Motherhood has softened this Grinch POLL Sorry to say this, but I am a full-fledged Grinch.

I hide it well from my daughter and others so it won’t bring their holiday spirit down, but I truly have no interest in the Christmas season.

I enjoy Halloween,Thanksgiving and other holidays more. Now, my heart is not two sizes too small or anything – I just don’t believe in the magic.

I think it all stemmed from childhood.

There was absolutely nothing magical about growing up poor and in a dysfunctional family. The Christmas season was more of a stressor than anything else.

My older sisters would get upset because they didn’t get the new stylish clothes or gadgets. My mom would get upset because her boyfriend wanted to spend Christmas with his family. And I just could not have cared less.

On Christmas morning, as a child, I wasn’t bright-eyed or bushy-tailed. I would have rather slept through the whole entire day and night.

I also remember just wanting to eat frozen pizza because the dinner was always cold.

One of us would ultimately start an argument over something and we had no holiday traditions besides dysfunction, so what was the point? My Christmas spirit was crushed.

As I grew up I learned to hide my inner Grinch. I would partake in all the festivities I was invited to, but secretly think this is all a big scam.

But little by little, this Grinch has been softened.

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

CHEEKY MAMA Becca Hirst Being a mother has put so many things in perspective. It also has made me a better person. Reflecting on my own Grinchy childhood memories makes me realize that I want to give my daughter a warm holiday season.

So what I plan on doing is making my own holiday traditions.

First, while listening to Christmas music, we will decorate the Christmas tree as a family; otherwise it won’t be decorated at all.

I will use the Elf on the Shelf as Santa Claus’ representative in our house. We will continue to do the awesome ornament exchange on our court.

Finally, I won’t burden myself with making a Christmas dinner of any sort. We will just have appetizers and snacks. This way food won’t be cold and no major cleanup.

I do believe there is hope for this Grinch.

My heart has never been frigid, so I know I have it in me.

Now if we could only fix the frigid cold weather the Christmas season would get even better.

NEW YORK – Stores are pushing deals and incentives such as free shipping for the final week of the holiday shopping season, as new numbers show people are so far spending at a bit of a slower pace than last year.

Retailers pared down their inventories and offered more exclusive merchandise this season in a bid to avoid having to offer big discounts that shoppers have come to expect. But customers seem willing to wait, and so stores are once again counting on last-minute buyers for the final stretch, particularly Saturday, which could be the

busiest day of the year.

“This has really become a game of chicken. In that game of chicken, retailers once again were the ones who flinched,” said Joseph Schmitt, director at the retail consulting firm AlixPartners.

Retail spending is up 2 percent, slightly slower the 2.4 percent gain at this time last year, with the rate of online spending far outpacing buying at physical stores from Oct. 29 through Monday, according to First Data. The firm analyzed online and in-store payments from nearly a million merchants.

The data capture about 40 percent of all card transactions in the U.S. but excludes cash.

Flames spread from carport where van was parked to all three floors of Sycamore mansion

SYCAMORE – Norm Mathisen smelled something funny while doing carpentry work Friday at the historic Charles O. Boynton House at 307 N. Main St. Then he looked outside and saw his van on fire.

“I noticed a glow through the window, opened up the door and the whole engine part of my van was on fire,” he said.

The flames eventually spread

from the carport where Mathisen’s van was parked to all three floors of the landmark Sycamore home. It took firefighters from a dozen local fire departments about three hours to put out the fire.

Mathisen, owner of DeKalbbased Norm’s Custom Hardwood Flooring, said he didn’t notice anything wrong with the van when he returned to the home from his lunch break about 12:30 p.m. He said the fire still was contained to the van when he called 911.

Todd Turner said a 911 call came in at 12:52 p.m., reporting a van on fire in the carport.

“We had our hands full when we first pulled up because that whole back porch was completely involved in fire,” Turner said. “The flames were shooting up past the second floor, and it took a little while because of the snow to drag hose lines to the rear and get water on it.”

Sycamore Madrigals delight audience

news@daily-chronicle.com Sycamore’s First Baptist Church was transformed into a 16th century Royal Court on Friday night, as the Sycamore High School Madrigals entertained the crowd with a comedic play, medieval music and, of course, traditional Christmas carols to celebrate the holiday season.

Madrigal singing and performances, which originated in Italy in the 16th century and later brought to England, are often holiday traditions for high school and theater groups across the country.

This year, Roxanne Torian, one of the cast members, helped write a new story and script. She plays the role of the jester, and said she wanted to bring more of a plot to the show.

“There is a story that the audience can follow along with throughout the night,” said Torian, a junior. “The show has a nicer flow, and it’s different than in previous shows. A lot of parents are excited to see something different this year.”

More than 40 students are involved with Madrigals, most of whom are choir members. All Sycamore High School students are invited to audition for the group, which begins practicing in August. There are numerous roles that are cast, but the Royal Court roles are reserved for the strongest singers, said Drayton Eggleson, choir director at Sycamore High School.

“We have a very diverse and eclectic group of students,” he said. “They’ve really stepped up and have done a fantastic job,” he said. “They’ve been working all year and have dedicated a lot of time.

It’s amazing how these kids can rise to the challenge.”

This is the first year senior Umar Siddiqui has performed with Madrigals. Siddiqui, who is not a member of the school’s choir, said he has always been interested in Madrigals and decided to try it during his last year at Sycamore High School.

“I don’t come from a musical background, but being a part of this musical experience is incredible,” said Siddiqui, who plays the role of the prince in the Royal Court. “I’m very appreciative of the opportunity I’ve been given.

I’m having a lot of fun and it’s great to perform with all my friends.”

Kelsie Kruskol, a senior, has performed in Madrigals for three years.

She is a member of the Royal Court in this year’s show and said she loves being a part of the group.

The evening began with the play, followed by a seven-song concert by the Royal Court, before concluding with a Christmas carol sing-along that included the audience. But unlike previous years, this year’s Madrigal performance featured only desserts and drinks, instead of a full dinner. Eggleson said the group wanted to keep the performance more affordable for families, so guests enjoyed cheesecake and wassail, a traditional medieval hot beverage.

“More people are bringing their kids, and attendance has almost doubled this year,” he said. “I think the cost has a lot to do with it. It’s something new we wanted to try out. But DeKalb County communities value music and the arts. Music is a pretty strong tradition here, and people know that these kids can perform and do very well.”

“It’s a significant time commitment to do Madrigals and to see it come alive is fantastic,” he said. “The show is great, it has a lot of humor and ad-libbing by the students, and it really puts you in the holiday spirit.”

“I loved Madrigals. It’s a holiday tradition for me, and it’s so much fun. I really liked doing it,” she said.

Turner said officials still are investigating the cause of the fire and figuring an estimate of the damage to the home, which is not inhabitable.

Homeowner Dave Waters said he lives alone in the mansion, and he was not home at the time of the fire.

All three of his cats were rescued from the home.

Waters said he has owned the house for about 20 years and had recently talked to a real estate agent about putting it on the market.

The mansion, an 8,000-square-foot Queen Anne-style red brick home, was designed by George O. Garnsey, who built a similar property in DeKalb. The house remained in the family of Charles Boynton for a century. It was built in 1886 and 1887, costing $12,000, or $320,000 adjusting for inflation, and has been a stop on local house walk tours.

The building has undergone several renovations, including a conversion of the entire first floor into an antiques and women’s clothing store in the 1940s and then reverted back when the house was sold in 1987. The basement also was converted into a modern wine cellar, which remained after the property was sold again in 1998, local historian Steve Bigolin said.

“It’s one of the principal landmarks of the Sycamore historic district,” Bigolin said.

Sycamore firefighters were helped by firefighters from several area departments, including DeKalb, Maple Park, Elburn, Kirkland, Hinckley, Sugar Grove, Burlington, Genoa-Kingston and Cortland.

There I was, living in my own home in Creston, IL and managing just fine. I had my good friends, my loving family and a home I enjoyed. Then it happened. One day you wake up and you think to yourself, “Hey. I’m not as young as I used to be.” It kind of sneaks up on you and before you know it you start considering what the options might be as you face those big retirement decisions. My children live out of Charlotte Ber state and I knew that I wanted to stay near my friends, church and my community activities so my search g began. DeKALB – While the filing deadline for the April 4 election is Monday, one mayoral candidate has already received the endorsement of a local political action committee.

The Barb City Action Committee, which has raised more than $12,000 to help elect candidates to public office in DeKalb, is currently backing Jerry Smith for mayor of DeKalb, committee spokesperson Christie Krupp said.

“The endorsement will go to Smith as of right now, as he has experience in business, which our city desperately needs given the financial situation and has experience conducting business in an orderly manner,” Krupp said. “We don’t know how much money we can provide yet, as it depends on what the candidates need and what is at our disposal.”

The Illinois Board of Elections requires political action committees to submit quarterly reports listing all receipts and expenditures. According to the last quarterly report from September, Barb City Action Committee received $12,393 in individual contributions and paid $180 to the DeKalb

Chamber of Commerce for advertising.

Smith is challenging incumbent Mayor John Rey, along with local businessman Michael Embrey and DeKalb County Board member Misty Haji-Sheikh. Other candidates may still enter the race by submitting nominating petitions at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St., by 5 p.m. Monday.

Krupp said the committee is open to meeting with the other mayoral candidates and hearing their stances.

“We are not out to say anything negatively about any other candiJerry Smith dates,” Krupp said.

The committee operates on a platform to elect proven leaders who are competent, courageous and bold to hold public office within the city. Although the committee will be endorsing Smith, members will not be campaigning with any candidate.

Smith said he was delighted to receive the endorsement.

TAILS Humane Society seeks donations

DeKALB – Those who wish to help out TAILS Humane Society during the holiday season have the option of buying an ornament from the shelter’s “Giving Tree.”

Located at 2250 Barber Greene Road, TAILS provides shelter and medical care for more than 2,400 animals each year, according to its website.

Heather Short, development and events manager for TAILS, said paper ornaments on the Giving Tree have descriptions of what certain cash donations would provide to animals at the shelter.

For example, a $25 donation can provide one week of care for an adult cat.

“It’s a nice way to support TAILS in the holiday season,” she said.

Short said people can make a donation on behalf of someone as a Christmas gift by buying one of the ornaments to place in a card.

Donations of supplies are needed at the shelter, as well.

Short said people can go to the shelter’s Amazon Wish List for specific items needed such as training collars.

Genoa man, Marengo woman killed in crash died from blunt force trauma to the head, McHenry County Coroner Anne Majewski said.

Kloess was a seventh-grade teacher at Zion Lutheran School who taught sixth- through eighth-grade language arts and English. She coached varsity girls volleyball, varsity boys volleyball, varsity girls basketball, was an assistant track coach and was a co-leader for a high school youth group, according to the school’s website.

Kloess wrote on her teacher web page that her favorite thing about teaching was getting to work with students and their families.

“I enjoy watching students grow through activities both in and out of school. It’s a blessing to be able to share Jesus and see Him through my students everyday,” she wrote on the website.

The roads were closed for about six hours while police investigated. The crash remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Police Accident Investigation Unit.

MARENGO – A popular Zion Lutheran School teacher and coach from Marengo and a Genoa man were identified as the two drivers killed in a crash Thursday, the coroner’s office said Friday.

Marengo police and fire officials were called to Route 176 and Millstream Road about 3:10 p.m. for the two-vehicle and semitrailer crash, Marengo Fire Protection District Lt. Noel Gaines said. The driver of the semi was uninjured, Gaines said.

Killed in the crash was Matthew J. Lange, 35, of Genoa. He was driving south on Millstream Road and turning onto Route 176 and was pronounced dead at the scene about 3:40 p.m.

Thursday. An autopsy revealed he died from blunt force injuries to the head, spine and abdomen, coroner’s officials said.

“As the world continues to engage and connect on social media, it’s important to the governor to interact directly with people in Illinois to explain how he is working to create jobs, lower property taxes, improve schools and enact term limits,” spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said in a statement.

A July report from the Pew Research Center on Journalism and Media found that 44 percent of U.S. adults said social media was the platform that informed them of events in the 2016 presidential election during a week in January. It’s a strategy that’s been used for a while by governors, state lawmakers and other elected officials in more tech-savvy states and becoming increasingly popular among new-to-politics officeholders, such as Burgum, Illinois Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and, of course, President-elect Donald Trump, who heavily relies on Twitter to share his thoughts.

By making social media platforms the first stop to announce or react to events in a controlled setting, the politicians are bypassing the press – who would call into question assertions made at news conferences – and taking their message to where their audience is most likely to be engaged.

Bird strikes send 2 jets back to Illinois airports

CHICAGO – Two jets each carrying more than 160 passengers made safe emergency landings in northern Illinois after bird strikes.

Allegiant says Flight 1671 from Chicago Rockford International Airport to Punta Gorda, Florida, experienced a bird strike to its No. 1 engine Thursday afternoon and the captain shut down the engine.

It says the aircraft carrying 177 passengers and six members safely returned to Rockford, where passengers deplaned at the gate, and a replacement aircraft was being dispatched to carry them to Punta Gorda.

Gas leak causes home explosion, fire; 2 hurt

HOMER GLEN – Authorities say a home explosion and large fire caused by a natural gas leak injured two people in Homer Glen and prompted the evacuation of area residents.

Will County Emergency Services says the fire burned Thursday afternoon about two blocks from the site of the leak. Authorities say a man and his daughter were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries including burns.

Workers with natural gas utility Nicor worked Thursday night to cap the leak.

The leak’s cause was being investigated.

Chicago FBI ups reward in search for ‘Midday Bandit’

CHICAGO – The FBI is seeking information leading to the arrest of a bank robber called the Midday Bandit and has increased a reward to $25,000.

The increased reward was announced Thursday by Michael J. Anderson, special agent-in-charge of the FBI’s Chicago office.

The Midday Bandit is suspected of carrying out 12 bank robberies in Chicago, Oak Lawn, Aurora and Oak Park, the most recent in August. The robberies occurred between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and date back to 2014.

Witnesses have described the suspect as in his late 30s, about 5-foot-11 and weighing 160 to 175 pounds. He has worn glasses and hats during the robberies.

The Chicago Crime Commission is adding $5,000 to raise the reward to $25,000. Information should be reported to local police or the Chicago FBI.

SIU adminstration, faculty union reach contract

CARBONDALE – Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s administration and faculty union have reached a tentative contract agreement after more than two years of negotiations.

The Southern Illinoisan reports he previous version of the agreement, which helps define roles and responsibilities of faculty and administrators, expired June 30, 2014. Since then, faculty members have been operating under the old contract’s terms.

Faculty Association President Dave Johnson called the negotiations “collegial, professional and productive.”

The state’s budget situation left a significant impact on the agreement, which will be in place until June 30, 2018. The newspaper says it contains no salary increases for the FA’s 500 tenured and tenure-track professors. Wages could be addressed again later, though.

Obama, rapping Putin, says U.S. could strike back on hacks

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama put Russia’s Vladimir Putin on notice Friday that the U.S. could use offensive cyber muscle to retaliate for interference in the U.S. presidential election, his strongest suggestion to date that Putin had been well aware of campaign email hacking.

“Whatever they do to us, we can potentially do to them,” Obama declared.

Caught in the middle of a post-election controversy over Russian hacking, Obama strongly defended his administration’s response, including his refusal before the voting to ascribe motive to the meddling or to discuss now what effect it might have had. U.S. intelligence assessments say it was aimed at least in part on helping Donald Trump defeat Hillary Clinton, and some Democrats say it may well have tipped the results in his favor.

Though Obama avoided criticizing President-elect Trump by name, he called out Republicans who he said fail even now to acknowledge the seriousness of Russia’s involvement in U.S. elections.

Obama expressed bewilderment about GOP lawmakers and voters who now say they approve of Putin, and he said unless that changes the U.S. will be vulnerable to foreign influence.

“Ronald Reagan would roll over in his grave,” Obama said as he closed out the year at a White House news conference. Afterward he left for the family’s annual vacation in Hawaii.

Obama declined to state explicitly that Putin knew about the email hacking that roiled the presidential race, but he left no doubt who he felt was responsible. He said

that “not much happens in Russia without Vladimir Putin” and repeated a U.S. intelligence assessment “that this happened at the highest levels of the Russian government.”

Obama said he confronted Putin in September, telling the former KGB chief to “cut it out.” That was one month before the U.S. publicly pointed the finger at Russia. Suggesting his directive to Putin had been effective, Obama said the U.S. “did not see further tampering” after that date.

The president has promised a “proportional” yet unspecified response to the hacking of the Democratic Party and Clinton’s campaign chairman. Emails stolen during the campaign were released in the final weeks by WikiLeaks. On Friday, CIA Director John Brennan said in a message to employees that the FBI agrees with the CIA’s conclusion that Russia’s goal was to help Trump win.

Trump has dismissed the CIA’s assessment and talk about Russian hacking as “ridiculous,” while arguing both Democrats and the CIA are trying to undermine the legitimacy of his victory. He made no mention of the hacking – or of Obama – during the latest stop on his “thank you” tour in Orlando, Florida, on Friday night.

Clinton has even more directly cited Russian interference. She said Thursday night, “Vladimir Putin himself directed the covert cyberattacks against our electoral system, against our democracy, apparently because he has a personal beef against me.”

The Senate intelligence committee said Friday that it will conduct a bipartisan investigation and hold hearings about what led the intelligence agencies’ finding.

“The committee will follow the intelligence wherever it leads,” said chairman Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C.

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump’s selection of a hard-line pro-Israel advocate as his U.S. ambassador to the Jewish state could signal the end of decades of American support for the establishment of an independent Palestine.

The president-elect’s transition team already has asked the State Department to assess how to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, said one official, underscoring Trump’s commitment to back Israel in ways no American leader has before.

Trump isn’t the first incoming president to promise to move the embassy from Tel Aviv. But his team’s State Department request and comments from aides and advisers suggest he will be the first to charge into what promises to be a diplomatic and political minefield.

The ambassador-designate, David Friedman, has long ties to Israel’s settler movement and has supported stances on the far-right of Israel’s political spectrum, well beyond those of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Orthodox Jewish lawyer from New York has suggested Trump would support Israeli annexation of parts of the West Bank, effectively eliminating the possibility of a Palestinian state. He has served as president of American Friends of Bet El Institutions, which supports a settlement.

“This is about as sharp a break with past policy as I’ve seen in the last 25 years,” said Aaron David Miller, a Mideast adviser under five American presidents of both parties.

Incoming U.S. leaders have often massaged the long-recited policy points on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, such

as when Bill Clinton’s team stopped calling Israeli settlements in east Jerusalem and the West Bank “obstacles to peace” or when George W. Bush eliminated the high-profile position of special Middle East coordinator. Since President Jimmy Carter, however, each has stopped short of building a new embassy in Jerusalem.

Doing so could be perceived as recognizing Israel’s right to the entire city, even though the U.S. has promised for years to help found a Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital. And it would isolate the U.S. from almost the entire international community, including its closest European allies and the Arab states it relies on to fight the Islamic State group and other threats.

“Moving the embassy was always considered too risky, too sensitive, and it was never clear how it really advanced U.S. interests,” Miller said.

Going through with the move, he added, “will feed every jihadi’s wildest dreams” because it will feed into the notion of a Jewish takeover of the city.

Trump advisers have insisted in recent days that the president-elect will follow through on his call for moving the embassy.

“He has made that promise,” Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway told reporters Thursday. “I can guarantee you, just generally, he’s a man who is going to accomplish many things very quickly.”

Palestinian reaction was fierce Friday.

Moving the embassy “would be the end of the peace process as a whole,” chief negotiator Saeb Erekat told reporters in the West Bank, having recently returned from Washington where he held talks with Secretary of State John Kerry.

Aleppo evacuation halted; both sides trade blame

By BASSEM MROUE The Associated Press

BEIRUT – Diplomats sought to salvage the evacuation of eastern Aleppo after it stalled Friday amid recriminations by both sides in Syria’s civil war, raising fears the cease-fire could collapse with thousands still desperate to escape the rebel enclave.

The Aleppo evacuation was suspended after a report of shooting at a crossing point into the enclave. The Syrian government pulled out its buses that since Thursday had been ferrying out people from the ancient city that has suffered under intense bombardment, fierce battles and a prolonged siege.

“The carnage in Syria remains a gaping hole in the global conscience,” U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said. “Aleppo is now a synonym for hell.”

The halt also appeared to be linked to a separate deal to remove thousands of people from the government-held Shiite villages of Foua and Kfarya that are under siege by the rebels. The Syrian government says those evacuations and the one in eastern Aleppo must be done simultaneously, but the rebels say there’s no connection.

The foreign minister of Turkey, a

main backer of the rebels, said he was talking to his counterpart in Iran, a top ally of the Syrian government, to try to resume the evacuation.

A closed emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council was held on the crisis in Aleppo, discussing a French proposal to have independent monitors oversee the evacuation of civilians and fighters. The council meeting ended with diplomats saying they would convene again this weekend.

The cease-fire and evacuation marked the end of the rebels’ most important stronghold in the 5-year-old civil war. The suspension demonstrated the fragility of the cease-fire deal, in which civilians and fighters in the few remaining blocks of the rebel enclave were to be taken to opposition-held territory nearby.

In announcing the suspension, Syrian state TV said rebels were trying to smuggle out captives who had been seized in the enclave after ferocious battles with troops supporting President Bashar Assad.

Several opposition activists said Syrian troops shot and killed four people in one bus, but the incident could not be independently confirmed.

The Lebanon-based pan-Arab Al-Mayadeen TV broadcast images of

the government buses apparently returning evacuees to eastern Aleppo after the road was closed.

Al-Manar TV, the media arm of the Lebanon-based Hezbollah militant group that supports Assad, said Syrian government supporters had closed the road used by evacuees from Aleppo, demanding the wounded from Foua and Kfarya be allowed to leave.

Syrian state media said rebels shelled a road that was supposed to be used by people leaving the villages. But the opposition’s Syrian Observatory

for Human Rights said Hezbollah fighters backed by Assad ally Iran had cut the road to protest a lack of progress in the evacuations.

Buses that arrived at a collection point in the Hama countryside to pick up evacuees from the villages waited for hours to no avail.

Later, two rebel spokesmen privy to the talks said the fighters besieging the villages, including the al-Qaida linked Fatah al-Sham Front, had agreed to evacuate several hundred wounded from the villages.

Hearts go out to fire victims Thumbs-down: To fire damage at one of Sycamore’s historic mansions. The house at 307 N. Main St. has been there since Charles Boynton had it built in the 1880s, but it sustained some serious fire damage Friday afternoon. Thanks to all the area firefighters who braved the cold to extinguish the flames without any injuries to any people – or cats – who lived there. Our hearts go out to anyone whose home and belongings are damaged by fire, and we hope that the owner will not be disheartened, can enjoy the holiday season and that one of Sycamore’s most stately houses can be restored.

Thumbs-up: To progress in the Sycamore Park District’s “Leaf a Legacy” campaign. Park district officials say they have raised almost $587,000 from individual donors, along with a donor who has pledged a matching contribution of up to $300,000. The district’s public fundraising campaign will be near or at 90 percent of its $1 million fundraising goal by years’ end.

Government, taxpayers and local donors all have contributed to the effort to raise $13 million for new public amenities in Sycamore, including a new community center. We’re glad to see the park district making such great progress and hope it continues.

Thumbs-down: To the loss of a sideline legend.

Craig Sager was more than a series loud of jackets, even if that’s what he’s likely to be most remembered for. The Batavia native was reporter for TV’s TNT network who made a name for himself on the sideline of NBA games for 25 years. His death Thursday at 65 after a battle with cancer cost the sports world one of its most colorful characters. Larry Bird said “the league will not be the same without him.” Magic Johnson said, “The NBA family lost a legend who changed the way sideline reporters did their job.”

Thumbs-up: To DeKalb firefighters and teachers teaming up to help children in need. On Wednesday, DeKalb firefighters distributed free, American-made coats to about 50 local children at the fire station at 700 Pine St. The Firefighters Local 1236 partnered with the DeKalb Classroom Teachers Association as part of the International Firefighter Association’s Operation Warm. Teachers identified the students in need, firefighters hosted the giveaway, and Operation Warm provided the coats, which were paid for with proceeds from online donations and last year’s chili cook-off event. We’re glad to see people who already serve the community come together to do more, and hope they’re able to continue the effort in years to come.

Investigating Russian hacking What an extraordinary time for our nation that there would even be a debate over whether Congress should investigate allegations that another nation attempted to influence our presidential election.

After months of warnings from President Barack Obama and the nation’s top spies that Russia sought to make a mess of things, we learn that CIA officials believe that Russian-backed hackers worked to help push Donald Trump to his surprise victory over Hillary Clinton. Perhaps predictably, President-elect Trump says that’s all bunk and that further investigation would be a waste of time. For added measure, the blustery New York billionaire dismissed America’s premiere intelligence agents as hacks in their own right, and politically motivated bumblers at that.

Either way, shouldn’t Americans be granted the opportunity to learn the truth?

We take heart that top elected Republicans are calling for a congressional probe or probes. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McCon-

nell, refreshingly reminding the president-elect that “The Russians are not our friends,” joined House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republicans in calling for a full accounting.

How far we’ve come since the Cold Wars days, when fear of communist plotting raged, to now, when a president-elect not only brushes off expert opinion from the agencies that ought to know, but contemporaneously surrounds himself with men friendly and financially connected to Russia.

(Remember Paul Manafort, the Trump campaign adviser who stepped down, in part because of reports of his ties to pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine?)

That Trump seeks for his secretary of state Rex Tillerson, Exxon Mobil’s chief executive, whom Russian President Vladimir Putin counts as a friend, raises further questions. The massive oil and gas company stands to make billions of dollars should U.S. sanctions against Russia go away under a Trump presidency.

The Senate should ask especially

tough questions of Tillerson while considering his nomination as top diplomat.

The question of Russian meddling doesn’t involve whether the foreign power hacked into voting results, but around the leaks of Democratic National Committee emails, as well as hacked emails from Clinton campaign chief John Podesta. Reports suggest that Russian hackers also collected Republican National Committee emails, but didn’t choose to leak them. Thus, the suspicion that Putin meant to hand Trump an advantage.

Meanwhile, Trump’s pick for national security adviser, Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, echoes the president-elect’s disdain for CIA agents, arguing that the agency has become a political extension of the Obama White House.

Given so much intrigue swirling around the question of Russian interference, we suggest the best course of action is to seek a full accounting of the known facts.

Here’s what a skating rink can tell us My last Fox Business Network TV show airs Friday.

That news pleases some people, such as internet trolls who write that they are happy to be “rid of that noted LIAR and falsifier of news” who produces “hit pieces.” Another wrote, “Hopefully the cancer came back to finish him off.”

To be clear, I’m not ending “Stossel” because I have cancer. I don’t have cancer. I had a small tumor removed, and, best we can tell, it’s gone. I didn’t even have chemo or radiation.

I’m moving on because I want to create a new libertarian internet-based platform with Reason TV and become an educator with the Charles Koch Institute’s new Media and Journalism Fellowship program. I will still make appearances on Fox News.

I had a good time hosting my own show for seven years, trying to find new ways to simplify economics and demonstrate the benefits of free markets.

Unfortunately, economic freedom can be hard to demonstrate. Adam Smith’s “invisible hand” is, well, invisible. How do I explain it on TV? Friedrich Hayek’s phrase “spontaneous order” is clearer but still hard to show.

I was stumped until I read “Rinko-

To the Editor: Several weeks ago, I wrote a letter suggesting four broad policy matters that I hoped would stimulate discussion among residents and would be questions that candidates for local office would answer.

I invited others to expand on my brief list.

The topics raised dealt with creating jobs and expanding the tax base, reacting to changes in the population, making DeKalb a welcoming community for NIU students and responding to both the perception and reality of crime.

In this letter, I’d like to focus on local governance. As before, I would like others to add their concerns to this list and request that candidates for office address these issues by making specific suggestions for action.

1. How should we fund capital projects, such as road repair, vehicle replacement and building modernization?

2. How can we increase cooperation on programs and capital developments with the school district, park district, county, township and sanitary district?

3. What improvements are needed in the city budget process? How should we change the process so that it is easier for citizens to participate and so that their concerns are

Another benefit for administrators is that employees who have been wrongly accused by patients experiencing mental problems can be cleared of wrongdoing. It’s a win-win for all stakeholders: The public can gain more confidence admitting their loved one into these facilities, many of which have earned a bad name in the public eye.

Administrators of nursing homes are less likely to be sued for negligence perpetrated by their staff, and patients – especially those battling Alzheimer’s, which affects 5 million U.S. seniors – can receive better quality care at this time of life when they have become totally dependent.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – By halftime of Sycamore’s 67-53 boys basketball win over Kaneland on Friday night, Keyshawn Stallworth already had a double-double.

He was far from finished.

Stallworth finished 37 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks as the Spartans trailed for less than 24 seconds in the win.

“I wasn’t expecting to drop 37 points,” Stallworth said, “but they were leaving the lane open and I was taking what I got.”

Almost all of Stallworth’s points came in the paint, as the 6-foot-5 senior exploited the undersized Knights (3-4 overall, 1-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East), whose tallest players to get any playing time were 6-2.

Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said he tried to have his Knights play Stallworth from behind, but that quickly proved to be a mistake.

“It took him about five seconds to prove he’s got some really nice back-tothe-basket moves,” Conroy said. “I just tried to change our look in the second half, but I really couldn’t change back after he got rolling, ’cause a lot of what he got in the second half was in transition, and we just didn’t get back and cover.”

Stallworth finished 14 for 16 from the floor and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line as only four Spartans scored – Jack Mizgalski was the only other player in double figures for Sycamore (5-2, 1-1) with 11.

“Our guys did a great job of executing and a great job of finding him,” Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti said.

“He got in a rhythm; he was making his free throws. It was a special night for him and his teammates. Guys were super excited on the bench whenever he scored. They were almost too unselfish at times trying to find him. But we’ll take that.”

Kaneland led by as much as 21-10 in the second quarter, but Kaneland’s pressure finally started to get to the Spartans, who turned over the ball six times in the quarter leading to eight Kaneland points. Kaneland only scored seven points in the first quarter.

“When you’re as small as we are, we know you have to get out there and give all kinds of pressure looks,” Conroy said. “What we were trying to do worked really well, then coach Picolotti made some great adjustments at halftime and our adjustments didn’t work as well.”

Kaneland took the lead for the first time with 23.5 seconds left in the half on a pair of free throws by Dan Franck, one of three Knights in double figures for the game with 10 points. They pushed the lead to 28-25 on a steal and layup by Rhett Epse, who also had 10.

But the Spartans tied it at the buzzer on a 3-pointer by Ethan Heinrich,

and scored the first four of the third quarter and never trailed again.

“We just started throwing the ball to them,” Picolotti said. “They were small, they were a scrappy team, and they wanted to get some easy ones in transition. They did a great job getting us out of our rhythm and making shots and getting back in the game.”

Jake Hed led the Knights with 17 points, while Espe had a team-high five rebounds.

“I really thought the second quarter we showed how we have to play to be successful,” Conroy said. “We’ve got to be able to do that for four quarters.”

If the players on the Minnesota football team follow through on their planned boycott, and Northern Illinois does indeed take the Gophers’ spot in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27 in San Diego, it’s not going to be pretty.

But what would make it bearable for the NIU athletic department is the likely $2.8 million payday that could come with a likely beatdown at the hands of Washington State, a team in the “also receiving votes” category of The Associated Press’ Top 25 poll.

Before we go further, we should point out nothing is official at this point. No one is talking. Minnesota could come to terms with its players regarding its tricky situation. Right now, the team is boycotting the game because of 10 players who were suspended for a sexual assault investigation that produced no charges.

So if they follow through on the boycott, the Huskies are next in line for a bowl berth because they have the highest Academic Progress Rate among the remaining 5-7 teams.

Another team could step in.

We don’t know. Heck, NIU and the Mid-American Conference might not even get their full share after a contract is worked out, for whatever reasons. That’s the problem with hypotheticals.

What’s not hypothetical is the Cougars (8-4) are a way better team than the Huskies (5-7). Better conference (Pac-12), better record. Upsets can happen, but more than likely this would be an ugly game. Even if you want to argue that point, what you can’t argue is that in the three weeks since Washington State’s last game Nov. 25, it has been preparing for a bowl game.

NIU’s last game was Nov. 25, as well. The Huskies have not been preparing for a bowl game. In fact, 14 players already have graduated and probably have scattered into the wind. Getting them back together probably would resemble the scene in “Armageddon” where Bruce Willis’ crew is brought in by the FBI.

The biggest win in the bunch came at Eastern Michigan. The Huskies trailed 21-0 at halftime but stormed back for a 31-24 win Nov. 16.

The walkout by the Gophers stems from 10 players being suspended for the game after a university investigation into a sexual assault allegation.

According to police records, a woman told officers she was drunk when she was sexually assaulted in running back Carlton Djam’s apartment Sept. 2 by several men, including some of the suspended players. She said her sexual contact with two men might have been consensual, but her contact with four of them was not. Several players told police it was consensual, and an investigator who watched a video Djam took of the incident wrote that “she does not appear to be upset by the sexual activity and does not indicate that she wants it to stop ... and the sexual contact appears entirely consensual.”

er in the season for three games after becoming part of the sexual assault investigation. No arrests were made, no charges were filed and a restraining order put in place by the woman was lifted by a judge after a settlement on Nov. 2.

But this week, the school’s Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action recommended suspending those four players and six others, saying they violated school conduct standards. Ray Buford Jr., KiAnte Hardin, Dior Johnson, Tamarion Johnson and Djam also were recommended for expulsion. Antoine Winfield Jr., Kobe McCrary, Seth Green and Mark Williams were recommended for one-year suspensions, and Antonio Shenault was recommended for probation by the EOAA. Last year, each team in the Holiday Bowl received a $2.8 million payout.

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Ugly sweaters led to a beautiful 51-19 win for the DeKalb boys basketball team against Morris on Friday night.

The Barbs opened the game with a 21-0 run, which not only included outscoring Morris 19-0 in the first quarter, but the Crows Nest student section decked out in garish sweaters.

Morris didn’t even get on the board until Matt Shaw sank a free throw nearly two minutes into the second quarter. Overall, the Barbs had 27 takeaways in a dominating team effort on defense.

“We really wanted to come out with a lot of defensive intensity,” Barbs coach Al Biancalana said, “which I think we did a good job of, shutting them out in the first quarter, and being able to take away some actions that we know they like to do. I was a little disappointed in our offensive

effort in the second quarter, but our pressure and ability made for our best defensive effort as a team all season.”

After a stellar first quarter, the Barbs actually were outscored, 9-7, in the second quarter. But they gave up only one Morris field goal in the first half, and led 26-9 at the midpoint.

They continued to run away in the second half. Along with the outstanding defensive effort, the Barbs had 10 points from guard Michael Mitchell, and eight from guard Cole Tucker.

“It was very difficult to simulate their length and quickness in practice,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “And we’ve struggled taking care of the basketball this season, and we gave up way too many turnovers again tonight. We’re embarrassed.

Three years ago we won this conference, and last year was a rough year.

I still don’t think we’re in basketball shape. We’re not playing well together.”

Tyler Spiezio led Morris with four points.

With the loss, Morris drops to 2-4 (0-2 in Northern Illinois Big 12 East) while DeKalb improves to 5-2, with a 3-0 conference record.

A boycott by the Minnesota football team could result in Northern Illinois taking the Golden Gophers’ spot in the Holiday Bowl.

The next team in line to receive a bid is NIU, which finished 5-7 but has the highest Academic Progress Rate among teams with that record.

“We’re monitoring the situation with the Holiday Bowl,” NIU athletic director Sean Frazier said in a statement Friday morning. “We’re proud of the academic success [that] has put us in this position. We’ll have further updates as the situation warrants.”

The game is scheduled for Dec. 27 in San Diego, with Washington State set to face the Gophers.

“We are aware of the player boycott at the University of Minnesota and have been kept apprised on this ongoing situation,” Holiday Bowl Executive Director Mark Neville said in a a statement Friday afternoon. “The Holiday Bowl is one of the nation’s great bowl games and we remain focused on the preparations for the December 27 National Funding Holiday Bowl.”

Bowl officials said there would be no further comment. NIU also refused to comment beyond Frazier’s statement.

The Huskies seemingly had their streak of making eight straight bowl games come to an end this year. They lost their first four games and went 1-6 to start the year. Their first home win didn’t come until Oct. 22 against Buffalo, and that kicked off a stretch of winning four of five games to close the season.

NIU women’s basketball player was the strong offense in the early stages of the game that set the tone for the Huskies. Glenn finished with 24 points after going 8 for 16 from the field and 5 for 5 at the free-throw line. Courtney Woods scored 21 points after going 5 for 10 from 3-point territory.

“We focus a lot on the number of possessions we have in the game,” Woods said. “In the meantime, we need to play tough defense to get more possessions. I think setting the pace for the game early is really important because if we can score around 100 points a game, we’re going to put ourselves in position to wins games.”

The Huskies clamped down on defense in the second half, allowing SIUE

to 37 points to their own 47 points.

“At halftime, we always talk about defense,” NIU coach Lisa Carlsen said.

“We always want to get the most possessions out of the game as we can, and the more stops we get on defense, whether we have to beg, borrow or steal, that’s what we’re going to try and do. I think we gave them too many second-chance opportunities in the first half, so probably the biggest message we talked about at halftime was getting those rebounds.”

SIU-E made itself at home in the paint against NIU and it paid off for them; 50 of its 78 points came from in the lane. The Cougars were led by Lauren White, who had 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting. Donshel Beck complemented her with 15 points.

“They got their fair share of straight-line paths to the basket,” Carlsen said. “That’s something we need to work on and our individual fundamentals. Again, I think the more we try and change defenses up, the more uncomfortable that makes the other team and I think that showed in the second half.”

Record 6 MLB teams to pay luxury tax

NEW YORK – A record six teams are paying baseball’s luxury tax this season, led by the Los Angeles Dodgers at $31.8 million and the New York Yankees at $27.4 million.

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois women’s basketball team’s big 28-point fourth quarter put the Cougars away for good as the Huskies beat Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 97-78, Friday night in DeKalb.

The Huskies (6-3) looked like a team with a mission on offense from the opening tip-off against SIUE (37). The statement-making 28-point fourth quarter eliminated the Cougars’ chances at a comeback, but the 26 points in the second quarter gave NIU a 50-41 lead heading into the locker room.

“That quarter does a lot for our momentum going into the second half,” NIU’s Cassidy Glenn said. “We were a little disappointed in our rebounding and even though we did score 26 points, we know we could’ve scored more. We just wanted to keep it going and that’s kind of something we feed off of.”

LAKE FOREST – Almost a year ago I had the pleasure of working the national radio broadcast for Westwood One as the sideline reporter in Minneapolis for the Seahawks-Vikings NFC wild-card game.

The official temperature for the noon kickoff is recorded as 6 degrees below zero with a wind chill of 25 to 30 degrees below zero, the third-coldest game in NFL history, but I can tell you thermometers mounted on the bleacher walls on both sidelines read 9-below.

But, hey, what are a few degrees here or there when you can’t feel your fingers or toes and your brain feels like it’s buried in a glacier?

Of course, I didn’t have to run around and try to play football or hit anybody, and thank God nobody hit me, but I was on the field and I can tell you this: At least 60 percent to 70 percent of the players and coaches absolutely wanted to be somewhere else.

The best team might not win the Packers-Bears game Sunday at Soldier Field. Talent will matter, but it will be incidental to the team with the most players who actually want to be out there playing football.

Green Bay is 22nd in the NFL in rushing, but that is terribly misleading, as quarterback Aaron Rodgers has provided 295 of their 1,282 rushing yards. And with a bad calf in one leg and shaky hamstring in the other, he’s not likely to be a huge threat on the ground.

The Bears, of course, will be without both inside linebackers Jerrell Freeman and Danny Trevathan, and safety still is a position without real starters, so can Nick Kwiatkoski and John Timu handle converted receiver Ty Montgomery, Christine Michael and Aaron Ripkowski in the Packers’ 22nd-ranked ground game?

Regardless of the conditions, you still have to throw the football, and because of the conditions, the team that does it better will win.

Although the Bears’ young secondary has shown flashes, this is a huge edge for the Packers. Cornerback Tracy Porter most likely will shadow Jordy Nelson all day, but with all the leg and knee issues Porter has, the weather will be an extra concern, and WR Davante Adams could be a bad

Concurrent with Green Bay’s three-game winning streak has been the return to reasonable health of cornerbacks Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins, and although getting Alshon Jeffery back is big, the rest of the Bears’ receiving corps obviously has had trouble hanging onto the ball in reasonable conditions.

If Rodgers’ legs are OK, we know his arm will be fine. These are the conditions we’ve been waiting for – the wind, not the cold – to test the arm talent of Bears QB Matt Barkley.

Finally, there is special teams.

Neither club’s are special, but the Packers’ punt return game has the one clear edge here.

There will be an early tipoff in this one as to the eventual winner: whichever club has more players gathered around the sideline heaters in the first half will be in big trouble.

One person not worried about logistics: NIU athletic director Sean Frazier.

In a tweet Friday night, Frazier seemed to take umbrage at reports that said the logistics would be too much to work out.

“All due respect to reports concerning Bowl difficulties! We have played in 8 straight Bowl games & can manage our way through logistics!” Frazier said in a tweet quoting a Sporting News story that outline the difficulties of NIU taking Minnesota’s spot.

Now, back to outlining the difficulties of NIU taking Minnesota’s spot.

Really, money makes everything better. The Holiday Bowl is one of the most lucrative second-tier bowl games, divvying up an expected $5.9 million among its teams this year. For comparison’s sake, the highest payout for a MAC-affiliated bowl is the $1.5 million expected to be split between Ohio and Troy for the Dollar General Bowl on Dec. 23 in Mobile, Alabama.

Someone has to play Washington State on Dec. 27 in beautiful San Diego, and Holiday Bowl officials sure as

shooting are not going to let the bowl get canceled. I assume that means NIU would get the full share Minnesota would have gotten for stepping in on short notice. They are doing the bowl committee a favor.

Obviously, the Gophers have a powerful incentive to get their players to change their minds. Of course, how do they go about that? They can’t pay the players, so the only other option is to give in to the players’ demands, but that would create a dangerous precedent that could lead to college players actually being paid. And that leads to a whole separate column.

Bowl payouts can be secretive and confusing – and trying to guess at hypotheticals is a fool’s errand.

But the fact of the matter is clear – it makes no sense for the Huskies to go to a bowl game halfway across the country against a team that likely will beat them.

Unless they are getting a big, fat paycheck.

Kane frustrated Bulls go from bad by goal drought to worse at home

mlazerus@suntimes.com ST. LOUIS – The angle was sharp and the odds were long, but this was Patrick Kane, after all. If anyone could score on a one-timer from just inside the right faceoff circle, it’s him. But instead of rearing back and firing off of Artemi Panarin’s cross-ice pass, Kane alertly one-timed a perfect pass to Artem Anisimov, standing on the doorstep for the easy redirect goal.

“I try to be ready for anything with him,” Anisimov said. “He can do unexpected stuff on the ice.”

That first-period power-play goal Thursday night in Brooklyn was one of the prettiest goals of the Blackhawks’ season, and naturally, it involved Kane, the Hawks’ most gifted and most prolific offensive player. His line still is the most productive on the team by a wide margin, and he has a perfectly respectable six assists in eight December games.

But to Kane, this all feels like a big slump. He hasn’t scored a goal in nine games, and he is tied for 10th in the league in scoring (with Panarin and Philadelphia’s Wayne Simmonds) with 29 points in 32 games. He has eight goals this year – eight fewer than Marian Hossa, six fewer than Anisimov, five fewer than Panarin and the same amount as Richard Panik.

Kane is on pace for only 20 goals, and, well, that’s just not good enough.

“Need a few more passes from those guys,” Kane joked of Anisimov and Panarin. “No, it’s a little frustrating.

You always want to be trying to score goals, especially when that’s what you’re counted on to do.”

By any reasonable measure, Kane is having another productive season. But he raised the bar so high last season – with career highs of 46 goals, 60 assists and 106 points – that “very productive” no longer feels sufficient. He won the scoring title and the Hart Trophy as the league MVP. And now that he knows he can be a 40-goal scorer and a 100-point producer, Kane expects to do it every year.

“Yeah, I think so,” he said. “Once you do it, and that production’s not there, it definitely feels like something’s off a little bit. (But) you try not to worry yourself too much about numbers. That’s something I’ve learned in the past, as well. Just focus on the next game, don’t worry about what your numbers are or what they can potentially be. If you

Kane’s dip in production has been offset by his linemates’ surges. Anisimov had 10 goals and six assists at this point last season, and now has 14 goals and 13 assists. Panarin had nine goals at this point last year, and now has 13.

As Panarin’s pair of pretty power-play goals Thursday night showed, the trio has regained its chemistry since being reunited 12 games ago. But Kane still is on the periphery, not in the middle of the action.

Kane clearly is drawing more attention from defenders this season, getting matched up against opponents’ top shutdown lines and top defensive pairings more often. It’s no coincidence that Kane’s drought mostly overlapped with Jonathan Toews’ nine-game absence with a back injury. Opposing coaches no longer had to pick their poison and could load up against Kane.

Toews’ return to the lineup this week should at least help, but his own scoring slump – the Hawks’ captain hasn’t scored since Nov. 6 – likely will keep the focus on Kane.

Nobody’s terribly concerned that Kane has lost his scoring touch, and nobody believes the slump – a “slump” in which he still is averaging almost a point a game – will last much longer.

But Kane is getting antsy.

He can take some solace in how productive his line has been. But he knows what his job is. And it’s not to be a decoy, or to defer. His job is to score goals.

“It’s nice when the line’s producing and you’re on the ice with them,” Kane said. “But you’d like to be a part of it, for sure.”

CHICAGO – Giannis Antetokounmpo had 22 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds, and the Milwaukee Bucks routed the Bulls, 95-69, Friday night for a sweep of their home-and-home series.

It was a nearly identical copy of the Bulls’ 108-97 road loss Thursday night in Milwakee, except there was no closing push this time. Led by Antetokounmpo, the younger and more athletic Bucks had six players score in double figures and shot 46 percent from the field, compared with 30 percent for the weary Bulls.

Dear Doctor: I love to go for long walks and lately have noticed I’m developing pain in my hip joints. I think that’s just part of aging, but my daughter is urging me to try a glucosamine supplement. Can this really be helpful?

Dear Reader: Glucosamine is a compound that naturally is produced within your body.

It plays a key role in building and maintaining healthy cartilage, the connective tissue between your joints. Tough and flexible, cartilage provides a smooth, lubricated surface over which bones easily can move and glide without friction or pain.

But cartilage has a limited ability to repair itself. When it is damaged, or when it wears away over time as we age, the resulting joint pain and stiffness can turn even the simplest tasks into an ordeal. Loss of cartilage, which leads to degeneration of the underlying bone, is what makes osteoarthritis so painful.

The use of glucosamine, a supplement sold in capsule and tablet form, became popular in the 1990s after several best-selling books touted it as a hedge against osteoarthritis.

Several studies had suggested glucosamine has anti-inflammatory properties and might even aid in the regeneration of cartilage. Sales of the dietary supplement spiked.

However, subsequent research has offered conflicting medical data about the benefits of glucosamine. In the largest study thus far, which looked at more than 1,500 adults with osteoarthritis of the knee, glucosamine proved to be no more effective than a placebo. Only the participants who were given acetaminophen for pain reported ongoing relief.

In several other studies, meanwhile, participants with osteoarthritis of the knee and hip who took glucosamine reported reduced pain and swelling, as well as increased range of motion. Little wonder the glucosamine debate is lively and occasionally contentious.
