificates of innocence from the state, The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reported.

The payments range from $5,000 to a maximum $220,732. The claims weren’t approved as part of a short-term budget that expires Friday. The payments are based on the length of time in prison.

John Hanlon, director of the Illinois Innocence Project, is urging lawmakers to approve the claims as part of a special awards bill.

He said the money is recognition that the state wrongfully imprisoned the exonerated former inmates.

“This is a unique situation,” he said.

“It was a requirement – at first,” he said. “Now I don’t have to do it; I want to.”

Anderson, now a seventh-grader, is the vice president of his school’s student council.

And he’s enlisted the help of his fellow council members to keep the blanket project going.

Council members usually meet in the mornings, but periodically get together in the afternoon to discuss business and tie up loose ends with the project.

“We’ve done eight blankets so far,”

Anderson said. “We still have a lot of fabric to deal with. With the blankets I [recently] turned in, we’ve made almost 40.”

Once word got out about Anderson’s project, a handful of donations floated in – both financial and fabric.

Anderson and his mom choose the extra fabric together, trying not to use the same pattern twice, in order to accommodate a patient’s tastes.

“We’ve spent quite a bit of money on it, but is there any money better spent?” Terra said. “It’s hopefully teaching him and his friends some wonderful life lessons. It’s easy to do, but it seems to have a really big impact.”

Anderson has received a couple of letters from patients and a note from a community member who wanted to thank him for his generosity.

And he’s stolen the hearts of staff members at SwedishAmerican’s Regional Cancer Center, said the center’s director, Diane Scoville.

“He is such a special young man, we love him.”

One exonerated former inmate is Angel Gonzalez, who served 20 years for a rape conviction. Gonzalez was convicted in 1994 of abducting a 35-year-old woman from her Waukegan home and raping her.

The victim later identified Gonzalez as her attacker. But DNA tests on forensic evidence collected from the victim and crime scene found two male profiles.

Neither of them matched Gonzalez.

Lauren Kaeseberg, co-counsel on Gonzalez’s case, said he is fortunate to have family support but his independence has been postponed by the lack of financial resources.

She referred to the overdue payments as “salt in the wounds and an insult to an egregious injury.”

CHICAGO – Chicago authorities said all police officers will be equipped with body cameras by the end of 2017, a year ahead of schedule.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a Wednesday statement announcing the sped up schedule that body cameras “improve transparency while building trust.”

Board reprimands town president over middle finger

CHATHAM – Trustees in a village near Springfield have reprimanded the town’s president for extending his middle finger at a public meeting.

A resolution, approved 5-0, said Chatham President Tom Gray’s conduct was “unprofessional” and will only “further divide the community.” Chatham has had problems with water quality.

Gray didn’t attend the meeting Tuesday. The State-Journal Register said he has apologized for giving the finger to a man who was livestreaming a meeting earlier this month.

Student government: Make SIU an immigrant santuary

CARBONDALE – Student groups at Southern Illinois University are asking school leaders to declare their campuses a sanctuary for students who are in the U.S. without legal permission.

Randy Dunn, president of the SIU system, said staff members are studying the issue. SIU has campuses in Carbondale and Edwardsville and a medical school in Springfield.

Brad Colwell, interim chancellor in Carbondale, said a sanctuary designation is “complex and brings with it a number of legal questions.” He said a possible consequence is the loss of federal financial aid.

The Southern Illinoisan said student government groups fear President-elect Donald Trump will deport students, based on his campaign statements.

They’re calling for an “unequivocal public declaration” of support for students from SIU administrators.

U.S. official: Top IS commander killed in Syria Police were searching for two

WASHINGTON – A senior U.S. defense official confirmed that a top Islamic State military commander was killed by a coalition airstrike Monday in Syria.

The official said that Abu Jandal al-Kuwaiti was killed near Tabqa Dam. He was a key leader of the group in Raqqa. No other details were available.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said earlier this week that he had been targeted by U.S.-led coalition aircraft. And IS supporters on social media had indicated on Tuesday that he had been killed.

The U.S. confirmation was the first official coalition acknowledgment of his death.

Video appears to show man walking away from cop

DALLAS – A police dashcam video released five months after a Texas officer shot a black man appears to show the man walking away as the officer fired, and the man’s lawyer said he was not a threat.

David Collie was shot in the back, leaving him paralyzed, lawyer Nate Washington said Wednesday.

Police said at the time of the July encounter that a Fort Worth officer fired twice, striking Collie “once in the lower torso.”

Platte County prosecutors charged 25-year-old Khurshed Haydarov on Saturday with the felony, a day after the disturbance along Interstate 29 north of Kansas City.

Haydarov required a Russian interpreter during a brief court appearance Tuesday. Authorities said he lives in Philadelphia but said he’s from Uzbekistan and speaks little English. A judge entered a plea of not guilty on Haydarov’s behalf and scheduled a Jan. 3 hearing to decide whether his $100,000 bond can be reduced, online court records show.

In farewell address, Kerry criticizes Israeli settlements

WASHINGTON – Secretary of State John Kerry tore into Israel on Wednesday for settlement-building, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of dragging Israel away from democracy and forcefully rejecting the notion that America had abandoned Israel with a controversial U.N. vote. Netanyahu accused the Obama administration of a biased bid to blame Israel for failure to reach a peace deal.

In a farewell speech, Kerry laid out a twostate vision for peace that he won’t be in office to implement, but that the U.S. hoped might be heeded even after President Barack Obama’s term ends. He defended Obama’s move last week to allow the U.N. Security Council to declare Israeli settlements illegal, the spark that set off an extraordinary and deepening diplomatic spat between the U.S. and its closest Mideast ally.

“If the choice is one state, Israel can either be Jewish or democratic, it cannot be both, and it won’t ever really be at peace,” Kerry said in a speech that ran more than an hour, a comprehensive airing of grievances that have built up in the Obama administration over eight years but were rarely, until this month, discussed publicly.

Netanyahu pushed back in a hastily arranged televised statement in which he suggested he was done with the Obama administration and ready to deal with President-elect Donald Trump, who has sided squarely with Israel. The Israeli leader faulted Kerry for obsessing over settlements while paying mere “lip service” to Palestinian attacks and incitement of violence.

“Israelis do not need to be lectured about the importance of peace by foreign leaders,” Netanyahu said from Jerusalem.

The dueling recriminations marked a low point for U.S.-Israel relations, and a bitter end to eight years of frustrated ties between Obama and Netanyahu, who quarreled repeatedly over settlements, the peace process and Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran.

Trump, who has assured Israel it merely needs to “hang on” until he takes over, told reporters that Kerry’s speech spoke for itself. It was unclear whether Israel came up in a phone call Obama, while vacationing in Hawaii, placed to Trump on Wednesday morning. Nor was it clear what effect Kerry’s speech, coming in the final days of the administration, might have.

Netanyahu expressed concern that a French-hosted summit next month could lead to an international framework that the U.N. Security Council might then codify with Obama’s assent, boxing Israel in. Yet Kerry seemed to rule out the possibility Obama would take more parting shots, such as promoting that type of U.N. resolution or recognizing Palestinian statehood.

The diplomatic fracas erupted last week when the U.S., in a departure from past policy, decided to abstain rather than veto a U.N. Security Council resolution calling Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem a violation of international law. Israel was incensed, and on Wednesday, Netanyahu claimed Israel has “absolute, indispensable evidence” the U.S. actually spearheaded the resolution.

Netanyahu offered what he called proof of U.S. collusion: a document, leaked to an Egyptian newspaper, that purports to be a Palestinian account of a December meeting between top U.S. and Palestinian officials. But White House spokesman Ned Price called it a “total fabrication” and added: “This meeting never occurred.”

One giant disappointment Looking back at the election of 2016, the results brought joy to some and disappointment to others.

For many reform-minded Illinoisans, one of the biggest disappointments had to do with a decision they never got the chance to make in the voting booth.

That’s because a lawyer friend of powerful House Speaker Michael Madigan, 74, D-Chicago, succeeded in having the Independent Map Amendment thrown off the ballot.

The Independent Map Amendment had the potential to reform the Illinois political scene immensely.

It would have taken the once-a-decade redistricting process out of politicians’ hands (namely Speaker Madigan’s for the past four decades) and placed it in the hands of an 11-member citizen redistricting commission.

Those bipartisan commissioners would not have been permitted to use political and incumbency considerations in drawing new state House and Senate districts. (The next ones are due to be created in 2021.)

The idea was to increase the number of competitive districts, and hence the accountability of lawmakers elected from those districts. The result would have weakened Madigan’s power to block other needed reforms in our financially troubled state.

The Independent Maps group got farther than two previous redistricting reform efforts in 2010 and 2014. This year’s well-organized effort actually succeeded in gathering enough petition signatures (more than 563,000) and getting enough of them certified by state elections officials that the proposed constitutional amendment was well on its way to being placed on the ballot.

But a lower court judge ruled the proposed amendment unconstitutional, and by a 4-3 vote in August, the Illinois Supreme Court agreed.

The decision, with four Democratic judges voting against the Independent Map Amendment and three Republican judges voting for it, shook the faith of many in our so-called independent judiciary.

We’re disappointed in the Supreme Court’s decision.

We’re greatly disappointed that justices provided so little legal guidance that any future redistricting reform petition efforts likely have minimal chance of success.

And we’re greatly, greatly disappointed that Illinois voters on Nov. 8 were denied the opportunity to institute a far-reaching reform that could have brought real accountability to the Madigan-dominated Illinois General Assembly.

Post-prison ID cards a good step

Sometimes, little things can be big things.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed bipartisan legislation this month that’s designed to make it easier for former prison inmates to make a smoother transition back into society.

It might seem like a small thing – but a valid identification card is only minor if one already has one. Many inmates don’t.

That’s why new legislation provides that the Secretary of State’s Office issue a standard identification card to those released from either adult or juvenile corrections facilities.

To qualify for a state ID card, recipients must present a birth certificate, Social Security card or some other form of identification.

Frankly, that ought not to be

too hard to come up with. After all, our prisons presumably know who they’re holding.

Rauner acknowledged the IDs represent a “simple step” for the state to provide proper identification for parolees. He expressed the hope that the move “will help us end the cycle of recidivism and give former offenders more tools necessary to be successful.”

That, of course, is easier said than done. Most inmates wouldn’t be inmates if they had what it takes to be successful in the real world.

Many have drug, alcohol or mental health issues. They come from abusive homes and lack education.

No wonder recidivism rates are so high.

Nonetheless, Rauner and legislators of both parties are

committed to taking the steps necessary to move nonviolent inmates out of prisons and into society.

The governor is committed to reducing the state’s prison population by 25 percent before 2025.

If that effort is going to be successful in a way that does not pose a safety threat to the public, many of society’s least successful people are going to have to make big changes in their lives.

That, naturally, will require an ID card, whether it’s to get a job or open a bank account.

One could ask, of course, why something so easy to do wasn’t done earlier. Well, at least it’s done now, and it’s on to the much harder stuff.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Republicans in the Senate don’t plan to wait until Trump is actually in office; aides said to expect action as soon as senators return to Washington next week.

“We will make a very strong attempt to do something immediately,” one senior GOP senate Aide said. “It is a real moment to re-examine the relationship with the United Nations and what it really does.”

During the presidential campaign, most observers predicted that if elected, Trump would focus his international-organization ire on NATO, which he often criticized as being obsolete and a burden on U.S. taxpayers.

Now, the United Nations could be first up for action, said Rick Santorum, who served in the Senate the last time the U.S. refused to pay its dues in full.

“The focus will come off NATO and will move squarely onto the U.N.,” he said. “It’s going to be a very raucous time. Barack Obama, with this move, did more damage to the United Nations than he did to Israel.”

Some Republicans in Congress are comparing the coming U.S. response with the anti-settlement resolution to the U.S. opposition in 1975 to a U.N. General Assembly resolution that equated Zionism with racism. U.S. Ambassador Daniel

Would they support the creation of a museum, perhaps building on our history of agricultural technology and farm communities?

Would they pledge to renew, strengthen and enforce an agreement with surrounding towns to not steal each other’s businesses?

Would they simplify and clarify regu-

lations for new or expanded businesses in town, offering quick approval and one-stop shopping? What other steps might they take to improve the business climate?

What will they do about downtown?

What steps might the candidates suggest to assure that elected officials are given the tools to be fully informed about the key issues facing the city government and to be up to speed on the laws and rules that govern the community?

How do the candidates propose to address the deep divisions in our community, and make religious, racial and

There are signs that the Trump administration might be willing to make a deal.

Its nominees for secretary of state and U.N. ambassador, Rex Tillerson and Nikki Haley, respectively, have no ideological baggage on the issue.

Trump himself tweeted that the United Nations “has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad!”

The Security Council’s anti-settlement resolution has opened up a Pandora’s box in Washington, allowing anyone with a grievance against the world body to have their day in the sun.

But most in Washington believe that despite the body’s problems, the U.S. is better off with a functioning United Nations and should seek as much influence there as possible.

Congress and the Trump administration must be strategic and thoughtful as they chart out what seems to be an inevitable clash.

We are now engaged in campaigns for mayor, alderpersons and school board, and I don’t want to be deceived by political advertising or slogans. I want substance; I want to know what candidates think about the problems we confront, what possible solutions they

Even before Donald Trump’s inauguration as president, Congress is planning to escalate the clash over the U.N. Security Council’s anti-Israel resolution into a full-on conflict between the U.S. and the United Nations.

If Trump embraces the strategy – and all signals indicate he will – the battle could become the Trump administration’s first confrontation with a major international organization, with consequential but largely unpredictable results.

Immediately after the Obama administration abstained Friday from a vote to condemn Israeli settlements as illegal, which passed the Security Council by a 14-0 vote, Republicans and Democrats alike criticized both the United Nations and the U.S. government for allowing what Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., called “a one-sided, biased resolution.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the chairman of the Senate appropriations subcommittee for the State Department and foreign operations, pledged to lead an effort to withhold the U.S. funding that makes up 22 percent of the U.N.’s annual operating budget.

“The U.N. has made it impossible for us to continue with business as usual,” Graham said right after the

vote. “Almost every Republican will feel like this is a betrayal of Israel, and the only response that we have is the power of purse.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, never shy about working with Republicans against the Obama administration, told Graham: “Please stand with us, it’s time to take the gloves off,” Graham said.

In the days since the vote, three Republican senators and their staffs have been working up options behind the scenes for how to convert their threat into action: Graham, Ted Cruz of Texas and Tom Cotton of Arkansas. They believe they will have support for quick Senate action from both Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and incoming Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., a strong supporter of Israel.

Withholding U.S. contributions to the United Nations could be done in different ways.

There are discretionary funds Congress can easily cut off, but the bulk of U.S. support is obligatory, mandated by treaties that Congress has ratified, making them de facto U.S. law. Depending on how drastic the funding cuts are to be, Congress may have to pass new legislation to undo some of the obligations.

DeKalb senior guard Michael Mitchell, who was coming off a career-high 25 points with six 3-pointers against Hampshire, struggled against Marmion with two points on 1-for-11 shooting and missed all six of his attempts from deep.

“Our concern coming in was him and (Vilet),” Marmion coach Joe Currie said. “We made a conscious effort knowing where he was at all times because in previous games, we lost track of shooters, so that puts a lot of pressure on our guys.”

DeKalb took the early advantage, building an 8-2 lead after a layup by sophomore Blake Williams with 3:13 left in the first quarter, but the Cadets answered with a 10-0 run and never trailed the rest of the game.

The Barbs had cut it to 24-22 on a layup by Vilet in the opening minute of the third quarter, but Marmion connected on back-to-back 3-pointers – by Haas and Brandon Currie – and the Cadets’ lead never dipped below six the rest of the way.

“This team has struggled with focus and concentration the whole year,” Biancalana said. “It came back to bite us [Wednesday].”

The Barbs will face Lemont at 3:30 p.m. today in the fifth-place bracket.

Geneva 49, Lemont 34: The top-seeded Vikings kept rolling into the semifinals.

Geneva pulled away in the third quarter and improved to 11-0 on the season with a win over No. 8 seed Lemont.

Dom Navigato scored a team-high 14 points and had nine rebounds, Cole Navigato added 11 points, and Jack McDonald had five points, five rebounds and six assists in the win.

Lemont (6-6) was led by Paul O’Lery, who had 14 points on 7-for-15 shooting and added six rebounds.

The Vikings led 21-15 at halftime and built the lead by outscoring Lem-

ont, 15-8, in the third quarter.

Ridgewood 70, Winnebago 63: There was too much Zachary Rzewnicki.

The Ridgewood player exploded for 36 points on 16-for-30 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds to help the No. 2 seed Rebels advance to the semifinals.

The Rebels (9-2) also got 17 points and nine rebounds from Richie Zacharias, and Josh Carrasquillo added 12 in the win.

The Indians (6-2) had two players finish with a double-double in the loss. Andrew Morrissey had a teamhigh 21 points and 17 rebounds – including six offensive – and Ty Waller finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, including five offensive.

Winnebago led, 51-48, heading into the fourth quarter, but the Rebels outscored the Indians, 22-12, in the final period. Ridgewood also outscored Winnebago, 44-28, in the paint on the night.

South Elgin 57, Schurz 52: With the game coming into the fourth quarter tied at 41, No. 6 seed South Elgin took control in the final period for a win over No. 3 seed Schurz to advance to the semifinals.

The Storm (6-3) had three players in double figures – Collin Uveges (13), Logan Atkins (12) and Vince Miszkrewsz (10) – and finished the game shooting 22 for 39 (56.4 percent) as a team.

The Bulldogs (8-3) got a double-double from Jaland Mitchell, who had 18 points and 11 rebounds and was the only player in double figures in the loss. Nehemiah Watson and Daniel Osorio each scored nine.

DeKALB – The Marmion Academy boys basketball team endured a brutal schedule and entered the Chuck Dayton Classic without a win on its resume.

Now the Cadets are headed to the semifinals.

With DeKalb playing without its best player, Marmion Academy pulled away in the second half to take down the No. 5 seed Barbs, 57-50, in a quarterfinal Wednesday night.

“The fact is they may have played the toughest schedule in the state coming into this tournament,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said of the Cadets, who improved to 2-9 on the season and have beaten two seeded teams in the tournament – along with No. 4 West Chicago on Tuesday.

“The last two nights are no fluke, and now they’re playing with confidence.”

The Barbs (7-3) were without senior point guard Cole Tucker, who suffered an arm injury in the third quarter of their first-round win Tuesday over Hampshire. Tucker warmed up on Wednesday but didn’t play, and Biancalana said that he will not play the rest of the tournament.

While DeKalb grabbed 21 offensive rebounds, the Barbs struggled to gain much traction on the scoreboard. As a team, they finished 1 for 16 from the 3-point line – the lone make coming when senior Derek Kyler connected on a three at the final buzzer. They struggled at the free-throw line, as well, finishing the night 5 for 15.

“With Cole being out, it was a great opportunity for our younger guys, and I think we struggled reading defenses,” Biancalana said. “We have to do a better job of meeting challenges. Just because Cole didn’t play, it doesn’t mean we fold up our tents and don’t compete. It was an opportunity for other guys to really take over some roles, and we just didn’t do it.”

DeKalb got a double-double from junior Marcus Bobo, who had 13 points on 6-for-6 shooting and 12 rebounds – including six on offense.

Senior wing Michael Vilet added 11 points on 5-for-19 shooting for the Barbs.

Marmion Academy sophomore guard Tom Surges scored a game-high 17 points, going 8 for 10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, and senior Sam Doroff added 15 points.

The Cogs had led 20-17 after the first quarter before the Hubs answered to take a 33-28 lead at halftime.

Griffin Hansen scored a team-high 13 points for the Cogs and Justin McNeal and Zach Miller each scored 12 in the loss.

Sycamore loses big: The Spartans lost to Harvest Christian, 69-41, in the seventh-place game of the E.C. Nichols Holiday Classic.

Kaneland falls to BC: Jake Hed led the scoring but the Knights lost, 54-47, to undefeated Burlington Central in a quarterfinal of the Plano Christmas Classic.

Hed finished with 15 points on 4-for-7 shooting for the Knights, who will play Morris at 3:30 p.m. today in the fifthplace consolation bracket.

Sycamore wins again in Oswego: The

Spartans held on in a back-and-forth game for a 41-40 victory over Downers Grove South in the second day of the Oswego East Christmas Classic.

Kate Majerus led the way for the Spartans, scoring a team-high 18 points.

Kylie Feuerbach recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Maria Wright added eight points.

The Spartans (8-3) will play host to Oswego East at 1 p.m. today.

IC blows out Somonauk: Olivia Harvell scored 13 points in the first half, and Indian Creek topped Somonauk, 49-30, at the Amboy tournament.

The Timberwolves play for fifth place at 4:30 p.m. today.

BOYS SWIMMING

Ruetten nabs hardware: DeKalb/Sycamore freshman swimmer David Ruetten earned first-place honors at the Boylan Bash.

In the individual meet, swimmers were able to enter four of the possible five events and scored points based off their performances to place in their respective grades.

Along with Ruetten, Gavin Anderson placed fifth for the Barbs in the freshman category.

Riley Lohse was the runner-up for juniors, and Nathan Braun was third in the sophomore category.

Hawks extend Panarin for 2 years

mlazerus@suntimes.com NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The summer of 2017’s biggest concern just became the summer of 2019’s biggest concern.

In the meantime, the Blackhawks will keep one of the best lines in hockey intact.

The Hawks agreed to a two-year contract extension with Artemi Panarin, according to a source. The deal is worth $6 million a season. Both the length and the cost of the deal are below market value for Panarin, already one of the most prolific scorers in the league in just his second season. The surprising bridge deal was a concession for both sides.

At 25 years old, Panarin was in line for a career-defining contract, and was believed to be asking for a six-year contract worth up to $7 million a season.

But Panarin has made no secret of his desire to stay in Chicago and to continue playing alongside Patrick Kane.

For the Hawks, the short-term nature of the contract gives them some flexibility, but it means Panarin will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2018-19

season.

Tom Lynn, Panarin’s agent, said the hope is the Canadian dollar will rebound and the cap will go up and the Hawks will be able to offer something more long term in two years.

“It was eventually the logical place to land after every other option was discussed at length and ruled out over the last six months,” Lynn said. “[The] Blackhawks have been willing to do in contracts and trades what some other teams have not over the last five years to manage their peculiar situation of too many good players.”

Panarin was slated to be a restricted free agent after this season. He won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year last year with 30 goals and 47 assists, while helping Kane reach career highs in goals and points en route to winning the Hart Trophy as league MVP. He has 15 goals and 22 assists through 37 games this season.

While the extension answered the biggest question of the offseason, it raises many others. The Hawks are right up against the salary cap next season, and the cap is expected to remain flat or go up $1 million to $2 million at most.

So what was the set that Hoiberg called for Butler to deliver like that?

A set that Butler wouldn’t mind being a permanent fixture in the playbook.

“I like that play, I like that play,” Butler insisted. “The way the game was going, I guess I had the hot hand.

So coach, [my teammates] were like ‘make something happen’, so in the end I did just that.”

That doesn’t mean Hoiberg was thrilled with how most of the early part of the game went down. “[Brooklyn] came out with fire; we didn’t,” Hoiberg said. “It’s disappoint-

ing to do that in your own building.

You can’t go through the motions and expect the other team to lay down. It’s another learning experience for us, and we’ve got to get better.”

What was obviously still a work in progress now that the Bulls have all their working pieces is how they finish games. Or more specifically, who finishes games.

In the Monday win over Indiana, the offense went through Dwyane Wade, while Michael Carter-Williams and Butler provided the perimeter defense. That left Rajon Rondo as the odd-man out, sitting out the quarter.

Against Brooklyn (8-23), Rondo was back in the mix, while Wade was battling a migraine headache that hindered him most of the second half.

“You can go back to our first meeting before we opened training camp and that’s all we talked about was sacrifice and togetherness and not caring who gets the credit as long as you win the game,” Hoiberg said.

For the first time since Halloween night, Fred Hoiberg entered a game with a full roster intact.

No concussions, no updates on bone chips, no suspensions because of towels tossed at coaches.

It should have been a no-excuse night.

But these are the Bulls, and schizophrenic performances from game-togame are just a way of life.

Thanks to a Jimmy Butler jumper at the final horn, the Bulls overcame a hapless Brooklyn team in the final minutes, edging out the Nets, 101-99, Wednesday night at the United Center.

A win? Yes. A reason to start believing in this team? Define believe.

The only definite about this team is it has mastered the art of inconsistency. It should just be thankful that

it ran into a Nets team that has now lost 12 straight on the road and doesn’t understand the concept of finishing out a seven-point lead with 2:34 left in the game.

Butler tying a season-high 40 points was a big reason why.

First, Butler fixed his cape and played hero with 27 seconds left, hitting a midrange jumper that put the Bulls up, 99-97, and then after Brook Lopez took it out on twin Robin Lopez with a nasty dunk with 12 seconds left, it was isolation time for Butler once again.

A dribble here, a juke there, and his game-winning jumper was pure, giving the Bulls (16-16) their second straight win. Not bad for a guy who looked like he could have had an early exit after his right ankle buckled with less than five minutes left in the game and he had to be helped to the bench.

“He was phenomenal, obviously,” Hoiberg said of his two-time All-Star.

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Justin Jackson has the last name made for the bright lights at Yankee Stadium.

He had the kind of postseason game worthy of the setting.

“Big city. Big stage,” he said. “We walked into Yankee Stadium and everything kind of really hit us.”

Jackson made his case in the home of the Yankees to become Northwestern’s Mr. December.

Unlike Hall of Fame slugger Reggie Jackson, the Wildcats’ stud running back did his damage one step at a time instead of one swing. Jackson ran for 224 yards and three touchdowns to power Northwestern to only its third bowl victory, 31-24, over No. 22 Pittsburgh in the Pinstripe Bowl on Wednesday.

“Justin’s day will go down as one of the great performances by a Northwestern running back,” coach Pat Fitzgerald said.

Jackson was the straw that stirred Northwestern’s offense in the Bronx and helped etch this performance

alongside the 1948 Rose Bowl and 2012 Gator Bowl victories in the program’s oft-futile history.

Jackson, the game’s MVP, was awed by the lights and monuments at the stadium. But it was a more discreet spot in the locker room Northwestern borrowed from the Yankees that really bowled over Jackson.

“Like, Derek Jeter has peed in that urinal,” he said.

Jackson ran for touchdowns of 8 and 16 yards in the second quarter, then went deep on a 40-yard burst in the third that left one defender face down on the turf after a fantastic fake and gave the Wildcats (7-6) a 21-17 lead.

Rallying without injured quarterback Nathan Peterman and running back James Conner, Pitt yanked the lead away in the fourth on a short TD pass before it collapsed the rest of the quarter.

The Wildcats turned a fourth-and-1 into a 21-yard play-action TD pass that made it 28-24, and a hit late field goal for a seven-point lead.

ur politics is often reflected in our popular culture, and vice versa – especially in an election year. That relationship seemed closer than ever in 2016, when a TV personality was elected president, reality shows and beauty contests were referenced in presidential debates, and even a Broadway show ignited partisan sparring.

At times, it seemed like the election overshadowed everything, but of course there was more. The diversity issue again roiled Hollywood. The old-style musical made a glamorous comeback. One of Hollywood’s most scrutinized couples called it quits. And we said a series of painful goodbyes: to legendary rock stars, cinema and TV greats, and The Greatest himself. Our annual, highly selective journey down pop culture memory lane:

NEW YORK – Winning a Pulitzer Prize and a clutch of Tony Awards in a single one year would be enough for anyone. Not Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Not in 2016.

The “Hamilton” writer-composer picked up those honors and also earned a Golden Globe nomination, won the Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History, wrote music for a top movie, and inspired a best-selling book, a best-selling album of “Hamilton” covers and a popular PBS documentary.

Among the things Miranda did this year were asking Congress to help dig Puerto Rico out of its debt crisis, getting an honorary doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, performing at a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton on Broadway, lobbying to stop gun violence in America and teaming up with Jennifer Lopez on the benefit single “Love Make the World Go Round.”

He and his musical “Hamilton” won 11 Tony Awards in June, but perhaps his deepest contribution that night was tearfully honoring those killed hours before at an Orlando nightclub with a beautiful sonnet: “Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside,” he said. “Now fill the world with music, love and pride.”

He started the year onstage in the Broadway hit “Hamilton” (which in 2015 had won a Grammy and earned Miranda a MacArthur genius grant) and ended it with a Golden Globe nomination for writing the song “How Far I’ll Go” from “Moana,” which was on top of the box office for three weeks this month, earning $165 million.

“I’ve been jumping from thing to thing and what’s been thrilling is to see the projects that happen very quickly kind of exploding side-by-side with the projects I’ve been working on for years,” Miranda said.

Though theater fans have long cherished his fluency in both Stephen Sondheim and Tupac, “Hamilton” helped Miranda break into the mainstream in 2016. The groundbreaking, biographical hip-hop show tells the true story of an orphan immigrant from the Caribbean who rises to the highest ranks of American society, told by a young African-American and Latino cast.

The cast went to the White House in March to perform songs from the show for the first family and answer questions from school children. A version of the show opened in Chicago in October and a production is slated to land in California next year and in London soon.

When the gold-winning U.S. women’s gymnastics team returned from the Rio Olympics, where do you think they wanted to go? “Hamilton,” naturally, which they did in August.

The show’s effects were felt across the nation this year, cheered by politicians, stars and rappers alike and even helping shape the debate over the nation’s currency (Hamilton stays on the $10 bill, in part due to Miranda’s show.)

But the musical also sparked controversy when the cast delivered a pointed message about diversity to Vice President-elect Mike Pence while he attended a performance in November. President-elect Donald Trump demanded an apology, which did not come.

That kerfuffle was part of a “Hamilton”-heavy fall that included an album of celebrity covers and songs called “The Hamilton Mixtape,” as well as a documentary on the show that aired on PBS and attracted more than 3.6 million television viewers.

Erin O’Neill of The Marietta Times said Miranda dominated entertainment news this year but, more importantly, “opened a dialogue about government, the founding of our country and the future of politics in America.”

There’s more Miranda to come in 2017, including filming Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns” with Emily Blunt (due out Christmas 2018) and an ambitious TV and film adaptation of the fantasy trilogy “The Kingkiller Chronicle.”

“I’m back in a planting mode after a harvest,” Miranda said, laughing.

“It’s not over ’til I say it’s over,” says Bernie Sanders to Hillary Clinton, of the fight for the Democratic nomination. Actually, that’s Larry David talking to Kate McKinnon on “Saturday Night Live.” As McKinnon hones her acclaimed, manically ambitious portrayal of Clinton – one of nine actresses to portray her in SNL history – Donald Trump (in real life) clinches the Republican nomination. We’ll have to wait a few months to see who plays him on SNL....

JUNE

The greatest is gone: Muhammad Ali dies at 74 after a three-de-

cade battle with Parkinson’s disease. It’s Clinton’s turn to clinch her party’s nomination, becoming the first woman in U.S. history to lead a major party ticket. At the Tony awards, host James Corden opens with a tribute to the Orlando nightclub shooting victims, and Miranda does the same with a tearful sonnet, declaring that “love is love is love is love.”

Hello, nasty woman: Trump’s frustrated comment about Clinton in their third, extremely contentious debate becomes one

of the more famous exchanges of the season, launching “nasty woman” merchandise like the “Madam President If You’re Nasty” T-shirt. We meet Alec Baldwin’s Trump on SNL. Trump – the real one – tweets: “Alec Baldwin portrayal stinks.” And the candidate’s “grab ’em” comments on “Access Hollywood” emerge, sending his campaign into damage control.

NOVEMBER

Something happens in early November ... what was it again?

Meantime, let’s remember singer Leonard Cohen, dead at 82. Many find themselves singing “Hallelujah,” his much-covered ballad – including a somber McKinnon on “SNL,” a few days after the election. Baldwin reprises Trump, the real Trump settles into meetings at Trump Tower, and his vice president-elect, Mike Pence, goes to Hamilton, where the production appeals to him directly from the stage to work on behalf of all Americans. Pence says he doesn’t mind, but Trump tweets: “Apologize!”

DECEMBER

It’s been quite a year for the musical, and not just on Broadway. “Hairspray Live!” continues the live TV musical fad. And movie audiences are enchanted by a candy-colored, old-fashioned musical ode to Tinseltown itself, “La La Land,” by young director Damien Chazelle. Finally, for those craving a little consistency in this turbulent year, it’s perhaps nice to know that December arrives bearing the same Christmas gift as it did last year: A new “Star Wars” movie.

When shown on TV or in films, CPR may look easy. However, where and how you place your hands on a victim’s chest to perform compressions is very important. So is the rate and depth at which you press on the chest, as well as exactly how and for how long you release.

That’s why it’s critical to get certified training. Classes, which are offered throughout the nation, are interesting and easy. The American Red Cross offers classes, and the American Heart Association has a list of other training centers.

You’ll learn proper CPR technique and also may get trained in the use of an automated external defibrillator, or A.E.D. Although attending an in-person class with fellow students and a mannequin to practice on is optimal, a video on the AHA’s updated method of hands-only CPR is available online.

A final thought: Between 70 and 80 percent of sudden cardiac arrests occur in or near the home. Why not make CPR certification a family, neighborhood or even community project? Everyone will be just that much safer.

Dear Doctors: A woman in the mall near our home collapsed and wasn’t breathing. A shopper performed CPR until the paramedics showed up. Later, my friends and I realized none of us could have helped her. Should we get trained in CPR? Dear Reader: Only a small percentage of the population in the United States knows how to perform CPR, so the woman you and your friends saw was lucky. As you can probably guess, our answer is yes; learning proper CPR technique is a very good idea.

More than 350,000 people a year in the U.S. suffer from sudden cardiac arrest, which is when the heart abruptly stops beating. Although heart arrhythmias and heart disease are the major causes of sudden cardiac arrest, heart function also may stop due to near drowning, smoke inhalation, asthma attack, poisoning or even a severe allergic reaction.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, really does make a difference. It consists of two separate components – chest compression and mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing.

(According to the latest American Heart Association guidelines, only individuals who are trained in CPR should attempt rescue breathing.)

When someone goes into cardiac arrest and stops breathing, the first few minutes are critical. Studies show the survival rate of someone in cardiac arrest can double or triple when prompt and high-quality CPR is performed.

So what happens when you perform CPR? Your body needs oxygen to survive. When your heart suddenly stops beating, the biological chain of events that provides you with oxygen also stops. Without that oxygen, cells begin to die. Brain damage can occur in just 4 or 5 minutes, and death in 8 to 10 minutes.

The purpose of CPR is to keep oxygenated blood flowing to the victim’s brain and

South is in four hearts. West leads the spade queen, which wins the trick, and continues with the spade 10. After declarer ruffs that, how many rounds of trumps should he immediately draw: zero, one, two or three?

When North rebid one no-trump, South just went with the known eight- or nine-card heart fit. (North would not have bid no-trump with a singleton heart. With, for example, 3-1-5-4 distribution, he would have rebid two clubs.) In this deal, a raise to three no-trump would have worked fine too, but that was far from obvious with the singleton spade.

Declarer might concede four tricks: one spade, one diamond and two clubs. He must eliminate a club loser. One chance is to find the suit splitting 3-3, but that happens only one time in three. If the clubs are 4-2, South has to ruff his last club on the board. Since this requires only one trump, some players would think that they could afford to draw two rounds of trumps -- but not here. When East wins a club trick, he leads his last trump to kill the ruff.

Declarer should draw one round of trumps, then play three rounds of clubs.
