By CHRISTOPHER JENSEN BETHLEHEM, N.H. – Instead of mailing her Christmas cards from her local post office, Sherry Wareing drove 20 miles roundtrip to a small post office in a White Mountains town of about 2,500.

Convenience didn’t matter to Wareing, of Twin Mountain. She wanted the “Bethlehem” stamp on her envelopes.

“We feel the connection here with Jesus Christ, Bethlehem, the birth of Christ and everything. This kind of represents it for us,” she said.

According to the Bible, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in what is now the West Bank.

Most of the year, letters and other mail dropped off at the tiny post office are sent to a regional facility in White River Junction, Vermont. There, they stream through an efficient automated machine that cancels stamps with postal markings.

But each December, Bethlehem postmaster Brian Thompson dusts off a machine that has been there for at least six decades. Stacks of cards must be fed into it by hand and it cancels each stamp with the word “Bethlehem.”

“It has a pinch wheel and it just starts drawing letters through,” Thompson said. “The machine works great. But you’ll stand there for several hours a day canceling letters.”

With two days before Christmas, Thompson said about 58,000 letters had gone through the machine.

There are about 90 post offices in the United States with holiday- or winter-themed names and the U.S. Postal Service offers a “Christmas Re-mailing” service to them. Letters may be sent to the postmaster in the town marked “Christmas Re-mailing” and they will be stamped and sent out.

The list includes six other Bethlehems along with Garland, Maine; Holly, Michigan; Rudolph, Ohio; Santa Claus, Indiana; Antlers, Oklahoma; Nazareth, Texas; and Snowflake, Arizona.

New apartments, relocated brew pub, furniture store coming to Sycamore

SYCAMORE – Changes are coming to downtown Sycamore – the area is set to gain several new residents and a relocated brew pub, but one restaurant that had been slated to open this year never made it to its grand opening, and a longtime shoe store is set to close.

The development of a high-end apartment complex at the former Jane Fargo Hotel is expected to be finished next month.

The historic hotel building at 355 W. State St. will include a furniture store on the first floor and 16 apartments – 12 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom – on the second and third floors.

Developer John Pappas said the lobby and commercial space on the lower level are finished, and the apartments should be complete by the end of January.

The city issued Pappas a one-time grant of $100,000 to help offset more than $400,000 of planned exterior work and demolition. Pappas bought the property in March, and the city approved his plans in May. Mayor Ken Mundy said the apartments will be positive for the city because people will have the opportunity to live close to Sycamore businesses and other downtown amenities.

“We think folks who end up living there will be very happy,” he said.

Rose Treml, executive director of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, said members of the chamber are excited for the new apartments and having a home furnishing store in the retail space.

“I take inquiries all the time from young professionals or recently retired professionals who want to live near the downtown area,” she said.

Pappas said all the apartments have been rented out. About 50 people applied to live in the 16 apartments, which are being created from space that used to be 39 hotel rooms.

“It was a quality downtown building, and I thought [the apartments] would bring long-term good for myself and the city,” Pappas said.

He said the building’s hotel-like amenities will provide tenants with a “lifestyle not offered anywhere else in DeKalb County.” No one with a credit score lower than 680 will be approved as a tenant.

Another development in downtown Sycamore will be the Forge Brewhouse, which is moving locations from 1330 E. State St. to 327 W. State St. The owners of the Super One Dollar Store have agreed to sell their property to Forge owners James and Lisa Heinrich, who have operated the only brew pub in Sycamore since March 2015.

The City Council approved the Heinrichs’ request Monday for a special-use permit to operate a restaurant with an on-site brew pub at the new location.

Developers Andrea and Stewart Hepker discontinued their plans to open a restaurant called Monocot at 366 W. State St., and the vacant space could be used for a new retailer.

Monocot was set to open in September and would have been the couple’s first restaurant. The council voted earlier this month to refund $2,795 of

the Hepkers’ liquor licensing fee.

“It’s unfortunate, because it was going to be a nice spot, but they just didn’t make it,” Mundy said.

First Ward Alderman Curt Lang, owner of the 366 W. State St. building, said he is hoping to re-lease the space for retail use, and a potential retailer already has shown interest.

Meanwhile, the Stomp shoe store at 307 W. State St. has announced it is closing.

Treml said owners Kathy and Dean Jones have been great business partners for the city and put a lot of work into the building.

“It’s a beautiful building,” she said.

“We’ll do everything we can to help fill it.”

Mundy said the building has housed a shoe store since the late 1960s.

“There are both challenges and opportunities [for business owners], so this is really sad for them,” he said.

“They’re good people.”

Treml said city officials have to do a lot of work behind the scenes to make way for successful developments.

“We don’t really have problem filling vacancies in Sycamore; it happens pretty fast,” she said. “I’m seeing things start to move.”

Mundy said there has been increased interest in the city’s facade grants for renovating or developing businesses.

“Most of the shops and stores downtown are very well done,” he said. “I’m happy the city is even in a position to offer some assistance.”

Mundy said the retention of businesses also is important, as the city tries to make itself attractive for potential developers. In turn, these developments mean more jobs are available for Sycamore residents, he said.

“I look forward to having more interest in commercial and retail,” he said. “We’ll see what the new year brings.”

Woman saved after Hy-Vee employee calls for help

SYCAMORE – Christiene Drake knew something was wrong when her regular customer hadn’t called in her grocery order two days after she said she would, so she took matters into her own hands. She called 911.

Susan Dailey, 63, had been lying on the couch for four days without her medication or water when police broke through the door of her Sycamore apartment the day before Thanksgiving.

After being taken to the hospital for emergency treatment, Susan Dailey recovered at Pine Acres Rehabilitation Center in DeKalb and returned home Wednesday, just in time for Christmas.

“I am thankful to the person who helped me,” Susan Dailey said.

Patricia Dailey of DeKalb, Susan’s sister-in-law, said Susan had passed out in her bathroom and made her way to the couch where she attempted to wait until she was strong enough to get up and call for help.

Hy-Vee employee who saved customer’s life “She’s a very private and reclusive individual, never calls anyone, but she always makes her grocery call,” Patricia Dailey said. She said Susan suffers from lung and heart problems and might have died without help arriving when it did.

“It was a chain reaction, and it all started with Christiene,” Patricia said.

Susan’s oxygen levels had dropped when paramedics arrived, and her heart stopped several times during her first night of treatment, Patricia said.

“She’s like the Energizer Bunny,” Patricia said. “She keeps coming back.”

Drake is the manager of Aisles Online at Hy-Vee in Sycamore. She

said people can order their groceries online through the service, but some customers who don’t have computers call to place orders.

Drake said she made sure to tell Susan ahead of time about the early cutoff for orders leading up to Thanksgiving, and Susan agreed she would call Monday.

“I have Susan’s number memorized,” Drake said. “Monday came and I didn’t hear from her, so I gave her a call at 9:30 a.m. She likes to sleep in, so I made sure I didn’t call too early.”

Drake said she attempted to call Susan again before leaving work Tuesday, and by Wednesday morning she still hadn’t heard anything.

“Wednesday, I left work at 8 a.m. I went home and took a nap, but when I got up I was thinking about it,” Drake said.

Drake said she went to the police station to ask if they could do a wellness check, but the station was closed when she arrived. She then went to visit Susan at her apartment and called 911 when there was no answer

at the door.

“I just knew something wasn’t right,” Drake said. “I’m thankful everything turned out OK.” She said the officer broke through the door when he was unable to see into the apartment or verify Susan’s whereabouts.

“The neighbors had seen her a couple days before; her car was there,” Drake said. “I said maybe she’s in the hospital, but the police already checked.”

Drake said the main lesson people should take away from the situation is to think about their neighbors, especially those who are homebound or disabled.

Patricia added she is thankful for people such as Drake who take time to think of others.

“It was the night before Thanksgiving, and so many people don’t have time to care for anyone else,” Patricia said. “She only met [Susan] once, but they talked on the phone a number of times. Most people just punch the clock, collect their check and that’s it.”

Police plan safe driving enforcement for holidays “We are helping Illinois drive zero fatalities to reality, so we will have zero tolerance for drunk and drug-impaired driving this holiday season.”

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Police will be cracking down on impaired driving over the holiday season by stepping up enforcement until the end of the year.

“We are helping Illinois drive zero fatalities to reality, so we will have zero tolerance for drunk and drug-impaired driving this holiday season,” DeKalb Police Cmdr. Steve Lekkas said in a news release.

There were 32,166 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the U.S. in 2015, resulting in 35,092 deaths. An estimated 150 drivers in Illinois were killed in crashes with a blood alcohol content above or at the legal limit of 0.08, making up about 31 percent of total drivers killed, according to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

There I was, living in my own home in Creston, IL and managing just fine. I had my good friends, my loving family and a home I enjoyed. Then it happened. Illinois nearly 6 months behind in education funding

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois is almost six months behind in its obligation to give millions of dollars to school districts statewide for transportation, special education and other expenses.

The stopgap spending deal Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democratic-controlled Legislature struck over the summer authorized a full year’s funding for elementary and secondary education, intending to spare public schools from the uncertainty plaguing other state operations, which were only funded for six

months, the Herald & Review reported.

As Illinois keeps up with distributing general state aid, which covers day-today school operations, districts wait for two payments of separate funds.

Abdon Pallasch, a spokesman for state Comptroller Susana Mendoza said the office hopes to send last year’s final payment next week.

With lack of funding, school officials have to dip into cash reserves or borrow money until state funds come through.

John Deere to pay $275K in whistleblower settlement

MOLINE – Officials at the U.S. Department of Labor said agricultural manufacturer John Deere has agreed to pay a former employee $275,000 to settle allegations in a whistleblower lawsuit.

The agreement resolves a lawsuit filed last year in federal court in central Illi-

nois under the anti-retaliation provision of the Occupational Safety and Health Act. The lawsuit claimed a pipefitter was fired from Deere’s Moline facility in 2012 after reporting unsafe working conditions and the company’s failure to correct one of safety problems.

Deere did not admit liability in the case, but the company has agreed to pay the former employee back wages and damages.

CHICAGO – Charges have been filed against a 32-year-old man accused in the 2015 shooting that left a young Chicago girl with a traumatic brain injury.

Cochran’s 20th Ward predecessor, Arenda Troutman, was sentenced in 2009 to four years in prison for accepting $10,000 in bribes to secure a developer alley access. Prosecutors said she even blocked a housing development for low-income families because a developer wouldn’t pay up.

PEORIA – Peoria’s fire chief said five arsons over about 24 hours have destroyed vacant buildings within a half-mile of one another on the city’s south side.

Chief Chuck Lauss said the only characteristic shared among the fires was that each was deliberately set. He told the Journal Star it’s not clear how many people are responsible.

Firefighters were called out to the fires from about noon Wednesday until just before 1 p.m. Thursday.

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida – After months of promising to engage more with Russia, President-elect Donald Trump vowed to enhance America’s nuclear capabilities, admonishing Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday that he hopes both global powers can restore collaboration so that “we do not have to travel an alternate path.”

Trump passed along a “very nice letter” that his transition team said was sent to him

The letter, dated Dec. 15, also notes that serious global and regional challenges “show that the relations between Russia and the U.S. remain an important factor in ensuring stability and security in the modern world.”

In response, Trump said that Putin’s “thoughts are so correct,” and that he hopes “both sides are able to live up to these thoughts, and we do not have to travel an alternate path.”

Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Putin sent the letter, “voicing hope for an improvement of bilateral ties,” according to the Interfax news agency. Trump’s transition team described the text as an unofficial translation.

The exchange comes on the heels of comments by Trump and Putin alike about the need to strengthen their countries’ nuclear arsenals. Trump reopened the debate over nuclear proliferation Thursday, declaring on Twitter that the U.S. should “greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability” until the rest of the world “comes to its senses” regard-

And while Putin had described Trump in favorable terms during the campaign, observers said Russia’s interest is centered around winning relief from crippling sanctions implemented under the Obama administration and bolstering Russia as the political and economic equivalent of the United States.

Tensions have been mounting between the U.S. and Russia in recent months over accusations by the Obama administration that the Russian government hacked the emails of U.S. citizens and institutions, including political organizations, and handed them over to DCLeaks.com and WikiLeaks for distribution.

The FBI said this month that it supports the CIA’s conclusion that Russia interfered in the presidential election with the goal of supporting Trump.

Top 5 teams of 2016

The following is the first of our three-part Best of 2016 series. Today, we look at the Top 5 teams of the year.

No. 5: Genoa-Kingston football

The season kept rolling along, and so did the wins for the Genoa-Kingston football team.

The Cogs (11-1) had their first undefeated season since winning a state title in 1977. This year’s club made it as far as the Class 4A quarterfinals before losing to eventual state runner up Johnsburg.

They managed to be strong on both sides of the ball – maybe because they used many two-way players. On offense, Zach Butler went through the regular season without throwing an interception, and the top two running backs in the area were on the Cogs – Aidan Simmons and Dan Guardi.

Of course, there also was all-state receiver Zach Miller, who was equally as explosive returning kicks and as a cornerback.

It was the second playoff trip in a row for G-K in coach Bill McCarty’s second year back with the Cogs – he led them to the playoffs three times in his first stint with the team from 2005-10.

The end result was a team that made it past the second round for the first time since that 1977 season.

No. 4: DeKalb softball

Players on the DeKalb softball team would say they knew they had a chance – a really good chance – to win whenever Morgan Newport was in the circle.

Newport was a dominant pitcher for the Barbs and helped lead DeKalb to its first appearance in the state tournament in school history, finishing fourth in the Class 4A Softball State Tournament.

The Barbs (26-8), who only lost two consecutive games once in the regular season, beat Zion-Benton, 6-0, in the supersectional to advance to the state tournament.

Newport, who is now at Northwestern, came into the state tournament with a record of 22-6 and an ERA of 0.90 and 237 strikeouts in 187 innings pitched. She also had a batting average of .482 and eight doubles, six triples, two home runs, 34 runs and 36 RBIs. The star left-handed pitcher had plenty of help with teammates Erin Karasewski (.309, 18 RBIs, 25 runs), Mallory Warner (.409, 25 RBIs), Skylar Haring (.278, 19 RBIs) and Jenna Levine (.326, 17 RBIs) all chipping in to give the Barbs their best season in school history.

Timberwolves reached the promised land.

Indian Creek made the state tournament for the first time, losing in the semifinal but topping Seton Academy, 56-50, in overtime to finish in third place. The Timberwolves trailed by two and Seton Academy had the ball, but Madison Russell came up with a steal that led to the bucket by MaKayli Vann that forced overtime.

“I started tearing up there at the end,” Muchmore said at the time.

“It’s been a long road for us, myself, Mr. (Chad) Crutcher. It’s been about 16 years together. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would finish up here.”

Vann had 23 points and 15 rebounds in that game, but it was Josie Diehl No. 3: Indian Creek girls basketball that powered the Indian Creek season.

been sacked only once in each of the past three games, the one from last week was glaring, when Julius Peppers beat Charles Leno off the edge for a stripsack. Overall, the Bears tackles have been solid, and Massie has improved since the first month of the season.

They have a tough challenge Saturday against Washington’s edge rushers. Kerrigan has 11 sacks and 19 QB hits, while Murphy has eight sacks and 23 QB hits. The also have combined for 24 tackles for loss.

“They do a really good job with their line twists, their pick stunts,” offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said this week. “[Kerrigan’s] a smart, instinctive player. He had a sack against us last year as well, maybe a couple.

We’re gonna be very aware of where he’s at in the game, and he’s playing at a high level.”

Keep Barkley clean and the Bears can attack a Washington secondary that is not that imposing aside from Josh Norman. Running the ball often also will keep Kerrigan and Murphy from pinning their ears back and simply rushing up field at the snap.

Freeman still is the Bears’ leading tackler by a wide margin, but he lacks a forced turnover this season.

Colorado scores OT goal to beat Hawks CHICAGO – Nathan MacKinnon scored 25 seconds into overtime to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 2-1 win over the Blackhawks on Friday night.

Cruising in with Tyson Barrie on a 2-on-1 break, MacKinnon beat Corey Crawford with a high shot that ticked off the post and ended the Avalanche’s five-game losing streak.

Mikko Rantanen scored on a deflection at 5:42 of the third period for the Avalanche’s first goal in 167 minutes and 43 seconds of play. Colorado was shut out in its previous two games, including a 6-0 loss to the Maple Leafs on Thursday.

Hawks captain Jonathan Toews stopped a 13-game drought with his fifth of the season. Toews’ power-play goal midway through the second was his first since Nov. 5, a span that includes missing nine games with a back injury.

Calvin Pickard made 38 saves while the Avalanche’s No. 1 goalie, Semyon Varlamov, remained in Denver to have his groin injury assessed.

Crawford had 32 stops in his return

from an appendectomy. He missed 10 games following surgery on Dec. 3.

Varlamov started Colorado’s loss to Toronto on Thursday, but left at 8:42 of the second after allowing five goals on 18 shots.

The Avalanche got off to a fast start after they were drubbed in Denver on Thursday night, running up an 8-1 shots advantage early in the scoreless first against the Hawks. Crawford made several alert saves, including a sprawling stop on MacKinnon’s backhander about six minutes in.

Frustrations simmer in loss

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Triple-doubles, flying elbows, two ejections and a revved-up crowd cheering until the end.

Even Michael Jordan was there sitting courtside.

It may only be December, but Friday night’s game between the Charlotte Hornets and the Bulls had all of the intensity of a postseason game.

Nic Batum had 20 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his first triple-double of the season, and the Hornets beat the Bulls, 103-91, for their third straight victory.

“That was like a playoff game tonight,” Batum said. “The crowd was into it and it was a good team in front of us. That’s a great game for us to get a win against.”

It didn’t come easily.

Charlotte had to hold off the Bulls in the fourth quarter in a game that ended with Robin Lopez and Taj Gibson getting ejected.

The normally mild-mannered Lopez could face a suspension from the league after he simultaneously elbowed Cody Zeller and Marvin Williams in the face – using both elbows – with 38 seconds left and the outcome already decided. Gibson, who had picked up a technical foul for arguing

“I thought we started the game with the right attitude, right approach, right physicality,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford said. “Our rebounding and our defense in the first half was really good. Second half, they hurt us some on the offensive glass, but our guys made a lot of good plays.”

Christmas has already been celebrated at Dwyane Wade’s house. His wife and kids unwrapped their presents Wednesday night, since waiting until Sunday morning wasn’t an option this year.

Wade will wake up on Christmas morning in San Antonio, instead of being with his family in Chicago. He’s part of the NBA’s lineup on Christmas for the 12th time in his 14 professional seasons – and even though it meant having a nontraditional holiday celebration, the Bulls guard still relishes being part of the league’s showcase day.

“I won’t lie to you and say it means as much as it did when I was young or when I got to be in my first Christmas game,” Wade said. “But it is still special. At the end of the day, no matter what’s happened in my career, the NBA has put me on Christmas, let me play on Christmas, let me be part of Christmas. One day, I won’t be playing.

But for now, it’s still so cool.”

The annual Christmas quintupleheader – highlighted by the NBA Finals rematch of Golden State visiting champion Cleveland – involves 10 teams, five arenas, hundreds of players and team employees, who-knows-howmany workers in those various buildings and will draw about 100,000 fans.

And no fewer than seven other teams will be traveling at some point on Christmas, because they play Dec. 26.

It’s a smorgasbord of basketball, starting with Boston visiting New York at noon and followed by Golden State at Cleveland, the Bulls at San Antonio, Minnesota at Oklahoma City and the Clippers visiting the Lakers in the building they share in Los Angeles.

The league’s schedule mandate is simple: There’s usually a Finals rematch, and the other four games are about finding matchups of high-profile teams or players and hoping fans at home watch.

SPORTS BRIEF Jets coach Bowles hospitalized, doesn’t travel with team

New York Jets coach Todd Bowles was hospitalized Friday with what the team called an “undisclosed illness,” and he did not travel for the game at New England on Saturday.

In a statement posted on the team’s

website, the Jets said Bowles was in stable condition, but it was uncertain if he would eventually join the team in time for the game. The 53-year-old Bowles fell ill early Friday afternoon and was taken to the hospital, where general manager Mike Maccagnan visited him.

Check lead paint in older homes Dear Doctor: We live in a charming older home, but some of the paint looks old. How worried should I be that it might contain lead?

Dear Reader: You’re right to be concerned about the possible presence of lead-based paint in your home. Even in small quantities, lead is toxic to humans and animals. Children younger than 6 and pregnant women particularly are susceptible to the ill effects of lead.

Children who have ingested lead may suffer from hyperactivity, lowered IQ, anemia, impaired growth and hearing problems. In pregnant women, the presence of lead can slow the growth of the fetus, cause nerve or brain damage to the unborn child and even lead to premature birth.

Long-term exposure to lead can cause serious physical and neurological problems in adults as well. High levels of the toxic metal are associated with damage to the kidneys, brain, bone marrow and blood, as well as fertility problems and nerve disorders.

If your home was built before 1978, the Environmental Protection Agency warns yes, there’s a strong chance it contains leadbased paint. Homes built after 1978, the year a federal ban on lead-based paints went into effect, are considered to be safe.

The probability of finding lead-based paint in your home increases along with its age. Homes built between 1960 and 1977 have a 24 percent chance of containing lead-based paint. That number spikes to 69 percent for homes built between 1940 and 1959. Homes that predate 1940 have a whopping 87 percent probability of containing lead-based paint.

So are you and your family at risk?

Fortunately, even if you’ve found lead-based paint in your home, there’s good news.

When it’s intact and in good condition, lead-based paint usually is not harmful,

You can go a step further and, by covering lead-based paint with new paint, drywall or wallpaper, you will stabilize it and protect it from damage.

Problems arise because as it ages, leadbased paint chips, cracks, peels and crumbles. The resulting particles mix easily with household dust and get distributed throughout the house.

Since kids tend to explore the world with their mouths, the chance they’ll ingest lead from older paint that is deteriorating is high.

Sweeping, vacuuming or even a breeze from an open window can make lead-filled dust go airborne where your family and pets can inhale and absorb it.

To know whether or not the paint you are worried about contains lead, you can buy a test kit at a hardware store or hire a certified inspector. If you plan to remove the paint or to do major renovations, it’s important to use a certified contractor who will know proper abatement procedures.

Federal guidelines recommend children who live in or regularly visit a home with lead-based paint be tested for lead levels in their blood. For children, this test is performed at 12 months of age. The health effects of lead are not reversible, so vigilance is your best protection.

DEAR ABBY My nephew, “Logan,” is a Jeanne sophomore in Phillips high school.

He is a bright, awesome kid who is on the autism spectrum.

He is very high-functioning, even on a higher level than Asperger’s. But the social struggles/issues still are there. To this day, my sister refuses to tell Logan about his autism.

She feels immense guilt and goes into panic mode every time I bring it up. She thinks he wouldn’t be able to handle it.

The poor kid knows something is wrong but doesn’t know what. Can I tell him? Or if it’s morally wrong to tell him, can I tell him when he is 18? I am a nurse, and I strongly believe everyone should know everything about their conditions, mental as well as physical.

But it’s tough with my nephew because he is still a minor. – Can I Tell Him? Dear Can I Tell: Your sister may mean well, but keeping her son in the dark about why he is the way he is, is cruel. I agree the boy should be told, but the person to persuade your sister to come clean would be your nephew’s pediatrician, because it appears she has tuned you out on that subject. He should have been getting counseling and/or therapy to help him deal with his social issues.

If the conversation still hasn’t happened by the time Logan turns 18, tell him then. He probably will be grateful to be able to put a label on what he’s experiencing.

Dear Abby: My taste in music has changed throughout my life. I liked pop when I was young because that’s what I heard played on the car radio. Then in eighth grade I started to like music from the ’60s to the ’90s. But now I’m a sophomore in high school, and I have become a fan of rap and electronic music.

A lot of adults think rap is trash. I understand it may cover some mature subjects like selling drugs, violence, sex and living in the hood. But I still find rap songs to be a pleasure to listen to.

Am I wrong to enjoy rap music? This may sound irrational, but I know employers search social media profiles. If I make the fact that I enjoy rap public, will they reject me?

These are just thoughts that have crossed my mind, so I’m asking for some advice. – Hip-
