Call, write – tell us how it is There are some people who regularly call or write me to tell me what they think.

With few exceptions, they are people I appreciate, and not because they agree with me (often, they don’t). It’s because they are real people with a point of view, and by God, they’re going to tell me how it is whether I care to hear it or not.

That kind of honesty, from people who in some cases have been reading this newspaper at least 10 times as long as I have been its editor, is worth a lot.

In the aftermath of Donald Trump’s upset victory in the presidential election, people talked a lot about the press being out of touch. The popular theory is that media elites living on our coasts didn’t see Trump’s victory coming because they have lost touch with real Americans.

Of course the elites have lost touch. A better question to ask might be whether they ever were in touch with the rest of America. Elites are, by definition, in a class apart from the rest of us.

The people who call me, write me or buttonhole me in public help keep me from losing touch. As some of them occasionally remind me, I’m not so “elite.”

Recently I heard from Gayla White, a longtime Daily Chronicle reader who recently moved from Waterman to the Grand Victorian of Sycamore. The move has been a bit of an adjustment, and with all of the changes she didn’t have time to sit down and write a letter, but she

NEW YORK – A New York man said he and his husband were removed from a JetBlue flight after his husband “expressed displeasure” about flying with Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner.

Matthew Lasner said on Twitter that JetBlue staff kicked him and his husband off the flight from New York’s Kennedy airport to Florida on Thursday after overhearing his husband’s remarks. Lasner tweeted

“We do it, though, because we love each other. That’s also the underlying reason for the season: The gift of Christ, and his love for mankind, to the world.”

I was glad Gayla called to share this with me. It is a simple truth, one I might overlook if someone didn’t stop to point it out to me.

Family files negligence lawsuit against Energym Gymnastics

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The family of a girl who police believe was abused by her gymnastics instructor at Energym twice called the gym about their daughter feeling uncomfortable in class this summer, but never got a response, according to a lawsuit filed in DeKalb County court.

The family is suing Sycamore-based Energym Gymnastics Inc., its owner, Andy Morreale, and Joseph R. Hannon, the former instructor who is being held in DeKalb County jail on charges including predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. The suit alleges that Morreale and Energym were neg- Joseph R. ligent in hiring Hannon Hannon as an instructor without a background check, which could have showed that he was on felony probation for an October 2013 drug charge, along with other arrests, including drug charges and a charge of resisting a peace officer.

The family filed the suit this week under a fictitious name to protect their privacy and the privacy of their daughter, who is one of two victims in incidents in which Hannon is charged.

The family seeks damages in excess of $50,000 for physical and psychological injury to the 9-year-old victim as well as her parents’ mental anguish.

Hannon, 21, was first arrested Dec. 7 in connection with a Nov. 25 incident involving another child. He has been charged with criminal sexual abuse of a child and predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, and could face up to 60 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge.

The family’s lawsuit said that the victim’s parents – referred to as John and Jane Doe – paid $210 to enroll their daughter – Joy Doe – in an eight-week “Ninja Zone” class at Energym. Hannon was one of three instructors teaching the hourlong class, according to the lawsuit.

Energym didn’t “disclose that a convicted felon on probation would be teaching the class,” according to the lawsuit.

back because she didn’t like the way one of the instructors touched her during the class.

“Jane Doe did not understand the extent or nature of the touching Joy had experienced,” according to the lawsuit.

The victim’s mother later called Energym at least twice to say that her daughter didn’t feel comfortable going to the class and left messages each time requesting a return call. No one from Energym responded, according to the lawsuit.

After a call from Sycamore police on Dec. 7, the parents asked the girl about her contact with Hannon. She burst into tears and told them that he had touched her underneath her shorts and underpants. The lawsuit also alleges that Hannon fondled and groped the

girl repeatedly during the class.

Hannon was charged with an additional count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child and predatory criminal sexual assault of a child after a forensic interview. Police said recently that they have identified at least three more victims in the case. Prosecutors have said that Hannon may have inappropriately touched 25 to 30 children at Energym.

Morreale said in an email this week that Energym had not conducted a background check on Hannon when he was first hired in September 2015 or when he was hired full time in August.

The suit alleges that Energym and Morreale were negligent in hiring Hannon, who was on felony probation at the time, that they failed to properly

supervise him and bear responsibility for what happened to Joy because the incidents occurred at Energym.

“As of 2016, Energym and Morreale knew or should have known that Hannon was particularly unfit to work as an instructor in close proximity to and in direct contact with children,” the lawsuit says, “due to his numerous convictions for crimes of moral turpitude and status as a convicted felon on probation.”

Morreale couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday. Court records didn’t indicate whether he had a lawyer.

Family holds rally advocating medical cannabis be used for treating autism

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Ihm family has exhausted 21 different treatment methods to control the violent outbursts of their 8-year-old son, Ethan, who has a severe form of autism.

No drug has been successful and institutionalization is becoming a more likely outcome, said Ethan’s brother, Elliott.

But still exploring other options, the Ihm family organized a rally Thursday afternoon in downtown DeKalb to implore the Illinois Department of Public Health to allow them to consider another possible treatment for Ethan, medical cannabis.

Signs reading “Help Legalize Medicine” and “Honk for Hash” crowded the corner of Lincoln Parkway and First Street. By 4:30 p.m., about 15 supporters were holding signs.

Elliott Ihm said that the aim wasn’t to allow medical cannabis as a first line of treatment for autism, nor were children meant to smoke the cannabis, since treatment methods can come in droplet form as well.

He added that he was unsure if medical cannabis would work in Ethan’s case, but wants to have the option.

Despite an 8-2 vote from the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board, a committee appointed by Gov. Bruce Rauner, Illinois Department of Public Health Director Nirav Shah rejected a request in January to have autism added to the list of conditions for which medical cannabis can be used as a treatment.

However, a successful lawsuit that deemed Shah’s actions unconstitutional forced the director to reconsider his decision by weighing the scientific evidence that supports medical cannabis as an autism treatment. Shah must make this decision

by February.

One of the signs provided the number to Shah’s office so passers-by could voice their opinions.

Elliott Ihm said that about seven of the rally participants were not people he recognized. One of which was Pat DelJonson, a member of the grass-roots group DeKalb Area Progressives.

DelJonson added that she would like to publicize the event via her group’s website and social media presence.

After the rally, supporters moved to the House Cafe at 5 p.m. to learn more about Ethan’s condition and ways to support the use of medical cannabis for autism. Free hot chocolate also was provided by the Common Grounds coffee shop in downtown DeKalb.

Twenty-eight states plus the District of Columbia have legalized medical cannabis. Warren Kenneth “Ken” Nelson, 91, of Malta, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center in DeKalb.

Ken was born November 16, 1925 in DeKalb County the son of Alfred John and Goldie Ethel (Lucas) Nelson. He attended one room country schools; the Brown School at University and Keslinger Rads and the Lang School at Lang Road and Fairview Drive in rural Malta. He graduated from Malta High School Class of 1943. Ken married Irene Jacobs on December 5, 1948 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in DeKalb. He was a member of the Malta Rifle Club in its day.

In 1975, he became involved with Carr Elevator in Malta and later owned it until 2013.

Ken loved nature, seasons, animals, flowers and soft music.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years Irene; daughter, Connie McCauley of DeKalb; four sons, Roger (Ann) and James (Carol) both of Malta, Douglas (Lisa) of DeKalb, Robert (Dena) of Springfield; twelve grandchildren, Jennifer (John Leo) Megli, Rachel (Aaron) Lutz, Jeremy Daley, Michael (Lala) Nelson, Christine (Jon) Taylor, Bradley (Shannon) Nelson, Scott (Stacy) Nelson, Keith (Danika) Nelson, Carl (Anna) Nelson, Emily (Joey) Gage, Thomas Nelson, Amanda Nelson; stepgranddaughter Rowena (Peter) Murdoch; fifteen great-grandchildren; brother, Leonard Nelson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law; brother, Alfred LeRoy Nelson; and son-in-laws, Timothy Daley and Edward McCauley.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 511 Russell Road, DeKalb, with the Rev. Ray Krueger officiating. Burial will follow at Malta Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, December 26, 2016 at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Roger. They were married for 74 years.

She is survived by her four daughters, Cynthia Rucker of San Benito Texas, Jacquelin (Gary) Johnson of Sandwich, Janice (Thomas) Erickson of Guy, Texas. and Stephanie (Douglas) Yingling also of Sandwich; ten grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

The university is facing a federal lawsuit from its former controller, Keith Jackson, who claims he was mistreated and forced out of the university.

Jackson said he became a target after October 2013, when he refused to sign off on the way the university wanted to set up the hiring contract for former CFO Nancy Suttenfield.

“Mr. Jackson refused to do so on the basis that the contract required the approval of the board of trustees, and because processing the payments would have violated the Illinois procurement laws that required competitive bidding,” the lawsuit states.

Jackson claims he was asked by Suttenfield to quit – at Baker’s behest – in May 2014, and was placed on leave when he refused.

Ron Walters, a consultant hired in

2014 to help on the campus initiatives, was paid more than $460,000 for about 18 months’ work. But he also was improperly reimbursed for more than $30,000 in travel expenses, for which he billed the university, the state Auditor General’s office found.

Baker said the university has revised some of its employment policies in an effort to increase public trust.

Specifically, Baker said there would be changes in employee classifications, and an “upgraded” whistleblower policy to protect employees who report any suspected legal and policy violations.

“To be clear, even when there is urgent need for change,” Baker wrote, “it is critical that policies, procedures, and protocols must be observed.”

In the past month, three cabinet-level administrators have announced they plan to leave the school: Vice President and General Counsel Jerry Blakemore, Vice President for Administration and Finance Alan Phillips and Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Eric Weldy.

DeKALB – The president of Northern Illinois University admitted Thursday that state regulations governing employment and public improvements were violated early in his tenure at the school and pledged that they would not re-occur.

Douglas Baker, who took over as NIU’s president in fall 2013, said that he took responsibility for the unidentified violations, which occurred at a time of transition where a state audit found at least one consultant was improperly compensated for travel from his home in Washington state to DeKalb.

“Investigations have substantiated that in 2013 and 2014 there were weaknesses in internal controls, some limited compliance violations, and lack of clarity of policies across multiple units,” Baker said in a statement posted on the NIU Today website. “Investigation did not yield evidence of substandard work, but it did identify issues with adminis-

tering certain employment, consulting, and capital works agreements.”

The university’s practices in hiring temporary employees has been the subject of a state investigation by the Office of Executive Inspector General. The university’s Executive Committee in November approved another $15,000 for legal expenses for Baker in that investigation, raising the total allowable to $165,000. Another $20,000 was approved for legal fees for Baker in an internal controls investigation.

The university also recently settled a lawsuit brought by former NIU Police Chief Donald Grady for just more than $1 million. Grady alleged that his civil rights had been violated when he was fired from his job in 2014.

Thursday was the last day of the semester at NIU, and documents showing the results of the investigations Baker referred to were not immediately available. The Daily Chronicle has submitted a Freedom of Information Act request seeking them.

Laid-off DeKalb workers identified; 1 running for office

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – City documents show that two city employees being laid off as a result of fiscal 2017 budget cuts are senior accountant Ted Kozinski and project implementation engineer Michael Bauling.

Bauling will be running for 4th Ward alderman in 2017. He had worked for the city since 1999 and Kozinski had worked for the city since 1988, records show, and both earned annual salaries of $100,400.

Both were placed on paid leave Dec. 13, the day after the City Council approved a budget plan that called for reducing $100,000 in personnel spending.

Letters sent to each show that they will be on paid leave until Dec. 31, when their positions are eliminated. Each will receive $300 for outplacement services, records show.

City Manager Anne Marie Gaura had declined to identify the names of the employees. She was not in the office Thursday and could not be reached for comment.

Bauling said that he had thought about running for the school board in the past, but could not run for an elected position in DeKalb as a city employee because of a conflict of interest.

“I have been invested in the city

since I came here in 1993, and I’ve had three kids in this school system,” Bauling said. “I can provide an enlightening spot for the council as someone who has come from city staff.”

He will be running against current 4th Ward Alderman Bob Snow and Patrick Fagan.

“I’m not looking for a group to back me, and I don’t have an agenda,” Bauling said. “I stand on my merits and my integrity.”

As the project implementation engineer for DeKalb, Bauling was responsible for overseeing all construction outside of buildings, such as roadway expansions and bike paths. Before working for the city, the 49-year-old worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation.

According to DeKalb’s city employee benefits handbook, all laid off employees who have more than two years of consecutive service receive two weeks’ pay as severance or an amount agreed upon by the city manager.

In addition to the two layoffs, records show firefighter/paramedics Thomas Guthrie and Mark Wilcox will be retiring this month.

Guthrie, who has been in his position since 1990 and earns a $98,700 salary, is to retire Tuesday. Wilcox, who has been with the city since 1991 and earns $95,800 a year, will retire Dec. 31.

DeKalb is not the only place where package theft around the holidays has become a problem.

On Dec. 12, a 28-year-old Aurora man was charged with felony theft after police went undercover to investigate a recent spike in stolen packages in the city. Officers followed a suspect whose license plate was identified in a witness’ photo from an earlier theft, according to the Aurora Police Department Facebook page.

Chicago neighborhoods also have been targets for this trend, inspiring a community watch group to form after a package theft was caught on camera on the northwest side of the city.

Surveillance footage outside a Dunning home shows a person walking up to the porch, removing the package’s contents and walking away. The incident was one of 13 package thefts reported in the neighborhood this month, according to NBCChicago.com.

DeKALB – Thieves have been taking advantage of holiday gift orders in the past few weeks by stealing packages from the front porches of DeKalb homes.

Police are warning residents of the trend and offering tips to prevent theft.

Suggestions include trying to be home when packages are expected to arrive, tracking packages for expected delivery times, requesting phone delivery alerts and keeping porch lights on for night deliveries.

Another tip is to have packages delivered to a neighbor, friend or place of business if no one will be home at the time of delivery.

The thefts occurred on the east side of DeKalb, and police are providing extra patrols in the area and continuing their search for suspects, according to a DeKalb Police Department news re-

CHICAGO – Jurors who deliberated Thursday for their first full day at the biggest street-gang trial in recent Chicago history head into the holidays facing the daunting task of sorting through months of evidence in a complex racketeering case against purported leaders of the South Side Hobos.

To convict, it won’t be enough for the 12 jurors to conclude the Hobos killed one government witness in front of his terrified stepchildren, robbed then-NBA player Bobby Simmons of his $200,000 diamond chain at gunpoint or committed multiple other crimes. They must find the six defendants coordinated their crimes within an organized criminal enterprise and shared their illicit profits.

Deliberations in the trial, which is drawing to a close in a year when homicides spiked in the city, came after three months of testimony and four

News from across the state Illinois man sentenced in child porn, knife attack case

PEKIN – A central Illinois man has been sentenced to 32 years in prison for possessing child porn and trying to kill a man who prevented his knife-wielding assault on a room full of children in 2015.

Dustin Brown, 20, learned his punishment Wednesday after pleading guilty but mentally ill in November to possessing child porn, attempted murder and armed violence, the Pekin Daily Times reported.

Tazewell County Circuit Judge Paul Gilfillan said Brown’s mental conditions, including an intellect years behind his age, and sexual abuse he said he allegedly suffered as a child might have contributed to his actions, but that Brown understood they were criminal.

Two of the charges stemmed from his October 2015 attack when he entered the Morton Public Library with two knives, saying he was going to kill more than a dozen children. Army veteran James Vernon, then 75, was injured as he fought

days of closing arguments in federal court in Chicago. Jurors were expected to take Friday through Monday off and resume deliberations Tuesday.

After sitting through four seven-hour days of testimony per week for months, jurors might not begin discussing the evidence in earnest until after Christmas, said Jeff Cramer, a former federal prosecutor in Chicago who’s not involved in the case.

“The evidence has Paris Poe been weighty and disturbing,” he said. “They may need time to decompress.”

Alleged Hobos boss Gregory “Bowlegs” Chester, alleged Hobos hit man Paris Poe and four alleged cohorts are charged with racketeering conspiracy, including nine killings. If jurors enter guilty verdicts on racketeering conspiracy and decide the conspiracy included murders, they could go to prison for life.

But during his closing this week, Chester’s lawyer likened law enforcement to an archer who first shoots an arrow and then draws a target around wherever it lands.

“It was always a fix,” Beau Brindley said. “It was always a fraud.”

When Chester surprised courtroom observers by choosing to testify, he almost immediately addressed the issue of coordinated crimes. The 39-year-old promptly conceded he sold heroin, but asserted it was a one-man operation and that his co-defendants had nothing to do with his crimes and he had nothing to do with theirs. He also repeatedly insisted that the Hobos gang didn’t even exist – despite his full-arm tattoo that read, “Hobo: The Earth is Our Turf.”

The most chilling testimony involved the allegation that Poe, at Chester’s urging, killed gang associate-turned-informant Keith Daniels in 2013 days after Chester’s arrest and after Daniels testified to a grand jury. Prosecutors said Poe shot Dan-

iels over and over at close range as the man’s 4-year-old stepdaughter and 6-year-old stepson looked on.

Daniels’ girlfriend, Shanice Peatry, witnessed the shooting and testified that she immediately recognized Poe, although the defense questioned how she could have been so sure since the attacker wore a mask. Poe’s dreadlocks and a distinctive limp convinced her she identified him correctly, she said. Poe’s lawyer had him walk in front of the jury to demonstrate that Poe doesn’t limp.

In a video statement played to jurors, the boy described someone suddenly appearing and shooting through the family-car windows. He added, “I was covering my ears because the gunshots were too loud.”

Prosecutor Derek Owens told jurors during his closing argument that the killing of Daniels and others was meant as a message from the Hobos that, “You don’t snitch on the Hobos and think you’ll get away with it.”

Brown, managing to pin Brown onto a table and hold him until help arrived.

Brown told police that the children at the library had become targets of revenge after he was charged in February 2015 with 22 counts of possessing child pornography. Brown was free on bond when the incident at the library occurred.

Gilfillan said the community needs protection from someone “who commits fairly horrific crimes” that stem from disturbed fixations that will remain difficult to control.

Brown will be eligible to receive mental health treatment, but must serve his time in prison, Assistant State’s Attorney Kevin Johnson said previously. Time spent since the incident and good behavior could reduce Brown’s prison term to about 22 years. State law requires Brown to serve at least 85 percent of his total term.

The free rides have been sponsored by MillerCoors for several years. Organizers said it’s a safe travel option for people celebrating.

Riders shouldn’t use their fare cards during the free ride period because no refunds will be issued.

Last year, about 113,000 bus and train rides were taken during the hours of the promotion.

Last week at a news conference Ban praised Lincoln, calling him a “heroic force for equality, integration and reconciliation.”

Ban became leader of the United Nations in 2007. His successor is former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres, who takes over in January.

Chicago offers free bus, train rides New Year’s Eve

CHICAGO – New Year’s Eve revelers in Chicago will be able to ride the bus and train for free.

The Chicago Transit Authority announced Wednesday that free rides will begin at 10 p.m. Dec. 31 and run through 4 a.m. Jan. 1. The CTA will increase the frequency of service on some popular routes that night.

Outgoing U.N. leader praises Lincoln in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has traveled to Illinois in his final days in office.

The (Springfield) State-Journal Register reported the outgoing secretary-general stopped Wednesday at Abraham Lincoln’s tomb. He said Ban Ki-moon the 16th president “exemplified how a leader can inspire people to unite and reconcile and integrate.” While in Springfield, Ban also visited the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Earlier Wednesday, he spoke at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. The (Decatur) Herald & Review reported he said his visit comes during “transition and uncertainty.”

Chicago police to take on ‘code of silence’ on the force

CHICAGO – Chicago’s police chief said the department will attack the “code of silence” by making it easier for officers to report police misconduct and by making it tougher on officers who harass those who do come forward.

In a Wednesday interview, Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in the coming months the department will provide a hotline for officers to report police misconduct. He also said a policy is being put in place in which officers who try to intimidate or ostracize those who come forward will face discipline and could be fired.

The release of a video showing a white police officer fatally shooting black teenager Laquan McDonald and the release of police reports in which officers’ accounts contradicted video accounts have shined a spotlight on the so-called “code of silence.”

The post-9/11 registration program for immigrant men arriving mainly from the Islamic world hasn’t been enforced since 2011.

Although it never prohibited travel for men and boys from the more than 20 affected countries, including Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, Trump’s suggestions about banning Muslim immigrants from the U.S. have led to fears that it could be reinstated and used for new and enhanced purposes.

Trump says U.S. should expand nuclear capability

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday abruptly called for the U.S. to “greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability” until the rest of the world “comes to its senses” regarding nuclear weapons.

His comments on Twitter came hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin said strengthening his country’s nuclear capabilities should be a chief military objective in the coming year. The president-elect’s statement also followed his meetings a day earlier with top Pentagon officials and defense contractors.

Trump, who is spending the holidays at his palatial private club in Florida, did not expand on the actions he wants the U.S. to take or say why he raised the issue Thursday.

Spokesman Jason Miller said the president-elect was referring to the threat of nuclear proliferation “particularly to and among terrorist organizations and unstable and rogue regimes.” Miller said Trump sees modernizing the nation’s deterrent capability “as a vital way to pursue peace through strength.”

If Trump were to seek an expansion of the nuclear stockpiles, it would mark a sharp shift in U.S. national security policy. President Barack Obama has made nuclear non-proliferation a centerpiece of his agenda, calling in 2009 for the U.S. to lead efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons – a goal he acknowledged would not be accomplished quickly or easily.

Still, the U.S. has been moving forward on plans to upgrade its aging nuclear arsenal.

Earlier this year, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said the Pentagon planned to spend $108 billion over the next five years to sustain and improve its nuclear force.

The U.S. and Russia hold the vast majority of the world’s nuclear weapons. In 2010, the two countries signed the New START treaty capping the number of nuclear warheads and missile launchers each country can possess.

The agreement is in effect until 2021 and can be extended for another five years.

Thomas Karako, senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the last comprehensive review of the U.S. nuclear force – which was conducted during Obama’s first term – occurred against the backdrop of efforts to reset relations between Washington and Moscow. The relationship has since deteriorated, with Obama and Putin clashing over Russia’s provocations in Ukraine and support for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

“We need to candidly asses what the environment is and what the prospects are for Russian compliance with current treaties,” Karako said.

Trump has repeatedly called for closer relations with Russia and has spoken favorably about Putin. Democrats have questioned his ties to the Kremlin, particularly after U.S. intelligence officials assessed that Russia had interfered in the U.S. election on Trump’s behalf.

Parity elusive for those suffering mental illness What would you choose: long wait or expensive?

Nobody wants either, but when it comes to mental health care, these are usually the only options.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness recently released a report saying, “Despite the federal parity law, the promise of parity remains elusive.”

Mental health parity, in which mental health insurance benefits are no less restrictive than general medical benefits, has been federally mandated in some fashion for almost 30 years.

But before the Affordable Care Act, major depressive disorders, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia and similar mental health issues were put in the “high risk” insurance pool and considered a pre-existing condition – which meant either no independent insurance coverage or ridiculously high monthly rates.

With Obamacare, people suffering from mental health issues have access to more affordable health insurance, but not enough resources are available for it to be beneficial.

Long wait-list periods, overwhelmed medical professionals and/or spotty insurance coverage are unfortunately normal occurrences – if there’s even a mental health practitioner nearby.

NAMI in November released a study showing about one out of four Americans didn’t have an in-network mental health medication prescriber available to them.

Insurance plans also can have confusing or outdated information. People seeking mental health care can find that psychiatrists listed as “in-network” are not accepting new patients, are retired/not practicing or have moved.

Some people decide to forgo the confusing and restrictive network and pay out-of-pocket for mental health services, which can get expensive fast.

And even with paying out-of-pocket, mental health practitioners aren’t widely accessible.

Hogg Foundation of Mental Health reports that 206 out of 254 Texas counties had some kind of medical health professional shortage as of July 2015, that 185 of those counties didn’t have a single psychiatrist and that 149 didn’t have a single licensed psychologist.

More than 3 million Texans didn’t have reasonable access to mental health care in 2015.

How is this parity?

First, we decorate as we push past despair The day after Thanksgiving is usually when I begin decorating for Christmas, but Nov. 25, I turned to my husband on the verge of despair.

“I don’t know,” I said. “I don’t think I have it in me.”

The sound of those words, in my voice, was enough to startle me out of my funk. This may feel like the season of triage, but we are better than our worst fears. Character is revealed not by who we are when things are going our way but in the people we become when everything seems to be going wrong. Never have I been more worried about the future of our country, but I’m no quitter.

For me, hope starts with Christmas.

I traipsed down the basement stairs and opened the holiday storage bins to drag up everything – and I mean everything – with the help of my husband. I could tell by the look on his face that he was a little surprised by my request after I’d just told him I was in no mood, but he’s been married to me long enough to trust the conclusion, no matter how I get there.

A partial list of the holiday haul:

The one in the front window holds all the White House Historical Association ornaments. The larger one, in the family room, is laden with decades’ worth of handmade ornaments. It looks ridiculous, and I love it.

• The small wooden creche from my childhood, boxed with the elves wearing striped pajamas and smiles of hysteria on their plastic faces. The elves originally arrived at our home in the 1960s, wrapped around bottles of dishwashing detergent. I keep thinking it was lemon fresh Joy because that’s what Mom often used, but maybe I just like saying lemon fresh Joy. Anyway, Mom soon promoted the elves to stand sentry next to baby Jesus

in the made-in-Italy Nativity scene that rested on top of our TV console.

Only once did I ever suggest to Mom that elves were not in attendance at the birth of Jesus.

“Oh, really,” she said as she looped the elves’ arms and sat them cross-legged next to the three wise men. “And you were there, were you?”

How does an 8-year-old argue with that?

• The crayon-colored cardboard Santa I made in first grade. His arms and legs are connected to a string that dangles between his legs. Pull it and he appears to be dancing, if by “dancing” we mean what happens after Santa has consumed a half-dozen boilermakers.

• The stockings to be hung by the chimney with care, especially because the fireplace is electric and has no chimney and is so hot that our dog, Franklin, starts panting whenever he sits in front of it for more than five minutes, which he often does. We try not to think about what that says about his judgment, as he is perfect in every way. We just slide him toward us and say, “Good boy.”

The stockings are the thing right now, because they force me to keep trying.

After every grandchild’s birth, five times now, I pull out the bin of felt and design a stocking just for that child. I have to update the stockings this year.

Leo and Jackie now have hair, and Carolyn and Milo are just old enough to notice the felt faces that will return their smiles.

“Look at that,” I said to my husband this week, pointing to the 16 stockings – of course, Franklin has one – dangling from our mantel. “Look at who we’ve become.”

As is the case with most marriages, we started out so much smaller, but love has a way of helping us grow. For a little while, I’m going to focus on that.

Happy holidays, plural, to those who celebrate. To all of you who are struggling this time of year, may the season land gently.

Reliving great memories of Christmases past

It is hard to believe the Creator of our universe with its billions of galaxies could have sent Himself to this little blue blip not so long ago in the form of an infant born to a virgin, to be first worshipped by illiterate shepherds where He lay in a feed trough, livestock peering down at Him, Eastern potentates following a star to the site. But here we are again, singing those songs, so we shall see.

My mother loved Christmas with her whole heart. With six children and no credit cards and my father ever watchful for unnecessary expense, Christmas was a mountain for Grace to climb, requiring endurance, planning, stealth and skill, but she brought it off to perfection every year, until she was in her 90s and then she coasted on her memories.

Her mother died when my mother was 7 and Mother had no memory of her, which troubled her deeply. She looked at photos of her mother, tall, haggard, from the early 1920s, and tried to dredge up some recollection, anything at all, the sound of her voice, what she cooked, what her hand felt like. Grace was third from the end of 11 children, the 12th having died with the

Complaint was not encouraged in that family, and mental health was not a topic for discussion, but clearly Christmas was a shining moment of gaiety in a family of modest means and strict decorum.

When I was 19, my older brother asked me to look after his house over Christmas so he and his young family could drive out to New York for a week.

His house was in the woods and I, intoxicated by Thoreau at the time, was more dramatic than necessary and announced I would spend Christmas alone out there “to figure things out.” A poem of mine got in the college literary magazine, with the lines:

The ice is thin and deep is the dark Below, green lights in the trees and red, Winding my way into the winter mist.

Coat open and the silver blades are sharp And that long long bend ahead Will take me out and away from you and all of this.

Which was about skating but a girl I knew thought it was suicidal and she came out to the woods to visit me and bring me dinner from her mother – turkey, candied yams, cranberry, in tinfoil. We lit candles and sat and meditated on the mystery of life, and it was pleasant to have someone be so concerned about my well-being.

At the time, I thought of suicide as poetic, an artistic choice stemming from great emotional depths. Two months later, her boyfriend Leeds was killed when a drunken driver pulled out of a parking lot and into his mother’s car coming back home from a play at the Guthrie Theater. Twenty-some years later, sunk in depression, my friend filled her pockets with rocks and paddled a canoe out to the middle of a lake and capsized it and drowned.

Life is good. On a winter night, looking into a fire, our dead are around us, testifying to that. The books on the shelves, the young people around the

table, the carols on the radio in the kitchen, the shining snow on the hill that looks out at the Mississippi River.

As you get old, you gain a strippeddown life, minus the clutter and hullabaloo, the excess food and alcohol, the meaningless gifts, and it is quite satisfying to sit with your true love in candlelight, a plate of cookies on the table, and let memories come and go.

My mother is there. It’s 6 a.m., still dark out, and I’ve come down the stairs in my pajamas to the darkened tree, a note from Santa, the crumbs of the gingersnap I left for him, and I hear the padding of bare feet on the stair, and suddenly the tree bursts into light, and my mother is standing there in a raggedy robe. She missed her dead mother and found her every year in making Christmas for us.

Even after she moved to Florida, she flew back for a proper Minnesota Christmas with frost on the windows and wind in the chimney. What you do for children is never wasted: this Christmas will live on and nourish them long after you have faded away.

Preschool celebrates Christmas DAILY CHRONICLE

Children at Little Lambs Preschool of Immanuel Lutheran Church culminated their Christmas unit with a program for family and friends where they shared music and heard the story of the “Starry Starry Night” when Jesus was born.

Following the program, they enjoyed making special hot chocolate creations with Christmas cookies.

In this season of remembering others, Little Lambs children participated in the Thanksgiving basket donations to Salvation Army, as well collecting books and conducting a read-a-thon to benefit the DeKalb Bookcase Project.

Little Lambs Preschool is a private Christian preschool serving children ages 3 to 5, and has limited openings available for the spring semester on Monday/Wednesday or Monday/Wednesday/Friday. The school is open to all children.

The preschool is located at 511 Russell Road in DeKalb and has been serving the DeKalb community for 20 years.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will host a traditional Holy Communion service with festive musical selections at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve, Saturday. Choral music will be offered by the adult choir before the service at 5:45 p.m.

“The service is designed to help adults and children explore and understand the Christmas story,” the Rev. Stacy Walker-Frontjes said in a news release. All ages are welcome.

The First United Methodist Church of DeKalb invites the community to a birthday party.

On Christmas morning, at the 9 and 10:30 a.m. worship services, there will be a birthday party for Jesus. Children and adults are welcome to wear their pajamas. Children may bring a nonviolent toy to be blessed, and there will be birthday cake in the dining room between the services.

There also will be two Christmas Eve services on Saturday.

Fifth-grader gives up birthday gifts to help school program DAILY CHRONICLE The Sycamore Music Boosters recently received a special donation from Sycamore student Noelle Sharp.

Noelle is a fifth-grade student at North Grove Elementary School in Sycamore and is a budding musician playing violin in orchestra and clarinet in band, and is a former elementary choir member.

When she heard of the Sycamore School District budget cut to the Elementary After-School Orchestra and Band program, she was inspired to do something to help support this program.

“I wanted to do something to help bring this very important program back and help my community,” Noelle said in a news release. “The Sycamore Music Boosters is a great organization that helps students become talented musicians.”

At Noelle’s birthday party, she requested that her friends and family make a donation for the Sycamore Music Boosters instead of bringing gifts.

When she delivered the donation, she requested the money be used to help support the Elementary After-School Orchestra and Band Program.

“Young people like Noelle are an inspiration,” Sycamore Music Boosters President Lisa Smith

said in the release. “To see our youth wanting to make a difference is exciting! We are so thankful for Noelle’s generous and thoughtful donation and will honor her request to apply it toward the Elementary After-School program.”

The 2016-17 Elementary After-School Music Program is funded in part by a by a Wurlitzer Foundation Fund grant from the DeKalb County Community Foundation. It is also partially funded by the Sycamore Music Boosters.

The Sycamore Music Department and the Sycamore Music Boosters, a nonprofit volunteer organization that supports all students in grades kindergarten through 12, encourages others to consider making a donation to support these music programs. Engelkes eyeing trip to championships After missing an at-large bid, senior aiming to not leave berth up to fate

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois wrestler Trace Engelkes raced back to his apartment after getting out of class on the afternoon of March 8.

Engelkes, who had a chance to earn an at-large bid for the 2015-16 NCAA Championships at 174 pounds, eagerly refreshed his phone as the NCAA was preparing to tweet out the field. He waited to see if his 21-12 performance on the year was good enough to nab one of the four at-large bids.

“It felt like I was watching ‘The Hunger Games.’ They’re drawing names and everybody in the crowd is nervous and they go weight class by weight class,” Engelkes said. “I know there’s only a certain amount of (at-large) bids that will be called. I watch one bid go. I watch two bids go. Now I’m sick to my stomach and I never felt that sense of helplessness before.”

The helplessness turned to sorrow when the NCAA tweeted out the qualifiers at 12:31 p.m.

Engelkes didn’t make it.

While four members of the Huskies went to the NCAA Championships at Madison Square Garden in New York City – Shawn Scott, Steve Bleise, Austin Eicher and Andrew Morse – Engelkes stayed home, struggling to watch any of the matches at the biggest tournament of the season.

“Trace keeps things in perspective very well, but he was bummed,” Northern Illinois coach Ryan Ludwig said.

“He was happy for his teammates – four guys went to the national championship. He was really happy for those guys because he’s a team guy. On the other hand, he was very disappointed he wasn’t on the trip. He mentioned he had a hard time watching the matches and seeing what was going on down

It’s no surprise that Ludwig said that Engelkes had a tremendous offseason.

Fueled partly by the disappointment, he earned All-American status by placing fourth at the University Freestyle Nationals in Akron, Ohio, in June, and Engelkes said that coming into his senior season this year, he knows his body and how to physically prepare better than he ever has. The moment of learning he didn’t make the NCAA Championships last season still enters his mind – “I think a lot about how bad it felt because I imagine it happening again,” he said – but the preparation has paid off so far in the 2016-17 campaign.

So far this season, Engelkes is off to an 8-1 start with four pins. He said a lot of the credit goes to the brutal offsea-

son and preseason training – particularly a dreaded workout that consists of a combined 3.5 miles of sprinting.

“It’s a necessary evil because wrestling isn’t comfortable,” Engelkes said.

“It’s not supposed to be comfortable.

The more you get comfortable with being uncomfortable, the better you’re going to do. The training for wrestling is just to do what sucks as much as you can for as long as you can and learn to deal with it.”

Engelkes said he tries not to decide whether a season is a failure based off wins and losses, but admits it’s tough not to have the expectation be a trip to the 2017 NCAA Championships at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Not only that, but he wants to win the whole thing.

While Engelkes still has the rest of his senior season to go, Ludwig said

he sees a future coach in the Huskie wrestler. He sees the adoration of breaking down technique and sharing it with others. Engelkes, who is a captain for the Huskies, has coached youth wrestling since he was a freshman in college, and the former IHSA state champion from Winnebago talks enthusiastically about front headlocks, scramble positions and technical wins.

Wrestling, Engelkes passionately said, is a sport of inseparable opposites. It’s part machismo and part analytical. It’s part art and part violence.

“I always view it as a combat sport.

When you break it down to its basic element, it’s a hand-to-hand combat sport. It’s no different from any martial art, it’s no different from jiu-jitsu or submission wrestling,” he said. “I view it in that way, but I also view it like it’s a chess match. It’s as much strategic as it is violent and explosive. It all comes together. It’s an art form – like a theatrical production of athleticism.

It’s that technical aspect that turns it into an art.

“When I watch a wrestling match, it’s not like watching football. You can watch a football game and see a play develop, but wrestling is very singular,” he continued. “It’s watching one person develop their own style. It’s watching one person develop what they want to happen. If you look at a sitcom, you have the person who created the sitcom and wrote it and then you have all these people who are changing it.

That’s what I like about wrestling. The person who wrote it gets the final say.

There’s nobody on the outside dictating what happens. It’s you and the other guy. If you’re a better writer, you’re going to write the ending. You’re going to write the story.”

For Engelkes, the hope is the final chapter of that story is set in St. Louis.

This current year has a bad reputation.

Sure, celebrity deaths seemed particularly cruel, movies particularly awful, and perhaps there were other miscellaneous VIEWS causes of stress.

Eddie As we Carifio started compiling our annual top 10 stories of the year, we began to realize that the overall crappiness most people associated with 2016 didn’t exactly apply to local sports.

Ever since both the DeKalb and Sycamore football teams reached the semifinals, we tried wrapping our brains around which is the bigger story. One of them would have to be the No. 1 story of the year, and one would have to be the runner-up. But how do you judge which was better?

And that’s just the top spot. A football team snapping a playoff drought that was in its fourth decade would be a huge deal, like No. 1 huge most years.

Then you had top-five worthy stories, such as three teams making the Final Four of state tournaments – not including the aforementioned football teams. Or a track team sharing a state title. Or a gymnastics team taking second in state. Or a volleyball team reaching the final eight for the first time in program history.

But we’re not even into individual performances, which include a state champion swimmer for the first time, a track champion, a track runner-up and a gymnastics champion – even a bowler rolling a perfect game to kick off a huge postseason run.

And we haven’t even gotten into NIU yet.

Pairing this down to 10 would have been a disaster. Opening it up to 15 or 20 would take away some of the import.

So what’s a sports staff to do?

So starting Saturday, we begin our three-part series of lists. First up, we’ll look at the Top 5 teams of 2016. These encompassed the whole season. Then we’ll look at the Top 5 individual performances of the year in the Monday paper. Not the best players – we do our

CHICAGO — At the end, not much was getting through to Helen Weithman. The memories she collected over 98 years were slipping away.

When Kathleen Strobel talked to her, she could tell by the blank look on her mom’s face that she didn’t understand a lot of what she was saying.

Then came the World Series.

“She really came alive when it started and they had the Cubs games on,” Strobel said. “When we started talking about it she said, ‘They haven’t won since I was born.’ It was probably the last thing we shared with her because she died on November 29th.”

Strobel hasn’t wondered if the hope of finally witnessing her Cubbies win it all added a little time to her mom’s life.

Studies have long suggested no one can will themselves to stay alive just a little bit longer to reach a milestone event such as a birthday, holiday, wedding or World Series.

Try telling that to the families of some Cubs fans who are convinced their loved ones hung on to see the team win its first Series in 108 years.

Robert Matijevich doesn’t know much about all the studies. He just knows what he saw at the North Chicago home where he lived with his father.

“He was really going downhill but in the World Series he was eating better, sleeping more,” Matijevich said of his 88-year-old father, John. “When the Cubs won, he said, ‘They did it in my lifetime.’ ” He went to bed and died that night.

Did the older Matijevich stick around long enough to see the Cubs win the World Series?

“I really think that was the reason, I really do,” his son said.

In 2004, as Boston was basking in an at-long-last World Series championship, statisticians at Ohio State University threw water on all those stories about dying fans who kept themselves alive long enough to witness the first Red Sox title in 86 years. Their study

Allen suspended indefinitely for third tripping incident

Grayson Allen’s latest antics may have once again tripped up No. 5 Duke.

Allen was suspended indefinitely from the team Thursday after the preseason AP All-American tripped an Elon player – the third time he has been involved in a tripping incident this calendar year.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski explained the suspension in a brief statement, saying the program “needed to take further steps regarding his actions that do not meet the standards of Duke basketball.”

Idaho tops Colorado State in third-highest scoring bowl game

BOISE, Idaho – Matt Linehan threw for 381 yards and four touchdowns and ran for a another score to help Idaho beat Colorado State, 61-50, on Thursday night in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in the third-highest scoring game in bowl history.

Idaho (9-4) matched its highest victory total since moving to FBS in 1996, but the victory will do nothing to quell the debate over the school’s decision to move back down to FCS play. In April, the Sun Belt informed the school it was dropping Idaho after the 2017 season.

Colorado State (7-6) finished with a bowl loss for the second straight year.

After a scoreless first quarter, it appeared that both teams had dug in for a defensive battle. But that quickly dissipated as the teams started rolling up points.

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Indians swung for the free-agent fences and connected: Edwin Encarnacion is joining the AL champions.

Capping a year in which they came within one victory of winning the World Series for the first time since 1948, the Indians agreed to terms with the veteran slugger on a $60 million, three-year contract Thursday.

The deal includes a club option for 2020 that, if exercised, would make it worth $80 million over four years.

The agreement is contingent upon Encarnacion passing a physical after the holidays, two people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

PHILADELPHIA – The New York Giants will have to wait a while to make the playoffs. Malcolm Jenkins had the second two-interception game of his eight-year career, returning one for a touchdown, and the Philadelphia Eagles snapped a fivegame slide by beating the Giants, 24-19, on Thursday night. Bloomingdale resident, speaking about her 82-year-old husband, who died Nov. 18 Cubs beat the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, the Indians in the World Series and then celebrated with millions of fans at a massive parade and rally.

At his bedside a few days before he died Nov. 18 was a gift from his son-inlaw: a replica of the World Series trophy.

“It gave him a lot of joy,” said his wife. “He was so thrilled after all those years of waiting.”

And that, she said, is helping her get through this first holiday season without her husband, who even at 82 could recite the names of the starting lineup of the 1945 Cubs. “I am so happy he got to experience that,” she said.

Roger Sieben could see what the win meant to his 105-year-old mother, Suzanne. Weeks afterward, she remembered only bits and pieces about the World Series victory party at her nursing home in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, the Cubs cake, the staffer dressed like the late Cubs announcer Harry Caray and the singing of “Take Me Out To The Ball Game.” But the woman who lived most of her life about a mile from Wrigley Field, close enough to hear the roar of the crowd if the wind was blowing just right, could remember with absolute clarity that the Cubs had won it all.

Then, after getting a letter from the hospice about this 105-year-old Cubs fan, the team sent up a package containing a shirt, decals, a photograph of the late Cubs great Ernie Banks and a note thanking her.

“When the package came she was just overwhelmed that they would remember her,” her son said. “That was one of the last memories she would have.”

She died Dec. 5.

concluded there was no evidence that cancer patients willed themselves to live just a bit longer.

“You’d hear it all the time, that a nurse said so and so hung on until after Christmas, and it’s a nice story,” said the study’s co-author, Dr. Donn Young, a now-retired researcher at the university’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. What is more likely, he said, is explained in another study that found people remember positive events more than they do negative ones – meaning that nurses and other caregivers are more likely to recall those patients who made it through the holidays than those who didn’t.

Still, Young acknowledged that some of the ailing might eat better, more faithfully take their medicine and get plenty of rest in the hopes of reaching a milestone. And there is no underestimating the value of the smiles and the general bliss for Cubs fans the night of Nov. 2 when the World Series ended safely in Anthony Rizzo’s glove during an epic Game 7 in Cleveland. There is no forgetting that, at least for a little while, the distraction that the Cubs provided to those who had just hours or days to live.

That showed up in the death notices – long a place where the families have included loved ones’ allegiance to the Cubs – in the days after the Series.

The Cubs’ win “was one of his happiest moments as he went through treatments and rehabilitation” for a nerve disease, read the death notice for the Rev. Patrick Cecil, a Catholic priest in Chicago, who died Nov. 14. “He will be sharing that victory with those from the Cecil family that have preceded him.”

It was a similar story for Marvin Peterson.

“He was thinking the (National League) pennant would be the only thing he’d get,” Margaret Peterson of suburban Bloomingdale said of her 82-year-old husband, who was dying of cancer at the time.

Washington brings potent passing game to Soldier Field

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – Cornerbacks discuss having a short memory, and that’s especially important for a Bears secondary when the last play it had was giving up a 60-yarder from Aaron Rodgers to Jordy Nelson.

It also will help them get ready for Christmas Eve, when that secondary has to face Washington’s second-ranked passing offense.

“They have a talented group,” cornerback Tracy Porter said. “You have DeSean [Jackson], you have Pierre [Garcon], you have Jordan [Reed], you have the young guy [Jamison] Crowder. So we have a task set up for us.”

Jackson, Crowder and Garcon each has gone over 800 yards receiving this season, then add in Reed (646 yards) and Vernon Davis (521 yards), and quarterback Kirk Cousins isn’t short on weapons. Coverage hasn’t been a major issue for the Bears’ young secondary, but the group still has struggled mightily to force a turnover with a league-low 10 takeaways.

“We have to do a better job on the back end of attacking the ball when it’s in the air, making plays on the ball when it’s in the air,” Porter said. “We do a decent job for the most part, but we want to do that more often. We have to do that. It’s just simple and plain.”

To help the secondary, the Bears will have to keep up a pass rush that is third in the NFL in sacks per pass attempt, but outside linebacker Leonard Floyd knows that Washington’s offensive line provides a challenge.

“They have pretty good tackles on both sides,” the rookie said. “They’re physical, come off the ball pretty physical. It’ll be a good matchup. I can’t wait for it.”

Washington is the third-best team in the NFL protecting the quarterback.

“It’s very important to get pressure to get [Cousins] off his spot, get him to get out of the pocket to make throws he’s not used to making outside the pocket,” said Floyd, who added that he expects to be used in coverage more on Saturday than he has this season.

Rondo shows leadership

CHICAGO – During his four stops in 10-plus NBA seasons, Rajon Rondo has developed something of a reputation.

Assist machine, All-Star, world champion. Loner, malcontent, uncoachable.

Some of those characterizations are fair, some may be overblown. But these days, as the Bulls twist and sputter through a 1-4 stretch, including Wednesday’s 107-97 home loss to Washington, Rondo stepped into the role the club hoped he’d fill when it signed the 30-year-old point guard over the summer: team leader.

Depending on who you ask, the Bulls’ struggles come down to shooting. Or chemistry. Or defense. Or predictable offensive sets.

The latter was alluded to by Dwyane Wade after the loss to the Wizards, in which the Bulls’ offensive flow came

to a near halt after a productive first quarter.

But a day later, Rondo, who has been critical of past coaches and who earlier this month received a one-game suspension for a confrontation with associate head coach Jim Boylen, didn’t want to hear about any issues with the game plan.

“It’s not the play-calling,” Rondo said. “I think it’s the excuses.

“I dislike that when things go wrong, at times we seem like a team of excuses. And that’s just not how you win at basketball.

“Players are the ones out on the court making the plays. That’s what it is. Everyone has to man up, look themselves in the mirror and find a way to make this team better.”

The individual performances mostly come from individual sports, but that’s not to say teamsport players won’t pop up on the list or weren’t eligible. The games didn’t have to be playoff games, but it sure helps make a game memorable by having do-or-die stakes.

In the end, we wanted to make sure the best of 2016 in DeKalb County athletics was highlighted, and we felt this was the best way to go about it.

So what should be done? Focus on the total risk.

To that end, the European Food Safety Authority has created the benchmark lower-dose limit, meaning the dose that would increase the risk of cancer by 1 percent.

Consuming more than two servings of rice cereal a day would equal this dose. So, if you are transitioning your child to solid foods and they’re consuming three or four servings of rice cereal a day, you should reassess your child’s diet. This is especially true if you feed your child organic brown rice.

A big caveat is the specific risk of cancer from rice consumption is not known.

Researchers have not studied the connection between rice consumption in infants and cancer. Although a study of 200,000 people, published in the International Journal of Cancer, found no link between rice consumption and cancer, infants can concentrate more arsenic due to their smaller size.

My sense is if you’re transitioning your child to solid foods, rice cereal at one to two servings a day should be fine. What may be better is to balance rice cereals with other types of cereals, such as barley cereal or oatmeal cereal. Even better than cereals can be foods such as bananas, egg yolks and puréed vegetables.

It may get a little messy, so be prepared.

Dear Doctor: I want to start feeding my baby solid food, but I read rice cereal is contaminated with arsenic. What should I do?

Dear Reader: Your concern is understandable. The inorganic form of arsenic, found throughout nature in both the soil and water, is highly carcinogenic – leading to an increased risk of bladder, skin and lung cancers. Areas with high levels of arsenic in the drinking water, such as Bangladesh, see higher rates of some cancers as a result.

In the United States, arsenic levels in drinking water are tightly regulated, which limits our overall risk from arsenic. That doesn’t mean we’re not exposed, however.

Inorganic arsenic still is prevalent in our environment, and organic arsenic, which is much less toxic, can be found in most plants and animals in small amounts.

Rice poses a particular risk, as it concentrates inorganic arsenic more than other types of foods do. That’s because rice is grown in stagnant water, which leads to conditions of low oxygen and allows arsenic to dissolve more easily into the water.

The rice plant then more readily absorbs the arsenic. In fact, the level of uptake is 10 times that of wheat or barley.

The amount of arsenic in rice depends on the type of rice and where it was grown.
