Sick man needs a place to hide POLL

Sometimes I miss the last house I owned.

It was in Cary, a town comparable to Sycamore, where I live now. We remodeled a few of the rooms there, including the master bathroom. We’d also replaced the windows after the salesman from Sears held a lighter under one of the panes of glass and you couldn’t feel the heat on the other side.

Last week, what I missed about that old house is the shed we built in the backyard. It was a great place to stash the wheelbarrow and other tools, and when I’m sick, as I was last week, I might consider hiding there.

When I was a kid, my mother would take care of me when I was sick. She’d bring me tea or chicken soup or whatever it was that I needed, and take my temperature – with an oral thermometer – all with genuine concern.

When I get sick now, my wife, Kate, looks at me as if she’d like to evict me. As I drag my aching bones into the kitchen to mix up more Vitamin C powder in a glass of ice water – moping past the 3-year-old who’s having a fit and the 8-year-old and 11-year-old who are fighting over some convenient triviality – I can feel her glowering at me.

I know it’s because I’m home and not doing anything to help. But hey, when I’m sick, I’m in pain. I need fluids and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” reruns.

Usually, if I hurt myself out working in the yard or on some kind of home-improvement project, I’ll suck it up without too much com-

BRIAN BEMIS FAMILY TO NAME SYCAMORE DOG PARK

SYCAMORE – A Sycamore family that donated $100,000 to the Leaf a Legacy campaign will name the future dog park in Sycamore Park District’s Action 2020 project.

The park will be named the Brian Bemis Family Dog Park after the family that owns the Brian Bemis Automotive Group in Sycamore.

Brian and Renee Bemis also will donate a bronze German shepherd statue sculpted by Renee Bemis that will stand at the entrance.

plaint. But it seems perfectly rational to curl up in a ball and not move when I’ve caught some kind of creeping crud.

Apparently, however, I am insufferable in my suffering. Generally speaking, Kate will help me out when I don’t feel well, although sometimes under obvious protest. She says that she’d take care of me if I ever was “really sick.” But in her estimation, when I get a cold, I just turn into a big, dramatic baby – and as she has reminded me, I am NOT her child.

I guess this is a problem worldwide. I searched the web and found the headline “Men Reverting To Babies When Sick Has Become A Global Crisis” from the Huffington Post.

Luckily I don’t take sick days very often (knock on wood). Last week was my first one of the year, and for the sake of domestic peace at Casa de Olson, I’m hoping it will be the last for a long time.

Waterman invites you to ride the Holiday Lights Train

news@daily-chronicle.com A visit to Waterman is one of the most anticipated events of the year for Kylie Kofoid of Compton.

Kylie, 9, and her family are a few of the thousands of people who hop on board the Holiday Lights Train, a free train ride that takes visitors on a half-mile loop around Waterman’s festively decorated Lions Park.

“This is our family tradition, and we come every year,” said Kylie, who was waiting in line to board the train with her grandparents, aunt and cousin. “I always get excited every year. I like riding the train and seeing Santa’s workshop in the tunnel.”

Pete and Charleen Robinson of Waterman have been offering free miniature train rides around Lions Park for 23 years. Decorations with more than 300,000 lights on hundreds of unique wire-frame figurines that Pete made by hand line the quarter-scale train’s half-mile run. Guests are treated to free hot cocoa and popcorn after the ride, and can even visit with Santa Claus.

Pete Robinson said more than 20,000 people from all over northern Illinois and beyond visit Waterman each holiday season. Despite hundreds of hours of preparation each year, Pete said he loves bringing joy to the community and making children happy.

“There’s nothing better than seeing little kids jumping up and down waiting for their train ride, so it’s worth every second because of the smiles we put on people’s faces,” he said. “This is our Christmas gift to the world.”

Pete’s wife, Charleen, runs the kitchen and stays busy preparing hot cocoa and fresh popcorn. She said she’s happy that she and her husband are able to offer everything free of charge.

“There are so many families who can’t afford a Christmas, and we try to give them happiness,” she said.

“I really enjoy doing this. We work all year long, and always add new things every year.”

a ride on the train. He said a friend recommended it to him and his wife, and they said it was worth the long drive.

“It was a good train ride, and the boys got to see Santa. They loved it,” he said. “The overall Christmas atmosphere is great and perfect for getting into the holiday spirit.”

Katie and Mike Harris of Sycamore have come every year since their son Owen, 5, was born. They now have a 3-year-old son who also

loves the train.

“Our kids love trains and Santa, and it’s free,” Katie said. “There aren’t many places that have events like this for kids. I love to see how they react.”

Cassi Rhoton of Earlville used to come to Waterman to ride the train when she was growing up in Plano.

Now, she and her husband, Andy, bring their 2 year-old son.

“This is a tradition we’re carrying on,” she said. “We come every year,

and our son loves the train.”

Addison Bingham, 8, of Rochelle loved seeing all of the lights and going inside the tunnel, which was turned into Santa’s workshop. Her mother, Jamie, said riding the train is a family tradition for her as well.

“We bring the whole family because the kids love seeing the lights and they count down the days until we come,” Jamie said. “I like that they do it for free so everyone can visit.”

Bridgette Copeland of Malta brought her three young daughters who had so much fun that they rode the train twice.

“This is our second year coming,” Copeland said. “The kids loved it last year and really wanted to come again. The lights are great, and this is so exciting for little kids.”

Cademon Brewing Co. attempts comeback

browland@shawmedia.com GENOA – Cademon Brewing Co. is hoping to stage a comeback with an $18,000 crowdfunding campaign after it lost its liquor license last month because of unpaid taxes.

Cademon announced Nov. 17 that it had closed its tap room at 217 W. Main St. in Genoa because its liquor license was suspended. On the hook for $10,000 in sales taxes, the brewery’s owners then announced Dec. 1 that they planned to close permanently. But after hearing from loyal fans, owner Andrew Nordman decided Sunday to launch the crowdfunding effort on Indiegogo.

“The kind words on social media, in emails and in person have been profound and we want to thank every-

one that has reached out since our announcement on Thursday regarding our closing,” the company wrote in a Facebook post. “The common theme throughout the conversations with people has been a desire for us to run a crowdfunding campaign.”

The campaign had raised nearly $6,000 toward its $18,000 goal as of Monday afternoon. Because it has a fixed goal, the campaign will only be funded if it meets the $18,000 goal.

Nordman, who works a full-time job in addition to running the brewery, said he was heartened by the response.

“We’ve had a great rapport with our customers and community,” he said.

It came as a boost after Thursday, which Nordman described “demoralizing.”

The fundraising campaign offers donors a variety of perks for donors that include everything from beer and merchandise to a chance to name one of the brewery’s fermenters.

“In order for us to reopen, we need to raise $18,000,” Nordman wrote on the campaign’s website. “Those costs pay our outstanding tax payments and renew our liquor license until September 30th, 2017, and the costs of our perks. 100 percent of these funds goes towards getting us open again and the beer flowing once again.”

Cademon opened in December 2014 and has since generated a loyal following.

Nordman said the tax issue was the result of flaws in the company’s business plan. Nordman, a first-time business owner, said he missed a notice from the state regarding a change

in how the business was to pay sales tax, since it doesn’t charge it directly, according to the crowdfunding campaign’s website.

“Unfortunately, we had just spent a large chunk of our operating capital filling delicious cans of beer, as well as prepping for our second anniversary beer, annual Imperial Demonic releases, and our New Year’s Eve beer,” Nordman wrote. “This has left us sitting with lots of beer we can’t sell, no money to pay the outstanding bill, and bills starting to pile up while we’re unable to sell alcohol.”

Nordman said that if the company meets its goal and can reopen, he’s confident it would avoid such problems in the future.

Sycamore council OKs rezoning for luxury senior townhomes

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore City Council voted 6-1 Monday to approve the rezoning of about nine acres on the southeast corner of Mount Hunger Road and Route 23 for the development of senior living townhomes.

First Ward Alderman Alan Bauer opposed the rezoning.

With the 8.59-acre property approved for residential zoning, developer Brian Grainger can present a preliminary plat for his proposed Luxury Grainger Built Town Homes. The development would consist of 12 four-unit buildings for active adults, age 55 and older, similar to Grainger’s Somerset Farm Sycamore LLC. City Manager Brian Gregory said the rezoning is dependent upon Grainger successfully going

through with his plans, and the property would remain commercial otherwise.

At their previous meeting, aldermen raised concerns about the placement of the development, such as the need to extend the existing bike path and install new traffic signals.

Gregory said the bike path would be connected from the Old Mill Park trail westward to the Mount Hunger and Route 23 intersection. He also said details are being worked out with members of the Sycamore Park District as to what kind of crosswalk and signal for pedestrians would be installed and where to add a second emergency access point.

“Mr. Grainger has worked with the park board and Executive Director Dan Gibble, and they are working toward solidifying an agreement that would establish these things,” Gregory said. “At this point, the park district has not objected to this plan.”

change because of the rezoning.

Gregory said the only side that would not meet the setback requirements is the south end near the park, where a 10.33-foot setback is proposed rather than the 30 feet required; however, the park district has not indicated an issue with this proximity.

Grainger said his next step will be to go back to the Sycamore Plan Commission and work on his preliminary plat.

“We’ll delve a little bit more into the details, which we’ve worked through a lot,” Grainger said.

“We’ve been working on those kinds of things conceptually, so now we can talk about them more as far as details with the infrastructure and things like that.”

He said having a floor plan almost identical to Somerset Farms makes his new development easier to conceptualize, and he hopes the process continues to move along smoothly.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Police are searching for three to four suspects who stole several computers and pepper-sprayed an employee who tried to stop them Friday at the Best Buy at 2074 Sycamore Road.

In a news release Monday, police said two men and a woman who was wearing a blonde wig entered the store at 8:37 p.m. Friday and took several MacBook computers out of an unlocked storage cage at the store. As

they left the store, one of the suspects pepper-sprayed an employee who was blocking the exit.

DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said that the person who was sprayed did not need to go to the hospital.

All three suspects then drove off in a black Jeep Compass, which police said had a temporary registration and a partial plate number of “11.” The driver was described as wearing dreadlocks. Because of multiple accounts of the incident, Redel said it’s unclear whether there were actually three or

four suspects.

The crime was definitely planned because the suspects went into the store with the intent to steal and how they would do it, but it became a robbery after the use of pepper spray, which is considered an act of force, Redel said.

DeKalb police noted that these individuals might also be linked to similar crimes in other cities. Redel said that detectives are trying to coordinate with police departments in Illinois and Wisconsin to find connections to relat-

ed crimes, but it may take days before any links can be confirmed.

“We have good leads on the suspects, and we may have identified the female and one of the males,” Redel added.

Illinois officials bash idea to end cash-bond system

SPRINGFIELD – Several officials in central Illinois have said they don’t agree with the Cook County sheriff’s idea to abolish the state’s cash-bond system.

Under current state law, judges set bonds to ensure defendants show up for court and don’t pose a danger to the community, the State Journal-Register reported.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said Illinois’ current system isn’t fair to low-level defendants who can’t afford to pay, and that it’s dangerous when defendants with violent backgrounds are freed until trial.

Judge sides with city in Chicago food truck lawsuit

CHICAGO – A Cook County circuit court judge has ruled against a Chicago food truck operator in a case involving city rules requiring mobile eateries to do business at least 200 feet from restaurants.

Judge Anna Helen Demacopoulos upheld the 200-foot rule Monday along with another rule requiring food trucks to use a city GPS tracking device.

Lawyers for Laura Pekarik, who has operated “Cupcakes for Courage” food truck for five years, had argued food truck owners have been hamstrung by the rules.

They said Monday that they plan to appeal the decision.

Their lawsuit argued that Chicago can’t protect restaurants from competition and that the tracking devices are an illegal search under the Illinois Constitution.

The judge said Monday that the law allows the city to strike a balance between competitive businesses.

Pro boxer Ed Brown dies after shooting in Chicago

CHICAGO – Managers said a professional boxer from Chicago died after he was shot in the head while returning from a midnight workout.

Ed “Bad Boy” Brown was shot early Saturday as he sat in a car in Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood. Manager Michael Cericola told WGN-TV that the 25-year-old Brown died in a hospital Sunday afternoon.

Police said a silver vehicle pulled up alongside Brown’s parked car and someone inside fired shots hitting Brown and a 19-year-old woman. Brown was shot multiple times, including in the head. The woman was hit in the leg.

Brown’s mother was one of 21 people crushed to death in a stairwell in a 2003 Chicago nightclub disaster. ESPN.com said Brown was a fast-rising welterweight who turned pro in 2012.

Colleagues describe artist colony founder as callous

SAN FRANCISCO – The founder of a ramshackle Oakland artists’ colony where dozens of people burned to death saw himself as a kind of guru and loved to surround himself with followers but showed chilling disregard for their well-being, according to relatives, neighbors and acquaintances.

Derick Ion Almena, 46, leased and operated the cluttered warehouse where fire erupted Friday night during a dance party, leaving at least 36 people dead in the nation’s most lethal building fire in more than a decade. In his first interview since the fire, Almena told San Jose TV station KNTV that he felt himself to be like a grandfather to all the young artists who had lived in the warehouse with his family.

Neighbors and occupants of the building said he had illegally carved it into rented living and studio space for artists, calling it the Satya Yuga collective. On Monday, prosecutors watched over the scene to preserve evidence as bodies were pulled from the blackened ruins. Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley said that if prosecutors believe criminal charges are warranted, charges could range from involuntary manslaughter to murder.

Acquaintances painted a devastating portrait of Almena and his longtime partner, Micah Allison.

“Honestly, I don’t think he is capable of feeling any kind of remorse or guilt,” said Allison’s father, Michael Allison of Portland, Oregon.

“I’ve never seen him ever really care about anyone else.”

He described the couple as users of meth-

amphetamine, heroin and crack and said their three young children were taken away from them by social service authorities for several months beginning last year. The youngsters were found hungry, infested with lice and illclothed, he said.

Michael Allison recalled Almena and Micah overcome with laughter once when they told of a fire-breather accidentally setting himself on fire at one of their many parties at the building, which was widely known as the Ghost Ship.

Almena “surrounds himself with people who are going to treat him like he’s some sort of guru,” said Danielle Boudreaux, who said she was a friend of the couple for eight years. “He enjoyed having minions around to do his tasks for him and help build this great – he thinks he’s building this artistic empire.”

On Monday, Almena said the couple was sorry for all those who lost loved ones in the fire.

“I gladly would give my entire life of fortune, of wealth of experience again and again and again, and I say this to you and I say this to the camera and to whoever is watching me that I surrender everything,” Almena said, with Micah Allison by his side.

In a Facebook post hours after the fire, he made no mention of the deaths, drawing criticism online and from people who knew him for perceived callousness. “Everything I worked so hard for is gone,” he wrote then, while noting that his partner and their children had been safe at a hotel during the blaze.

Survivors recounted having to struggle to escape the burning warehouse, where many of the victims were on a makeshift second floor served by a rickety staircase of wooden pallets.

Through the program, Heartland Bank donated $25 for each touchdown participating schools made at a varsity home football game during the regular and playoff seasons.

DeKALB – With a new chef and interior renovations completed, Omar Musfi is looking to give his authentic Middle Eastern restaurant a fresh start.

Musfi opened Mediterraneo Grill, 122 E. Lincoln Highway, about six years ago while earning his master’s degree at Northern Illinois University. Originally from Syria, Musfi said he realized he could not quite find the authentic Middle Eastern cuisine he was looking for.

“When we opened, we were trying to be close as much as we could to ethnic traditional food, like the way how we eat it back home,” he said.

He said his new chef has 30 years of experience and brings new flavor to the menu while maintaining the Middle Eastern tradition.

“This chef, actually he twists a lot of recipes, and he makes the original food exactly like how you eat it in the Middle East,” Musfi said.

Deterioration of the former Otto’s building next door has caused issues such as water leakage, dust and odor to affect the restaurant.

Musfi said he wants customers to know those problems have been fixed, with interior work completed to seal off the buildings’ shared wall.

Other changes include lowering prices and making the restaurant BYOB so customers can bring their own beer or wine to enjoy with dinner.

“Everything we do here, we do it from scratch,” he said. “The only can we use is the tomato paste. The falafel, we soak the beans, we spice it; the process takes 36 hours.”

He said although his restaurant lost business in the past year, he wanted to put his efforts into making improvements and encouraging customers to return with the new changes.

“To me, this place has a message; it’s not just only food,” he said. “My relations now in town with people, I feel like I’m home.”

Musfi also is a music professor at NIU where he directs the Middle Eastern Music Ensemble.

He said his time at NIU and as a restaurant owner in DeKalb has allowed him to form relationships that make him feel like he is back in his hometown of Damascus.

“Especially in the past five, six years with what’s going on in Syria, everybody looked at Syrians or Arabs or Middle Eastern people like we’re terrorists,” he said. “To me, food and music are the two things that I can convince you if I’m a good person or not.”

Americans have the right to burn flag

Flag burning is disrespectful to all who have served America proudly and shows an utter lack of perspective that takes for granted how blessed U.S. citizens are in comparison with the rest of the world.

Flag burning is due absolute legal protection and is a right to which every American is entitled.

While those two statements might seem contradictory, they are both 100 percent true. Many Americans find the act of burning a flag, and the disrespect it symbolizes, reprehensible. Yet, for those who value the freedom America bestows upon its citizens, we must recognize that as abhorrent as desecrating a flag is, as long as it is done safely and does not put anyone at risk of injury, it is a protected form of expression.

The national conversation on flag burning heated up Tuesday after President-elect Donald Trump tweeted that anyone who burns an American flag should face “consequences,” such as jail or a loss of citizenship. The comment may have been prompted

by Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, which prohibited the flying of any flags after someone burned one in protest of Trump’s election.

We have previously expressed concerns that Trump, based on comments made during the campaign, would seek to curtail the First Amendment as much as possible.

The Supreme Court ruled in 1989 – a decision supported by Justice Antonin Scalia, who has been held up as the ideal conservative justice by many, including Trump himself – that flag-burning is a form of speech protected by the First Amendment.

It should also be noted, the Constitution forbids the government from removing the citizenship of a natural-born American.

Freedom of speech is only truly free if its protection extends to speech most would object to. ... Those who choose to protest in a way most Americans find unpalatable will face consequences, be it socially or economically. Yet legally, they are, and should remain, free of punishment.

We understand many people agree with Trump on this issue, and that the desire not to see a flag burned comes from a deep love of country and all those who served. But if we truly embrace all the flag stands for, we must recognize the right to disrespect that flag – and the country itself – is also part of what makes America a bastion of freedom across the globe.

We must use our own freedom of speech and words, rather than the law, to push back against the kind of speech we find objectionable, and convince misguided protesters that burning a flag is an ill-charted – and hurtful – course of action to the nation.

Free review of state vote isn’t so bad Critics said the unprecedented statewide recount of Wisconsin’s vote for president is a waste of time and money.

They’re half right.

The elaborate task of tallying – to a large extent by hand – nearly 3 million ballots will certainly tie up county clerks across the state, distracting them from other duties. And it’s hard to justify the two-week exercise, given no credible evidence of tampering or irregularities at the polls Nov. 8.

But the cost isn’t a big deal, at least for taxpayers, because they’re not footing the bill. Green Party candidate Jill Stein’s campaign is funding the effort, as prescribed by state law.

That means Wisconsin is essentially getting a free review of its voting system, which isn’t so bad.

And we fully expect it will show the election results were correct, which will help build public trust.

There’s some value in that, after a long campaign in which Republican Donald Trump, who won Wisconsin and the White House, repeatedly trashed the process as

rigged and corrupt. Even in victory, the president-elect – offering no evidence – has wildly claimed that millions of people voted illegally across the country. Usually when you win, you don’t whine about the vote being unfair. But Trump is the most unusual and chaotic presidential winner in modern American history.

County clerks across Wisconsin started recounting ballots Thursday and have until Dec. 13 to complete the elaborate task. About half of Wisconsin’s 72 counties plan to count their votes by hand.

Others will run their ballots through machines or employ some combination of hand and machine counts.

Trump won Wisconsin by 22,000 votes, which is 0.75 percent of all ballots cast. That wasn’t close enough for the state to pay for a recount. Instead, Stein is covering the estimated $3.5 million cost.

Stein won barely 1 percent of the vote, so her demand for a recount is little more than a publicity stunt. Nonetheless, Stein is following state rules, so this gratu-

itous exercise in double-checking must proceed.

That’s fine.

The recount should show the public that county clerks across Wisconsin do a great job of carefully and accurately tallying ballots. And in the unlikely event the review finds something awry, then this process will definitely be worth it. Any problems, from small to stunning, can be fixed before the next election.

But don’t get too excited or troubled. Even if a recount showed that Trump had lost Wisconsin because of a clerical mistake or computer hack, Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton would still need to flip Pennsylvania and Michigan to put the national election in question.

The chances of that are beyond slim.

So make the best of your recount, Wisconsin. You’re getting a free test of the state’s voting system that we’re confident will produce reassuring results.

While a truly national third party wouldn’t necessarily be bad, smaller niche parties are ill-suited to our federalist system. This system already divides power between the states and the federal government, and uses checks and balances to temper the legislative, executive and judicial branches’ authority.

In Europe’s parliamentary governments, by contrast, it’s not unusual to see multiple parties split the national vote several ways, enabling a politician with limited support to head the government (provided he or she can assemble a ruling coalition with other minority parties).

That arrangement won’t work in our system of built-in tensions and checks between the president and Congress. And yet, eliminating the electoral college could produce

such an unworkable situation – not through small parties but wealthy individuals. Aside from the Democratic and Republican nominees, a handful of billionaires could run campaigns focused especially on, say, Texas and Florida, or California and New York.

One of them could win the presidency with a narrow slice of the vote. With so small a plurality, and no major party’s support, this president would face fierce headwinds.

The electoral college is a curious institution, concocted by the Founding Fathers struggling to balance the influence of big and small states.

It’s not perfect. But until we have a clearly better replacement, let’s stick with it.

Trump and the outstate Midwest redraw partisan lines Would any Republican besides Donald Trump have beaten Hillary Clinton and been elected the 45th president? It’s an interesting question, not susceptible to a definitive answer, but with consequences for politics going forward.

Last fall, I shared the widespread view that Clinton was the only Democrat who could lose to Trump and Trump was the only Republican who could lose to Clinton. Given the fact that elections are a zero-sum game because one candidate must win, this view was more an expression of distaste rather than a prophecy.

But it was based also on polling conducted during the spring, before Trump eliminated his remaining Republican opponents in the Indiana primary May 3. National polls and some state polls showed Marco Rubio running stronger against Clinton than Trump, with John Kasich running even stronger and Ted Cruz a bit better.

This seemed to make sense then.

Trump had much higher negatives, especially among white college graduates, who had voted 56 percent to 42 percent for Mitt Romney in 2012. Without similar support, how could he hope to win?

We have an answer to that question now. Springtime polls seemed to assume the electorate would look much like the one in 2012. The signs that Trump would run much better than Romney among noncollege-educated whites weren’t very

VIEWS Michael Barone clear, particularly when his controversial comments caused his overall numbers to sag.

Going into the fall, few polls showed the surge of votes that decided the election in what I have called the outstate Midwest – the counties outside metropolitan areas with a million-plus people in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio and (sort-of-Midwestern) Pennsylvania, states with 64 electoral votes that went to Barack Obama in 2012 and Trump in 2016. Those outstate areas trended the same way as Iowa, none of whose 99 counties is in a metro area with a million-plus people and whose six electoral votes went for Obama and for Trump. There, polls showed Trump opening up a significant lead over Clinton in mid-September. In Iowa and the outstates, Trump won percentages higher than George W. Bush did in 2004, while Clinton ran far behind Obama’s 2012 showing – 12 points behind in outstate Ohio, 11 points behind in Iowa and outstate Michigan, 9 points behind in outstate Wisconsin and 8 points behind in outstate Pennsylvania.

These are all places with many non-

college-educated whites and few blacks, Hispanics and Asians. Trump’s stands on trade and immigration – distinctly different from those of other Republicans – were surely partly responsible for his outstate margins, and it seems unlikely another Republican nominee could have matched them.

Two other factors were in play, factors that led to sharp Democratic gains in these same areas in the 1970s. One was honesty. The outstate Midwest recoiled against Richard Nixon’s Republicans in the Watergate years, and this year, these voters had a similar reaction to Clinton’s email lawbreaking and lies. That helped Trump, though it probably would have helped any other Republican nominee.

The other factor was dovishness.

The Upper Midwest has long been the most isolationist part of the country. In the 1970s, voters there reacted against Republicans’ support of the Vietnam War. This year, they seem to have moved toward Trump, who opposed military interventions supported by other Republicans.

So I find myself leaning reluctantly toward the conclusion that no other Republican could have won, at least the way Trump did. Yes, others would have run better with white college graduates, whom Trump carried by only a 49 percent to 45 percent margin, and would have run much better among

groups with high levels of social connectedness, such as Mormons in Utah and Dutch-Americans in metro Grand Rapids, Michigan. But Trump saw, or stumbled into taking advantage of, an opening spotted by only a few political analysts – blogger Steve Sailer way back in 2001, RealClearPolitics’ Sean Trende in a 2013 article series and FiveThirtyEight’s Harry Enten in analyzing Republican Joni Ernst’s big Senate win in Iowa in 2014.

That opening was the fact that Democrats were taking for granted their above-national-average support from noncollege-educated outstate voters in their determination to build a new, “ascendant” majority of blacks, Hispanics, single women and millennials. They figured that outstate Obama voters were locked into the Democratic Party and didn’t need any special attention. Turns out they weren’t and they did.

So the familiar partisan lines of the past 20 years have been redrawn, and now we have a more downscale Republican Party and a Democratic Party confined to its coastal and campus cocoons.

We’ll see how that works out.

Dylan Hottsmith scored his 10th goal of the season for Wisconsin-Whitewater on a header into the upper corner of the goal in the 40th minute against Benedictine in an NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournanment second-round game Nov. 13. But the DeKalb alumnus and the Warhawks lost, 2-1.

On Friday, Hottsmith was named to the All-National Soccer Coaches Association All North Region first team.

His 10 goals were a team high, and with three assists, was second on the Warhawks with 23 points. Hottsmith scored two game-winning goals, and has 17 goals and 10 assists in his career at Whitewater.

Alyassa Burgess shot 1 for 5 from the field for three points as the Ripon women’s basketball team lost to Cornell, 69-47, Saturday. The freshman exercise science major from DeKalb also had three rebounds, a steal and a block in 11 minutes.

On the season, Burgess is averaging 10 minutes a game for Ripon (3-3).

• • • Julia Moll has played in all six games for the Beloit women’s basketball team and has averaged 18 minutes. The junior guard from Sycamore is 4 of 13 from 3-point range and is averaging 3.5 points a game. A sociology major, Moll has 10 steals and 11 assists for the Bucs (2-4).

“Sometimes there were tons of guys when we went to the bigger invites – if it’s a JV and varsity invite and I’m the only girl there. It definitely is a confidence builder, because it’s much more of a challenge to play with the boys, and it’s an entirely different game from when I’m playing in the summer in girls tournaments.

“Boys have two reactions when they see that I can play with them: they either get really nervous or really think it’s cool to see a girl play.”

Although both Carpenter and DeKalb coach John Cordes admit she had her ups and downs throughout the season, she finished with the third-best average score on the boys team. Her mark of 40.4 was behind senior Austin Freeman (38) and freshman Jack Paeglow (40.1).

He was scheduled to fly with the team to Detroit after the game with the Trail Blazers, but there’s no doubt the Bulls (11-9) could have used Rondo’s services against Portland, especially late in the game.

Butler did his part, scoring 26 points, while Dwyane Wade had a team-high 34, but with Rondo out, Hoiberg was forced to start Jerian Grant (five points), and finish with reserve Isaiah Canaan, who scored 10 points.

Neither could slow Damian Lillard, who scored 11 first-quarter points and finished with 30. “[Rondo’s] obviously very important with what we do in this building,” Hoiberg said. “That’s not the reason we lost [Monday night].”

McDermott practices with Windy City Bulls

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – There finally is a more definite timetable for a Doug McDermott return to the court for the Bulls, and it could come as soon as Thursday, when the San Antonio Spurs come to town.

McDermott officially was assigned to the D-League Windy City Bulls on Monday morning, and was able to practice with them at Doug the Advocate Center in McDermott the afternoon.

Coach Fred Hoiberg said McDermott, who has missed the past 10 games since suffering a second concussion of the season Nov. 12, came out of the practice with a thumbs-up.

“Doug had a good day,” Hoiberg said. “He’s rusty, obviously, having his first full-contact practice, but (Windy City coach) Nate (Loenser) ran a good practice, did a good job of getting up and down. [Doug’s] going to go again

“Hopefully, he has another good day and we’ll see what happens for Thursday.”

The biggest concern for McDermott is making sure he is over the mental hurdle of contact, especially because the second concussion has been a lot

harder to recover from.

“I think that’s a big thing that he has to get over, taking that hit for the first time and knowing he’s going to be OK,” Hoiberg said of his third-year player. “The good thing is they have this concussion protocol in place for a reason. Doug’s done a great job of following the rules and making it through all the steps. Now it’s about getting his timing back, getting over that fear or maybe clearing that mental hurdle.

“You can’t go out and play with any type of fear. When you’re cleared, and, hopefully, Doug is soon, he’s got to go out and play the way he always does, which is with great pace. We miss his cutting. We miss his floor-spacing. So when he’s cleared to play, he just has to go out and play the way he knows how.”

McDermott was averaging 10.6 points and 23.7 minutes a game coming off the bench.

The other injury: The D-League practices might be getting a bit more crowded, as Hoiberg also announced that Michael Carter-Williams (left wrist injury) was expected to be re-evaluated Tues-

day, and if the wrist, as well as his left knee bone bruise, both are healed, he could join McDermott with Windy City and start working his way back.

“If he has a good report, we may send him down for a couple practices to get him game ready,” Hoiberg said of Carter-Williams.

That’s another reason why the Bulls are loving having a D-League team just miles away now.

“It’s been awesome,” Hoiberg said.

“Last year when (Mike) Dunleavy missed the first 50-plus games of the season, we had to send him out to Santa Cruz to practice with their team. (Cristiano) Felicio practiced with the team in Canton. So just to have that team in our backyard has been a real luxury.”

The Wade plan: Dwyane Wade has sat out the back end of two back-to-backs so far this season, and with the Bulls finishing up a back-to-back with Detroit on Tuesday, Wade’s status was in the air.

The plan was to bring him to Detroit and then make a decision before the game, based on how the 34-year-old is feeling.

CHICAGO – This Bulls team has its flaws.

Those have been on full display for all to see over the past week.

“The one thing I like about this group is I feel like we are better suited to handle adversity, bumps in the road that you have in an NBA season,” guard Jimmy Butler said recently, when talking about the makeRajon Rondo up of the roster.

Butler’s assessment is about to be tested.

Before Monday night’s 112-110 loss to Portland, the Bulls announced that veteran guard Rajon Rondo was suspended without pay for that game because of “conduct detrimental to the team.”

Although coach Fred Hoiberg said it was an organizational decision, he would not offer details of what led to the suspension, insisting it was a private matter and in the past.

Multiple sources, however, said Rondo got into a “heated argument with [assistant coach Jim Boylen] and

Hoiberg not only met with Rondo on Sunday to discuss the matter, but also spoke to him on the phone Monday.

The coach said he believes the relationship with the veteran 1s just fine.

“I’ll say this: Rajon, as we’ve all said, has been great,” Hoiberg said.

“A great teammate. I’ve enjoyed the relationship that we developed, and again, it’s not going to change moving forward.”

The source said it was his understanding that both Rondo and Boylen had spoken since, and put it to rest.

Not that Rondo being Rondo, however, should have snuck up on the Bulls, as he’s had run-ins that cost him game checks in Boston, Dallas and his latest in Sacramento last season, after the NBA suspended him for using a homophobic slur toward referee Bill Kennedy.

But the Bulls did their best to take this case individually, rather than throw it on the Rondo résumé of six previous suspensions. At least that was the attempt. “ ’Do’s’ been great,” Butler said. “I think this is just another bump in the road. He’s a phenomenal ... teammate, and I back him on everything.

Turner scores 29 points in Indian Creek’s loss to Newark

Olivia Turner scored 29 points, but it wasn’t enough for the Indian Creek girls basketball team as Newark made a shot at the buzzer for a 52-50 win Monday.

Turner made seven 3-pointers in the loss for the Timberwolves (1-6 overall, 0-2 Little Ten Conference).

“It was a good team effort,” coach Paul Muchmore said. “But Olivia also had a great game. Her shots started falling, and it was one of the best individual offensive efforts we’ve seen.”

The Timberwolves had the ball with about 36 seconds left in a tie game. Muchmore called a timeout to go over what he said he hoped was the final play of the game.

But Newark disrupted the play and forced a jump ball with 2.5 seconds left. Jasmine Mitchell hit the game winner for Newark.

DeKalb girls bowling team sweeps LaSalle-Peru

Kaylee McFarland rolled a 628 series to lead the Barbs to a 2,916-2,580 win over the Cavaliers. McFarland had a high game of 235. Regan Harold added a 556 series for the Barbs in the win.

Hahn: ‘We know what we want to do’

The Sox are encouraged about the quality of players who have been discussed. On the other hand, Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, 80, has seen enough young phenoms come and go over the years to know the risks as well.

“That’s why when you’re trading a player of stature, you’ve got to get multiple can’t-miss prospects back,” Reinsdorf said in an interview with CSN Chicago’s Chuck Garfien. “That’s why it makes it tough to trade a player of great stature.”

Sale likely won’t be the only one, and he doesn’t have to be the first to go for others to fall in line, Hahn said.

Left-hander Jose Quintana also is a possibility, and if he and Sale are, that means everyone is. In explaining why second baseman Brett Lawrie was resigned over the weekend, Hahn pointed to Lawrie’s flexibility to play third base – which might suggest Todd Frazier, who becomes a free agent after next season, will be playing for another team.

“We are pretty confident about what we want to try to accomplish and how that’s going to unfold,” Hahn said.

Note: Quintana will pitch for Colombia in the World Baseball Classic in the spring.

Wide net cast for pitching, but don’t expect to land big one

NATIONAL HARBER, Md. – The Cubs publicly cop to exactly two things when it comes to their efforts to upgrade their pitching staff – particularly their bullpen – during this week’s winter meetings.

First: “It’s safe to say we’re kicking the tires on any pitching that’s available,” general manager Jed Hoyer said as the meetings opened in the Washington, D.C., area Monday.

And: “I don’t think we’re the Chicago team that’s going to be making headlines,” he said.

That leaves a lot of ground in the middle. And that’s exactly where the team is expected to fix its gaze on the market going forward this winter, barring Dodgers free-agent closer Kenley Jansen suddenly deciding he wants to pitch in Chicago for less money and fewer years than the Yankees, Marlins or his own Dodgers offer.

A source familiar with the team’s efforts said the Cubs are putting much of their efforts into “about 10 guys” on

the winter pitching market who offer reliable track records but at far less the commitments of the high-profile Jansens and Aroldis Chapmans of the free-agent world.

Those include right-hander Brad Ziegler (1.85 and 2.25 ERAs the past two seasons) and left-hander Jerry Blevins (2.79 for the Mets in ’16), both of whom would command significantly shorter commitments.

Jed Hoyer Hoyer reiterated Monday what he and team president Theo Epstein had said after last winter and heading into this offseason: that the club did most of its 2017 spending before the 2016 season, when it targeted a two-year window with one winter.

“Listen, I think we’ve set expectations appropriately,” Hoyer said. “This offseason I don’t expect that same level of activity.”

Look for the Cubs to seek starting pitching depth through trades in which they seek controllable young players who can open the season at Tri-

ple-A if necessary as the Cubs give lefty Mike Montgomery a bona fide shot at starting.

And look for multiple bullpen additions (to go with the just-signed lefty Brian Duensing) without necessarily a focus on acquiring a nominal closer.

“I definitely think we’ll bolster our bullpen,” said Hoyer, who suggested the club has in-house closer candidates (Hector Rondon, Carl Edwards Jr.).

“Whether we do that by adding a number of good relievers or whether we do it by adding a guy who’s a known closer, I’m not sure.”

On Monday, a known closer (Mark Melancon) cost the Giants a four-year, $62 million commitment. And Chapman is said to seek a six-year deal and more than $100 million.

“The postseason was reliever-centric,” Hoyer said. “Bullpens have always been really valuable, but with the way they were used and talked about, really not only this postseason but the last two or three, people are definitely putting a lot of financial importance on having a good bullpen.”

The Cubs?

“I think we see the value of it,” Hoyer said, citing the Cubs’ trade of their top prospect (Gleyber Torres) for Chapman in July. “By making that move, I think we showed that we sort of agree with that to a certain extent.”

Cub chatter: The Cubs have decided against sending Kyle Schwarber to winter ball as a way to catch up on at-bats missed during a season spent rehabbing from reconstructive knee surgery. “I think he’s proved he can hit major league pitching,” Hoyer said, referring to Schwarber’s dramatic return from the disabled list as a World Series designated hitter (7 for 17, three walks). “He’s just going to continue the rehab and be full-go when we start spring training.” … The Cubs aren’t spending any of their focus on hitters for the big league roster, but Hoyer said finding a capable catcher with some experience as depth at Triple-A is on the winter to-do list. … Speaking of catchers, Hoyer downplayed Miguel Montero’s displeasure with his playing time this year and likes the fit of young Willson Contreras (as the starter) with the veteran Montero as a 2017 tandem.

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. – Without specifically using the “R” word on the first day of baseball’s Winter Meetings, White Sox general manager Rick Hahn made it quite clear Monday the Sox are in rebuilding mode and that ace Chris Sale tops the long list of players on the trading block.

“We know what we want to do,” Hahn said. “We have known all along what we wanted to accomplish.”

That means, after four straight years of losing and being “mired in mediocrity,” as Hahn put it this summer, Sox fans should prepare to get bogged down in a notch or more below mediocre for a couple of years while the young players Hahn hopes to acquire turn a corner and put the franchise on better footing.

“If you have a plan,” said Hahn, speaking openly about Sale while discussing what the Sox want to accomplish this offseason, “and you articulate it clearly [to fans] … . Certainly

And so the time is now for a new plan.

To get it off the ground in a big way, Hahn knows he can use a potential mother lode in Sale for a return of prospects or young major league ready players. If fellow GMs here are testing him to see if he will back off a steep price that is set, he said they are wasting their time. The Sox know what they want and won’t cave “in the heat of the negotiation or an environment like this where there is a bit of a fever pitch to make moves.”

“Otherwise, you are compromising too much in terms of the value,” he said.

Other GMs here are predicting Sale won’t be moved this week because of that. Hahn wouldn’t be surprised, either.

“It’s conceivable,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of really productive conversations, both leading up to getting here last night as well as since we’ve been here. It could come quick on certain fronts, or it may well be a thing that takes us through the holidays.”

Floyd shakes off early jitters, blockers

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – Leonard Floyd admitted he was playing “jittery” at the start of Sunday’s 26-6 win over the 49ers.

It’s hard to blame the Bears’ first-round draft pick, considering the last time he played with contact he was taken off the field on a backboard and loaded into an ambulance.

“I can’t really remember much after the hit,” Floyd said Monday, his first time with reporters since the play. “I just knew that the trainers [were] telling me that I was going to be all right, I was going to be fine, and I was just listening to them the whole time and what they were saying.”

That concussion suffered against the Giants a little more than two weeks ago was much more scary looking than physically harmful, as Floyd played 52 out of 58 snaps in his return to the field, notching

Floyd said as the game went on, he “settled down and started being back to myself.” He brushed off the early struggles,

too, coach John Fox noticed.

“What was impressive about Leonard was being able to put maybe a couple of not some of his better plays behind

him,” Fox said. “I thought he responded really well in the second half.”

Floyd’s safety in the fourth quarter in his first snow game capped the Bears’ first win since Halloween.

“I didn’t get a rush on him pretty much the whole game.

I figured my first rush against him, he was expecting speed. I was leaning hard in my stance, showing like I was going to get up the field. Inside move was there,” Floyd said, describing the sack of Blaine Gabbert in the end zone. “It felt good. It felt great. I finally got a safety being in the league. So I got it off the list. It felt great.”

Praise for Hicks: From his defensive line spot, Akiem Hicks played every snap Sunday and sacked Colin Kaepernick twice, giving him six on the season, which is a career high.

Fox has not been surprised

by Hicks’ pass-rush prowess, even from an interior line position.

“He’s fit really well for us as far as his physical stature. But he does have pass-rush ability,” Fox said. “He actually was in a 4-3 at one point in New Orleans, he was a defensive end, which I think is beneficial. It shows a little about his athleticism. So he’s got a combination of both. He’s been a good get.”

Bullard’s wake-up call: Those looking for more out of thirdround pick Jonathan Bullard didn’t get to see that Sunday when the defensive lineman was a healthy scratch. His snap count had diminished over the previous three games, too.

“I think there’s a variety of ways to motivate young people,” Fox said. “He’s a player that we do like, that we’re trying to bring the best out of him like we do all players.”

Fox went on to say that Sunday was a style of game in which the Bears “had other guys we were going to lean on.”

Crawford expected to miss 2 to 3 weeks after appendectomy

“I thought he played great again (Sunday). He gave us a chance, and you know, more than a chance to win,” Duncan Keith said. “He stopped breakaways and made big plays all night. We’re lucky to have him as a goalie we can look to when we’ve got a guy like Crow out.”

For Darling, it’s another opportunity to string together starts. He hasn’t

load, pressure or how you want to approach it on a regular basis,” Quenneville said. “But the expectations when you do get it can be different. Some guys handle it the same way, going every fourth or fifth game and don’t change a beat. I think Darls did exactly that.

“Had a good demeanor, had a good approach, was patient as he always was. I think that helped a lot.”

Darling becomes the starter at a tricky time for the Hawks. Based on their record, they once again are a Stanley Cup contender, but cracks are showing, and those cracks are even more perilous with Jonathan Toews’ uncertain return.

To keep the Hawks near the top of the Western Conference and avoid squandering chances for points, they will need Darling and everybody trying to fill in for Toews to contribute.

“I think we have a lot of depth where we can fill in and try to step up for those guys, especially if they’re missing time,” Patrick Kane said. “Every team deals with injuries, we’re just dealing with a couple big injuries for us at this time.”

Scott Darling has been here before.

He played in 11 games late last season when Corey Crawford was out with an upper-body injury. He briefly took over as the starting goalie during the first round of the 2015 postseason, helping the Blackhawks get past the Nashville Predators on their way to an eventual Stanley Cup title.

Now he’s being called on again, and at a time when the Hawks need him.

Darling figures to get the vast majority of the playing time while Crawford recovers from the appendectomy he underwent Saturday in Philadelphia. Despite losing both starts with Crawford out, Darling has come through. On Sunday, he stopped 30 shots and turned away three Winnipeg

done that much with the Hawks and is eager for the chance he likely will get with Crawford out for an expected two to three weeks.

Of course, Darling isn’t thrilled about why he is starting, but still wants to take advantage of the opportunity.

“Obviously, you don’t want it to happen this way, but there’s not too many other ways it could happen, so it’s an exciting opportunity for me,” Darling said. “It’s exciting. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t know how long Corey will be gone or what the game plan is, but I’m just excited to get a few more starts than usual.”

Darling starts only the occasional game, be it the second half of a back-toback or whenever coach Joel Quenneville senses Crawford needs a rest. To thrive in that role takes a certain kind of preparedness, and to become the de facto starter for a couple of weeks after being the backup also takes a different mindset.

“I think that’s what it’s all about in that role. You’re ready to play once every four or five games, and then all of a sudden you’re playing every night and it’s a different job description, work-

And though Nigeria was declared polio-free in 2014, two new cases last August and a third case in September have raised the alarm. World health organizations now are redoubling their efforts to implement ongoing vaccination programs.

Is this polio epidemic a danger to the U.S.? The answer is no. Vaccination rates among adults are extremely high, and as long as parents continue to be vigilant about vaccinations and boosters for their children, we as a nation will remain immune to this terrible disease.

According to CDC guidelines, children should be vaccinated with inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) four times – at 2 months of age, at 4 months of age, a dose between 6 and 18 months of age, and a booster dose between 4 and 6 years of age. Until this vaccination schedule is complete, children should not travel to an area where polio still is an active infection.

Eradicating polio worldwide has been one of the most remarkable and successful international health initiatives. Its ongoing success depends on each one of us continuing to be vigilant about vaccination.

Dear Doctors: I heard about a polio outbreak in Nigeria this summer. Might there be an outbreak here in the United States?

Dear Reader: Polio is a crippling, and sometimes fatal, infectious disease that once was common in the U.S. Caused by the polio virus, the disease was widespread among children. During the 1940s and ’50s, outbreaks caused spinal and respiratory paralysis in 15,000 sufferers each year. With potentially dire outcomes and no cure, polio became one of the most feared childhood diseases in the United States.

That changed thanks to the development of the polio vaccine in the mid1950s, and to the success of our ongoing national vaccination program. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states polio has been eliminated in the U.S. In our country, vaccination programs have resulted in a sharp decline in the number of polio cases, from 35,000 in 1953 to 5,300 four years later. With the introduction of an oral vaccine in 1961, the number of new cases in the U.S. continued to plummet. There have been no new cases of polio reported in the U.S. since 1979. The last known case of polio acquired outside the U.S. and imported into the country was in 1993.

However, as you point out, polio remains a global concern. International health organizations have made polio vaccination a priority, with more than 2.5 billion children vaccinated worldwide since 1988. As a result, the overall number of new polio cases worldwide has dropped a remarkable 99 percent.

The second-most prolific author of bridge books is Ron Klinger from Australia. He is known for packing a lot of material into a small space. His latest book is “Defending Doubled Contracts” (Weidenfeld & Nicolson).

The complexity of the deals is variable, as are the levels of the contracts (the one-level to the seven-level) and the sizes of the available penalties (from down one to down six). All the deals occurred at the table; Klinger composed none himself.

In this deal, how did East-West defend against five diamonds doubled after West led the spade king?

Many Souths would have opened three diamonds with the seven-card suit, hoping that a good heart fit did not exist. This South tried to catch up on the next round. If West had not doubled, maybe East would have bid six no-trump, which would have failed on a non-diamond lead; or six clubs, which could have been made; or, best of all, five no-trump pick a slam.

Sitting East-West were two Australian internationals, Ted Chadwick and David Beauchamp. Under West’s spade king, East dropped the nine, a suit-preference signal for hearts. (He wondered if West had led a singleton and thought it highly likely that West had the heart ace.)

West shifted to the heart deuce.

East won with his king, returned the suit and received a ruff. Then he underled his club ace to give partner the lead for a fourth round of hearts, East overruffing dummy’s diamond queen with his king.
