Barry Schrader My primitive folk art Santa has been given a good home. The recent drawing conducted during the Oak Crest Christmas Tree Walk resulted in 27 people dropping their names in the box.

Daily Chronicle Editor Eric Olson drew a name, and the winner is Nate Harrison, a DeKalb native who is a junior at DeKalb High School.

Nate happened to be at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center that Sunday singing with the DeKalb High School Madrigals and entered his name. It was delivered to the music room at the school.

In the spirit of the holiday season, Nate has decided to share Santa with his 24 fellow singers, and so the piece was delivered to the music room at the school. Nate said the folk art piece “brings joy and smiles to everyone” as it stands in the corner of their rehearsal room.

Once the season has ended, he plans to take it home on Par Five Drive in DeKalb and store it until next year, when he hopes to bring it back to the music room.

I inquired about his activities and family.

He is a tenor and part of the Royal Court in the Madrigals, also singing in the varsity choir and playing clarinet in band. Sports of all sorts take up much of the rest of his free time, as he plays cornerback for the Barbs, runs track and is a member of the swim team, as well.

His father works for ComEd and his mother teaches at Huntley Middle School. He has two younger brothers. Nate said he wants to major in physical therapy in college and is considering Illinois State, Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois.

Of course, I had to put in a plug for my alma mater, NIU, so I told him about the

Search for lost animal generated dozens of comments on Facebook

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The city’s agricultural roots were on display Wednesday as a search for a stray cow captivated social media users and generated a slew of puns.

News of the missing cow circulated at Monday’s Sycamore City Council meeting, but it really took off Wednesday morning when the Sycamore Police Department posted about the runaway bovine on its Facebook page.

“The Sycamore police have received several reports of a loose cow wandering around the southeast part of town,” the post said. “We have been unable to capture the animal. If you, or someone you know, is missing a cow please contact us and provide us your contact information so if we do capture it we know who to call.”

That post was shared more than 1,100 times as of Wednesday evening.

By afternoon, the search was over.

“After a midday ‘steak’ out, the lost cow has been reunited with its owners,” the department posted on Facebook. “Thank you for your help, and your puns!”

More than 170 people chimed in to comment on the initial post, many with puns and cow jokes. Sentiments ranged from humor, to concern for the animal and its owners, to nostalgia for a bygone era.

Mayor Ken Mundy said a loose cow is an unusual sight in Sycamore these days, but that wasn’t always the case.

For many years during the 19th century, some local ordinances on the books permitted cattle to be herded through town from May to November. There was even a poundmaster who collected stray animals in a pound. Animals that weren’t claimed after a certain period of time were auctioned off to pay the poundmaster, Mundy said.

The mayor said he wasn’t surprised that the news spread so quickly or that people had so much fun with it.

“We had some fun,” he said. After a string of bad news, the mayor said it was “comic relief.”

Plans moving along for luxury senior townhomes

SYCAMORE – Brian Grainger is another step closer to building a new senior living community in Sycamore with the City Council’s approval on his preliminary plat.

Grainger, owner of Somerset Farm of Sycamore, has an agreement to buy 8.6 acres at the southeast corner of Mount Hunger Road and Main Street.

He plans to build 12 four-unit luxury townhomes for adults 55 and older on the property, which is across Main Street from Sycamore Middle School.

The council’s unanimous approval Monday of Grainger’s preliminary plat allows him to move onto the next steps in his plan, including buying the property and coming up with a final development agreement.

The council’s decision came after the Plan Commission held a public hearing about the preliminary plat and unanimously voted in favor of it Dec. 12. As part of Grainger’s contract, he must buy the property by the end of the year.

Because the development will border Old Mill Park, Grainger has been working through some of the details of

his plan with Sycamore Park District officials.

City Manager Brian Gregory said the preliminary plat approval and rezoning the property from commercial to multifamily residential are both dependent upon the success of the final development agreement.

“Like anything that we deal with, there is a process that has to be followed,” Gregory said. “We felt it best that the development agreement itself not be completed until the details of that park agreement are known and inserted into it.”

Grainger wants to build homes close

to the nearby park land. He proposed a 10.3-foot setback on the side next to the park, while the legal requirement for the setback is 30 feet.

Another aspect will be an emergency access point that will cross over park property and be accessible from the parking lot east of the property.

However, Gregory said the park district has not indicated a problem with the layout.

“I think the fact that it’s an age-restricted community, they’re hopeful that occupants would be mindful of their plantings and use the paths and connection to the park,” he said.

Cademon plans reopening after crowdfunding campaign

browland@shawmedia.com GENOA – After tax troubles threatened to shutter Cademon Brewing Co. in Genoa, beer-loving community members came up with more than $20,000 to keep the downtown brewery and taproom open.

Owner Andrew Nordman launched an $18,000 crowdfunding campaign after the business lost its liquor license last month because of unpaid taxes. In exchange, Nordman offered supporters a variety of ways to get new releases from brewery and even sold a few seats in the taproom. He said about 75 percent of the funding came from people who wanted perks such as future beer releases.

Some of the more expensive perks included the opportunity to reserve a seat ($750) and to name one of the brewery’s fermenters ($1,500). In addition to family and friends, Nordman said he got a lot of support from people he didn’t know. Of the 160 people who backed the Indiegogo campaign, Nordman said he didn’t personally know about 100 of them.

That support was both heartening and humbling for the entrepreneur, he said.

“We had the community rallying behind us,” Nordman said.

For a few days in the middle of the 15-day campaign, the support seemed to level off around the 50 percent mark.

But a big push Friday put the campaign over the top. The $18,000 fixed goal was reached at 12:02 a.m. Saturday. Donations kept coming after the goal was reached.

“It has been an amazing and truly humbling experience to see folks come and support us in this way. We won’t forget this second chance,” Nordman wrote in a Facebook post.

Tuesday, but Nordman said he hoped to be open by New Year’s Eve. But first, the money has to come in from Indiegogo, be sent to the state and Cademon Brewing Co. will have to secure a liquor license.

Nordman said the tax issue was the result of flaws in the company’s business plan. Nordman, a first-time business owner, said he missed a notice from the state regarding a change in how the busi-

ness was to pay sales tax, since it doesn’t charge it directly, according to the crowdfunding campaign’s website.

“Unfortunately, we had just spent a large chunk of our operating capital filling delicious cans of beer, as well as prepping for our second anniversary beer, annual Imperial Demonic releases, and our New Year’s Eve beer,” Nordman wrote.

“This has left us sitting with lots of beer

we can’t sell, no money to pay the outstanding bill and bills starting to pile up while we’re unable to sell alcohol.”

Going forward, Nordman said he has a plan for dealing with the taxes and making sure it doesn’t happen again.

A special beer – an oatmeal stout with freshly toasted coconut flakes – is in the works for supporters. It’s called Second Wind.

Winter solstice sunrise in Sycamore

LOCAL BRIEF SYCAMORE – Jamrah Middle Eastern Cuisine Restaurant will provide a free meal to anyone in need from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Christmas Day at 2672 DeKalb Ave. The Jamrah Christmas lunch will include a chicken shawarma sandwich, homemade soup, rice, a beverage and baklava.

The lunch is meant to benefit seniors, international students, area homeless and others who may be less fortunate during the holiday season, according to

the restaurant’s news release.

Owner Ammar Mahmood said the meal is intended to make a positive impact on the DeKalb and Sycamore communities.

In the center is a 7 1/2-inch round elaborately carved design that is 1 inch deep. The design looks like some sort of house with a figure on each side surrounded by falling leaves.

The bottom and the border have repeating crescent patterns and the inner rim is fluted.

A: Haddon Sundblum (1899-1976) was an American artist best known for his paintings of Santa Claus that were used in Coca-Cola ads. His depiction of Santa as a jolly, rotund old gentleman influenced the way Santa Claus is pictured today. Sundblom’s first painting for Coca-Cola was used in a 1931 ad. A: These goblets are usually listed online as “Victorian Lady with Parasol.” Avon gave them out as Christmas gifts about 1971-1974. The company was founded in 1886 by David H. McConnell, who started out selling books door-to-door. He began selling perfumes to make more money and founded the California Perfume Company, which became Avon in 1939. The original “Avon lady” was Mrs. Persis Foster Eames Albee of Winchester, New Hampshire. She was hired in 1886, and developed and supervised the home-sales method still used today. A set of

By the 19th century in America, the fresh trees were brought into a church or home and decorated. But it was a problem to keep the tree upright and without water it quickly dried out and lost its needles. In 1876, a man in Philadelphia patented an iron tree stand and by 1919, a cone-shaped tin stand weighted with sand or water was being sold. But the stands were not large enough to hold all the water needed and that is still a problem for stands. The stands had to be heavy to keep the tree from tipping so they were made of cast iron. Many were made with three legs that looked like tree branches. All had large screws that pierced the trunk to hold the tree in place. Collectors search for the iron stands made in unusual shapes, a Santa Claus, village scene or even a group of reindeer. They sell today for $250 to $900. An unusual tree stand made of concrete shaped to look like a Santa Claus head was sold at a Bertoia auction in

monasteries, where, long before sugar, bakers kneaded flour and eggs with honey from local beekeepers. That gave lebkuchen its unique flavor and acted as a preservative.

The dough was claylike and pressed into wooden molds that were delicately carved with pictures that told the stories of Christmas and the saints, like St. Nicholas.

When trade routes opened, spices were added to the dough, making it more like it is today. Lebkuchen is still made around the holidays, and molds and recipes can be found online. Your mold is probably from the 19th century, and if clean, thereno reason why it couldn’t still be used. *** Q: I have a collection of Avon pewter Christmas ornaments, but I’m missing the ornaments for 1998 and 2003. Were any made for these years?

The ASSOCIATED PRESS ROCKFORD – An Illinois judge has suspended a state requirement that health care providers who oppose abortion must give information or referrals to patients seeking the procedure.

Winnebago County Judge Eugene Doherty granted an injunction Tuesday in a lawsuit brought by medical providers who oppose abortion, saying they “raised a fair question as to whether their right to be free from government compelled speech is violated.” The ruling applies to northern Illinois clinics that brought the law-

suit, including Aid for Women, which has centers in Chicago, Cicero and Des Plaines. The injunction stands until the case is decided or there’s a further court order. Doherty has said he anticipates the case would be appealed regardless of how he ruled.

The group of clinics filed the lawsuit against Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the secretary of the Illinois Department of Financial and Profession Regulation in August after a state law was amended in July to include the new requirements. The amended law was slated to take effect on Jan. 1.

The medical providers asked Doherty to prevent the state from pe-

nalizing doctors and medical staff who cite objection to abortion as the reason for not providing such information or referrals.

The group’s attorney, Matt Bowman, commended the judge’s ruling and called it a “victory for free speech and the freedom of conscience.” Bowman has noted that the punishment for not providing information about abortion can result in a fine of $10,000 or revocation of a health care provider’s medical license. He said such punishment “chills our speech.”

Ex-Gov. Blagojevich again appeals prison term

CHICAGO – Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich is asking a U.S. appeals court to nullify his 14-year prison term and order a third sentencing hearing.

Attorneys for the Chicago Democrat filed the 50-page appeal late Tuesday night with the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The filing follows Blagojevich’s resentencing Aug. 9, when trial Judge James Zagel refused to lower the original 14-year sentence.

The 7th Circuit had ordered that August resentencing after tossing five of Blagojevich’s 18 convictions. The 60-year-old’s remaining convictions include trying to trade an appointment to President Barack Obama’s old Senate seat for campaign cash.

The latest appeal argues Zagel should have considered Blagojevich’s good behavior in prison. It cites more than 100 letters from fellow inmates who describe Blagojevich helping them, including as a history tutor.

Although Illinois’ top leaders aren’t meeting to discuss the state budget, members of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s education funding reform commission told the Springfield Bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers they’re optimistic that the group will be able to come up with at least outlines of a new school funding formula.

“We’ve made meaningful progress on an incredibly difficult issue,”Republican state Sen. Jason Barickman said.

Rauner set a Feb. 1 deadline for the group to complete its work when he announced its formation in July.

Barickman said that if reform is going to happen, the group, and ultimately the

Legislature, must come to a consensus on complex issues, such as property taxes and achieving parity among school districts.

The point person for Senate Democrats on school funding issues, Sen. Andy Manar, said he believes the group will be able to at least complete “a set of specific recommendations that could be the framework of legislation.” He’s optimistic the commission can produce a bill before Feb. 1.

Jury finds Texas man guilty in death of grandmother

ST. CHARLES – A jury in suburban Chicago has found a Texas man guilty of first-degree murder in a plot that involved driving across the country to kill his grandmother in order to inherit half her estate.

The jury in Kane County returned its verdict Tuesday against 44-year-old Richard Schmelzer, who lives in the Dallas suburb of Frisco. Prosecutors during his trial said Schmelzer lived an extravagant lifestyle that left him behind on his mortgage and deeply in debt.

They argued Schmelzer in July 2014 drove hundreds of miles to East Dundee to stab 85-year-old Mildred “Dodie” Darrington in her bed.

Schmelzer, the married father of four children, stood to inherit at least $300,000 upon her death.

He faces up to 60 years in prison when he’s sentenced next month.

PALM BEACH, Fla. – President-elect Donald Trump declared Wednesday that the deadly truck attack on a Christmas market in Germany was “an attack on humanity and it’s got to be stopped.” He also suggested he might go forward with his campaign pledge to temporarily ban Muslim immigrants from coming to the U.S. “You know my plans. All along, I’ve been proven to be right, 100 percent correct,” Trump said when asked if the attack in Berlin had caused him to re-evaluate the proposal. “What’s happening is disgraceful.”

Trump proposed the Muslim ban during the Republican primary campaign, prompting criticism from both parties. He shifted his rhetoric during the general election to focus on temporarily halting immigration from an unspecified list of countries with ties to terrorism, although he did not disavow the Muslim ban. A transition spokesman said later Wednesday that Trump’s plans “might upset those with their heads stuck in the politically correct sand.”

Mom faces manslaughter in 2nd baby sleep death WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – A mother charged with methamphetamine possession while

pregnant is accused of the aggravated manslaughter of her 18-day-old boy.

It’s the second baby to die while sleeping in bed with Erin PichePitts. The report on her Tuesday arrest said her 13-day-old daughter died after she fell asleep while breastfeeding in 2009. That death was ruled an accident.

This time, she told deputies she fell asleep while bottle-feeding after her baby woke up crying, and found him unresponsive when she woke up hours later.

5 malnourished children found living in a car

GREENACRES, Fla. – A man and woman are facing child neglect charges after a sheriff’s deputy found five malnourished children living in a car parked outside a Wal-Mart store.

The Palm Beach Post reported Donell Barron and Rikki Hart – both 34 – were arrested Sunday.

An arrest report said the deputy looked inside the car after detecting a strong odor “similar to that of homeless camps.” Baron told the deputy the family lost their home and lived in motels until they ran out of money two months ago.

Baron told the deputy the kids bathed at a nearby park. Authorities said children are underweight, but the 14-year-old boy’s bones “were clearly visible.”

Officials had monitored suspect in Berlin attack

BERLIN – German officials had deemed the Tunisian man being sought in a manhunt across Europe a threat long before a truck plowed into a Christmas market in Berlin – and even kept him under covert surveillance for six months this year before halting the operation.

Now the international manhunt for Anis Amri – considered the prime suspect in Monday’s deadly rampage – is raising questions about how closely German authorities are monitoring the hundreds of known Islamic extremists in the country.

The issue puts new pressure on Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is running for re-election next year. Critics are lambasting her for allowing hundreds of thousands of asylum-seekers to enter the country, allegedly without proper security checks.

Among them was Amri, a convicted criminal in both Tunisia and Italy with little chance of getting asylum who successfully evaded deportation from Germany even as German authorities rejected his asylum application and deemed the 24-year-old a possible jihadi threat.

He is suspected in the attack that left 12 people dead and 48 injured Monday evening in Berlin. Health officials said 12 of the injured had very serious wounds.

After German media published photos of him and a partial name, federal prosecutors issued a public appeal for information along with the promise of a 100,000-euro ($105,000) reward for his arrest.

Within hours it emerged that the man authorities warned could be “violent and armed” had in fact been known to them for months as someone with ties to Islamic extremists who used at least

Authorities had initially focused their investigation on a Pakistani man detained shortly after the attack, but released him a day later for lack of evidence. After finding documents belonging to Amri in the cab of the truck, they issued a notice to other European countries early Wednesday seeking his arrest.

According to Ralf Jaeger, the interior minister of North Rhine-Westphalia state, Amri arrived in Germany in July 2015 as the influx of asylum-seekers was nearing its peak.

Although registered in the west of the country, near the Dutch border, Amri had moved around Germany regularly since February, living mostly in Berlin, said Jaeger.

Within months of his arrival, authorities had added Amri to a growing list of potentially violent Islamic extremists, not all of them asylum-seekers.

“Security agencies ex-

State prosecutors in Berlin even launched an investigation of Amri on March 14 following a tip from federal security agencies, who warned that he might be planning a break-in to finance the purchase of automatic weapons for use in a possible future attack.

Surveillance showed that Amri did deal drugs in a notorious Berlin park and was involved in a bar brawl, but no evidence was found to substantiate the original warning.

The surveillance measures were called off in September, by which time Amri had disappeared from his regular haunts in Berlin, prosecutors said.

Separately, Amri’s asylum application was rejected in July. German authorities prepared to deport him but weren’t able to do so because he didn’t have valid identity papers, Jaeger said. In August they started trying to get him a replacement passport.

“Tunisia at first denied that this person was its citizen, and the papers weren’t issued for a long time,” Jaeger said. “They arrived today.”

RALEIGH, N.C. – Amid deepening acrimony, a supposedly bipartisan deal to kill the North Carolina law known as the “bathroom bill” fell apart Wednesday night, ensuring the likelihood that global corporations and national sports events will continue to stay away from the state.

The law limits protections for LGBT people and was best known for a provision that requires transgender people to use public restrooms corresponding to the gender on their birth certificates. It was passed earlier this year after Charlotte officials approved a sweeping anti-discrimination ordinance.

The repeal compromise touted by both Democratic Gov.-elect Roy Cooper and GOP Gov. Pat McCrory called for Charlotte to do away with its ordinance.

In exchange, lawmakers would undo the LGBT law.

But both sides balked: GOP lawmakers cried foul when Charlotte leaders initially left part of the city’s ordinance in place. And when the Senate bill called for a months-long ban on cities passing similar ordinances, Democrats said Republicans were going back on their promise. Cooper said the moratorium essentially doubled down on discrimination.

“The legislature had a chance to do the right thing for North Carolina, and they failed,” he said. “This was our best chance. It cannot be our last chance.”

The troubles in reaching a resolution exposed the intense distrust within the legislature that has only intensified over the years, especially since Republicans took over control of state government in 2013. Cooper’s victory was greeted last week by Republicans acting in a special session to strip away

several powers.

“This has been a long and ultimately frustrating day,” Senate leader Phil Berger told reporters after the session ended.

He blamed Cooper and Charlotte leaders for sinking the deal. Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Dan Blue criticized McCrory for calling the special session a few days before Christmas when there didn’t seem to be an agreement.

And House Republicans couldn’t seem to figure out what they wanted.

They spent most of the day in closeddoor meetings fighting about whether to approve a repeal bill.

People crowded the House and Senate galleries and in the third-floor rotunda all day, keeping watch on the action, or lack thereof. But the mood was much more docile than the angry demonstrations of last week when more than 50 demonstrators were arrested over two days.

Social conservatives were thrilled with the preservation of HB2. North Carolina Values Coalition executive director Tami Fitzgerald praised lawmakers “who stood up for what is right and represented the will of voters by stopping the move to cower and cave-in to the City of Charlotte and the Human Rights Campaign.”

Conservative groups said HB2 provides privacy and protection for children using restrooms and locker rooms.

Lawmakers have worked “hard to protect our families, and women and children from the risk that might be imposed by these lunatic ordinances that the lunatic left in Charlotte and other places want to enact,” said Republican Sen. Buck Newton, who championed HB2 when it was passed in March and supported it ever since.

The next election is just as important as the previous one Most of us still are suffering from election fatigue after the brutal campaign that was Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton.

To think that there’s another election right around the corner might be enough to send some over the brink.

The good news is, there won’t be near the hype, the drama, the accusations, the calls to “lock her up” or the Twitter wars during the upcoming campaign leading to the consolidated municipal election in April.

In fact, most races in this upcoming election will fly under most voters’ radar. And that’s actually too bad.

Voters won’t be electing the next leader of the free world, but the April 4 election will be just as, if not more, important when it comes to having a direct effect on DeKalb County residents’ lives.

On the ballot will be races for mayor and city council, village president and village board, school board and more.

The county’s two largest cities, DeKalb and Sycamore, will see competitive races not only for mayor, but also for some seats on their city councils.

The competition will be particularly tough in DeKalb, where most of the council seats are sought by two or more candidates, there are three people challenging the incumbent mayor, and nine people are vying for three seats on the School District 428 Board.

In Sycamore, there are three candidates to replace outgoing Mayor Ken Mundy, five candidates seeking the $60,000-a-year position as city clerk, and two people vying for the City Council seat in Sycamore’s 4th Ward, which is the central part of Sycamore, south of State Street. Sycamore-based School District 427 has five candidates for four available school board seats.

High property taxes have been an important issue in local elections, and although much public attention is paid to city budgets, it is the local school districts that account for the largest share of residents’ property tax bills – usually more than 60 percent. School boards, many of which decide to collect the maximum amount of tax dollars they can year in and year out, are responsible for those levies.

Participation has been pathetic in recent municipal elections, despite the impact local government has on taxes. Not only do few people show up to vote, often, some local governments wind up with fewer candidates than vacancies.

We encourage voters to pay close to attention to the upcoming local campaigns. Get informed, and be prepared to vote April 4.

Turkey, Russia get closer together The assassination of Russia’s ambassador to Turkey on Monday might have been expected to derail a fragile detente between the regimes of Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Instead, it has served to underline a budding alliance that could have the effect of excluding the U.S. from the endgame of Syria’s civil war and critically weakening U.S. influence across the Middle East.

That, at least, is Putin’s clear intention.

The brutal assassination of ambassador Andrei Karlov by a Turkish police officer was a tragic sign that Russia may pay a price in blowback for its intervention in Syria. The assassin shouted, “Don’t forget Aleppo,” where indiscriminate Russian bombing of hospitals and civilian housing paved the way for the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad to recapture the eastern half of the city.

For now, however, Putin appears to be reveling in his victory and pressing his political advantage.

On Tuesday, his foreign minister hosted his counterparts from Turkey and Iran for a trilateral meeting that endorsed a road map for peace in Syria called the “Moscow declaration.”

Putin and Erdogan meanwhile quickly agreed not to allow the assassination to harm their relations; pro-government media in both countries instead floated theories that the U.S. was somehow responsible for the killing.

The Syria trilateral meeting resounded with Russian triumphalism about the exclusion of the U.S. “All previous attempts by the United States and its partners to agree on coordinated actions were doomed to failure,” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said after meeting with Turkish and Iranian ministers. “None of them wielded real influence over the situation on the ground.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who led Secretary of State John Kerry through months of fruitless diplomacy, pronounced that “the most efficient and effective format for solving the Syrian crisis is our current trilateral format.”

It’s doubtful whether a Russian-Iranian-Turkish axis can really end the war.

There still are more than 100,000 rebel fighters in northern and southern Syria, and many of them may soon join in an Islamist-led coalition.

But Russia and Turkey could quietly accommodate each oth-

er’s aims: Russia and Iran wish to eliminate alternatives to the Assad regime, while Erdogan wants to prevent Kurds from establishing control over areas of northern Syria near the Turkish border. Both sides might favor a cease-fire in the short term; or they could each undertake military offensives against their respective enemies.

The three parties say they will sponsor their own political negotiation between the regime and some Russian-approved “opposition” figures, bypassing a United Nations process; that would likely lead to a ratification of the Assad regime’s political mandate.

A president concerned with preserving U.S. leadership in the Middle East would seek to counter Putin’s maneuvering and reverse Erdogan’s tilt toward the Kremlin.

Sadly, it seems more likely that Donald Trump will welcome it.

The result could be either the quagmire that President Obama has long predicted – so far wrongly – for Russia in Syria or a peace that will empower a string of anti-U.S. strongmen from Damascus and Tehran to Ankara and Moscow.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Yet many Republicans, Philip Klein reports, are considering moving quickly next year on a bill to “repeal” Obamacare without touching its regulations.

They hope that the Trump administration uses executive power to loosen those regulations subsequently.

But many of the most problematic regulations – such as the ones setting a ratio for the premiums that can be charged for the young compared to the old – are in the law itself, and cannot legitimately be modified that way.

The Republicans are thinking of leaving Obamacare’s regulations in

place because they fear that a bill altering them would die in a filibuster.

They are sure they can use a procedure for avoiding filibusters if they target only the law’s tax and spending provisions.

This course could cause the insurance exchanges, already in trouble, to collapse entirely. That’s because the Republican bill would scrap the individual mandate while keeping Obamacare’s requirement that insurers treat sick and healthy people alike.

The individual mandate exists because Obamacare’s architects understood that this requirement, on its own, gives healthy people a reason not to buy insurance: They can wait until they get sick and buy it.

But the more that healthy people avoid insurance, the higher premiums will have to be – and as they go higher, even more healthy people will stop buying coverage. Insurance markets

can’t work that way.

The Republicans to whom Klein talked are blasé about this possibility.

If millions of people lose their coverage, these Republicans plan to say that the exchanges already were collapsing before they touched the law.

It seems unlikely that the press will go along with this narrative, in part because many health care experts, liberal and conservative, will tell reporters that it’s false.

What Republicans have not faced is that they don’t have the votes to repeal Obamacare. Calling a bill that doesn’t repeal Obamacare’s central provisions “repeal” is no escape from that dilemma.

These Congressional Democratic elders aren’t over the hill

Four years before the next presidential election, Democrats have two formidable would-be challengers to Donald Trump. One is a successful governor and the other a popular politician.

Both have a problem: In 2020, California’s Jerry Brown will be 82 and Joe Biden will be an ex-vice president nearing 78. The U.S. may be graying, with Trump the oldest newly elected president ever, but not that much.

It’s silly, at this distant stage, to speculate about the next election. Predictions are usually wrong.

But Biden and Brown offer instructive examples for their down-and-out party. Other than President Barack Obama, no Democrat offers a more compelling message and record than these two.

I believe Biden would have trounced Trump in November in both the popular vote and Electoral College. (Although I doubt that the vice president, who chose not to run while grieving for his son, Beau, who died of

cancer, would have won the nomination.)

Democrats should listen to him as they debate whether they should double down on their success with young voters, members of minority groups, suburbanites and college-educated professionals, or focus instead on winning over some of the working-class whites who went decisively for Trump. Biden argues that this is a false choice – that Democrats need an economic agenda that appeals to both.

He has a long progressive record on civil rights and women’s issues.

He pushed his boss, President Barack Obama, to support gay marriage.

He’s also passionate about helping struggling workers. During the campaign, he complained that Hillary Clinton and other Democrats failed to appeal to middle- and working-class white voters. Biden knew their votes would be needed to carry places such as Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, a Democratic city that went for Trump.

Yes, Biden was a hapless presidential-primary candidate in 1988 and 2008. His ability to transcend the party’s struggle over whether to be

populist or upscale is important for Democrats. Brown has become one of the best governors. Although California is more liberal than the U.S. as a whole – Clinton carried the state by almost 4.3 million while losing the rest of the country by 1.4 million – his achievements defy conventional labels. The son of a governor and once a Jesuit seminarian, Brown was California’s boy-wonder governor in 1975 when, at age 36, he began his first two-term stint. He’ll reach 80 next year in the final of his second two terms, far more successful than before.

He rescued California from bankruptcy by restraining spending, persuading voters to approve a tax hike on the wealthy and setting aside a rainy-day fund for the next downturn.

A champion of socially progressive causes, he’s a strong environmentalist. He has even warned Trump that California will launch satellites to monitor greenhouse-gas emissions if Republicans end climate-science work by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. But he’s been also defied some greens by supporting fracking, and business is thriving

under his stewardship.

Today’s Jerry Brown is more politically appealing than the 1970s version, having added a sense of humor and abandoned a fondness for the grandiose schemes that inspired the nickname “Governor Moonbeam.”

He still has an inquisitive intellect and a dose of creative cynicism. Having once spent time working with Mother Teresa, he explained her success to me in marketing terms: “Jesuits are into turtlenecks and chardonnay. If you’re into that you ought to be an investment banker.

Mother Theresa knows her niche; she’s into poverty.”

Brown, born to political royalty, and Biden, son of a car salesman, have profoundly different political personas and vantage points. Democrats cannot turn to either one to lead them out of the wilderness in 2020. But these septuagenarians, each with more than four and a half decades in public life, are current and relevant. Democrats should listen to them.

Long before Obamacare, the federal government had been subsidizing health insurance for scores of millions of Americans. The law expanded that subsidization to cover several million more people.

If that’s all it had done, it might have gotten some Republican support: Forty Republicans in the House and seven in the Senate voted to expand the Children’s Health Insurance Program in the first weeks of Obama’s presidency.

But the Obamacare law also, for the first time, made the federal government the chief regulator of health insurance. And these regulations are responsible for nearly all the uproar about the law.

It’s the regulations that caused people to lose their health insurance, contrary to Obama’s if-you-like-it-youcan-keep-it promise. It’s the regulations that have led to high premiums for many plans. It’s the regulations

Inconsistency, hurricane ended NIU’s bowl streak It’s fitting that in a season of bad breaks and close calls, an act of God played a part in keeping the Northern Illinois football team out of a bowl.

After the 31-21 win over Kent State made the Huskies 5-7 in the final week of the season – along with a series of fortunate events elsewhere in the country – they needed either South Alabama or Louisiana-Lafayette to not pick up their sixth win. If either had lost, the Huskies would have snuck through the bowl backdoor with a losing record because of their strong Academic Progress Rate (APR) and because college football has so many bowls that there weren’t enough non-losing teams to field them for the second year in a row.

However, both the Jaguars (6-6) and the Ragin’ Cajuns (6-6) won and the Huskies will spend bowl season at home for the first time since Dan Nicholson was the quarterback in 2007. The streak of consecutive bowl appearances ends at eight.

Flashback to early October: LSU was originally slated to play Florida on Oct. 8 in Gainesville.

Then Mother Nature threw a fit.

Hurricane Matthew crashed into the the area and postponed the important conference game until Nov. 19 – when LSU was originally supposed to play South Alabama and Florida was to beat up on Presbyterian.

With the two big-timers needing to

get the SEC game in, they threw cash at the two smaller schools to go away and play each other. Instead of (most likely) losing to LSU, South Alabama instead got to trounce Presbyterian.

Without that win the Jaguars wouldn’t have gotten to six victories. They also got a special waiver from the NCAA to count the win over Presbyterian (the Jaguars’ second over an FCS school this season) toward their bowl eligibility.

Without South Alabama getting to six wins or receiving that special waiver, Northern Illinois would have gotten the nod to go somewhere.

However, it’s important to remember that if the Huskies got an invite to go somewhere for a bowl, it doesn’t mean they’d accept. Well before the potential opening for the Holiday Bowl popped up, Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier said it wasn’t a slam dunk that they would go to a smaller bowl, considering how depleted the roster had become due to injuries and what the matchup would

be, not to mention the cost.

Instead, the chance to make such a decision fell short, thanks partly to a hurricane and the ending of a rare boycott.

A look at the good and bad of this season, along with lingering questions heading into next season:

The Good • Kenny Golladay

There were times this season in which the Huskies offense was pretty tough to watch. However, fans always knew that they were a play away because the Huskies had Golladay on the outside. Coming out of St. Rita in Chicago without any offers and transferring from North Dakota, Golladay made the most of his two years here.

He became the first Huskie ever with two seasons with 1,000-plus receiving yards and a fan favorite with his one-handed catches. Through the

Local 10-year-old has international attention

ecarifio@shawmedia.com In five years, Carlos Lopez has gone from slamming balls across the indoor field at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA to participating in a camp in Barcelona.

He’s still only 10.

The fifth-grader at Malta Elementary School returned from FCB Escola, the official soccer clinic of FC Barcelona. He will also compete in a tournament hosted by the club in April in Barcelona.

“I’m kind of nervous,” said Lopez of playing in the tournament.

His mother, Isela Lopez, said her son is known as Flaco to his teammates and opponents.

She said that her son’s love of soccer started about age 3½, when he watched his sister, Janesa, play in a rec league game.

“The next morning, he said, ‘Can you buy me the shin guards?’ and you’re like ‘OK,’ ” Isela Lopez said. “So I took him to the store and got him all the equipment, and then every single day he played outside.”

That’s when his father, Ernesto Lopez, noticed that his boy could play.

“I would just sit outside and watch him, and one day he was like, ‘Dad, do you know soccer?’ ” Ernesto Lopez said. “And it’s like, I have the knowledge but I don’t really play it. So I

Praising the players for never giving up isn’t the first page of the Big Book of Coaches Cliches, but it’s up there. However, the Huskies were 1-6 after a brutal triple-overtime loss to Central Michigan. A bad season got worse, but credit the Huskies for keeping their slim bowl hopes alive by going 4-1 down the stretch, with the only loss coming against a good Toledo squad. Granted, three of the wins came against the worst teams in the poor MAC East – Buffalo, Bowling Green and Kent State.

started teaching him some moves, and then he started out of nowhere copying them perfect. So I said to do it again.

And he did another. So I started watching him and playing with him every day. That’s the special part. He was so small, but he had such great skill.”

So when he was old enough, his parents enrolled him in the rec league at the Y. His mother said the other kids were scared, and that led to him moving way ahead of his age level.

“He would kick it so hard, he’d make it into the other net, and the kids would literally just move out of the way,” Isela Lopez said. “So they said we should move him up, so we stitched him into the first- and second-grade league. But the same thing happened. So he’s 5 ½, 6 years old at this time and he ended up playing in the age-10 league.

“He had to learn within one day the exact positions,” she said. “Since then he’s always been two to three years ahead.”

He played a short while in DeKalb’s AYSO league, then for the Northern Illinois Football Club travelling team. He now plays on a pair of travelling teams, Shadow Premier out of Belvidere – on which he’s on both the under-12 and under-13 teams – and the Spanish-language Chivitas out of Rockford.

He attended a local camp in June, where the instructors for the FC Barcelona camp noticed him. Not only was he invited to the camp that was held However, the most damning loss of all came at home against FCS foe Western Illinois. The Huskies trailed by three touchdowns midway through the third quarter before Anthony Maddie took over and led a rally that fell five points short in the 28-23 loss. If Maddie was the one who took over as the starter after Drew Hare went down for the season in Week 2, it’s a good bet the Huskies would have beaten the Leathernecks.

When he went down with a concession, freshman Daniel Santacaterina started and went 2-0 in two road wins, an overtime victory at Eastern Michigan and a comfortable win at Kent State, but also looked shaky at times.

Neither Graham nor Santacaterina showed without a doubt that they should be in the driver’s seat for the starting spot. Whether it’s one of them, one of the stable of quarterbacks who redshirted this year or a junior college transfer, the Huskies will have plenty of questions at the quarterback spot this offseason.

Burning questions heading into 2017 • Will Rod Carey be the coach?

Social media was an online version of a mob with pitchforks and torches as the Huskies piled up losses in the beginning of the season and the hashtag #FireRodCarey took on a life of its own. Carey is signed through 2018, so if Northern Illinois decides to cut ties with him, they’d have to pay him a buyout. However, a strong finish at the the end of the season will most likely keep Carey’s job safe for 2017.

With so many playmakers graduating, however, it could be tough for Carey to get the Huskies back to the 10-win teams of years’ past.

As a sophomore last season, Lurry set college football on fire with nine interceptions and became a sensation overnight. He came into 2016 with high expectations – both from inside and outside the locker room – and he struggled mightily early. NIU coach Rod Carey admitted that Lurry may have been trying to do too much during the first part of the season.

However, he settled down a little bit, made three interceptions, but seemed as if he was always battling an injury.

LAKE FOREST – The Bears officially shut down 2014 first-round pick Kyle Fuller for the season, keeping him on injured reserve, John Fox announced Wednesday.

“We just evaluate what we see,” Fox said. “I think desire for guys to be out there, it’s hard to measure. I would say just evaluating where he was or is right now as compared to the players we have out there, didn’t feel it was the best move for us.”

Fuller’s role in this decision came into question based on Vic Fangio’s comments from Tuesday. Was the cornerback who was once thought to be the franchise’s future at the position not champing at the bit to return to the field?

“That was definitely not true,” Fuller said when asked about the defensive

coordinator’s comments. “I think I’ve been communicating with the team and just letting them know how much I want to be back, showing them I’m working and trying to get back. It really just came down to not quite being ready to play. I think that’s all it was.”

Fuller said he “definitely didn’t anticipate it getting to this level” after arthroscopic knee surgery in August.

“But that’s out of my control,” he said. “I’ve got to keep working to get back.”

Fuller is under contract for 2017 and the team has a club option for 2018 it needs to decide on by May. Fuller said he wants to be back in Chicago next season and expects to remain with the team, although his future is unclear under a regime that didn’t draft him.

“It’s disappointing because you want to be out there,” he said. “I guess I’ve got to listen to my body. I’m not quite there yet. And just go from there.”

ST. LOUIS – Malcolm Hill scored 21 points and Maverick Morgan had a double-double to lead Illinois to a 75-66 win over Missouri on Wednesday.

Morgan hit 7 of 8 free throws and finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jalen Coleman-Lands scored 12.

Hot start leads Kaneland: The Knights got off to a huge start and beat Streator, 54-40, at the Ottawa tournament.

The Knights outscored Streator 19-2 in the first quarter. With the victory, Kaneland improved to 10-1 on the season. All but two of its wins this year have come by 14 points or more.

Notre Dame hires Wake Forest’s Elko as defensive coordinator

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame has hired Mike Elko as its defensive coordinator, hoping he can turn around a unit that struggled at the beginning of last season and was blamed in part for a down year for the Fighting Irish.

Elko has spent the past three seasons as the defensive coordinator at Wake Forest after two years at Bowling Green. The former Ivy League safety at Penn had the Demon Deacons’ defense ranked in the top 20 of the Football Bowl Subdivision in fumbles recovered (third), turnovers forced (10th), sacks (12th), defensive TDs (17th), red zone defense (17th) and scoring defense (20th).

Brian VanGorder was fired as defensive coordinator on Sept. 25.

A certain Bulls coach could be forgiven for feeling more than a tinge of jealousy after witnessing that sort of fourth-quarter performance. But he wasn’t talking about it.

With Wall screaming into the paint to score and set up teammates, and with the Wizards’ tight rotations stifling the Bulls’ flow as early as the second quarter, Washington quickly narrowed the Bulls’ 11-point first-quarter lead. When Wall lofted an alley-oop to Marcin Gortat (14 points, 11 rebounds) for the final score of the first half, the Wizards had whittled the edge to 56-55.

Fred Hoiberg doesn’t talk about it.

Not exactly, anyway.

The Bulls’ current funky bunch of vets and kids still may be figuring out exactly who they are, but their coach absolutely knows what they aren’t.

That is, they’re short on snipers, sharpshooters and long-distance bombers. Having entered Wednesday’s home game against the Wizards shooting a league-worst 30.9 percent from 3-point range, this is Chicago’s Gang That Can’t (Consistently) Shoot Straight.

But Hoiberg, a congenial sort, doesn’t really go there. Only talks around it, stressing the stuff that poor-shooting teams can’t take for granted. He highlights the importance of pace and effort and “the little things” – coach-speak that, for these Bulls, happens to be chock full of fundamental truths.

So he urges his players to sell out.

Hopes to coax focus and discipline from them. Demands that they grind on defense and run like bejeesus.

And against Washington, they heard Hoiberg’s message – for a quarter. But after that, only the Wizards seemed to be listening.

Fueled initially by a kinetic urgency that led to plenty of shots at the rim and clean looks – but also some sloppy passing and ball-handling – the Bulls gradually bogged down in the halfcourt and were undone by their usual bugaboos. Struggling to stay in front of John Wall in transition and failing to knock down enough shots from distance, the Bulls watched an early lead evaporate as the streaking Wizards beat them, 107-97, essentially at Hoiberg’s game.

“Obviously we struggled the last two quarters offensively,” Hoiberg said.

“The more we missed, the more we tried to go get it. Guys were supposed to be getting blocks, and we kept trying

Shining a light on Morton Arboretum

That mission takes on a new meaning during its “Illumination: Tree Lights” at the Morton Arboretum” display, now in its fourth year. From now until Jan. 2, visitors can see 50 acres of the arboretum’s trees bathed in a variety of colors.

“This is what we do at the Morton Arboretum,” said Anamari Dorgan, director of education. “We are all about trees and connecting people with them.

But during the wintertime, the trees lose their leaves after a beautiful glorious fall, and people go into dormancy like the trees and you’re not paying attention to that thing that’s still alive.

So we wanted to shine a light on that and really introduce visitors to trees in a very different way, figuratively and literally.”

The popular display has attracted more than 350,000 visitors throughout the years, including those from out of state.

This year’s display will feature two new experiences. As part of Treemagination, projections of abstract designs will splash across the arboretum’s hemlock trees.

“We have 150 upright posts that have been installed in the open space between our hedgerows,” Dorgan said.

“And the white lights reflect off them in this brilliant manner. And it’s all synchronized to an original score.”

As part of the display, visitors also will have the chance to “hug” a tree.

“It’s a favorite of mine personally because you can embrace them, and they light up around you,” Dorgan said. “Because the show is all about connecting people emotionally to trees, what better way to do that and to get to know a tree than to throw your arms around it and hug it? It’s a very real and tangible experience connecting individuals to actual trees. It’s a fan favorite.”

IVT names cast for musical ‘Don’t Hug Me’ DAILY CHRONICLE Indian Valley Theatre has named the cast for its next production: “Don’t Hug Me,” a musical directed by Matthew Johnson and Sharon Pagoria.

The cast includes Jen Ketchum as Clara Johnson and Kari Frantzen as Bernice Lundstrom, both from Sandwich; Brad Shortridge of Genoa as Gunner Johnson; Darren Whaley of Newark as Aarvid Gisselsen; and Brian Pross as Kanute Gunderson and William Wille as the Radio Announcer, both of Yorkville.

The crew team includes Christine Johnson, stage manager; Deb Matthews, music director; CarLeigh Plant, choreographer; Patrick Stinson and Matt Frantzen, lights and sound; Tony Pagori, sets; Meredith Eskoff, box office manager; and the Wille family, house managers.

Her fiancé, Kanute Gunderson, wants her to stay home. It’s a battle of wills, and when a fast-talking salesman, Aarvid Gisselsen, promises to bring romance into their lives through the “magic” of karaoke, all heck breaks loose.

The show features the songs, “I’m a Walleye Woman in a Crappie Town,” “My Smorgasbord of Love,” “Upside Down in My Pickup Truck,” and “I Wanna Go to the Mall of America.”

Pick out a local race to train for and set an in-family competition with personal goals and rewards.

If you market these changes as something that’s fun for your children and for yourself, you’re far more likely to create healthy habits that will last for life.

Dear Doctors: My teenagers refuse to eat vegetables unless they’re fried. Are they doomed to obesity and ill health?

Dear Reader: We wish we could reassure you and say it’ll all be OK, but studies long have been clear on the matter. What your children eat now will shape their health for years – and maybe decades – to come.

Poor eating habits have caused a spike in childhood obesity in the past few decades.

Today, more than 17 percent of kids ages 2 to 17 qualify as obese. That’s double what it was 20 years ago.

Being overweight has put young people at increased risk of all kinds of health problems and led to a sharp increase in the diagnosis of conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated blood cholesterol, fatty liver and even asthma and sleep disorders.

But before you confront your children with a list of “don’ts,” which teens naturally are primed to resist, be aware the newest study on youth nutrition has some great news. It arms you with the information you need to right the nutritional course while encouraging your teens in a positive way.

Here’s the gist: Young people who ate fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains, and who steered clear of sugar, red meat and processed foods, gained significantly less weight as they entered young adulthood.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Minnesota, followed the eating habits of 2,500 adolescents from the time they were 15 until they turned 25.

Researchers found by eating well at age 15, young people developed the habit of good nutrition, and it carried on into their 20s and beyond.

The takeaway? You can guide your children to a more healthful adulthood by helping them establish good eating habits while they are in their teens.

I’m worried because a few months ago she was called into her counselor’s office for “roasting.” She was asked to roast two specific girls, and the information got back to them and back to the counselor. Our daughter is not allowed to date, and although she has friends who started dating at 10 or 11, I don’t allow her to go to their homes. I do allow them to come to our home instead.

I just need to know how to handle this situation before it gets out of control. I have tried talking calmly and patiently with her, but it doesn’t work. She believes she knows it all and I know nothing. – Unsure In New Jersey Dear Unsure: Girls who mock others and say cruel things are less “nice” than you would like to believe. It’s a form of bullying. You need to nip this in the bud. A way to handle your daughter’s misbehavior would be to institute consequences for getting called to the counselor’s office and/or lying to you and your husband. By consequences, I mean the removal of privileges – cellphone, television, internet or having friends over – for a period of time.

Also, if your daughter is coming home with hickeys, she might have too much unsupervised time on her hands. So if you haven’t already, involve her in supervised activities such as church youth groups, sports and special-interest clubs if her school offers them.

If she’s going to a friend’s house, be sure an adult will be there.

Parenting is a full-time job. In time your daughter will mature and this, too, will pass.

But for now she needs watching.

Dear Abby: My best friend – who is 19 – was concerned she might be pregnant because her period was late. She told me she and her husband (yes, she’s married) have been having unprotected sex. Lo and behold, she took multiple tests and she is pregnant.
