MALL SANTAS GET AN UPGRADE: A LOOK AT THE HIGH-TECH SETS

The mall Santa experience is getting an upgrade. About 40 malls in the U.S. have installed high-tech settings that let kids tap tablets, play games or take a virtual ride to the North Pole as they make their way to meet Santa.

You can still pay to take a traditional photo with Santa, but most malls say you can go through without paying for a photo package.

SANTA HQ What it has: The set, sponsored by cable TV channel HGTV, uses augmented reality technology and tablets to make it appear like cartoon elves are popping out of the walls. Kids can also paste their selfies on a dancing elf.

Where: 15 malls, including Washington Square in Portland, Oregon; The Oaks in Thousand Oaks, California; and Scottsdale Fashion Square in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Sycamore veteran recalls Pearl Harbor attack 75 years later

SYCAMORE – Burton Miller was on his way to eat breakfast when the first bombs of the Pearl Harbor attack were dropped on his Army Air Forces base.

On Dec. 7, 1941, 19-year-old Burton Miller and his 17-year-old brother, Wayne, were stationed at Wheeler Field in Hawaii – one of the first places the Japanese attacked.

It was a bright Sunday morning, compelling Burton to break his usual routine and get up for breakfast. Meanwhile, Wayne was in the barracks taking a shower.

“I got up and went up for breakfast for the first time, and I got through the breakfast door, and a bomb comes down right next to me,” Burton said. “And it hits the lawn, and it didn’t hit the street, so I started running because they said that [the Japanese] were going to land troops there.”

Burton, 95, has lived in Sycamore for the past four years with his wife, Berniece, also 95. Wayne died in 2011 at age 88.

A total of 33 men died at Wheeler Field that day. In all, more than 2,300 U.S. service members were killed when Japanese planes struck the naval base in Hawaii in an attack that dragged the U.S. into World War II. Both brothers survived the attack, but they wouldn’t see each other for another three days, as the men hid, believing Japanese troops planned to invade the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Their mother wouldn’t get word of their survival until a month later.

Bruce Miller, Burton’s son, said his father and uncle enlisted in the Army Air Corps after seeing an ad in their local newspaper in Mount Vernon. They had been in Hawaii less than a year before the attack.

“The ad said to sign up for four years in the Army Air Corps and spend three years in Hawaii,” Bruce said. “This was 1940; they had no idea what was coming, and they thought, ‘What could be better?’

The Army Air Corps became the Army Air Forces on June 20, 1941.

“We had to lie a little bit [about Wayne’s age],” Burton said.

Wayne’s job at the time was outfitting men with parachutes, so he was tasked with identifying bodies based on their parachute numbers. “[Wayne] was down at one of the hangars that they had converted into a morgue, and he was going

through looking for his brother,” Bruce said.

Burton was stationed in Hawaii for two years after the attack.

“The rest of the two years was like heaven,” Burton said. “It rained every other day. It could’ve been worse, and it was worse in Belgium.”

Burton went on to serve in England, France and Belgium, where

he conveyed orders and communications during the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive campaign of World War II. One of the barracks in Belgium was an old chicken house where soldiers had to endure the cold winter.

“I had six blankets and I couldn’t get warm,” Burton remembered.

Burton then had to go to the hospital, although he said he can’t recall why.

“That was after Hitler took over Europe,” he said. “We had our fighter planes that went from England to France and then up to Belgium supporting our troops, chasing Hitler at the time. And when I got to Belgium, I had to go to the hospital, and when I come back, the war was over.”

Burton married Berniece in 1946, nearly 71 years ago. The couple lived in Chicago for about 60 years.

Berniece said she worked making soldiers uniforms during the war, while men would work on farms and in factories.

“All of our foods were rationed, and we had food stamps,” Berniece said. “You could only get so much gas and so much everything at that time.”

She said they first lived in a one-room apartment, had no car and were on a waiting list to get a refrigerator. She had to take three street cars, each costing 8 cents, to get to her job at Marshall Field’s.

“We went down the hall to go to the bathroom where four families shared. It was rough,” she said. “We were able to get an apartment over a home, so we thought we were in heaven to get that because it had a bedroom and a living room.”

Karen Narayan, daughter of Burton and Wayne’s oldest brother, Ernest, who served in the Navy during World War II, said she recalled a story about Wayne fighting unarmed against Japanese soldiers in Saipan in which he disguised himself in blood from another soldier and played dead until the Japanese left hours later.

“I asked Uncle Wayne, ‘How could you do all this?’ ” Narayan said. “His reply was, ‘Karen, just as you go to the grocery store shopping, we just did. We didn’t think about what we were doing, we just did.’ ”

People pack DeKalb High School for the DeKalb County Permanence Action Team’s biannual resource fair Tuesday in DeKalb. There were many tables available with resources for a variety of topics, and attendees were treated to a free hot meal, free food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank and free clothing.

Resource groups reach out to county residents

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois Food Bank was prepared to distribute food for 175 families in need Tuesday as part of the DeKalb County Permanency Action Team’s biannual resource fair.

“We cover 13 counties, so any county that needs help, we’re there,” food truck driver Jessie Perez said.

The mobile food pantry was only one component of the resource fair hosted at DeKalb High School.

People could also enjoy a hot meal and gather information about services offered by the various DeKalb County resource groups set up in the school’s cafeteria, such as Red Cross, Safe Passage, Family Service Agency and Barb Food Mart Pantry, among others.

Perez said the mobile food pantry will go anywhere it is needed in the community, and it provides “food food” rather than only canned food.

“We got cereal, we got pizza, we got a variety of meats, potatoes, carrots, oranges, salads,” he said. “We try to hit all the food groups.”

Darianna Mahaffey, Permanency Action Team member and organizer, said the resource fair was developed through the Department of Child and Family Services.

“We found that it was a high number of African-American children that were in foster care compared to their white counterparts, so what we’re doing is trying to establish preventative measures,” she said. “Doing the re-

source fair is one of those, so that people who are new to the area or have been here in the area, they know about the different resources that are here.”

Mahaffey said offering the food pantry and hot meals is especially significant during the winter months, although food assistance is also provided during the May resource fair.

“The holiday season is here, so you have people who are between buying their kids Christmas gifts and having food, or keeping the lights on and having food,” she said. “So this is another way people can help to supplement that.”

Chuck Dorothy, a foster parent recruiter with DCFS, was at the fair talking with people about the requirements and process of becoming a foster parent.

“A lot of people aren’t here to necessarily become a foster parent, but it’s good to see that people sign up to get more information,” he said. “We let them know that we’re here.”

Dorothy said DCFS has set up an informational booth and children’s games at the DeKalb Corn Fest and other community events in the past.

“Hopefully by doing an outreach, people who have been thinking about being a foster parent will actually become foster parents,” he said.

Mahaffey said more resource groups participate in the fair every year.

“We really try to cover the broad spectrum of everybody,” she said. “If it’s a need, we try to cover that need and provide that resource.”

Traffic enforcement leads to 39 seat belt citations

DeKALB – The DeKalb Police Department issued 39 seat-belt citations during a recent Thanksgiving traffic enforcement campaign.

During the Click It or Ticket mobilization from Nov. 14-27, the department caught five speeders, five people driving with a suspended or revoked license and nine uninsured drivers, and made one felony arrest, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department.

The campaign was funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Malta officials hope first permit in years a start

eolson@shawmedia.com MALTA – The village issued its first permit for a new home in nine years in November, and officials are hopeful it is a sign that growth will begin once again.

The home, a three-bedroom, two-story house, will be built in the 150-acre Prairie Springs subdivision. The property off South Malta Road west of the village, which includes a 22-acre lake and 7-acre park, is Malta’s best hope for growth in the future.

“It’s been nine years since we’ve been able to issue a building permit, so I guess you could say baby steps would be ideal,” Malta Village President Bob Iversen said. “If we could get 10 permits from now until the end of [2017], that would be achievable.”

Development was derailed in Prairie Springs when the housing market collapsed. Eagle Homes, the developer that built about 70 houses there, lost the subdivision to foreclosure. In 2010, Pete Harkness of Sterling, a businessman who grew up in Malta and graduated from DeKalb High School, bought the property from a bank.

Since then, Harkness Lake has been expanded, and partially completed homes on the property have been finished and sold. But last month was the first time someone has bought a lot and begun building a home on it since Eagle owned the property.

Lots in the subdivision range in size from 7,200 to 8,500 square feet. Homes must be at least 1,600 square feet, village Comptroller Debbie Lang said.

Prairie Springs was Harkness’ idea to begin with. He took plans for a subdivision around a lake to Malta village officials around 2000, and eventually they were approved.

“Everybody told me not to do it because the village hadn’t grown in 100 years and it would never happen, but when someone tells me not to do something, that’s usually when I do it,” Harkness said.

Harkness, whose family ran the old Needles and Cones Christmas Tree Farm in Malta, said there are 69 lots with municipal water and sewer access ready for sale right now: some with lake views, others with park views, others on the outskirts. There is no developer with exclusive rights to build homes in Prairie Springs, allowing buyers flexibility in who builds the home and how it looks.

The people already living there enjoy living in a country atmosphere with easy access DeKalb, Interstate 88 and other amenities.

“If you talk to the people located out there, they’re very happy with that subdivision. It’s very family friendly,” Harkness said. “Now that we’ve broken ground with the first lot, that’s the momentum that we needed to continue to sell lots and continue to build that subdivision out.”

Lice policy proposed to District 428 board

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A formal policy to address cases of head lice within DeKalb School District 428 schools was proposed Tuesday during the district’s board meeting.

The proposal was created from recommendations by groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Association of School Nurses and the DeKalb Health Department on how to identify and treat lice.

“There are certain road blocks with parents, such as education on how to eradicate the issue and there could be a financial burden as well, so we are putting together ways to support families with financial challenges and provide guidance,” said Cristy Meyer, director

of student services for District 428, who presented the policy to the board.

Meyer added that nurses identify four to five case a year in larger schools but acknowledge that there could be more.

The policy calls for affected students to remain in school as they are being treated. It also states that only when three or more lice cases are confirmed within one grade level will health care staff send notes alerting parents of the situation. Meyer said that alerting people of a single case would violate the confidentiality.

Wendy Rhoads, a mother of three with a child at Cortland Elementary School, said the policy is not sufficient to control the spread of lice within the school district and that parents should

be notified every time a case is confirmed.

“Parents are very unhappy with this policy. It’s a Band-Aid on a big wound,” Rhoads said. “It’s not going to stop the problem or keep it from being an epidemic, which it already is.”

To prevent the potential spread of lice, Rhoads suggested in her own drafted lice policy that an affected student should not be allowed to return to school until all live lice is removed.

The District 428 board recommended introducing a new proposal during the next meeting that takes into consideration the concerns of board members and parents.

“Our concerns are our communities’ concerns,” board member Howard Solomon said.

Illinois budget still elusive as leaders lash out

The Associated Press CHICAGO – As Illinois remains without a budget, legislative leaders and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner are succeeding more at frustrating each other than at striking a deal to end an 18-month budget impasse that is damaging the state’s fiscal health every day.

The relationship between ruling Democrats, Republican leaders, and the governor has only grown more toxic after several meetings where both sides are more likely to lash out at each other than to report meaningful progress in passing a full budget that’s been overdue since July 1, 2015. The finger-pointing gives little hope legislative leaders can get a budget done by year’s end when a six-month partial spending plan expires, leaving some social service providers struggling to stay open, and colleges and universities facing an uncertain future.

Illinois to mark 75 years since attack on Pearl Harbor

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois will mark the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and honor the men and women who died there with a ceremony in Springfield.

The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs said the event is scheduled for Wednesday at the Disabled American Veterans Hall. It will include the reading of a proclamation signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner and a wreath laying in the waters of Lake Springfield.

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he has spoken to President-elect Donald Trump by telephone and mentioned Chicago’s status as a sanctuary city for immigrants.

Emanuel said Trump called him to talk about the White House transition. Emanuel is a former White House chief of staff to President Barack Obama and also worked in the Clinton administration.

Emanuel spoke about the call at an unrelated event Monday. The mayor said he discussed “a range of things” with Trump.

Wisconsin woman dies in wrong-way crash in Illinois

SOUTH BELOIT – Authorities said a 78-year-old Wisconsin woman died after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 90 in northern Illinois.

Illinois State Police said the woman from Janesville was driving a car traveling east in the westbound lanes of the freeway near the South Beloit Toll Plaza in Winnebago County on Monday when she collided head-on with another vehicle. Police said the woman died at the scene.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – President-elect Donald Trump, a political newcomer who touts his corporate skills, turned businessman-in-chief Tuesday, first demanding the government cancel a multibillion-dollar order for new presidential planes and then hailing a Japanese company’s commitment to invest billions in the U.S. “We will defend American jobs. We have to look at it almost like a war,” Trump thundered in North Carolina, vowing to keep companies from moving overseas during the second stop of his “thank you” tour to salute his supporters. “We want the next generation of innovation and production to happen right here in America.”

Trump was far less bombastic than during the tour’s kickoff in Ohio last week, striking more of the healing notes traditionally delivered by a president-to-be in the weeks after a bruising election.

“We will heal our divisions and unify our country. When Americans are unified there is nothing we cannot do – nothing!” he told the crowd in Fayetteville. “I’m asking you to dream big again as Americans. I’m asking you to believe in yourselves.”

The Republican businessman largely stuck to the script Tuesday – and, in a change, even stopped the crowd when it started to boo the media – and avoided some of the score-settling and scorched-earth rhetoric that defined his campaign and was present again last week in Cincinnati. Trump – who also tweeted the deal – shook Son’s hand and posed for photos, reveling as he had last week when he toured a Carrier plant in Indiana where he said he had instigated an agreement that will preserve about 1,000 jobs the appliance maker had planned to move to Mexico. As for Air Force One, the government has agreed that Boeing will build two new planes, which would go into service around 2024.

That means Trump might never fly on the aircraft, which carry U.S. presidents around the globe.

The Air Force has pressed for a faster schedule, saying the aging current Boeing 747s are becoming too expensive to repair and keep in good flying shape. The overall deal for researching, developing and building new planes was to be about $3 billion, but costs have been reported to be rising.

Official: Refrigerator could be source of Calif. fire

OAKLAND, Calif. – Investigators said Tuesday that a warehouse fire in Oakland that killed 36 people did not appear to have been set intentionally and may have been caused by a refrigerator or other electrical appliance.

Details about a possible cause emerged as fire crews nearly completed their search for bodies in the most lethal building fire in the U.S. in more than a decade. The death toll remained at 36 and was not expected to go higher.

Tearful family members visited the scene and exchanged hugs hours after the founder of the arts collective that used the warehouse stood near the gutted building and said he was “incredibly sorry.”

“Everything that I did was to make this a stronger and more beautiful community and to bring people together,” Derick Ion Almena told the “Today Show” on NBC. Almena said he was at the site to put his face and his body in front of the scene, but he deflected blame for the blaze, saying he signed a lease for the building that “was to city standards supposedly.”

The fire broke out during a dance party Friday night in the cluttered warehouse. It had been converted to artists’ studios and illegal living spaces,

A refrigerator was a potential source of the fire, but it was too soon to say for sure, said Jill Snyder, special agent in charge of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

ing at “anything electrical” on the first floor of the warehouse near the origin of the blaze.

“We have no indication that this was intentionally set,” she said.

Almena did not respond to emails or calls to phone numbers associated with him by The Associated Press.

Friday night and that he and his wife had decided to stay at a hotel because he was exhausted.

City and state officials fielded years of complaints about dangerous conditions, drugs, neglected children, trash, thefts and squabbles at the warehouse, raising questions about why it wasn’t shut down. The district attorney warned of possible murder charges as she determines whether there were any crimes linked to the blaze.

Crews had searched 90 percent of the building known as the “Ghost Ship” for bodies as of Tuesday afternoon and were expecting to complete the rest of the search by midnight. Fire officials started knocking down parts of the building that they said were structurally unsound.

Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy Tya Modeste said of the 36 victims found, 26 of their families have been notified. Another nine bodies have been “tentatively identified,” she said. Officials are still lacking any type of identity for one individual.

Stories of the victims’ last minutes, meanwhile, emerged.

Alameda County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly said that some of the victims texted relatives, “I’m going to die,” and “I love you.”

Rescue crews found bodies of people “protecting each other, holding each other,” Kelly said.

Mistrial in S.C. police shooting case mystifies observers

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The video was unambiguous: A white police officer fatally shot an unarmed black man in the back as the man ran away.

But a South Carolina jury was unable to agree on a verdict in one of the nation’s ghastliest police shootings, with a lone holdout forcing a mistrial. The outcome stung many African-Americans and others. If that kind of evidence can’t produce a conviction, they asked, what can?

“There’s a jury full of people and they cannot decide if it’s illegal to shoot someone who is running away from you?” said activist Johnetta Elzie, who is black. “What do you say about a country that feels this way about black people? If you can’t see the humanity in that, I don’t know what we’re talking about anymore.”

Prosecutors plan to retry officer Michael Slager, who is scheduled to be tried separately next year on federal charges that he violated Walter Scott’s civil rights.

North Charleston city officials approved a $6.5 million civil settlement for Scott’s family earlier this year.

Slager remains free on bail.

South Carolina Republican Gov. Nikki Haley voiced her support for Scott’s family, saying in a statement that justice “is not always immediate, but we must all have faith that it will be served.”

Scott, 50, was killed in April 2015 after he was shot five times. A barber on his way to work recorded the slay- Michael ing on his cellphone.

Slager The panel of 11 white jurors and one black juror deliberated for 22 hours.

At one point, a juror sent a letter directly to the judge saying he could not “with good conscience approve a guilty verdict” and that he was unlikely to change his mind.

As they weighed their decision, jurors also asked the judge to explain the legal difference between fear and passion and inquired whether the self-defense standard was the same for offi-

cers as ordinary citizens.

NAACP President Cornell Brooks called the jury’s decision “a disappointing delay in the delivery of justice.”

Hours after the mistrial, a tweet from three Black Lives Matter co-founders said, “Some days the hashtag is too painful to participate in.”

Elzie, one of the first protesters in Ferguson, Missouri, after the fatal 2014 shooting of Michael Brown by a white officer, said word of the hung jury left her numb.

“When it comes to justice and black people in America, I don’t expect it,” she said with a sigh.

Randall Kennedy, a black Harvard University law professor and author of several books on race relations, had difficulty reconciling the law with the mistrial, which he called “frightening.”

“It appeared as though it was open and shut,” said Kennedy, a native of Columbia, South Carolina. “Obviously, this is a case of some criminal action on the part of this police officer. Is it at all plausible that you have a man running and a police officer says, ‘I’m firing in self-defense?’ ”

He added: “It’s at this point that people are truly exasperated and say, ‘Do we really have anything that can seriously be called the administration of criminal justice?’ Can we reach people? Are people even persuadable?”

On the day after the mistrial, Charles Witherspoon sat in the main library in Columbia, reading the newspaper.

He followed the trial closely and is well-versed in the facts of the case, like the 17 feet that separated Scott and the officer when he began firing at Scott.

Witherspoon, who is black, had no doubt Slager was guilty of murder, but the mistrial did not come as a surprise.

It’s an outcome the 54-year-old South Carolina native has come to expect.

“Murder is murder – unless you are a police officer,” he said. “Someone is always going to find a way out for a police officer.”

National Action Network South Carolina President James Johnson urged people to give the second trial a chance before they get angry. He said he heard rumors of people threatening to “burn” Charleston, but he does not think it will happen.

DeKalb must make tough budget choices It has been a dramatic budgeting season in the city of DeKalb.

There have been warnings from city staff that with any more cuts, the city might not be able to afford enough bullets for its police. When prodded to reduce spending further, staff suggested slashing the amount the city provides to social service agencies that serve battered and impoverished women and children and the homeless, as well as organizations that promote tourism and economic development.

What was never suggested were any cuts to the city’s workforce, or any freeze or reduction in their pay (all city employees are to receive raises next year.)

That would only be done as a last resort, City Manager Anne Marie Gaura explained at a meeting last week.

Right or wrong, this gives the impression that maintaining staffing at its current level, with raises intact, is more important than the city funding the social service agencies that serve its population. At a meeting last week, 1st Ward Alderman David Jacobson called out city staff members for intentionally trying to stir up public opposition to spending cuts by offering up only the most painful options – kind of like a school district that threatens to eliminate athletic programs if taxpayers say no to a tax increase.

“To come up with those cuts right now, you should be ashamed of yourselves, honestly, because there was no way we were going to vote for those things and you knew that,” Jacobson said.

Jacobson would later make a proposal that would have required the city to cut $236,000 from its spending on personnel rather than social services and other outside spending, a measure that was defeated when Mayor John Rey cast a “no” vote to deadlock the council at 4-4.

But staff members were directed to come up with another $236,000 in spending reductions from somewhere to keep the city on pace to build a reserve fund of about $9 million, about 25 percent of its general fund expenses.

We will wait to see what suggestions they have.

It is not as if spending has not been reduced considerably already. Gaura points out that more than $1.7 million was cut from the spending plans of various city departments already.

However, the city is facing the same pressure plaguing Illinois – rising pension costs. The police and fire pensions, the only item of city spending for which people pay property taxes, are growing each year, with no reform or relief seen on the horizon. This is placing an ever-greater demand on the city’s budget, which still lacks any provision for repairing roads not in tax-increment financing districts or other capital improvement plans.

We don’t wish for anyone to have to take a pay cut or pay freeze, or to lose their job – but these are necessary considerations when the alternative is not buying bullets or cutting assistance for the most vulnerable residents.

If employees not covered by labor contracts must make concessions now, others will have to later.

Perhaps if the pension crisis becomes so dire that it is affecting the pay and benefits of current government employees, some of the resistance to reform will fall away.

A doctor in charge of HUD? It was less than a month ago that a spokesman for retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson told reporters that the erstwhile GOP presidential candidate would not be serving the Trump administration in anything but an unofficial advisory capacity.

“Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience,” Armstrong Williams said, “he’s never run a federal agency. The last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency.”

On that basis alone, President-elect Donald Trump’s announcement Monday that Carson would be his choice to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development was baffling. Add the fact that Carson has no relevant expertise whatsoever (secretary of health and human services, the previous job for which the highly accomplished physician was mentioned, might have been a different story) and Trump’s pick goes well beyond baffling.

To be sure, HUD’s mission, in large part, is to help the urban poor through administering public housing, distributing rental-assistance vouchers and other programs; Carson’s Detroit boyhood certainly taught him what it is like to grow up poor in a segregated big city and to succeed against the odds. No doubt, too, the half-century-old HUD bureaucracy’s record is mixed at best, with more than a few scandals involving its various grants and subsidies.

In that sense, a Republican administration could be expected to seek someone with fresh free-market-oriented policy alternatives.

Carson, however, comes equipped with little more than the generalities about abolishing “dependency” that he spouted on the campaign trail.

In an op-ed last year, he called new Obama

administration regulations linking housing aid to more ambitious neighborhood desegregation efforts “government- engineered attempts to legislate racial equality” and suggested that they would be “downright dangerous.”

As HUD secretary, he would be in charge of federal fair-housing enforcement.

Carson’s nomination is the second puzzling sign about where housing policy might be headed under the Trump administration.

The first was Treasury Secretary-designate Steven Mnuchin’s comment that “we’ve got to get Fannie [Mae] and Freddie [Mac] out of government ownership. It makes no sense that these are owned by the government and have been controlled by the government for as long as they have.”

That could mean Mnuchin will argue for a total overhaul of the government’s mortgage guarantee business that finally ends the system of private gain, public risk that prevailed before the government took over the failing Fannie and Fred in 2008.

Or, it could be interpreted as support for the efforts, so far thwarted by courts and Congress, of hedge funds to make a killing through a Treasury-blessed “privatization.”

Certainly it would help if the next HUD secretary were an expert on the housing market capable of weighing in against the more dubious plans being floated for Fannie and Freddie.

Carson needs to be given a thorough, searching examination by the Senate over his approach to housing policy, which, though certainly not brain surgery, does present complexities that would challenge a nominee far more experienced than he.

Journalism’s hard year draws to a close This has probably not, in fact, been the worst year in the history of American journalism.

But you’ll forgive me if it feels that way just the same.

It was, after all, a year in which the country firmly entered the post-factual era, led by an incoming president who has no time for intelligence reports, yet is a devotee of a conspiracy website that claims symbols on a pizza menu are used by pedophiles to send messages. This same guy spent much of the year castigating journalists as “dummies,” “slime,” “disgusting,” “lame,” “sad,” and “the lowest form of life,” all of it eaten up by mobs that snarled and snapped at the traveling press corps, who stood penned up at his rallies like that goat lowered into the Tyrannosaur paddock in “Jurassic Park.”

So yes, a grueling year. And it seems to me, in this season of thanksgiving, that the best way to end that year is to thank my reporter colleagues for all they do to inform a nation that, increasingly, chooses not to be informed.

VIEWS Leonard Pitts Lest you think I sprain my arm to pat my own back, I hasten to say that the above does not refer to me.

Though I do occasional reporting, I am not a reporter, but a columnist. A political cartoonist I once met described people like us as “professional reactors.” That is, a thing happens, real reporters gather the facts of that thing, and then we opine upon those facts.

Everybody opines, of course. But sometimes, we forget that the information upon which we do so does not simply produce itself. The facts upon which both the barstool philosopher and the columnist rely, the facts Sean Hannity mangles and Donald Trump simply ignores, come to us through the efforts of men and women who dig for them, who work phones, finesse sources, burrow into transcripts, ask powerful people impolite questions.

And sometimes, die.

Worldwide, the Committee to Protect Journalists reports that more than 1,200 journalists have been killed since 1992. According to Reporters without Borders, 81 were killed last year alone.

The United States has been largely spared those outrages. Yet they provide a chilling context for the anti-media frenzy so gleefully generated by the incoming president.

Not that news media were universally beloved before he came to town.

In a nation of stark political polarization, claims of bias – a word too often defined as, “that which is mean (though not unfactual) toward my preferred candidate or ideology” – have made media-bashing the fastest-growing sport in America.

Some of it is certainly deserved.

Sometimes, news media are too timid, too obsessed with ephemera. And, yes, biased.

But then, there is this: On Sept. 11, an army of police and firefighters famously rushed toward the danger. Less well-remembered

is the army of reporters who did the same. My former colleague, Elinor J. Brecher, was one of them. Ellie might be 5-feet tall if she jumped. She might weigh 110 pounds if she tied cinder blocks to her feet.

Yet, there she was, this small woman, down there in the wreckage of the World Trade Center with the rescue workers and survivors, gathering the news. From time to time, I reread the powerful and evocative essay she wrote about it as a reminder of what my colleagues do.

That is, they go where the story is, even if that’s dangerous, even if it defies self-preservation. And they produce the facts that help those of us who still want to, to comprehend our world.

As journalism’s hard year draws to a close, I think that deserves my gratitude. Frankly, it deserves yours, too.

When the checkout lines at the store go away

Have you watched that new video of Amazon Go, the store in test mode in Seattle where you just pick up stuff (prepared food and drinks, mostly) and walk out? I have, again and again. It’s pretty hypnotic, especially with the sound off.

The gist of it is that you scan in with an app on your phone as you walk into the store, grab whatever you want -- and leave. “Computer vision,” “deep learning algorithms” and “sensor fusion” figure out what you’ve taken and charge you for it.

As lots of people have been pointing out on Twitter, this is not a new vision. IBM produced a similar, albeit funnier, commercial about a checkout-free grocery store a decade ago. Still, that store didn’t actually exist. Amazon Go does, has plans to open to the public early next year and could, according to the Wall Street Journal, be the first

of 2,000 grocery stores of various formats that Amazon opens. Even if Amazon mucks this up, the ubiquity of smartphones and the increasing smartness of product labels seems to point toward somebody figuring this out sometime soon.

From a consumer perspective, it certainly looks appealing. Checkout is the most aggravating part of shopping – and today’s automated checkout machines generally don’t improve the experience at all.

But what about the jobs? Almost 3.5 million people were working as cashiers in the U.S. last year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about 2.3 percent of total employment. There are still jobs at Amazon Go; the video shows a woman restocking shelves and a man making a sandwich. But there aren’t any cashiers!

The mean hourly wage for cashiers in 2015 was $10.99, compared with the $23.23 average for all occupations. It’s not a great job. But it is

still a job, one that doesn’t require a lot of experience or qualifications.

And the ability to check out without checking out would appear to mean far fewer of those jobs will be created in the future.

Appearances can be deceiving, though. Automated teller machines reduced the number of tellers needed at bank branches, but the ATMs also made it cheaper to operate branches, so banks kept opening more of them and hiring more tellers.

That’s no longer the case; banks have been closing branches, and the BLS expects the number of tellers to shrink by 8 percent from 2014 through 2024. But decades after the handing out of cash was automated, there are still lots of people employed handing out cash.

Part of the reason is that they’re not just handing out cash. Tellers and other frontline bank employees have increasingly been enlisted as salespeople pushing a variety of

financial products on customers.

Sometimes that’s gotten out of hand, as with Wells Fargo & Co. and its bogus-account scandal. But that shift from transactions (handing out cash) to interactions (selling) is part of a broader economic trend. The McKinsey Global Institute has been tracking it for years, finding that jobs which involve interacting with other people have been on the rise even as those that are mainly about transacting or producing things decline.

Now, it’s hard to imagine Amazon Go stores loading up on salespeople. It would be really off-putting to have somebody standing around asking, “Hey, do you want a drink with that salad?” But the rearrangement of grocery retailing that Amazon’s experiment portends is not going to be as simple as just cashiers losing their jobs.

Despite injury, DeKalb’s Freeman returns for third-straight award

The star DeKalb boys golfer had been dealing with a searing pain in his left wrist that eventually kept him off the course for more than a month.

With rest and staying away from the game being one of the hardest parts of the recovery, Freeman bounced back in time to be named the Daily Chronicle Boys Golfer of the Year for the third consecutive season.

“That was tough for me to sit and not play, because I’m usually on the golf course every day,” said Freeman, who managed an average score of 38 in his limited action this season and finished tied for 11th at the Class 3A Boys Golf State Championship.

“Eventually, with rest and rest and rest, it got to the point where it hurt a little bit but I could play, to it just stopped hurting.”

A year after placing 13th at the Class 3A Boys Golf State Championships in 2015, he tried to play through the aching wrist, but after the outing at the Kishwaukee Invite – he still finished fourth – Freeman and DeKalb coach John Cordes knew that if the star senior wanted to be healthy enough for one more run in the postseason, he needed to take a break.

“We just waited and waited and waited,” Cordes said of Freeman, who didn’t participate in a match for about six weeks. “Then he came back and he was overswinging a little bit and reaggravated it and we said, ‘If you’re doing to do this, you’ll need to cut back on your swing.’ He did and the ball went just as far because he was smooth and in rhythm.”

According to Freeman, the doctor said the pain came from overuse – too much golf in the summer. Freeman worried about not only missing his final season with the Barbs, but even more grave, long-term damage to his wrist as he prepares to play for Northern Illinois next season.

“Midway through the season, I was thinking that this has dragged on for so long,” Freeman said. “Getting closer to regionals, it wasn’t getting better. I tried hitting balls once and it felt a little better but then the next day, I woke up and it was sore again.

“I had to wind it back and not go after the ball as hard, swing easier,

Despite limited practice heading into a do-or-die tournament at the Class 3A Rockford Guilford Regional, Freeman shot a 74 – one stroke behind the medalist – and helped lead the Barbs to a regional championship.

“Was there pressure?” Cordes said about Freeman having little time to prepare for the postseason. “Sure there was pressure, but he’s put himself in those situations where he’s played against the best, he’s competed against the best, he’s beat the best. I just think he’s got so much experience that it didn’t faze him too much.”

Freeman said there were around five shots during the regional that hurt his wrist, but he endured. At the Class 3A Harlem Sectional, he managed to advance with a score of 76 to set up his second consecutive trip to the state tournament.

After 17 holes on the windy second day at state, Freeman had four bogeys and 13 pars in the round.

Lining up for the final hole of his injury-plagued senior season – the last hole of his career at DeKalb – he nailed his drive on the par 5 10th hole and used a 3-wood on his second shot to set himself up 40 yards from the pin.

Using a wedge on his third shot, he lofted it five feet from the cup and putted it in to finish with a two-day score of 151. Cordes praised Freeman’s ability in the short game, His illustrious playing career at DeKalb ended with a birdie – his only of the day.

“I just looked and smiled – finally,” Freeman said. “It was also just a good way to end.”

DeKALB – The Yorkville girls basketball team turned in a dominant defensive effort, forcing 20 steals and blocking nine shots in a winning effort over the DeKalb Barbs, 45-27.

The Barbs (2-6 overall, 0-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) kept it close early, trailing 8-3 at the end of the first quarter. They had many chances to bite into the Foxes’ early lead, earning multiple trips to the freethrow line. They couldn’t convert, going 0 for 8 from the line in the first quarter. Barbs coach Elliot Whitefield lamented the missed opportunities at the stripe.

“We started the game 1 for 12 from the free-throw line,” Whitefield said.

“On an average night, maybe we go 6 or 7 for 12, get a few points in transition and a few turnovers here or there and we’re competing.”

There were a few bright spots for the young Barbs, though. Aside from noting the effort that his players put forth, Whitefield said he was pleased with the play of junior small forward Raquel Mills. “[Mills] was aggressive. When you play against a team that is as aggressive as they are, the best thing that you can do is to attack them off of the dribble. When there’s room, she’s really tough to stop from going to the basket. One thing I know about these girls is that they won’t give up. I wouldn’t change a thing about them.

“Our key philosophy is that we want to play good, solid defense,” Yorkville coach Kim Wensits said.

“We move our feet and we don’t reach. Our bigger girls get into good position and their arm spans are 6 or 7 feet. Most of our defense around the basket is pure athleticism. I’ve been very lucky in that there hasn’t had to a be a whole lot of teaching with them. They just know what to do.”

Harrison was a huge factor for Yorkville on both sides of the floor.

She scored 14 points and blocked six shots, also adding five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Harrison says that it is the Foxes’ practice regimen that allows her to excel.

Spartans hold on to top Rock Falls

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The fourth quarter wasn’t pretty for the Sycamore girls basketball team.

However, the Spartans built their fortunes in the first three quarters as their double-digit lead dwindled but they held on for a 50-46 victory over previously undefeated Rock Falls on Tuesday night in Sycamore.

“The wheels fell off,” Sycamore coach Adam Wickness said after the game. “Dealing with pressure is something that we’ve been working on and it was something that we struggled with tonight.

Sycamore (6-1 overall) took a 3217 lead going into the fourth quarter after freshman Kylie Feuerbach connected on a short jumper with three seconds left remaining in the third.

Rock Falls (6-1) forced 12 of Sycamore’s 29 turnovers in the fourth quarter and used a full-court press – which Rockets coach Eric Wolf said allowed them to stay in the game despite a tough shooting night.

nior guard Taylor Hoefler had nine points off the bench and junior Abbee Sigel made a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the game to cut it to 49-46, but Feuerbach split a pair of free throws to seal the win.

The Spartans led nearly wire-towire on the night, jumping out to a 7-0 lead and holding the Rockets scoreless for nearly six minutes to start the game. The only lead for the Rockets on the night came after a layup by Nadia Poff made it 11-10 with 3:52 left in the second quarter – capping a 6-0 run.

However, Sycamore answered with seven straight points to close out the first half with a 17-11 lead – includ-

ing a 3-pointer by Majerus.

The Spartans cushioned their lead in the third period, outscoring the Rockets 15-6 and only committing three turnovers in the period.

“In the third quarter, we were able to slow it down and keep the turnovers down because we were making the right pass,” said Feuerbach, who played all 32 minutes.

Sycamore still held a double-digit lead late in the fourth quarter – a layup by Wright made it 44-34 – and the Spartans were 9 for 9 from the free-throw line at one point. However, they went 4 for 10 the rest of the way as the Rockets chipped back into the game.

“We want to view every game as a learning experience and this will give us a lot of opportunities to go back and look at the film and learn from it,” Wickness said. “We’re young in some key spots – I’m not making excuses or anything – but it’s going to be a work in progress as we go through the season.”

After escaping the night with a win, the Spartans will host Kaneland at 7 p.m. Friday.

BOYS SWIMMING

New look DeKalb-Sycamore co-op is looking to still be competitive

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Gone are state champion Daniel Hein, state medalist Jacob Bjork and 12 other swimmers.

But with a couple of state-experienced swimmers back in the mix and a strong freshman class, DeKalb-Sycamore boys swim coach Melanie Chambers said she doesn’t expect the Barbs to be starting from square one.

“They’ve got a good, solid foundation that they’re building off of,” Chambers said. “Our returning swimmers are doing well. I don’t think we’ll necessarily compare up to last

year given we’ve lost 14 strong swimmers, but it will be a good rebuilding year. I don’t think we’ll be set back so to speak.”

While both of the Barbs individual state qualifiers from a year ago have graduated – including 100-backstroke state champ Daniel Hein going to compete at the University of Missouri and Bjork headed to Washington University in St. Louis – two Barbs with state experience are back. Both senior Dylan Rasmussen and junior Riley Lohse competed on the Barbs’ relay teams, which finished in the top 12 in state. The 200-yard medley relay was sixth and 400 freestyle relay took

12th.

Lohse said he’s gunning for an individual spot in the state tournament in either the 50 free or 100 backstroke.

“He’s doing everything he can to make sure he starts his season off right and is on the right track,” Chambers said. “He really wants to get to where he wants to go.”

Lohse said the team has been training hard the first couple of weeks of the season, which is set to begin Wednesday with a home meet against Ottawa/LaSalle-Peru.

“First couple weeks were pretty tiring cause it was the start of the season, and a lot of the people only swim

in the high school season,” Lohse said. “So we were getting back into shape, basically destroying us, from Mel’s perspective, to work us back up to the end of the season.”

Among the freshmen, Chambers said about five or six compete yearround. Two of them are twins Paul and David Ruetten, whom she expects to have an immediate impact on the team.

“I don’t know if they’re state strong, but they’ll definitely be great assets to our team,” Chambers said.

“They’ll be high-scoring in all of our meets. They’re strong swimmers and work really hard.”

The initial reaction is to say that Hahn just bought himself at least three more years of job security, but anyone who has watched the way Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf does business knows that job security comes with walking through the door for your first day of work.

We still don’t have a firm grasp on who is running the show – Hahn or vice president Ken Williams – but whoever it is had better have a sharp eye for talent during the rebuilding process. It helps that Boston, one of the best organizations in baseball, already has done some of the work for the Sox. Just because Moncada won Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year award last season doesn’t mean he’s a sure thing. But it turned out to be the case with the Cubs and Kris Bryant, the 2014 award winner.

Sox fans probably are sick of hearing about the Cubs, but their team is being judged by their crosstown rivals’ World Series success. And now that the Sox are going through what appears to be a Cubs-like rebuild, the judging will be even more intense. Hahn talked Tuesday about building for sustained success. Sound familiar?

The Cubs have looked to the Red Sox for almost everything they’ve done the past five years, from hiring president Theo Epstein to renovating an

old ballpark. So maybe the White Sox simply were following form by dealing with Boston. And perhaps the Red Sox’s acquisition of Sale is a response to the Cubs’ success under Epstein, their former employee. Oh, it’s a tangled web.

Sale is a package deal: He’s great, and he’s a few degrees off center. A jerky delivery from a stick-figure physique and a 95 mph fastball makes him very difficult to hit. But he also made headlines last season by cutting up teammates’ throwback jerseys before a game because he found them uncomfortable. And an irate Sale chose to plant his flag in the ground over the Sox’s decision to cut back on the bizarre presence of Adam LaRoche’s 14-year-old son in the clubhouse. The Red Sox best handle him with care.

Sale gets a chance to win now, and the White Sox, their fingers crossed, hope to win in a few years. It’s no fun watching a team tank to get a higher draft position, but this is how business is done now. For White Sox fans, it’s their penance for the sin of watching mediocre baseball for so long. In turn, the Sox have to understand that all the empty seats of past seasons now will have company.

The Sale trade is just the beginning.

There’s more work to do. Let’s hope Hahn and Williams don’t look at a hammer and say, “What’s this thing?”

The wrecking ball took a mighty swing Tuesday.

The White Sox firmly announced their intention of a teardown and a rebuild by trading ace Chris Sale to the Red Sox for second baseman Yoan Moncada, one of the top prospects in baseball, VIEWS and 20-yearold pitcher Rick Michael Morrissey Kopech, whose fastball has been clocked at 105 mph. Two other Boston prospects are included in the deal.

Good for the Sox. Now let’s see if they know anything about new construction.

And good for Sale, who goes to a franchise that has figured out how to win regularly and not, say, once every 88 years. Now let’s see whether the Red Sox’s uniforms are up to his keen fashion sense.

The Sale trade should be the first of many swings for the Sox, who need to remove all rubble and build from the ground up. They went the veteran route after winning a World Series in 2005, and they went nowhere. If Sale, who finished in the top six in American League Cy Young Award voting each of the past five seasons, can be traded, anybody can be traded. And should be traded. Jose Quintana, Todd Frazier, Jose Abreu, Adam Eaton – anybody and everybody.

The Sox are open for business.

Heisman winner Salaam found dead in Colorado park

Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam was found dead Monday night in a Boulder park less than two miles from Folsom Field, where he carved his name into the University of Colorado record books as one of the greatest players in the program’s history.

The Boulder County coroner’s office was still investigating the cause of the death of the 42-year-old Salaam, who won the Heisman in 1994. The body of the onetime running back was found at Eben G. Fine Park in Boulder. Police say foul play was not suspected.

Salaam’s mother, Khalada, told USA TODAY Sports on Tuesday that police said they suspect he killed himself.

“They said they found a note and would share that with us when we get there,” Salaam’s mother said.

Salaam’s death stunned the Colorado football community, which this year celebrated a revival with a 10-3 record, an appearance in the Pac-12 championship game and the Buffaloes’ first bowl bid in almost a decade.

“You talk about a young man who was smart, handsome, talented. He was very, very gifted. He was humble. He

McCartney remembered Salaam as a natural leader.

“His personality was infectious. He just had a warmth about him, a genuineness about him that was really contagious,” McCartney said. “On the surface, he had everything. We thought he was a

cut above, and he turned out to be.”

Former teammate Matt Russell, now the Denver Broncos director of player personnel, said Salaam was a “fiercely loyal friend,” the “ultimate teammate” and the very “definition of a winner.”

“He practiced hard, he played hard and he made our teams better,” Russell said. “... My heart goes out to Rashaan’s mother and his family. They have a lot to be proud of with the person that Rashaan was, the way he treated people and the friend he was to everyone he came across. He will be missed by so many.”

Salaam rushed for 2,055 yards and 24 touchdowns as a junior in 1994, leading the Buffaloes to an 11-1 record, a win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl and a No. 3 finish in the final polls. He won the Heisman in a runaway.

“I went to New York with him,” McCartney recalled. “I was thrilled for him.

I’m pretty sure he’s the only Buff that ever got that award. When we recruited him, we knew he was special ... he just kept getting better.”

His work ethic was renowned. Former teammate Blake Anderson can’t forget how Salaam used to lift weights with the offensive linemen, because “that’s how strong he was, and how dedicated he was.”

“We were blessed with an incredible

team and love for one another,” said Anderson, who was a receiver on the ’94 team that also included fellow receiver Michael Westbrook and quarterback Kordell Stewart. “It was just an awesome, awesome experience to have the magnitude of the players that we had on that team, not only for their abilities to play football, but their abilities to love and be great friends, which we all are currently today.

“We are all hurting tremendously today.”

The Chicago Bears made him a firstround draft pick in 1995, and he rushed for 1,074 yards and 10 touchdowns in winning NFC Rookie of the Year honors.

Injuries cut short his career. He only scored three rushing TDs in the next two years in Chicago and played his last NFL game with the Cleveland Browns in 1999.

Salaam played for the Memphis Maniax of the defunct XFL and attempted one last comeback with the NFL before retiring.

He fell on hard times after that. In 2011 he auctioned his Heisman ring.

“I don’t understand that,” McCartney said. “You talk about a kid that on the surface had everything. He was a real handsome guy, he was intelligent, he was personable. You couldn’t really point at him and see any deficiencies.”

She will oversee ESL, high school equivalency classes DAILY CHRONICLE

Jaime Schrader has been named director of Adult Education and Perkins Support at Kishwaukee College. She will oversee the high school equivalency preparation and English as a second language classes for the college. She assumed her position on Nov. 7.

Schrader is a familiar face at the college, having served as the career planner for the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act program for the past two-and-a-half years. The WIOA program offers out-ofschool youth ages 16 to 24 opportunities to enroll in shortterm training in certificate or degree programs. She holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale and an master’s degree in human resources development from

Webster University.

With more than 10 years of experience working with young people, assisting them in finding career paths and transitioning to college-level training and education programs, Schrader brings a unique perspective to adult education.

“I think that the ultimate goal is to help people move forward,” she said in a news release. “The future of adult ed is to seamlessly work with the type of workforce training that WIOA programs already incorporate. If we can help a lowwage worker earn their high school equivalency credential or gain English fluency and then move into a certificate or degree program, we will make a long-lasting impact in people’s lives.”

Moving into the spring semester, Schrader will be maintaining the adult education current schedule for high school equivalency preparation and ESL classes offered on campus and in the local communities.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:15 a.m.; in Sycamore at Sycamore High School on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m.; in Rochelle at United Methodist Church on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m.; and at Kishwaukee College on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:15 a.m.

Beginning English as a second language classes will be offered in DeKalb at the DeKalb Public Library on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m.; in Rochelle at Central School on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. and intermediate and advanced ESL classes will be at Kishwaukee College on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:15 a.m. and at 6 to 8:15 p.m.

The power of cookies

In case you haven’t heard me shout it from the rooftops, I have a new book: “Dorie’s Cookies”! It’s the book I always knew I would write, because I’ve been a cookie lover almost since the day I was born. I grew up in a family of cookie lovers, and I created a family of cookie lovers. I recently found pictures from our son’s first birthday party, and there’s the cake with the candle, of course, but there’s also the picture of me holding him and smiling as he eats a home-baked cookie. We start ’em young in our family.

Because I worked on the book for about three years, I thought about cookies a lot, as in day and night. I thought about taste and texture and ingredients. I dreamed about cookies, which is how one of my favorites, the Classic Jammer, was born. And I considered the power of cookies.

My son, Joshua, whose official bio lists him as Cookie Monster, says cookies are memories. I believe that, and I believe all cookie memories are happy memories. My cookie mantra (yep, I’ve got one) is: Give a cookie. Get joy.

It’s too short to include the fact that making cookies is its own kind of joy, but if you’re a baker, you already know the pleasures of the craft.

So, I was working away on my book and baking cookies and giving them away as quickly as I was baking them – because that’s what you do with cookies; you bake a batch, you keep some, you share the rest – and I thought: Cookies are made to be shared. We never bake just one cookie, and we never bake cookies only for ourselves. (Even I, an everyday baker, don’t do that.) We always bake cookies in batches, we share what we bake and we make people happy.

Then I had my lightbulb moment: We bakers could make the whole world happy if we just continued doing what we do. And it was with this in mind that I launched the #cookiesandkindness project.

I also love that it comes with all the traditional patterns such as the Christmas tree, wreath and several flowers, but also has an elegant fleur de lis and a heart.

You also can buy extra seasonal discs and make spritz year round.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Mix butter, unsweetened chocolate and sugar together until creamy. Add egg yolks one at a time to combine. Add vanilla and mix thoroughly.

Using your hands or a blending fork, work in the flour, a little at a time, until smooth.

Divide dough into 2-3 pieces and roll them

into a tube shape and cover with wax paper.

Chill dough for 30 minutes. When the dough is chilled, place the roll in the cookie press tube and choose a cookie plate for your design.

Press the cookies out one at a time onto an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake 7 to 10 minutes or until set but not brown. Remove from cookie sheet after 1 minute, and gently place on a cooling rack.

Let cookies cool completely.

Melt chocolate and place in a decorating bag or a re-closeable plastic bag. When ready to decorate cookies, snip a small corner at one end of the bag for the chocolate to flow through. When the cookies are cool, carefully drizzle melted semi-sweet chocolate on the top of the cookie. While the chocolate is still warm, sprinkle with crushed peppermint candies so the candy will stick to the chocolate, then drizzle with melted white chocolate.

Place in the refrigerator to set the chocolate for at least 1 hour before serving.

Store in an airtight container in a cool place.

After a heavy meal, snickerdoodles are the perfect bite

By The CULINARY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA The holiday season is such a beloved time of year. The weather turns cool and the snow begins to fall; we spend dedicated time with our family and friends; and children experience old family traditions for the first time.

At homes across the country, carefully wrapped plates of homemade cookies are passed among friends and neighbors to celebrate a year of friendship and community. A family’s cookie plate is as unique as they are, and so often you can identify the sender by the treats on the plate.

Special holiday cookie recipes are an old tradition. In the Middle Ages, spices, butter and sugar were prized possessions, too expensive for everyday use. At the holidays, cooks would use these ingredients to make small extravagances to share with friends and family. Cookies spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and clove were common and have stood the test of time. It is believed the first gingerbread men came from the time of Elizabeth I, who asked for the cookies to be shaped like the men in her court.

Cookie recipes have evolved a great deal since the time of Elizabeth, and every family has their list of must-bake cookies. One standout

holiday favorite is the snickerdoodle, a sugar cookie that is rolled in cinnamon sugar before being baked. It is recognizable by its slightly cracked exterior that lets its chewy interior shine through. Unlike many sugar cookies that are unleavened and rolled for cutting, our snickerdoodles contain both baking soda and cream of tartar. Because they are so mild in flavor, they often have a characteristic tanginess that can be attributed to those ingredients. After a heavy meal, Snickerdoodles are the perfect bite to satisfy a sweet tooth.

This recipe calls for a #40 scoop, which is just about 1½ tablespoons of cookie dough per cookie, but you can make your cookies as big or small as you would like. For smaller cookies, increase the temperature slightly and reduce the baking time. For larger cookies, decrease the temperature and increase the baking time slightly.

Either way, your nose will know when these cookies are done, and your home will be filled with the scent of the holidays.

I always have loved peppermint and chocolate together and peppermint bark is my favorite way to eat it.

Or it was – until I created this peppermint bark variation of my favorite childhood Christmas cookie.

My mother made Spritz cookies every Christmas for as long as I can remember. She always made the simple butter cookies in both chocolate and vanilla, and we decorated them with colored sugar sprinkles. My favorite shape was the poinsettia, because you could eat the cookie one petal at a time.

The hardest thing about making this recipe is using the cookie press.

There is no way around it – you need a cookie press. My mother used her mother’s cookie press until it stopped working and since then, we both have bought many cookie presses trying to find one that was smooth and easy to work.

A cookie press looks like the culinary version of a caulking gun and deposits only enough dough to make one cookie. I tried quite a few presses,

28 Moderate alcohol use benefits women Dear Readers: Welcome to our new “Ask the Doctors” column. As an internist and primary care physician at UCLA Health, my approach to medicine is to understand I don’t have all the answers – I have to learn new topics and review old topics all the time.

Sometimes, I can provide answers right away. But sometimes, I have to stop and reassess. Medicine has seen many breakthroughs since I graduated from medical school nearly 20 years ago, and evidence has changed many dogmatic ways of practice.

Objective, non-biased data are important to the practice of medicine. Doctors must understand how that data can be applied to one person or to large groups of people.

You’ve already met my colleagues Dr. Eve Glazier and Dr. Elizabeth Ko and learned about their approach to health and wellness. My column focuses on common sense answers based on scientific literature. As I increase my professional knowledge, I hope to provide people with thoughtful and deliberate interpretations of medical science people can use to direct their own health.

Dear Doctor: I enjoy a nice glass of wine at the end of the day, but I’ve heard various reports about its health risks. So, tell me: In women, does alcohol increase or decrease the chances of premature death?

Dear Reader: It depends on the amount.

The most definitive study on this topic was done in 1995. It looked at more than

That research found having one drink (2 units of alcohol) every three to four days was linked to a significant decrease – 17 percent – in death during the course of the study. One drink a day was linked to an 11 percent decrease in death rates. However, more than one drink a day increased death rates, compared to no alcohol at all.

For women, the greatest benefits of alcohol were in the link to reductions of stroke and heart attacks. Yet, as women increase their alcohol intake, the risk of cancer increases. In this study, there was a significant correlation between having two or more drinks a day and breast cancer.

In short, alcohol does have benefits when it comes to lifespan, but those benefits vanish when a woman has two or more drinks a day.

I Buy Old Envelopes & Stamps Richard Thompson, one of the greatest-ever guitarists, wrote a song called “The Hots for the Smarts” that, sadly, has never been released on an album. But Augie Boehm’s latest book, “Bridge Smarts” (HNB Publishing), made me think of it.

Boehm, who often takes part in duplicates with inexperienced clients, offers insights into key aspects of playing better -- hand evaluation and defense being at the top of the list.

The opening lead on this deal would be easy for an expert, but missed by many less-experienced players. Look at the West hand and the auction. What should he lead against four hearts?

West’s negative double showed exactly four spades and six-plus points. His three-diamond rebid was game-invitational. But the strange action was South’s jump to four hearts.

One moment, he passed over two hearts; the next, he jumped to game after no further encouragement from partner. What is the explanation?

Assuming South is a competent player, he must have length and weakness in diamonds. After West bid three diamonds, South knew that his partner had a singleton or a void and he could ruff his diamond losers on the board.

To cut down those ruffs, West must lead his trump. (Note that dummy rates to have only three hearts.

With four and a diamond shortage, he would have bid three hearts over three diamonds.)

Then East must play his part, leading another round of hearts when in with a high diamond. South will lose one spade, one heart and two diamonds.
