The Associated Press MINEVILLE, N.Y. – Some look at an abandoned, centuries-old iron mine in New York’s Adirondacks and see a relic.

An ambitious group of engineers sees the shafts in Mineville as a new way to provide a steady flow of electricity in a growing market for renewable energy.

They are pitching a plan to circulate some of the millions of gallons of groundwater that have flooded the mine shafts over the years to power an array of 100 hydroelectric turbines a half-mile underground.

They envision the operation as a solution for solar and wind power producers, who need ways to ensure an uninterrupted flow of energy when the sun isn’t shining and winds are still.

“Today, everyone’s recognizing that a critical part of our energy infrastructure is going to be storage,” said Jim Besha, head of Albany Engineering Corp., as he gave officials a tour of the mine site about 100 miles north of Albany.

“You can think of it as a bank. If someone has excess solar energy, they would pay a fee to store it overnight.”

While logistically complex, the plan is at the same time incredibly simple: Engineers would drain roughly half of the water from the shafts and pump the remainder into an upper chamber. The water would then be released into a lower chamber, powering turbines and creating electricity. The turbines would be reversed to pump the water back up to repeat the process.

Technically, the pumped water is considered stored energy, to be released strategically when power is needed.

The Mineville Pumped Storage Project still faces federal approvals and up to three years of construction, but it could become one of the first projects of its kind in the nation.

It also would mark a 21st century re-use of a mine that famously contributed iron for the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War on nearby Lake Champlain and was mined for the last time in 1971.

Kishwaukee College staff, students celebrate fall commencement

news@daily-chronicle.com More than 100 students walked across a stage for the final time in their community college careers Saturday during Kishwaukee College’s first fall commencement ceremony.

Fall graduates traditionally have walked in a separate spring ceremony, but Kishwaukee College President Laurie Borowicz said she wanted to give the more than 600 eligible students – many of whom will relocate by the spring to be closer to fouryear universities or newfound jobs – a more opportune chance to be recognized for their accomplishments.

“We’re thrilled that the weather cooperated with us, that we were able to get people out to our campus safely, but graduation is what it’s all about – celebrating the successes and accomplishments of our students, so these are very important days to us,” Borowicz said.

Borowicz replaced former President Tom Choice after he retired Dec. 31, 2015. She said the idea for a fall commencement came to her as her first semester as president came to a close.

“Last spring after graduation, I went to a store in town to pick something up. And a young lady – I was telling her it was Kish’s commencement today – said, ‘Oh, I graduated last fall, but there wasn’t a commencement, so I decided not to wait and come back in the spring,’ ” Borowicz said.

“Because we do have 622 students who did graduate in the fall, we decided to give it a try here at Kish. We were going to be happy if 75 students walked, and we had 110.”

Among those 110 students were people such as Janini Avalos, a second-generation-American who grew from a child who did not know English to a Phi Theta Kappa member who graduated magna cum laude. Phi Theta Kappa is a national honor society for community college students.

Avalos said she wants to get into nursing to help bridge the gap between native Spanish speakers and health care professionals.

“When I speak to other Hispanic families, they always have problems explaining themselves really comfortably because they don’t

“I mean, yes, they may understand it, but trying to get their voices out and making sense of what is going on with them and what health problems they have is difficult because they may not pronounce it well,” Avalos added.

Avalos wasn’t alone in wanting to use her degree to help a community in need. Chrissandra Glenn, a mother of two, said she wants to pursue a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at either Aurora University or Western Illinois University.

“I really like to help people, and I want to work with children to help them better themselves and help to get them to go to the right path,” Glenn said.

DeKalb Madrigals hold evening of song, feasting and holiday cheer

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The 200 community members who made their way to Northern Illinois University’s Altgeld Hall on Friday for DeKalb High School’s Madrigal Dinner were greeted by a Royal Court of 34 students, including the king, played

by Ben Vance.

Vance, a senior, has been performing in the group since his sophomore year.

He was looking forward to singing a particularly challenging song, “Miserere.”

“Miserere is originally sacred music, and it was only permitted to be sung in the Sistine Chapel,” Vance said. “The story is that when Mozart was 14, he went to a concert at the Vatican, and he heard ‘Miserere’ being sung. Since he was such a musical genius, he was able to memorize and break down all of the parts by ear and transcribed the whole piece a few days later, and that’s why we’re able to sing it today. I think it’s really pretty.”

The Madrigals had a sold-out Saturday performance that was the culmination of months of work by students, teachers and alumni.

The performance featured Vance as the king, Grace Klonoski as the queen, Richie Spahn as the prince, Ashley Kelly as the princess and Mark Jesmer and Destiny Feliciano as the royal communicators. Those students were picked after they attended a team-building retreat in August, Kelly said.

“Shortly after the retreat, the entire court gets a ballot, and the ballot has a bunch of categories on leadership, musical performance and how the [students] act in the group,” Kelly said. “Whoever gets the highest scores gets the role as king, queen, prince, princess and royal communicators.”

Choir Director Travis Erikson said that this tradition has been performed for many generations at DeKalb High School. He started directing the event after he was hired in 2002. The show was first held in the auditorium of the old high school, but it outgrew the space.

community member paid for the rental, Erikson said.

Once school starts, Erikson said students have to participate four hours a week in order to meet state class-time requirements, but they end up giving more time to the course.

“Come October, they usually volunteer to have a three-hour rehearsal instead of a two-hour rehearsal, then they’ll go three days a week instead of two, and when we get to November and December, sometimes they’re going four days a week,” Erikson said. “They have a real passion for the music, and they want to perform a lot of music.”

This year they performed carols in German, French, Italian, Latin, Spanish and English. In past years, they’ve also done Swedish, Norwegian, Russian and Latvian songs. Erikson said he’s used Nataliya Zimmerman, the school’s French teacher, as a resource.

“We have such a strong French program here at the high school; likewise with Spanish. German is a little trickier, but they’re used to it now,” Erikson said.

“Norwegian, Swedish and Russian are less familiar, and required more work.

Madame Zimmerman speaks Russian, so we have a coach in-house, which is really helpful.”

The event also includes a skit that is performed while the guests eat dinner.

Erikson said an alumna of the group, Samantha Blikhan, wrote this year’s story.

She was the queen in 2004 and 2005, and has since earned a Ph.D. in medieval and renaissance music history from Oxford.

The story this year played off of the TV show “Game of Thrones.”

Erikson said he also receives support from Donna Schultz-Xidis, a retired textiles teacher. She costumes the students in clothing based on the Italian Renaissance.

“She’s quite the artist,” Erikson said.

“They’re impeccably made and very authentic.”

Event attendees included students’ families and teachers, as well as community members.

Karen Mason and her husband, David, were joining friends for the dinner.

“We’re excited to start the Christmas season,” she said. “We used to come when the university did it years ago, but this is the first time we’ve come for the

high school. ... I like to see teenagers use their talents.”

Linda Kerr and her husband, John, also came to start their holiday celebrations. One tradition she enjoys is the requirement of guests to participate in the show if they want salt for their food.

“I have my recorder with me in case I have enough nerve to do it,” she said.

Angel Smith, the music department’s administrative assistant, said the group has performed for many community groups as a service to DeKalb residents.

This year they’ve already done six performances at places such as Safe Passage and the Kiwanis Club of DeKalb, and have been asked to do more after the dinners.

“We try to fit as many [service shows] in as we can, especially the senior programs for those who cannot get out,” Smith said.

Sharing the music with the community is what Kelly loves about the event.

“Music teaches us things that other things in life can’t,” she said. “We all connect closely through the music, and we spend so much time in rehearsals together, we’ve become such a family.”

kettle donations down in 2016

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Salvation Army’s iconic red kettles have collected about 63 percent of the anticipated earnings in DeKalb, with only a week remaining.

This year, as of Wednesday, the Salvation Army’s DeKalb branch had collected $57,341.96 out of the $90,000 coordinators had aimed at achieving with the red kettles. At this time last year, almost $60,000 had been collected.

Captain Michelle Graham, a Salvation Army coordinator, said that although more volunteers stepped up this year than in 2015, the weather likely is the main reason donations have dipped.

“The numbers go down because of the weather, especially with the snowstorms occurring these past weekends,” Graham said. “I’m thankful for everyone who has donated so far, and we know that what we may need can be provided for us.”

Volunteers have come from Kishwaukee Kiwanis, Sycamore and DeKalb Rotary Clubs, Kishwaukee Sunrise Rotary, Christ Community Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church and Clinton Rosette Middle School. Sycamore Kiwanis also are among those who volunteered.

Clinton Rosette Principal Tim Vincent said that three different groups of students rang bells over the month of December; he said that weather conditions didn’t play a factor.

“When we sign up ahead of time, we’re really committing to it, because it takes quite a bit of work to arrange permission slips, transportation and other things to follow through logistically,” he said.

The school’s middle school band and Builders Club, a community service group, volunteered last Saturday while a number of students with emotional disabilities aided by their teachers helped ring bells on Dec. 1, according to Vincent.

“The Builders Club and middle school band are troopers,” Vincent said. “Their mission is community service so they will show up in any conditions and be enthusiastically involved with it.”

Although numbers last year were below estimated levels, DeKalb’s 2015 goal was achieved from an anonymous donor at the end of the bell-ringing season.

Graham said the Salvation Army still hopes to collect $120,000 by the end of January. About 80 percent of this number comes from bell-ringing donations. Collections go to the Salvation Army’s food pantry, emergency assistance funds, administration fees and other services.

OBITUARIES JOAN MAE HARRIS Born: December 16, 1936 Died: December 17, 2016

Joan Mae (Hinz, Burton) Harris, 80, of Lee, IL, passed away on Saturday, December 17th, at Mendota Lutheran Home.

She was born Dec. 16, 1936, in Lincoln County, Merrill, WI, daughter of Paul and Ada (Mandel) Hinz, and was a graduate of East Aurora High School.

She married Wilbur Burton on April 21, 1956 at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Aurora, IL. They had 5 children before moving to Lee, IL in 1969. They joined First Lutheran Church of Lee where she taught Sunday School, served on many committees and was a very active church member.

After raising their children and helping her parents, she worked at Farmer’s Factory Company in Lee. For many years she also volunteered at the NICE Center and served as an Election Judge for Willow Creek Township, Lee County.

In 1986 she married Fred Harris, and after his passing she had a special friend, Lyle Shambrook.

She loved visiting her children, grandchildren and friends, gardening, canning, sewing, quilting and watching western movies.

She is survived by five children, Betty (Bob) Bloyd of Malta, IL, Debra (Roger) Lane of Earlville, IL, Paul (Karla) Burton of Lee, IL, James (Mary Ann) Burton of Kings, IL, Harold (Wanda) Burton of Compton, IL; and 17 Grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her mother

She said they also have been wanting to own a property rather than rent one.

City Manager Brian Gregory said the Planning Commission sent the council a favorable recommendation for approval of the special use permit.

“A brew pub is considered a special use because it’s really a restaurant with an on-site brew pub, meaning it makes some beer on-site, and it will sell the beer that it makes,” he said.

Establishments are considered brew pubs when 40 percent or more of beer produced on-site is sold there in conjunction with a restaurant or bar, according to the proposed ordinance.

The Heinrichs operate the only brew pub in Sycamore after receiving a special use permit in March 2015 to operate the Forge Brewhouse, according to the proposal.

SYCAMORE – The Forge Brewhouse could be moving to downtown Sycamore from its current location on the east side of the city.

The Sycamore City Council is set to vote today on a special use permit that Forge owners James and Lisa Heinrich are seeking to operate their restaurant and on-site brew pub at 327 W. State St. The owners of the Super One Dollar Store that currently occupies the building have an agreement to sell their property to the Heinrichs, according to city documents.

Lisa Heinrich said the Forge Brewhouse opened in June 2015 at 1330 E. State St. on the southeast corner of Route 64 and Airport Road.

“There are multiple factors in our decision to [move],” she said. “Both of us originally wanted to be in downtown Sycamore when we first had the idea.”

Farrakhan sees a new opening for black separatist message

“Racial nationalism of all kinds is on the rise,” said Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The Nation has been largely closed off to outsiders, making it impossible even for those who follow the movement closely to gauge its strength. Neither Farrakhan nor the head minister of the movement’s Mosque Maryam in Chicago, Ishmael Muhammad, responded to interview requests.

Still, Farrakhan and his message of black empowerment clearly have an ongoing impact. The Million Man March he organized in 1995, drawing hundreds of thousands to Washington, remains a cultural touchstone, and hiphop artists praise him in their music.

The Nation has an extensive prison ministry, along with health and social service programs, and the movement’s militia, the Fruit of Islam, provides security at public housing and elsewhere.

That name recognition and high level of organization has left the Nation well situated to take advantage of the

current political moment, including the emergence of Black Lives Matter protests over police shootings of black men.

“We have to turn to each other,” said Nation member Duane Muhammad, 63, a Chicago-area elected official who helps produce videos of Farrakhan.

In Chicago, Nation members stood between police and marchers at a post-Thanksgiving protest last year over the killing of black teenager Laquan McDonald by a white police officer. Marchers blocked traffic and store entrances along the Magnificent Mile shopping district, and Nation members “formed a line and made sure we were OK,” said Ja’Mal Green, a Chicago activist.

Zain Abdullah, a Temple University professor who specializes in Islamic studies, noted the Nation first gained national prominence in 1957 after their stunningly disciplined Harlem protest after police beat Nation member Johnson Hinton. “Before that, the membership was a couple of hundred.

After that, people were coming to the temple to listen and join,” Abdullah said.

CHICAGO – Minister Louis Farrakhan, head of the Nation of Islam, spoke from a podium draped in the red, black and green of the Pan-African flag, a symbol of black pride.

It was the week after Donald Trump won the presidency. The result had delighted a new generation of white supremacists, and Farrakhan was analyzing the political landscape.

In a speech before the State of the Black World Conference in New Jersey, he warned, “The white man is going to push. He’s putting in place the very thing that will limit the freedom of others.” Then he pointed to the crowd, smiled and said, “That’s what you needed,” as motivation to finally separate from whites.

“My message to Mr. Trump: Push it real good,” Farrakhan said, building to a roar that drew applause and cheers. “Push it so good that black people say, ‘I’m outta here. I can’t take it no more.’ ” After a presidential campaign that emboldened white identity politics, the Nation of Islam, a black separatist religious movement, is positioning itself as newly relevant.

Bitter cold front moves across Plains to Midwest, heads east

CHICAGO – Dangerous, record-low temperatures caused cancellations of some holiday festivities in the Plains and Midwest over the weekend before the cold front pushed into the Ohio Valley and the Eastern Seaboard on Sunday.

The National Weather Service forecasts a warming trend to start early in the week in many spots as a quieter weather pattern is expected to develop.

Cook Co. Jail officials find laptop in inmate’s cell

CHICAGO – Cook County Jail officials are trying to figure out how an inmate who was allowed access to a laptop to prepare for his criminal case was able to keep it there long enough to record homemade talk shows on it.

In a news release, the sheriff’s department said 41-year-old Jimmie Smith had the laptop in his cell on Dec. 5 when officers tried to retrieve it. During a confrontation, he allegedly punched an officer in the face. He was charged with aggravated battery.

An investigation revealed that Smith, who is being held without bond on several charges including attempted murder and kidnapping, had recorded a show he called “My Back’s Against the Wall” while in jail. The computer also contained lewd

Gary, Hammond, East Chicago getting $5.6M for blighted homes

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority said the Lake County cities of Gary, Hammond and East Chicago will receive a combined $5.6 million to eliminate blighted homes.

The agency said Gary will receive $4.4 million; East Chicago, $914,000; and Hammond, $268,000. The Blight Elimination Program funds will be drawn from the $221.7 million in federal funds the state has received.

The agency said the three cities were eligible to receive the funds after meeting certain milestones in an initial round of funding.

The funds are not grants but are structured as forgivable loans.

France, Russia reach compromise as Aleppo rescue still uncertain

BEIRUT – France struck a compromise Sunday with Russia on a U.N. resolution that it said would prevent “mass atrocities” in besieged areas of Aleppo, where thousands of trapped civilians and rebel fighters await evacuation in freezing temperatures.

On the ground, prospects for swift evacuations from Aleppo and other besieged areas were thrown into doubt again Sunday after militants burned buses assigned to the rescue operation, although one convoy of five buses was reported to have reached safety from the city late Sunday.

The Aleppo evacuations were to have been part of a wider deal that would simultaneously allow more than 2,000 sick and wounded people to leave two pro-government villages that have been besieged by Syrian rebels. Most villagers are Shiite Muslims, while most rebels are Sunni Muslims.

Six buses that were among those poised to enter the villages of Foua and Kfarya on Sunday were set on fire by unidentified militants, presumably to scuttle any deal.

A video posted online showed armed men near the burning buses as celebratory gunshots rang out. “The buses that came to evacuate the apostates have been burned,” the narrator of the video said. He warned that no “Shiite pigs” would be allowed to leave the towns.

The video could not be verified independently, but was in line with Associated Press report-

ing from the area.

Earlier Sunday, pro-Syrian government TV stations showed dozens of buses on stand-by at a crossing near eastern Aleppo, reportedly poised to resume evacuations from the opposition’s last foothold in the city. Later, a Syrian opposition war monitoring group said the first civilians and fighters to evacuate eastern Aleppo in over 48 hours arrived safely in the countryside from the city. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said shortly before midnight Sunday that government forces allowed five buses to leave Aleppo.

Evacuations were suspended two days earlier amid mutual recriminations after several thousand people had been ferried out of the war zone. Thousands more desperate civilians are believed trapped in the city.

About 2,700 children were evacuated in the first rescue mission earlier this week, but hundreds more “are now waiting in freezing temperatures, close to the front lines,” said Shushan Mebrahtu of the U.N. agency for children, UNICEF. “We are deeply worried.”

The troubled evacuations are throwing into disarray an Aleppo deal that was brokered last week by Syria ally Russia and opposition supporter Turkey.

The deal marked a turning point in the country’s civil war. With the opposition leaving Aleppo, Syrian President Bashar Assad has effectively reasserted his control over Syria’s five largest cities and its Mediterranean coast nearly six years after a national movement to unseat him took hold.

Trump on health care could cost Planned Parenthood

WASHINGTON – One of President-elect Donald Trump’s first, and defining, acts next year could come on Republican legislation to cut off taxpayer money from Planned Parenthood.

Trump sent mixed signals during the campaign about the 100-year-old organization, which provides birth control, abortions and various women’s health services. He said “millions of women are helped by Planned Parenthood,” but he also endorsed efforts to defund it.

Trump once described himself as “very pro-choice.” Now he’s in the anti-abortion camp.

Still, the Republican has been steadfast in calling for repeal of President Barack Obama’s health care law, and the GOP-led Congress is eager to comply.

One of the first pieces of legislation will be a repeal measure that’s paired with cutting off money for Planned Parenthood.

While the GOP may delay the impact of scuttling the law for almost four years, denying Planned Parenthood roughly $400 million in Medicaid funds would take effect immediately.

“We’ve already shown what we believe with respect to funding of Planned Parenthood,” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., told reporters last month. “Our position has not changed.”

Legislation to both repeal the law and cut Planned Parenthood funds for services to low-income women moved through Congress along party lines last year. Obama vetoed it; Trump’s win removes any obstacle.

Cutting off Planned Parenthood from taxpayer money is a long-sought dream of social conservatives, but it’s a loser in the minds of some GOP strategists.

Planned Parenthood is loathed by anti-abortion activists who are the backbone of the GOP coalition. Polls, however, show that the group is favorably viewed by a sizable majority of Americans – 59 percent in a Gallup survey last year, including more than one-third of Republicans.

“Defunding Planned Parenthood as one of their first acts in the New Year would be devastating for millions of families and a huge mistake by Republicans,” said incoming Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. Democrats pledge to defend the group, and they point to the issue of birth control and women’s health as helping them win Senate races in New Hampshire and Nevada this year.

They argue that Trump would be leading off with a political loser. But if he were to have second thoughts and if the Planned Parenthood provision were to be dropped from the health law repeal, then social conservatives probably would erupt.

“They may well be able to succeed,

but the women of America are going to know what that means,” said Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., citing reduced access to services Planned Parenthood clinics provide. “And we’re going to call Republicans on the carpet for that.”

At least one Republican senator, Susan Collins of Maine, may oppose the effort. Collins has defended Planned Parenthood, saying it “provides important family planning, cancer screening, and basic preventive health care services to millions of women across the country.” She voted against the health overhaul repeal last year as a result.

Continued opposition from Collins, which appears likely, would put the repeal measure on a knife’s edge in the Senate, where Republicans will have a 52-48 majority next year. Senate GOP leaders could afford to lose just one other Republican.

Anti-abortion conservatives have long tried to cut Planned Parenthood funds, arguing that reimbursements

for nonabortion services such as gynecological exams help subsidize abortions. Though Planned Parenthood says it performed 324,000 abortions in 2014, the most recent year tallied, the vast majority of women seek out contraception, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, and other services including cancer screenings.

The drive against Planned Parenthood picked up steam in 2015 after an anti-abortion group called the Center for Medical Progress released secretly-recorded videos that it claimed showed Planned Parenthood officials profiting from sales of fetal tissue for medical research.

The measure, however, would strip Planned Parenthood’s Medicaid funding for only a year, a step taken to give time for continued investigations of Planned Parenthood’s activities.

A House panel is still active, but investigations by 13 states have been concluded without charges of wrongdoing.

Planned Parenthood strongly denied the allegations and no wrongdoing was proved, but the group announced in October that it will no longer accept reimbursement for the costs involved in providing fetal tissue to researchers.

The defunding measure would take away roughly $400 million in Medicaid money from the group in the year after enactment, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, and would result in roughly 400,000 women losing access to care.

One factor is that being enrolled in Medicaid doesn’t guarantee access to a doctor, so women denied Medicaid services from Planned Parenthood may not be able to find replacement care. Planned Parenthood says private contributions are way up since the election, but they are not a permanent replacement for federal reimbursements.

Spirit of the season lost on Trump supporters be.

If you’re surprised, you shouldn’t

The West Virginia official who posted racist comments on Facebook in reference to first lady Michelle Obama after Donald Trump’s election – “It will be so refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady back in the White House. I’m tired of seeing a (sic) Ape in heels” – will soon be back at her job as director of the Clay County Development Corp.

Pamela Ramsey Taylor, whose agency provides services to low-income and elderly residents, apparently was never fired, merely suspended.

Clay Mayor Beverly Whaling did resign after she applauded Taylor’s remarks: “Just made my day Pam,” she commented. While both women gave less-than-convincing apologies, they insisted their comments were not racist.

If that isn’t racist, then racism simply doesn’t exist. Bigoted whites have been smearing black people as “gorillas” or “monkeys” or “apes” for centuries, an obvious attempt to demean us as less than human. Pretending otherwise is to deny the nose on your face.

Donald Trump’s America, it seems, is a land of explicit bigotry, of a political incorrectness that looks a lot like

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker racial prejudice, of a white supremacy bursting out of its confines in the civic attic.

Trump’s America is also a land of whiplash-inducing contradictions, of a cognitive dissonance that should cause brain-bleeds.

Trump’s supporters, after all, include the folks who would most likely spend the Christmas season lamenting a “war on Christmas” and insisting that secular elites are ruining it with their greetings of “Happy Holidays.”

As Trump himself said at a Michigan victory rally earlier this month, “We going to start saying ‘Merry Christmas!’ again.”

But what could be less in keeping with the spirit of Christmas – its character of generosity, of love, of all-encompassing humanity – than the narrow-mindedness and contempt for the first lady shown by Taylor and her ilk? Who is really making war on Christmas?

What, as just one more example, is going on with students of the Warrens-

burg (Missouri) School District, who turned their backs on visiting basketball team members, all of whom were black, as they were being introduced before a game?

It seems that the unsportsmanlike behavior of back-turning is a long tradition there, but one student decided to add an extra touch just in case the message they were conveying was lost: He hoisted aloft a Trump-Pence sign.

Don’t worry. We get it. Since the election, a number of Trump’s supporters have giddily let loose with racist rhetoric directed at people of color.

Not only have black and Latino Americans been the targets of hateful tirades from whites who invoke Trump’s name, but so have many Muslims.

The incidents have been too numerous to catalog here, but suffice it to say the intent is clear: To revel in an atmosphere that allows bigots to say out loud what they’ve been thinking for so long.

I’ve been waiting for a chorus of conservative Christian clergy to denounce these verbal (and occasionally physical) assaults as out of keeping with the meaning of Christmas and its message of goodwill to all men (and women).

Apparently, however, they’d rather

aim their ire at Starbucks for its holiday cups that omit the word “Christmas.”

Then there is the inimitable Jerry Falwell Jr., bulwark of the Christian far-right and president of the ultraconservative Liberty University, which was founded by his father.

He has proudly announced that the school will open a state-of-the-art gun range next fall – a popular addition because so many students are ardent advocates of the Second Amendment, he said.

That sent me to once again scour the Gospels, looking for those passages where Jesus promoted violence, championed weaponry or defended warfare. You might find this hard to believe, but I couldn’t find a single utterance to that effect. There was a lot of stuff about peace, love, mercy and forgiveness. Much about turning the other cheek. Much about loving your enemies.

So it turns out that there is a war on Christmas going on. But the shooting didn’t start with the phrase “winter holidays.”

Media, citizens taking a closer look at the ‘meltdown’ in Aleppo The battle for Aleppo is ending in catastrophe, both for the tens of thousands of people who have been besieged there and for the future of Syria.

On Wednesday, Syrian government and Iranian-led Shiite militia forces renewed attacks on the last rebel-held streets of the city, shredding a promise to allow a peaceful evacuation.

According to the United Nations, the pro-government forces have been executing civilians in the street or in their homes – including, on Monday, at least 11 women and 13 children.

Thousands of men have been rounded up and gang-pressed into the Syrian army, or dispatched to an unknown but likely terrible fate.

The United Nations’ term for this nightmare was apt: “A complete meltdown of humanity.”

The meltdown has several dimensions. One is the utter disrespect for the laws of war by the regime of

Bashar Assad and its Russian and Iranian allies.

These forces systematically destroyed hospitals, including pediatric facilities; decimated civilian housing with bunker-buster bombs and chlorine gas; and refused to allow food or humanitarian aid of any kind into the besieged districts of the city.

Aleppo represents “the death of respect for international law and the rules of war,” David Miliband, the former British foreign secretary who now heads the International Rescue Committee, was quoted as saying. It sets a horrific precedent for conflicts in the 21st century.

The fall of Aleppo also means the elimination of any prospect in the foreseeable future for the end of Syria’s war or the waves of refugees and international terrorism it is generating.

The Assad regime, which represents the minority Alawite sect, is unlikely ever to reestablish control

over all of Syria, even with Russian and Iranian help.

Even as it was crushing Aleppo, where Western-backed forces were based, it allowed the Islamic State to recapture the city of Palmyra.

But the regime now will have no incentive to negotiate a peace settlement with the Sunni majority or Kurdish community. The likely result is more years of war and a steady stream of recruits for Sunni terrorist movements that target the West as well as Damascus.

Above all, Aleppo represents a meltdown of the West’s moral and political will – and in particular, a collapse of U.S. leadership.

By refusing to intervene against the Assad regime’s atrocities, or even to enforce the “red line” he declared on the use of chemical weapons, President Barack Obama created a vacuum that was filled by Vladimir Putin and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.

As recently as October, Obama

set aside options drawn up by his advisers to save Aleppo. Instead, he supported the delusional diplomacy of Secretary of State John Kerry, whose endless appeals to Moscow for cease-fires yielded – as Putin no doubt intended – nothing more than a humiliating display of American weakness.

On Tuesday, Obama’s U.N. ambassador, Samantha Power, delivered an impassioned denunciation of the Aleppo carnage, which she said would “join the ranks of those events in world history that define modern evil, that stain our conscience decades later.”

She excoriated the Assad regime, Russia and Iran but offered no acknowledgment that the stain of Aleppo extends also to her, the president and American honor.

Those who will live with the longterm consequences of the Syrian catastrophe are unlikely to be so forgiving.

“I think we’re definitely gaining momentum and starting to get things clicking at the right time,” Tucker said. “We play four games in four days, so it was good to play back-to-back, get the ‘W’ and prepare for the tournament.”

DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said playing two teams as different as Morris and Perspectives was deliberate in order to prepare for defending their Dayton crown.

“They’ve beaten up on some people this year, so we knew it would be a battle,” Biancalana said. “We wanted to simulate playing two different types of teams back to back, ’cause we’re going to see that in our tournament.

“It was important for us to play at completely different speeds. I thought we started off a little rough, made some mental mistakes against some pressure, threw the ball away. Then for the most part I thought we handled the pressure very well. I thought Cole was intelligent in his attacks.”

DeKALB – All of a sudden, the DeKalb boys basketball team gets to defend its home tournament championship with a bit of momentum.

It took the Barbs less than two minutes to take the lead against Chicago Perspectives on Saturday, and they never led by less than eight in the second half of a 69-57 win, their fourth straight, nine days before hosting the Chuck Dayton Classic beginning Dec. 27.

“I felt like we did some good things and had some ups and downs in the game,” said Darvon Sisson, who scored 12 and grabbed eight rebounds for the Barbs. “This team right here, they’re very quick.

They pressed a lot.”

The pressure from the Warriors (7-3) got to the Barbs (6-2) early. They committed eight first-half turnovers, leading to six points for Perspectives. Six of those turnovers came in the first quarter.

After falling behind 2-0, the Barbs took the lead with 6:02 left in the first quarter and never gave it back. A quick 7-0 run by the Barbs – five of the points coming from Michael Mitchell, who finished with 12 – pushed the lead to 11 late in the second quarter. The Warriors got it to 45-37 early in the fourth, but six straight points for DeKalb pushed the lead to double figures. It wouldn’t drop below 10 again.

Big 3rd period wins battle of West leaders

mlazerus@suntimes.com Even now, even after all of these games and all those of road trips and all of those battles won and lost, it sometimes seems surreal to drive to work every day for Scott Darling, Ryan Hartman and Vinnie Hinostroza.

“You’re living in downtown Chicago and you’re playing for the Blackhawks,” Hartman said. “And it’s a blessing every day to be able to contribute and help the team win.”

The heroes of Sunday night’s 4-1 victory over the defending Western Conference champion San Jose Sharks weren’t of the superstar variety. They were of the local variety.

Darling, the Lemont native, made 33 saves after convincing Joel Quenneville to let him start his ninth game in 16 days.

Hartman, the West Dundee kid, scored the game-winning goal in the third period.

Hinostroza, the Bartlett product, set up Hartman’s winner and tacked on a badly needed insurance goal of his own.

Playing their sixth game in 10 days, without their second-leading goal-scorer, in the middle of the dog days of December, it was the Hawks’ youthful locals who stepped up and delivered. And while they’re no longer slack-jawed, starry-eyed kids in the dressing room, it hasn’t stopped being, well, awfully cool.

“We’re just happy to be on the team,” Darling said. “We’re happy to chip in. For all of us, we just want to stay here and play as much as we can.

So we’re happy to be doing our jobs.”

It was entirely reasonable to expect the weary Hawks to lay an egg against a Sharks team that intentionally stayed off of the ice all weekend.

And for much of the game, the Hawks looked as sluggish as you’d expect after getting home early Sunday morning after a bruising victory over the rival Blues.

But they won, anyway, the latest gutsy performance by a team making a habit of pulling out unlikely victories. Whether they’re at their best or not, the Hawks just keep winning.

Tight until the final minutes, the win extended their hot streak to 6-01 – all without Corey Crawford, some without Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook, and Sunday without Artem Anisimov.

“I think we’ve got a great group of players that play the right way,” Quenneville said. “You lose one guy, and somebody will absorb that responsibility, jumping in the lineup. But [it’s] the leadership, as far as playing the right way, knowing the importance of finding a way to keep themselves in games, and getting points in games.”

Trailing 1-0 on Joe Pavelski’s goal 73 seconds into the second, Darling made two big stops to survive an extended Sharks shift in the offensive zone, during which they hit two posts.

Moments later, the Hawks tied the game as Duncan Keith finally got his

first goal of the season, beating Martin Jones clean from the point.

The Hawks took a 2-1 lead at 6:59 of the third when Hinostroza’s extra effort on a 50/50 faceoff nudged the puck to Hartman, who snapped a shot past Jones for his sixth goal of the season, and first in 12 games. Neither Hartman nor Jones quite knew where the puck was.

“I wasn’t actually sure where it went at first,” Hartman said. “But I heard the goal horn, so I think it surprised both of us.”

Hinostroza added an insurance goal with 2:20 left, smartly keeping the puck on a 2-on-1 rather than forcing a pass to Marian Hossa. Then Artemi Panarin (two assists) set up an empty-netter for Patrick Kane in the final minute for the surging Hawks, who have climbed back to the top of the league standings despite their schedule, injuries and youth.

“Our team, all-around, has been playing really well lately,” Hartman said. “It’s nice to contribute.”

As Minnesota waffled, NIU prepared for bowl invitation

As news about a football player boycott at Minnesota broke, Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier quickly realized his Huskies might have a chance to play in the Holiday Bowl.

One problem: NIU was on winter break.

But in less than 24 hours of frantic work, Frazier and NIU coaches knew they had what they needed most to accept a postseason bid on short notice: a motivated team.

With the Huskies having played in San Diego bowl games two of the past three seasons, Frazier knew the logistics would fall into place for a game against Washington State on Dec. 27.

Easy? No. But far from impossible.

“Because we’ve had a relationship with [Holiday Bowl organizers], we felt this was necessary to support the bowl and support our student athletes,” Frazier told The Associated Press on Saturday in a phone interview. “That was a major part of this. This bowl committee, which had been so nice to us, friends to us, that we would get ourselves together and mobilize.”

Not even two days ago, that was in serious doubt.

Frazier began getting text messages and email about what was happening at Minnesota Thursday and immediately knew what that meant. It was time to start making calls.

He informed his president and board of regents. Then he had to get his staff moving. Eight straight bowl appearances by NIU made Frazier’s staff “seasoned veterans” when it came to bowl preparation.

Most of all, Frazier had to talk to coach Rod Carey to determine if NIU had a team that could play in 12 days – in a top second-tier bowl, nonetheless.

“Picture me calling him up at 9, 10 o’clock at night saying, ‘Rod, this is the scenario. Talk to me.’ ” Frazier said, “He took a deep breath and said, ‘Sean, I’ve got to get my guys back, and some of them are training for the pros. Some of them are now on vacation. NIU finished its season the Saturday

after Thanksgiving at 5-7, but having won four of five as it got healthy after early season injuries. NCAA rules allow bowls to select 5-7 teams to fill spots if there are not enough six-win teams.

The teams are selected in order of their latest Academic Progress Rate scores.

NIU was next on the list, but the team hadn’t even met since Nov. 27. Fall commencement was Dec. 11. The players had dispersed.

Carey told Frazier early Friday morning the players were on board.

Most could drive back to campus, but some would need flights. Frazier said it would have cost the university $15,000 to $20,000 to pay for travel expenses.

The first practice likely would have been Monday, Frazier said. The coaches already had started breaking down film of Washington State.

Wanting to play is one thing. Being eligible is another. Frazier said he had compliance staff working on whether players, who now had fall grades to consider, would be academically eligible.

Also, they needed to determine which players with professional aspirations had signed with agents. That would make them ineligible.

“We were in the middle of going through those recertifications as well as those appeal processes to make them

eligible,” Frazier said. “We feel confident we would have ... been able to reverse anything that might have happened.”

Holiday Bowl officials were not commenting publicly, but they were working on backup plans Friday. Frazier assured them the Huskies were good to go if invited.

The Huskies played in the Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium last year and in 2013, a game run by the same group that handles the Holiday Bowl.

Frazier said the plan for NIU was mostly to step into whatever Minnesota had already arranged. The Huskies would have redirected the charter flights Minnesota had lined up to leave from Minneapolis to go out of Rockford.

They would have used the Gophers’ hotel reservations and practice facilities.

As for costs, Frazier said conversations never made it to money. The Holiday Bowl payout to its contracted teams from the Big Ten and Pac-12 was $2.8 million last year. NIU would not have been guaranteed that payout, but Frazier said he is confident all costs would have been covered.

“It would have been great exposure for the Holiday Bowl and NIU,” Frazier said.

3 things that worked Fourth-quarter Barkley: The Bears’ quarterback rallied back from four turnovers to complete 15 of 20 passes in the final quarter for 166 yards and a touchdown, leading the Bears to 17 consecutive points to tie the score.

Special teams: Josh Bellamy downed one Pat O’Donnell punt at the 1-yard line, and another punt of his was returned for only 2 yards. Bellamy also stuck Ty Montgomery on a kickoff return, forcing the Packers to start a drive at the 15-yard line. Connor Barth made both of his field goals.

Red-zone defense: The defense held inside the 20, where the Packers scored touchdowns on only two of five opportunities. Granted, one of those red-zone field goals was the game-winning kick from Mason Crosby, but the Bears never would have been in position to tie if the defense hadn’t made stops near the goal line.

Tackling Ty: A few days after Vic Fangio reminded everyone how bad the Bears defense he inherited was, Packers wideout-turned-running back Ty Montgomery made this ‘D’ look like the old group. He rushed for 162 yards, including a 61-yarder – the longest run the Bears had allowed since 2013.

Protecting the football: The end-of-half interception on a Hail Mary wasn’t a big deal, but the ensuing fumble on a strip-sack and back-to-back interceptions in the third quarter were. The Bears were fortunate to make it a game after four total giveaways and zero takeaways to back it up.

Third-down offense: The Bears were 3 for 8 on third down, including missing on manageable opportunities in the first quarter (third-and-3, third-and-4). The most notable miss came on the final drive, when Micah Hyde broke up a pass to Cameron Meredith, forcing the Bears to settle for a tying field goal.

Adams’ first drop: Packers wideout Davante Adams, who torched the Bears in Lambeau Field, had two drops in the end zone. His first, with 50 seconds left in the first half, kept the Packers from taking the lead before halftime. They settled for a field goal and a 10-10 score.

Paulsen’s hold: The Bears were in business with 1:50 left in the game, trailing by three. They had first-and-goal at the Packers’ 3-yard line, but Logan Paulsen was called for a holding penalty, backing them up. The Bears did have two shots from the 4-yard line but eventually kicked a field goal after an incomplete pass on third-and-goal.

Rodgers to Nelson: A play that seemed oh-so-Packers and oh-so-Bears, symbolizing the rivalry in the past eight years. Facing third-and-11 with 31 seconds left in a tie game, Rodgers launched it to Jordy Nelson behind corner Cre’Von LeBlanc with no safety in sight. The 60-yard play set up the winning field goal, making the Bears’ comeback attempt fall short.

SPORTS BRIEFS Jaguars fire Bradley after 4th-quarter collapse at Texans

The Jacksonville Jaguars fired Gus Bradley on Sunday, ending one of the least successful coaching tenures in NFL history.

Owner Shad Khan announced the decision following a 21-20 loss at Houston, in which the Jaguars (2-12) blew a ninepoint lead in the fourth quarter. Khan considered the move in late October, following a debacle at Tennessee on national television, but opted to keep Bradley for seven more weeks. During that time, Jacksonville lost to backup quarterbacks Tom Savage (Houston), Paxton Lynch (Denver) and Nick Foles (Kansas City).

Bradley went 14-48 in four seasons in Jacksonville, the worst winning percentage (.225) of any NFL coach with at least 60 games.

The Jaguars were supposed to be considerably improved this season, time for Bradley’s always-positive approach to pay off with a much-improved roster.

Khan spent big in free agency for the second straight year and felt he had all the pieces in place for a playoff push.

Even before the free-agent frenzy, Khan said a winning record was “everybody’s reasonable expectation at this point.”

Instead, the Jaguars have lost nine in a row. It’s the longest, single-season losing streak in franchise history.

Minnesota coach speaks for 1st time since player boycott

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota football coach Tracy Claeys doubled down Sunday on his support for players who boycotted practices and threatened to skip a bowl game if 10 teammates suspended after a sexual assault investigation weren’t reinstated.

Speaking publicly for the first time since a standoff between 110 Golden Gophers football players and the administration, Claeys said he understands the players’ frustration with a Title IX investigation that they felt was inherently unfair to teammates who were accused of assaulting a woman at an off-campus dorm in September.

“As kids, they have no problems being held to a higher standard than the university requires and should require,” Claeys said after Minnesota’s practice. “This is all about the due process.”

Claeys also clarified a comment he made on WCCO radio on Sunday morning when he said he was risking his job by supporting the players. The coach said he was just advising his players of possible ramifications during a team meeting on Thursday, before the team made the announcement to boycott.

“I was a sounding board for them and it was their decision,” Claeys said.

Vitamin D supplement may not be necessary Dear Doctor: Should I take large doses of vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis?

Dear Reader: This is an excellent question. Vitamin D appears to be a wonder vitamin in regard to health. For whatever ails you, it seems, vitamin D is the cure.

But that’s not necessarily true.

Vitamin D is so crucial for healthy bones that deficiencies in children lead to the malformed bones seen in rickets.

Because vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, it’s vital for a host of other biological functions as well. In fact, vitamin D acts more like a hormone in that way.

The recommended daily allowance of vitamin D is 600 to 800 units. It can be found in foods fortified with vitamin D – and the numbers of those products seem to be increasing – or from fatty fish or eggs. But the majority of the vitamin D our bodies need begins with UVB light; our bodies use this light to produce the precursors of vitamin D. Adults who are out in the sun regularly and have normal vitamin D levels probably don’t need a vitamin D supplement. A meta-analysis published in the renowned medical journal The Lancet reviewed 24 studies that followed patients who took vitamin D. The research found little change in bone density with supplementation of vitamin D. Some studies found vitamin D reduced the risk of bone fracture – but only when it was combined with calcium.

Calcium on its own has been shown repeatedly to decrease the risk of fractures.

Vitamin D on its own has not been shown to decrease fracture risk.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley ga-doses of vitamin D to their patients, causing very high blood levels of it. But high levels of vitamin D in the bloodstream might actually increase the rate of bone breakdown.

The highest daily intake considered safe by the Institute for Medicine is 4,000 units.

If you are taking vitamin D, have your blood levels checked. For the prevention of osteoporosis, the Institute of Medicine recommends a vitamin D blood level greater than 20 ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter).

The majority of people can achieve this level without supplementation, but if you do supplement, 600 units is more than sufficient.

As for all the other purported health benefits of vitamin D, such as its ability to decrease the risk of cancer and heart attacks, there may be benefit to vitamin D intake, but we’re not sure yet. We need good long-term studies that compare people who take vitamin D daily against those who don’t.

Until then, if you don’t have osteoporosis and you do have sufficient vitamin D levels in your blood, there appears to be little additional benefit to taking a vitamin D supplement.

Over three spades, South should control-bid four clubs, North would control-bid four hearts, and the contract would be either six spades or (if North-South use Roman Key Card Blackwood) perhaps only five spades when South learns a key card (an ace or the spade king) and the spade queen are missing.

In six spades, South should not be influenced by West’s lead into thinking that he has the spade queen. West’s lead is normal after any sensible sequence. The percentage play is to finesse spades through East because declarer can pick up queen-fourth. Win trick two with the diamond queen, cash the spade king, play a spade to the jack and, assuming the finesse wins and West follows suit, draw the last trump and claim.
