news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – DeKalb County administrator Gary Hanson said it will take a miracle to turn a State Street house into a sober living facility.

On Monday, Hanson suspended further remodeling work on the project, which has been beset by delays and cost overruns, for 90 days.

“Short of some type of funding miracle, I anticipate having to recommend to the County Board that this project be vacated and that an alternative plan be developed for this property,” Hanson said in a news release Monday afternoon.

Hanson said the project could be saved by funding from faith-based organizations, service groups or philanthropy.

In May 2015, the county bought the home at 491 E. State St. in Sycamore for $145,000. The plan was to convert it into a sober living home for up to seven men. Both furnaces failed last winter. Because the home was empty, those failures led water pipes inside to freeze and then burst, causing extensive water damage. While looking into how much those repairs would cost, other problems, including the lead-based water main,

Plano woman faces drug, gun charges

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A Plano woman who was heralded as a local hero in 2015 faces drug and gun charges after being arrested Saturday near Sandwich.

Heather C. Adamcyk, 28, of the 3200 block of Veronica Street, Plano, was charged with armed violence, possession of 4 grams of cocaine, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, obstruction of identification and possession of drug paraphernalia.

If convicted of the most serious Heather C. charge, armed violence, she could Adamcyk face six to 30 years in prison.

A DeKalb County sheriff’s deputy stopped the vehicle Adamcyk was driving for not having insurance after a registration check about 4 p.m. Friday near the intersection of East Sandwich Road and Wagner Road, according to a police synopsis included in court documents.

Adamcyk first gave the deputy a false name and birth date. When asked whose car she was driving, she was unable to answer without help

were discovered.

The latest round of problems was estimated to push the cost of the project “another $40,000 above available funding” and “there are no guarantees that the problems will end there,” according to the news release.

Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert, who runs the drug-court program and has been a driving force behind the project, said she was disappointed by the project shutdown.

“This is one of those programs that can truly make a difference in people’s lives,” she said in a statement included in the county’s news release.

“The people I am talking about are residents of DeKalb County; they are our friends, our neighbors and our family members. This will eliminate an important resource to the courts that would have helped a lot of people.”

She said that in the long run, the project would have saved the county money.

County Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski Jr. has asked the county’s Law and Justice Committee to identify options for the sober living program and the home that the county bought.

The release didn’t include how much money the county has spent on the project to date.

A Sandwich police dog flagged the vehicle as one of the passengers was being arrested on an outstanding warrant. Police found a 9mm handgun under the driver’s seat near Adamcyk’s feet, according to the report. In her purse, police said they found several hypodermic needles, and they also found a clear glass pipe in the car. She said she used the pipe to smoke methamphetamine, according to police reports.

During a strip search at the DeKalb County Jail, deputies found a clear plastic bag with 4 grams of cocaine hidden on Adamcyk’s person.

In November, Adamcyk was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of a hypodermic needle and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to court records.

Adamcyk remained at the DeKalb County Jail as of Monday evening in lieu of $100,000 bond.

In 2015, Little Rock-Fox Fire Protection District officials called Adamcyk a hero after she helped save the life of a 21/2-year-old boy in the Lakewood Creek subdivision. Adamcyk waded out into the water in a retention pond where the boy was found floating, got him back to shore and revived him with chest compressions and mouthto-mouth resuscitation.

Number of trappers for animal control, fur continues to shrink

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com GENOA – In 1977, Rob Erickson, an expert on suburban coyote control and removal, caught more than 200 red foxes in less than a month and used the proceeds from selling their pelts to buy a house.

If he were to repeat this achievement in today’s market, he would make barely enough to buy a used car.

In part because of the reduced pricing of skins, the practice of fur trapping has continued to decline over the years, and Erickson said he doesn’t foresee it improving at any time in the near future.

“Raccoons have increased three to five times in the last few years, and to run fur lines for $2 raccoon pelts along with the cost of gas and traps, which are expensive, it’s hard to break even,” said Erickson, who has been trapping for more than 50 years and professionally for 35. “DeKalb has a large amount of distemper on the west side of Route 23, and that usually happens with more interaction with wild species through overpopulation.”

Groenewold Fur and Wool Co. in Forreston has muskrat furs ranging from $2 to $5.50 and raccoon furs ranging from $1 to $16 for dried skins depending on the size. Erickson said that a few years ago, muskrats could go for up to $15 and raccoons as high as $40.

Some of the most common animals trapped in the DeKalb County area include muskrats, raccoons, gray foxes and mink.

Erickson mainly focuses on coyotes when trapping, and as a member of Scientific Wildlife Management, a group trying to resolve incidents between humans and wild animals, works with clients to properly survey an animal problem and effectively deal with the animal, whether through relocation or death.

While some people trap for recreation, traps are often deployed to keep a species from suburbanizing and becoming a nuisance. Pelts can then be sold to local buyers or auctions to be used for clothing and other resources.

“Trappers provide a very important service to the community, but if [trappers] are not going to get paid for it, it’s going to discourage people from going out there,” Erickson said.

Seasoned trappers are able to skin, scrape and stretch their own pelts for clothing, decoration or other household uses.

Numerous factors influence the amount trappers received for pelts from year to year, such as current exchange rates and the amount of stored furs in buyers’ warehouses. A common fur in Illinois, such as raccoon, has a large number of skins in storage, which makes it unlikely the price will increase.

“People still have fur from the previous year because buyers will wait for indicators of prices for that year,” Erickson said. “The amount of nuisance animals will then rise because in bumper areas like DeKalb, no one will trap because the pelts are worthless.”

Mild winters also can significantly increase the population of animals targeted by trappers. Erickson said that an animal population can increase 18 percent to 20 percent from a mild winter because sick and old

animals will not die off from the cold.

Trapping is regulated by the conservation branch of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. An education course is required before any applicant is allowed a license and seasons are determined by state biologists who evaluate any problems a particular species may pose and then determine how many of that animal can be collected.

“There’s not a lot of guys out here [trapping] in Illinois,” said Mike Dreska, 57, of Genoa, who has been a trapping instructor for 25 years.

“Only about 3,500 licenses get sold in the state of Illinois per year. It can be hard work.”

Dreska works with the Genoa Township Highway Department, and now only traps recreationally, but his expertise has led him to aid in trapping across the world. He is sometimes recognized in his own hometown, as was the case when a friend of his stopped him in the middle of the road to see whether he could trap beavers for him.

was the second biggest export in the U.S. behind produce.

However, trade issues with nations such as Greece and China, two of the biggest fur purchasers, also have influenced pricing, Dreska added.

Last year, repercussions from the Greek debt crisis forced the Greek government to close all banks, leaving some fur brokers unable to transfer funds for recent purchases from international auctions.

Furs that couldn’t be bought in cash or from an outside account sat in storage.

In Russia, Dreska said that depreciation of the ruble, among other factors, has caused fur sales to fluctuate.

Countries such as Russia and China have a greater need for furs, which are used as insulation for winter clothing. Unlike the United States, most workers in northern countries rely on public transportation, leaving them exposed to the elements much longer than people who own vehicles.

“There are forces way beyond our control running things,” Erickson said.

Sycamore City Council considering collection agency for unpaid citations

SYCAMORE – Almost half of citations issued in Sycamore over a four-month period have gone unpaid, leading city officials to consider hiring a collection agency to help bring in fines.

In April, the City Council enacted an administrative adjudication system to make paying and contesting certain tickets easier, such as a $500 administrative tow fee and other changes.

In the four months after the changes, the city issued 1,694 citations, 70 percent of which were meter fines; 51 percent of those fines were paid, with the remaining 49 percent representing $17,400 in outstanding fines, according

to city documents.

The council reviewed a proposal Monday from the Sycamore Police Department to hire a company to streamline the collection process. Council members agreed to pursue the plan and request qualifications from potential agencies.

Police Chief Glenn Theriault said the city would continue to use the state’s Local Debt Recovery Program, which withholds outstanding debts from income tax returns or other state payments and gives them to the city, as well as the administrative adjudication system, which gives violators a series of notifications and information on how to contest fines.

“It’s really the combination of all these programs together that make the

effective encouragement for people to pay,” he said. “What we’re finding is collection companies will manage all those programs for us and do all the leg work, all the paperwork, and keep our record system up to date.”

Theriault said the people who would hear from the collection agency would have received at least four notifications per citation over a period of 100 to 130 days.

“It’s unfortunate that we have to do this, but I think it’s a strong way to ensure a sound system that’s adhered to,” he said.

City Manager Brian Gregory said administrative charges from most collection agencies used in Illinois are passed on to the violator.

He said the Local Debt Recovery

Program has been successful in recovering some fines, and booting and impounding cars has been another option. For those who do not live in town or receive income from the state, the city can go to court after 10 unpaid violations and request the person’s driver’s license be suspended.

“Each of those have varying degrees of success, and they are very time consuming,” Gregory said.

Council member Chuck Stowe said the council should be cautious in seeking out agencies to hire.

“Knowing how some collection agencies work, I think we really have to do a good job vetting them,” Stowe said. “I don’t want people getting phone calls at all hours of the night for a $1 parking ticket.”

Animals believed killed in Sycamore barn fire

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A fire broke out in a Sycamore-area livestock barn Monday afternoon off Barber Greene Road, with numerous animals presumed dead.

Deputy Meagan Pettengell of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said that the barn’s owner, Roger Sutherland, called 911 and was later taken to an area hospital for possible smoke inhalation. No other people were taken to the hospital.

Emergency officials blocked the road as firefighters put out the flames.

The fire was put out in about two hours. The cause of the fire hadn’t been publicly identified Monday evening.

About 14 piglets and some rabbits were believed to be in the barn at the time of the fire.

DeKalb County Animal Control was called to the scene and arrived about 5:45 p.m.

Firefighters from Sycamore, DeKalb, Genoa-Kingston, Hampshire, Burlington and Malta responded to the fire.

The property, located at 13875 Barber Greene Road in rural Sycamore, is owned by Roger and Silvia Sutherland.

Sutherland’s farm, known as Beeutiful Bounty, specializes in American Guinea hogs, Nigerian dwarf goats, honeybees, rabbits, turkeys and chickens, according to LocalHarvest.org. The farm also sells honey and other bee-related products and soaps made with goat’s milk. Piglets, bunnies and chicks also are for sale, the site says.

WILLIAM A. BRACKMANN

Born: September 22, 1921; in Glen Ellyn, IL Died: December 16, 2016; in Woodstock, IL

William A. Brackmann, 95, passed away Friday, December 16, 2016 at Woodstock Hospice Care Center.

He was born on the family farm on September 22, 1921 in Glen Ellyn to Edward and Ella (Kruse) Brackmann. On April 22, 1944 he married his “Sweetie” Ruth Blaschke. They were married for 62 years when she went to be with her Lord.

Bill was a hard worker and jack-of-all trades. He farmed for many years, worked at a dairy, and retired from International Harvester in 1983. He and his wife moved from Schaumburg to Sycamore and were members of The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John. He was a man of great faith, a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid golfer until age 89, loved playing cribbage, and lived a full life to the end.

He is survived by son, Tom (Jo Ann) Brackmann of Plainfield; daughter, Jean (Gary) Busse of McHenry; seven grandchildren, Tim (Denise) Brackmann, Carrie (Jamie) Hudjera, Brian (Hillary) Busse, David (Laurie) Busse, Dan Busse, Tony (Wendy) Detente, Eric (Mary) Detente; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Luella Mangaard; three sisters-in-law, Margaret and Jan Brackmann and Laura Hartmann; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents; wife; three brothers, Edward, Richard, and Robert Brackmann; two sisters, Evelyn Semeyn, Lorraine Vierow; three sisters-in-law, and six brothers-in-law.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John, 26555 Brickville Road, Sycamore, IL with the Rev. Robert Weinhold officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment will be on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in Elm Lawn Cemetery in Elmhurst.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the church and Woodstock Hospice Care Center.

Paul was a plumbing, heating and air conditioning contractor in the Fox Valley area for many years and finished out his career as a plumbing inspector for the city of St. Charles at age 77. He continued to volunteer his skills and services to the age of 82. Paul loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, golf, hunting, gardening, and was a Mason. He was kind, funny and could fix nearly anything. He will be greatly missed.

She then returned home to Pittsville and married Rupert Schiller on August 26, 1950. They lived and farmed on the Schiller Dairy Farm until September 28th, 1956 when they moved to Kings, IL. In 1967, Jean went to work at Northern Illinois University where she worked as a secretary for 30 years (22 of those years were in the Graduate History Office).

She retired at the age of 70. She gathered some neighbor ladies together and went to Oregon, IL to the Senior Center to learn line dancing. There were called the Boot Scootin’ Seniors. She enjoyed that for many years. DeKALB – The DeKalb School District 428 board will hear the results of an advance re-funding of school bond debts from 2008 that are expected to save taxpayers over $1 million in interest costs during Tuesday’s meeting.

District 428 borrowed $108 million in 2008 to build the new DeKalb High School, Cortland Elementary School and other building improvements.

However, it couldn’t efficiently structure the bond debt because of the recession, district officials said.

The debt was structured so that payments wouldn’t increase for the first nine years, taking into account an expected increase in property values during that time.

The board approved refinancing measures last month for $9.9 million in bond debt with the aid of Ehlers and Associates, a financial advisory company. Advance re-funding of this amount is the first step of a multiyear restructuring plan for the school’s debt.

Illinois electors cast 20 votes for Clinton

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois members of the Electoral College cast their ballots on Monday for Hillary Clinton, who won the Prairie State but lost the election to Donald Trump.

Democrat Clinton claimed all 20 of Illinois’ electoral votes, reflecting her 945,000-vote victory over Republican Trump. The three-dozen protesters chanting and holding a large “Stop Trump” banner in the state Capitol rotunda had only a symbolic reason to be there.

Afterward, electors offered differing views on whether the Electoral College, which makes the presidential election not a national referendum but the culmination of 50 state contests, should be preserved.

The sale of lotions and tinctures containing alcohol has risen in recent years as Russia has plunged into recession under the impact of Western sanctions and a slide in oil prices.

Stronger dollar could hinder Trump’s plans

WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump’s ambitious plans to revive exports, return jobs to the U.S. and increase oil drilling are running up against a home-grown threat: The surging U.S. dollar.

Since the Nov. 8 election, the dollar has shot up 5 percent. An index that tracks the dollar against other major currencies reached a 14year high after the election before dipping a bit since then.

In part, the dollar’s gain reflects the U.S. economy’s strength and investor confidence that Trump will accelerate growth by slashing taxes and pumping money into roads, bridges and other infrastructure. The dollar could rise even more now that the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates and foresees three more hikes next year. With rates far lower elsewhere in the world, many investors will shift money to the United States to capitalize on higher yields – a shift that could send the dollar even higher.

Which creates a problem: An expensive dollar makes U.S. goods costlier overseas – and imports cheaper in the U.S. That’s a recipe for more pain for American manufacturers. A high dollar can also lead some U.S. multinational companies to move operations to countries where their dollars go further.

And a high-priced dollar tends to shrink oil prices, thereby discouraging the increased energy production that Trump has made a center-

piece of his economic plans.

“A strong dollar will make it more challenging to boost the international competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing, bring back jobs and increase exports,” said Eswar Prasad, professor of trade policy at Cornell University.

Even before the election, a comparatively strong dollar had slowed U.S. exports for much of the past two years. Exports of goods and services had peaked in October 2014 at $200 billion. The figure fell to $179 billion in March before recovering slightly as the dollar weakened. But then the dollar marched back up and accelerated after Trump’s victory. It was no surprise when U.S. exports fell nearly 2 percent in October, according to the Commerce Department.

Consider what the strong dollar does to U.S. corporate earnings, too: Whatever revenue American companies earn in foreign currencies is worth less once it’s exchanged into U.S. dollars and returned home. In recent weeks, American companies, from Whirlpool to Apple, have complained that the strong dollar has dented their earnings.

At Vaughn Manufacturing Co. in Nashville, Tennessee, the company president, Mark Vaughn, is fretting about the dollar’s 11 percent rise against Mexico’s peso since the election.

Around 20 percent of Vaughn’s tool-and-die business is done in Mexico. And the company competes with Chinese and Korean companies that aren’t saddled with an expensive currency.

“It’s a concern,” he said.

Greenhouse closing after 112 years in DeKalb Know more

DeKALB – Jim Kaelin said what he will miss most after 51 years of owning and operating the DeKalb Florist and Greenhouse is not the plants, but the people.

“I enjoyed the people,” he said. “I won’t see all my friends and neighbors for the bedding plant season coming up shortly. That’s the biggest thing with me is the people, the camaraderie.”

Jim Kaelin, 81, and his wife, Doris Kaelin, 80, are preparing to retire and officially close shop on Friday. The greenhouse will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in January for liquidation sales, as a new developer plans to open a Casey’s General Store and gas station on the property.

The business at 2131 E. Lincoln Highway, which has been a greenhouse for 112 years, has been in the Kaelins’ family since 1965, when Jim Kaelin bought it with his brother-inlaw.

The business reopened after a fire in 1970 to include the flower shop in addition to the greenhouse, and Kaelin bought his partner’s share in 1974.

“Small businesses are the backbone of this community, and the country, and it’s getting harder and harder to do what we do,” she said.

10 years and is now seeing longtime customers share their sentiments.

“A lot of people have come through here that are older now and they kind of look at this place as a landmark, and I think there is going to be a loss,” Mueller said. “The city is losing a lot of their businesses; this being one of the oldest, it’s really provoked people thinking of the history here in DeKalb.”

Jim Kaelin said despite the challenges of running his business through the years, he has “enjoyed every minute of it.”

“That old saying, find something you like to do and you won’t work a day in your life, well, I haven’t worked for the last 50 years because I’ve been enjoying it that much,” he said. “And not very many people can say that.”

In downtown Sycamore, Pappas Development has completed the Fargoon-State mixed-use redevelopment to include the Fargo Home Furnishings store on the ground floor. Curt Lang remodeled the Sycamore Opera House Building to accommodate three storefronts, including Kramer’s Kitchen & Bath and Premier Realty Group.

On West State Street, Illinois Community Credit Union broke ground on construction of a new expanded headquarters branch on its current site combined with an adjacent corner parcel. Eggspress opened a breakfast and lunch restaurant on East State Street with a drive-through.

Alan Browne Chevrolet has announced plans for a 15,000-square-foot expansion of its Genoa dealership on Route 23. The Prairie Ridge Point shopping center was purchased by a new developer and space has been leased to Sylvan Learning Center.

Minnihan’s Irish Pub was established on Route 72 in downtown Genoa and Karlsbad Tavern has completed a major renovation.

Dollar General continued its growth in DeKalb County by building new stores in Waterman and Somonauk, while Casey’s General Store expanded its Maple Park operation. Mandy’s Just Because Gift Shop was established on Route 30 in Hinckley.

The new Jonamac Cider House was constructed to sample and sell apple wines and ciders at Jonamac Orchard in Malta and Remington’s Gastropub opened downtown on South Third Street.

In Shabbona, a St. Charles investor acquired and renovated the Indian Oaks Golf Course and opened a Bar & Grill in the renovated clubhouse.

Ag Tech, the Sandwich-based seed, fertilizer and agricultural services company, is building a new 24,000-square-foot building at Route 34 and Gletty Road.

Ideal Industries Inc. Chairman and CEO Jim James announced the appointment of Douglas Sanford as group president and general manager for Ideal United States.

In his new role, Sanford will provide strategic leadership and direction for the company’s capstone Wire Termination and Tools & Supplies business units, as well as assuming responsibility for the Aerospace business unit and corporate research and development. He will report Douglas to James, and assume Sanford his new duties effective immediately.

About Trump and legal pot

In November, eight more states voted to legalize medical or recreational marijuana. In all, 29 states have approved the medicinal use of marijuana and only six have done nothing to ease the prohibition of pot.

All that could be undone by one simple fact: President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., to be his attorney general and, as reported

by Politico, Sessions has a long history of opposing marijuana and any steps to legalize it. He has called reform of marijuana laws a “tragic mistake” and once said he thought members of the Ku Klux Klan “were OK until I found out they smoked pot.”

A reversal of current policy by Sessions is a real possibility. Under federal law, marijuana remains classified as a Schedule 1 narcotic, the same as heroin. With that, he would need no additional authorization or authority to start cracking down on all involved.

That is a problem – and not just for those who like their weed. For starters, everywhere it has occurred, legalization has been accomplished by a vote of the people.

Barring a profound constitutional conflict, those votes should be respected.

More than half of all Americans now live in states where medical marijuana is allowed, while 65 million live where recreational marijuana is legal. And, according to Politico, marijuana is now a $6.7 billion industry.

Fortune reported in February that it topped $1 billion in Colorado alone.

It also means jobs. Citing industry sources, CBS News reports that nationwide, the marijuana trade employs roughly the same number of people – more than 100,000 – as there are flight attendants, web developers or librarians.

Moreover, legal marijuana has become a major source of revenue for a number of states. Counting total revenue from marijuana taxes, licenses and fees, Colorado reported that it took in almost $73 million in one year.

That is real money, especially to a state perennially strapped for cash. It would be wrong to let one man upset all that based solely on his own prejudice – and in defiance of millions of voters.

It seems unlikely that the Senate will refuse to confirm Sessions as attorney general, despite his poor record on civil rights and other issues. But there is one other man who could prevent causing trouble over pot.

As president, Donald Trump could simply tell Sessions to respect the voters and leave marijuana alone. And Politico quoted U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, D-Boulder, urging just that.

“If we don’t take action and hold President-elect Trump accountable,” Polis said, “in one fell swoop, the federal government could damage state economies, and discourage entrepreneurship – placing some of our innovators behind bars, all while eroding states’ rights.”

Polis is right, of course. The question now is whether Trump is listening.

Find help for seasonal sadness We are in the midst of our first cold snap of the season. For many, the cold weather simply enhances the feeling of the Christmas season. It is particularly fun when the cold weather is associated with clear skies and bright sunshine.

It brings to mind cuddling up with loved ones before a roaring fire, drinking hot chocolate and contentment.

But for others, the cold weather and gray skies often conjure up other thoughts, much less happy ones.

As days get shorter, darker and colder, many people experience the blues, also known as the holiday blues.

The Mississippi Department of Mental Health said this depression for many is part of seasonal affective disorder. Experts say changing levels of the brain chemicals melatonin and serotonin, which plays a role in our mood and how we sleep, triggers the depression. Seratonin is the body’s feel-good chemical and it’s generated in part by sunlight. When we are exposed to less sunlight, we could experience lower levels of

serotonin.

The good news is help is available. If you or a loved one is experiencing sadness, loss of interest in activities you typically enjoy, feelings of hopelessness or a strong depression, please reach out for help.

Experts at the Mississippi Department of Mental Health recommend making extra effort to get as much sunlight as possible. Open window blinds during the day and sit close to the window. Eat lunch outside when the weather allows.

You can even benefit from being outdoors when it’s cloudy.

Staying active and continuing to exercise can help fight seasonal depression, as well as stress and anxiety. Spending time with family and friends who make up your support network can help, too.

However, if depression and sadness begin to affect your everyday life, it’s time to ask for help.

Anyone who believes they or a loved one is in need of help should find it.

2. TV spots don’t matter so much anymore, either. In the 1970s, campaigns ran television ads because it was the best way to reach voters. There were only three networks, and you could “roadblock” them with spots that almost no one could avoid seeing. So many gross rating points produced so many votes.

Today old-line network audiences are a fraction of what they used to be, and technology allows people to skip TV ads altogether. A zero-cost tweet can get more attention than a $10 million TV ad barrage, and a YouTube video can earn a candidate more votes than a TV ad.

A corollary is that the Democrats’ obsession with the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, which allowed corporate political communications, is utterly beside the point. Visible corporations don’t want to take partisan sides – or if they do, their public relations departments opt for political correctness.

3. Celebrities don’t count. Did anyone vote for Clinton because Beyonce and

Lady Gaga did concerts for her? Bruce Springsteen’s Monmouth County, New Jersey, voted for Trump.

4. Outrageous statements aren’t disqualifying. The Clinton campaign spent the bulk of its ad budget on spots about decrying Trump’s character, and this bombardment was augmented by mainstream media talking heads expressing horror about his latest outrage. But voters seeking change didn’t much mind.

As Salena Zito, the reporter most alert to Trump’s appeal, wrote, “the press takes him literally, but not seriously; his supporters take him seriously, but not literally.” Many voters are tired of being told they can’t say things that are politically incorrect – for example, noting that many terrorists are Islamists. They don’t mind – in fact, they rather like it – when candidates do.

5. Polling and big data don’t automatically generate the right moves.

Campaign strategists have used polls to shape messages since the 1960s, often shrewdly. But poll interpretation is not a science but an art. The Clinton campaign didn’t notice its candidate’s weakness in the outstate (counties outside metropolitan areas with a million-plus people) Midwest, because those areas are just one subgroup in statewide polls – although Iowa polls were a clue.

that President Barack Obama had won in 2012 to Trump.

Big data interpretation must be combined with what German military thinkers called Fingerspitzengefuhl, or fingertip feeling. The Clinton campaign had scads of big data in its Brooklyn, New York, headquarters but was so rigid in its application that it ran more late-campaign TV ads in Omaha (for Nebraska’s 2nd District’s one electoral vote) than in Wisconsin and Michigan (26 electoral votes).

6. Not being able to understand how the opposition thinks is huuuugely dangerous. This is actually an old rule, but one in particular need of reiteration.

The Trump campaign seems to have had a pretty good idea of what its Republican opponents and the Clinton campaign were up to, but the reverse was clearly not true. In postelection interviews, Clinton campaign operatives were blaming their defeat on racism, the FBI director and the Russians.

Mature adults would be seeking to understand how they failed to see how the rules were changing.

Trump’s appointees will have a large impact

It’s natural to evaluate Donald Trump’s appointments by whether we agree with the stances of the appointees.

But it’s also worth asking how effective an administration those picks will produce.

The most striking feature of many of the selections is their relative lack of experience in traditional politics.

There are a lot of ex-generals and a high number with corporate backgrounds, including from the energy sector. Wall Street is well represented. President Barack Obama’s picks had stronger educational credentials.

But are those bugs or features for Trump? I think they’re features – signs we will be in for an active four years.

In addition to expertise, an appointee may be picked for some of these reasons:

• Ability to command the interest of the public in policy change.

• Ability to influence Congress.

• Ability to think outside the usual Washington “boxes.”

• Ability to reach and motivate the president when necessary.

The unusual backgrounds of many Trump appointees make more sense by these standards. For instance, Trump does not seem to be detail-focused or policy-oriented, as Obama has been. It’s therefore more important that he can rely on advisers to direct his attention.

That means nominating candidates who have credibility with him and who can speak his language, rather than eggheads. They might be relatively effective taking their cases to the broader public, even if they don’t have experience working the levers of Washington.

It’s not hard to imagine a Trump presidency where the agencies and departments are run more as autonomous

fiefs than is usually the case, with the heads making their own appointments and driving their own agendas. That could be a recipe for a small number of major reform breakthroughs from Trump subordinates, and a larger number of failures. Public opinion doesn’t usually defeat the process-oriented constraints of the Washington establishment, but occasionally it does, as for instance when anti-AIDS drugs were rushed through the regulatory process, or when politicians in the 1970s took airline deregulation to the American public and brought about the rare abolition of a Washington bureaucracy, the Civil Aeronautics Board.

If the political default is not much change in the first place, introducing more variance into the policy process may shake up at least some parts of the status quo. There will be plenty of gaffes, dead ends and policy embarrassments along the way, but don’t confuse

those with a lack of results. An incoming administration that does not mind embarrassment is a bit like a sports team that has little to lose. It is easy to say that neurosurgeon Ben Carson is unqualified to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development, but it would be a mistake to dismiss his potential influence.

I’m not suggesting you should agree with the Trump agenda (whatever that might turn out to be), and I am especially worried about his selection of Michael Flynn as national security adviser. But I interpret Trump’s nominations as a sign of an intelligent and strategic process, and his choices may prove surprisingly effective in getting things done. Whether you like it or not.

Over the 40-some years that I have been working or closely observing the political campaign business, the rules of the game haven’t changed much.

Technology has changed the business somewhat, but the people who ran campaigns in the 1970s could have (and in some cases actually have) run them four decades later.

But suddenly this year, the rules seemed to change. Let me try to count the ways.

1. Money doesn’t seem to matter so much anymore. “Money is the mother’s milk of politics,” the legendary California Assembly Speaker Jesse Unruh said a half-century ago. But some winning campaigns this year operated on what Unruh might have regarded as low-lactose diets, notably Donald Trump’s.

The Trump campaign spent only slightly more than half as much as the Hillary Clinton campaign but won nearly a third more electoral votes. And that’s not counting the spending of super PACs supporting the Democrat.

Sure, after 13 years of “The Apprentice,” Trump had the advantage of celebrity, which helped him get the lion’s share of cable coverage during the primary season. But he used the spotlight to make arguments and advance policies that won votes. Clinton spent most of August fundraising in rich people’s

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The DeKalb girls basketball team took only its second lead of the game late in the third quarter against Rochelle.

The Barbs couldn’t hang onto that lead and ultimately lost, 55-48, Monday night.

The Barbs (2-11, 0-4 Northern Illinois Big 12) dug themselves a small hole early against the Hubs (4-7, 1-3) by committing multiple turnovers that led to points for Rochelle. The Hubs continued to earn foul shots into the second quarter that helped them keep the lead.

Despite putting Rochelle at the line early, DeKalb was able to keep within striking distance. The Hubs turned consecutive possessions into points that gave them a 29-21 lead heading into halftime. The Hubs were led by Jacie Wyatt, who had 16 points. Morgan Baker scored 13.

“It’s huge to be able to get to the line like that,” Rochelle coach Tony Rowan said. “That was one of our points of emphasis. We got to the foul line twice within the first three minutes of the game, and I believe we shot around 33 free throws tonight. That really set the tone for the game. The referees called a lot of fouls both ways, and when there’s that much stoppage, it’s hard to get in a flow of the game. The kids did a fantastic job not letting that affect how they play the game.”

Underclassmen are making their presence felt on the basketball court this season.

Luke Davis, a center on the Southwest Illinois men’s basketball team, has become a key reserve. The 6-foot-8 freshman from DeKalb has averaged 8.9 points and 6.7 rebounds a game.

He’s also started three games for the Blue Storm (5-7).

In a 97-96 loss to Wabash Valley on Dec. 10, Davis was 8 for 9 from the field for 19 points. He also pulled down 12

rebounds and had three blocks.

Through nine games, Ty Carlson has averaged a team-high 32 minutes a game for Aurora University. The sophomore forward from Kaneland is second on the Spartans, averaging 16.8 points a game. He’s also averaged 5.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists a game.

With four straight wins, the Rock Valley men’s basketball team is heading into its two-week hiatus for winter break on a high note. DeKalb grad and sophomore forward Jace Kitchen had 14 points as the Golden Eagles beat Waubonsee, 92-79, on Thursday.

Waubonsee freshman Lauren Goff has scored 10.5 points a game for the Chiefs’ women’s basketball team. The Sycamore graduate has shot 38 percent from the field and 30 percent from 3-point range. She’s averaged 4.2 assists and 3.7 rebounds a game.

DeKalb grad and Lincoln sophomore guard Jasmine Malloy has aver-

aged 3.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists a game. Lincoln evened its record at 7-7 after a 68-53 home win Thursday against Rover Morris.

Alyassa Burgess has played in all nine games for Ripon College (5-4).

The freshman guard from DeKalb has averaged 1.1 points and 1.7 rebounds a game. The exercise science major has twice posted game highs of three points. She pulled down a career-best four rebounds Nov. 26.

It took until the middle of December, but Buffalo redshirt sophomore wrestler Kyle Akins returned from an injury that kept him out of action. The 125-pounder beat Kent State’s Cory Simpson by a 13-5 major decision Sunday.

Buoyed by Akins’ return, the Bulls wrestling team scored a 23-12 win against the Golden Flashes. It was Buffalo’s first win against Kent State since 2005.

Coming out of the locker room, Rochelle looked like a different team. The Hubs didn’t score in the first three minutes of the third quarter, which can be credited to DeKalb’s stingier defense.

The Barbs stormed back to take a 32-31 lead after Uriah Hegwood’s 3-pointer with 3:13 left in the quarter. The Barbs took a 38-35 lead into the fourth quarter.

The final quarter was a competitive one as the teams traded leads until the final minute when DeKalb coach Elliot Whitefield said inexperience hindered the Barbs.

“These girls haven’t been in this position in these close games,” Whitefield said. “They certainly don’t have the experience at the varsity level right now. Right now, it’s a learning experience, that’s for sure.

When you get into a position where you need to foul and time is running off the clock, that’s inexperience and not being in that position. Those are all correctable, but the fight and effort they showed tonight will make the difference in a game.”

DeKalb was led by Hegwood, who scored 12 points, and Jacki Rapp with 10.

After trailing by as many as 21 points in the second quarter, the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team got to within three in the fourth quarter, but fell, 97-83, to South Dakota in the UMKC tournament Monday in Kansas City, Missouri.

The lead for the defending WNIT champs peaked at 57-36 with 24 seconds left in the first half, but the Huskies opened the second half on a 15-3 run.

In the fourth quarter, Ally Lehman hit a short jumper to get the Huskies within 89-72, but after the teams traded buckets, South Dakota scored nine straight over the next two minutes to secure the win.

Cassidy Glenn scored 26 points for the Huskies, while Courtney Woods added 19. Lehman (11 points) had eight assists and six rebounds.

Despite not playing a down for the Iowa football team, freshman Nick Niemann earned a Team Leader award for the Hawkeyes. The linebacker from Sycamore’s older brother, Ben , is a starting linebacker for Iowa.

Bulls put an end to losing streak

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – It’s not that Fred Hoiberg didn’t appreciate what Taj Gibson said.

Heck, considering the week the second-year coach had, any veteran player throwing a life preserver in his direction earned some gratitude.

“We’re all in this thing together,” Hoiberg said, when asked about Gibson insisting that the recent slump was on the players, not the coach.

But Hoiberg was looking for actions, not just kind words, and against the Detroit Pistons on Monday, he finally got both.

Thanks to a first-half explosion in which the Bulls (14-13) scored a season-high 69 points on 32-for-44 (72.7 percent) shooting, Hoiberg watched a dismal three-game losing streak come to an end, 113-82. Coincidentally, the 69 points was the total scored in the 95-69 loss to Milwaukee on Friday.

What a difference a game makes.

And throw in a passionate talk from Dwyane Wade to his teammates, a 21/2hour Sunday practice and a lethargic bench being called out along the way.

Although it was a performance the Bulls needed to get some of their swagger back, it might have been even more important for Hoiberg, who admittedly was “miserable’’ to be around lately.

Unfortunately for the Pistons (1416), they had to bear the brunt of that built-up disappointment.

Even better news came when Hoiberg went to the bench at the 3:39 mark of that first quarter, and rather than watching that unit let leads slip away, it actually built on it.

As far as giving away a big lead as they did against Minnesota last week?

Mirotic back in Hoiberg’s rotation, but for how long?

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO –There’s no doubt the news hit Nikola Mirotic hard last week.

When talking about the fact he was out of the Bulls’ rotation – temporarily or not – the third-year player used words such as “surprised” and “difficult.”

“It’s the first time in my career that this is happening, but it’s the coach’s decision, so I’ve got to respect that,” Mirotic said. “There’s not too much I can say about that.”

And although Fred Hoiberg had a sit-down meeting with Mirotic to tell him the news Friday and the reasoning behind it, the second-year coach has been keeping an eye on Mirotic to make sure he was handling it the right way.

“He’s engaged,” Hoiberg said Monday. “There’s no doubt about that. He’s been the first guy in the gym, really

since last week. He was coming in, getting extra work in, so that’s important when you’re taken out of a lineup, to try and work your way back in it.”

As far as when Mirotic will become a permanent fixture back in the rotation, it sounds as though it’s going to be a feel thing. Basically, when Hoiberg sees it, he’ll know it.

He did use Mirotic in Nikola Mirotic the first quarter Monday against Detroit, but won’t commit to it being permanent.

“He’s a guy that we need out there, he spaces the floor,” Hoiberg said.

“He’s a guy that can, hopefully, knock down shots for us, and make plays.

He’s a cerebral player. The big thing is right now keeping after it, continuing to work, and being ready when your

name is called.”

This is a similar approach Hoiberg has taken with the likes of Bobby Portis, Jerian Grant and Cristiano Felicio, and it starts with practices and extra work. If a player does well in those two categories, minutes in games are handed out until there’s reason to keep handing them out or take them away.

“Now it’s about going out and taking advantage and playing well and going from there,” Hoiberg said.

Carter-Williams update: Michael Carter-Williams (left wrist) went through all noncontact aspects of the Sunday practice and had no setbacks Monday, so now the plan is to eventually get him into contract drills, maybe at some point this week.

As far as how long before he can start playing in games, Carter-Williams was asked whether he thought he would be good by Christmas and re-

plied, “Yeah, I would hope so.”

Looking for 3s: Hoiberg knew the Bulls could have problems from the outside coming into the season, but they’ve hit rock bottom, now dead last in the NBA in 3-point attempts with 19.6 a game, as well as 3-pointers made with 5.9 a game.

To put it in perspective, Houston led the NBA with 38.9 attempts a game and 14.9 made heading into Monday.

“Well, in today’s era, obviously you look at all the analytics,” Hoiberg said.

“The 3-point shot is obviously a very important component to this game.”

The message to his players?

“You gotta take ’em,” Hoiberg said.

“You gotta take ’em when you’re open.

You gotta rise up with confidence, and again, you gotta knock ’em down and make them come out and guard you, and, hopefully, open up some driving lanes for our playmakers.”

Hinostroza puts slow start behind him

mlazerus@suntimes.com Streaking down the ice Sunday night with the puck on his stick and the team’s leading goal-scorer – heck, the 37th-leading goal scorer in NHL history – on his left, Vinnie Hinostroza was shooting all the way, barely even glancing over at Marian Hossa before snapping a shot between San Jose goalie Martin Jones’ legs. It was a bold decision. A confident one. The correct one.

And one that, two or three months ago, Hinostroza probably doesn’t make.

“It’s really hard [not to force a pass],” Hinostroza said after his insurance goal late in the third helped the Blackhawks beat the Sharks. “He’s one of the best players in the world. You always want him to have the puck. But if you shoot the puck, you can get an assist, he can get the rebound. So I was just trying to get it on net there, and it found its way to the back.”

Since Artem Anisimov left Saturday’s game in St. Louis with an upper-body injury, Hinostroza has gotten another crack at centering Hossa and longtime buddy Ryan Hartman, and the small-but-speedy 22-year-old from Bartlett has run with the opportunity.

After scoring just one goal in his first 23 games, Hinostroza has scored in consecutive games, including the game-winner in St. Louis. He has two goals and two assists in his past five games. His three-point night in Vancouver on Nov. 19 had been the only game in which he’d

Hinostroza had been a little antsy about his lack of production, but not terribly surprised. After all, he didn’t score his first goal in Rockford until Dec. 18 last season, yet still finished with 18 on the season. He has reminded himself of that over the first few months of his NHL career to buoy his confidence and fend off frustration.

“I think this is the time of year where things start bouncing my way,” he said.

“So hopefully, we keep continuing to

get chances and hit the back of the net.”

Hinostroza’s comfort level has increased dramatically since the early stages of the season, when he seemed a step behind fellow rookies Hartman, Tyler Motte and Nick Schmaltz. Hinostroza was a healthy scratch eight times in a 10-game span, and was playing just 7 to 8 minutes a night. He was tentative, reluctant to shoot and sometimes overwhelmed in his own end.

Now, he looks confident and aggressive in the offensive zone. And while

Joel Quenneville would like to see him become a little more reliable in his own end, Hinostroza is feeling a lot less like a rookie these days.

“For us young guys, it’s felt like just hockey again for a while now,” Hartman said.

In fact, all the rookies got a major vote of confidence from the organization last month when they were granted permission to leave their downtown hotel and find their own places to live in the city – a sign that the team believes they’re here to stay. Hartman, Hinostroza and the others spent much of the circus trip looking for apartments online.

Hinostroza hasn’t been a healthy scratch once since Nov 11. And while he’s largely been relegated to centering the fourth line, he’s filled in admirably between Hartman and Hossa when Jonathan Toews was out, and again with Anisimov out.

And now that it’s mid-December and he’s found the back of the net again, the Hawks hope he’s just getting started.

“He was off to a slow start last season, and then finished off really strong,” Hartman said. “You can see goals come in bunches, and he’s really hitting his stride. When that’s happening, he’s a dangerous player. With that speed, he can make a lot of guys look silly out there.”

Washington loses control of playoff hopes with loss

LANDOVER, Md. – Kirk Cousins threw an interception and fumbled near his goal line as the Washington Redskins coughed up their easiest path to the playoffs with a 26-15 loss to the defending NFC champion Carolina Panthers on Monday night.

Washington (7-6-1) could have clinched a playoff berth by winning its final three games but now needs help.

Carolina (6-8) kept its astronomical wild-card hopes alive and dealt a serious blow to the Redskins’ chances with two weeks left in the season.

After being picked off by Kurt Coleman in the first half to set up a Carolina

field goal, Cousins was sacked by Wes Horton and fumbled on the first snap after halftime as the Panthers took over at the 1-yard line. They scored two plays later to take a 20-9 lead.

Cousins finished 32 of 47 for 316 yards with far too many missed throws in a game with such high stakes.

Reigning league MVP Cam Newton showed no ill effects from a shoulder injury suffered last week, throwing for 300 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers took advantage of blunders by the Redskins, who lost their sixth consecutive Monday night home game.

It was Washington’s most lopsided loss since being routed 38-16 by Pittsburgh in the season opener, also on a Monday night.

Flags for 15: Newton was penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct in the second quarter for taunting Redskins linebacker Trent Murphy after scrambling for a 1-yard gain. Newton thought the flag was on Murphy for hitting him in the helmet while sliding.

Instead, the penalty took the Panthers out of field goal range, moving the ball from the Washington 26 to the 41.

Redskins tight end Jordan Reed took an even costlier penalty late in the third quarter when he was flagged 15 yards and ejected for throwing a punch at Coleman. That penalty contributed to Washington settling for a field goal when trailing by 14.

Medications help fight seasickness Dear Doctors: I’m going sailing with friends soon. Since I tend to get motion sickness in cars and airplanes, I’m worried that means I’ll get seasick as well. Are there any natural remedies?

Dear Reader: If it helps at all, you’re far from alone. A large portion of the population suffers some degree of motion sickness during travel. The most common effects – dizziness, nausea, even vomiting – are sure to ruin your day. For some people, additional symptoms such as cold sweats, a throbbing headache or a bout of anxiety only deepen the misery.

The culprit in motion sickness is believed to be (scientists still aren’t sure) the disconnect between what your eyes see and what the sensitive mechanism in your inner ear, which controls balance, feels.

When you walk or run or twist or bend down, those structures in your inner ear, known as the vestibular system, are in sync with what your eyes are telling you. You are moving, but the ground you stand on is not.

On a boat, however, your eyes and your inner ear are sending seriously mixed messages to your brain. Your eyes know you are sitting still, but according to your vestibular system, you’re in motion. For reasons that are still unclear, it is this sensory disconnect that lights up pathways in the brain, causing the symptoms of motion sickness. And all you want is relief.

Some sufferers rely on antihistamines such as Dramamine, an over-the-counter medication, which can control nausea and vomiting. Prescription medications, including the Transderm Scop patch and promethazine, also can help with the symptoms of seasickness. But these medications can have side effects such as dry mouth or drowsiness.

Since you want to go the natural route, let’s take a look at your options.

If possible, gaze out at a fixed point on the horizon. This lets your brain confirm the input that it’s getting from your eyes and your inner ear – yep, you’re definitely in motion. (For people who tend to get carsick, riding in the front seat can help in the same way.)

As for natural remedies, a lot of travelers swear by ginger, which has been shown to ease nausea associated with motion sickness.

You can find ginger in powdered form in many natural food stores and pharmacies.

Dramamine also offers what it says is a clinically tested full dose of powdered ginger, packaged in a single capsule. Candied ginger and ginger tea also are options.

Although there is conflicting evidence over its effectiveness, acupressure has its proponents. In this method, constant pressure is applied to the insides of the wrists via special elastic wristbands.

When you do find an effective natural cure, there’s a bonus. You’re now prepared for the latest frontier in motion sickness – virtual reality.

My dad started an affair with a woman who is four years older than I am. He met her when he hired her for her “services.”

Fast-forward a year: He has left my mom. Mom left the state and has moved in with me. She’s trying to rebuild her life, but she’s still very much in love with my dad.

Dad, on the other hand, is miserable. His girlfriend is controlling to the point he’s not allowed to talk to his children or grandchildren.

She’s an alcoholic who mentally, verbally and physically abuses him. He recently left her and came to stay at my house. He told Mom and me he wanted a fresh start.

Abby, he was here for less than 48 hours and went back to the girlfriend. I am convinced he either has a drug problem or he’s sick. I have no idea how to help him and I’m terrified he is going to die.

Now he won’t talk to me. He left while I was at work so he wouldn’t have to face me. I am disgusted, disappointed and angry. Should I cut all ties with him until he gets his life together? –
