Learning how to get involved About 20 residents from around DeKalb County spent Saturday morning in the community room at the DeKalb police station learning about public service, both through community volunteerism and running for office. The workshop was hosted by #ProudlyDeKalb.

It was good to see three of the candidates for DeKalb mayor – Mike Embrey, incumbent John Rey and Jerry Smith – plus a couple of others who could be City Council or city clerk candidates. Three attendees were from other communities – Malta, Cortland and Creston.

The first three presenters were Greg Kuhn from the Center for Governmental Studies at Northern Illinois University, Peter Burchard, also from NIU and a retired city manager, plus Robert Beezat, another retired city manager.

Later in the morning former city and school board officials sat as a panel to answer questions.

They were Brendon Gallagher and Bertrand Simpson, both past DeKalb aldermen, Cohen Barnes, a former DeKalb School District 428 board member, and Clark Neher, former president of the DeKalb library board.

A quote I liked came from Burchard: “Never underestimate the power of your voice.”

Another piece of good advice from him: A person should be thinking, “I am here to serve the public’s interest, not my own self-interest.”

Over many years of covering government and politics, I have found that some of the best community activists start with one burning issue that bugs them, or one passion they want pursued.

After a few months or even years of community involvement, some serve on a city or county committee or commission, others even run for public office.

My personal experience at getting involved started when we formed a citizens’ committee to advocate for creating a standalone community college in a large district

After a year of butting heads with that board, it was suggested I run for a board seat.

To put a long story short, I defeated a 20year incumbent and was elected two more times to that board. And we did get the new college built and accredited during that time.

But I knew enough to eventually say “mission accomplished” and move on to other interests.

Too many local officials decide the place can’t get along without them and so keep running over and over, sometimes for the common good, other times out of self-interest and ego.

That is why I firmly believe term limits would be good for ALL forms of government, even for appointed bodies.

It was fascinating to learn that the DeKalb mayor, with consent of the council, has to fill no less than 96 positions on city boards, commissions and committees.

There certainly still is room for people who want to help.

So find your passion and step up to serve your community in some way.

Five years after being charged with rape, Andrew Rifkin told a jury Wednesday that it never happened.

The former Northern Illinois University police officer accused of sexually assaulting a student in 2011 said the sex was consensual.

He also said he never read the police statement that he signed and was tricked into confessing to the crime by his superior officers in an attempt to get his job back after being fired.

On the stand, Rifkin said that

he never used any force or threat of force. He said he had sex with the 18-year-old NIU freshman at his off-campus apartment twice. During the second encounter, he said he tried to engage in a specific sexual act with the woman, but said he stopped when she said it was painful and told him to stop.

Rifkin, who lives in Northbrook and works as an independent food broker, said he knew fraternizing with students wasn’t allowed and that he could get fired if caught.

He detailed the steps he took to hide his relationship with the woman, including deleting her text messages and meeting her away from

residence halls where he knew his fellow officers might see him with a student.

After having sex with the woman twice, Rifkin decided to end the relationship and never responded to her subsequent text messages.

“At that point I came to a realization that fraternization with students was probably not a good idea, so I decided to completely cut it off,” he said.

Rifkin, 28, is charged with sexually assaulting the woman in October 2011. If convicted of criminal sexual assault, Rifkin could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison. Probation would not be an option.

On Oct. 28, 2011, the woman contacted NIU police to report the alleged rape, which she said took place Oct. 14, 2011, in Rifkin’s Cortland apartment.

Rifkin was fired from the university’s police department a few days later; he had graduated from the police academy Sept. 23, 2011.

Rifkin said that when two NIU police officers showed up at his door with a termination letter, they told him to come into the office the following Monday to talk with them and that he might be able to get his job back.

Crystal and her 9- and 4-year-old sisters participated in the third annual Operation Warm coat giveaway event, which provided new winter coats to about 50 children in need.

Members of Firefighters Local 1236 partnered with the DeKalb Classroom Teachers Association as part of the International Firefighter Association’s Operation Warm.

Teachers identified about 50 students in need of winter coats, and the fire department hosted the coat giveaway at its fire station at 700 Pine St. Children were able to tour the station and fire trucks after picking out a winter coat in their favorite color.

Operation Warm provides the coats, which are made in America by union workers.

“It’s painful to see kids come to school in a winter like this in just a sweatshirt,” said Chris Perkovich, a retired DeKalb teacher. “Sometimes it’s the coat they don’t like to wear that mom gave them, but sometimes they don’t have one.”

2 people laid off after council calls for cuts Aldermen vote to slash $100K in personnel costs in ’17

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Two positions have been eliminated in DeKalb’s city government after the City Council approved a budget plan calling for reducing spending on personnel in 2017.

City Manager Anne Marie Gaura said Wednesday that employees were notified Tuesday that they were losing their jobs, a day after the City Council approved an $87.8 million budget. She declined to identify the positions or employees affected.

“Two full-time positions were identified that could be eliminated from the organization while minimizing the impact on services to the community,” Gaura said. “Since this is a budget that begins Jan. 1, the reductions had to take place prior to Jan. 1.”

The city will enter 2017 with a plan to build a reserve fund that will equal 25 percent of general fund expenses, but some of the money will have to come from reductions in staff costs.

The budget includes $36.2 million in general fund expenditures. It includes a surplus that will build the city’s reserve fund to more than $9 million, about three months’ worth of operating expenses.

By a 6-2 vote Monday, the council voted to add a proviso that will require a reduction in staff spending of about $100,000.

“I totally understand the philosophical idea of a reduction in the staff,” 3rd Ward Alderman Michael Marquardt, who voted for the budget plan, said. “I also see this viewpoint of, we have to be very careful in where we reduce that staff.”

The overall budget includes tax increment financing spending, pension contributions and the DeKalb Public Library’s annual budget.

Although the city does collect property taxes to fund police and fire pensions, it relies on revenue from other taxes and fees to fund its dayto-day operations.

Council members and city staff have been working to increase the reserve fund in order to protect the city’s credit rating from further

downgrades, as borrowing could be necessary to fund capital projects after the city’s TIF districts expire in 2019 and 2022.

Council members had called for plans to reduce staff spending during a lengthy budget discussion in November, and on Monday, city officials put forward the option of cutting $99,600 in staff costs, excluding sworn police officers.

At the insistence of 4th Ward Alderman Bob Snow, the council decided that all positions should be considered.

“Staff reduction should be all positions, including police, fire, streets,” Snow said. “If we go that route, I want to make sure it’s open to all departments.”

The savings from staff reductions would be $99,600 in 2017, but would be larger in subsequent years because employees would be paid separation benefits, according to city documents.

Aldermen David Jacobson, 1st Ward; Bill Finucane, 2nd Ward; Marquardt; Snow; Dave Baker, 6th Ward; and Anthony Faivre, 7th Ward; supported requiring a reduction in staff. Mayor John Rey and 5th Ward Alderwoman Kate Noreiko were opposed.

Rey had supported a spending plan that would have delivered just less than a 25 percent reserve fund, close enough that the city could have made up the difference during the year if revenues exceeded what were conservative projections, he said.

“I did not feel that $100,000 (in staffing cuts) was a necessary component to meet the goals of a budget that fit within the guidelines we were hearing from Financial Advisory Committee and other citizens,” Rey said.

However, Rey pointed to some positive features of the budget. The city has gone from needing to borrow to pay for operations in 2010 to having millions in reserve.

Council members also voted to go forward with plans for a $60,000 study of the North Annie Glidden corridor, an area that is in transition and is short on some basic services such as grocery retailers, and approved plans for a scaled back cultural competency program to help city staff serve minority residents.

“I was very pleased with the civil discourse that we had at the council this past Monday with regard to the budget,” Rey said. “I think people really were very thoughtful and no one was grandstanding.”

She was born September 8, 1952, in Sandwich, Illinois the daughter of William B. and Hazel L. (Larson) Chapman.

Michelle was employed by The Connection in Loves Park for six years as a sales representative and earlier by Sundstrand Corporation in Rockford; she was a faithful blood donor.

She is survived by her three daughters, Christine Baie of Hinckley, Amanda Merideth of Roscoe, Hope (Rodney) Curran of Mundelein; two grandchildren, Maren and Liam Curran; two sisters, Collette Edwards of Gilbert, Arizona, Denise (Tom) Nelson of Rockford; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m.

Monday, December 19, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, with the Rev. Rod Curran of Harvest Fellowship Church officiating.

Born: December 22, 1953; in Beardstown, IL Died: November 30, 2016; in Portage, WI Arthur Kelly Swan, 63, died Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at the Divine Savior Hospital in Portage, WI following a long and difficult struggle with cancer.

He was born December 22, 1953 in Beardstown, IL, the son of Charles and Mickie (Bray) Swan.

He leaves his wife of 44 years, Mary (Perry) Swan; his sons, Adam Swan (Wisconsin); Kelly Maness (Mississippi), James Maness (Mississippi); his daughters, Patsy Swan (DeKalb), Charley Swan (Wisconsin Dells); granddaughters Jaylynn, Lyric, Cinnamon, Kimy, Donna, Savannah, Maegan, Kyla; grandsons Skyler, Dakota, Cole and Ashton. He is survived by his sisters, Shari McIntyre (DeKalb), Julie Smith (Green Bay), Paula (Jim) Wilfong (Rio, WI) and Rose Swan (Danville) and a brother Mac (Albert Swan) McIntyre (DeKalb); and many nephews, nieces, and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kalem “Leroy” Swan; and a daughter, Andrea “Andi” Swan; one brother, Michael Swan; and a sister, Dixie Rogers.

He served in the US Army stationed at Ft. Ord (California), Ft. Riley (Kansas) and Operation Reforger in Mannheim, Germany. Mr. Swan like his father before him was a lifelong commercial fisherman and fur trapper and he became an expert tree trimmer. He made trammel and hoop nets along with catfish and turtle traps by hand from scratch. He greatly enjoyed telling stories and teaching about the great outdoors.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Monday, December 19 at 1:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Sycamore with Pastor Steve Persson officiating. Food and refreshments will be provided following the service.

Children stop on a number after the music stops during a book walk Wednesday at the Sycamore Public Library Holiday Open House Nicholas Cvek, 9, was one of many children who won books at the book walk. The North Grove Elementary third-grader said that was the best part of the night for him.

“It was my favorite, because you had to earn the book, and I was so happy because that was the first time I’ve won something. I liked seeing Santa, too, because we had a staring contest, and I won,” he said.

Nicholas’ mother, Tara Kraabel of Sycamore, said she and her children almost always participate in library activities.

“This is something fun to do during the middle of the week, and the kids like to see their friends from school,” she said. “It brings the community together and gives kids different activities that encourage them to read and get excited about reading.”

Melissa Romano of Sycamore had never been to the Holiday Open House before, and said her daughters, ages 2 and 5, were having a blast.

“It’s good to get out of the house and

The freezing temperatures didn’t stop more than 200 people from visiting the Sycamore Library on Wednesday night for the third annual Holiday Open House, where families enjoyed crafts, Christmas carols by local Bluegrass band Truman’s Ridge, games, and of course, plenty of Christmas goodies.

Santa even stopped by, much to the delight of the many children who were eagerly awaiting his arrival.

Heather Salis, 8, of Clare, was very excited about coming to the open house so she could see Santa and tell him what she wanted for Christmas.

“Tonight was fun. I played Bingo, did the book walk and won a book. It was fun to see my friends here,” said the West Elementary School student.

“I love to come to the library because they have great books to checkout and it’s a fun place to hang out.”

Cryssida Green’s 4-year-old son Quentin didn’t get to visit with Santa, but she said he had a lot of fun participating in the variety of activities.

“This is a wonderful event for everyone. It’s more than I expected,” she said. “We support all community events because we’re a family that’s grounded in our community. It’s good to stay involved and meet more people.”

New at this year’s event was a book walk and a library scavenger hunt, which were big hits with the kids. The games were run by members of the Northern Illinois Reading Council.

Elizabeth Coats, library board member and a member of the council, said the scavenger hunt was a good way to get kids more familiar with the library.

“We want kids to get connected to the library and the people at the library so when the kids come here they know where to find all the materials and they can see all that the library has to offer,” she said.

Sycamore residents Corki and Ken Williams came to the library specifically for the party to enjoy the holiday treats and activities.

“I made a cute ornament, so there are things here for various ages,” Corki said. “We like to support the library.

We come often and enjoy the friendly people here.”

Jesse Butz, library director, said that while attendance was down a little from last year because of the frigid weather, he was still pleased that plenty of folks came to enjoy an evening out.

“Everyone’s having a great time and this went off without a hitch,” he said. “We want people to come to the library and relax. We’re always trying to find ways to bring families together, and we have activities for both adults and children. There’s something for everyone here and it gets people in the holiday spirit.”

Continued from page 3 Rifkin, wearing a suit, returned to the NIU police department and said he was taken to an interview room and told to write a statement about his relationship with the student.

He said it took him five minutes to write his initial statement – which made no mention of sex. The jury had watched a video of Rifkin’s 2½-hour interview with police on Tuesday.

Most of the video was silent because of what police said was a malfunction. About 40 minutes of audio from the interview was played for the jury.

NIU police Cmdr. Jason John told the jury Tuesday that he forgot to turn the recording device back on after leaving the interview room at one point.

On Wednesday, Rifkin said the missing audio included him denying that he continued to engage in the sex act after the woman told him to stop.

He said he only read the first two sentences of the typed statement that NIU police officers prepared for him.

“I skimmed the first two lines,” he said. “ ... Because I assumed it was a summary of everything.”

He signed the statement and initialed it. He said that when he later read a copy of his statement, he called NIU police officials to try to correct the problem only to find out that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. On the stand, he denied key parts of the statement.

The woman testified Tuesday that Rifkin forced her to engage in the sex act. She told the jury “it was horrible.

I’ve never felt that kind of pain before.” As she did Tuesday, the woman sat in the gallery with two supporters for portions of the trial Wednesday.

She was not in the courtroom when Rifkin described the sexual encounters, but did observe some of his testimony.

Presiding Judge William Brady excused the jury after Rifkin’s direct testimony. After the jurors left, he told First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein that he was concerned about the woman’s condition.

“She’s sitting there shaking uncontrollably,” the judge said. He also told

prosecutors that her reaction to some of Rifkin’s testimony, which included shaking her head to indicate ‘no,’ was unacceptable. The judge said that while he couldn’t imagine how difficult it must be for the woman, he said that he was concerned about how her reactions might affect jurors. Rifkin’s attorney, Bruce Brandwein, asked that she be removed from the courtroom. Brady asked Klein to speak with the woman. After the talk, the woman voluntarily decided not to return to the courtroom.

On cross-examination, Klein asked Rifkin why he lied in his first statement to police. Rifkin said he was hoping to get his job back, but he admitted to lying in the statement.

The defense rested Wednesday after Rifkin’s testimony. Earlier in the day, they called a forensic expert, two former NIU students and several current and former NIU police officers.

None of them provided evidence as to what happened between Rifkin and the woman in his bedroom on Oct. 14, 2011.

Closing arguments will begin at 9:30 a.m. today.

He said he is grateful for people in the community who are willing to help families in need.

“I’m a single parent with three kids, and it’s been rough,” Edwards said. “I was hoping I could find someone that could help.”

This Santa Claus cube puzzle sells for over $2,000 in almost perfect condition. *** Q: While preparing for home renovations, we found a few dozen vintage beer cans carefully preserved in our attic. Many of the cans were opened from the bottom, preserving the “pop top.” They are all cans from mid1900s. How can we determine the value and best venue for selling?

A: Beer cans with aluminum pull tops were first made in 1962. Iron City Beer was the first beer in cans with ring-type pull tabs. The ring tabs came completely off the can and were discarded. The Sta-Tab was invented in 1975 and was first used on cans of Falls City beer. The price of old beer cans varies from under a dollar to several hundred or more for a rare and desirable can. There are several sites online that list beer cans and their value, although most of them are sites that are selling beer cans, so the prices will be higher than what you can expect to get. By checking several sites, you can get an idea of value. If there is an advertising or breweriana show in your area, you can check out prices there and perhaps can sell them to a dealer. A: To avoid breathing mold spores, be sure to wear a dust mask and safety goggles. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and brush attachment to remove any loose mold. Then, clean the surface with a solution of dishwashing detergent and warm water. Scrub gently with a sponge, cloth or brush, being be careful not to soak the wood.

You can use bleach or a mold killer, but be sure to test it on an inconspicuous place on the furniture before using it. Rinse with a clean cloth dipped in water and wrung out. Dry the furniture with another clean cloth.

If mold remains, the spot may need to be sanded. A combination vacuumsander should be used. BY TERRY AND KIM KOVEL KOVELS.COM If you were getting ready for the traditional Christmas party in 1860s England, you might have been searching the storage cupboards for the holiday punch bowl. Colorful, decorative majolica serving pieces were popular then, and George Jones made some of the best. Starting in 1866, he made covered dishes for cheese, game pie and even sardines. Special dishes were made for honey, cake, oysters, butter, berries, biscuits or other foods.

All were decorated with raised flowers, leaves or figures glazed in bright colors. Jones was joined by his sons in 1873 and the company name was changed to “George Jones & Sons.”

George died in 1893, the company was sold in 1929 and the name was changed by 1951. Early pieces are marked with the overlapping letters “GJ” in a circle until 1873, when a crescent with “& sons” was added.

Majolica lost favor and was considered “kitsch” until about 1970 when it began to be used by decorators on the east coast. Today, George Jones majolica is expensive. The amusing Christmas punch bowl that is decorated with holly and held by the famous puppet character Punch auctioned at Skinner’s in Boston for $3,075.

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Bond was set at $100,000 Wednesday for a 25-year-old DeKalb man who police said put a gun to his girlfriend’s head and later choked her after she screamed for help from the roof of their apartment building.

Kirby Brame, of the 1000 block of Ridge Drive, DeKalb, is charged with aggravated domestic battery, unlawful restraint and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. If convicted of the most serious charge, aggravated domestic battery, he could be sentenced to three to seven years in prison. Brame was being held Wednesday evening at the DeKalb County Jail and must post $10,000 bail to be released.

According to a news release from DeKalb police, the victim said that the trouble began about 11 p.m. Monday, when Brame and the victim got into an argument at their apartment. During the argument, Brame pointed a gun at the woman’s head, the victim said.

The victim told police she feared Brame would shoot her, and so she stayed overnight. When Brame left the apartment Tuesday morning, she began packing her clothes, but Brame returned before she could escape.

Brame blocked the door and refused to allow the woman to leave, so she climbed out a second-floor window onto the roof

and screamed for help, police said.

The victim told police Brame then pulled her back inside and started choking her. A witness called police around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday to report the woman’s screaming, police said. The abuse stopped when police arrived, according to the release.

After police took the woman away from the apartment, she told them her story. Officers then returned to the apartment. They found Brame standing outside and arrested him. A search of the couple’s apartment uncovered two loaded handguns, which were not defaced, DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said. Police are trying to determine how Brame, a convicted felon, got the guns.

Redel said officers saw no obvious signs that the victim had been battered when they arrived, and she was too afraid to tell them on the scene. However, some evidence supports her story, Redel said.

Safe Passage is a nonprofit agency dedicated to helping to reduce or prevent domestic violence in DeKalb County.

The agency offers an emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and has trained staff available 24 hours a day through its hotline at 815-756-5228. The nonprofit is online at safepassagedv.org.

CHICAGO – A prominent Chicago alderman has been charged with stealing at least $30,000 from a charitable fund set up in part to help poor constituents and spending it at casinos and to pay his daughter’s college tuition.

In a grand jury indictment unsealed Wednesday, Willie B. Cochran also is accused of demanding cash from a liquor store owner and an attorney for developers in exchange for taking action in his official capacity to help their businesses.

Caterpillar announces undisclosed number of layoffs in 2017

PEORIA – Caterpillar Inc. is laying off an undisclosed number of employees because of expected bleak market conditions in 2017.

A statement Wednesday by the earth-moving equipment manufacturer said Caterpillar will try to find posts for jobless workers elsewhere in the company.

The (Peoria) Journal-Star reported that the statement indicated displaced employees would receive severance packages and “outplacement services from appropriate agencies.”

The company announced a restructuring plan in the fall of 2015, which included eliminating as many as 10,000 jobs and

According to the indictment, Cochran sought donations for the charitable fund, called the 20th Ward Activities Fund, by telling potential contributors that it would help needy families by feeding some and helping buy winter coats and school supplies. He was the sole signatory on a fund bank account.

CHICAGO – A Chicago Board of Education report shows that some wealthy families scammed to get their children into selective-enrollment schools and that some school administrators concealed dropouts to boost attendance and graduation rates.

Some see nuke risk with collapse of Russian ties

LONDON – It’s not quite Cold War II, but the collapse of U.S. military relations with Russia could prove to be one of the most consequential aspects of President Barack Obama’s national security legacy while presenting an early test of Donald Trump’s hope for friendly ties to Moscow.

Beyond the prospect of the two militaries accidentally brushing against each other in Europe or the Middle East, there is concern that a near-complete absence of military-to-military communication could enable a miscalculation or escalation leading to a nuclear confrontation.

The U.S. and Russia possess 90 percent of the world’s nuclear weapons. Some are continuously on high alert.

While Secretary of State John Kerry and his predecessor, Hillary Clinton, kept up frequent contact with their Russian counterpart on Syria, Iran and other issues, the Pentagon and the Kremlin went largely silent on topics like nuclear risk reduction. The Pentagon cut off most military-to-military contacts with Moscow in 2014 after Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its incursions into eastern Ukraine, and the Russians ended longstanding cooperation with the U.S. on nuclear security. That left the relationship at a low ebb that worries some experts.

Former Sen. Sam Nunn, who heads a nonpartisan group that advocates for measures to reduce the risk of nuclear conflict, warns that Washington and Moscow are in a “race between cooperation and catastrophe.” Cooperation, he

said, is losing.

“The dangers are growing,” he said in a telephone interview. “Distrust between the U.S. and Russia, between NATO and Russia, is in a downward spiral.”

The slide has quickened, and the repair perhaps made more difficult, by allegations of Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election and the Pentagon’s sharp criticism of the Russian military’s role in Syria. Trump has held out hope of improving relations with his future counterpart, President Vladimir Putin, whom he has praised. But it’s unclear what that portends for military ties.

Some of Trump’s top administration picks, including Rex Tillerson for secretary of state, are seen as friendly toward Russia. But the president-elect’s choice for defense secretary, retired Gen. James Mattis, has expressed worry about Russia’s intentions. In remarks to the Heritage Foundation in 2015, he said Russia wants to “break NATO apart.”

Mattis may face some urgency in setting a new course for military ties with Russia, but some voices in the new administration may press for other early priorities, such as advancing the anti-Islamic State fight in Iraq.

The man Mattis would replace, Defense Secretary Ash Carter, is wrapping up a world tour this week, but did not visit Moscow. In fact, he has not been there during his nearly two years in office. His two immediate predecessors, Chuck Hagel and Leon Panetta, never made it to Moscow, either. The last defense secretary to visit Moscow was Obama’s first, Robert Gates, in 2011.

NEW YORK – President-elect Donald Trump, who faced fierce opposition from some Silicon Valley leaders during the election campaign, strove to assure the titans of tech Wednesday that his administration is “here to help you folks do well.”

Trump, still savoring his election victory, convened a summit at Trump Tower for nearly a dozen tech leaders, whose industry largely supported Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Many in the industry are worried that Trump will stifle innovation, curb the hiring of computer-savvy immigrants and infringe on consumers’ digital privacy.

He immediately tried to allay those fears.

“We want you to keep going with the incredible innovation. Anything we can do to help this go on, we will be there for you,” Trump said. “You’ll call my people, you’ll call me. We have no formal chain of command around here.”

The CEOs who filled the table in Trump’s 25th floor conference room included Apple’s Tim Cook, Alphabet’s

utives who have expressed misgivings about Trump’s pledge to deport millions of immigrants who are in the country illegally.

The meeting remained amiable and the group, which agreed to meet quarterly, also had preliminary discussions about immigration and how to stay competitive with China, although no firm commitments were made, according to a person briefed on the meeting but not authorized to discuss it publicly.

Trump was joined by several members of his senior staff and his three eldest children, who are expected to help run his business once he takes office, again blurring the line between the president-elect’s personal and professional lives.

Reporters were allowed to witness only the first moments of the meeting and most of the attendees departed without comment.

But Bezos, who is also owner of The Washington Post, which has been a frequent target of Trump complaints about campaign coverage, said he found the meeting to be “very productive” and said he “shared the view that the administration should make innovation one of its key pillars.”

Do your jobs, do not sue It’s hard to have much sympathy for six Chicago-area Democratic state representatives who sued the Illinois comptroller’s office Dec. 2 for back pay that’s been held up since August by Illinois’ protracted budget mess. After all, those lawmakers are part of the problem.

It’s the Illinois General Assembly’s responsibility to approve a budget that the governor is willing to sign.

If lawmakers approve a budget, the governor vetoes it, and legislators are then unable to override the veto, it seems to us those lawmakers have an obligation to negotiate in good faith with the governor until a budget deal satisfactory to all parties can be reached.

We haven’t heard any of the six – Emanuel “Chris” Welch, Kate Cloonen, Lisa Hernandez, Mary Flowers, Sonya Harper and Silvana Tabares – pushing hard to get fellow legislators moving on the budget.

We haven’t heard them challenging Democratic legislative leaders, House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, to soften their stances on making a budget deal with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner – a budget deal that would start payments to the plaintiffs and thousands of others flowing again.

Apparently it was easier for Welch and company to sue outgoing Republican Comptroller Leslie Munger on her final work day in office than to do the work they expect to be paid for.

Democrat Susana Mendoza was sworn in as comptroller Dec. 5 after winning a special election last month. She has said she will continue to withhold payment to lawmakers unless ordered by a judge to put their checks at the head of the line in front of all other unpaid vendors and workers.

It’s a long line of misery – 126,000 unpaid bills totaling more than $10.3 billion, according to Munger on her last day in office – and it’s gotten worse. The backlog had risen to more than $10.5 billion.

One of the problems for many lawmakers is that they view their jobs as full time.

They certainly get paid full-time salaries – $67,836. Many receive stipends of $10,327 for extra duties. The total: $78,163.

But the Legislature is in session only from January until May, with a 2-week veto session in November.

Full-time employment? Not hardly.

By stretching their legislative jobs to full time, such lawmakers don’t have any “real” jobs to fall back on. And now, their personal finances are feeling the pinch.

No matter.

Lawmakers who want to get paid should do their jobs. Approving a budget deal is Job 1.

Immigration lessons learned

We are encouraged by the recent actions of the U.S. Department of Customs and Border Protection to erect a giant tent adjacent to the Donna-Rio Bravo International Bridge to accommodate an onslaught of immigrants crossing into the country illegally in this region.

The move demonstrates that CBP learned vital lessons two years ago when the unprecedented wave of unaccompanied minors and immigrants with young children overwhelmed authorities and brought international attention to our South Texas border.

CBP undoubtedly has a difficult job in protecting our national borders, made more complex by a volatile political debate over what to do about immigration – a debate that is ever more heightened with the election of Donald Trump, who campaigned on a vow to close the border to illegal entries.

But the $3.8 million tent that can hold 1,000 and was opened

Dec. 9, just days after its construction, suggests CBP is becoming more attuned to a nuance of immigration policy that can be lost on policymakers: that treating immigrants in a humanitarian manner does not equate to condoning the acts of tens of thousands of immigrants who are crossing our international borders illegally.

McAllen Mayor Jim Darling understands this nuance and his legal background recently allowed him to raise an important distinction as policymakers grapple with what to do about this surge of immigration. He noted in a speech earlier this month for the groundbreaking of a permanent Humanitarian Respite Center in downtown McAllen, that once these people are apprehended and processed by CBP, their status changes to a legal one — however temporary that may be.

Darling also reminds us of the ongoing image battle that this region faces on the national stage that wrongly suggests that the

multitude of people coming across pose an acute danger to the Rio Grande Valley.

It is with that context that we caution CBP against the temptation of using the Donna facility as a way to mask any image problem that the agency may feel.

We understand CBP’s need for security. But access to other holding facilities, particularly those farmed out to private prison operators, has been extremely limited.

Transparency is paramount in how these detainees are being cared for.

We believe that any image problem caused by the multitude of immigrants should not be thrust on any one federal agency or on our region. But rather, it should be thrust on Washington, which is responsible for developing a comprehensive immigration policy that works.

And which has failed to do so year after year.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Does Russian involvement mean “this was a tainted election” with a result that was “illegitimate in important ways,” as Paul Krugman charges?

In a country premised on rule by popular consent, whether an election, or for that matter a government, is legitimate depends on whether the public thinks it is. If the Electoral College were now to vote for Hillary Clinton, for example, tens of millions of Americans would consider it illegitimate, although the Constitution clearly allows for it.

But I think there are good reasons

for voters, including voters who did not support Trump, to reject Krugman’s view.

The form that Russian interference took is foremost among them. It didn’t hack voting machines so that citizen preferences would be miscounted.

It didn’t even inject misinformation into the public debate. What it mainly seems to have done is put accurate, but wrongfully obtained, information into circulation: information about what various Clinton aides and Democratic National Committee officials were thinking during the primaries.

Voters were free to consider this information, or not, and to take account of its illicit origins. At the time, they had good reason to know that Russia had a hand in its dissemination.

Russian hacking came up in two of the presidential debates (although Trump now bizarrely insists it didn’t). Clinton said the hacking was being done for Trump’s benefit. The main thing we have learned since the election, assuming the reporting holds up, is that U.S. intelligence officials agreed

with her about the motive.

Again, Russia’s interference ought to be investigated – as should U.S. cybersecurity practices, and President Barack Obama’s dithering in response to the interference. Americans should be able to agree on the need for further investigation regardless of their sympathies in this election.

Clinton’s supporters, meanwhile, can’t be faulted for regretting the choices that an electoral majority of their fellow citizens made. But the voters had access to the information they needed to put the leaks about the Democrats in context, their choice was made freely, their choices were tabulated accurately, and the result is being decided in the standard way.

Like it or not, Trump was elected legitimately.

Mainstream Republicans think that they’re in control

Mainstream Republicans are buoyed by Donald Trump’s appointments so far, convinced that strategically positioned top officials can freeze out those they consider extremists.

On domestic issues, establishment congressional conservatives believe that an alliance of Vice President Mike Pence, House Speaker Paul Ryan and White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus will encourage the Trump administration to push a conventional Republican agenda. They also are counting on support from Trump’s oldest daughter, Ivanka. The loser, in this view, will be top White House counselor Steve Bannon, a champion of white nationalists and the populist right.

On national security, the betting is that Defense Secretary-designate retired Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis will join forces with Trump’s choice for secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, the chief executive of Exxon-Mobil, to outmaneuver the designated national security adviser, retired Army Lt.

Gen. Mike Flynn. Flynn has drawn criticism for calling Islam “a political ideology,” and ex-colleagues have said they are worried about his volatile temperament.

These Republicans see a historical analogy in the Ronald Reagan administration. Reagan’s first White House chief of staff, James Baker, and his deputy, Mike Deaver, ran circles around Reagan’s right-wing lieutenants led by Ed Meese. Later, Secretary of State George Shultz, with a key ally, first lady Nancy Reagan, set the foreign policy agenda over the objections of hawks such as National Security Adviser William Clark.

But Trump is not Reagan. Unlike his Republican predecessor, the president-elect is a man of few convictions and little interest in policy specifics.

It’s not clear who has his ear or how he’ll resolve disagreements among his advisers.

But Pence, Ryan and Priebus have worked together and share mutual respect. Priebus lacks Baker’s command of politics and policy. But he’s shrewd enough and already is placing key people in White House positions, a step

toward exercising power that seems of little interest to Bannon.

The conservative establishment agenda includes deregulation, big tax and spending cuts, a reasonably ambitious infrastructure plan that doesn’t bust the budget and a replacement for Obamacare that doesn’t take effect for several years. They also hope to avoid aggravating racial divisions and to work around Trump’s campaign promise to deport millions of undocumented foreigners. Ryan and his allies may try to find common ground with some Democrats on a few issues, even if doing so inflames the hard right in the administration and in Congress.

On national security, much of the Republican establishment disdains Flynn, a once-respected tactical commander in Afghanistan who now seems consumed with a bitter hatred of the Obama administration. It fired him from his post as head of the Defense Intelligence Agency. He is virulently anti-Muslim and friendly to Russia.

There is a sense now that Mattis – who has one more star than Flynn – will prove more capable and that

Tillerson, if confirmed, is likely to become an ally of the defense chief.

Tillerson will face a rough confirmation process because of his friendly relationship to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He almost certainly will have to articulate a distinction between his role doing business as CEO of Exxon-Mobil and being America’s top diplomat. He will probably be opposed by most, if not all, Democrats, so his fate could rest with anti-Putin Republican senators such as John McCain and Lindsey Graham.

The anti-establishment Trump camp already is pushing back.

Trump’s advisers, wrote Ann Coulter, a strident right-winger and Trump champion, “include just the type of Republicans whose second-tier law schools make them particularly susceptible to the cheap respectability of establishment media approval.”

Let’s assume that Russia tried to swing the election to Donald Trump.

Newspaper reports say that intelligence officials have reached that conclusion.

Did Russia’s efforts succeed?

Trump backers, and even some conservatives who didn’t back him, are defensive about this point. But Trump’s margin in the electorally decisive states was sufficiently small that his victory can plausibly be attributed to anything that affected a significant number of voters.

It is certainly true, as many conservatives have noted, that Hillary Clinton could still have won the election if she had made different decisions, such as showing up in Wisconsin, refraining from setting up her own email server and so on. But it seems likely that if everything about the election had been the same except for Russian interference, Clinton’s lackluster campaign would have narrowly won those states.

If so, Russia has surreptitiously intervened in our affairs more success-

RUNNER OF THE YEAR Matthew Richtman, jr., Kaneland FIRST TEAM Stephen Poorten, jr., Sycamore Poorten was set to improve upon his 12thplace finish at state as a sophomore when he was diagnosed with a stress fracture three days before state. He had been second in the regional with a season-best 14:55, then took fourth in the sectional in 15:08.

Tanner Chada, sr., Hinckley-Big Rock Chada was fourth at the Class 2A meet this year with a 14:53. He had suffered through injuries the past two years, and recovered from a stress fracture to compete for the state title.

Connor Farrell, sr., Sycamore Farrell ended up posting the Spartans’ best time at the state meet, taking 38th in 15:20 – his best time of the year. He was eighth in the conference race.

Mitchell Bishop, sr., DeKalb Running a season-best time of 15:54 this year, he also was champ of the Burlington Central invite and ended his season with a 46th-place finish at the sectional. He was also all-conference.

Jake Carani, jr., Sycamore Consistent with his splits, his best time of the year was a 15:54 at state, good to take 79th. He was ninth at the conference meet.

Thomas Wuchte, sr., DeKalb He was all-conference this year and had a season-best time of 16:04. He finished 35th at the sectional meet.

“Because Matt is both methodical to his approach, and loves the challenge of racing, I think he will only look forward to the chances to race,” Clarey said. “Given what he was able to accomplish this season, he may have a target on his back, but I don’t know that it was much different than this season.”

For Richtman, the race at the state meet was simply another in a string of strong performances in the postseason. At the Class 2A Burlington Central Regional, he took first (14:52) and was third at the Belvidere Sectional (15:04).

At the Northern Illinois Big 12

Conference Championships, he was crowned the champion (15:08) and was more than four seconds faster than the second-place finisher, Sycamore junior Stephen Poorten.

“I did feel especially strong this whole season,” Richtman said. “Also the postseason and regionals – actually it started with conference and how there was three of us competing for that conference title, so that was the one step that moved me forward and proved that I could do it.”

Richtman came into the season with one unfulfilled goal: placing in the top five in every meet. At the ACC Charger Classic, he took sixth.

He also set a lofty goal to cut 20 seconds off his top time from this past year.

Despite the overwhelming success this season, Richtman said it has been balancing his nerves before the race that has helped him in days such as the state meet.

“I try to use it to help me, but I have to find that balance so I don’t get too nervous to where I can’t think about what I have to do, and what I have to go out and get, and the ones where I’m not nervous enough, then I don’t really have that drive to keep pushing,” he said. “I definitely try to keep a balance.”

MAPLE PARK – Coming down the home stretch of the Class 2A IHSA Boys Cross Country State Championships, Kaneland junior Matt Richtman could see his time on a clock in front of him.

Plowing through the finish line, he made school history by taking fourth place, and is the 2016 Daily Chronicle Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year.

Coming into the race, Richtman had a goal of 14 minutes, 39 seconds for state.

Instead, his fourth-place finish – the best in Kaneland history – came in 14:36, 28 seconds better than the previous best by a Knights runner at Detweiller Park in Peoria, the host site for the state meet.

“It’s so much to think about,” Richtman said of running the final part of the 3-mile race. “Yes, I was the fastest at that event on that course in school history, but just kind of having that desire for next year to get a better time and keep pushing, keep moving up.

“It was extremely exciting crossing the finish line because I was able to see the clock on the right side, and I had set a goal for this year at the beginning that was three seconds slower than I finished at state. That was exciting to hit that.”

Before Richtman’s fourth-place finish, the previous best by a Kaneland runner was Bryant Seraphin, who took seventh in 1989.

Richtman finished behind Grayslake Central brothers Jack Aho (14:12) and Matt Aho (14:27) and Normal University’s Jack Franklin (14:30) – all of whom are seniors.

The next closest runner returning for next season is Sterling junior Jacob Gebhardt, who took seventh place (14:41).

On paper Richtman will return as the favorite – or at least a strong contender – to win the Class 2A state title in 2017.

“It does (cross my mind) from time to time,” Richtman laughed. “I don’t want to think about it too much. I don’t want to have that thought being the top returnee that there’s no competition, because that’s clearly not the case. I still have to work just as hard, if not harder next year, to keep that placement up there.”

Kaneland coach Chad Clarey said they understand that there may be pressure for Richtman next season, but he has confidence in the even-tempered runner.

Thomas continues solid stretch without Porter

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois men’s basketball coach Mark Montgomery has liked what he’s seen from freshman guard Justin Thomas.

Now the freshman guard will be the starter through at least Christmas.

Thomas, one of six Huskies in double figures, made the most of his second consecutive start as Northern Illinois eventually distanced itself from Olivet Nazarene (NAIA) in a 95-69 win Wednesday night at the NIU Convocation Center.

Thomas, a 5-foot-11 guard from Indianapolis, had 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting with five assists and three rebounds and started his second straight game, as sophomore guard Laytwan Porter was not with the team after breaking a team rule.

Montgomery said that Porter, who had one point in seven minutes against Minnesota on Sunday, will miss at least the next two games – at Florida International on Saturday and at South Florida on Tuesday.

“We’re going to re-evaluate it over Christmas, and I’ll see him on the 26th and decide what we’re going to do,” Montgomery said.

Porter also was suspended during the offseason after he was pulled over while driving with a suspended or revoked license and had marijuana in the vehicle on March 30 – two days after the Huskies were eliminated from the Vegas 16 tournament last season.

The suspension of Porter, who is averaging 9.2 points a game, is the third of the season for the Huskies, who have several key underclassmen contributing. Sophomore guard Marshawn Wilson missed two games earlier in the season and freshman guard Eugene German was out against Minnesota for breaking a team rule, although Montgomery said German bounced back with good practices.

Despite the off-the-court issues, Montgomery said there is a maturing process with such an underclassmen-heavy roster.

“When you have a group of mostly freshmen and sophomores, it’s a lot of teachable moments with this group,” Montgomery said. “We only have two seniors in Marin [Maric] and [Aaric Armstead] and they can only do so much. More situations than what we want to deal with, but you know, it’s part of our jobs. It’s part of mentoring and making sure the guys know exactly what we want.”

With Porter out, it could be an opportunity for Thomas to gain more experience as the starting point guard.

In the 77-57 loss at Minnesota on Sunday, Thomas had seven points and six rebounds in 28 minutes, and in the Huskies’ 63-52 loss at Indiana State, he had a team-high 12 points in 21 minutes.

“In the last two games he’s only had two turnovers, and he’s probably getting more comfortable, he’s getting extended minutes,” Montgomery said.

“With the starter out and getting extended minutes, you can make a statement and I think in the last two games he’s made a statement.”

In the past three games, he’s raised his scoring average from 2.4 points a game to 4.7.

“At the start of the game, I was coming off the bench, and coming off the bench, I always had to stay ready,” Thomas said. “Going to starting, I had to get ready off the top. That’s the difference. Everything else is the same.”

Joining Thomas in double figures

on Wednesday was Maric, who had a game-high 22 on 11-for-12 shooting, Armstead (16 points), sophomore wing Levi Bradley (12), senior guard Dontel Highsmith (10) and Eugene German (10).

While Olivet Nazarene (2-10) was coming off a 106-100 overtime loss to Robert Morris (Ill.) on Tuesday, the Tigers actually controlled much of the first half. They had the lead over the Huskies for more than nine minutes in the opening half and built up a lead as large as seven on multiple occasions.

The Huskies didn’t take the lead for good until Thomas hit a jumper with 5:10 left to give them a 31-30 advantage and the Huskies went on a 20-5 run to close the first half up, 47-35.

“We just weren’t defending,” Montgomery said. “They were making shots. They shot 57 percent in the first half. ... We probably came in a little overconfident and thought they were

going to roll over.”

Tyler Crater led three Tigers in double figures with 12 points.

The lopsided win over Olivet Nazarene on Wednesday will be the only time the Huskies are home in a 35-day period, and they won’t play at the NIU Convocation Center until hosting Illinois-Springfield on Dec. 31.

Holland latest southpaw in Sox rotation

The White Sox signed left-handed starter Derek Holland to a one-year, $6 million contract, the club announced Wednesday.

Holland, 30, who has dealt with knee and shoulder injuries over the past three seasons, posted a 4.95 ERA over 1071/3 innings for the Texas Rangers last year. The Rangers declined his $11.5 million option for 2017 and paid him a $1.5 million buyout.

“Derek gives a veteran, left-handed presence for our starting rotation with a proven track record of pitching well in big games,” White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said. “This move provides us with additional depth and flexibility in the rotation.”

So just how does signing a 30-year-

old veteran fit into a rebuild plan?

Depending on his performance, Holland could be flipped to a contending team for prospects during the season in the same way, for example, the Cubs signed 30-year-old right-hander Scott Feldman for an identical $6 million plus incentives in the 2013 offseason before dealing him and Steve Clevenger to the Orioles for Jake Arrieta, Pedro Strop and cash in July.

Holland knows the Sox are rebuilding. For him, it’s an important year to get his career back on track.

“You never know what’s going to lie ahead,’’ Holland said. “I could go out there and have an unbelievable year and end up staying with Chicago and end up being a part of the process and what they’re trying to do.”

Holland is 62-50 with a 4.35 ERA in eight career seasons, his best in 2011

when he went 16-5 with a 3.95 ERA. He pitched a career-high 213 innings with a career-best 3.42 ERA in 2013, but was limited to 37 innings in 2014 and 58⅔ in 2015. He opened the 2016 season in the Rangers’ rotation, going 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA in April before going on the disabled list June 22 with left shoulder inflammation.

Holland had other teams’ interest, with an offer from the Pirates. After talking to first-year Sox manager Rick Renteria and veteran pitching coach Don Cooper before signing, he said he felt wanted.

“Cooper has had a lot of success with some left-handers and getting them back to where they need to be,” Holland said, “and helping them be successful played a huge role in my decision to go forward.”

The Sox, whose trade of five-time

All-Star left-hander Chris Sale to the Red Sox during the Winter Meetings last week started a rebuilding process, may not be done trading from a starting rotation that currently includes Jose Quintana, Miguel Gonzalez, Carlos Rodon and James Shields.

Quintana is the most attractive trade piece on the Sox roster, with the Houston Astros perhaps in the best position to deal. The Astros, who would like to add one starter to their rotation, reportedly balked at a package of major-league right-hander Joe Musgrove plus top prospects Kyle Tucker and Francis Martes for Quintana. Hahn said he’s in no hurry to make more deals.

The Cubs appeared to put the final major touches on their offseason bullpen makeover, announcing Wednesday the signing of free agent righthander Koji Uehara to a one-year contract – a $6 million deal weeks in the making.

Uehara, 41, was the Red Sox closer from 2012 to 2014, winning a World Series with Boston in 2013. He had a 3.45 ERA, seven saves and 63 strikeouts in 47 innings in 2016 – a season in which he held left-handed hitters to a .139 average and .478 OPS (.253 and .812 vs. righties).

That reverse-split performance is what makes Uehara attractive to the Cubs, who have made an offseason out of bolstering their lefty bullpen depth after all three lefties from their World Series bullpen departed (Mike Montgomery to the 2017 rotation and Aroldis Chapman and Travis Wood to free agency).

Team President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein talked near the end of last week’s winter meetings about adding at least one more bullpen arm, “especially one more pitcher who can specialize in getting left-handed hitters out.”

More Darling minutes cause to ponder future

mlazerus@suntimes.com NEW YORK – In the two-plus years before he finally found his way to Chicago, Scott Darling bounced from Louisiana to Mississippi to Florida to Kansas to West Virginia to Ontario to Wisconsin to Ohio to Rockford.

“This is the longest I’ve played for one team in quite some time,” Darling said. “Honestly, it might be the longest I’ve [ever] played for a team. It’s been nice. I’m enjoying it.”

So it’s perfectly understandable why Darling isn’t thinking about what comes next, why he’s choosing to live in the moment. But the Blackhawks backup goaltender will be an unrestricted free agent next season, and due a significant raise from the bargain-basement $587,500 cap hit he currently carries. It’s perhaps a raise the Hawks can’t afford, given their cap issues and their desire to sign Artemi Panarin to a contract extension.

Darling has a .924 save percentage and a 2.29 goals-against average in 56 NHL appearances. He has won a playoff series, briefly grabbing the net from Corey Crawford in the first-round series against Nashville during the 2015 Stanley Cup run. He’s had four stints now as

And his latest run as a No. 1 has been quite the audition for any teams that might be looking for a new goalie next

season. Darling has allowed three goals in his past four starts while Crawford recovers from an appendectomy.

Darling bristled at the idea.

“I’m auditioning for the Blackhawks right now,” the Lemont native said after his latest brilliant effort, a 33-save 2-1 victory over the high-flying Rangers. “I

want to be a Blackhawk. Nobody knows what’s going to happen at the end of the year, especially me. All I know is, if I don’t play good, it’s not going to be easy to be here, or be in the NHL.” It’s an interesting spot for Darling.

He loves playing for his hometown team, and he’s close friends with Crawford. But nobody wants to be a career backup. Every goalie harbors dreams of being the No. 1. And Crawford is one of the best and most accomplished goalies in the league, signed through the 2019-20 season.

Darling can be a starter somewhere.

But it won’t be in Chicago. Not anytime soon.

“I think everybody who’s made it this far hopes to one day be that guy who the team relies on,” said another former Hawks backup, Antti Raanta, who’s been making waves in New York by temporarily supplanting Henrik Lundqvist as the Rangers’ No. 1. “That’s the dream, always.”

The grass isn’t always greener, though. Plenty of goalies over the years have signed with other teams to be a No. 1, and faltered. Brian Elliott left his timeshare in St. Louis to be the man in Calgary, and he currently has a .885 save percentage and a 3.31 GAA, losing the starting job to Chad Johnson.

Bulls move forward after collapse against Thibodeau

That’s what the Bulls were dealing with after their Wednesday practice, fresh off an emotional loss to the Tom Thibodeau-coached Minnesota Timberwolves 17 hours earlier.

By the way, the same Thibodeau that Bulls general manager Gar Forman labeled as having only “some success” as they showed the coach the door back in May 2015, after five seasons of making the playoffs each year he held that seat.

Of course there were going to be lingering questions, starting with watching a 21-point lead evaporate by the end of the third quarter.

“A 21-point lead in your home building, you have to find a way to win those games,” coach Fred Hoiberg said.

“That was the focus for me. It’s a learning opportunity for our team. Hopeful-

ly, we’re better moving forward.”

Hopefully.

What Hoiberg also had to answer to – fairly or unfairly – was if Forman or VP of basketball operations John Paxson expressed their anger toward him or the team Wednesday morning in the aftermath of losing to Thibodeau.

“No, that was not discussed,” Hoiberg said. “The biggest thing that I looked at as I watched [the film] a couple times and laid awake thinking about it was just the lead we gave up.”

Then again, it’s not like Hoiberg was going to offer that information up if it did happen. There’s no way the Bulls front office would want to give that kind of satisfaction to Thibodeau.

“I know there’s an emotional factor tied in,” starting center Robin Lopez said when asked about the loss. “I don’t know if that makes this loss bigger than any others. You’re always concerned when you lose a game, finding patterns, more technical stuff.”

That’s what Wednesday was about.

Or at least what the Bulls want everyone to think Wednesday was about.

More film study, more learning.

The idea of a front office again being shown that their decision-making is detrimental to organizational success was not a topic for discussion.

One point that Lopez did make about his 13-11 team is that they have gotten away from what they were doing last month, when they were playing with a lot more consistency.

“It’s a long season,’’ Lopez said. “I think the vast majority of teams go through stretches like that. It’s a matter of how quickly you can refocus yourself, rededicate yourself.”

Not an easy task with limited practices because of the schedule, and a veteran like Dwyane Wade: very limited in those practices because of his workload.

Coincidentally, it was Derrick Rose’s lack of practicing that bothered Jimmy Butler over the past few seasons, so why is Wade’s schedule OK

with Butler?

According to a source, Butler knows that Wade’s three championship rings at the age of 34 earn him a certain amount of leeway. In Butler’s mind, Rose hadn’t earned anything, and wasn’t doing enough to get closer to changing that.

So what’s the identity of this team as they head into a back-to-back away and home with Milwaukee?

“I definitely think we have an idea,” Lopez said. “I think we’re a very strong defensive team, honestly. We’ve been successful, we’ve been very good at that. We’ve rebounded well, we’ve defended well, especially in transition we’ve guarded pretty well.

“We’ve been pretty successful playing a certain way, and not successful when we deviate from that. I think that it’s really a matter of being consistent with who we are. It sounds simple, but it’s something we all have to do as a group.”

Jeffery watching self in return from suspension

mpotash@suntimes.com Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery insisted “I’ve got nothing to prove to no one” when he returns from a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing subtances.

“I just go out there and do my job and play football and play hard,” he said.

That in itself leaves Jeffery with something to prove – not only to Bears general manager Ryan Pace, but the entire NFL as Jeffery enters another offseason of free agency: Can he stay healthy and clean at the same time?

From a performance standpoint – especially as it pertains to free agency and his next NFL contract – Jeffery’s suspension cost him nothing. He’s still the same Pro Bowl caliber player he’s been since he caught 89 balls for 1,421 yards and seven touchdowns in his second season in 2013.

Nothing he does or doesn’t do in the next three games is likely to change that. Even with Jay Cutler missing five games while Jeffery was eligibile, Jeffery still was on pace for 71 receptions

question about Alshon Jeffery – his availability. Jeffery would not divulge any information on the circumstances of his suspension. But after an injury marred 2015 season in which he played only nine games, it figures that Jeffery

was doing everything he could to stay healthy and for the first nine games, he was. The question is: how far did he have to go?

“I’m not talking about that right now,” Jeffery said when asked if the supplement that led to the suspension was related to him staying healthy. “I said what I had to say about the supplments. I’m just focused on the Green Bay Packers.”

Will it be difficult to stay healthy and legal after the suspension? “I don’t think so,” he said.

Talking with reporters for the first time since the suspension was announced on Nov. 14, Jeffery expounded little on his statement of apology and contrition he released a day after the announcement.

“I’m not going to talk about what happened or who recommended [the supplement],” Jeffery said. “Like I said [in the statement], I’m going to own up to it and I accept the punishment.

At the end of the day, it’s my name on it. So I’m moving forward with it. It is what it is. I learned from it. That’s all I can say.”

‘Rogue One’ doesn’t offer much joy, but Star Wars fans will enjoy it

movie has been made for “Star Wars” fans that finally answers many of the questions they’ve long been asking, having to do with the tensile strength of a franchise that has experienced its share of strain over 40 years, and the ability of artists with new, perhaps iconoclastic visions to bring a faraway galaxy from long ago into a bold new future.

That movie is “Star Wars: Episode VIII” and will be in theaters roughly a year from now.

In the meantime, we have “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Gareth Edwards’s perfectly serviceable, if undistinguished, “Rogue One: placeholder. So many images in “Rogue One” conjure recent films – from “Mad Max: Fury Road” to “Arrival” – that it’s easy to forget that it was that first “Star Wars” installment, back in 1977, that started it all.

To its credit, and like last year’s “The Force Awakens,” “Rogue One” pays homage to the imaginative and physical world that George Lucas and his collaborators built four decades ago. Hewed from the same “used future” aesthetic Lucas so cleverly perfected, the movie has a scruffy, tarnished patina, staging that harks back to wartime classics from the World War II and Vietnam eras, and video-game-like visual flourishes. It fits neatly with the “Star Wars” mythos, especially during its rousing third act and immensely satisfying final moment.

What “Rogue One” doesn’t have is much joy, although viewers can’t say they weren’t warned.

Edwards and Disney executives have made much of the fact that they wanted this stand-alone venture to be “dark,” and is it ever: As “Star Wars” movies go, this one may have the highest body count of them all, above and beyond the Imperial stormtroopers who can be relied on to go out with a desperate Wilhelm scream at least once in a production.

That reassuring callback, as well as several others, is present and accounted for in “Rogue One,” which centers on the story of Jyn (Felicity Jones), a young woman pressed into service by a militant splinter group of the Rebel Alliance to perform espionage against the tyrannical Galactic Empire, which is in the process of inventing the Death Star.

Because this is “Star Wars,” you know that Jyn’s efforts ultimately will involve some kind of ragtag team of plucky misfits. In “Rogue One,” that merry band consists of a rebel intelligence officer named

the warmth and humor of the previous films. By no stretch is this a disaster on a par with Lucas’ misbegotten prequel trilogy. Still, at least until its final section, “Rogue One” lacks the zip, zing and exhilarating sense of return to form that “The Force Awakens” conveyed so lightly.

Jones presents a convincing, if monotonously self-serious, heroine in “Rogue One,” and her uncanny physical resemblance to Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey in the new installments, invites intriguing speculation as to whether and how they may be related. But few of her fellow actors make as vivid an impression, and the fey, soft-spoken Luna is particularly ill-suited to play a rakish man of adventure.

Awards were given to six exceptional art students from DeKalb High

School, Sycamore High School and Kishwaukee College. They are Jessica Lenker, Sydney Goodman, Sarah Klumpp, Morgana Gandsey, Elizabeth Warner and Jordan Nguyen. Recipients were nominated for the award by their teachers for outstanding work

and creativity in different mediums.

KVAL is committed to promoting local artists and dedicated to the development of upcoming artists in the Kishwaukee Valley area. There will be no general meeting in January.

‘Breakfast Club,’ ‘Roger Rabbit’ added to National Film Registry

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – While not usually regarded as a golden age of American cinema, the 1980s produced plenty of popular classics – and a few more of them have now been added to the prestigious National Film Registry.

The Library of Congress announced Wednesday that “The Breakfast Club,” “The Princess Bride” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” are among the 25 movies tapped for preservation this year. They join three other more obscure 1980s titles on this year’s list.

The national library also picked a few more recent favorites, including “Thelma & Louise,” Disney’s “The Lion King” and “Rushmore.”

The library selects movies for preservation in its audio-visual vault in Culpeper, Virginia, because of their cultural, historic or artistic importance. This year’s picks bring the total number of films in the registry to 700. The choices have become increasingly diverse and eclectic since the registry began in 1989.

Still, the library always makes room for some crowd-pleasers.

Considered a feminist landmark for its portrait of women who stand up to abusive partners and find liberation on a crime spree, “Thelma & Louise” achieved a rare distinction when its co-stars, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, were both nominated for the best-actress Oscar.

(Jodie Foster won that year, for “The Silence of the Lambs.”) It’s the third movie directed by the prolific Ridley Scott to join the registry, following “Alien” and “Blade Runner.”

Lauded for its sensitivity, “The Breakfast Club” (1985), from writer-director John Hughes, is the most enduring collaboration of the so-called “Brat Pack,” a short-lived troupe of young stars that included Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy.

Two years later, “The Princess Bride” charmed audiences with its mix of fantasy, action and humor and its innovative screenplay that allowed a young boy (Fred Savage) to provide running commentary on the story.

This year’s other ’80s selections are “The Atomic Cafe” (1982), a compilation of clips about the threat of nuclear war; “The Decline of Western Civilization,” director Penelope Spheeris’ 1981 documentary about the hardcore punk rock scene in Los Angeles; and “Suzanne, Suzanne,” a 1982 documentary short about a black woman’s struggles with addiction.

People in the study with the “fast” gene, which helps the liver to break down caffeine quickly, drank far more coffee than those with the “slow” gene. Researchers think that’s because caffeine leaves their bodies so quickly, it takes a lot more coffee to keep the buzz going.

When scientists separated coffee drinkers into two groups, one with the fast gene and one with the slow gene, they had an aha! moment. The fast gene group of coffee drinkers actually showed a decreased risk of heart attack and hypertension. But people with the slow gene, which lets caffeine linger in the body and create more chemical interactions, had a greater risk of heart attacks and high blood pressure.

So barring a DNA test, how do you know how much coffee a day is safe to drink?

Considering the many types of coffee-based drinks on the market right now, each with a different potency, it’s best to think in milligrams.

Total caffeine in a cup of coffee, for example, can range anywhere from 50 to more than 400 mg. Current wisdom is up to 400 mg of caffeine a day is a safe upper limit for healthy adults. But if even a cup of weak diner coffee gets your heart racing, then decaf – or a glass of water – is the safer bet.

Dear Doctors: Everyone in my partner’s family loves coffee, but I’m like the rest of my family – we can take it or leave it. Is it possible a love of caffeine is in their genes?

Dear Reader: Surprising as it might seem, recent studies suggest that yes, for some people the craving for that first (and second and third) cup of daily coffee actually is built into their DNA. The bigger picture turns out to be even more interesting and a bit complex – so first, a bit of background.

According to the National Institutes of Health, caffeine is the most widely used stimulant in the world. Found in coffee, tea, chocolate, colas, energy drinks and some medications, caffeine gives you a lift because it blocks a brain chemical called adenosine, which causes sleepiness.

Whether coffee is good or bad for you has been a source of conflicting medical opinion.

For every new study that finds the good – increased concentration, elevated mood, decreased risk of some cancers and chronic diseases – there’s another study to highlight the bad. Coffee consumption has been linked to anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart attack.

Is the science on both sides of the caffeine debate wrong, or is it possible something else is going on? Scientists now believe your question hints at the answer. Not only does your DNA decide whether or not you will love coffee, the genes you carry determine how coffee will affect your body and your health.

In a study published in 2014, researchers compared coffee drinking habits among large groups of people of European and African-American descent. They also did genetic studies on each group. What they learned is the ways in which you respond to coffee – whether it wakes you up, makes you jittery, gets you inspired or gives you the shakes – is coded into your genes. Depending on your

a 50-something single man living with my elderly mother. My father passed away a while ago, and the only members of my family left are me, my mom and my older sister, who has a 27-year-old son, “Jeff.” They do not live with us.

My sister has been divorced for 10 years. Jeff and his parents never had a scheduled dinnertime, and they never ate together. Jeff’s meals consisted of whatever he wanted, eaten in his bedroom.

Once a week, my mother makes a nice dinner and invites my sister and nephew over.

The problem is, Jeff never was taught proper table manners. He eats like a caveman, slurps his food and holds the utensils like a 2-year-old.

It’s embarrassing. When I mention this to my mother, she gets on my case about “criticizing” him. She sees the problem, but doesn’t want to say anything for fear of offending him. His mother sees it, too, but does nothing.

Jeff has no girlfriend or significant other at the moment, but if he were to go to any “nice” restaurant, he’d end up looking idiotic.
