In time, we should know where DeKalb cut staff I sent a Freedom of Information Act request to the city of DeKalb on Thursday, and one of the things it seeks is city documents that identify the people whose jobs were eliminated this week.

City Manager Anne Marie Gaura, in a conversation with me Wednesday evening, declined to identify the city employees whose jobs were cut this week. The layoffs came in response to the City Council calling for a $100,000 reduction in personnel spending in the budget for next year.

I was pleased that some readers noticed the information was withheld. It reaffirmed that others share my belief about the importance of open government.

One reader wrote to ask me if I had pressed Gaura on her refusal to release the information.

I did not. There was no point.

Gaura is an experienced public administrator. She knows as well as anyone that the information can’t be kept from public view indefinitely.

But reporters aren’t judges. Sure, both can hold people in contempt, but when a judge does, they can fine you or put you behind bars.

I did tell Gaura that we would seek the information through FOIA. She said she understood we might do that.

Then we moved on.

I’m often the first person upset when public information is not disclosed. In this case, to paraphrase comedy legend Chris Rock, I’m not saying I agree with not identifying people whose jobs were cut … but I understand.

Gaura didn’t keep it secret that there had been layoffs in response to the council’s decision.

She just declined to name the people – who pre-

Not saying I agree, but I understand.

When people agree to be public employees paid with public funds, they accept a reduced expectation of privacy. Their salary, when they’re hired, when they leave, it all becomes a matter of public record.

But I’ve yet to meet someone who enjoys laying people off. The last thing most people want to do is talk about it publicly. Yes, these are matters of public record, but there are people behind them, too, people who are likely going through a rough time just now.

Good government requires openness and transparency. Usually, reporters can get most of the information they seek from government without the use of FOIA. But other times, everyone seems to feel better when we invoke it. Then releasing information becomes a matter of duty rather than of preference.

So be it. I expect that we will receive the information requested from the city in a timely manner, and when we do, we will publish it.

WORKERS FIND OLD HUMAN SKULL ON GROUNDS OF CAPE COD MUSEUM

CHATHAM, Mass. – A Cape Cod museum dedicated to local history said workers clearing leaves on its property found a human skull that is believed to be more than 100 years old.

The Cape Cod Times reported the skull was discovered last week at Atwood House Museum in Chatham.

The museum is in a house that was built in the early 1750s and sits on a 30-acre lot. Eight generations of Atwoods lived there. Jeanloz said it was not uncommon at the time for burial grounds to be on family property.

A spokesman for the chief medical examiner’s office said its anthropologist is examining the skull.

Jury deliberates 3 hours before acquitting former NIU officer in rape case

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Andrew Rifkin broke down in tears Thursday after a DeKalb County jury acquitted him of rape.

A case that took more than five years to bring to trial ended after only three hours of deliberation by a jury of four women and eight men.

“I’m starting over my life,” Rifkin, 28, of Northbrook said outside the courtroom. “I’ve lost my life for the last five years.”

Rifkin said he’s started his own business and has had a girlfriend for the past three years. He said he hoped to start fresh five years after he was fired from his job as a Northern Illinois University police officer and charged with raping a student in October 2011.

Rifkin thanked his family for their support. The past five years have been “torture” for his family, he said.

He also praised his attorney, Bruce Brandwein. He declined to comment about the NIU police department, which was criticized by both the defense and the prosecution during the three-day trial.

He said the hardest part of driving to Sycamore for monthly court appearances every month for about five years was that he was innocent.

“I knew in my heart that I’d committed no crime,” he said.

In his closing argument, Brandwein said Rifkin rightfully was fired from NIU for having a relationship with a student, but wasn’t guilty of a crime.

“My client hurt the feelings of this young lady,” he said. “This young lady was hurt. She made it clear to her two roommates that she was dating a police officer. She was happy. He didn’t feel the same way she felt. Realizing he was going to lose his job if he got caught, he cut it off.”

He said the woman only decided to report the incident two weeks after the crime because she was jealous after seeing Rifkin with other students and angry because he wouldn’t return her text messages.

Brandwein said the woman’s behavior after the incident was evidence that the sex was consensual.

“The evidence shows it was a consensual act,” he said.

“Who’s conning who here? I’m getting angry. This is serious business. This never happened the way [the woman] said it did,” Brandwein said. “The police department, they are horrible for what they did here. Just horrible. They hid evidence, they lied.

They plain and simple lied.”

Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert ruled in 2013 that NIU police, led by thenchief Don Grady, had intentionally concealed two witness statements that would have helped Rifkin’s defense.

The jury was told of the police misconduct during the trial before testimony from an NIU police officer.

In her closing argument, First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein acknowledged the flawed police investigation. She said victims deserved better.

Agreement ends Grady’s civil rights lawsuit against NIU, former administrators

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Former Northern Illinois University Police Chief Donald Grady has agreed to settle his federal civil-rights lawsuit against the university and several current and former administrators for just more than $1 million.

As part of the settlement, which was approved by the board Thursday without dissent, Grady’s firing from the university, which took effect in February 2013, will be rescinded, and Grady will resign voluntarily, his attorney, Michael Fox, said.

Grady, 63, led the NIU force from 2001 to 2012, when he was placed on leave.

“While Dr. Grady has maintained that his claims were brought in good faith, and NIU and the individual defendants have denied any wrongdoing, university officials and Dr. Grady determined that it is in their best interest to move past their differences,” Fox said.

The university’s insurance carrier will pay $1 million of the settlement, while NIU will pay $25,000, according to the settlement agreement. Grady’s attorneys will receive $575,000 of the settlement, while Grady will receive $425,000 from NIU’s insurer, along with $25,000 from the university, according to settlement documents.

In February 2014, Grady sued the NIU Board of Trustees, former President John Peters, former Director of Police and Public Safety Bill Nicklas and several other officials. He sought an apology, back pay, and to be reinstated as police chief.

In his tenure as the head of the NIU

force, Grady was widely praised for his response to the on-campus shooting in 2008 in which five students were killed and 17 were injured. However, he also developed a reputation as an intimidating figure who isolated the NIU force from other local police departments.

County Board member Haji-Sheikh joins race for DeKalb mayor

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – DeKalb County Board member Misty Haji-Sheikh has become the fourth person to enter the DeKalb mayoral race for the 2017 consolidated election.

She filed her petition Thursday.

Haji-Sheikh joins incumbent Mayor John Rey, local businessman Michael Embrey and former executive director of the DeKalb County Community Foundation Jerry Smith in the April election.

“The mayor has not been clear and transparent,” Haji-Sheikh said. “I think I provide something that none of the

other candidates do, and I am someone that’s giving the voters options and has the full capabilities of being the mayor.”

She currently serves on several county committees and is the vice president of the Regional Planning Commission, which is composed of mayors, city managers and city planners of all of the townships of DeKalb County.

Regarding crime in DeKalb, Haji-Sheikh said police should look to other municipalities to figure out how to better combat it.

“We are a university town and also near the major city of Chicago and some crime comes from the areas outside the city,” Haji-Sheikh said. “We have to work with other policing departments

outside the city so that we are in coordination when it comes to dealing with crime.”

Haji-Sheikh lives in DeKalb with her husband, Michael. They have raised two kids, both of whom are now attending college.

In addition to the four candidates in the mayoral race, Ward 2 Alderman Bill Finucane, Ward 4 Alderman Bob Snow and Ward 7 Alderman Tony Faivre have all filed petitions to run for re-election.

Former DeKalb School District 428 Board President Mike Verbic also filed to run as alderman in Ward 6.

The city clerk position also is up for re-election, which is a part-time office.

As of Wednesday afternoon, no additional candidates have filed petitions for the six open positions in the city of DeKalb.

In Sycamore, two more people have filed petitions for open city offices since Monday, joining the three candidates filing for mayor, the four filing for city clerk and the two aldermen filing to keep their seats.

Incumbent Ward 3 Alderman Steve Braser filed Tuesday to keep his position and James Bisceglie filed Wednesday for the Ward 4 seat. They are the first two candidates to file for their respective wards.

DeKALB – Police are seeking information on an attempted theft earlier this week and a burglary committed last month at a jewelry store, both in DeKalb.

About 2:30 p.m. Monday, a man and woman entered Becky Beck’s Jewelry on Hillcrest Drive and attempted to steal jewelry when the clerk wasn’t looking, according to a news release from DeKalb County Crime Stoppers.

The man was described as being about 6 feet tall, thin, wearing sunglasses and having a teardrop tattoo on his face. No additional information on the woman was provided.

Gibble said groundbreaking for the community center, splash pad, dog park and sled hill is set to begin in April.

If all goes as planned, the community center and splash pad should be completed in the summer of 2018, followed by the dog park in fall and sled hill in winter, he said.

The Brian Bemis family of Brian Bemis Automotive Group in Sycamore was given naming rights to the new dog park after a $100,000 donation to Leaf a Legacy.

The Bethany Animal Hospital also made a contribution of $6,500 for a shade feature to go in the dog park, and a couple of other families have been considering donations for naming options as well, Gibble said.

The district also plans to pay for the improvements by securing $3 million in grant funds and through $9 million in property taxes, which voters approved via a referendum in November 2014.

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Park District is looking to raise another $13,500 toward its Leaf a Legacy campaign by the end of the month to maximize the amount an anonymous donor has pledged to match.

District Executive Director Dan Gibble said the district raised $586,500 of its $1 million goal, and the donor pledged to match 50 cents for every dollar up to $300,000. If the district reaches $600,000 by Dec. 31, it will receive the full $300,000 match, which would bring the total to $900,000.

“When I came to work here five years ago, the board told me this was a very giving community, and they certainly have proved that,” Gibble said.

The Leaf a Legacy campaign will partially fund the district’s Action 2020 plans, which include a new community center, splash pad, dog park, sled hill, golf course irrigation, trail connections and sports complex improvements.

Continued from page 4 In November 2012, NIU police were chastised by Judge Robbin Stuckert for failing to turn over witness statements that could have aided in the defense of Andrew Rifkin, a former NIU officer accused of the rape of a student in October 2011.

The witnesses, two students who knew the victim, spoke to Grady, and administrators reasoned he knew or should have known that their statements were not turned over to prosecutors. Former NIU Director of Police and Public Safety Bill Nick- Donald las, who terminated Grady Grady’s employment, also noted that Grady took no disciplinary action against other officers after the misconduct came to light.

“I did talk to them,” Grady said in court in 2012. “Some people think that might be as stern as a termination.”

In court Thursday, Rifkin’s defense attorney Bruce Brandwein characterized the NIU police investigation in the case as an outright fraud, while prosecutors acknowledged that it was flawed. Others have said that NIU police never should have investigated

one of their own officers.

About a month after Grady was fired, FBI agents seized several years’ worth of documents from the NIU Police and Public Safety building in an all-day search. Grady and former NIU Executive Vice President Eddie Williams were the only two people named in the federal search warrant.

Federal agencies said in March 2016 that their investigation still is ongoing; university officials and Fox both said they understood it to be over. No one from the FBI has ever publicly said what they were looking for and no charges have been filed.

The rescinding of Grady’s termination, and instead allowing him to resign, will ensure that Grady qualifies for the Illinois Retired Officer Concealed Carry program. NIU officials have agreed to certify Grady as “retired” and “in good standing,” the settlement states.

Retired officers in the program are exempt from some restrictions that apply to other citizens who carry concealed weapons.

“This agreement ends the current litigation,” both Grady and NIU said in a joint statement, “and allows both Dr. Grady and the University to, instead, dedicate their time, attention and resources towards more beneficial pursuits.”

The 24-year-old Matteson woman who accused Rifkin of sexual assault left the courtroom in tears after the verdict was read. She was taken by representatives of the state’s attorney’s office to a conference room and later

escorted away through a private hallway.

Klein declined to comment immediately after the verdict; she went to talk with the woman.

Jurors leaving the courthouse shortly after the verdict declined to comment on how they reached the decision.

Clay Campbell, the former DeKalb County state’s attorney who dismissed the case after the police misconduct came to light in 2012, said the outcome “was the right result.”

Judge William Brady presided over the trial.

The district’s Good Tymes Revival party in September marked the start of the public phase of Leaf a Legacy, and park board members have been reaching out for private donations since spring 2015.

Park Board President Ted Strack said he is optimistic that the community center ground breaking will encourage more donations to come through in the spring, but right now the key is to reach $600,000 in the next couple of weeks.

“At this point, any dollars will help us,” he said.

Strack said the success of Leaf a Legacy up to this point speaks to the community’s generosity.

“I thought [$1 million] was a stretch at first, but we’re going to make it,” he said.

“I am not asking you to believe a single thing that any current or former NIU police officers testified to from that witness stand that isn’t corroborated by something you saw with your own eyes or heard with your own ears,” she said. “Ordinarily, at this point in the case, when I get to stand up and give my closing arguments, I get to talk to the jury about how, no matter what the verdict ends up being, we as citizens of DeKalb County, can be proud of the good work the police officers did in the investigation. I cannot say that in this case.”

In light of the tainted investigation, Klein said the “easy thing to do” would have been to walk away from the case.

“Any person who claims to be the victim of a sexual assault deserves better,” she said. “They deserve, [the woman] deserves, a proper case investigation. ... Because as difficult and uncomfortable as it is to prosecute a case with a flawed investigation, it’s not nearly as difficult as surviving a rape.”

Klein also told the jury that people lie to get out of trouble, not to get into trouble. She pointed to Rifkin’s statements to police. On the stand, he admitted the first statement he made was a lie. He said he lied in hopes of getting his job back. He said he never read a second statement that he signed, a claim that Klein called “fantastical” coming from a police academy graduate. She also noted that video of the police interview showed Rifkin

Prosecutor: Gang killings warned ‘Don’t snitch’

CHICAGO – Federal prosecutors on Thursday told jurors at the largest street-gang trial in recent Chicago history that the Hobos gang lived by the motto, “the earth is our turf,” saying the credo required the killing of perceived enemies such as one former gang associate who was poised to testify against them.

Government attorneys spoke as closing arguments began in the racketeering conspiracy trial of purported Hobos boss Gregory “Bowlegs” Chester and five of his alleged lieutenants, saying the Hobos intentionally fostered a reputation for brutality to maintain their criminal empire. “ ‘The earth is our turf’... (were) words these six defendants lived by,”

prosecutor Timothy Storino said. “For over nearly a decade, the Hobos left havoc on their earth – the South Side of Chicago ... and they murdered people who got in their way.”

The three-month-old trial in U.S. District Court in Chicago is drawing to close as a particular deadly year ends in Chicago with more than 700 homicides recorded since January. The Hobos had fewer members than other Chicago gangs, but were well organized, well-armed and, Storino said, quick to kill.

He said defendant and alleged Hobos hitman Paris Poe killed gang member-turned-informant Keith Daniels in 2013, days after Chester’s arrest and after Daniels testified against the Hobos to a grand jury in the same federal courthouse in Chicago. Poe allegedly stood over Daniels and shot him re-

peatedly with a .45-caliber pistol as his two small stepchildren screamed nearby.

“This was a murder to send a message, like other Hobos murders: You don’t snitch on the Hobos and think you’ll get away with it,” another prosecutor, Derek Owens, told jurors later Thursday.

The indictment links the defendants to nine murders and multiple heists, including the robbery at gunpoint of then-NBA player Bobby Simmons’ $200,000 diamond chain.

Their murders were often brazen, with many done in broad daylight, Storino said, including a drive-by shooting that killed two rival gang members outside a funeral home.

Six defense lawyers also will address jurors during closing arguments that are expected to last at least four days.

Illinois colleges face grant decision in budget uncertainty

SPRINGFIELD – Colleges and universities are again deciding whether to front grant money to low-income students who are supposed to be receiving state aid, as Illinois’ state budget remains uncertain.

A survey recently released by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission suggests some schools that covered grants in the fall aren’t guaranteeing to this spring, The Southern Illinoisan newspaper reported. The commission administers the grants through the Monetary Award Program.

“It is important to note that institutions that are crediting student accounts for MAP or listing the award as pending are doing so with the expectation that they will receive payment for MAP from the state,” the commission said.

Of the 96 colleges and universities that responded to the survey, 53 percent said they’d guarantee money for the spring semester, down from 60 percent in the fall.

More than 35 schools eligible to receive the grants didn’t respond to the survey.

And only two-thirds of the public universities that covered grants in the fall are committed to covering them in the spring, according to the survey.

Chester testified during the trial, telling jurors the Hobos gang didn’t even exist despite his full-arm tattoo with “Hobo” on it. Chester, born with a rare bone disease that badly deformed his legs, also scoffed at the idea someone with such a disability could rise to the top of a Chicago gang.

Storino disputed Chester’s claims.

“The way he led the Hobos was not with his legs but with his head,” Storino said. “This guy is smart as hell.”

And he added about the existence of the gang: “The Hobos are real. They’re sitting right here.”

The fear prosecutors said the Hobos instilled was even on display at the trial. One witness refused to speak against the gang, telling the judge, “I choose not to testify for the sake of me and my family.” He was held in contempt and given a 60-day sentence.

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed legislation ensuring that people released from prison receive a valid state identification card before departing.

The Republican said Thursday the measure will reduce recidivism. He said offenders will face fewer problems back in the community when they get out of the Departments of Corrections or Juvenile Justice.

“To combat recidivism we need to remove some of the hurdles offenders face when they are released from a detention facility and begin to re-integrate into society,” Rauner said in a statement. “This will

help us end the cycle of recidivism and give former offenders more tools necessary to be successful and thrive and gets Illinois one step closer to safely reducing Illinois’ prison population by 25 percent before 2025.”

The legislation sprung from one of the recommendations made by the Illinois State Commission on Criminal Justice and Sentencing Reform charged with Rauner to reduce the prison population by the middle of the next decade.

CHICAGO – Regulators on Wednesday suspended the license of a Chicago psychiatrist accused of overprescribing narcotics and sexually molesting mentally ill patients.

Dr. Josip Pasic engaged in sexual conduct with mentally ill patients to whom he also prescribed opioid painkillers and other drugs, according to an emergency order signed by Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation’s acting director, Jessica Baer.

One patient, a recovering drug addict, told investigators he endured the doctor touching his groin because he needed his medication and it was difficult to find a doctor who accepts Medicaid. Another patient with bipolar disorder reported that Pasic groped him and gave him $80 when the patient threatened to report it.

Dylann Roof convicted in S.C. church slaughter

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Dylann Roof was convicted Thursday in the chilling slaughter of nine black church members who had welcomed him to their Bible study, a devastating crime in a country that was already deeply embroiled in racial tension.

The same federal jury that found Roof guilty of all 33 counts will reconvene next month to hear more testimony and weigh whether to sentence him to death. As the verdict was read, Roof just stared ahead, much as Dylann Roof he did the entire trial. Family members of victims held hands and squeezed one another’s arms. One woman nodded her head every time the clerk said “guilty.”

Roof, 22, told FBI agents he wanted to bring back segregation or perhaps start a race war with the slayings. Instead, the single biggest change to emerge from the June 17, 2015, killings was the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse, where it had flown for 50 years over the Capitol or on the grounds. Roof appeared with the flag in several photos in a racist manifesto.

The shooting happened just months after Walter Scott, an unarmed black man, was killed by white police officer Michael Slager when he fled a traffic stop in North Charleston. Police shootings around the county have heightened tensions between black communities and the law enforcement agencies that patrol them, sometimes resulting in protests and riots.

In Roof’s confession to the FBI, the gunman said he carried out the killings after researching “black on white crime” on the internet. He

said he chose a church because that setting posed little danger to him.

Roof told the judge again Thursday that he wanted to act as his own attorney during the penalty phase. He also will face a death penalty trial in state court on nine murder charges.

In closing arguments, Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan Williams mocked Roof for calling himself brave in his hate-filled journal and during his confession, saying the real bravery came from the victims who tried to stop him as he fired 77 bullets at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church.

“Those people couldn’t see the hatred in his heart any more than they could see the .45-caliber handgun and the eight magazines concealed around his waist,” Williams said.

Defense lawyer David Bruck conceded Roof committed the slayings, but he asked jurors to look into his head and see what caused him to become so full of hatred, calling him a suicidal loner who never grasped the gravity of what he did.

The defense put up no witnesses during the seven-day trial. They tried to present evidence about his mental state, but the judge ruled that it did not have anything to do with Roof’s guilt or innocence. Roof was just imitating what he saw on the internet and believed he had to give his life to “a fight to the death between white people and black people that only he” could see and act on, Bruck said.

The prosecutor’s 50-minute closing argument filled the court with tension. At times, the prosecutor raised his voice, saying Roof was a cold, calculated killer. Some family members of victims dabbed their eyes with tissues, and jurors appeared emotional when Williams, after apologizing to them, showed crime scene photos of each person killed alongside a small picture of them while alive.

And it is hitting closer to home. St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly said the impasse is destroying the Redeploy Illinois program, which puts troubled teens in school and in job training, rather than in prison.

He said Redeploy Illinois is “20 times less costly than putting a juvenile into the Department of Juvenile Justice. That’s a real number.”

Kids idle on the street rather than in school or in programs can lead to trouble. It can lead to death.

So why doesn’t the guy who lives in the shadow of Midway Airport do something to maybe help those kids? Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan either doesn’t bother to show up or refuses to participate in budget negotiations.

And the list of idle kids may soon grow exponentially as schools run out of money.

The veto session is over, and lawmakers are gone, likely until Jan. 9. The temporary budget expires Dec. 31. Christmas break could get very, very long for some schools that can’t run without their state money.

So will they get down to business on Jan. 9?

State Sen. Christine Radogno, the Republican leader, said she thinks Madigan is trying to create wreckage that he thinks will put more Democrats in the Legislature and governor’s mansion in 2018.

Well if that is the strategy, doesn’t he think there’s wreckage enough? Does he need more bodies, more wrecked young lives or maybe another billion or two in backlogged bills atop the current $10.7 billion?

No political gain or game is worth having blood on your hands.

If Richard Nixon could go to China, can Rex Tillerson save Paris? It is but one of many questions, some more answerable than others, about President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for secretary of state.

Unlike the president-elect, Tillerson, the CEO of Exxon Mobil Corp., supports both the global climate-change accord forged in Paris last year and a carbon tax. So the main question for Tillerson may be this: How will he manage his relationship with his new boss?

Tillerson should feel free to consult with his fellow nominees, many of whom are no doubt pondering the same question. But he also should be prepared to explain how he plans to translate his specific views and experience into policy.

Tillerson deserves credit for changing Exxon’s position on the greatest threat to the planet, and one with great potential to be a destabilizing force. Managing global efforts to combat climate change will be one of the secretary of state’s main tasks.

Tillerson also could play a key role in strengthening America’s energy security. This challenge goes beyond promoting exports of U.S. oil and natural gas and building pipelines such as Keystone. As Tillerson has stressed, it also entails strong support for the multilateral trading system that underpins the global energy market – something that Trump’s bluster about a trade war with emerging markets would jeopardize.

Members of Congress have rightly raised strong concerns about Tillerson’s ties to Russia, where Exxon Mobil has huge interests. A medal from Vladimir Putin is itself not grounds for disqualification. But Tillerson’s views on how best to contain the strategic threat posed by Russia could be. Dismantling the sanctions imposed by Europe and the U.S. in the face of Russian subversion and aggression would signal U.S. weakness and undermine the alliances that Tillerson says he wants to strengthen.

As the head of a company with operations in at least 50

countries, Tillerson has practiced the commercial diplomacy that the State Department has long preached but seldom achieved. In the many repressive and corrupt petrocracies with which Exxon Mobil has done business, it has a strong safety record and has been scrupulous in its business dealings.

Against all this are questions about his views on Russia, his lack of any political or government experience, the importance of separating corporate and national interests – and how his views mesh with his president’s.

Some of these same doubts were raised about George Shultz, President Ronald Reagan’s pick for secretary of state. The former president of Bechtel Group went on to become one of the most admired U.S. diplomats of the Cold War years, channeling the president’s most constructive impulses and providing steady leadership to America’s diplomatic corps. If Tillerson wants to be confirmed, he should pledge to follow Shultz’s example.

On Thursday, Trump was supposed to announce his scheme for removing conflicts of interest, but his announcement was “delayed.” Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin, D-Maryland, who has led a spirited crusade against Trump’s ethics-free transition, put out a statement that said: “I’m deeply disappointed by this delay. The further President-elect Trump kicks the can down the road, the closer he lurches toward a Constitutional crisis that we want him to avoid.”

In any event, Trump may have overestimated the public’s indulgence.

According to a Fox News poll, 52 percent of registered voters are very or somewhat concerned that Trump will put his business interests above the country’s interests, including a plurality of independent voters. That’s astonishing.

A majority of the country already thinks Trump is corrupt. By a 53 percent to 43 percent majority, voters think Trump will not reduce corruption.

(More than 60 percent also said he doesn’t think before he tweets and that he uses Twitter inappropriately. He’s also losing on the Russia issue, with 50

percent saying he’s too accommodating and 29 percent saying he’s about right or too confrontational. By a 67 percent to 28 percent margin, voters say they have confidence in the CIA).

Likewise, in a just-released CBS poll, 60 percent of Americans think he needs to release his taxes and 59 percent (61 percent of independents) think his businesses create a conflict of interest.

Republicans and Democrats alike may have underestimated the potency of the issue. This was, after all, a change election, in which voters were enraged at the political class. If Trump turns out to be as bad or even worse as professional pols who enrich themselves – and Republicans play interference for him – the bottom may fall out of his and their support. In 2018, the Democrats will then be able to run on a “Crooked Republicans” message meant to undercut his support with the people most angry about self-dealing.

Another day, another abortion restriction The tan business envelope is postmarked Jan. 31, 1957. It is addressed to “MISS JANEY BEBOUT,” arriving via airmail from Annapolis, Maryland. Not to her home but to the house of a sympathetic aunt who could keep a secret, one town away in Ashtabula, Ohio.

The sole content of the envelope is one sheet of paper, crackly with age and separating at the folds. It is a form letter from the Maryland secretary of state’s office detailing requirements for marriage.

The letter reads, in part: “IT SHALL BE UNLAWFUL WITHIN THIS STATE FOR ANY FEMALE BELOW THE AGE OF SIXTEEN YEARS OR FOR ANY MALE BELOW THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN YEARS TO MARRY. ... EXCEPT ON THE CERTIFICATE OF A LICENSED PHYSICIAN, WHICH SHALL BE PRESENTED FOR THE APPLICATION FOR THE MARRIAGE LICENSE, TO THE EFFECT THAT THE GIRL IS PREGNANT.” Note how the law insulated boys from adulthood a little longer, the better to preserve their options.

On the day this envelope was mailed, Janey was an unmarried 19-year-old, four months pregnant with me. She and my 20-year-old father would marry 11 days later in Cumberland, Maryland, after fleeing – “eloping,” she insisted to her children, “because we were so in love” – their family farms in the middle of the night.

This week, I just discovered this envelope. In a curious twist of timing, I found it one day after Ohio Gov. John Kasich vetoed the so-called heartbeat bill but signed into law his 18th restriction on a woman’s constitutional right to abortion.

This latest one prevents a woman from getting an abortion after 20 weeks, which is when many medical abnormalities are first detected.

No exceptions for rape or incest and a limited one to protect a mother’s life.

Kasich is not fooling anyone who’s paying attention, including Dawn Laguens of the Planned Parenthood

Action Fund: “(Kasich) may hope that by vetoing a six-week ban – which would have virtually banned abortion with almost no exceptions – he comes off as moderate,” Laguens said in a statement. “The 20week ban will force women to travel long distances and cross state lines in order to access safe, legal abortion.”

Right-wing extremists who support laws such as this are driven by an insatiable desire to shame women. They want us to feel dirty and immoral and unworthy in the eyes of God as they define him.

Most of these legislators are men whose maleness exempts them from ever knowing what it feels like to have no control over their bodies or their daily lives. If they are impotent, they can take a drug to give them erections. If they want to have unprotected sex, they can do so without worrying about what an unplanned pregnancy would do to their bodies and their health, their families and their future.

These men will never know the desperation of scraping up enough money for a plane ticket, a train ticket, bus fare or gas for the tank of a car to get them to a state that still protects a woman’s consti-

tutional right.

They do not worry about bringing into the world children they – and we as communities – cannot afford.

My mother had no option but to give birth to me. Some readers who oppose abortion rights love to remind me that my mother didn’t abort me.

The discovery of that envelope reminds me, yet again, of what it was like not so very long ago for women like my mother. From the moment she found out she was pregnant until she and my father made that middle-of-the-night journey to a state that would marry them, she lived in fear of being exposed as an unmarried woman who dared to have sex.

My mother never fully shed the shame of her unplanned pregnancy all those years ago.

“I still would have had you,” she told me when I was 36 and a newly single mother. “It just would have been so different here” – she pointed to her heart – “if the choice had been all mine.”

If you listen to President-elect Donald Trump’s spinners, such as aide Sean Spicer, you would think Americans voted for corruption.

Spicer, confronted with the massive conflicts enveloping Trump, declares that this was all known to voters. (“The American people have understood exactly what they’re getting and they voted overwhelmingly for him. He has been very clear about what he owns, the role of his family and everything else since he announced that he was running for president, and they overwhelmingly elected him with all of that on the table.”)

Hmm. We seem to remember Trump promising to drain the swamp, not fill it. We think he won with a “Crooked Hillary” message, not a “Let Donald Be a Crook” message. And the Constitution, in any case, does not allow a vote to override the emoluments clause.

Moreover, Trump aides’ claim that Trump has been excessively transparent is nonsense. We still don’t know what

is in his taxes, whether he is in debt to banks owned by foreign governments and what properties he owns in what countries. Moreover, a hotel tower with his name on it overseas could well make it – and the people in it – a terrorist targets. Will taxpayers be footing the bill for additional security so Trump can keep his name on foreign buildings?

The Washington Post reported: “There are no conflict-of-interest laws that would force the president to sell off his business interests. But the president must still abide by laws against bribery, fraud and corruption, as well as a constitutional ban against accepting payments from a foreign power, upheld by threat of impeachment.

“Trump tweeted late last month that it was ‘visually important’ that the president show no business conflicts.

In a series of late-night tweets Monday, Trump said he would leave his businesses before the Jan. 20 inauguration to be managed by executives and his two adult sons, Donald Jr. and Eric. ‘No new deals,’ he added, would be done during his time in office.”

Kishwaukee College and Opportunity House Inc. recently hosted the fifth annual commencement ceremony for clients who completed the Learning for Life I and Learning for Life II programs.

Receiving certificates of completion for Learning for Life I from Laurie Borowicz, president of Kishwaukee College, were the following Opportunity House clients: William “BJ” Berkheimer, Hope Bockman, Laura Bosshardt, Brianne Mays, Kathy McVicker, Lisa Steinbis and Sandra Walker. Receiving medals of completion for Learning for Life II were Hillard “Shadow” Gentry, Christopher Guild, Mary Guild, Jennifer Hott, Kristine Lindstrom and Sara Killey.

The graduates must complete 32 hours of instruction in addition to class work offered by Opportunity House to complete the Learning for Life I Program. On average, the clients took two years to complete the requirements. Clients who received their certificates live with their families, in an agency group homes, or in their own apartments and receive occasional support services from Opportunity House staff. The medal recipients had previously earned their Learning for Life I certificates and completed additional coursework.

The commencement ceremony included the singing of the national anthem by Brian Perkins, Kishwaukee College maintenance staff; welcome remarks from Borowicz; congratulatory remarks from Robert Shipman, executive director of Opportunity House Inc.; and commencement address

by Carla Raynor, Learning for Life instructor. The Class of 2016 presented Raynor with a bouquet of fresh flowers. After the ceremony, the graduates

enjoyed light refreshments with family and friends.

Opportunity House Inc., in Sycamore and serving DeKalb County, assists people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to work, live in homes of their choice, and enjoy community life.

The Learning for Life program is a unique partnership between Opportunity House and Kish College. It began in 2009 with a first class taught by Carla Raynor, who also is the Family Literacy and Adult Education Support Services coordinator at Kishwaukee College. Raynor integrated readings, activities, field trips and homework and then developed other units based on the interests of the participating clients. Since then, Learning for Life programs have covered a wide range of subjects, including history, transportation, geography, science and more.

One of the clients’ favorite units is Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) class. VTS is based in cognitive psychology research and revolves around an examination and exploration of famous artwork by students in a group setting that encourages communication about the work and interpretation of the image. Each year, clients view artwork from well-known masters and then create their own works. Their artwork is then exhibited in the annual Opportunity House Art Show, during which the clients explain their works to visitors. This year’s show will be in the spring.

The partnership between Kishwaukee College and Opportunity House is one of the important key features of the Learning for Life Program. Through the program, the clients experience intellectually challenging materials that motivate and engage their interest and curiosity as it improves communication, academic and social skills.

Sycamore’s Mize says ‘it was weird’ adjusting to roles

YCAMORE – Last year was a banner season for the Sycamore girls tennis team, which had the maximum four entries qualify for the state tournament.

Of those six players, only Laurynn Mize wasn’t a senior. Although Mize changed from a doubles to a singles player this season, she did her part to make sure the Spartans were represented in the season finale.

Mize went 11-4 in her senior season and got to state for the second straight year, earning the Daily Chronicle Girls Tennis Player of the Year honor.

Mize said it was an adjustment not only going from doubles to singles, but also from a junior on a team of seniors to a senior on an inexperienced

ballclub.

“It was weird, honestly,” Mize said. “I hadn’t been on the Sycamore tennis team without all them here. I felt like I wasn’t supposed to be here any more, that I was supposed to have graduated. It was probably good because I got to come out of my shell and be captain and everything.”

Last year, Mize and Jackie Cole earned a spot in the state tournament, losing their first two matches. This year, Mize qualified for state after a third-place sectional finish as tennis split into two classes for the first time. Sycamore was in Class 1A. The Spartans also qualified a doubles team for the state tournament.

Not only was she team captain, she was academic all-conference.

“Mentally, you have to think a lot different,” Mize said. “And physically, you have to be in better shape ’cause you have to cover a lot more of the court. It’s kind of nice, you can sit there and focus and not worry about letting your partner down. But other times it’s hard because when you get down, you don’t have someone to help you out.”

O’Sullivan said Mize definitely was a leader.

“She just has that air about her,” O’Sullivan said. “Younger players just look up to her. Our coaching staff knew we could count on her, I knew we could count on her. As a firsttime coach, I could count on her just for the logistics of how meets work.

All-around, just a leader both in her game and as part of the team.”

O’Sullivan said Mize came into the year expecting to go to state and was able to follow through on it.

“Because I was a first-year coach, I had no experience watching her as a doubles player, but she’s just an excellent all-around player,” O’Sullivan said. “She can handle herself at any position you throw her into. She wore the hat of No. 1 singles player, and I never would have guessed that was her first time being singles.”

Mize said she hopes to play collegiate and has a couple of offers, but wants to end up at the right school.

“I want to find a college that I would want to go to not just for tennis,” Mize said. “If I can find one that’s a good fit, I’d love to.”

NEW YORK – At some point, you half expect an opposing player to break formation and just shadow Artemi Panarin everywhere he goes on the power play, even if it creates wide-open opportunities for some of the Blackhawks’ big guns. Just have someone follow him around, and in case he winds up for that big one-timer, tackle him to the ice and try your luck again next time.

But considering nobody’s figured out how to prevent Alex Ovechkin from scoring power-play goals on one-timers from the left faceoff circle after all these years, maybe Panarin can keep getting open, keep unleashing and keep scoring.

“I don’t know, you need to talk to the other teams,” Artem Anisimov said with a chuckle. “It’s good he’s open there for us.”

Panarin had two of the Hawks’ three power-play goals, and Richard Panik had the game-winner as they twice rallied for a 5-4 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday. The Hawks are 4-0-1 in their past five games, including a New York sweep of the Rangers and Islanders. It was an uncharacteristically wild game, with the Hawks fall-

ing behind 2-0 in the first four minutes, and scoring five goals for the first time since Nov. 1.

After being bailed out by Scott Darling and Corey Crawford so often this year, the Hawks’ offense finally bailed out the goalie. “[Darling] did so well for us so many games,” said Marian Hossa, who tied Pierre Turgeon for 37th place on the all-time scoring list with his 515th goal. “We stepped up for him. He made some key saves, too, but definitely, it’s nice to Marian Hossa return the favor.”

It started with the power play, which had only seven goals in the past six-plus weeks. After Andrew Ladd and Casey Cizikas staked the Islanders to an early 2-0 lead, Ryan Hartman drew a penalty, and Panarin one-timed a terrific cross-ice feed from Brent Seabrook to cut the lead to 2-1.

Barely three minutes later, the Hawks had one of their prettiest goals of the season on another power play, a tic-tac-toe passing exhibition from Panarin to Patrick Kane to Anisimov, who buried it for his 13th goal. Kane was showing one-timer all the way, but one-timed a pass instead of a shot.

“The first [power-play] unit put on a clinic,” Hossa said. “Those passes, that was unreal. Fun to watch.”

Sixty-five seconds later, Hossa scored his 16th goal of the season off a deft little backhand pass in the goalmouth by Hartman. Just like that, a 2-0 deficit was a 3-2 lead. After Ryan Strome tied it for the Islanders and Anders Lee gave them a 4-3 lead 22 seconds into the second period, Panarin stepped up again. Another Seabrook feed led to another Panarin one-timer and another power-play goal, this one with just 18.7 seconds left in the second.

One more nifty play won it for the Hawks 13:47 into a carefully played third period, as Dennis Rasmussen won a puck battle behind the net and fired a centering pass to Panik, who drove home the puck from the slot for the game-winner at 13:47 of the third.

With the six-goal first, the up-anddown play, the big effort from the power play, Michal Kempny being benched for the whole third period after he was on the ice for three goals and the rare off night for Darling, it was an unusual game for the Hawks. But it ended the same way most of them have been ending lately – with two points. The Hawks are tied for the league lead with 20 onegoal victories.

Hartman staying out of penalty box

mlazerus@suntimes.com NEW YORK – In 130 games with the Rockford IceHogs over the past two seasons, Ryan Hartman racked up 249 penalty minutes, averaging nearly a minor penalty every single game.

In 26 games with the Blackhawks this season, he has spent only four minutes in the penalty box. How is that even possible?

Easy. Hartman wants to play, especially now that he’s skating with two superstars in Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa. And Hartman knows the leash isn’t nearly as long in the NHL as it is in the AHL. “It’s a mindset,” Hartman said after Thursday’s morning skate in Brooklyn. “It’s knowing that if you want to be in the lineup, you can’t take penalties.”

Hartman hasn’t changed his game much. He still is the pest he always has been, and he’s drawing 1.73 minors per 60 minutes, behind only Andrew Desjardins on the Hawks. Coach Joel Quenneville said the key has been

Hartman’s ability to be smart with his stick and to stay out of the post-whistle scrums – or, at least, to not deliver the extra punch or shove that’s going to get him sent to the box.

“I haven’t toned it down,” Hartman said. “The last two years were kind of a process of finding the line and learning not to go over it. You’ve got to stay as close to the line as you can. I think this year I’ve been able to balance it pretty easiRyan Hartman ly.”

Crawford skates: Corey Crawford, who missed his seventh straight game Thursday night since undergoing an appendectomy, skated for the first time Wednesday. He didn’t take any shots.

“He had some movement,” Quenneville said. “I think it was all good.”

Ladd struggling: Former Hawks winger Andrew Ladd signed a seven-year, $38.5 million contract with the Islanders over the summer, with the expectation that he’d be the left wing

for John Tavares. It’s been something of a disaster, as Ladd has only three goals and three assists and has spent much of the season on the fourth line.

“You try to deal with it as it comes and get up every day to get better and try to figure it out,” Ladd said Thursday morning. “I guess it’s as frustrating as you allow it to be, and you try not to let that consume you.”

Tavares said that in Ladd’s case, “positive reinforcement from your peers is crucial.”

“He’s had a great attitude and work ethic,” Tavares said. “You try not to make it all about him; I don’t think that’s ever been the type of guy that he is. But you just try to focus on how he can help the team. But at the same time, he’s a proud guy and wants to go out there and play the best he can play and produce and be counted on as the big reason why we signed him. I don’t think you try and talk about it every day, but conversations come up over the course of the season, whether it’s from me or from him or from some of the other guys, just to talk and get things off your chest.”

In a stunning turn of events, the expected high temperature at Soldier Field is set to hover around zero.

What is unique is that the Bears and Packers have to play in what might be the coldest game in the Bears’ franchise history.

Single-digit temperatures at Halas Hall Pernell on Thursday prepared McPhee the Bears for Sunday’s sub-zero weather. Coach John Fox had the team spend an hour and 15 minutes practicing outside.

“We don’t have all the same heating elements that we do during the game,” he said. “Those are a little more sophisticated than the little blow heaters we use in practice. But all in all, I think it was a good rehearsal. Guys adapted and focused pretty well.”

With the team’s record at 3-10, the main source of intrigue heading into Sunday – at least based on conversations in the locker room after the cold practice – is which players will wear sleeves during the game.

“I ain’t wearing sleeves,” linebacker Pernell McPhee said. “As a D-lineman, as a front-seven guy, as a guy who plays defense, I think it’s a sign of weakness, but I ain’t wearing no sleeves. I don’t know about everybody else. “... I’m at combat. I ain’t got time to think about sleeves. I’m gonna go out there sleeveless, and that’s how I’m going to play.”

Fox won’t be impressed by any of his players going the no-sleeves route.

“I’ve told them the macho stuff’s all great, but there comes a point where people might question your intelligence,” he said.

Injury update: Receiver Eddie Royal (toe) and nose tackle Eddie Goldman (ankle) remained out of practice. WR Marquess Wilson did not practice because of a foot injury, and Fox said it’s “a little bit of the same issue.” Wilson has broken his foot twice, and the team is evaluating it.

For the second straight season he’s managed to build underachieving mediocrity.

No easy feat considering the roster underwent a complete face-lift in the summer, adding two championship players in Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo.

As Forman has shown the past three seasons, however, if it’s not brokeN, he will kick it until it no longer can be fixed.

But the real trick Forman continues to pull off? Through all the missteps, distrust and dysfunction he’s created

throughout the locker room and within the coaching staff, he can walk through the halls with a swagger that reeks of “I dare someone to fire me.’’

To his credit, no one in the organization has enough common sense to dare do that.

That’s why Tuesday happens.

That’s why former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau and his group of diaper dandy 21-year-olds overcame a Gar Forman 21-point deficit to run a suddenly disinterested looking team out of the United Center.

And that big response by the Bulls on Thursday? That flexing of pride that should have been on full display?

A one-sided laugher in Milwaukee in which the Bucks jumped out to a 30-18 first-quarter lead and only had to glance over their shoulder several times the rest of the night, winning 108-97.

It was the fifth loss over the past sev-

en games for the Bulls, as all the good feelings from October and November have them sitting with a 13-12 record.

Even the injury card couldn’t be played against the Bucks (12-12), as Rondo returned to the starting lineup after he was dealing with a sore ankle.

“It’s recognizing what we do out there that makes us successful when we go on good runs,” coach Fred Hoiberg said, when discussing the team’s split personality from game to game. “When teams go on good runs against us we have to find a way to keep battling, keep playing. It’s just finding that consistency, and we talk about that daily.

“You have to keep your foot on the gas. You have to step on a team when they’re down.”

Sort of as Milwaukee did to the Bulls.

Sure, Hoiberg’s team at least showed a bit of life in the final five minutes of the contest, cutting the deficit to eight points. But with 1:34 left, Matthew Dellavedova – no stranger to being that

thorn in the foot for the Bulls – hit a clutch 3 that stretched the lead back to 108-97. The Bulls missed several possessions to cut into it, but a missed shot and their 17th turnover of the night all but ended any sort of heroics.

“The way we came out of the gate… .

You talk about the things that you have to do in order to survive a game like this,” Hoiberg said. “You’ve got to find a way to make a team uncomfortable.

“The meetings that we had the last two days, I would have hoped that we would have solved playing the half a game or three-quarter game. We’ll continue to stress it, we’ll continue to work on it, but we need to improve if we want to have a chance to win games this year.”

And the kicker of the entire evening. Nikola Mirotic – a player Forman insisted two years ago was a key core player moving forward – got the DNP (Did Not Play) coach’s decision.

“Just the way we went,” Hoiberg said.

Like the rest of the NBA, the Bulls were saddened to hear the news that Turner sideline reporter Craig Sager, 65, lost his longtime battle with cancer and died Thursday.

“Very sad,” coach Fred Hoiberg said. “A great man. I was never Craig Sager good enough as a player to get interviewed by Craig, but I did have the opportunity as a coach when he was covering the NCAA tournament down in San Antonio. When I found out he was the sideline reporter, I was very excited to get that opportunity to get interviewed by Craig.

“Got to know him a little bit, obviously playing and Craig covering all the different playoff series that we were a part of when I was in the NBA. So great for the game of basketball. Just a guy that always asked the right question. He was not afraid to ask the tough question. Just a wonderful man.”

The outpouring of condolences for Sager and his family, whether it was through statements or social media, went out through the entire day and

night, including the Bucks taking a moment of silence before tipoff with the Bulls to honor Sager.

It seemed to especially hit home with Hoiberg, who has had his health scares in the past, dealing with several heart surgeries.

“Just how courageously he fought his battle,” Hoiberg said, when asked if the news brought out emotions of his own battles. “To go through three bone marrow transplants and to continue to fight all the way to the end just shows how strong Craig is. I know it takes a strong support system with the family, and having that by his side the entire time.

“Obviously, I had a lot of respect for Craig, and even more so for the way he fought that battle and brought a lot of awareness to cancer. He’ll be missed.”

Former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau released a statement on the news, saying, “I am truly saddened by the news of the passing of one of the NBA’s great personalities in Craig Sager. I always enjoyed our interactions together and, like many, looked forward to seeing what particular suit he had on that given night. I will remember Craig for his infectious smile, his will and determination and the upbeat spirit he lived his life with every day. We will forever be Sager Strong. On behalf of the Minnesota Timberwolves, our thoughts and prayers are with the Sager family during this difficult time.”

Cheerful, colorful NBA reporter Craig Sager dies at 65

HOUSTON – Batavia native Craig Sager never once thought about giving up as he battled cancer for more than two years.

“Man, life is too beautiful, too wonderful, there’s just too many things,” he said in late August. “It’s not just you. It’s your family and kids and all. Fight. Fight until the end. Fight as hard as you can.”

The end for the beloved TNT broadcaster came Thursday when the man known as much for his outrageous wardrobe as his relationships with the NBA’s elite succumbed to the disease he fought so hard to overcome. Turner Sports announced his death without disclosing details. He was 65 and had worked basketball games for TNT for nearly a quarter-century.

“Craig Sager was a beloved member of the Turner family for more than three decades and he has been a true inspiration to all of us,” Turner President David Levy said.

“There will never be another Craig Sager.”

MINNEAPOLIS – The entire Minnesota football team said Thursday that it is boycotting all football activities, which could include its bowl game (Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27), until it gets satisfactory answers from the university about the suspension of 10 players.

Getting a team to fill the bowl spot on short notice would be difficult, if not impossible. But the next team in line to receive a bid is Northern Illinois, which finished 5-7 but has the highest Academic Progress Rate among teams with that record.

Seahawks take NFC West title with win over Rams

SEATTLE – Russell Wilson threw three touchdown passes, Tyler Lockett had 130 yards receiving and a score, and the Seattle Seahawks won the NFC West title with a 24-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.

Seattle claimed its third NFC West title in four seasons, assuring itself of at least one home game in the playoffs and keeping the pressure on Detroit in the competition for the No. 2 seed in the NFC and a firstround bye. Seattle also snapped a threegame losing streak to the Rams.

Colorado’s MacIntyre wins AP Coach of the Year

BOULDER, Colo. – Mike MacIntyre has the reputation as a turnaround artist. Give him a program, any program, and he will transform it.

Colorado, however, had the looks of being the sort of program that not even MacIntyre could fix.

After three years that resulted in 10 victories, MacIntyre led the 11th-ranked Buffaloes to a 10-win season, a spot in the Pac-12 Championship game and even onto the fringes of the national-title conversation for a week or two. Colorado also will make its first bowl appearance since 2007.

For that, MacIntyre is The Associated Press college football Coach of the Year.

He received 109 points and 25 first-place votes from the AP college football poll panel, while Penn State’s James Franklin was second with 98 and 16. Alabama’s Nick Saban was third with 57 and 13.

More well-controlled studies point to the possibility of a slight decrease in cancers among people who take statins. One study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, analyzed data on more than 60,000 people who used statins and found a 15 percent decrease in cancer death rates compared to those who had never used statins.

In fact, many studies now are assessing the potential of statins to be used in therapy against certain types of cancers.

I have had many patients fearful of statins for a variety of reasons, such as worry about muscle pain or a potential increased risk of diabetes or cancer. Their worry may stem in part from a fear of taking a medication every day to prevent problems that currently don’t exist.

That’s understandable, especially when the patients currently feel healthy. But the fact remains: Statins decrease the risk of heart attacks and don’t appear to increase cancer rates. In summation, if you need a statin, you should take it.

Dear Doctor: Does my cholesterol medication increase my risk of cancer?

Dear Reader: I assume you’re asking about statins, the most commonly prescribed type of cholesterol-lowering medication. These drugs, which work by lowering cholesterol levels in the bloodstream, generally are regarded as both safe and effective. They’re so effective widespread statin use, along with a decline in smoking rates and an increase in the use of cardiac stents, have helped decrease the U.S. death rate from heart attacks.

However, some research has suggested long-term statin use may have unintended negative effects, including an increase in the risk of cancer. This potential connection originated in now-dated studies showing lower levels of LDL, the so-called “bad” cholesterol, were associated with an increased risk of cancer. The problem with this line of reasoning is people with lower LDL might have more underlying illnesses that also can increase their risk of cancer.

Many older studies did not take that connection into account.

Furthermore, other studies suggesting a link between statins and increased cancer risk looked only at total cholesterol, which also includes HDL, the so-called “good” cholesterol. Lower levels of good cholesterol aren’t affected by statins and could be a separate risk factor for disease.

Take, for example, the case of smokers.

They generally have lower levels of HDL cholesterol, so their total cholesterol may be lower as well. In short, a lower total cholesterol number could be a red herring when assessing cancer risk.

As to inviting the person to a party – not everyone grieves in the same way or for the same length of time. Unless religious custom prevents it, if you think the friend or relative might enjoy the event, by all means extend an invitation.
