Parents can protect children from sex abuse

Child sexual abuse is an unpleasant topic, but one that must be addressed with children, teenagers, parents, teachers and with anyone who works with children.

Recent events in our community have once again brought to light the all-too-often hidden truth about child sexual abuse. Let us not forget, however, that abuse of children is something that happens every day in DeKalb County and everywhere else.

No doubt that when cases come to the forefront regarding a teacher or a coach, it leaves us with an undeniable desire to find the answer to the question, “How could this have happened?”

Child sexual abuse is cloaked in secrecy and perpetuated by offenders who not only groom their victims, but groom the entire community by showing and proving to all around them that they can be trusted.

This is not limited to teachers and coaches. The secrecy, the intimidation and the shame encompass all offenders of sexual abuse. This might be a parent, stepparent or grandparent.

It has nothing to do with gender, race, income or education level. The National Center for Victims of Crime states that one in five girls are victims of child sexual abuse and one in 20 boys are victims.

It also states that children ages 7 to 13 are the most vulnerable for being sexually abused. Let’s get a clear picture of that.

Statistically speaking, there are about three girls and one boy in every second- through seventh-grade classroom that have been or will be sexually abused. That is the sad and brutal truth of child abuse.

The light at the end of the tunnel is that there are many things that can be done to ensure the safety of children. One of the most important is having open communication with your child about body safety and safe relationships. You can start doing this at a very young age. It is a conversation that should be repeated often. If by the time they are 9, your child rolls their eyes and says, “I know! You have told me this a thousand times!” then you know you have done a good job.

The Children’s Advocacy Center (fsadekalbcounty.org) is the only agency in the DeKalb County that works with law enforcement, the state’s attorney’s office, child protection, medical providers and trauma counselors to ensure that the trauma of child abuse is lessened as much as possible.

We provide child abuse education to school personnel, parents, child care centers, social service agencies, and anyone working with children. We also provide Erin’s Law (erinslawillinois.org) presentations to elementary through high school students in DeKalb County.

DeKalb police chief reverses his recommendation

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – A recommendation by the DeKalb Police Department to approve a conditional liquor license for the House Café could be enough to keep the business financially afloat.

DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery reversed a recommendation to not approve a liquor license for the business this month after his initial decision was made public via the House Café’s Facebook page. Lowery changed his stance after one person was removed from ownership of the business.

The recommendation for a license will be considered by aldermen at the Jan. 9 City Council meeting. The House could wind up with a conditional license that would require follow-up meetings with city officials to ensure there are no operational concerns, city documents show.

The House needs to generate several hundred dollars more a day in sales to cover operational costs – a figure that can be achieved through alcohol sales, owner Mark Robinson said.

“That puts me in a very tight spot, that I have revenue that I’m not able to gather,” Robinson said. “It’s a market that’s there for my business. We just can’t do it. We can’t meet the numbers without that revenue.”

Lowery made his initial recommendation after the owners’ criminal histories – non-alcohol-related misdemeanors – were revealed, City Attorney Dean Frieders said. However, the recommendation was changed after Martha Robinson was removed from the license application after a meeting with city officials, Frieders said.

Martha Robinson also was removed as one of the owners of Three-legged Enterprises LLC, an Illinois company that owns the House, Frieders said.

“One hundred percent ownership is with Mark,” he said.

Frieders declined to comment on the reason for Martha’s exclusion. Documents provided by the city in response to a Freedom of Information Act request shed no light on the question, either.

“The city has an obligation to ensure that any licensed liquor establishment is going to be very carefully and judiciously managed,” Frieders said. “We want to work in a collaborative fashion to ensure that the business can operate and be productive and be a contributing part of the downtown without creating any public safety concerns.”

Martha Robinson said that Mark Robinson handles most of the day-today operations, while she, as an experienced business owner, strives for the safety of the House Café’s patrons.

She has owned and operated Martha’s

Kitchen, 302 E. Van Buren St. in Malta, for more than two years.

City officials “are accountable for what they do, so they have to proceed with a lot of caution, and I completely understand that,” she said. “You don’t want anybody hurt.”

The positive recommendation comes more than two months after the House Café reopened its doors. Former co-owners did not publicly announce why the venue closed in August, but Mark said it was because of the loss of their liquor license.

“It’s just not a sustainable model,” Mark Robinson said. “If it were up to me, I wouldn’t worry about the liquor … but that’s not the point. The point is literally the business side of it.”

Aldermen will take information from all sides into account when they take the decision to a vote, Frieders

said.

“The House is really a critical cultural anchor in the city,” Frieders said. “It’s a positive contributor to the downtown, and … everyone involved recognizes that.”

Mark Robinson said he is looking into alternative sources of revenue, including extending opening hours to the morning and hosting a weekly classical concert. Other endeavors, such as yoga classes and wedding receptions, already are underway.

“I spend most of my time in service-oriented positions,” he said. “To me, it’s important for people to understand that I’m here to help out our arts community.”

Park board OKs splash pad design Project expected to be finished by summer 2018

SYCAMORE – Sycamore is one step closer to having a splash pad after the Sycamore Park Board approved design plans for the facility this week.

“I think that once they see it, families with young kids are going to fall in love with it,” Sycamore Park Board President Ted Strack said. He said that he expected the splash pad to be as popular, if not more popular, than the park district’s pool.

The park district plans to break ground on the $450,000 project in April.

It is expected to be finished and open to the public by summer 2018.

The board approved a concept design Thursday from Vortex Aquatic Structures International, Sycamore Park District Executive Dan Gibble said. The chosen design was one of five that were submitted to the Sycamore Park District by four different companies.

Vortex Aquatic Structures International, headquartered in Montreal, has installed more than 6,500 aquatic play features in 45 countries, according to its website.

Over the past year, a volunteer splash pad advisory committee met with architects, visited splash pads in other communities and talked with people who operate those facilities to come up with ideas for the Sycamore

The Sycamore Park Board approved the splash pad design at its Thursday meeting. The $450,000 splash pad is part of Sycamore Park District’s Action 2020 plans and is scheduled for completion in summer 2018. splash park, Gibble said.

The committee came up with a nature theme for the design “with flowing water vertically and along the ground like a river,” Gibble said.

The Vortex design was unanimously recommended by both the committee and the park board, Gibble said.

The park district has collected more than $70,000 in donations for the splash pad, including contributions from the Sycamore Kiwanis Club and First Mid-

west Bank, Gibble said.

The district is working raise $1 million as part of its Leaf a Legacy campaign. So far, about $930,000 has been raised, Strack said. If the campaign exceeds its $1 million goal, any extra funding could be used for additional amenities at any of the facilities in the Action 2020 plan.

The splash pad is part of the Action 2020 plan along with a new community center, dog park, sled hill, trail connec-

tions, golf course irrigation and updated sports complex.

The splash pad will be located on the recreation campus between the dog park and community center along Airport Road.

Chess camp, tournament offered in DeKalb DAILY CHRONICLE The Beloved Community, an organization dedicated to bringing together DeKalb-area residents and furthering cultural understanding, and the DeKalb Chess Club are partnering for the 2016 winter holidays.

Together, they are offering a free three-day chess camp, which will be of value to beginners, as well as to those with a chess background wishing to show off their moves.

The camp will be followed by a

communitywide tournament Friday.

Tournament participants need not have attended the camps.

There is no cost to attend either the camps or to participate in the tournament, but donations and sponsorships will be accepted to support the trophies and awards – and further cooperative programming.

The location for both events is First Congregational Church, 615 N. First St. in DeKalb.

Half-day camps will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 4:30

p.m. Wednesday to Friday. The topics covered will be independent, and participants may attend one or all of the sessions.

The Friday tournament will feature four rounds of competition with sections to be determined based on skill levels of the registrants.

Awards will be provided to all school-aged participants.

On-site check-in will begin at 6 p.m., with the first games beginning around 6:20 p.m. and concluding by 9 p.m.

Registration for both the camps and the tournament can be completed by sending an email to bill@dekalbchess.com. Provide names, grade levels and/or adult status. All ages and skill levels are welcome.

Transportation assistance is available, and all equipment is provided.

Dems weigh 2018 challenge for governor

CHICAGO – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner sent two clear signals when he dumped $50 million into his campaign fund: The 2018 race for Illinois governor will be a rough one, and the contest starts now.

What’s still unknown is which Democrats will try to unseat the multimillionaire former businessman.

Among those contemplating a bid are U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, businessman Chris Kennedy, state Sen. Andy Manar and billionaire investor J.B. Pritzker, according to potential candidates and aides.

In a glimpse of what’s to come, the Democratic Governors Association said Rauner is “more focused on getting elected than passing a budget or growing Illinois’ economy,” and that his cash infusion “won’t make Illinois voters forget about his past 2 years of failure.”

Illinois Republican Party spokesman Steven Yaffe fired back that the election will “present a clear choice between those like Gov. Rauner who want to reform state government so it works for the taxpayers and those who will simply raise taxes without reforming the status quo in order to protect the political insiders and special interests.”

Police: Majority of holiday violence is gang-related

CHICAGO – Chicago police said more than 40 people were shot over the holiday weekend and more than three dozen guns were seized.

Autopsy scheduled for man found dead in Christmas fire

BRIGHTON – An autopsy has been scheduled for an 83-year-old man found dead Christmas morning after a fire broke out in his southwestern Illinois garage.

The Macoupin County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Thomas J. Vernatti of Brighton. The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reported that an autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

Authorities said Vernatti lived alone at the address.

Fire officials and police were called around 2 a.m. Sunday. The Illinois Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted to inves-

tigate the fire.

Brighton is about 75 miles from Springfield.

QUINCY – A one-time music store employee and rock musician is the unlikely point man in the renovation of 123-year-old church organ in western Illinois.

The (Quincy) Herald-Whig reported that Phil Hoenig is restoring the Unitarian Church’s Steere pipe organ. It’s Quincy’s oldest continually operating organ, though it’s been without key parts that mimic clarinet sounds since the 1970s.

Hoenig taught himself how to repair old organs. The first he worked on had 1,444 pipes. The Unitarian’s has 900.

AURORA – The 2017 race for mayor in Illinois’ second-largest city is taking shape.

Five candidates submitted petitions last month, but one has dropped out.

Kremlin downplays terror attack possibility in jet crash

SOCHI, Russia – The Kremlin on Monday played down the possibility that a terror attack might have downed a Syria-bound Russian plane, killing all 92 people on board, as the nation observed a day of mourning for the victims, including most members of a world famous military choir.

The Tu-154 owned by the Russian Defense Ministry crashed into the Black Sea early Sunday two minutes after taking off in good weather from the city of Sochi.

The plane was carrying members of the Alexandrov Ensemble, often referred to as the Red Army Choir, to a New Year’s concert at a Russian military base in Syria.

About 3,500 people, 43 ships and 182 divers have been sweeping a vast crash site for bodies of the victims and debris, and dozens of drones and several submersibles also have been involved in the search.

Rescue teams so far have recovered 11 bodies and numerous body fragments, which have been flown to Moscow for identification.

Divers have located parts of the plane’s fuselage and other fragments, but the search for the jet’s flight recorders will likely prove challenging as they lack underwater locator beacons for easy spotting common in more modern planes.

Officials sought to squelch speculation that the crash might have been caused by a bomb planted on board or a portable air defense

missile.

But some aviation experts pointed that the crew’s failure to communicate any technical problem and a large area over which fragments of the plane were scattered point at a possible explosion on board.

Evidence of a bombing of a Syria-bound military flight would badly embarrass the Kremlin, highlighting Russia’s extreme vulnerability to attacks even as it boasts its success in Syria after Aleppo fell into President Bashar Assad’s hands.

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters that an attack isn’t a likely scenario. Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov, who oversaw the rescue efforts, said investigators were looking into a possible technical fault or pilot error as the most likely reasons behind the crash.

But some experts remained skeptical, noting that the crew would have reported any technical glitch.

“Possible malfunctions ... certainly wouldn’t have prevented the crew from reporting them,” Vitaly Andreyev, a former senior Russian air traffic controller, told RIA Novosti, adding that an “external impact” was the most likely reason.

Russia’s main domestic security and counter-terrorism agency, the FSB, said it has found “no indications or facts pointing at the possibility of a terror attack or an act of sabotage on board the plane.”

Trump’s pick for ambassador to Israel debated

NEW YORK – If President-elect Donald Trump wanted to show he planned to obliterate President Barack Obama’s approach to Israel, he might have found his man to deliver that message in David Friedman, his pick for U.S. ambassador.

The bankruptcy lawyer and son of an Orthodox rabbi is everything Obama is not: a fervent supporter of Israeli settlements, opponent of David Palestinian statehood Friedman and unrelenting defender of Israel’s government. So far to the right is Friedman that many Israel supporters worry he could push Israel’s hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be more extreme, scuttling prospects for peace with Palestinians in the process.

The heated debate over Friedman’s

selection is playing out just as fresh tensions erupt between the U.S. and Israel.

In a stunning decision Friday, the Obama administration moved to allow the U.N. Security Council to pass a resolution condemning Israeli settlements as illegal. The move to abstain, rather than veto, defied years of U.S. tradition of shielding Israel from such resolutions, and elicited condemnation from Israel, lawmakers of both parties, and especially Trump.

“Things will be different after Jan. 20th,” when he’s sworn in, Trump vowed Friday on Twitter. On Monday, he added: “The United Nations has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad!”

Presidents of both parties have long called for a two-state solution that envisions eventual Palestinian statehood, and Netanyahu says he agrees.

Friedman, who still must be confirmed by the Senate, does not. He’s called the

Under Obama, the U.S. has worked closely with J Street, an Israel advocacy group sharply critical of Netanyahu. Friedman accuses Obama of “blatant anti-Semitism” and calls J Street “worse than kapos,” a reference to Jews who helped the Nazis imprison fellow Jews during the Holocaust.

For decades, the U.S. has opposed Israeli settlement-building in lands it seized in the 1967 Mideast war. Friedman runs a nonprofit that raises mil-

lions of dollars for Beit El, a settlement of religious nationalists near Ramallah. Beit El runs a right-wing news outlet and a yeshiva whose dean has provocatively urged Israeli soldiers to refuse orders to uproot settlers from their homes.

So it’s unsurprising that Friedman’s nomination has already sharpened a growing balkanization of American Jews, between those who want the U.S. to push Israel toward peace and those who believe Obama’s approach abandoned America’s closest Mideast ally.

It’s a debate playing out even at Temple Hillel, near the Long Island-Queens border, where Friedman’s father was rabbi for almost half a century.

“Clearly, David’s opinions do not appeal to everybody in the synagogue, and they appeal to others in the synagogue,” said Ken Fink, the synagogue’s president and longtime congregant.

“But there’s a huge amount of pride for the hometown boy.”

Obama vs. Trump: Dispute erupts over who would have won

HONOLULU – In an alternate universe in which President Barack Obama ran for a third term against Donald Trump, who would have won?

No surprise: The president and the president-elect disagree.

A fresh dispute erupted Monday between Obama and his successor, spurred by Obama’s hypothetical musings that had he run again, he would have been victorious. Interviewed for a podcast, Obama suggested he still holds enough sway over the coalition of voters that elected him twice to get them to vote for him once again.

“I am confident in this vision because I’m confident that if I had run again and

articulated it, I think I could’ve mobilized a majority of the American people to rally behind it,” Obama told his former White House adviser, David Axelrod, in a podcast released Monday.

Trump, naturally, disagreed. He took to his preferred medium – Twitter – to offer his reaction.

“President Obama said that he thinks he would have won against me.

He should say that but I say NO WAY!” Trump wrote.

He suggested Obama’s record would have prevented him from securing a victory, citing jobs that have left the U.S., troubles with Obama’s Affordable Care Act and the ongoing threat posed by the Islamic State group as examples.

The White House declined to comment on Trump’s tweet.

In the podcast, Obama didn’t address whether he would have been able to surmount the obstacle that the Electoral College posed for Hillary Clinton. The Democrat failed to secure a majority of electoral votes despite winning the popular vote by millions.

Yet Obama said he’s spoken to people across the U.S. who have told him the direction he pursued “is the right one,” a sentiment he said extends even to some people “who disagreed with me.” He suggested Democrats’ failure in the election may have stemmed from the prevailing assumption that Clinton’s victory was all but assured.

“If you think you’re winning, then you have a tendency – just like in sports – maybe to play it safer,” Obama said.

Although Obama railed against

Trump during the campaign, he’s largely held his tongue since the Republican’s Election Day victory, in large part to ensure a smooth transition of power.

He and Trump have spoken regularly by phone, and Trump has praised his predecessor for the graciousness with which he’s handled the process.

But in recent days, points of tension between their two teams have started to emerge, driven by Trump’s picks of Cabinet nominees who have vowed to dismantle much of what Obama has accomplished. The Obama administration has also been dismayed by requests from Trump’s team for information they fear could be used to try to identify and then eliminate bureaucrats who have worked on Obama priorities such as climate change and women’s rights overseas.

Fake guns, real tragedies “We’re talking about this 26 years later, and I’m not sure anything has really changed except that tragic occurrences continue to happen.” So commented Chuck Wexler of the Police Executive Research Forum about fatal police shootings involving people with toy, air and replica guns.

That Wexler’s comments were made to reporters undertaking what amounts to the first real study of this issue in decades speaks volumes about the lack of progress in coming up with solutions to this problem. And that underscores the need to break the stranglehold the national gun lobby has managed to place on scientific research into gun violence.

As part of its ongoing examination of fatal shootings by police started in 2015, The Post examined what police across the country say are increasing faceoffs against people with toy or replica guns that are so realistic they look identical to real weapons.

At least 86 people over the past two years were killed in these encounters, according to the “Fatal Force” report, the first accounting since a study in 1990, when Congress last addressed the issue.

Other revelations from the Post report: Mental illness was a common theme, white men were the majority of victims, and the calls included domestic disturbances, robberies and neighborhood patrols.

Some cases were heartbreaking, such as the mentally distraught 52-year-old killed in front of his family and the 16-year-old boy shot after a breakup with a girl. Police, confronted with realistic imitations indistinguishable from the real thing and people who don’t comply with their orders, should not be blamed. It is clear they, too, often become victims.

“Some of them broke down in tears. ... It’s a devastating careerlong and lifelong impact,” Alachua County, Florida, Sheriff Sadie Darnell said of the officers who shot the 16-year-old and later realized the assault weapon the teen was aiming was fake.

The National Rifle Association and some manufacturers of the toy and replica guns refused to talk to Post reporters. Not surprising: They never have been fans of open inquiry, as evidenced by their success in choking off federally funded gun research and exploration of new technology that would make guns safer.

Really, how hard is it to design a toy that can’t be mistaken for a gun? And what purposes do realistic replicas serve? The Post report raises some important questions. It is time to at least start looking for the answers.

After seeing President-elect Trump’s nominations and appointments, I’ve had a third thought: Trump looks as if he is setting up something of a coup with his family and the alt-right as his closest advisers, a Cabinet and “security” agencies dominated by retired military, and a gang of multibillionaire heads of federal departments who could, if they wanted, fund a federal coup all by themselves.

It looks like President-elect Trump is going to do things quite differently from “the establishment” he ran against. But for what purpose?

I hope it is to make the federal government more focused on making America great again. But the only way that is going to happen is if President Trump can re-energize the institutions that made America

great in the first place, especially the bureaucracy, the Fourth Estate, and the American people.

The bureaucracy must commit itself to doing its job while being vigilant about what it is being asked to do. The press must engage in critical thinking and honest investigative reporting, and be brave enough to report what it finds, not just what is politically correct in the Trump era.

The American people must say something if we see something.

What we see may all be as positive as what we’ve been promised.

I hope so. But, weaknesses in our social institutions are what produced presidential campaigns that were anything but honest communications of what candidates planned and how they were going to deliver on their promises; presidential debates that produced

anything but informative answers to critical questions on important issues; and news coverage that was anything but reporting on things that actually happened and words that were actually said.

In this post-truth/fake-news world, giving the reins of power to billionaires who have been motivated by self-interest their entire lives, never having chosen to serve previously as “public servants,” and to military leaders who have opposed the policies and practices of their superiors and previous commanders-in-chief, the institutions that have functioned to protect us from ourselves before may have to work better and more energetically than they have recently.

As I said, I hope they do.

Marathon station planned for former Sycamore Wendy’s

SYCAMORE – A company has plans to move its Sycamore Marathon gas station to the former Wendy’s location at 439 E. State St. The Sycamore City Council approved a request Dec. 19 from Western Trail Outpost LLC for a special-use permit to operate a gas station within 660 feet of a residential area.

Western Trail Outpost is a sister company of Carls Oil Company, which operates the Corral Marathon Station at 503 E. State St. Randy Carls, president of Carls Oil, told the council that if his company goes through with its plans for a new

station, it would also close the old station, removing the tanks, dispensers and canopy to make way for a commercial development.

“The goal is to pull the tanks within a year after the new place opens,” Carls said. “We’re mandated to do that with [the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency] after we discontinue use.”

City Manager Brian Gregory said the 439 E. State St. property has been on the market since the Wendy’s restaurant was demolished after it was damaged in a January 2015 fire.

For some it was a year of struggles and challenges, especially for those of us in the state of Illinois. Others remember a year of celebration that included a Chicago Cubs World Series Championship. That’s something I still enjoy seeing and hearing and it will never get old. In either case, it’s still a point of view of the same calendar year, 2016, but yet a very different way of remembering it.

The same can be true for most things in life. Some of us are external optimists that always find the good things and choose to remember those while others can’t see past the negative to notice the positive.

It’s been said that we all have a negative and positive monster inside of us and it’s the one we choose to feed the most that is the most dominant. Often times you can see that when you look at the expression on someone’s face when you see them. A greeting smile or a warning scowl will tell you without a word what this person is feeling.

Focusing on the challenges is an important part of making things better in any situation but it should not be done at the expense of enjoying the great things that we experience. Be sure to celebrate the wins and good things that happen in life to provide an appreciation of what life has to offer.

Many times we choose to focus on what we don’t have or can’t do instead of appreciating and excelling in what we do have and what we can do.

Carls said his company is working on a few ideas for potential uses of the property.

“We don’t want to see it go dark,” Carls said. “I’m pretty confident that you’ll see something there and functional.”

Gregory said the fueling stations would face east and west so that cars’ headlights would not face toward the homes on East State Street, and Carls plans to add shrubbery along the east

and south sides of the property.

Dark sky lighting fixtures would also be used to minimize the light spilling into neighboring properties.

The company plans to design the new station and convenience store similarly to its station in Campton Hills called “The Outpost.”

Decor would include a 1941 international truck, a canopy with a shingled-roof look, and support poles painted to look like wood.

Antique gas station memorabilia, rough sawn lumber and brick accent material would be used inside the convenience store.

“We’ve worked in the community for a long time, and we look forward to many more years,” Carls said.

No. 10: Naegele breaks NIU single-season softball home run record with walkoff

Northern Illinois catcher Emily Naegele went into the record books in dramatic fashion.

With a mid-season game against Ball State tied at 4 and heading into the bottom of the ninth, Naegele smacked a solo home run to break the record for most homers in a single season in program history. The home run was her 16th of the season, breaking the record of teammate Kayti Grable, who hit 15 the previous year.

Naegele put together one of the best offensive seasons in Huskie history, hitting .404 with 20 home runs and 56 RBIs and was a third-team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and named first-team allMAC. The Huskies finished 35-20 overall and 13-10 in the MAC West.

No. 9: Smith rolls back-to-back perfect games in regionals

Trevor Smith picked the perfect time for his first career perfect game – technically, his first two.

As a junior last season for Sycamore, he rolled a pair of 300s at the Marengo Regional, helping him win the postseason tournament by 85 pins.

“It was crazy,” Smith said a couple of days after his January feat. “I hardly remember the 10th frame. The adrenaline gets going and you just want to do it so bad.”

Heading into the final race of the Class 2A Girls Track and Field State Championships, the Knights needed to take first for a chance at becoming the co-state champions.

The 1,600-meter relay team of Nicole Sreenan, Carly Bartholomew, Allie Heinzer and Jamie Martens delivered.

The group led nearly the entire race and finished with a first-place time of 3 minutes, 56.15 seconds – more than a second faster than the second-place team from Springfield Southeast.

“It’s a dream come true for my senior year, I couldn’t ask for anything more for my teammates,” said Heinzer, who also took fourth in the 200 dash.

With the win in the 1,600 relay, the Knights finished with 53 points, tied with co-champion Cahokia. It was the best finish for Kaneland since they won back-to-back Class A titles in 1987-88.

No. 4: DeKalb volleyball team, eight points from loss, comes back against No. 1 Huntley

In a DeKalb postseason that featured Hannah Oehlberg rack up 26 kills in a regional final match, the most memorable win for the Barbs came in a contest they were eight points from losing.

The Barbs beat Huntley in the semifinals of the Class 4A Huntley Sectional, 19-25, 25-21, 25-12. DeKalb trailed 17-13 in the second set when Oehlberg spurred the comeback, finishing with 21 kills after the 26-kill performance in the previous round.

It wasn’t just a walkoff, or even a walkoff home run. No, Jack Mizgalski hit a walkoff grand slam.

His Spartans were down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh in a Class 3A Sycamore Regional Semifinal. Mizgalski was struggling – 0 for 3 in the game, plus he gave up a three-run homer that put Mendota ahead.

The game was like a seesaw to the end – Mendota led 1-0, the Spartans then had six straight batters reach in the sixth to a take a 3-1 lead. Then Mizgalski, the starter for Sycamore, gave the lead back at 4-3 after the threerun blast.

“I was thinking the entire time I had to pick my team up because they did that for me for all game,” Mizgalski said. “I didn’t remember much after that.”

But Mizgalski’s walkoff grand slam sparked something in Sycamore, which entered the postseason as the No. 4 seed in the Rochelle Sectional. The Spartans beat No. 2 Burlington Central, 10-6, to win the regional. “I told the kids don’t let this be the memory of the season,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said after the loss to Vernon Hills. “There were a lot of good things that happened to get it to this point. Nobody thought – we were crashing a lot of parties to get to this point.”

John Fox said the message hasn’t changed and that the players know that there is pride and future to think about Sunday in Minnesota.

“Again, we’re evaluating and I think our guys understand that. I think at this stage, there are a lot of people who have nothing left to play for,” Fox said Monday. “… As I even mentioned Saturday, our guys are still competing.

They’re working hard. They’re practicing hard. There’s no splintering.”

Veteran Jerrell Freeman has never

been on a losing team in his four NFL seasons, making the playoffs in his first three with the Colts. He explained how as football players, they need to be “programmed” to focus on the task ahead.

“You still have to be a professional,” he said. “Got to go about it week after week going through it the same way.

Our next opponent is a good team. Got to be able to move on. As a professional, every snap, every play, every series, quarter or game, we’re programmed to move forward.”

Most members of the defense are rookies or second-year players, and Freeman said it’s important for them to know about the ongoing evaluations.

“Just help them understand, everybody has a job to do,” he said. “I said before, if you’re not going to do

it, they’ll bring somebody else in that will. You’ve got to have that attitude and go out there and go to work and make sure you’re doing everything you need to do to prepare and try to put your best foot forward when you go out on the field.”

Historically low takeaways: The defense has created 10 turnovers this season, set to shatter last year’s record for a franchise-low of 17. Matt Barkley’s five interceptions brought the overall ratio to minus-16, tied for 30th in the NFL. “It’s not a good formula when you’re minus-16, so that’s two-sided,” Fox said. “I think our interception total’s up where we’ve thrown 17 interceptions, five this past game, so both sides of that are why we’re sitting here at 3-12.”

Meredith’s ascension: In addition to the strong play from rookies Jordan Howard and Cody Whitehair, second-year wideout Cameron Meredith has taken advantage of his opportunity as a starting receiver, leading the team in catches (62) and receiving yards (827).

The former college quarterback said route running is something that he’s improved the most.

“When I first started playing receiver, [route running] was one of the main things I really constantly focused on. It’s different once you get into the league,” he said. “Guys are faster, stuff like that. Getting in and out of my breaks, stuff like that, being physical at the point of attack, those are all things I’m still working on, but I’m definitely getting better at it.”

“Well sure, it’s a very important point of our season,” coach Fred Hoiberg said, as the Bulls ended a three-game losing streak with a 90-85 win over Indiana on Monday.

Not just important because of where the Bulls (15-16) currently sit in the standings, as much as what they can now feast on.

The win over the Pacers was just the first of seven consecutive games against Eastern Conference teams, with five of them being played at the United Center.

In other words, with a third of the season in the books, time for this team to start flexing some muscle if it wants to be considered a playoff team. Not a lot to ask for considering it’s the Cleveland Cavaliers in the East, with Toronto and Boston playing the role of pretenders. After that? Pick your poison.

Any poison.

Even so, Indiana wasn’t going to just hand it to the home team.

After a first quarter in which the Bulls outscored the Pacers (15-17), 2819, and completely dominated them on the boards 16-8, it wouldn’t be Bulls basketball if they didn’t take a quarter off.

This time it was the third, as a 51-41 halftime lead disappeared in the next 12 minutes, as Indiana outscored the Bulls, 20-12, and entered the fourth down just a bucket.

A script played out far too often by this group.

“You look around the league, and pretty much every team has gone through a stretch like we’re going through right now maybe with the exception of Golden State and San Antonio,” Hoiberg said. “Pretty much everybody has gone through some type of adversity. Some have fought out of it, and some haven’t. We got to be one of those teams that finds a way to fight through it.

“Again, I believe in these guys. I do.

I absolutely do. We got to go out there and believe in each other, and they got to believe it can happen. That’s where it starts and again, getting back to the basics and doing what we were doing early that made us a fairly successful basketball team.”

That fight did show up in the fourth, and more importantly when it mattered.

Nursing a two-point lead with 1:26 left, Jimmy Butler did what he does best – attacked the rim and drew the foul. He made both free throws to make it an 84-80 lead. All-Star Paul George cut it to two, but Taj Gibson hit a midrange jumper to keep the Bulls in front by four.

Tips on assembling a first-aid kit Dear Doctors: Our young son fell off his skateboard recently, and the items my wife and I needed to tend to his cuts and scrapes were scattered throughout the house. Now we want to assemble a home first-aid kit.

What should it contain?

Dear Reader: Great idea! A well-stocked first-aid kit is an important safety feature for every home. And while first-aid kits are available to buy, you easily can put one together yourself.

Take an afternoon to evaluate your family needs, make a list, then hit your local drugstore. With just a little bit of planning, you’ll be ready to handle the minor bumps and mishaps of everyday life at a moment’s notice.

With a home first-aid kit, you’re preparing to deal with three basic types of medical issues – injury, infection and allergy.

Everyday injuries include scrapes, cuts, splinters, burns, sprains and stings. Infections might range from an inflamed wound to fever, a sore throat or the flu.

You’ll also want to be prepared for common allergic reactions such as the rash from poison oak and poison ivy, and itching and swelling from insect stings.

It’s important if anyone in your family has severe food allergies or a respiratory condition such as asthma, you stock a backup of the appropriate medication.

Mark each item with its expiration date and replace as needed. It’s a good idea to keep a separate checklist, which will make it easy to know when it’s time to replace that inhaler or EpiPen. So how do you build a first-aid kit?

Start with a container such as a plastic storage tub, a tackle box or a tote bag with separate compartments. It should be easy to open, easy to carry and have enough room for everything to be organized and recognizable at a glance.

For a family of four to deal with common emergencies, you should have: • 2 absorbent compress dressings • 25 adhesive bandages of assorted sizes • 1 adhesive cloth tape • Antibiotic ointment and antiseptic wipes • Ibuprofen • Acetaminophen • An instant cold compress • Non-latex gloves to be worn when dealing with blood or bodily fluids • Hydrocortisone ointment • A pair of scissors and a set of tweezers • A 3-inch and a 4-inch roller bandage • 10 sterile gauze pads (3 by 3 inches and 4 by 4 inches) • An oral thermometer that is not glass and does not contain mercury • 2 triangular bandages • A good first-aid instruction booklet Rather than in the bathroom, where humidity may affect the contents, keep your first-aid kit in the kitchen. It’s also wise to consider a version of this kit for your car.

Finally, read through the first-aid instruction booklet on a regular basis. You don’t want to be holding a page open while you’re trying to bandage a sprained ankle.

recently realized my mother-in-law stole several of my prized possessions. It seems my husband’s brothers, who helped us move when we lost our home, took the items (obviously at her request and with her approval) instead of placing them in the storage unit as instructed.

I am furious at her and my husband’s brothers. I want to confront her and let her know I am aware of her betrayal, but my husband is a great man, and I hate to hurt him in this process.
