Experts warn of mental health woes as wildfires ravage South

The Associated Press ATLANTA – When U.S. Forest Ranger Jody Bandy confronted the man in the Pisgah National Forest, he said he’d been at the nearby wildfire and “couldn’t take it anymore.”

Then he ran from the officer, tumbling head-over-head down the mountainside, into the river below and slamming into boulders in the water, Bandy said in a court affidavit.

After an ambulance took the bleeding man to a hospital, Bandy peered through the front windshield of his pickup and saw what appeared to be a suicide note on the dash, the affidavit says.

The Nov. 19 encounter in western North Carolina underscores the toll these wildfires can take on people who live through them.

Many survivors need help to cope, and signs of problems such as nightmares, depression and anxiety might not show up for months, said Valerie Cole of the American Red Cross. In some ways, escaping a fire-filled forest as thousands did recently in and around Gatlinburg, Tennessee, can be more traumatic than hurricanes, floods or earthquakes, experts say. One reason: Flames spread so rapid-

ly that people had no time to prepare.

“To have your life turned upside down is much more difficult than if you had time to brace for it, and in this case I don’t think people had time to brace for it,” said Becky Stoll, vice president of crisis and disaster management at Centerstone, one of the nation’s largest behavioral health care providers.

Then, as residents raced from the woods, they saw orange and red ribbons of fire draped over homes, rolling across mountains.

“If you can see the flames nearby, that’s going to be a visual image that’s going to stay with you,” said Cole, who helped victims of a devastating 2011 wildfire in Alberta, Canada.

Those kinds of images may have long-term consequences, she said.

Until Nov. 28, people in and around Gatlinburg went about their daily lives, even as the wildfire burned several miles away in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Then, in one night, everything changed.

“All of the sudden, it’s gone. You can’t go home. Your home’s not there. Your car may not be there. Your health may not be there,” said Marie Williams, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

Sycamore armory bids farewell to Capt. Colmone, welcomes Capt. Lemmon

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – For the past 13 months, Capt. Ryan Colmone has led the battery stationed at the National Guard armory in Sycamore. On Saturday morning, the battery performed an official transfer of command and passed those duties on to Capt. Robert Lemmon.

Outgoing Capt. Colmone said the soldiers at the Sycamore armory are a field artillery battery.

“We provide first support for the maneuver troops, so when they need artillery, we go into action,” he said.

Colmone said these troops were part of the joint task force Phoenix deployment in Afghanistan in 2008 to ‘09.

Colmone, who lives in Princeton with his wife and children, will be transferring to the 33rd Brigade Headquarters in Urbana to be a fire support coordinator. He said he will miss working with the troops in Sycamore.

“This was the best year of my military career so far. This battery and what it means for the Illinois National Guard and for the community – it does an outstanding job in everything it does,” Colmone said. “These guys are the best, and it’s going to be really hard to leave, but Capt. Lemmon is going to do an excellent job.”

The ceremony honored the departing commander and recognized “the official transfer of authority and responsibility for soldiers, mission and equipment” from one commander to the next, said 1st Lt. Lamar Brown, the master of ceremonies.

“Historically, the colors served as a point around which the unit rallied in battle,” he said. “The colors are traditionally at the forefront of a formation and signify the continuity of the organization, even though individual members come and go.”

Mayor Ken Mundy, Alderman Alan Bauer and Illinois Rep. Robert Pritchard attended the ceremony.

Before the passing of the colors, Colmone addressed the soldiers one last time. “To lead this battery was an honor and not something I will ever forget,” he said. “You guys set the standard.”

The battery then performed the change of command ceremony and the passing of the colors. The Battery 1st Sgt. Jason Kwak handed the colors to the outgoing captain, Colmone, who

Lemmon expressed thanks as he addressed the battery. He said he appreciated the members’ confidence and support as he took on his new leadership role.

“And lastly, I’d like to thank my wife, who isn’t able to be here today.

She’s always very supportive and there for me. She couldn’t be here physically today, as she just had a baby three weeks ago.”

Lemmon said he looks forward to his new duties.

“My main vision for this battery is to continue the success it’s had and to focus on safety. Really, the main thing is relying on the [noncommissioned officers] to help drive training.”

He teaches military science at the University of Missouri, so he and his family recently moved to Columbia,

Missouri.

“I grew up in Homewood, in the south suburbs, and the past nine years I’ve been living in central Illinois because I was teaching at Illinois State University,” he said.

Lemmon said he is prepared for the long commute between jobs.

“I decided to stay in the Illinois Guard because I love the people,” he said. “Even though it is a bit of a hike, I’d say it’s worth it.”

Ellwood House hosts Holiday Open House

news@daily-chronicle.com As a child growing up in Sycamore, Karen Erlandson visited the Ellwood House Museum every December with her family for the museum’s Holiday Traditions open house.

And now that she has a family of her own, the Wisconsin resident was excited to visit the historical mansion once again, this time with her sons, who are age 9 and 6.

“I used to love coming here, and I remember all the rooms and wanted to bring my children,” she said.

“I think it’s good for them to see because now they have a better appreciation for how things used to be. And the decorations are beautiful.”

The museum has been hosting its Holiday Open House, which features live Christmas music from area ensembles and complimentary refreshments, for 48 years.

More than 20 businesses, nonprofit groups and volunteers spend hundreds of hours decorating the mansion’s rooms for the annual open house.

The decorations and themes are different each year, which bring visitors back season after season. The event always is held the first weekend of December, and this year’s theme was jewel tones.

Brian Reis, executive director of the Ellwood House Museum, said the event kicks off the holiday season for many residents.

“The amazing architecture, woodwork and ornamentation combined with the talents of local businesses and decorators to present the house in a new way each year makes it exciting,” he said. “It’s special for us because it’s a chance to see people who don’t normally come here, but because it’s a special event, people come from all over the region to see this. Especially with the live music, this is one of those events people should come to each year.”

Kathy Hallgren of Sycamore said she always wanted to decorate a room in the Ellwood House for the museum’s annual Holiday Open House.

And this year, Hallgren and two of her friends decorated the home’s library with festive, jewel-toned Christmas decorations.

“I like to be creative, and my friends and I pooled our things together and it turned out very nice,” she said. “I’m proud of it. There’s a lot of tradition in the community for this home. They like to start their

Terri McGee of Sycamore was visiting with her daughter and 11-yearold grandson. She said she had been to the open house years ago and was happy to be back.

“I enjoy the Ellwood House so much, and this just represents everything about the season – family, giving and celebration,” she said. “The decorations are so beautiful. I love all the different rooms, and the lighting adds to the ambiance. It’s important to carry on traditions and also to educate and share with younger generations.”

Volunteer Tirza Lisle, 17, said people were interested in learning more about the house, and she was very impressed with all of the thoughtful questions visitors were asking her.

“Most people don’t live in a home like this. They are curious about the mansion and about how other people lived. This is a piece of local history.

And of course they love the Christmas decorations,” she said.

Barbara Lawson of DeKalb hadn’t been to the home in years, and said she was amazed at how beautiful the house looked.

“The library is absolutely gorgeous, just the decorations and color scheme,” she said. “All of the rooms are so pretty though. And I love the music.”

This was the first time Mary Anne Sylos of DeKalb had been in the home.

She said she’s always wanted to visit.

“It’s amazing and beautiful. I love the intricate details of all this old-fashioned décor. The live music Brian Reis Ellwood House Museum executive director just adds to the ambiance,” she said.

Volunteer Rae Slowik was showing off the home’s library and said people were very drawn to the room’s bright colors and Christmas “feel.”

OBITUARIES GEORGE D. PERKINS SR.

Born: January 30, 1926; in DeKalb, IL Died: December 2, 2016; in Rock Falls, IL

George D. Perkins Sr., 90, of Rock Falls, Illinois, formerly of DeKalb, died Friday, December 2, 2016, at Sauk Valley Senior Living and Rehab in Rock Falls, Illinois.

He was born Jan. 30, 1926, in DeKalb, the son of Paul and Gillie (Farris) Perkins, George married Ruth A. Ellett on Dec. 13, 1956, in DeKalb.

George was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was a carpenter and later owned George Perkins Construction.

He is survived by his daughters, Deborah (Paul) Harmon of Franklin Grove, Pat Perkins of Wisconsin; his son, George D. Perkins, Jr. of Yorkville; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister, Pauline (Robert) Loux of DeKalb; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth in 2009; brothers, Lonnie and Pete Perkins; sisters, Joyce Oleson and Ann Della Palmquist.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 7, at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb, with full military honors by DeKalb American Legion Post 66.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 6, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.

Don completed his basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia and was later stationed in Bamberg, Germany for two years. He was honorably discharged in 1959.

Don worked as a manager of production planning and inventory control for Anaconda Ericsson in Sycamore, IL before being transferred to Overland Park, KS in 1970. Don was a lifelong member of the Sycamore Elks Club.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending his summers at the Lake of the Ozarks.

He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears and proudly cheered his beloved Cubs to a World Series victory. He also enjoyed snow skiing with friends in Colorado in the wintertime.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marcia Stroberg; his two sisters, Phyllis Gilmore and Carol Foster; his children, Tina (Steve) Jobe, Dan (Karen) Stroberg, and John (Vanda) Stroberg; his grandchildren, Dr. Amanda Jobe and Shannon (Joe) McQuillen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Berniece Stroberg; as well as infant son, Floyd Lester Stroberg.

A visitation will take place at Salem Lutheran Church (1145 DeKalb Ave. Sycamore, IL 60178) on Saturday, December 10, 2016 from 9:30 to 11:30 am with service to DONALD R. STROBERG begin at 11:30 am.

Sheriff’s deputies make 7 DUI arrests in mobilization

SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office released enforcement numbers from Nov. 14 to 27 as part of its annual Click It or Ticket mobilization to crack down on unbuckled or impaired drivers.

In the two-week mobilization, the sheriff’s office issued nine seat-belt citations, seven DUI citations, nine drug arrests, 27 speeding citations, 11 uninsured motorists, seven suspended or revoked license citations and one felony DUI arrest on a multiple offender and apprehended one

fugitive.

Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said in a news statement that officers still are out and will continue to issue seat-belt citations.

Mobilization efforts have been enforced by state and local law enforcement agencies across Illinois and are funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation and are part of a nationwide campaign to stop highway fatalities resulting from impaired driving. DeKALB – Police are investigating after a man reported that three men beat him and robbed him in a parking lot Saturday morning on the Northern Illinois University campus.

The man reported that he was walking through Parking Lot O, near the new residence halls shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday when he was robbed. He told police that he was beaten and that the suspects “took personal property from him,” according to a safety bulletin from the NIU Police Department. The bulletin didn’t specify what was taken. The three suspects left traveling north on Annie Glidden Road, according to the report. The three suspects were described as a light-skinned man about 6 feet tall wearing a gray beanie-style hat; a light-skinned, heavyset man; and a darker-skinned man, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, wearing a gray sweater, according to the bulletin.

NIU police are investigating the incident.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies, along with Genoa and Kingston police, went to 30880 Southwoods Drive near Genoa about 10 p.m. Friday after Genoa police got an anonymous tip about an underage party at the home, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

When police arrived, they saw multiple cars at the home that weren’t registered to that address, the release stated.

Police called the homeowner, who was out of town at the time of the party. The homeowner gave police permission to enter the home and break up the party, according to the release.

Police found about 30 people in the basement of the home, along with alcohol and marijuana. Those who had been drinking were cited for underage drinking and released to parents or other family members.

Those who abstained were allowed to leave after being tested, according to the release.

Jessica N. Mauger, 18, of the 30800 block of Southwoods Drive, was cited for possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana and released, according to police.

The home is owned by Douglas R. Mauger, according to DeKalb County property tax records.

Another year of financial uncertainty looms

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Homeless shelters in Illinois and low-income college students who rely on state funds are facing another year of financial uncertainty as Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and majority Democratic lawmakers remain unable to make progress on resolving a budget war.

Several meetings during the past month have only served to prove how far apart the two sides are: Rauner, a former venture capitalist who took office two years vowing to overhaul how the state is managed, continues to insist Democrats pass part of his pro-business agenda, while they say he should focus on a budget deal without pre-conditions.

The money lawmakers approved as part of a six-month spending plan in June is about to run out, but they adjourned for the year Thursday without agreeing with the governor on a plan going forward. That means social service providers, like programs that deliver meals for homebound seniors and homeless shelters, will start the new year without state support. Some have already exhausted their budget reserves.

U of Illinois chancellor reviews emergency plans

URBANA – University of Illinois Chancellor Robert Jones said he’s confident the university has effective plans to deal with an emergency like this week’s carand-knife attack at Ohio State University that left 11 people injured and the attacker dead.

Jones offered public condolences to Ohio State University on Monday and said he planned to reach out to Ohio State’s president, Michael Drake, to offer support, The News-Gazette reported.

Jones said he met with University of Illinois Police Chief Jeff Christensen and other top administrators a couple of weeks ago to review campus emergency plans and was pleased with the procedures in place, particularly that it’s clear who would be in

Purple Christmas lights honor ‘Purple Rain’ singer

PARK RIDGE – An acclaimed home Christmas-light show in Park Ridge features purple lights this year in a tribute to the rock star who sang “Purple Rain.”

The Chicago Tribune reported that the Grant-Grusecki home decided to add the Prince tribute shortly after the Minnesota-based artist died of an opioids overdose in April. Among Prince’s many hits was the song “Purple Rain.”

Tina Grusecki said the family spends much of the year designing the elaborate show. It includes flashing lights synchronized to music that passing cars can hear on a radio channel. The show includes standards, such as “Holly Jolly Christmas” and “All Alone on Christmas.”

The Prince tribute has a medley of his songs, an illuminated drum kit – and

state workers. Every day that passes Illinois is going into debt – about $500 million a month, according to the state comptroller – because the court orders are forcing the state to spend more money than it’s collecting in taxes.

However, those court orders don’t cover higher education institutions and some social service programs. That has prompted some providers to close their doors and layoffs in higher education.

“They’re all going to be in the same pickle they were in last year,” said Rep. Elaine Nekritz, a Democrat from Buffalo Grove.

The six-month budget provided some relief, but some of that money went to cover debts that social service providers had incurred during the past 18 months. Colleges have received about two-thirds of the funding they typically get from the state and have no money for tuition grants for low-income students this semester or the next.

The Peoples Church of Chicago runs a shelter for the homeless that is scheduled to close by the end of December because it hasn’t received state support for over a year, said Dick Simpson, a member of the board that oversees the shelter. Nearly 80 people rely on the shelter on a daily basis and they’ll have to find help elsewhere.

Ukulele is a popular music-class addition

SPRINGFIELD – Dave Kinzer’s music class is jamming to the Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Matishyahu – on ukulele.

The 15-year veteran teacher told the (Springfield) State Journal-Register that his students at Springfield’s Ball Charter School stay focused on lessons because they are busy with the instruments in their hands.

Kinzer was awarded a $2,200 grant to buy 27 of the four-string instruments.

The teacher focuses on an instrument each year. He said he might ditch the recorder, xylophone or piano in the future because of the kids’ strumming success.

Students were hesitant at first but soon joined in when they realized they could change chords and strum.

Sixth-grader Mario Garcia-Perez said his favorite song is the Beatles’ “Paperback Writer.” He said the ukulele is easier and more fun than he imagined.

CANNON BALL, N.D. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Sunday that it won’t grant an easement for the Dakota Access oil pipeline in southern North Dakota, handing a victory to the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and its supporters, who argued the project would threaten the tribe’s water source and cultural sites.

North Dakota’s leaders criticized the decision, with Gov. Jack Dalrymple calling it a “serious mistake” that “prolongs the dangerous situation” of having several hundred protesters who are camped out on federal land during cold, wintry weather. U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer said it’s a “very chilling signal” for the future of infrastructure in the U.S. The four-state, $3.8 billion project is largely complete except for the now-blocked segment underneath Lake Oahe, a Missouri River reservoir. Assistant Secretary for Civil Works Jo-Ellen Darcy said in a news release that her decision was based on the need to “explore alternate routes” for the pipeline’s crossing. Her full decision doesn’t rule out that it could cross under the reservoir or north of Bismarck.

“Although we have had continuing discussion and exchanges of new information with the Standing Rock Sioux and Dakota Access, it’s clear that there’s more work to do,” Darcy said.

“The best way to complete that work responsibly and expeditiously is to explore alternate routes for the pipeline crossing.”

las-based Energy Transfer Partners, released a statement Sunday night slamming the decision as politically motivated and alleging that President Barack Obama’s administration was determined to delay the matter until he leaves office.

“The White House’s directive today to the Corps for further delay is just the latest in a series of overt and transparent political actions by an administration which has abandoned the rule of law in favor of currying favor with a narrow and extreme political constituency,” the company said.

President-elect Donald Trump, a pipeline supporter, will take office in January, although it wasn’t immediately clear what steps his administration would be able to take to reverse the Army Corps’ latest decision or how quickly that could happen.

The decision came a day before the government’s deadline for the several hundred people at the Oceti Sakowin, or Seven Council Fires, encampment to leave the federal land. But demonstrators said they’re prepared to stay, and authorities said they won’t forcibly remove them.

As the news spread Sunday, cheers and cheers and chants of “mni wichoni” – “water is life” in Lakota Sioux – broke out among the protesters. Some in the crowd banged drums.

Miles Allard, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux, said he was pleased but remained cautious, saying, “We don’t know what Trump is going to do.”

“The whole world is watching,” Allard added. “I’m telling all our people to stand up and not to leave until this is over.”

How Congress can respond to Trump’s Pentagon choice President-elect Donald Trump’s intention to nominate James Mattis as secretary of defense places Congress in a bind.

Is it duty-bound to reject an obviously well-qualified person for the job? Or would confirming Mattis, a retired four-star general, endanger the nation’s founding tradition of civilian control of the military?

The problem is that Mattis retired from the Marines only four years ago, short of the seven-year waiting period mandated by Congress.

The law was broken once before, for George Marshall in 1950. Marshall was a special case: The former highest-ranking U.S. military official in World War II, he had already served as secretary of state, lending his name to the post-war rebuilding project in Western Europe.

But when Congress voted to make an exception for Marshall, lawmakers insisted it be a one-time deal, stating that “no additional appointments of military men to that office shall be approved.”

Today’s Congress is not bound by the wishes of its forbears from 65 years ago, of course. But it owes them – as well as the authors of the Constitution, the Federalist Papers and other founding documents – the utmost care in making another exception.

While the idea of a military coup in the U.S. might seem absurd today, the Founders were wise to be wary of standing armies and officers corps amassing powers to rival those of the commander in chief. Congress may ultimately decide that Mattis is well worth setting aside the rule. But his confirmation hearings should devote as much attention to his views on military-civilian relations as to what Pentagon reforms he proposes or how he wants to defeat Islamic State.

As President Dwight D. Eisenhower demonstrated – by extricating the U.S. from the Korean War and keeping the Suez Crisis from becoming World War III – military leaders tend to be extremely wary of putting troops’ lives at risk, and that’s a virtue in any defense secretary.

Mattis, in particular, is both a legendary fighter and an erudite soldier-scholar nicknamed “the Warrior Monk.” If confirmed, he might also be a calming influence on Mike Flynn, the irascible former general Trump has chosen to be national security adviser – someone Mattis outranked in the military by a star.

Ideally, Congress’s confirmation hearings on Mattis will become a chance to publicly consider what role the military should play in American society during a time of war against terrorism and rising threats from Russia and China.

When that’s done, Congress may very well find that James Mattis is as deserving as George Marshall of special consideration.

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker make millions off folks who were already hurting. According to Politico, OneWest once foreclosed on a 90-yearold woman over a 27 cent payment error. In addition, Trump has tapped billionaire businessman Wilbur Ross, who also spent years on Wall Street, to be commerce secretary. Instead of draining the swamp, the president-elect has invited the alligators into the executive suite.

In a similar head-spinning move, Trump is considering retired general David Petraeus, former head of the CIA, for secretary of state.

Here’s the irony: Petraeus’ political career ended when he pleaded guilty to mishandling classified materials. Isn’t that the very crime that Trump insisted Clinton, whom he bashed for using a private email server, should be sent to jail for?

Still, if any of this is a surprise, it shouldn’t be. Throughout the campaign – indeed, throughout his career – Trump was a world-class liar.

Somehow, however, that description fails to do justice to Trump’s

talents, his sui generis capacities. It’s tempting to call him a con artist, but good cons are usually out to genuinely fool the mark. While a fraud such as Bernard Madoff was also a worldclass liar, he tried hard to make his deceptions believable.

Trump does no such thing. He flits from one falsehood to another, even as proof of his mendacity is put before him. He doesn’t care; he’s not embarrassed. In Trumpland, there is no truth, just desires and needs; there are no facts, just impulses; there is no reality, just the force of power and will.

“In a world where nothing is true, the only real choice available to voters is between competing fictions,” Ned Resnikoff writes in a brilliant essay for the ThinkProgress website. “Trump offered a particularly compelling set of fictions, but he also found various ways to telegraph that he knew what he was doing. ... If everything is a lie, then the man who makes his lies obvious is practicing a peculiar form of honesty. The president-elect is speaking the language of dictators.”

The Trump phenomenon and its distorted reality will prove costly – not just to the civic fabric, but also to the very working-class voters who put Trump in office. Take a look at

his administration’s plans for Medicare, for example.

During the campaign, Trump sought to distinguish himself from the hated Republican elite with, among other things, a pledge to protect the social safety net, especially programs such as Medicare and Social Security, which make such a difference in the lives of less-affluent Americans. So what did the president-elect do as soon as the votes were counted?

He nominated a health and human services secretary, U.S. Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.), who has made privatizing Medicare a crusade. Price, an orthopedist, is a member of the ultraconservative Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, which was formed in 1943 to fight “socialized medicine.” He plans to offer older Americans subsidies to purchase private insurance – which virtually guarantees they will receive less access to low-cost medical care than they do now.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Everyone needs a happy place

To the Editor: Most of us can remember a happy place (memory) that we can visit in our imagination.

When we are under stress or facing a crisis, if we think of a happy place or time, it may help us get through it.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt was a virile, athletic young man and an excellent dancer before he was stricken with polio. How difficult it must have been for him to adjust to relying on a wheelchair.

He used a ritual while sleepless or under stress, imagining he was a youngster, accelerating his sled down a steep hill in the snow to a wooded bluff below.

Coincidentally, Bob Dole, in his autobiography “One Soldier’s Story,” also used this device. As he lay wounded on the battlefield, awaiting a medic’s attention,

he thought back to his boyhood in Kansas, where he was a track star.

Use your imagination to escape momentarily when you are in an unpleasant situation. During the heat and humidity of summer, picture snow piled up higher than our heads when the snow plows cleared our parking lots and streets.

Sounds simple, but it could help.

Conversely, during the winter’s frigid temperatures, picture construction workers perspiring in the blazing summer sun, or yourself sitting on the patio enjoying a glass of iced tea.

Just imagine yourself at another time or place. Such as when you met and fell in love with your significant other. The joy at discovering that the other person felt the same way about you.

Remember how you wanted to stop strangers on the street and tell them

how happy you were? Happiness is to share, but sorrow we often bear alone.

You may laugh at these simplistic measures, but they actually can help see us through many trials.

If you can’t think of a happy place, go out there and create a happy memory (place) now with Christmas soon upon us. One you can visit in the months ahead when things aren’t going well.

Washington Irving (a 19th century author of the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkler”) said, “It is the divine attribute of the imagination that when the real world is shut out, it can create a world for itself.”

I had a chance to check out my theory recently due to health issues, and it does work. Imagine that!

To the Editor: It’s not likely the fraud-elect, Donald Trump, can survive a four-year term without facing impeachment hearings, what with his propensity to grab at strange women’s crotches.

But if he starts by draining the swamp instead of rearranging the alligators, ships the 11 million illegal aliens back home, shuts down the Pacific shipping lanes, brings back American-made goods to our store shelves and auto showrooms, and does it without violating human rights, maybe we’ll pretend he isn’t the best thing to hit America since the Edsel.

If you’re feeling a little like Alice in Trumpland these days, it’s no wonder. Reality has been turned upside down, grossly distorted, rendered a hall-of-mirrors hallucination. We’re going down the rabbit hole to find the Mad Hair, er, Hatter.

It seems just a couple of months ago (it was, wasn’t it?) that Donald Trump was running on a pledge to “drain the swamp” of pernicious influences – lobbyists, corporate titans, Washington insiders and other influence peddlers. He’d return the White House to the people, the white working-class voters who had come to believe the system was “rigged” against them.

He battered his rival, Hillary Clinton, for her connections to Wall Street. She had given a few pricey speeches to financial firms, including Goldman Sachs, and Trump claimed that proved she was unfit for the presidency. She was “owned by the banks,” he said.

So it’s discombobulating – vertigo-inducing, really – to hear that Trump’s nominee for secretary of the treasury, Steve Mnuchin, comes straight from Wall Street; he was a partner at Goldman Sachs for 17 years. He later co-founded a bank called OneWest that took advantage of the devastating financial crisis to

Music will fill the home beginning with the DeKalb High School Madrigal Singers at 1:30 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus extend an invitation to children of all ages to share their Christmas wish list. Mrs. Claus is bringing many of her craft items with her for the Christmas Gift Shoppe. Elves will help visitors pick out that perfect gift.

will have the opportunity to view and participate in the operational model train display.

The many decorated trees each will have a theme such as “Dreaming of a White Christmas,” “Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole,” “Chirpin Around the Christmas Tree,” “A Star in the East,” “Vintage Christmas,” “Let It Snow,” “Candyland,” “Christmas in the Forest” and “Frozen.” Elsa, from the movie “Frozen” will be at the event and available for photos.

Dec 7. STEM Café to forecast far-flung effects of melting ice DAILY CHRONICLE Earth’s ice is melting, and it isn’t likely to stop anytime soon. At the next STEM Café, “Our Icy Planet: The Future of the Cryosphere in a Warming World,” Northern Illinois University ice expert Ross Powell will draw on more than four decades of field research to explore the dramatic changes already being triggered worldwide as ice dwindles.

The free event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Eduardo’s Mexican Restaurant, 214 E. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb.

“We rely on ice to survive,” Powell said in a news release. “It provides drinking water for humans and livestock. It helps sustain agriculture. As more ice melts, billions of people will be affected. In order to understand this, you first have to understand just how pervasive ice is in the world. There’s ice in the tropics, at the poles, in our deserts.

There’s ice on mountaintops and deep undersea. It’s everywhere, and we absolutely depend on it.”

Powell has built his knowledge of the “cryosphere” – the world of ice – over decades of field research around the world. Early in his

career, he was the first person to use a robotic submarine to investigate glaciers that touch the ocean in Alaska, Chile and Antarctica. His presentation will feature striking photographs from these research trips.

“People have heard about melting glaciers affecting human and animal habitats around the North Pole, or causing rising sea levels around the world,” he said in the release. “But those are certainly not all of the possible effects. A loss of ice in the world could end up altering the way water circulates through our oceans and atmosphere. It will likely change civilization as we know it.”

Food and drink will be available for purchase from Eduardo’s.

The following is an excerpt from an issue of the Chicago Sun-Times in 1989: “Angelo K. Bilder was born in Istanbul, Turkey, to Grecian parents.

His father was a professional carver. Inspired by his father’s artistic carving, young Angelo began drawing at the age of 7. The family came to the United States in 1913 and settled in Dayton, Ohio. Bilder took art classes and later attended the Dayton Art Institute. He then attended Chicago Art Institute and graduated with honors.

Bilder classified his work as realism

and named Gauguin and Picasso as the two artists he admired most. His secret for success, in his own word, is enthusiasm.”

Daughter Dorothea Bilder is an accomplished artist as well. She is professor emeritus from the School of Art at Northern Illinois University. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from Illinois Wesleyan University, and attended the School of Art in Terni, Italy, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Southern Illinois University, receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting, respectively.

In addition to the silent auction, Jill and Fareed Haque and an accompanying bass player will provide live entertainment for the community to enjoy.

RUSHING THROUGH THE SNOW Howard runs for 3 touchdowns to snap 3-game losing streak BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Bears fans, please allow me to solve a dilemma for you.

It is okay to celebrate the Bears’ 26-6 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Soldier Field. In fact, you should.

For those of you who think losing is ever the answer in the NFL – in this case, to get a higher draft pick – that is not the way the game is played, nor is it the way the game ever should be played.

You are never getting better when you’re losing.

Is it really a big deal whether the Bears pick third, fourth or fifth in the draft?

You can just as easily blow a pick or make a great choice at No. 5 as you can at No. 2. The top two candidates for rookie of the year this season are the Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott, who was the fourth overall choice, and Dak Prescott, who famously was a Cowboys fourthround pick.

And believe it or not, No. 3 might very well prove to be the Bears’ fifth-round choice, Jordan Howard.

If this were a draft that offered one or two quarterback prospects worthy of top-five picks, such as 2015 when Jaemis Winston and Marcus Mariota were at the top of every team’s draft board, it might matter, but even in that case, the Bears would be better served by winning what they can – the only way to develop the players they have – and then trading up a few spots to get the quarterback they covet.

I love Carson Wentz, for whom the Eagles traded up to draft at No. 2 last season, while Jared Goff most likely was over-drafted at No. 1.

Let’s say the Bears end up drafting fourth – sadly, I don’t see another likely win on the schedule, and 3-13 seems likely.

With Cleveland, San Francisco and Jacksonville picking ahead of them, there is a real chance Cleveland and the 49ers will take quarterbacks unworthy of their choices, and that would leave legitimate potential franchise-type players such as Jonathan Allen, Myles Garrett and Jabril Peppers there for the taking.

Or, if the Bears see something I don’t

Jordan Howard runs for a first down in the second quarter against the 49ers Sunday at Soldier Field. in one of the QBs, it won’t be overly expensive or difficult to move up and grab one with Cleveland or the Niners, knowing two of those three likely would be there for them.

It also is unnecessary to bemoan the quality of the 49ers team the Bears beat Sunday. That’s who was put in front of them, and the Bears’ youngsters aced a lesson in spanking a team they were supposed to.

More importantly, Howard, Matt Barkley, Cameron Meredith, Cody Whitehair, Leonard Floyd, Akiem Hicks, Nick Kwiatkoski and Bryce Callahan probably became better football players for the experience.

They may not all be significant pieces of the Bears’ future, but most of them

have to be if that future is going to be bright, and developing them is what’s left of this lost mess of a season.

We’ll find out a lot more when they get to Detroit next weekend to take on the first-place Lions, but Barkley made a case Sunday for his potential to be the bridge to the next franchise quarterback and a solid No. 2.

Howard answered a huge question, showing he could take the ball 32 times and dominate the way a franchise back needs to.

Whitehair has established he’s a man, and on multiple plays in the second half he manhandled Glen Dorsey, a player not to be trifled with in 1-on-1 clashes.

Hicks dominated for 60 minutes for the first time as a Bear.

Floyd bounced back from a serious injury to flash more of his unusual athleticism, and his two sacks raised him within half a sack of the team leader, Willie Young, in spite of missing a lot of time with injuries.

Kwiatkoski was putting a hat on people all over the field, and when he sticks you, you stay stuck.

There is no need to search for the negative in the Bears’ win Sunday. It was a good day in a season that has yielded all too few of them.

3 things that worked Third-quarter offense: On their first drive of the second half, the Bears moved the ball 75 yards on 10 plays, converting on three third downs leading to a Howard touchdown. It took only four plays for them to score another TD on the next drive. The Bears outscored the 49ers, 14-0, in the third.

Third-down defense: The 49ers converted only four of their 14 third downs into first downs, and they were 1 for 6 on third down in the second half. Two of the Bears’ five sacks came on third down.

Containing Kaepernick: Coming into Sunday playing at a high level, 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick had an awful afternoon in the elements, completing only 1 of 4 passes. He also was held to 20 rushing yards on six carries (3.3-yard average) one week after rushing for 113 yards against Miami, as the linebackers did a nice job preventing him from getting into the open field. Kaepernick eventually was benched for Blaine Gabbert.

Special teams: It was an ugly day for the third phase. Ben Braunecker was late to get on the field for a punt, forcing a delay of game, and then he got beat for a blocked punt, which led to a 49ers field goal. Deonte Thompson lost a fumble on the ensuing kickoff return.

First-quarter offense: It took some time for the Bears to get rolling, as they had only 26 yards in the first quarter, all on the ground. Matt Barkley was 0 for 2 passing, and the team got one first down in the first quarter.

First-half run defense: Carlos Hyde had an impressive first half with 17 carries for 74 yards, rushing 4.4 yards a carry. The 49ers had seven first downs, all by running the ball, before halftime.

The first completion: It took until 1:43 left in the first half before Bears QB Matt Barkley found Thompson for 8 yards and a first down, his first completed pass of the afternoon. The play sparked an end-of-half drive that resulted in a touchdown to take a 7-6 lead into the locker room.

Using your head: With the Bears up, 14-6, the defense had an opportunity to make a play on thirdand-6, and John Timu’s helmet did the job. Kaepernick went deep for Shaun Draughn, and the pass bounced off TImu’s helmet, forcing a punt. The Bears went up, 21-6, on their next drive.

Floyd’s two points: The exclamation point on the second-biggest victory in the John Fox era came from the Bears’ first-round pick. Back after missing a game with a concussion suffered in New York, Leonard Floyd sacked Gabbert in the end zone for a safety.

What now?

Record: 3-9 What it means: The chances of getting the No. 2 pick in the draft took a hit, but the Bears improved to .500 at home this season.

What’s next: The Bears head to Detroit to take on the NFC North-leading Lions, one of three teams the Bears have defeated this season.

Kaneland jumps out early in victory

sports@daily-chronicle.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland’s strong start became too much for LaSalle-Peru to overcome in a convincing, 78-50, Knights win Saturday night.

Kaneland (5-1, 1-1 Northern Illinois Big 12) and its fast-paced offense was effective early in the game against LaSalle-Peru (4-3, 1-1 NIB 12), and the attack was consistent from start to finish. The Knights’ ability to get to the foul line early in the game helped them gain the lead and set the tone for the rest of the game. They scored six points in the opening minute and took

a 20-9 lead into the second quarter.

“We came out with a lot of energy tonight and really moved the ball on offense,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said Saturday. “Any time you get to the foul line it means you’re being aggressive and for our case, we don’t have a huge team as far as our size. We need to be aggressive, so to get to the line early is a good sign for us, and to get the other team in some foul trouble here and there always helps. Our defense set the tone early, and we were able to run the floor and score points.”

Smith 3rd at invite

ccutter@shawmedia.com DIXON – For Trevor Smith, all the time spent during the regular season serves a purpose for three weeks out of the year.

The postseason is all that matters for the Sycamore boys bowling senior, and he rolled some of his better games of the season at the Oregon Hawks Invitational at Plum Hollow Lanes in Dixon.

Smith’s 1,369 six-game series was good enough for third place and helped the Spartans to the championship with a total pinfall of 6,311.

Smith had a 500 series after the first two games, breaking out with a 257 and following with a 251.

“I’m not looking to peak super early in the season,” Smith said. “I just look at this as preparation for regionals. I’ll take it. I’m happy with it.”

Spartans coach Aaron Williams knew his team could do better than what it did in performances over the past couple of weeks. The Spartans won the championship by 387 pins over runner-up Rockford Christian. Northern Illinois Big 12 rival LaSalle-Peru finished third with 5,798 pins, and saw Nate Stubler win the meet’s championship with a score of 1,482.

“To come out and shoot what we did, it was a good sight to see,” Williams said. “We’ve had good practices the past couple of days and got refocused a little bit.”

Spartans senior Kobey Dodson rolled his team’s second highest game, a 253, in the third game. Anchored by a

239 in the fourth game, junior Austin Verhaege finished in fourth place with a 1,309. Dodson was third among the Spartans with a 1,241.

Smith believes the win is a confidence-booster for his team.

“I know we can throw the ball,” Smith said. “We’re a good team, so once we get that confidence up, it’s everything. Wins like this, stuff like this, is what’s going to carry us forward.”

The Spartan girls took third place in their portion of the event, totaling 5,174 pins behind Dixon (5,196) and victorious host Oregon (5,374). They won the event last year, but this time around the pesky 10-pins seemed tough to knock down, even when the ball was perfectly in the pocket.

“This house is notorious for being tough on 10-pins,” girls coach Andrew Hampton said. “We left our share. The thing we are going to work on this week is shooting our spares. We’re better than this, but they fought all day long.”

Freshman Megan Kolberg led the Spartans with a 1,082 series, hitting her high score (214) in the second game after shooting a paltry 135.

“She had a rough first game,” Hampton said. “She fought hard and she didn’t shoot less than 170 after that.”

Sophomore Heather Carlson had the Spartans’ high game, a 222 in the third, finishing second among her team with a 1,018 series. Alexis Kolberg also cracked the 1,000-mark (1,008).

“We had a pretty bad effort tonight and it’s not what I expected us to have,” LaSalle-Peru coach Hollis Vickery said. “It was just some little things and nothing major, but I have to give Kaneland all the credit and they came to play. Hawks missing Toews, drop 2nd straight

With each passing day, the sense of worry gets stronger about Jonathan Toews.

What was originally supposed to be a day-to-day injury has kept the Blackhawks’ captain out almost two weeks. He’s skated a little bit recently but won’t be on the ice again for the next few days, as his back injury needs more time to heal.

Most concerning, Toews’ injury isn’t improving.

Toews has now missed the Hawks’ past six games with a back injury since playing only 9:15 against the San Jose Sharks on Nov. 23. There had been some hope Toews, who has 12 points in 21 games, would come off injured reserve and return Sunday.

Instead, that comeback will have to wait a bit longer, as Toews skated early Sunday but coach Joel Quenneville said the Hawks would keep him off of the ice for the next few days before reassessing in the middle of the week.

“Well, you certainly miss his presence in all aspects of your team game, his leadership as well, as good as anybody that’s played,” Quenneville said.

Andrew Copp’s score with 4:45 remaining in the game gave the Jets the lead for good and handed the Hawks a loss in their sixth game without Toews.

The Hawks are 3-2-1 with Toews out and have scored just 12 times, losing the last two.

Clearly, the longer Toews is out, the harder it gets.

“I think you see it a lot of times with injuries, where sometimes when you’re missing a guy right away for a couple games it might not really show up in the lineup, and guys are excited to get that chance,” said Patrick Kane, who set up Artemi Panarin’s game-tying goal with 6:54 left in the third. “The longer you go missing a great player, there’s going to be a hole missing. It’s nothing we can control.”

“Guys like myself and other guys are going to have to step up and try to, whether take on a little bit more ownership in leadership or playing the right way and trying to do whatever you can to help this team win.”

Scott Darling, playing in place of the recovering Corey Crawford, made 30 saves and kept the Hawks in Sunday’s game. “(Toews) does everything out there (and) in the room too,” Darling said.

“We definitely miss him, but we’re professionals, and guys are stepping up trying to fill … it’s a massive void, but we’re doing everything we can to fill it.”

Playoff matchups decided

In the end, true chaos never came to college football this season. Four teams that started near the top of the College Football Playoff rankings will play for the national championship.

Alabama will face Washington in one semifinal, and Clemson meets Ohio State in the other. None of them were ranked any lower than sixth since the selection committee started ranking teams in early November.

Even after a wild finish to championship Saturday, selection Sunday went pretty much as expected.

The committee stayed with the same top four it picked going into championship weekend, leaving out No. 5 Penn State even though the Nittany Lions won the Big Ten title game and beat Ohio State earlier in the season.

The Buckeyes (11-1) are the first team to reach the playoff in its three-year history without winning their conference.

The unbeaten Crimson Tide (13-0) is in the playoff for the third straight season and is the top seed for the second time. They will play the fourth-ranked

Huskies (12-1) in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta on Dec. 31. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

Alabama has played Washington four times previously, twice in bowls and not since 1986. Huskies fans were holding up signs at games late in the season, proclaiming “We want Bama.”

“Sometimes you got to be careful what you wish for,” Washington coach Chris Petersen said on ESPN. “I didn’t hold up that sign.”

Nick Saban and Alabama will be trying to win their fifth national championship in eight seasons, and second straight.

Washington’s last national title came in 1991, when the Huskies were No. 1 in the final coaches’ poll.

Petersen, the former Boise State coach in his third season with Washington, has never faced Saban and said he does not know him well.

“I feel like I know him, I see him on TV so much,” Petersen said.

No. 3 Ohio State is making its second playoff appearance, and No. 2 Clemson (12-1) is in for the second consecutive season. The Buckeyes and Tigers will meet Dec. 31 at the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

Tylenol during pregnancy should be taken with care Dear Doctor: Will taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) during pregnancy increase the chances that the child will have ADHD or autism?

Dear Reader: Such concern is understandable. Parents and parents-to-be have been alarmed over the past few years by two Danish studies that raise the specter of greater ADHD and autism risks among children whose mothers took the overthe-counter pain killer acetaminophen during pregnancy. But let’s look at these studies a little more closely.

The largest of these studies showed that, among children whose mothers ever used acetaminophen during pregnancy, 5.7 percent showed symptoms of hyperactivity by age 7. Among children whose mothers never took acetaminophen, 4.3 percent showed symptoms of hyperactivity. Similar mild differences also were noted for emotional problems and overall conduct.

Here’s the important caveat: The two groups of women were very different.

Participants who used acetaminophen were more likely to be smokers, more likely to be obese (BMI greater than 30) and more likely to have had a fever. Just having a fever during pregnancy has been associated with autism, behavioral abnormalities and problems with attention.

As for the autism study, it linked acetaminophen use during pregnancy to an IQ drop of 2 points in 5-year-olds.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley Here, the cause of the acetaminophen use is an especially important factor. In this study, 37 percent of the mothers who used acetaminophen had fever; only 23 percent of those who didn’t use acetaminophen had fever. And again, those who used acetaminophen were more likely to be smokers.

So one has to ask: Why does someone take acetaminophen during pregnancy?

The answer: To reduce a fever. So fever may be the problem, not the acetaminophen. Further, women who smoke and are obese are more likely to be unhealthy during pregnancy, more likely to take acetaminophen for physical problems and more likely to have children who may also be less healthy.

Would I recommend acetaminophen regularly in pregnancy for joint pain and muscle aches? Probably not, although I would take it for a fever and for moderate pain. Otherwise, it’s better to do prenatal yoga, gentle stretching and maintain a good diet.
