Houston reservoir reborn as public space, canvas for art

HOUSTON – Houston’s first underground drinking water reservoir – a decades-old collection of more than 200 concrete columns inside a cavernous space near downtown – had been unused for years and was set for demolition when a nonprofit group reimagined it as something new: a public space.

The 87,500-square-foot space, dubbed the “Cistern” and reminiscent of ancient European water reservoirs, opened its doors to visitors in May. Then earlier this month, the structure’s darkened pillars and walls became the canvas for a piece of modern art.

“Repurposing it for a contemporary audience is the perfect solution,” said Judy Nyquist, a board member with the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, which incorporated the reservoir as part of a $58 million park renovation project.

It’s the latest example of efforts by U.S. cities – including Atlanta; Buffalo, New York; Philadelphia; San Francisco; and Washington, D.C. – to repurpose abandoned and dilapidated pieces of infrastructure as public spaces.

Urban planners see the preservation of historic buildings and other structures as essential in creating the kinds of communities people want to live in, said Stephanie Meeks, president and CEO of the Washington, D.C.based National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Probably the best-known project is New York City’s High Line, an abandoned elevated railroad section converted into a park in 2009.

It has shown cities that such pieces of infrastructure can be diamonds in the rough, said Robert Steuteville, with the Congress for the

New Urbanism, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that promotes sustainable communities.

“That’s why other cities are saying, ‘Aha. We have this thing. What can we do with it?’

Very often you can do something with it that actually generates value,” he said.

In Houston, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership saw the preservation of the Cistern, first built in 1926 and decommissioned in 2007, as a way to save a piece of history and educate visitors about Houston’s relationship with its bayous, which have provided both drinking water and drainage. The group also saw the Cistern as a good fit for its plans to display art throughout the renovated Buffalo Bayou Park, 160 acres that the reservoir sits next to.

The first exhibition is an abstract-video installation called “Rain” by Venezuelan artist Magdalena Fernández. The nearly two-minute video, accompanied by a soundtrack of snapping fingers and stomping heels that mimics falling rain, projects a series of white geometric shapes onto the darkened concrete columns and the shallow pool of water on the Cistern floor to evoke the atmosphere of a stormy night. It can be seen until June through scheduled tours.

In San Francisco, officials and community leaders are working to turn a reservoir shuttered in 1940 into a park. In October, officials in Philadelphia broke ground on a project to transform an abandoned rail line into a public park similar to the High Line. In Buffalo, a collection of concrete grain elevators that are remnants of the city’s heyday as a shipping hub are being reused as locations for restaurants, outdoor concerts and as the projection screen for a nightly light show.

Goodfellows provides for 250 more children than last year

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Donations of more than $47,000 toward Goodfellows charity efforts in Sycamore and Genoa-Kingston allowed about 250 more area children than last year to have a merrier Christmas.

Goodfellows has been providing gifts for children in need in Sycamore and DeKalb for more than 80 years.

In Sycamore, more than $37,000 was collected, which was enough to provide gifts for 992 children in need, and donations still are coming in, Goodfellows committee member Sandy Lancaster said.

“We know there’s a need, and because we had the funds available, we wanted to serve as many kids as we could,” Lancaster said.

Last year, Goodfellows only was able to fund gifts for fewer than 800 children. Lancaster attributes the increase this year to extended outreach from DeKalb-area social workers.

Kate Appleby of the Genoa organization, which is now in its third year of volunteering after being mentored by the Sycamore group, raised close to $10,000 to support 220 kids, or about 60 more than last year.

According to the organization’s website, 98 percent of monetary donations go toward buying gifts. Tom Doty, committee president for Sycamore Goodfellows, said $40 gets spent per child on clothing and toys.

“We have no assets,” Doty said. “Everything comes from community contributions, and organizers do a great job spending the money wisely.”

Nearly 200 volunteers were on hand Christmas Eve at Blumen Gardens in Sycamore to participate in the annual delivery of the gifts, which were bought at Target.

“The people at Target are great community partners,” Lancaster said.

She added that since Christmas Eve fell on Saturday and people didn’t have to work, there was a much greater turnout of delivery drivers.

“The community participation is awesome, and it’s a great feeling to see people out with their sons and daughters wrapping and helping,” Doty said.

One such volunteer for gift delivery was 13-year-old Megan McConnaughay of Sycamore, who raised $1,500 from her “Pumpkins for Punkins” project toward Goodfellows. The money was enough to

Megan’s family grows and sells pumpkins on a small farm to collect money for charitable causes. Last year, the proceeds went to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, but Megan said she wanted to find a local cause this year.

“I know where the money is going toward with Goodfellows, and we do it for no other cause than helping children,” Megan said.

Gifts come with contact information to the house it goes toward, so volunteers can make arrangements with family members to drop off presents in case no one is home.

While hundreds came to deliver gifts to the more than 400 families involved, hundreds more had come to wrap gifts throughout December, and all wrapping paper and tape was donated.

Former 3M buildings remain on the market

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – It has been nearly two months since a pair of properties on Barber Greene Road and Wirsing Parkway, formerly operated by 3M, were vacated.

The facilities were emptied in early November after the completion of the new 987,500-square-foot 3M distribution center in Park 88 in DeKalb, said Paul Borek, executive director of the DeKalb County Economic Development Corp.

Both buildings are on the market: The property at 12101 Barber Greene Road is available for lease, and the property at 2600 Wirsing Parkway is available for lease or sale.

After announcements of the construction of the new 3M building in Park 88 in 2015, Borek predicted that the vacated buildings would not be on the market for long.

NAI Hiffman Industrial Real Estate in Oakbrook Terrace is leasing the Barber Greene facility. Broker David Haigh, who is one of three real estate agents overseeing the building’s leasing, said it is available to be occupied immediately.

“It has some high bay areas that it had housed and the building provides uses for manufacturing or distribution,” Borek said. “It has heavy floors and heavy power, which is often needed for manufacturing purposes.”

The building was used for manufacturing by Caterpillar before being acquired and converted for distribution purposes by 3M in 2006.

The Wirsing Property, which is represented by Colliers Bennett & Kahnweiler Inc. of Deerfield, was built for 3M in 2006.

Borek added that the economic development agency works with brokers to ensure DeKalb-area properties are bought or leased as quickly as possible.

County unemployment rate drops to 4.6 percent DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – DeKalb County’s unemployment rate stood at 4.6 percent last month, down from 5.9 percent in November 2015, according to preliminary figures released Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The jobless rate in the city of DeKalb was 4.9 percent in November, down from 6.3 percent in November 2015. The unemployment rate identifies those who are out of work and looking for work.

It isn’t tied to collecting unemployment insurance benefits.

Statewide, 13 metro areas saw declines in over-the-year unemployment rates and one was unchanged, according to a news release from IDES. “Job growth in Illinois’ metro areas still lag the rest of the nation,” IDES Director Jeff Mays said. “The metro areas outside of Chicago have experienced more job growth recently than the Chicago metro area, which is a bit of a change from earlier in the year.”

Illinois businesses added jobs in eight metro areas, in which the largest increases were seen in Champaign-Urbana (+1.9 percent, +2,100), Elgin (+1.4 percent, +3,600) and Kankakee (+1.1 percent, +500). Total nonfarm jobs in the Chicago-Naperville-Arlington Heights Metro Division increased (+0.7 percent or +26,400). Businesses lost jobs in six metro areas, including Carbondale-Marion (-4.0 percent, -2,400), Decatur (-1.9

LONDON – George Michael, who rocketed to stardom with WHAM! and went on to enjoy a long and celebrated solo career lined with controversies, has died, his publicist said Sunday.

He was 53.

Michael died at his home in Goring, England. His publicist, Cindi Berger, said he had not been ill. No other details were released.

DeKALB – Residents who need to get rid of live Christmas trees have the option of bringing them to the DeKalb County landfill or putting them out for collection by Waste Management.

Trees taken to the landfill will be chipped into mulch, which is sold by the yard, according to the DeKalb County Health Department website.

DeKalb County accepts Christmas trees from Dec. 26 to Jan. 31 each year.

The landfill is at 18370 Somonauk Road in Cortland. For information, call the landfill at 815-758-6906.

Waste Management also offers a service picking up Christmas trees with regular garbage collection on select dates, but the trees must be stripped of lights, decorations and stands in order to be recycled. The trees cannot be in plastic bags.

In DeKalb, trees can be set out on regular collection days for the first two weeks of January, according to city code.

In Sycamore, Christmas trees will be collected from Christmas through the end of January, according to the city website.

Blagojevich awaits decision on commutation

CHICAGO – One of the last chances for former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to win early release from federal prison rests on a pending decision by the man whose Senate seat Blagojevich was convicted of trying to sell – President Barack Obama.

Blagojevich, 60, is in the fourth year of a 14-year prison term. He recently submitted a request to have his sentence on wide-ranging corruption convictions commuted, the U.S. Department of Justice has confirmed.

Obama has rarely mentioned his fellow Chicago Democrat since Blagojevich’s December 2008 arrest, a month after Obama won the presidency, so it’s hard to gauge whether he’d give Blagojevich’s request for a reduced sentence serious thought.

A look at the commutation process and factors that could influence a decision:

A commutation is a reduction of a sentence, while pardons amount to forgiveness of a crime that also removes restrictions on rights to run for office and vote. In federal cases, only presidents have the power to reduce a sentence.

Illinois high court clears doubt over snow-shoveling law

CHICAGO – Property owners can take comfort, but shouldn’t lapse into negligence, now that the Illinois Supreme Court has clarified a 1979 state law protecting them from some slip-and-fall lawsuits.

The high court reaffirmed earlier this month that the Snow and Ice Removal Act shields property owners from liability if someone gets hurt because they didn’t do a good enough job of shoveling, but only when the snow or ice was the result of natural conditions.

Blagojevich was on Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” TV show in 2010. While Trump eventually “fired” Blagojevich as a contestant, he praised Blagojevich for how he fought his criminal case, telling him, “You have a [heck] of a lot of guts.”

Among the factors Obama can consider is whether Blagojevich’s punishment was disproportionate to the crime.

His 14-year prison term was the longest for an Illinois politician for corruption

CHICAGO – Chicago’s Cardinal Blase Cupich delivered a Christmas message of unity with a focus on the plight of immigrants.

While Obama and Blagojevich were never considered close, their rise in politics occurred around the same time and in the same place – Chicago. When Blagojevich first become governor in 2003, Obama still was a relative unknown state legislator, and it was Blagojevich who was considered the bigger star of the Democratic Party.

Wiretap recordings played at his trials reveal Blagojevich’s deepening jealousy of Obama after he won the

Report: Arrests by Chicago police drop 28 percent

CHICAGO – The number of arrests in Chicago fell about 28 percent this year.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the number is on target to be the lowest since at least 2001. Through mid-December, police made about 50,000 arrests citywide in 2016, down from about 69,000 a year ago.

Arrests have dropped in every major crime area, from theft to aggravated battery with a handgun. Narcotics arrests

Obama has been granting commutations at a rapid pace in his final months.

On Dec. 19, he pardoned 78 people and shortened the sentence of 153 others, the greatest number of individual clemencies in a single day by any president. But the focus has largely been on drug cases.

Compared with the total number of requests made, Obama, like other presidents, has granted only a small percentage. Nearly 32,000 commutation petitions have been submitted to Obama since 2009, with just more than 1,000 granted, Justice Department data indicate. That’s a 3 percent success rate for applicants.

BELLEVILLE – A 70-year-old shop featuring model railroads and trains in Belleville is set to close by the end of the year.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that Harter’s Hobby Shop will close its doors because the owner is retiring.

The shop has operated in Belleville since 1946. Ron Bayer of Swansea has worked there since 1950 and owned the shop since 1959.

He told the newspaper that he’ll take any items left over in the store to a model railroad show in St. Charles. If there’s anything left after that, he’ll donate it to charity.

SOCHI, Russia – Backed by ships, helicopters and drones, Russian rescue teams searched Sunday for victims after a Russian plane carrying 92 people to Syria crashed into the Black Sea shortly after takeoff. Investigators said they were looking into every possible cause for the crash, including a terror attack.

All 84 passengers and eight crew members on the Russian military's Tu-154 plane are believed to have died when it crashed two minutes after taking off at 5:25 a.m. in good weather from the southern Russian city of Sochi. The passengers included dozens of singers in Russia’s world-famous military choir.

More than 3,000 rescue workers on 32 ships – including more than 100 divers flown in from across Russia – were searching the crash site at sea and along the shore, the Defense Ministry said. Helicopters, drones and submersibles were being used to help spot bodies and debris.

Powerful spotlights were brought in so the operation could continue all night.

Emergency crews found fragments of the plane about 1 mile from shore. By Sunday evening, rescue teams had recovered 11 bodies and Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov said fragments of other bodies were also found.

Magomed Tolboyev, a decorated Russian test pilot, said it was clear that all on board had died in the crash.

“There is no chance to survive in such situation,” he said, according to the Interfax news agency.

Parton still stands by her people Dolly Parton demonstrated once again this month how much she loves the people of Sevier County, the rugged mountain community where she grew up. Her telethon, “Smoky Mountains Rise: A Benefit for the My People Fund,” has raised $9 million and counting for those who lost their homes in last month’s wildfires.

The My People Fund, started by Parton, The Dollywood Foundation and Sevier County businesses, has pledged to give $1,000 a month for six months to each family who lost their primary residence in the blaze, which killed 14 people and scorched 17,000 acres in the tourist community.

More than 1,300 families are known to have lost their homes.

Sevier County’s most famous native swiftly went into action, putting the show together in a matter of days. The telethon aired Tuesday on a host of networks, including GAC, AXS-TV and RFD-TV, and featured more than 20 live and pre-taped performances from stars ranging from Cyndi Lauper and Don McLean to Parton, Kenny Rogers, Chris Young, Chris Stapleton and Reba McEntire.

Celebrities opened their wallets, too. Dierks Bentley and Paul Simon each called in and pledged $100,000, and Young was on hand with members of the Country Music Association to present a $250,000 joint check from Kenny Chesney and the trade organization.

“I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the people who have donated from all over the country and to my friends who donated their time, their talent, and money for My People,” Parton said in a statement. “The response has been so overwhelming that we haven’t been able to count all of the donations yet; right now, in total, we have raised about $9 million for the folks who lost everything in Sevier County.”

The telethon has been broadcast multiple times, so the final tally will be higher.

The proceeds will help families whose lives have been devastated by the wildfires. Donations of clothing, food and other items can only go so far, and it will take months for the displaced to return to some semblance of normalcy.

Many of those who lost their homes work or own businesses in Gatlinburg. The town lost many businesses, but the core of the commercial district escaped destruction.

While the tourism mecca has reopened to the public, it has not drawn the crowds that typically come for the Christmas season. The city had to cancel its popular Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade, and merchants and visitors alike have noted the falloff in business.

Dolly’s voice is incomparable, and few can sing like Reba or Kenny.

Dolly is singing the lead, but the rest of us can sing backup. The resulting harmony can help the recovery of a community that has lost so much.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR On the one-room schoolhouses of yesteryear To the Editor: While recuperating from a health issue, I discovered reruns of the TV series “Little House on the Prairie,” stirring memories for me and some of my peers.

Most of us received our early education in a one-room schoolhouse, where one teacher presided over our first eight years of formal education.

Located on the outskirts of the small town in Minnesota where I grew up, there were about 30 students in my Lutheran parochial school, including some from surrounding farms.

After Thanksgiving we began practicing for our Christmas Eve program in church. It was always such a relief for an unprepared student when the teacher announced we would begin practicing and to put away our books, pencils and writing tablets.

We were given a small scrap of paper on which he had written a Bible verse for each of us to memorize and recite at the program.

into the church singing “Oh Come all ye Faithful,” on the way to our assigned seats.

The first Bible passage began, “And it came to pass ...”

We stood up from our front pews and turned to face the congregation as we recited the story of Christ’s birth. I remember fidgeting in my seat as I awaited my turn, so I could locate my parents in the back pews.

We were told not to turn around while seated, and most of us adhered to that command because we did not want to risk the wrath of our teacher. I had a deathly fear of him, as he was a very stern taskmaster.

These recitations were interspersed with singing various Christmas hymns, accompanied by our teacher on the organ. At program’s

end, breathing a sigh of relief, we awaited the distribution of a paper bag filled with goodies from the local merchants for each of us.

An orange or an apple, some hard Christmas candy, peanuts in a shell and a few assorted nuts, and my favorite of all a – writing tablet (remember those blue-lined tablets?) and a new No. 2 lead pencil.

Oh, the stories I planned to write! Letters to my cousin residing in a neighboring state.

Probably not good enough for a TV series such as “Little House on the Prairie,” but how I wish I could resurrect one of them.

What was on my young mind? I’ll never know.

Leman entered the season as the reigning champ in the vault. While she slipped to third, she picked up a gold on the floor and was third in the allaround.

Savannah Long looked as if she was going to finish third.

Instead, she had a late charge in the final stretch to capture the state title in the 300-meter hurdles at the Class 3A Girls Track and Field State Championship.

A year after finishing in sixth place in the event, she became the third DeKalb girls track and field athlete to win a state championship. Before 2016, no DeKalb-Sycamore boys swimmer could call himself a state champion.

Daniel Hein became the first.

Hein won the 100-yard backstroke at the state championship, finishing in 48.37 seconds to win the first gold medal in the co-op’s history and broke the state record for the event during the preliminaries.

“That’s one thing that I’ve strived for in my four years of high school swimming and to finally get it, it’s awesome,” he said.

State champion might just be the start for Hein.

He finished in the top 100 at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June, and has the top time in the backstroke for his University of Missouri swim team at 47.16.

Barbs look to repeat in Dayton Classic

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb boys basketball team will face an uphill battle if it wants to repeat as champions of its own tournament.

Riding a four-game winning streak into the 89th annual Chuck Dayton Classic, the Barbs will be the No. 5 seed as they set to open the tournament against Hampshire at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in DeKalb.

“We have a very solid field,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said. “You try to get the best competition you can because this is the last nonconference type of format you’ll play in before you get into your conference. ... It’s important for us to give all the teams a great experience by challenging their teams and giving them a chance to get their teams better by playing good competition.”

The Barbs (6-2) edged Geneva, 4139, in the tournament’s championship game last year but bring a less experienced group into the 2016 field. Geneva, undefeated this season, is the No. 1 team in the field, followed by Ridgewood (No. 2), Chicago Schurz (No. 3) and West Chicago (No. 4).

The winner between the Barbs and Hampshire (2-6) will face either West Chicago (8-2) or Marmion Academy (09) on Wednesday.

With a conference game at Sterling (4-3) waiting for the Barbs on the other side of the tournament on Jan. 6, Biancalana said the mindset going into the Chuck Dayton Classic is both to win and to get prepared for a chance to take their third consecutive Northern Illinois Big 12 crown.

“Obviously, our No. 1 goal is to compete to win every game you play in,” he said. “Every game you play is going to give you a different type of challenge, whether it’s guarding against a great guard or a quality big man, playing against a zone or full-court pressure – you try to get those different experiences and they should help you in conference. What you find out when you play four games in four days is that you really have to rely on your bench, so we’re going to be able to develop some more roles off the bench and get kids more experience.”

Everybody in the 16-team field is guaranteed four games through the weekend. The Barbs have won the title in their own tournament six times – in 2015, 2009, 2000, 1983, 1967 and 1948.

After starting the season 2-2, the Barbs have rattled off four consecutive wins – all at home – and are coming off a 69-57 win over Chicago Perspectives on Dec. 17.

DeKalb is averaging 53 points per game, with four players in double figures – Michael Mitchell (12.5), Cole Tucker (11.6) Michael Vilet (10.5) and Darvon Sisson (10.0). Biancalana said he’s been impressed with the play of backup point guard Michael Albert, guard Derek Kyler, who was the star quarterback for DeKalb and didn’t play basketball the past two seasons, and forward DeMonte Blalock.

Blalock came off the bench to record three critical steals in the Barbs’ 56-50 victory over rival Sycamore on Dec. 2.

Plentiful injuries have hindered progress over course of season

mpotash@suntimes.com It’s only fitting that the one player on injured reserve that the Bears designated for return, did not. With the Bears’ luck with injuries, it’s almost an upset that cornerback Kyle Fuller isn’t worse.

The Bears thought Fuller could return this season, but he will not after the Bears decided last week against putting him on the active roster. With Fuller and nose tackle Eddie Goldman – a late, but not unexpected addition to injured reserve on Friday – the Bears have 19 players on IR this season and

33 in two seasons under coach John Fox and general manager Ryan Pace.

(That’s more than double the number of players on IR in two years under Marc Trestman – 15 (five in 2013 and 10 in 2014).

Those numbers underscore arguably the biggest offseason X-factor for the Bears as they get closer to what figures to be a critical season for both Fox and Pace in 2017. Almost regardless of who plays quarterback or how much better Leonard Floyd, Jordan Howard, Cody Whitehair, Nick Kwiatkoski and Bryce Callahan are next season, if the Bears can’t avoid the glut of injuries and re-injuries that gutted them this

season, they have almost no chance to taking the huge step they need to take to become a playoff contender.

Injuries are mostly considered a factor of luck in the NFL, but the Bears’ spate of injuries this season almost defies that explanation. They have an NFL-high $32.7 million in salary cap space on injured reserve, according to spotrac.com (the Vikings are next at $27.7 million). The Bears have 16 players who have played in all 15 games – the league average is 22.2 (only the woebegone Jets have fewer, with 14). They have just two players who have played in 90 percent of the offensive/defensive snaps this season. The league average

is more than triple that – 6.3. The playoff-bound Cowboys, Giants, Falcons and Raiders have eight or more.

“Some teams have stayed healthy and some not as much,” Fox said.

“There are actually teams that have more missed to injury than we have and I think the records are similar.”

The challenge for the Bears is to not only get players healthy, but keep them healthy. Goldman has missed games with the same ankle injury three times this season. Eddie Royal missed two games with a toe injury, returned for three games but aggravated or re-injured the toe and is on IR.

Bulls rally, but Spurs earn Christmas cheer

mpotash@suntimes.com SAN ANTONIO – The Bulls lost for the sixth time in seven games, but didn’t quit – rallying to take the lead in the second half after falling behind by 20 points in the first quarter against the San Antonio Spurs – before falling 119-100 on Christmas Day at AT&T Center.

For a team trending toward shaky territory, that’s – as coach Fred Hoiberg called it – a positive sign.

“I want to win as everybody does in here,” said guard Jimmy Butler, who blue-collared his way to 19 points on 8-of-19 shooting in a tough matchup against the Spurs’ Kawhi Leonard. “But we’ve got to stay high-spirited, man. If it gets gloomy in here, everything’s going to go downhill very quickly. We’ve got to keep our head up and those brighter days are ahead.”

Just how close to the edge are the Bulls (14-16) after falling to 4-10 since a successful circus road trip – with losses to the Hornets by 12, the Wizards by 10 and the Bucks by 26 and 11 in the previous 10 days?

“We’re fine,” Butler said. “We’re in this together. We preach that to one another every single day. We’re all we have. These coaches. These players. We know what we’re capable of. We’ve just got to get in the rhythm and get everything back on track.”

In the context of the season, the loss

to the Spurs was a step in the right direction for a team headed off the tracks.

The Spurs hit 12 of their first 13 shots and took leads of 17-2 and 30-10 in the first eight minutes. LaMarcus Aldridge (33 points on 15-of-20 shooting) hit four long jumpers and Leonard scored nine consecutive points to get it started.

With a strong effort off the bench from Nikola Mirotic (11 points), Jerian Grant and Doug McDermott, the Bulls avoided the blowout, trailing 5550 at halftime. Taj Gibson sparked a third-quarter rally as the Bulls took a 70-67 lead on Butler’s 3-pointer with 4:55 to left in the quarter.

But back-up center Dewayne Dedmon scored all nine of his points and Manu Ginobili hit a big three-pointer as the Spurs outscored the Bulls 17-4 to take an 87-74 lead after three.

“They came out on fire and built that big lead,” Hoiberg said. “I was really proud of how we fought back. I don’t think we ever hung our heads. We kept fighting through the adversity, which is what this team has to do the remainder of the season when things aren’t going our way.

“We battled back in this building against a team of that caliber and take the lead in the second half … is a positive sign. It’s a step in the right direction for our group to be able to do that.”

Dwyane Wade scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half to lead the Bulls.

Your current health affects immune response to flu shot Dear Doctor: If I received the flu shot in September, will I still be protected from the flu in March?

Dear Reader: That’s a very good question – and the answer depends, in part, on your current health.

The flu season normally lasts from November to March, but it can begin in October and even end in May. The injected influenza vaccine, which contains three to four inactivated viruses from the prior flu season, spurs the formation of antibodies to help your body fight off influenza if you’re exposed. It takes about two weeks after the vaccine for your body to produce sufficient protective antibodies.

If you are a healthy person younger than 50, you’re more likely to get a good immune response from the vaccine – and also more likely to have an immune response that lasts six to 12 months. You’ll also have a greater and longer-lasting immune response if you get the flu vaccine every year.

So if you got your shot in September, you should have immunity that lasts throughout the flu season.

If you’re older than 50 and have diabetes, cancer, or kidney or liver failure, your ability to mount a good response from the vaccine decreases. So six months after your vaccination, you may not have sufficient antibodies to ward off the flu. This has been shown specifically for the H1N1 influenza virus. If you received the vaccine on Sept.

1, you may be less protected by April of the following year against H1N1.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley This decreased immunity is especially pronounced in people older than 65. It decreases even further among those older than 65 who have chronic illnesses.

Some pharmacies have been administering the flu vaccine as early as the middle of August. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing for someone older than 65 or someone with chronic illnesses, because you still get immunity from the vaccine that should last through much of the flu season. Still, it’s probably better to wait until at least the middle of September to get the flu vaccine just to ensure you’re protected for as much of the flu season as possible.

Finally, it’s especially important to get yearly flu vaccines if you are: older than 60; between the ages of 6 months and 4 years; have chronic illnesses; or are pregnant.

The flu is especially risky for these groups.

While imperfect, the flu vaccine is the best way our society has found to decrease the death rates and the long-term complications from a potentially fatal disease that causes anywhere from 3,300 to 49,000 deaths per year in the United States.

DEAR ABBY has happened again, another Jeanne stressful, unPhillips pleasant Thanksgiving for me.

My husband has out-of-town relatives who fly in using frequent flier miles. They get picked up from the airport on arrival and returned to the airport for departure. They spend a week here eating, drinking and being entertained. Never once have they offered to buy any food, help with meals or take us out for dinner. If we go out for a meal, it is always our treat.

They brag nonstop about how much money they are saving, and they could well afford to be gracious. This has been happening for 15 years.

They invite themselves. I do not enjoy their company. My husband is aware of how I feel, but has asked me to tolerate them because they are the only blood relatives he’s in contact with outside of our family. I am left to do the laundry and cleaning after they leave. They have a nice vacation, and I feel used and abused. How can I get rid of them and still keep peace in the family? – Fed Up With Freeloaders Dear Fed Up: If your husband insists on entertaining these users because of his blood relationship, you should allow him to do it. If you’re feeling magnanimous, welcome them warmly and tell them you’re sorry you can’t spend more time with them, but you are leaving to visit: your grown children, your parents, your dear old school chum(s).
