At the movies – with communists POLL The Market Square 10 theater in DeKalb is scheduled to reopen today, just in time for people to catch a weekend movie.

News Editor Brett Rowland’s story about the remodeling of the theater – which includes reclining seats, new food options and more – was one of the most-read stories on our website in the past week. Thousands of people read about what’s happening at the local movie theater because movies and the theaters that show them are an important part of our culture, and they’re fun.

I’m curious to see how the new theater looks, and I’m sure I’ll pop in at some point to see whatever flick my daughters want to see.

We might complain about Hollywood, but the truth is that it is an American creation as iconic as blue jeans or rock ‘n’ roll.

Only the theaters where its movies are shown are increasingly owned by Chinese communists.

Market Square is owned by Carmike Cinemas, which is being acquired in a deal valued at $1.2 billion by AMC Entertainment Holdings. AMC is owned by China’s Dalian Wanda Group Co. – a Beijing-based company closely affiliated with China’s ruling Communist Party. When the deal is complete, a communist-run company will own the largest chain of movie theaters in America, with about 660 locations and thousands of screens across America.

Should that matter?

AMC is based in Leawood, Kansas, and CEO Adam Aron told the Wall Street Journal they never give a thought to what’s going on in China. They’re just as American as can be, he said.

AMC plans to invest in and upgrade the Carmike theaters, which are largely in rural and suburban areas like ours in DeKalb. That

sounds good. They also are moving to acquire several theaters in Europe.

The thing about China is its a place where they lock up people for their faith, their political beliefs and other thought crime. They censor movies, the Internet, no form of expression is safe.

The Chinese government controls its citizens. And if its citizens control the largest chain of movie theaters in America, then the Chinese government could control them. If China’s communists found an American-made movie objectionable, why wouldn’t they keep it from being shown in the theaters they control?

But maybe they don’t have to be so direct.

China is a booming market for cinema, and its government already censors films before they appear in Chinese theaters. In reality, if you’re tasked with making a worldwide blockbuster, you’re not going to include a lot of anti-communist statements in your film.

Maybe the day will come when China’s preferences dictate what movies Hollywood’s big studios agree to produce. That would be a shame.

Luckily, there are no communists in charge of this newspaper. But our government should be careful how much interest it allows foreign-owned companies whose governments do not share our values – to have in our media.

Clinton Rosette students’ efforts help get Freezin’ for Food drive started

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Students from Clinton Rosette Middle School were among the first donors at the 16th annual Freezin’ for Food drive Thursday to benefit The Salvation Army.

“We collect food and monetary donations, which go toward buying food for [Salvation Army’s food] pantry, and every dollar donated can go a long way in the overall food that’s collected,” said Roger Lemke, school coordinator for the campaign.

Some of the commodities families need most this year are baby food, diapers and paper products, he said.

The campaign’s 2016 goal is to collect 25,000 pounds of food. By 11 a.m.

Thursday, WLBK-AM program director T.D. Ryan said that 9,530 pounds of goods had been collected.

Student volunteers were driven to WLBK’s Freezin’ for Food drop-off site at the Target/Aldi shopping center near Starbucks in DeKalb where they unloaded their goods and spoke about their efforts on WLBK radio.

Today, Lemke will be coordinating donations from DeKalb School District 428’s Lincoln and Jefferson elementary schools, and Huntley Middle School.

“Companies like Del Monte and Nestlé have come through, along with different organizations around town,” Lemke said. “The event goes around to the whole DeKalb County area, and we like to collect from as many areas as possible.”

Clinton Rosette’s donation efforts were led by Principal Tim Vincent and special education teacher Carol Vest. All student volunteers from Clinton Rosette were members of Builders Club, a community service organization supported by Kiwanis International, which sponsored a food drive for the campaign. Vincent estimated that the school collected more than 150 pounds of food from students.

Khalil Barahaoua, 12, a seventh-grader at Clinton Rosette, said Builders Club members also would be bell-ringing for The Salvation Army on Saturday at the Sycamore Road Wal-Mart. The group then plans to make ornaments and decorations at Barb City Manor Retirement Home in DeKalb next week.

Luminaria vigil honors people affected by cancer

DeKALB – Marlene Bryant is a breast cancer survivor herself, but the person she was thinking about Thursday evening while making a luminaria was her sister, who died of skin cancer at age 68 three years ago.

“I come for all the people who have died of cancer and all the cancer survivors as well,” she said.

Bryant, of Sycamore, was one of about 20 people to participate in Relay for Life of DeKalb County’s fifth annual luminaria vigil.

Organizers brought the vigil inside from the cold this year at the KishHealth System Cancer Center, while past vigils have been outside the DeKalb County Courthouse.

People decorated white paper bags in memory of lost loved ones and in support of those still fighting cancer, and the bags were illuminated with glow sticks while Christmas carols, prayers and poetry were shared in their honor.

The handmade luminaria will return for a vigil in June after Relay for Life of DeKalb County’s main fundraising event for the American Cancer Society.

Bryant said she has attended the summer vigil where the lanterns are placed around the track at Sycamore High School.

“You can go before dusk, and you’ll look at all the bags, and there’s pictures; people write things about their loved ones,” she said. “It’s very touching and quite eye opening to see all the people who have been somehow touched by cancer.”

chance to open the center’s doors to those who may not be familiar with it.

In addition to cancer treatment, the center also has support groups for caregivers and women, and a mixed group for people at any stage of cancer, she said.

“A lot of people that are coming here today are from our support groups, but others are from the community who I’ve never met,” she said. “So, it’s kind of neat we’re mixing the community with the cancer center.”

Prosecutor: Gym instructor may have abused 25 to 30 children

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A local man who worked at Energym Gymnastics may have inappropriately touched 25 to 30 children at the gym’s facilities in Sycamore and Genoa, a DeKalb County prosecutor said Thursday.

Joseph R. Hannon, 21, of the 1700 block of DeKalb Avenue in Sycamore, was charged Thursday with a single count of aggravated crimi-

nal sexual abuse in connection with an incident that occurred Nov. 25 at Energym, 1715 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore. If convicted, he could face three to seven years in prison.

Police in both Sycamore and Genoa continue to investigate Joseph R. Hannon, who is a conHannon victed felon, and are asking anyone who may have been a victim to call the

departments.

“This is still a very active and ongoing investigation,” First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein told a judge during bond hearing Thursday.

Klein pointed out to Judge Philip Montgomery that Hannon also was on probation for a felony drug-dealing charge at the time of the alleged crimes.

In October 2013, Hannon was charged with selling Xanax within 1,000 feet of a senior housing complex

in DeKalb. He eventually pleaded guilty to an amended charge of possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony, and was sentenced to two years of nonreporting probation and 50 hours of community service.

Klein asked that bond be set at $500,000. She said that Hannon had intentionally emptied his bank account after finding out he was under investigation. Hannon would have to post $50,000 bail to be released.

Sexual assault trial of ex-NIU officer to start Monday

First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein will lead the prosecution. The state plans to call three witnesses, including NIU police Cmdr.

Rifkin’s attorney, Bruce Brandwein, plans to call between six and 10 witnesses, including several current and former police officers, his personal investigator, two witnesses who came forward with information that was later the subject of Stuckert’s ruling, former DeKalb County State’s Attorney Clay Campbell, a former state’s attorney who dropped the charges against Rifkin in 2012, a digital forensics expert and Rifkin himself. It wasn’t clear if all of them would testify during trial, but they were ordered to be there.

Judge Brady said flaws in the police investigation would reflect on the credibility of police testimony, but not the testimony of the alleged victim.

“I don’t think it affects the young lady’s testimony as to what happened that night,” Brady said.

Brandwein fought to keep incriminating statements Rifkin made during an interview with police five years ago from the jury, but Brady ruled in June that the statements were voluntary and could be used at trial.

Charges against Rifkin were reinstated in 2013 by incoming State’s Attorney Richard Schmack, who said the victim had not agreed to drop the charges.

Romille L. McCall, 23, of the 600 block of North Annie Glidden Road, DeKalb, was charged Thursday, Dec. 1, with criminal trespass to land and possession of less than 2.5 grams of marijuana.

Deborah A. Williams, 46, of the 1100 block of Rushmoore Drive, DeKalb, was charged Thursday, Dec. 1, with carrying an open container of alcohol in public.

Elizabeth O. Adebanjo, 21, of the 900 block of Ridge Drive, DeKalb, was charged Thursday, Dec. 1, with retail theft.

Princess H. Johnson, 24, of the 900 block of Kimberly Drive, DeKalb, was charged Thursday, Dec. 1, with retail theft.

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Five years after being accused of raping a student, a former Northern Illinois University police officer will face trial beginning Monday.

Andrew Rifkin, 28, is charged with sexually assaulting a woman who was a freshman at NIU at his home in Cortland in October 2011 while he was employed by the NIU police department.

If convicted, Rifkin could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison; probation would not be an option.

The trial is to begin Monday with jury selection.

Although NIU police are forbidden from fraternizing with students, Rifkin and the woman had a consensual sexual relationship. However, prosecutors allege that Rifkin forced the victim to engage in a sex act to which she did not consent.

At a final pretrial hearing Thursday, prosecutors and defense attorneys discussed with Judge William Brady how the case would proceed in front of the jury, going over everything from the number peremptory challenges each side would get during jury selection (seven) to the number of alternate jurors (two).

DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch, who was appointed to represent Hannon, said that Hannon had lived in the area for more than five years and that bond could only be set in the case that Hannon had been charged, not potential charges that haven’t been filed.

The judge set bond at $500,000.

He cited Hannon’s criminal record, which included several misdemeanor offenses, and that he was on felony probation in connection with a 2013 drug case at the time the alleged crime occurred.

Hannon told the judge that he made $1,800 a month working at Energym and lived in an apartment owned by Energym owner Andy Morreale. As an employee, he paid a discounted rent of $600 a month. Hannon told the judge that he was no longer an employee of the gym and likely would not be allowed to live in the apartment, which is near a number of child-focused businesses including the gym, Iddy Biddy Pool School, Sylvan Learning and a day care facility.

Hannon told the judge that it was unlikely he’d be able to post the $50,000 bail. However, the judge ordered that if released, Hannon live with his parents in DeKalb and not have any contact with the alleged

victim or anyone else younger than 18.

While on felony probation for the 2013 drug case, Hannon tested positive for marijuana May 28, 2015. He failed to submit two other drug tests and was recommended for a more structured probation program. He also committed several other misdemeanor crimes.

In August 2013, Hannon was arrested for trespassing on railroad property. In March 2015, he was arrested for stealing a cassette adapter from Wal-Mart in DeKalb, and in August 2015, he was arrested for resisting a police officer and possession of less than 2.5 grams of marijuana.

The Sycamore Police Department is working with the Genoa Police Department, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and staff at Energym, Police Chief Glenn Theriault said. He said the gym’s owner and staff, and all the agencies are being “highly cooperative.”

CHICAGO – The purported leader of Chicago’s notorious Hobos street gang took the stand Thursday at his racketeering trial – one of the biggest in recent city history – to insist he didn’t order a deadly hit on a gang associate-turned-informant to stop him from providing evidence that could put the gang leadership behind bars for life.

The trial, in its third month and expected to end by Christmas, comes as national attention has focused on a spike in Chicago violence, which authorities said frequently stems from gang rivalry; there have been more than 700 homicides this year.

Prosecutors have described Gregory “Bowlegs” Chester and five alleged Hobos subordinates on trial in U.S. District Court as “an all-star team of the worst of the worst” who “terror-

Man denies killing security guard at Canadian National Railway facility near Chicago

HARVEY – A man charged in the fatal shooting of a security guard at a Canadian National Railway facility in suburban Chicago insisted he’s innocent.

Half a dozen sheriff’s deputies carried Rashad Williams into a Markham Courthouse courtroom Wednesday. The 24-year-old man from East Hazel Crest is charged with murder in the Nov. 26 death of 38-year-old Tyrone Hardin of Merrillville, Indiana.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Judge Darron Bowden ordered Williams out of the courtroom and Williams sank to his knees before being dragged out.

But when he first took the stand Wednesday, Chester claimed no such gang as the Hobos even existed despite his full-arm tattoo emblazoned with the words – “Hobo: The Earth Is Our Turf.”

He insisted “hobo” referred not to any gang, but to the nickname of a beloved dead friend.

Illinois DNR says firearm deer harvests are down 8.5 percent this year

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois hunters harvested about 8.5 percent fewer deer during the seven-day firearm season that ended Sunday compared with last year.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday that hunters this year harvested 79,429 deer. That’s compared with the seven days of the firearms season in 2015 when hunters harvested 86,847 deer.

Adams County in western Illinois had the top harvest number at 2,358. The fewest deer were harvested in Lake County in northern Illinois where five deer were taken.

State Crime Commission offers reward to stop dog fighting in DuPage County

CHICAGO – The Illinois State Crime Commission hopes that a $5,000 reward will prompt people with information about dog fighting will come forward.

In a news release, the commission said it is offering the money to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of people taking part in dog fighting in DuPage County.

The commission said a big problem is the theft of dogs to be used as “bait” for the fighting dogs to “practice on.”

It also said that besides stealing from dogs from yards in suburban and rural areas, the people involved in dog fighting find the “bait dogs” on websites where people offer free dogs because they are

by a rare bone disease, saying it was inconceivable someone who struggled to even walk could rise to the top of a Chicago gang.

He described himself Thursday as a one-man drug dealer who smartly invested the illicit profits into a record label, concerts and restaurants.

Chester admitted he swallowed a balloon filled with the drug that a friend slipped to him during an October visit. He told jurors he needed it to deal with painful nerve damage.

Tobacco store manager sentenced in defrauding nearly $400K in tax case

CHICAGO – The manager of a suburban Chicago tobacco shop has pleaded guilty to defrauding the state out of nearly $400,000 and was sentenced to two years in prison.

In a news release, Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office said Tale Aburukbeh of Chicago also was ordered to pay $392,160 in restitution after pleading guilty to filing fraudulent sales tax returns.

The 37-year-old Aburukbeh was charged last year while he was the manager of a Glendale Heights tobacco shop called Valentina #1, which also operated as Valentine Tobacco shop.

Madigan’s office said that between August 2011 and July 2014 Aburukbeh underreported millions of dollars in sales in his state sales tax returns.

Attorney: Roof’s mom had heart attack at trial

The Associated Press CHARLESTON, S.C. – Dylann Roof’s mother suffered a heart attack not long after prosecutors described how her son planned a cold and calculated killing of nine black church members in a racially motivated attack, the white man’s attorney said in court documents Thursday.

Roof’s mother collapsed and said “I’m sorry” several times Wednesday as family members and court security came to help her during the opening of her son’s federal death penalty trial.

Roof’s attorney David Bruck mentioned the heart attack in court documents asking for a mistrial, saying a survivor’s testimony was so emotional that “spectators and even court personnel – including members of the prosecution and defense – were crying with her.”

The documents didn’t give the mother’s current condition.

Later Thursday, in an eerily silent courtroom, 360-degree computer images of the crime scene were shown to the jury. The pictures showed the victims lying in pools of blood on the beige tile floor of the fellowship hall at Emanuel AME Church. Most were clustered around circular tables where they had been holding a Bible study.

Shell casings and ammunition magazines were scattered around as were Bibles and purses. One of the 15 scans showed a wall poster with the words “Faith, Hope and Love.”

Bruck argued in the motion for the mistrial that Wednesday testimony from shooting survivor Felicia Sanders was inappropriate because it seemed to contain a statement on what Roof’s sentence should be.

Sanders told jurors about the horror of seeing her son and her aunt shot to death and sheltering with her granddaughter beneath a table. At one point, she looked across the courtroom toward Roof and called him “evil, evil, evil.”

Bruck asked her on cross-examination whether she remembered Roof saying anything in the aftermath of the shootings.

“He said he was going to kill himself,” she said. “I was counting on that. There’s no place on Earth for him other than the pit of hell.”

U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel denied the mistrial request and said he interpreted Sanders’ testimony as “a religious comment.”

He instructed jurors that any decision on guilt or a sentence is up to the jury – not the attorneys or witnesses in the case.

Also Thursday, jurors watched surveillance footage of Roof leaving a Charleston church with a gun in his hand. Charleston police Sgt. Dan English showed the jury more than 20 video clips taken from cameras at the church on June 17, 2015.

The clips showed many of the victims and Roof entering the church. Roof is seen leaving the church 52 minutes later, and a final clip taken about 25 minutes after that showed one of the victims carried out on a stretcher.

John Glenn, 1st American to orbit Earth, dies

WASHINGTON – John Glenn, whose 1962 flight as the first U.S. astronaut to orbit the Earth made him an all-American hero and propelled him to a long career in the U.S. Senate, died Thursday.

The last survivor of the original Mercury 7 astronauts was 95.

Glenn died at the James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where he was hospitalized for more than a week, said Hank Wilson, communications director for the John Glenn School of Public Affairs.

John Herschel Glenn Jr. had two major career paths that often intersected: flying and politics, and he soared in both of them.

Before he gained fame orbiting the world, he was a fighter pilot in two wars, and as a test pilot, he set a transcontinental speed record. He later served 24 years in the Senate from Ohio. A rare setback was a failed 1984 run for the Democratic presidential nomination.

His long political career enabled him to return to space in the shuttle Discovery at age 77 in 1998, a cosmic victory lap that he relished and turned into a teachable moment about growing old.

He holds the record for the oldest person in space.

More than anything, Glenn was the ultimate and uniquely American space hero: a combat veteran with an easy smile, a strong marriage of 70 years and nerves of steel. Schools, a space center and the Columbus airport were named after him. So were children.

The Soviet Union leaped ahead in space exploration by putting the Sputnik 1 satellite in orbit in 1957, and then John Glenn launched the first man in space, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, in a 108-minute orbital flight on April 12, 1961. After two suborbital flights by Alan Shepard Jr. and Gus Grissom, it was up to Glenn to be the first American to orbit the Earth.

“Godspeed, John Glenn,” fellow astronaut Scott Carpenter radioed just before Glenn thundered off a Cape Canaveral launch pad, now a National Historic Landmark, to a place America had never been. At the time of that Feb. 20, 1962, flight, Glenn was 40 years old.

During the four-hour, 55-minute flight, Glenn uttered a phrase that he would repeat frequently throughout life: “Zero G, and I feel fine.”

“It still seems so vivid to me,” Glenn said in a 2012 interview with The Associated Press on the 50th anniversary of the

flight. “I still can sort of pseudo feel some of those same sensations I had back in those days during launch and all.”

Glenn’s ride in the cramped Friendship 7 capsule had its scary moments.

Sensors showed his heat shield was loose after three orbits, and Mission Control worried he might burn up during re-entry when temperatures reached 3,000 degrees. But the heat shield held.

Glenn was born July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio, and grew up in New Concord, Ohio. His love of flight was lifelong; John Glenn Sr. spoke of the many summer evenings he arrived home to find his son running around the yard with outstretched arms, pretending he was piloting a plane.

Glenn’s goal of becoming a commercial pilot was changed by World War II. He left Muskingum College to join the Naval Air Corps and soon after, the Marines. He became a successful fighter pilot who ran 59 hazardous missions, often as a volunteer or as the requested backup of assigned pilots. A war later, in Korea, he earned the nickname “MiGMad Marine.”

Glenn’s public life began when he broke the transcontinental airspeed record, bursting from Los Angeles to New York City in three hours, 23 minutes and eight seconds. With his F-8 Crusader averaging 725 mph, the 1957 flight proved

the jet could endure stress when pushed to maximum speeds over long distances.

In New York, he got a hero’s welcome – his first tickertape parade. He got another after his flight on Friendship 7.

He first ran for the U.S. Senate in 1964 but left the race when he suffered a concussion after slipping in the bathroom and hitting his head on the tub. He tried again in 1970 but was defeated in the primary.

For the next four years, Glenn devoted his attention to business and investments that made him a multimillionaire. In 1974, Glenn ran for the Senate again and won.

Glenn represented Ohio in the Senate longer than any other senator in the state’s history. He became an expert on nuclear weaponry and was the Senate’s most dogged advocate of nonproliferation. He was the leading supporter of the B-1 bomber when many in Congress doubted the need for it.

Glenn said the lowest point of his life was 1990, when he and four other senators came under scrutiny for their connections to Charles Keating, the notorious financier who eventually served prison time for his role in the costly savings and loan failure of the 1980s. The Senate Ethics Committee cleared Glenn of serious wrongdoing but said he “exercised poor judgment.”

NEW YORK –A decades-long trend of rising life expectancy in the U.S. could be ending: It declined last year and it is no better than it was four years ago.

In most of the years since World War II, life expectancy in the U.S. has inched up, thanks to medical advances, public health campaigns and better nutrition and education.

But last year it slipped, an exceedingly rare event in a year that did not include a major disease outbreak. Other one-year declines occurred in 1993, when the nation was in the throes of the AIDS epidemic, and 1980, the result of an especially nasty flu season.

In 2015, rates for 8 of the 10 leading causes of death rose. Even more troubling to health experts: The U.S. seems to be settling into a trend of no improvement at all.

“With four years, you’re starting to see some indication of something a little more ominous,” said S. Jay Olshansky, a University of Illinois-Chicago public health researcher.

An American born in 2015 is ex-

pected to live 78 years and 9½ months, on average, according to preliminary data released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

An American born in 2014 could expect to live about month longer, and even an American born in 2012 would have been expected to live slightly longer.

In 1950, life expectancy was just more than 68 years.

The U.S. ranks below dozens of other high-income countries in life expectancy, according to the World Bank. It is highest in Japan, at nearly 84 years.

The CDC report is based mainly on 2015 death certificates. There were more than 2.7 million deaths, or about 86,000 more than the previous year.

The increase in raw numbers partly reflects the nation’s growing and aging population.

It was led by an unusual upturn in the death rate from the nation’s leading killer, heart disease. Death rates also increased for chronic lower lung disease, accidental injuries, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, kidney disease and suicide.

The only clear drop was in cancer, the nation’s No. 2 killer.

Help spread the cheer – volunteer With the snow flying and the holiday season kicking into gear, many of us are looking for ways we can give back to our communities.

Even if your wallet isn’t weighing you down, there’s one thing even those of us of relatively modest means can give – our time.

There are many local organizations working to make the holiday season special for the less fortunate, or simply to spread a little cheer, and could use your help.

About 1 in 4 Illinoisans – 2.4 million people – volunteered their time to help others in 2015, according to the federal Corporation for National and Community Service. They contributed more than 268 million hours of service valued at $7.3 billion. More than half of residents, 51.3 percent, also gave $25 or more to charity.

This is an excellent time to find a local organization you can help – either just for the holidays, or better yet, year-round.

In DeKalb, the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program relies on the community not only to donate gifts but also to distribute them to local children. Volunteer opportunities are available for picking up, taking inventory, and distributing gifts at The Salvation Army, 830 Grove St., DeKalb.

The Salvation Army also needs volunteers to assist families who visit its food pantry from 5 to 6:45 p.m. Thursdays. To volunteer, contact Gary Billings at 815-756-4308.

In Sycamore, the Goodfellows also have a major gift-distribution operation that relies on volunteers to donate and to help wrap clothing items for 960 local children whose families have requested them this year.

Wrapping takes place at 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. Saturdays at the Blumen Gardens warehouse, 403 Edward St., Sycamore. They have the supplies ready, and volunteers can show up and work.

People who want to help Goodfellows with its annual gift delivery should arrive before 8 a.m.

Fake news leads to real gunfire “Pizzagate,” as the social-media conspiracy lovers styled it, is the deranged conspiracy theory by which Comet Ping Pong, a popular family pizzeria in northwest Washington, D.C., is the hub of a child-abuse ring run by Hillary Clinton and her campaign chairman, John Podesta. This baseless drivel is fake news at its most patently absurd.

But what is absurd can yield events that are all too real, as on Sunday when a North Carolina man armed with an assault rifle reportedly barged into Comet and fired at least one shot. The man, Edgar Maddison Welch, told police he’d gone to the restaurant to “self-investigate” pizzagate, which took hold in the dark crevices of social media in the days before the election.

It’s tempting to think of fake news as a political dirty trick devised by partisan mischief-makers that caters to ignoramuses in election season. But the Comet Ping Pong incident is a reminder that fake news isn’t only a

distortion of public events, which is bad enough. Fervid conspiracy theorists have seized on anodyne personal emails from the hacked Podesta files to conjure, out of the thinnest air, supposed evidence of a child sex-trafficking ring, with innocent plans for social gatherings transformed into alleged opportunities for pedophilia and names and pictures of innocent parties posted on the internet. Public and private malice is melded.

The crackpots who peddle such stuff include Michael Flynn, the son and top aide to retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who is President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to be the new White House national security adviser. Both Flynns are especially fond of conspiracy theories – the elder one spread similar pedophile nonsense about Clinton, and the younger one called on Comet Ping Pong to disprove a negative by dispelling the pedophile bunk.

They are thereby complicit in fouling the public discourse and

in the incitement that led to Sunday’s attack.

In the case of Comet Ping Pong, the infection has spread down the block, literally, to neighboring shops and businesses that also have received threats for their supposed involvement in child abuse – for no other reason than their proximity to Comet Ping Pong, which itself is guilty of nothing more than occasionally serving a limp pizza.

Beyond the responsibility that social media platforms have shirked in allowing their spaces to be polluted by fiction masquerading as fact, there is little to prevent the spread of fake news.

In Comet Ping Pong’s case, however, two things might help: District of Columbia police should post a uniformed officer at the restaurant. And both Flynns, along with Trump, should visit Comet Ping Pong and order one of its excellent pizzas. We recommend the Jimmy, topped with meatballs.

This was a lie. During his campaign, he banned a growing list of reporters and repeatedly mocked the journalists standing in front of him. He also encouraged supporters at his rallies to taunt the media and call them names.

One photo at a rally showed a Trump supporter wearing a T-shirt promoting lynching of journalists. Do I think Trump supports that? No, but it’s troubling that once the photo went viral, he didn’t denounce this. It’s indisputable that his behavior inspired it.

Journalists and the news organizations that employ them are not about to cave. For all the complaints about media coverage, many of them justified, a large number of journalists, mostly for print organizations, brought close and relentless scrutiny to Trump’s campaign. In this

era of increasingly influential “fake news” sites, they are now doubling down on efforts to provide sound reporting that will still include the fact-checks that Trump so loathes.

How he loves his Twitter account.

Never stops bragging about the freedom to push out whatever misinformation and outright lies that catch his fancy.

He thinks he can get around the media by tweeting, with no apparent concern for the potential harm to Americans and countries around the world.

Even if you find his addiction to Twitter entertaining or dismiss it as a mere distraction, please ask yourself this: Why doesn’t the next president of the United States think he should have to answer any questions that don’t come from a family member or a sycophant? What is he hiding? What does he not want you to know?

Doesn’t it make you feel a little bit better to know that journalists will keep trying? Wouldn’t you rather have all the information and decide for yourself what matters?

If you’re holding a newspaper right now to read my column, it’s possible that I’m the only liberal on this page. Many editorial pages skew more conservative, yet here I am.

Think about what that says about newspapers and the people deciding what

goes on their opinion pages. They may not agree with me, but they publish my opinions anyway because they value the wild tumble of ideas over an echo chamber.

I am grateful, of course, to these newspapers and the online sites that run my column. Keeps me writing for a living. But you, too, are the beneficiary of this policy that trusts you to keep an open mind. This is democracy in action – and isn’t it nice to be so respected?

Less than an hour ago, I finished up my last journalism class for this semester as a professional in residence at Kent State University. It is impossible to be cynical in the company of these millennials. They care about journalism and their future in it, and they care about our country, too.

Many of my journalism students were alarmed by the outcome of the presidential race, but they have quickly rallied.

They understand their role in keeping our country free, and they are eager to join the profession. I take heart in knowing that soon enough, they’ll be out there.

Let’s support them, shall we? Let’s invest in the future of journalism, while we still can.

Sick of the news? This is no time to tune out

In another strange time in American history, the counterculture guru Timothy Leary urged people to “turn on, tune in, drop out.”

Five decades later, it’s time for quite a different formula. In the era of fake news causing real trouble, and of the news media under fire for sins both justified and exaggerated, the better advice is this: Tune in and stay that way.

Since the election of Donald Trump one month ago, and the rush of news that has followed, I’ve heard many people say they need to take a break from what’s happening day-to-day.

Call it news fatigue. They don’t want to hear the latest upsetting developments: For example, the president-elect has nominated for national security adviser a general who pushes conspiracy theories, and a climate change denier to head the Environmental Protection Agency. And, separate from the news itself, many people don’t trust the media

to be an impartial messenger.

As if more proof were necessary of the pollution in the media ecosystem, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg agreed, in a TV appearance Thursday, that fake news and willful propaganda are serious issues, and that social media platforms need to take action. (She added that she does not believe it swayed the election results, a hard-to-prove matter of opinion.)

One political journalist I know described what it’s like to report news at this moment: It’s like covering a “live shooter” situation, she said, but it continues day after day with no end in sight.

What’s a responsible citizen to do?

Evan McMullin, the former CIA operative who ran for president this year as an independent, has some good advice.

He sees the president-elect as dangerous – with some of the same authoritarian behaviors as the dictatorial strongmen whose reigns McMullin saw in his posts around the world.

As he tries to begin building a new conservative movement, McMullin this

week wrote a New York Times opinion piece and a 10-part Twitter series. Here’s No. 2: “Identify and follow many credible sources of news. Be very well-informed and learn to discern truth from untruth.”

And be engaged: “Write, speak, act.”

There are positive signs that some Americans are tuning in. The New York Times and The Washington Post said subscriptions have soared since the election. ProPublica, the investigative-journalism nonprofit, reports a spate of donations.

One Post reader wrote to me recently asking how her family’s foundation could help defend reporters against potential legal challenges. After conferring with Post Executive Editor Marty Baron, I suggested she consider a donation to the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. She got back to me to say that they had done just that – to the tune of $10,000.

None of this is to suggest that the mainstream media, the “legacy press,” is faultless. It certainly isn’t, as is made abundantly clear in a new report from

Harvard’s Shorenstein Center, “How the Press Failed the Voters.” Examining campaign coverage by major newspapers and TV networks, it makes a powerful case that the media often trafficked in false equivalencies between the two major candidates and focused too little on substance.

In short, there’s plenty of blame to go around in this unsettled and unsettling moment. But the answer, surely, isn’t to play the ostrich card.

Which brings us back around to Leary, who offered another piece of advice that holds up better than the one mentioned earlier: Think for yourself and question authority.

Keen awareness – and critical thinking – will matter more than ever in the days ahead. It might be tempting, but whatever you do, don’t drop out.

Consider giving them print or digital subscriptions – or both – to news organizations you regularly count on to provide strong journalism. That includes national newspapers and magazines, as well as regional papers that anchor your communities. Keep in mind public radio and TV stations, too, which always need more financial support.

Now, I understand how you might see this request as self-serving on my part.

I am a journalist, to state the obvious; worse, to state the god-awful for some, I am a columnist paid to give my opinion.

Surely, I have a vested interest in the survival of my profession.

The thing is, so do you.

Regardless of whom we supported for president, it should concern all of us that we are about to enter a period of alarming uncertainty regarding media access to the White House and to the coming administration. So far, we have no reason to believe that Donald Trump will not continue his campaign practice of abuse and avoidance.

Democracy cannot thrive without journalists who hold accountable those elected to protect it.

eKALB – For 10 weeks, Dwayne Lacey made life difficult for opposing quarterbacks.

Then for three straight weeks in this year’s playoffs, Lacey and the DeKalb football team faced teams that ran the option and didn’t throw much.

The defensive end found himself assigned to taking the opposing team’s fullback out of play.

That didn’t stop Lacey from being his usual, disruptive self.

Lacey finished the season with 93 tackles and eight sacks, helping the Barbs reach the state semifinals for the first time since 1980, and was named the 2016 Daily Chronicle Defensive Player of the Year.

The senior said preparation for this year started right after the Barbs lost in the quarterfinals of the Class 6A playoffs to eventual state champ Montini, 49-14 – and even dates to the season-ending playoff loss at Hinsdale

on a couple of plays, including one that resulted in a fourth-quarter interception in a 36-3 win.

“He just had to be disciplined in taking the fullback away,” Weckler said. “That was his responsibility the last three games. He was able to do that, and that took away from his pass pressure a little bit. But at the same time, the teams we play didn’t throw a whole lot either.”

Lacey said it was his teammates who were able to make his production this year possible.

“The other side of the D-line, with Zach Donahue and Nick Diaz, and the unspoken hero is Noah Cooper,” Lacey said. “No one talks about him, but he’s a big guy who demands a double team.

Leman, Barbs have high hopes

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Barely a point and a half separated the DeKalb-Sycamore girls gymnastics team from a state title last season.

Having lost only one athlete from that team, coach Andy Morreale said he thinks the Barbs can make the leap – or at least compete with defending champ Prairie Ridge.

“There’s only one more spot up to go,” Morreale said. “We only lost one athlete from last year, and we’ve gained four new ones. We should be stronger than we were last year.”

The season starts today when the Barbs host a meet at DeKalb High School. It will include Prairie Ridge.

“We got a young team, and I think they’re starting to pull it together,” Morreale said. “I’m really looking forward to this weekend to see where we’re at.”

The Barbs return two gymnasts who finished in the top 10 in the allaround last year – senior Aleah Leman and sophomore Madison Hickey.

Leman was third in the all-around, won the floor exercise, was second on the beam and third in the vault. Hickey was seventh in the all-around, tied for third on the bars and fifth in the floor.

SYCAMORE – For nearly 30 seconds, DeKalb wrestler Ethan Engleson put his weight into trying to get the second shoulder of Sycamore’s Joey Beaudoin onto the mat.

With the clock running down, Engleson finally got the pin with six seconds left in the third period, and the Barbs rolled to a 56-15 victory over rival Sycamore on Thursday night.

“I stopped for a minute and I listened around the crowd and all I heard was screaming and screaming and I knew I had to do something with a short amount of time I had left,” Engelson said. “I just sold out and went as hard as I could and ended up getting him on his back.”

The Barbs (4-2) jumped out with an insurmountable lead, with Engleson’s pin of Beaudoin in the 220-pound

match giving them a 53-0 lead – including seven falls in the first 10 matches.

DeKalb opened with four consecutive pins, with Fabian Lopez (126), Austin Johnson (132), Jakob Norman (138) and Jack Evans (145) giving them a 24-0 advantage.

“We got off to a great start, and we wanted to dominate all the matches and set the tone early,” DeKalb coach Sam Hiatt said. “We did that. The momentum definitely helps when you get started like that, it can kind of snowball a little bit on the other team.”

Although Austin Monk (152) couldn’t stretch the pin streak to five, he did come up with a 20-9 victory for the Barbs.

Keontie McKinney (160) picked up a first-round pin for DeKalb within 30 seconds, and Mills Larenz (195) added a third-round pin for the Barbs.

At 170, DeKalb’s Jacobe Schmerbach turned a 3-0 lead after the first period into a 9-3 advantage with three takedowns in the second before eventually winning 14-4 and flexing after a match that turned chippy early.

In the next match, DeKalb’s Blah Darweih and Sycamore’s Matthew Hunter (182) were tied at 5 late in the second period when Darweih picked up a critical takedown in the final seconds. He added to his lead in the third to win a 10-5 decision. “[DeKalb] did a good job and came out and got the ball rolling,” Sycamore coach Brian Davis said. “They were a better team than us, and we want to close that gap. CHICAGO – Dwyane Wade scored 20 points, and the Bulls handed San Antonio its first road loss after a 13-0 start, hanging on to beat the Spurs, 9591, Thursday night.

San Antonio fell one win shy of matching the NBA’s best road start set by the Golden State Warriors last season. The Spurs cut an 18-point deficit midway Dwyane Wade through the third quarter to four in the closing minutes, only to come up short.

Kawhi Leonard scored 24 for San Antonio. Patty Mills added 16 points, hitting 4 of 6 3-pointers. Former Bull Pau Gasol had 13 points and 10 rebounds in his first game at the United Center since signing with San Antonio in the summer, but the Spurs lost

a road game for the first time since Oklahoma City knocked them out in the Western Conference semifinals last season.

Jimmy Butler scored all of his 13 points for the Bulls in the second half.

Rajon Rondo added 12 points, nine assists and 10 rebounds, and the Bulls picked up the win after dropping three in a row and six of nine.

The Spurs hadn’t dropped a regular-season road game since Denver beat them April 8. But after a big push down the stretch, they came up short in this one.

The Bulls led 65-47 midway through the third after a surge by Butler, who scored seven in a 54-second span after missing his first six shots. But the Spurs jumped back into it in the closing minutes of the quarter.

DeKalb’s Tyler Scarborough was trailing Sycamore’s Justin Montani, 4-1, in the third period and cut it to 4-2 before coming up with a takedown that tied it in the final seconds to force sudden victory.

“I didn’t have much juice left, and I knew that I had to get the takedown, and I knew there wasn’t much time left,” Scarborough said.

In extra time, Scarborough came up with a 6-4 victory and raised his arms to the energetic DeKalb crowd.

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. – The Cubs’ efforts to stockpile bullpen depth continued with reports Thursday they’ve reached agreement with Red Sox free-agent righthander Koji Uehara on a one-year, $4.5 million deal.

Uehara, 41, was the Red Sox’s closer from 2012 to 2014, winning a World Series with Boston in 2013.

He has a 2.53 ERA and one All-Star appearance in eight big-league seasons.

He is attractive to the Cubs in large part because of his effectiveness against lefthanders (.183 career batting against and .555 OPS vs. .208 and .603).

The Cubs last week signed free-agent lefthander Brian Duensing to a one-year, $2 million deal. And this week at the annual winter meetings they traded outfielder Jorge Soler to the Royals for closer Wade Davis.

Strong negative Olympics sentiment among NHL owners

PALM BEACH, Fla. – NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said there’s significant opposition among team owners to continuing participation in the Winter Olympics, and the league is running out of time on negotiations to take part in the 2018 Games.

After a meeting of the league’s Board of Governors on Thursday, Bettman said no decision was made regarding Olympics participation in 2018 in South Korea.

“I think it’s fair to say that there is some strong negative sentiment in the room,” Bettman said. “But nothing was decided today.”

NHL players have competed in the past five Winter Olympics dating to 1998 and want to continue taking part, but owners are concerned about the midseason interruption and injury risk.

The American Urological Association has taken this study into account and varied its recommendations. It does not recommend screening for average-risk men between the ages of 40 to 54, but says higher-risk men – typically those with a family history of prostate cancer or who are African American – may benefit at that age.

For men ages 55 to 69, the association recommends doctors explain the risks and benefits of the PSA test and conduct it every two years. This recommendation changes for men with an elevated PSA, between 4 and 7. In these men, testing should be more frequent to make sure the level does not rise beyond 7, which may be an indication for biopsy. However, if the PSA level is consistently low and at a level of 1 or less by the age of 60, there may be no need for further screening tests.

My feeling is the PSA test is useful for average-risk men ages 55 to 69, but it doesn’t have to be repeated yearly if it is normal. The test could be done every two to four years.

Another variable that may add to decision-making – and take some of the fear out of the follow-up – is the advent of the prostate MRI, which can both detect prostate cancers in men with an elevated PSA and decrease the complications from prostate biopsy.

Dear Doctor: I’m a 45-year-old man. Do I really need a PSA test every year?

Dear Reader: The short answer: Only in certain situations. Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among men, and in an effort to spot it early, doctors long have used the PSA test to measure prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, a glycoprotein produced within the prostate. PSA production increases in prostate cancer, as does the release of the protein into the bloodstream.

Since the inception of the PSA test in 1986, prostate cancer diagnoses have increased so much one in six men now will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetimes. One might think it is a good test, but not so fast.

The PSA test is problematic in three ways.

The first is it will detect many prostate cancers that never will be clinically significant, meaning they will never cause symptoms.

Autopsy studies have shown 30 percent of men have some form of prostate cancer by age 55, and 60 percent of men have prostate cancer by the age of 80. The majority of these cancers would have gone unnoticed, with no ill effects.

The second problem is investigating an elevated PSA with a prostate biopsy can cause significant side effects, including prostate infections, impotence, incontinence and, occasionally, death. These side effects are magnified when a patient has either prostate surgery or radiation treatment for prostate cancer, treatments that may be unnecessary for a low-grade prostate cancer.

The third problem is PSA levels also increase in men who have enlarged or inflamed prostates – but not cancer. Men can be subjected to biopsies and their risks because they have another condition entirely.

Based on these problems, some professional organizations now recommend doctors not perform the PSA test. What appears to counter this logic is a large Eu-
