Toys for Tots fills community need POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS This was the second year I was able to be a volunteer “shopper” at the Toys for Tots toy distribution at The Salvation Army in DeKalb, and once again it was an enjoyable experience.

Kathi Hogshead Davis and many volunteer helpers, including several retired Marines, work hard each year to make the Marine Corps Reserve’s annual toy drive and distribution a success. The generosity of families and companies in the area also is essential, and this year there was plenty of support.

It’s a good thing, too, because there clearly is a need in our community.

I helped five people through The Salvation Army building at 830 Grove St. in DeKalb in almost two hours, and each time I saw one person out the door, there was another waiting at the head of the line. There were people with as many as five children and people with as few as one. They were white, black and Latina.

All of them were moms, and if there’s one thing you can talk to a mom about, it’s her kids.

Some talked about how advanced their child was, others about how big they’d grown or how much they’d changed since becoming teenagers.

All of them carefully scanned the toys, books, puzzles and clothing that covered folding tables, while I took their selections and put them into a bag. All of the people who I helped said they wanted to apply the personal touch of wrapping their own gifts, even though gift wrappers were available.

The truth is, I do it for myself as much as for anyone else. I enjoy feeling like I’m doing something to help others, and it’s not every day that you get to meet and connect with total strangers. For me, volunteering at the toy distribution is a great reminder of how much I have in common with other people, who like me are raising children and trying to get by in this life.

I’m aware of how fortunate I am to be the one holding the bag, rather than the one taking it home to my children. I’m also aware that there’s no way of knowing whether I always will be so fortunate. But while it lasts, it’s nice to have the opportunity to do something small to help others, and get to meet and talk with them, too.

It’s a great thing for the community that so many people are willing to put in the time and donate to the Toys for Tots program. I’ve seen firsthand the good it does.

DALLAS – A Newsweek reporter who has epilepsy said he had a seizure after being sent a message on Twitter intended to trigger such an episode and is seeking information from the social media company to identify the person responsible for the tweet.

The image in question – which included a strobe effect and the words, “You deserve a seizure for your posts” – was apparently sent in response to Kurt Eichenwald’s outspoken criticism of President-elect Donald Trump. Eichenwald, who has a home in Texas, said in court documents that the image triggered a seizure.

or documents regarding the person who sent the image. Eichenwald wrote that “Twitter agreed to an expedited order,” meaning the company won’t challenge the request for information. Eichenwald is seeking the information for a potential lawsuit, likely against the person who sent the tweet since court documents say he doesn’t plan to sue Twitter.

A Twitter representative said via email that the company does not comment on individual accounts or investigations. Guidelines for law enforcement listed on the company’s website include a requirement for a court order or subpoena before it releases user information.

The deposition request, filed Monday, said that Twitter suspended the account of @jew_goldstein “upon learning of the assault.” The sender had identified him or herself with the alias Ari Goldstein.

Volunteers hand out gifts from Toys for Tots donations at Salvation Army

DeKALB – John Carlson said wrapping presents for Toys for Tots helped him and other volunteers realize how fortunate they are to be in a position to help while so many are in need.

“It’s always better to be on this side of the table than to be on that side of the table, and the sad thing is, a lot of people don’t want to be there, but the circumstances sometimes dictate where you end up,” he said.

Carlson and other members of Mayfield Congregational Church in Sycamore have volunteered to wrap Toys for Tots gifts at the DeKalb Salvation Army for the past six years.

“It’s a good teaching tool for the young kids,” he said. “It teaches them a little humility, and it’s just nice to give back. Not everybody is as fortunate as everybody else.”

The effort to distribute gifts to the 1,588 children registered for DeKalb County Toys for Tots began Tuesday and will continue from 8:30 a.m. to noon today.

The program is led nationally by the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, with help locally from the DeKalb County Marines Detachment 847.

Kathi Hogshead Davis, the DeKalb County Toys for Tots coordinator, said more than 650 families had registered to pick up gifts for 1,588 children.

Last year, 967 families registered for 2,090 children.

Davis said parents who missed the deadline are able to come in for late registration between 11 a.m. and noon today, and she expects this will account for between 200 to 400 more children.

Lisa Holub of DeKalb picked up gifts for her 15-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter.

“It’s very helpful this year, especially because I’m going through breast cancer treatment,” Holub said.

“It’s definitely an expensive thing to go through.”

She said she got flying drone toys for her son and a paint set and outfit for her daughter.

“They definitely appreciate the toys and the clothes,” Holub said, “though I think I appreciate the clothes more.”

Davis said the number of gifts donated was up from last year, but she still had to go out before distribution to buy almost $2,000 worth of additional toys using money donations.

“I always wait until we get them all in so I know where we’re lacking, and it’s usually [ages] 9 to 11 and 12plus, especially girls,” she said.

Davis said each family could receive a puzzle, two board games, a stuffed animal, three stocking stuffers per child, one book per child

and two to four toys per child. Children ages 5 and younger get four toys; ages 6 to 8 get three toys, and ages 9 to 11 and 12-plus get two toys.

“One of the main reasons we do this is to give hope to children,” Davis said. “A lot of families, they’ve got to spend their money on food or on necessities, the heat in this weather, that kind of thing.”

Rhonda Brown, social services director for the DeKalb Salvation Army, said this is her first Christmas with the organization, and she has been amazed to see the community’s generosity.

“People seem to be very grateful,” Brown said. “If it’s their first time, you can kind of tell because they didn’t realize how much we actually

have and that they’re actually getting more than one little toy – they’re getting a couple toys and some games and other things.”

Jennifer Ballard of Cortland, a volunteer “shopper” who helped parents pick out toys Tuesday, said she tries to understand what children’s interests are so that she can select toys that will best suit their personalities.

Ballard said she began volunteering with Toys for Tots four years ago with the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity at Northern Illinois University, and she keeps coming back to help children and the community.

“I believe every child deserves a toy for Christmas,” she said. “Even if it’s something small.”

Police: More victims of child sex abuse found Energym owner: No background check was performed for former gymnastics instructor

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Police said they have identified three more children who were sexually abused by Joseph R. Hannon, a former gymnastics instructor whose employer says was hired without a criminal background check.

In a letter sent to some parents this week, Energym owner Andy Morreale said the club “typically checked the backgrounds of all of our noncompetitive adult instructors.”

But it didn’t check Hannon, 21, of Sycamore, who has been charged with criminal sexual abuse of a child and predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Hannon had been arrested several times in DeKalb County and was on felony probation in an October 2013 drug case when he was hired.

“With regards to Hannon, he had taken classes here in his youth and worked part time beginning in September 2015 as a student instructor before getting hired full time in August 2016,” Morreale wrote. “After his arrest, we checked our records and learned that a background check had not been performed on him.

He was the only adult instructor whose background was not checked against criminal court records.”

Hannon has been in custody since Dec. 7, when he was arrested on charges that he sexually abused a 9-year-old girl during an open gym session Nov. 25 at Energym. The incident was captured on

video, police said.

Days later, more charges were added in connection with three incidents with another 9-year-old girl during a tumbling course Hannon taught over the summer at Energym.

Hannon could face as many as 60 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge, predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. The list of charges against him is likely to grow.

On Monday, SycaJoseph R. more Police Chief Glenn Hannon Theriault told the City Council that three more victims had been identified.

“We’re concerned because we think there are a lot more [victims], but in terms of a prosecutable case, we’re at five right now and continuing to interview children that have been there,” Theriault said. “The building owner, gym owner, has been working with us and cooperating with us. We hope to bring that case to a close within the coming week, week and a half.”

When Hannon first was arrested, prosecutors said he may have inappropriately touched as many as 30 children at Energym’s facilities in Sycamore and Genoa. In addition to employing Hannon, Morreale also rented an apartment to him near the gym.

Going forward, Morreale wrote in the letter that Energym would require background checks.

“Beginning immediately, all of our adult instructors are required to obtain certification from USA Gymnastics, which includes criminal background checks conducted by the accredited National Center for Safety Initiatives, which was formed in partnership with the National Council of Youth Sports,” he wrote. “Most of our instructors are already certified by USA Gymnastics.”

Court records show Hannon pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a controlled substance in connection with an October 2013 incident in which he sold the prescription drug Xanax within 1,000 feet of a senior housing complex in DeKalb.

While on probation, he tested positive for marijuana in May 2015, and he failed to submit two other drug tests, according to court records. He also was arrested for petty offenses including retail theft in March 2015 and charges of resisting a police officer and possession of marijuana in August 2015.

The guide includes information about hiring and screening practices along with sample policies and a sample application that asks job seekers about past criminal convictions and pending criminal charges.

1st phase of D-428 debt restructuring to save $1M

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The first part of a threestep school bond debt restructuring is set to save $1 million in taxpayer interest costs, financial advisers told the DeKalb School District 428 Board during Tuesday’s meeting.

The savings come from the sale of almost $10 million in school bonds from 2008 that were taken out to buy the new DeKalb High School, Cortland Elementary School and other building improvements. A total of $108 million had been borrowed to accomplish this.

Andrea Gorla, assistant superintendent in business and finance, said that the district was looking at debt restructuring plans since 2009 because the bond debt could not be structured

Of the 21 companies that were contacted as potential buyers, only two responded. Gorla said this was based on the timing of the sale, since most banks were closing their books for the year, and companies were not interested in doing business with Illinois because of the state’s fiscal issues.

The next step is to restructure about $14 million of the bond debt sometime between September and December 2017.

The rest of the bond then will be refunded in December 2019. These actions would stretch the bond debt another six years, from 2030 to 2036.

While debt payments on a $150,000 home would be reduced between $173 and $433 a year through 2030, the stretched bonds would result in continued debt payments through 2036, resulting in a total of $404 saved over time for taxpayers.

“We’re trying to make bond payments level and more manageable in order to pay off our debt without extending it too far,” Gorla said.

Sycamore attorney faces bankruptcy fraud charges Lawyer: ‘I maintain my innocence’ in case DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – A federal grand jury indicted a troubled Sycamore attorney – whose practice included bankruptcy law – on charges of bankruptcy fraud Tuesday.

Kevin “K.O.” Johnson, 50, of Sycamore faces four counts of bankruptcy fraud and four counts of making a false oath in a bankruptcy case, concealing or withholding information in the books or records of the financial affairs of the debtor and concealing assets, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

The indictment stems from Johnson’s personal bankruptcy filing on Dec. 31, 2011. It alleges that Johnson

hid information about almost $1.8 million he was owed from current and former clients, including billing and fee agreements and a bank account where he deposited payments from clients.

The indictment also alleges that Johnson told clients to pay him directly instead of the bankruptcy trustee in his case.

“I maintain my innocence,” Johnson said in a text message to the Daily Chronicle. “The prosecutor chose the path of ignoring facts, hence the joke about indicting a ham sandwich. This is all part of what’s been happening for years.”

Sol Wachtler, the former chief judge of New York, was famously quoted as saying a grand jury would indict a ham sandwich. The quote was repeated in Tom Wolfe’s 1987 novel, “The Bonfire of the Vanities.”

Each charge in this case carries a maximum potential penalty of up to five years in prison, or one to five years of probation.

SHABBONA – A Shabbona man was charged Tuesday with 11 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child for repeatedly having sexual contact with a boy who was younger than 13, police said.

Corey L. Keith, 27, of the 200 block of South Shabbona Road, Shabbona, was charged in connection with crimes that investigators believe happened at a home in Shabbona beginning in 2014 until January or February 2016.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office began investigating Keith in November

after being notified by a concerned citizen.

Investigators aren’t aware of any other victims, Sheriff Roger Scott said.

On Tuesday, investigators met with Keith.

He later was arrested and booked into the DeKalb County Jail.

He is being held at the jail pending a bond hearing.

Born: February 7, 1942; in Belvidere, IL Died: December 15, 2016; in Genoa, IL Gary A. Lane, 74, of Genoa died Thursday, December 15, 2016, at his home.

He was born February 7, 1942, in Belvidere to Clifford and Goldie (Rosekrans) Lane. He married Sandy (Anderson) Lane on March 16, 1970. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Vietnam era. Gary spent his career teaching and coaching within the Hinkley-Big Rock school system. He was an active member of the VFW in Genoa.

Survivors include his children, Rick (Diane) Lane and Kelli (Chris) Mann; and three grandchildren, Winter Lane, and Katie and Ryan Mann.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Sandy in 2007.

A memorial gathering will be on Thursday, Dec. 22 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Slater-Butala Funeral Home in Genoa. Burial will be private.

Candidates seek spot on DeKalb, Sycamore ballots

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – One of the deepest city office races for the April election is a five-way battle for Sycamore’s city clerk, a full-time, $60,000-a-year position.

Lisa Hepker, Cortney Cox, Mary Kalk, Shaney Herrmann and Christiene Drake all have filed nominating petitions, and the first four also will be in a lottery drawing Tuesday that will determine ballot placement. Hepker, Cox, Kalk and Herrmann all filed at the earliest possible time.

In contrast, the part-time position of DeKalb city clerk, which has an annual salary of $5,000, only had one filer: Susanna Herrmann.

Mayoral races in DeKalb and Sycamore both will feature multiple contenders.

In DeKalb, incumbent Mayor John Rey faces a challenge from local businessman Michael Embrey, community leader Jerry Smith and DeKalb County Board member Misty Haji-Sheikh.

Since Rey, Embrey and Smith all filed their petitions at the same time, DeKalb’s lottery drawing will be next Wednesday to determine name order on the ballot.

CHICAGO – In this deadly year of gun violence in Chicago, the tragic became the routine: Teens carried the caskets of friends down church steps. Sobbing mothers huddled at candlelight vigils, praying for an end to the shootings. Police unfurled more yellow tape to cordon off another murder scene.

The city recorded its first fatal gunshot victim just a few hours into 2016.

Month after month, the numbers mounted. More than 100 homicides in January and February. Around Labor Day, another milestone: 500 deaths. By mid-December, Chicago had recorded some 740 homicides.

Most were on the South and West sides. Most victims were young black men. But Chicago’s epidemic of gun violence – more than 3,400 shootings and about 4,200 victims in all – scars a much wider circle.

Illinois license plate renewal notices to continue for now

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office will continue mailing out license plate renewal notices for now, even if Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Legislature’s Democratic leaders don’t reach a new budget deal.

The office plans to maintain the mailed notices next year, Dave Drucker, a spokesman for Secretary of State Jesse White’s office, told the Springfield Bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers. But he said the office won’t be able to do so indefinitely without additional funding from a budget for the remainder of the state’s fiscal year, which runs through June.

The stopgap spending plan that’s funding most state agencies’ operations is set to expire Dec. 31.

Hatch prayed with Rev. Marshall Tolliver’s mother near her house. Later, he Hatch wrote a eulogy for her son. In the months ahead, he’d do the same for several other young gunshot victims.

Hatch, pastor of the New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, says this year’s bloodshed has left him reeling.

“I’ve been at it 30 years and I don’t know that I can continue at this pace emotionally,” he says. “The only way I can really deal with it is see myself as an outsider. This is not my way of life.

It’s not my family’s way of life. It’s not the way of life of a lot of people that I know who are close to me. But I live in the neighborhood. ... I have to have some sense of detachment in order to serve.”

In the pressure cooker world of pediatric intensive care, Dr. Catherine Humikowski has seen the grievous damage bullets do when they rip into young brains and bodies.

The list is long, the wounds harrowing: A depressed, gaunt-faced 15-yearold, paralyzed from the shoulders down, tubes snaking through his stomach and windpipe. A 6-year-old girl shot in the stomach. Humikowski is medical director of the pediatric ICU at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital. She loves the job, she says, but it’s physically exhausting and has changed what she does outside of work.

She avoids reading the news, talks with a therapist and limits herself to a single dinner drink to avoid “self-medication.” This year, Chicago’s violence also helped prompt a life-changing decision: She’s leaving when her contract expires next summer.

New, former comptrollers have battle of words

SPRINGFIELD – A battle of words has broken out between Illinois’ former and current comptrollers after Democrat Susana Mendoza said her new offices felt “looted” and Republican predecessor Leslie Munger threatened a lawsuit.

Mendoza tells WLS-AM radio’s “Connected to Chicago” show in an interview that airs Sunday that when she took over for Munger this month, furniture had been removed, documents were missing and keys didn’t match locks. Mendoza defeated Munger in the November general election.

“There’s not a single piece of paper or paper clip left in any of the offices that have been vacated,” Mendoza said. “It did kind of feel like the place was looted.”

Ex-Ogle County sheriff pleads guilty in theft case

OREGON – A former northern Illinois county sheriff has pleaded guilty to charges he used thousands of dollars of government money for personal items.

The (Dixon) Telegraph reported that a Carroll County judge sentenced 55-yearold former Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn on Monday to four years of probation and ordered him to immediately pay more than $10,000 in restitution to the county treasurer. Harn’s guilty plea to two counts of felony theft was part of a plea agreement.

Judge Val Gunnarsson told Harn that he “grossly violated” the public trust. Harn also must pay more than $2,300 in court costs and perform 384 hours of public service.

As a congressman, Danny Davis can debate the need for gun control from a public policy perspective.

But as a grandfather, he can’t make sense of the death of his 15-year-old grandson, Javon Wilson, who was shot last month at his South Side home in a fight over clothes and Danny Davis gym shoes. A 16-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl have been charged with murder.

Javon, he says, had been warned not to be out on the streets at night. “Of course, here he was at home,” Davis says. “The streets kind of came to him.”

At Javon’s funeral, Davis mourned his grandson, a basketball fanatic, a lover of blues and rap, a high school student just coming into his own. But the congressman looked beyond his family’s tragedy.

“Somehow with all the technology that we have, with all the know-how ... we have not had the will to stop the flow of guns through inner-city communities,” he told mourners. “You have to ask yourself, ‘How does a 15-year-old get a gun? Who will give it to him?’ ”

911 call played at trial of mom accused of murder

ROCKFORD – The eerie 911 call made by a woman accused of stabbing her 8-year-old son to death has been played at her bench trial.

The Rockford Register Star reported that Jody Kossow acknowledged killing her son during the call before also mentioning Satan. She’s pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the September 2013 slaying and waived her right to a jury trial.

Kossow didn’t show emotion Tuesday as the call was played during the trial’s first day. Kossow’s attorney said that psychiatric evaluations will show that Kossow was criminally insane when the child was killed.

However, prosecutors said Kossow understood what she was doing when she got a knife from the kitchen and used it to stab him.

FLINT, Mich. – A criminal investigation of Flint’s lead-contaminated water turned to former key officials at City Hall on Tuesday as Michigan’s attorney general announced charges against four people accused of keeping residents on a contaminated system that caused the crisis.

Darnell Earley and Gerald Ambrose separately were state-appointed emergency managers in Flint in 2014-15 when the city was using the Flint River as a source of drinking water. Ambrose also served earlier as a financial adviser to the troubled town.

They were charged with four crimes, including conspiracy and misconduct in office. Howard Croft, Flint’s former public works director, and Daugherty Johnson, the former utilities director, were charged with conspiracy and false pretenses.

Trump family drops access offered for charity donations

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump’s children may see his move to the White House as a way to raise money for their favorite causes.

Two recent fundraising pitches featuring the incoming first family were meant to benefit charities, but they also raised questions among ethics experts that the Trumps might be inappropriately selling access.

Last week, Eric Trump tried auctioning a coffee date with his sister Ivanka to raise money for a children’s hospital. Now, Eric and Donald Trump Jr. are part of a venture that initially offered a private reception with their father during inauguration weekend in exchange for $1 million donations that would go to conservation charities. Some of those contributors could later go hunting or fishing with one or both of the sons, the invitation promised.

These events are dissolving as quickly as they become public, suggesting the family is learning on the fly what’s acceptable.

Trump aides say the Trump family has been focused on resolving the perception of conflicts when it comes to Trump’s business; how to handle their charitable endeavors has been a secondary concern. But in light of recent events, the Trump team is looking more quickly for solutions, said a Trump transition official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to share internal discussions.

Hope Hicks, a Trump spokeswoman, said the hunting and fishing events reflected “initial concepts that have not been approved or pursued by the Trump family.” She added that the sons “are not involved in any capacity. Additionally, the president-elect is not aware of the event or the details pertaining to it.”

The two previous presidents, Barack Obama and George W. Bush, expressly forbade immediate family members from such fundraising activities to avoid the appearance of selling access.

“We kept it simple. We did not allow the first family to be auctioned off, which is what is happening here,” said Norman Eisen, who served as White House chief ethics counselor as Obama took office in 2009.

Richard Painter, who filled a similar role for Bush, said the White House “strongly discouraged” the president, his family and top aides from fundraising for charities, and avoided altogether charity fundraising that came with any access to those people.

Both said that while there’s nothing explicitly illegal about the charity fundraising, it diverges from the best practices of previous White House administrations.

In an invitation that began circulating last week when the entertainment site TMZ posted it, Eric and Donald Trump Jr. were listed as honorary co-chairmen for a group seeking up to $1 million donations for a Jan. 21 inauguration event dubbed “Opening Day.”

NEW YORK – The FBI was trying to get a look at thousands of Hillary Clinton’s emails on disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner’s computer partly to see whether anyone had hacked in to steal classified information, according to court documents unsealed Tuesday.

Investigating possible hacking appeared to be a secondary rationale for the email search, which FBI Director James Comey launched in the waning days of the presidential election.

When the FBI asked a magistrate judge in New York to issue a search warrant for Weiner’s computer on Oct. 30, an agent spent pages describing concerns it might contain evidence Clinton had mishandled classified information.

The warrant application, made public Tuesday, was filed two days after Comey informed Congress investigators had discovered email correspondence that could be pertinent to his recently closed probe of Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state.

In the document, the agent wrote that thousands of emails between Clinton and top aide Huma Abedin had been

unauthorized users or transferred to any other unauthorized systems.”

A magistrate judge signed off on the search warrant that day.

The FBI hasn’t publicly revealed whether it found any evidence of a hacking attempt.

During the presidential campaign, hackers accessed the email accounts of Democratic Party officials and Clinton’s campaign chief, John Podesta, and leaked them to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. U.S. intelligence officials have linked the hacking to Russia’s intelligence agency and its military intelligence division, although Moscow has denied those accusations.

After getting court consent to delve into the newly discovered emails on Weiner’s computer, agents spent several days analyzing them before Comey announced they contained no new evidence of wrongdoing by Clinton.

The surprise restart of the email probe, however, upended the presidential race just days before the election.

Clinton supporters have blamed the investigation for her loss to Republican Donald Trump.

Weiner’s laptop was initially seized by agents investigating his online relationship with a teenage girl in North Carolina. That inquiry is ongoing.

Christmas gift from Capitol?

The sentiment “Peace on Earth, good will toward all” doesn’t seem to apply to Illinois politics, does it? But in this season of Christmas, we believe it should.

Illinois state government needs a successor agreement to the half-year stopgap budget that took effect July 1 and will run out on Dec. 31.

While the stopgap budget funds K-12 schools through June 30, 2017, other major areas will soon be left out in the cold.

That is, if Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and leaders of the Democratic majority in the Legislature, House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, don’t come to an agreement before the first of the year.

People who face domestic violence, have disabilities, need transportation to medical appointments, or simply need an education have come to rely on the state helping to pay for services, which will be threatened anew if a reliable source of funding isn’t forthcoming in two weeks.

We get it that Rauner and Madigan, who also is the state Democratic Party chairman, are bitter rivals. The governor, who took office in January 2015 with the slogan “Shake up Springfield; bring back Illinois,” might compromise and support an income tax increase –something we oppose – but only if the Democratic-controlled Legislature approves some of his “turnaround agenda” reforms.

Longtime leaders Madigan and Cullerton, who have been party to many legislative deals in the past, don’t want to agree to any of Rauner’s proposals.

Thus, there’s been no annual budget since July 1, 2015.

And now, the 12.8 million residents of Illinois must wait apprehensively for another deal, makeshift or otherwise, that will help state government to run better than it has.

If the spirit of Christmas won’t warm the cold hearts of our state leaders, what will?

We hope they finally see that treating budget victims with Scrooge-like indifference during protracted political standoffs does the public an incredible injustice.

A compromise budget agreement would go a long way toward warming hearts and boosting spirits across our state.

Governor, Mr. Speaker, and Mr. Senate President: In this season of hope and joy, it’s not an unreasonable request that you do your jobs and produce a new budget before the stopgap runs out.

Unless, of course, you believe that peace on earth and good will toward all don’t apply in your line of work.

Cop cameras again show worth Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett understands the value of having cameras on his city’s police officers.

The Milwaukee County district attorney last week charged a patrol officer with first-degree reckless homicide in the fatal shooting of Sylville Smith. Video captured by cameras on the patrolman’s and his partner’s uniforms was key to the investigation.

“If this case had occurred 10 years ago, or 15 years ago, we would not have that evidence,” Barrett told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Similarly, if the case had occurred in Madison – not decades ago, but today – video evidence from cop cameras wouldn’t exist, and the officer almost certainly would not be charged. That’s because, unlike Milwaukee and so many other cities, Madison continues to resist even a small test of cameras on police uniforms.

Surveys suggest the public

overwhelmingly supports cameras on officers because they’ve been shown to improve the behavior of police and the public.

The Madison City Council should learn from Milwaukee’s experience. Milwaukee has been equipping all of its patrol officers with body-worn cameras since last year. And when Officer Dominique Heaggan-Brown, 24, shot Smith, 23, as Smith ran from a traffic stop, uniform cameras showed Smith was carrying a gun, turned toward the officer and raised the weapon.

But after Milwaukee District Attorney John Chisholm watched footage from the encounter, he saw something else. The officer’s first shot hit Smith’s arm, and the gun Smith was carrying went over a fence, according to the criminal complaint. The officer’s second and fatal shot hit Smith in the chest while Smith was unarmed.

The officer said he fired a second time because he thought

Smith was reaching for his waistband and possibly another weapon. But according to the criminal complaint: “A review of the body camera footage shows that at no time after the shooting did Heaggan-Brown or any other officer search Smith for a second firearm.

In fact, when Smith demonstrably reaches for his waistband after being shot the second time, Heaggan-Brown does not discharge his weapon, but moves Smith’s hand away with his own hand.”

That doesn’t mean Heaggan-Brown is guilty of a crime.

The officer had to think quickly under a lot of stress.

Ultimately, a jury may decide the officer’s fate. And if it does, it will be able to watch for itself – along with the public – what happened.

That’s about the strongest evidence possible. And cameras on police officers made it possible.

CAPITOL EFFECTS Rich Miller closely to Blagojevich. There was no Pritzker response to that one.

Behind the scenes, Pritzker allies fumed at the absurdly early attack and warned that Rauner was “poking the bear” and would live to regret it. But Gov. Rauner’s people mocked Pritzker for being “thin skinned” and warned that last week’s oppo dump was “a very small appetizer.”

The aim here appears to be to either keep Pritzker out of the race or take him out in the Democratic primary before he can present a clear danger in the fall campaign with his estimated $3.4 billion net worth. Gov. Rauner has tons of his own money, of course, but he also relies on a couple of super-wealthy friends for additional tens of millions. Pritzker can conceivably fund a race all by himself, although he has recently been meeting with top labor leaders and other party honchos as well.

So we can probably expect more of this stuff from Rauner’s state party in the coming days as Pritzker makes his final decision on whether to run.

Neither side has yet started a proper

opposition research book on the potential Democratic candidate. Last week’s attacks were mainly based on basic Google and Lexis Nexis searches.

But if they’re going to try to snuff him out in the Democratic primary, Pritzker’s online comments about liberal Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders could eventually come into focus, I’m told. Sanders ended up doing pretty darned well in Illinois’ Democratic primary, so alienating a huge chunk of likely Democratic primary voters would be a smart play.

Pritzker, a loyal Hillary Clinton supporter, referred to the insurgent presidential candidate on Twitter by his initials “BS” and tweeted that Sanders was “outrageously McCarthyite.”

Pritzker also retweeted an article about how Sanders “said lack of sex and resenting your mom could cause cancer,” pointed to favorable comments about Sanders by the National Rifle Association, referred to the losing Democratic candidate’s campaign manager as “delusional” and occasionally engaged Sanders’ supporters on the social media platform. And I didn’t even look at the guy’s Facebook account.

Some Democrats pointed out last week that the Republicans’ Blagojevich-based attacks failed miserably in the just-completed U.S. Senate race against

Tammy Duckworth. But the Rauner folks say the issue kept Sen. Mark Kirk in the hunt during the summer, before he was overwhelmed with Duckworth cash in the fall. Indeed, Kirk was polling essentially even with Duckworth throughout the summer.

The Republicans also used the Blagojevich issue in several legislative races, including against state Rep. John Bradley (D-Marion), who once had a public fight with Blagojevich after the then-governor referred to him as a “wall flower” and a pawn of Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan. That well-covered spat didn’t matter to the GOP, of course.

“For anyone who has a real association with Blago – and I think our argument yesterday is that JB’s history was more than fleeting – it is a potent hit,” was how one Rauner guy put it the day after the robocalls were launched.

The question now becomes whether Pritzker is prepared to expose his children to this sort of nonstop mudslinging for almost two solid years. We will probably know more after the holidays.

But don’t expect any lull in the negativity while we wait.

Russians weren’t that good; Obama was that bad

The Washington Post Just how incompetent is the Obama administration? It turns out they knew the Russians were behind the Democratic National Committee and attempted Republican National Committee hackings, but according to NBC News, decided not to take any decisive action because they were assuming a Hillary Clinton victory, and therefore felt President Clinton could deal with the Russians when she took office.

At his end-of-year news conference Friday, President Barack Obama admitted to his own weakness with his statement that his response to the DNC hacking was to tell Russian President Vladimir Putin to “cut it out,” when he saw Putin in China in September, fully a year after FBI agents tried to contact the DNC about the hacking attempts.

What?! I hope Obama added a determined foot stomp and a “by golly” to his pitiful admonition to Putin. I wonder whether Putin laughed in Obama’s face, or waited until he left the room.

I think history will show the Putin abuse of Obama reached a crescendo at that moment. How is it possible that Obama’s team decided a flimsy warning to Putin would be enough of a response? Maybe Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said it best when he tweeted, “There would be no strong Putin without a weak Obama.”

The Democrats want to play the victim, blame Donald Trump and declare Trump the beneficiary of the Russians’ interference in the 2016 campaign, but in fact, it was their own leadership that dropped the ball and gave the Russians the opening they needed. And Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s silence on this was deafening.

Where was she when her agents

were trying to get the DNC’s attention?

Probably somewhere carrying out her audition for a job in a Clinton administration.

Anyway, the tale of incompetence doesn’t stop there. In a Keystone Cops-worthy episode revealed in no less than the New York Times, it turns out the FBI repeatedly called the DNC beginning in September 2015 to warn them about hacking attempts, but the Democratic staffer the FBI agent reached wouldn’t return the agent’s calls because “he wasn’t certain the caller was a real FBI agent and not an imposter” and because the DNC had “nothing to report.”

Not to mention, another Democratic staffer made the world’s most inexplicable “typo” and called a phishing email a “legitimate email” instead of an “illegitimate” one, opening the path for a hacker to gain access to all of John Podesta’s emails. Oops.

It’s unbelievable. And as troubling as it is that Obama and the Democrats allowed the Russians to interfere in the election and engage in cyberwarfare without any ramifications, we shouldn’t be surprised. After all, it is the Obama administration that has capitulated to Iran at every turn and stood by as Syrian government forces, facilitated by the Russians, slaughtered hundreds of thousands in Syria.

Now more than ever, it is clear it is time for an urgent change in our foreign policy. Obama and his team cannot leave office soon enough.

“This will be the most expensive race of our lifetime,” a Republican friend assured me last week about the apparently already begun 2018 gubernatorial campaign.

If Democratic billionaire JB Pritzker pulls the trigger and decides to run, we can expect that significant campaign spending could begin as early as next month – on both sides. And if last week is any indication, this is gonna be one nasty contest.

The Illinois Republican Party began running robocalls on Dec. 13 to elected Democrats, along with their party’s contributors and activists. The calls sought to tie Pritzker to imprisoned former Gov. Rod Blagojevich by using an FBI tape of Blagojevich spit-balling with an aide about getting Pritzker to endow a nonprofit organization that the governor could run after leaving office.

The Pritzker camp responded to the robocalls with a statement criticizing Gov. Bruce Rauner for not passing a budget for two years and allowing “human services to be gutted.” The statement from Pritzker’s spokesperson also claimed the governor should have better things to do with his time than to “dredge up the crazy rantings of Rod Blagojevich.” That led to a quickie but rather large opposition research dump that sought to tie Pritzker even more

HINCKLEY – Even with the Genoa-Kingston girls basketball team connected on its 3-pointers in the first quarter, Hinckley-Big Rock wouldn’t go away.

The Royals threatened the Cogs’ winning streak before Genoa-Kingston finally pulled away in the final minutes of the game in a 52-45 victory on Tuesday night in Hinckley.

The Cogs (12-2) have now won nine in a row, but the Royals (4-9) held a 15-13 lead after the first quarter despite Genoa-Kingston going 3 for 7 from beyond the arc in the period.

With Genoa-Kingston off for winter break, Cogs coach Kyle Henkel said they struggled with energy against the Royals – particularly in the first half.

“I think we thought because school is on break that we were on break for basketball, as well,” Henkel said. “We did enough to get the win, we played a better second half, but we definitely did not come ready to compete at the level we should be competing at this time of year.”

The Cogs were once again led by star senior guard Julia Galauner, who scored a game-high 24 points on 9 for 16 shooting – including 4 of 6 from three – and had five rebounds. Senior guard Jesi Nay added 17 points on 7 for 16 shooting and made three 3-pointers on the night.

Hinckley-Big Rock senior guard Annie Kossman scored a team-high 18 points, senior guard Emily Southern had 11 of her 13 points in the first half and senior post Elena Halverson had a game-high 14 rebounds in the loss.

After trailing 13-11 late in the first quarter, the Royals closed out the period with the lead after a jumper by Kossman and a layup by senior guard Meghan Menzel.

“They hit three (3-pointers) in that first quarter and we were sitting there between the quarters and the girls were like, ‘We’re in this,’ ” Hinckley-Big Rock coach Doug Brewington said. “We were winning. It was like, ‘We can play with this team.’ It lightened the mood and that if we played like that, we can play with anybody.”

The game had a constant rhythm with few fouls called on the night. There were only two called in the first half combined – with the first foul of the contest coming with 3:32 left in the second

quarter – and the teams only shot 10 total free throws.

“It’s always a tough battle as a coach at the end of the game to make sure everybody is rested,” Brewington said.

“All of a sudden you have your starting five on the floor for seven minutes and you’re in trouble at that point. It’s one thing we struggled with tonight – fourth quarter of a tight game and you stick with your rotations ... and ultimately, we got a little tired on defense and were a step slow and that may have been our downfall tonight.”

The Royals are off until after Christmas and will play next against St. Francis at the Lisle Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27, while the Cogs are done in 2016 and host Sycamore on Jan. 3.

Bears coach John Fox would not acknowledge any decision on Fuller, who has been on injured reserve but practicing for the past three weeks.

Wednesday afternoon is the deadline for the Bears to activate the 2014 firstround pick for the final two games of the season.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Fuller is medically cleared from his knee injury, but not yet ready to play.

“Any time a guy’s hurt, there’s three stages to getting back to the field,” Fangio said. “One is you’ve got to get medical clearance. Two, the player’s got to say he’s ready to go and feels confident and he’s champing at the bit to go play. NEW YORK – The Oakland Raiders lead the NFL with seven players selected for the Pro Bowl.

Quarterback Derek Carr, wide receiver Amari Cooper, center Rodney Hudson, defensive end Khalil Mack, safety Reggie Nelson, guard Kelechi Osemele and tackle Donald Penn were picked from the Raiders, who are in first place in the AFC West going into Week 16.

The Raiders had three players selected from their offensive line, a big reason the team has finally ended its long playoff drought.

“It means a lot. It’s a great honor to be recognized for what you do,” Hudson said. “It’s very humbling. I give a lot of thanks to our teammates because you can’t do any of it by yourself.”

were selected, most among NFC teams.

Outside linebacker Vic Beasley, kicker Matt Bryant, running back Devonta Freeman, wide receiver Julio Jones, center Alex Mack and quarterback Matt Ryan were chosen from the NFC South leaders.

No Bears were selected.

Despite missing the first four games of the season because of his “Deflategate” suspension, New England quarterback Tom Brady was picked for the 12th time in his career. Cleveland tackle Joe Thomas and Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald were selected for the 10th time.

Twenty-six of the 32 teams had at least one player picked. Twenty players were chosen for the first time, including three rookies: Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott from Dallas, and Kansas City’s Tyreek Hill.

Among the notable omissions was Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The first-place Lions, who lead the NFC North at 9-5, did not have a single representative.

Carolina’s Cam Newton, last season’s NFL MVP, was not picked, either.

Other star quarterbacks left out were New Orleans’ Drew Brees and Indianapolis’ Andrew Luck.

After the Raiders and Falcons, the Cowboys, Steelers and Titans were next with five players selected each.

In addition to Prescott and Elliott, offensive linemen Travis Frederick, Zack Martin and Tyron Smith were picked from Dallas.

For the Steelers, running back Le’Veon Bell, wide receiver Antonio Brown, guard David DeCastro, center Maurkice Pouncey and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger were selected. Roethlisberger, Pouncey and Brown were all chosen for the fifth time.

For the surprising Titans, tied with Houston for first place in the AFC

South, it’s their most players picked for the Pro Bowl since they had six in 2008.

Running back DeMarco Murray leads the group. He has 1,224 yards rushing, second in the NFL behind Elliott.

Left tackle Taylor Lewan earned his first Pro Bowl honor in his third season, while linebacker Brian Orakpo earned his fourth Pro Bowl trip overall and first since signing with Tennessee in March 2015. Tight end Delanie Walker and defensive lineman Jurrell Casey were both elected to start for the first time in their second career appearance.

The Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday, Jan. 29, in Orlando, Florida. The game will return to the NFC vs. AFC format after three years. Former stars Jerome Bettis, Tony Gonzalez, Ray Lewis and Charles Woodson will serve as “Legends Captains.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS ATLANTA – Longtime TNT broadcaster Craig Sager was remembered for his love of family, sports and colorful attire at a memorial service Tuesday that produced laughs and tears.

Among those attending the service were San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and members of Sager’s Turner Sports TV family, including Ernie Johnson and Reggie Miller.

The Rev. Randy Mickler, former senior pastor of Mount Bethel United Methodist Church in Marietta, Georgia, led the service.

Mickler noted he decided against wearing his normal black robe and instead wore a purple shirt and colorful jacket he said would have made Sager “extremely proud and pleased.”

The 65-year-old Sager died Thursday after a two-year fight with acute myeloid leukemia.

Grammy winner Yolanda Adams sang two songs at the service. Johnson said Sager “planted sequoias” by inspiring others with his determined battle against cancer.

That’s one of our better spread lineups when we get those guys out there together.”

Wade might even have more help coming, as Michael Carter-Williams (left wrist) is eyeing a return by the end of the week, adding perimeter defense to go along with Wade, Mirotic, McDermott and, right now, Cristiano Felicio in the middle.

But will that be enough, especially when it comes to how inconsistent Mirotic and McDermott can be? More importantly, is there even a move for the Bulls to make to strengthen that young bench?

Likely not.

Mirotic can help a team, but expiring contracts haven’t been the gold standard

in years, and the hope that the free agentto-be can turn it around outweighs adding an unknown. Former first-round pick Bobby Portis is an option because he’s in and out of the rotation, but again the return on a player who is still developing hardly would change the balance of power in the conference.

That’s what the Bulls have to weigh the next six weeks. Is developing a young bench standing in the way of being a playoff team?

“You’re talking to 29 teams and seeing who is talking about different things,” Hoiberg said. “Sometimes things pop up with rosters. Sometimes they don’t.

“We’ll continue to keep those guys ready, and hopefully they’ll help us win some games and produce.”

The dialogue is wide open between Bulls head coach and front office these days.

A brand-new frontier compared with the cold war that went on a few years ago.

Then again, as a player, a coach, and even when Fred Hoiberg was an assistant general manager with the Minnesota Timberwolves, open dialogue was never listed as one of his weaknesses.

“It goes both ways,” Hoiberg said of the lines of communication when it comes to trying to improve the roster.

“You get together and talk about your roster. Ask questions from us and also from the front office. There is a constant dialogue. You’re always looking to do what’s best for your organization.”

That might have to come into play with this group if the Bulls want to take advantage of a mediocre Eastern Conference.

There’s the Cleveland Cavaliers at the top, Toronto shadowing them, and then everybody else. The win over the Detroit Pistons on Monday was just another reminder of how average life in the East really is.

The problem for the inconsistent Bulls is that the way they are constructed, mediocre might be their ceiling this season.

The bench just isn’t reliable right now.

On nights when Nikola Mirotic and Doug McDermott can be outside threats like they were in the Detroit win, all is well. Mirotic scored 13 points and was a plus-15 in the plus/minus category after a two-game benching. McDermott added 13 points and was a plus-17 in plus/minus.

“We’re a different team when everybody is making shots,” Jimmy Butler said of his bench. “When they’ve got to guard everyone out there on the floor, there’s no match-up you can key in on.

I’m glad to see [McDermott and Mirotic] doing what they do best, put the ball in the basket. We need them to keep shooting, taking and making shots with confidence.”

Hoiberg obviously had a similar observation coming out of that win, especially when he uses starter Dwyane Wade with that second unit to cause even more potential match-up problems.

PRAGUE – Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was injured by a knife-wielding attacker Tuesday at her home and had to undergo surgery on her left hand.

An operation that took 3 hours, 45 minutes revealed that the left-handed player’s injuries were “serious,” but “there’s no reason to think she wouldn’t be able to play tennis,” her spokesman Karel Tejkal said.

Petra Kvitova will, however, Kvitova miss the Australian Open and a significant part of the season as she won’t be able to fully train for at least three months, Tejkal said, adding that Kvitova suffered damaged to the tendons in her left hand, along with injuries to all five fingers and two nerves.

Corey Crawford was back on the ice with his teammates Tuesday morning for the first time since undergoing an appendectomy Dec. 3 in Philadelphia.

He looked like his old self, lunging for shots, popping back to his feet after hitting the ice for a save, and snatching pucks out of the air with his usual panache.

Crawford likely will reclaim his net Friday, against the Colorado Avalanche.

But he might have to share it a little more going forward.

Scott Darling’s outstanding play in Crawford’s absence might have changed the Blackhawks’ goaltending dynamic. Ever since Crawford established himself as the Hawks’ No. 1 goalie in the latter half of the 2010-11 season, he’s been a workhorse. Basically, the only way Crawford sits is if the Hawks are playing on back-to-back nights, or if he’s injured.

And Crawford is still the Hawks’ unquestioned No. 1. But entering Tuesday’s game against Ottawa, Darling had gone 6-2-1 in Crawford’s absence, including the current 6-0-1 stretch. He has a .938 save percentage in that stretch, and has given up one goal or no goals in five of his past seven starts.

“It will get some discussion, knowing that we’ll keep an eye on Corey,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said.

“Going into the season, you anticipate [Darling] playing all the back-to-backs, and getting more based on performance, and how [Crawford] is handling it, as well. That will [factor] into the decision.

Certainly, he’s enhanced how we view the opportunity – him getting a little bit more, and making it tough when we’re making decisions on who’s in net.”

Crawford has played either 57, 58 or 59 games in his five full-length seasons

in the NHL (he played 30 of 48 during the lockout-shortened 2013 campaign).

Had it not been for injuries, he likely would have played closer to 65 each season. As does any goalie, he wants to play as often as possible. But he could only rave about how well Darling has played in his absence.

“Unbelievable,” Crawford said.

“He’s been great for us ever since he came here. He’s just looking for a chance. He’s been great. He stole a few games there, some great performances. Made some big saves in the other games, too, at key points in the game.

You can’t ask for more than that.”

Crawford’s play could dictate just how much of a timeshare it becomes.

Before the surgery, he was playing brilliantly, with a 12-6-2 record, a .927 save percentage and a 2.27 goals-against average. He had won his past three starts, making 30, 38 and 34 saves in the process. He’s hoping it won’t take long to find that groove again.

“It’d be nice to get the feeling back right away,” Crawford said. “That’s the AP file photo plan. Crawford said he felt fortunate that his appendix didn’t actually burst. After nearly two weeks off the ice, Tuesday was Crawford’s fifth straight day practicing, but his first with his teammates.

“I feel good, it’s nice to see them again,” he said. “That road trip felt like an eternity.”

By the time you read this, I’ll be in Paris, where every pastry shop, grand or small, will give pride of place to its Buches de Noel, the sweet of the season.

The French await the appearance of yule log cakes with the same gleeful anticipation of kids awaiting Santa.

Weeks before the confections show up in the shops, you find them previewed in glossy magazines and in every newspaper. There are traditional logs, the kind made to look like tree stumps with meringue mushrooms and chocolate leaves; logs in a pastry chef’s signature flavors; and fantastical logs created for particular shops by artists and fashion designers.

And, unlike in the States, where the yule log appears only at Christmas, the cake is served through the New Year in France, after which it is retired to make room for the galettes des rois, the king cakes that celebrate Epiphany.

But that’s another story.

Whether you call the cake a bûche or a yule log, at its heart it’s the simple cake we know as a jellyroll: a thin sponge-cake spread with jelly or another filling and then rolled up. Mine is just that, a very simple sponge-cake covered with cookie spread (or peanut butter or Nutella) and jam (apple or pumpkin butter), rolled up, “frosted” with whipped cream and then sprinkled with colored sugar, chocolate bits, cookie crumbs or whatever crunchies you like. Sure, you can add the mushrooms and leaves, but the cake is lovely without embellishment. Easy, too. In fact, I think of this as the easiest Buche de Noel ever.

hand, knowing it’s impossible not to knock some air out of the meringue, and blend the ingredients together as best as you can. It’s better to have a few patches of egg white than to deflate the batter, so work quickly and carefully, and don’t aim for perfection.

The log is better when the filling has had time to meld with the cake.

For the frosting: Pour the heavy cream into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a balloon-whisk attachment (or in a bowl with a handheld electric mixer); beat on medium speed until the cream just starts to thicken.

Little by little, add the confectioners’ sugar followed by the vanilla extract.

You want to beat the cream until it is thick and holds its shape. Use a flexible spatula to fold the sour cream into the stiffly beaten whipped cream.

Use a serrated knife to cut off the uneven ends of the cake. (Reserve for a baker’s treat.)

Use an offset spatula or a kitchen knife to generously cover the cake with the whipped cream mixture; you’ll use all of it. If you’re not serving the cake immediately, return it to the refrigerator. (The frosted cake can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 12 hours.)

When you’re ready to serve the cake, top it with sanding sugar, sprinkles or other decorations of your choice.

A yule log that’s cool

Brisket delicious at Hanukkah, all winter

Whether or not you celebrate the Jewish holidays, a good brisket recipe is a nice thing to have in your winter repertoire.

Brisket is a tough and fairly inexpensive cut of meat that gets amazingly tender after some quality time in the oven, and it requires little attention or care while it cooks. That’s a nice characteristic in a piece of beef.

Make sure to serve this with egg noodles or potatoes to soak up all the sauce. If you want a more subtle mushroom flavor, mix in some sliced button or cremini mushrooms with the wild mushrooms.

Beef Brisket with Wild Mushrooms Serves 6 Start to finish: 4 hours

2 heads garlic, cloves separated but unpeeled 1/2 ounce dried porcini mushrooms 2/3 cup boiling water 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 2½- to 3-pound piece beef brisket Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to

mince two of the garlic cloves and set aside.

Place the porcini mushrooms in a small bowl and add the boiling water. Let the mushrooms soak for 20 minutes. Remove AP photo them, squeeze out any extra water back into the bowl, and then strain the soaking liquid through a fine mesh strainer into a large bowl. Chop the soaked mushrooms, and set the mushrooms and the strained soaking liquid aside.

Meanwhile, heat a large, deep ovenproof pan or stockpot with a lid over medium high heat. Add the oil. Season the brisket on both sides with salt and pepper. Sear the brisket on both sides for about 4 minutes a side, until browned. Transfer the brisket to a large plate.

Return the pan with the oil to medium heat.

Add the onions, season with salt and pepper, and sauté for 5 minutes until softened and lightly browned. Add the wine and stir, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom, taste until the wine is reduced by half. Add the 1 red onion, halved and sliced beef broth, the chopped soaked mushrooms, 1 cup dry red wine the strained mushroom soaking liquid, and 1½ cups beef broth the thyme to the pot. Tuck the brisket back 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves into the pot; the meat will be about halfway 2 tablespoons unsalted butter submerged. Tuck the remaining garlic cloves 1 pound sliced wild mushrooms, any sort in their skins around the meat into the liquid.

Meanwhile, heat the butter in a very large skillet over medium-high heat until melted.

Add the wild mushrooms and reserved, minced garlic, season with salt and pepper, and sauté until the mushrooms have turned nicely brown, and any liquid that was released has been evaporated, about 8 minutes. Sprinkle in the balsamic vinegar and stir to release any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Skim and discard any fat that has accumulated on the braising liquid. Stir the sautéed mushrooms into the pot.

When the meat has finished resting, cut it into slices as thin or thick as you like, across the grain. Transfer the slices neatly back to the pot, and nestle them into the sauce and mushrooms. Serve hot. Alternately, you may place the meat on a deep serving platter with sides, and ladle the sauce with the whole garlic cloves and mushrooms over the top.

Sprinkle over the parsley or arugula.

Mammogram advice continues to evolve

mammogram is of little benefit.

If you’re a woman who has a mother or a sister with breast cancer, or if you have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation that increases breast cancer risk, then a yearly mammogram after the age of 40 is a good idea. If you have a combination of risk factors – such as having had your first baby after the age of 30, having later-onset menopause or earlier-onset menstruation – then a mammogram likely is a good idea.

However, if you’re at average risk of breast cancer and between the ages of 40 and 49, there is only a small statistical benefit in having a mammogram. If you are between the ages of 50 and 69, the benefit of a mammogram may overcome risk. At that age, you should get a mammogram every two years.

If you’re older than 70, keep in mind breast cancer rates increase up to the age of 80, so the screening could have a benefit.

But that benefit must be weighed against the likelihood of dying from something else. Here again, the recommendation is for a mammogram every two years, but you should discuss your individual needs with your doctor.

Breast cancer screening still is evolving, with newer 3-D types of mammograms, breast MRIs and the possibility of biochemical markers to detect breast cancer. We’ll need studies of these technologies to assess their effectiveness at detecting breast cancer.

The recommendations may change yet again.

Dear Doctor: Do I really need a yearly mammogram?

Dear Reader: This might be hard to accept, but if you’re a woman at low to average risk of breast cancer, you probably don’t need a yearly mammogram.

That’s not to say we shouldn’t give mammograms their due. Studies have found a decreased death rate from breast cancer among women who have had mammograms compared with those who didn’t.

Now let’s look at just how much benefit mammograms offer. The public health advocacy group the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force calculated if 10,000 women between the ages of 39 and 49 had regular mammograms for 10 years, it would prevent three breast cancer deaths. For the same number of women between the ages of 50 and 59, there would be eight fewer breast cancer deaths. And for women between 60 and 69, there would be 21 fewer breast cancer deaths.

In short, the overall death rates were not significantly different between those women who had mammograms and those who didn’t. This especially has been shown in studies in Canada and Sweden that compared the impact of annual mammograms with yearly breast exams from a health professional. In a 22-year Canadian study of 89,000 women, no difference in death rate was seen among women who had regular mammograms compared with those who had yearly breast exams with a health professional. This may point more to the importance of getting a yearly breast exam than the benefit of getting a mammogram.

Mammograms also have downsides.

A primary one is they have many false positives, leading to more imaging, breast biopsies and significant anxiety for patients.

Another is many breast cancers, such as ductal carcinoma in situ, would never be of clinical significance, so finding them on a

Whether or not your father is dying is beside the point. I think on some level you know you have to treat him with more compassion, or you wouldn’t have written to me.
