Why the hostility over Thanksgiving shopping?

There seems to be hostility toward the new tradition of stores opening the night of Thanksgiving.

On the Daily Chronicle’s Facebook page, where we posted our story about the start of holiday shopping season, and elsewhere on the internet, there seems to be this visceral reaction from some people. It’s as though if you go shopping on that night, you’re somehow deserving of scorn.

The arguments against it seem to be these: • You should be home with your family.

Most of us spend time with our families on Thanksgiving. PLENTY of time. Enough time to talk to everybody in the room, stuff our faces, and then talk about the people who leave first. By that evening, some people are probably thankful they can go shopping and get out of the house.

• You’re keeping workers from their families. Yes, the people managing the chaos would probably rather not be working a night shift on a holiday. But using this logic, you also shouldn’t buy gasoline, run to the drug store for a gallon of milk or read the newspaper on Thanksgiving, either. People are working there, too. Turns out, people are adaptable.

When someone has to work Thanksgiving or Christmas – as I have and my father often did when I was growing up – you work around their schedule. A job, after all, is a good thing to have.

• It’s crass commercialism. As though the hol-

If you’re going to buy gifts for your family and friends, it makes no difference when you buy them. Except that if you buy them on Thanksgiving night, they might be a little cheaper.

So as far as I can tell, that’s all the shopping crush is – people trying to get good deals. For some people, it’s fun. For those trying to make a limited budget stretch as far as possible, it’s critically important.

In reality, isn’t having some stores open on Thanksgiving night better than having them open at 3 a.m. on Friday, or some crazy early time? At least it takes some of the traffic off the roads for people who have to work on Friday.

So shoppers get a bargain, workers get a paycheck, retailers turn a profit, and those of us who don’t want to participate can stay home and watch the late NFL game.

Hard to see what there is to get angry about in any of that.

DALLAS – Texas on Monday reported its first case of Zika virus that likely came from a mosquito bite within the state.

Florida is the only other state in the U.S. with locally spread Zika. Health officials said that the woman who was infected in Texas is a resident of Brownsville, located on the border the state

shares with Mexico.

But health officials said she reported no recent travel to Mexico or any other country with ongoing Zika outbreaks.

Until the Florida cases, all the cases in the U.S. were connected to travel to countries with outbreaks, mostly in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Local nonprofits ready for Giving Tuesday

DeKALB – For nonprofits such as Hope Haven of DeKalb County, Giving Tuesday presents another resource to be able to provide its services when faced with limited funding and statewide budget cuts, Executive Director Leslie Wicks said.

Wicks said the homeless shelter and housing program is participating in Giving Tuesday for the first time this year.

“We have no goal in mind, but anything we receive, we will be really grateful for,” she said. “With all the focus on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, people have to remember that it’s not always about buying things in order to give.”

Hope Haven, with shelters located at 1145 Rushmoore Drive and 965 Dresser Court in DeKalb, is one of several DeKalb County nonprofits that are preparing to receive extra help as part of the annual Giving Tuesday initiative.

Giving Tuesday is a national campaign encouraging the support and awareness of local nonprofits. It was started in 2012 by a cultural center in New York City to kick off the holiday season with a focus on giving.

Hundreds of organizations in Illinois take part each year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

A full list of participating local and national nonprofits can be found at www.givingtuesday.org. Links to donate can be found on the Giving Tuesday website, at www.ilgive. com, or through organizations’ individual websites.

Econ Illinois, a DeKalb-based group focused on bringing economic education to students around the state, is participating for the second year with the goal of raising $5,000.

Rosie Sajak, director of development and corporate relations for Econ Illinois, said the funds go toward the annual operations of exposing students to financial concepts through games, contests and lessons.

For example, the group has brought the “Stock Market Game” to local high schools in which students compete to create online stock market portfolios.

Econ Illinois, located at 444 E. Hillcrest Drive in DeKalb, also has the mission of helping to develop and implement financial literacy standards for education, according to its website.

TAILS Humane Society, an animal shelter located at 2250 Barber Greene Road in DeKalb, has a fundraising goal of $5,000 as well and is reaching out for donations on Giving Tuesday for the third year.

Heather Short, development and marketing manager for TAILS, said the funds go toward treating medi-

cal conditions such as heartworm, mange and parasites for the hundreds of animals that come through the shelter each year and are put up for adoption.

“From our standpoint, it’s a really exciting day to get our message out there and see the community respond,” Short said.

Short said TAILS is looking to repeat its successful campaign from last year that brought in about $5,000.

Lynette Spencer, executive director for Adventure Works, said the nonprofit organization uses Giving Tuesday as an opportunity to kick off its annual fundraising campaign on social media.

Located at 1211 Sycamore Road in DeKalb, Adventure Works provides youth with adventure-based counseling through outdoor activities such as hiking and archery. The program specializes in counseling for youth with behavioral, anxiety and autism disorders.

Spencer said the group was able to increase its fundraising last year by about $12,000 by transitioning from a mailing list to online outreach. The group has an annual goal of $25,000.

“For the past three years we’ve been participating, more and more people are learning about Giving Tuesday as a concept of giving, which also spreads more awareness each year,” she said.

SHAW MEDIA ST. CHARLES – Four Illinois Youth Center-St. Charles guards have been indicted for encouraging juvenile detainees to attack other detainees as a form of discipline, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Johan O. Asiata, Michael M. Klimek, Andre L. McFarland and Elliott J. Short were indicted on multiple counts Nov. 22 by a Kane County grand jury. An arrest warrant for each was issued immediately, the release stated.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon alleges that the guards, led

by Klimek, encouraged certain juvenile residents to physically attack other juvenile residents, facilitated the attacks and stood idly by during the attacks.

The offenses took place in January 2016, and the indictments state that each of the defendants was acting in his official capacity when he engaged in

the alleged acts, which took place at the facility – which is public property, according to the release.

Asiata, 30, of the 26200 block of South Rachel Drive, Channahon, is charged with five counts of official misconduct, two counts of aggravated Johan O. battery and one count of Asiata unlawful restraint. He was taken into custody Wednesday by Illinois State Police and was released from the Kane County Jail Thursday after posting $5,000 bond, the release stated.

Klimek, 40, of the 100 block of Tuma Road, Yorkville, is charged with 53

counts of official misconduct, 18 counts of aggravated battery, three counts of unlawful restraint, one count of mob action and one count of theft. He was taken into Elliot J. custody Nov. 22 by IlShort linois State Police and was released Wednesday from the Kane County Jail after posting $7,500 bond, the release stated.

McFarland, 31, of the 4500 block of Hitching Post Trail, Rockford, Andre L. is charged with eight McFarland counts of official misconduct and one count of aggravated battery. He was taken into custody Nov. 22 by Illinois State Police and was released Saturday from the Kane County Jail after posting $3,000 bond.

Short, 34, of the 1900 block of Oak Street, St. Charles, is charged with four

counts of official misconduct and two counts of aggravated battery. He was taken into custody Nov. 22 by Illinois State Police and was released Wednesday from the Kane County Jail after posting $5,000 bond, the release stated.

The charges allege 10 victims – for incidents alleged to have taken place Jan. 9 to 13 and Jan. 28, the release stated, noting that the allegations were reported to the Illinois Department of Corrections in late January. The Illinois State Police handled the investigation, and the defendants were placed on administrative leave.

If convicted of the most serious offense, each of the defendants faces a sentence of probation – or two to five years in prison, the release stated.

McFarland is set to appear in court at 9 a.m. Wednesday; Klimek at 9 a.m.

Dec. 5; Short at 9 a.m. Dec. 7; and Asiata at 9 a.m. Dec. 8. All will appear in Room 217 of the Kane County Judicial Center.

Man held on $50,000 bond after stabbing in DeKalb

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A DeKalb man charged with stabbing another man at least twice during a fight remained in jail Monday on $50,000 bond.

Corey M. Gardner, 30, of the 1100 block of Rushmoore Drive, DeKalb, was charged Sunday with aggravated battery with use of a deadly weapon and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, according to court documents.

If convicted of either charge, he could be sentenced to 2 to 5 years in prison.

DeKalb police were called to Hope Haven, at 1145 Rushmoore, about Corey M. 7:10 p.m. Friday for a Gardner report of a fight. Police found the victim with a 4-inch stab wound on his chest, according to a police synopsis contained in court documents.

Gardner told police that he pulled out a pocket knife during fight, but said that the victim ran into his knife blade.

Gardner also told police that he engaged in a fight with the other man with the intention of stabbing him and that he stabbed him once in the back, according to reports.

The victim was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital, where he was treated for two puncture stab wounds, a cut to his chest and a cut to his abdomen. The wounds were caused by Gardner’s knife, accord-

ing to police reports.

The man who was stabbed sent several photos of his injuries to the Daily Chronicle via the newspaper’s Facebook page on Monday. He declined to comment on the nature of the altercation, but said the two had had problems before Friday.

Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert ordered Monday that Gardner’s bond remain as it had previously been set – $50,000.

Gardner is next due in court Dec. 16 for a preliminary hearing.

DeKalb police to continue Camp Power youth program

DeKALB – The DeKalb Police Department is looking for ways to expand its Camp Power and Power Up youth mentoring programs as students and community members continue to report positive outcomes, DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery said.

Lowery gave the DeKalb City Council an update Monday of the programs in which DeKalb police collaborate with partners such as the Kishwaukee Health System and Northern Illinois University to provide a 10-week summer camp to children from low-income neighborhoods in DeKalb.

Charlotte Marie Clark, of Rochelle, passed away on November 26th, 2016, surrounded by her loving sons, after a brief illness.

Charlotte Marie Needham was born in Dekalb, Illinois on April 29th, 1934, to Fred B. and Blanche (Larson) Needham of Maple Park.

She was greeted at home by her siblings Martha, Bill, Alice, Donald and, soon after followed Linda. She attended Maple Park High School (class of ’52) and worked at the towns Dairy Bar. She was extremely proud of her dad, the town blacksmith, and her mother, who was adored by all.

Charlotte met Eugene “Gene” Clark at a roller rink in Dekalb. They were married in 1959. The initiative was continued in 2015 with grade school children attending Camp Power and middle school children attending Power Up. Lowery said the programs expanded in the summer of 2016 with another two-week camp for youth from the Pleasant Street neighborhood.

“In 2016, there were over 100 children involved and 200 volunteers during a 10-week period,” Lowery said.

“Those kids got free academic tutoring, a free meal, a free snack in the afternoon and a host of experiences that

they would probably never have gotten to do or see in any other forum.”

He said students were able to learn and grow from the mentorship offered by police as well as NIU student mentors.

“In 2016, there continued to be a decrease in calls for service for the police,” Lowery said. “100 percent of kids that participated in the program reported feeling safe, which I would submit to you is a significant accomplishment in a very challenging neighborhood.”

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb woman being held on $30,000 bond in connection with a drug deal that turned into a robbery at gunpoint will be in court today asking a judge to reduce her bond.

Amanda J. Brown, 37, of the 1100 block of Market Street, DeKalb, has been jailed since her arrest Nov. 16.

She faces a charge of armed robbery with a firearm. If convicted, she could be sentenced to six to 30 years in prison.

She has failed to post $3,000 bail to gain her release.

Brown was arrested a few days af-

ter a reported armed robbery that occurred at a home in the 800 block of Market Street in DeKalb. Police were called to a home there at 6:57 p.m. Nov. 13 by a man who reported he had been robbed at gunpoint. The victim said he only knew the robber as “Black.”

He told police that Brown brought Black over to the apartment to see his girlfriend, according to court records.

Brown told DeKalb police detectives that she had used her phone to set up a drug deal for Black to buy crack cocaine from the victim.

She told detectives she didn’t know the robbery suspect, and denied setting up the robbery. Brown said her phone couldn’t be used to verify her story because the victim destroyed it after the robbery, according to the report.

DeKalb police couldn’t immediately be reached Monday afternoon for further details about the case, including whether anyone else had been arrested.

DECATUR – After making two dozen bombing runs to Austria, Germany and Italy, 21-year-old Bruce Leonard felt pretty comfortable in the cockpit of a B-17 Flying Fortress.

Then, after the bombardier dropped the payload Feb. 21, 1944, on a synthetic oil refinery in Vienna, anti-aircraft fire knocked out Leonard’s two port engines.

The pilot’s first task was to push the remaining engines to the breaking point to get over the Southern Alps. The next was to land at an emergency air strip in Yugoslavia, something he’d never done before.

“This was just a field cleared of trees and only about 1,500 feet long. We couldn’t land with wheels up, it was too rough,” Leonard said. “The plane would have flipped over.”

Accomplishing this with no injuries to the 10-man crew, he and the others began a 72-hour odyssey of eluding Nazi patrols to reach the coast and rescue.

Up to now, Leonard, 93, preferred to fly under the radar about his World War II experiences, but in the aftermath of receiving a 2016 James Millikin Award, he was persuaded to also accept some of the spotlight for Veterans Day. It seems fitting, even though Leonard

Report: Illinois authorities take millions in asset seizures

CHICAGO – A new study shows that Illinois law enforcement confiscated more than $319 million in cash and property from individuals over the past 10 years, using a system that doesn’t require convictions to validate the forfeitures.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois and the Illinois Policy Institute recently released a report in which researchers explain financial incentives for police departments and local prosecutors to seize personal property from the public, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The study found that law enforcement agencies in Illinois receive about $30 million in forfeited property each year.

“Asset forfeiture in Illinois has become policing for profit,” said Ben Ruddell,

Davis urges investment in poor areas after grandson’s death

CHICAGO – U.S. Rep. Danny Davis of Chicago is pushing for an anti-poverty plan that he says would reduce gun violence in poor communities such as the one where his 15-year-old grandson was fatally shot last week.

On Monday, the Democratic congressman spoke at Chicago City Hall, surrounded by African-American lawmakers and activists. He said poverty can drive violent crime and that if more money was invested in poor communities it would reduce the gun violence that has plagued some of the most violent neighborhoods in Chicago.

Peoria transit workers vote 104-0 to authorize strike

PEORIA – Transit workers in the Peoria area have voted to authorize a strike, but their officials with their union say they’re hoping to avoid a walkout.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports Amalgamated Transit Union Workers Local 416 members voted 104-0 Sunday for strike authorization. Union president Ron Cox says the union is negotiating with CityLink over health care and contract length. The current contract with about 140 workers expires at midnight Wednesday.

CityLink is the Greater Peoria Mass Transit District. It serves Peoria, Peoria Heights and West Peoria. It also has contracts with Pekin and East Peoria.

CityLink general manager Al Stanek declined to discuss details of contract negotiations but said Sunday that “we are very close to an agreement.” He says CityLink hopes to speak with union

Officials announce $75M for Chicago train extension

CHICAGO – Chicago Transit Authority officials have approved a capital plan that includes $75 million in funding for an extension of a major train line.

It’s the next step in the $2.3 billion expansion of the Red Line. City officials want to expand the line that includes stops in Chinatown and the home of the White Sox from 95th Street to 130th Street, including four new rail stations.

The $75 million investment means the city can move forward with initial engineering and analysis needed to apply for $1 billion in federal funds. City officials say the money will be funded by CTA bonds.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the plans Sunday.

The city is seeking public input on plans until Wednesday. Construction on the 5.3-mile extension isn’t expected to begin until 2022.

BISMARCK, N.D. – Authorities said no action will be taken to enforce North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple’s emergency evacuation order for protesters of the Dakota Access oil pipeline.

Dalrymple signed the order Monday for protesters who are camping on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers land. Dalrymple cited “harsh winter conditions,” and his order said the unpermitted camp sites are not zoned for suitable housing.

Emergency Services spokeswoman Cecily Fong told The Associated Press that authorities will not be using law enforcement or the National Guard to enforce the governor’s order.

Earlier, the corps ordered the protesters to leave federal law but said it has no plans to forcibly remove anyone.

Terrorism is suspected in attack at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A Somali-born Ohio State University student plowed his car into a group of pedestrians on campus and then got out and began stabbing people with a butcher knife Monday before he was shot to death by a police officer. Police said they were investigating whether it was a terrorist attack.

Eleven people were hurt, one critically.

The attacker was identified as Abdul Razak Ali Artan. He was born in Somalia and was a legal permanent U.S. resident, according to a U.S. official who wasn’t authorized to discuss the case and spoke on the condition of anonymity. The FBI joined the investigation.

The details emerged after a morning of conflicting reports and confusion, created in part by a series of tweets from the university warning there was an “active shooter” on campus and students should “Run Hide Fight.” The warning was prompted by what turned out to be police gunfire.

Police vehicles and ambulances converged on the 60,000-student campus, and authorities blocked off roads. Students barricaded themselves inside offices and classrooms, piling chairs and desks in front of doors, before getting the all-clear an hour and a half later.

Ohio State University police Chief Craig Stone said the assailant deliberately drove his small Honda over a curb outside an engineering classroom building and then began knifing people.

A campus officer nearby because of a gas leak arrived on the scene and shot the driver in less than a minute, Stone said.

Angshuman Kapil, a graduate student, was outside Watts Hall when the car barreled onto the sidewalk.

“It just hit everybody who was in front,” he said. “After that everybody was shouting, ‘Run! Run! Run!’ ” Student Martin Schneider said he heard the car’s engine revving.

“I thought it was an accident initially until I saw the guy come out with a knife,” Schneider said, adding that the man didn’t say anything when he got out.

Most of the injured were hurt by the car, and at least two were stabbed. One had a fractured skull.

Columbus police Chief Kim Jacobs, asked whether authorities were considering the possibility it was a terrorist act, said: “I think we have to consider that it is.”

Republican Vice President-elect Mike Pence called the episode “a tragic attack” and said “our prayers are with them all.”

U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said the bloodshed “bears all of the hallmarks of a terror attack carried out by someone who may have been self-radicalized.”

“Here in the United States, our most immediate threat still comes from lone attackers that are not only capable of unleashing great harm but are also extremely difficult, and in some cases, virtually impossible to identify or interdict,” he said.

Ohio State’s student newspaper, The Lantern, ran an interview in August with a student named Abdul Razak Artan, who identified himself as a Muslim and a third-year logistics management student who’d transferred from Columbus State in the fall.

Three people close to the transition team said Trump had been aware that Conway planned to voice her opinion, both on Twitter and in TV interviews.

Conway served as Trump’s third campaign manager and largely succeeded in navigating the minefield of rivalries that ensnared other officials.

NEW YORK – The drama, disputes and falsehoods that permeated Donald Trump’s presidential campaign are now roiling his transition to the White House, forcing aides to defend his baseless assertions of illegal voting and sending internal fights spilling into public.

On Monday, a recount effort, led by Green Party candidate Jill Stein and joined by Hillary Clinton’s campaign also marched on in three states, based partly on the Stein campaign’s unsubstantiated assertion that cyberhacking could have interfered with electronic voting machines.

Wisconsin officials approved plans to begin a recount as early as Thursday.

Stein also asked for a recount in Pennsylvania and was expected to do the same in Michigan, where officials certified Trump’s victory Monday.

Trump has angrily denounced the recounts and now claims without evidence that he, not Clinton, would have won the popular vote if it hadn’t been for “millions of people who voted illegally.”

On Twitter, he singled out Virginia, California and New Hampshire. In another series of tweets Monday, he lashed out at a CNN reporter who had called Trump’s

regularities conducted before the 2016 election.

Trump met Monday with candidates for top Cabinet posts, including retired Gen. David Petraeus, a new contender for secretary of state. Trump is to meet Tuesday with Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, who is also being considered more seriously for the diplomatic post, and Mitt Romney, who has become a symbol of the internal divisions agitating the transition team.

Petraeus said he spent about an hour with Trump, and he praised the president-elect for showing a “great grasp of a variety of the challenges that are out there.”

“Very good conversation and we’ll see where it goes from here,” he said.

A former CIA chief, Petraeus pleaded guilty last year to a misdemeanor charge of mishandling classified information relating to documents he had provided to his biographer, with whom he was having an affair.

Trump is expected Tuesday to name Georgia Rep. Tom Price to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, said a person familiar with the decision, who insisted on anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the nomination publicly ahead of the announcement.

The Associated Press NEW YORK – There are already a few online services that aim to replace cable, but they haven’t attracted many users yet. AT&T’s DirecTV hopes to change that with a new service announced Monday.

While just about any person you meet on the street will tell you cable costs too much, the vast majority of Americans don’t think it’s bad enough to cancel. Cheaper online live-TV services, like Dish Network’s Sling TV and Sony’s PlayStation Vue, remain relatively unknown compared with Netflix, Hulu and Amazon. And while they’re easy to order and cancel online and fairly simple to use, they still have drawbacks.

“No one has really delivered the right combination of content, price and ease that will get people to make that call to their current provider and say sayonara,” said Forrester analyst Jim Nail.

It’s unclear if AT&T’s new service, dubbed DirecTV Now, will break out with consumers, especially with another live-TV operation from Hulu coming early next year.

And maybe one from Google. Or, who knows, maybe even Apple, too.

The service, which will be available on Wednesday, will initially offer more than 100 channels for a teaser price of $35 a month. But that’s just a limited-time offer, and the price for that bundle will nearly double once the deal expires. (Existing customers will be grandfathered in.) AT&T didn’t say when that will happen.

WHO WANTS TO WATCH?

If an online cable service could figure out how to get customers to pay up, it could attract millions of people.

Americans are increasingly dissatisfied with how much they pay for what’s on TV. The number of customers paying cable and satellite operators for TV has dropped nearly 3 million, to roughly 97 million, in the past two years, according to industry experts MoffettNathanson Research.

And plenty of people never signed up for a $100 TV bundle to begin with. Research firm SNL Kagan estimates that about 14.4 million households pay for internet but not TV. AT&T sees the potential market for DirecTV Now as 20 million homes.

But analysts estimate that Sling has racked up fewer than 1 million subscribers since it launched in February 2015. Vue’s numbers are harder to get a handle on, but it’s not on the list of top 10 most popular online video services compiled by research firm Parks Associates. Neither service reports subscriber numbers.

Of course, it’s hard to attract attention when there are also dozens of other video apps. You can sign up for specific sports, or comedy, or anime, or a single channel, like HBO or CBS. Netflix, the country’s most popular paid video service, has 47.5 million customers in the U.S.

THE PROBLEMS WITH INTERNET TV

New services don’t have all the channels people want.

There’s been no perfect solution that lets you pick only your favorite channels for a reasonable price, a vision of TV nirvana known as “a la carte” that has failed to materialize because it undermines the business models of entertainment conglomerates. Only people in some markets can

That’s OK if you can wait to watch the next episode of a TV series, but sports fans typically want to watch games live.

And even though so-called cord-cutters are on a quest for cheaper video, virtual cable may end costing just as much, depending on how many sports channels or other extras you want and how much your internet costs when it’s disconnected from its cable-bundle discount. Bundles from Sling and Vue range from $20 to $65 a month. You can pay to add more channels.

These services are easy to sign up for and cancel – but connecting them to a TV often requires an extra step or a new gadget, like an Apple TV. On the plus side, while they’ve experienced some technical issues during major events, service quality appears to have improved.

And they sometimes lack some of the best features of both traditional TV, such as endless channel options and DVR recording (which Vue offers now, while Sling is only launching next month), and subscription TV services like Amazon and Netflix (no blackouts, no restrictions based on location if you’re in your home country).

ENTER DIRECTV

DirecTV Now will have some of those same problems.

It is launching without CBS, which airs hits like “NCIS,” “The Big Bang Theory” and NFL football games. CBS also has its own streaming service it wants you to pay for.

And ABC, NBC and Fox will only be available live in a handful of cities – those in which the national broadcasters own its local TV affiliate. So lots of sports will be unavailable for many subscribers.

The service won’t immediately offer an online DVR that lets you store programs online for later viewing, although AT&T says that will be coming next year. You can only run it on two screens at a time, which may not work for large families.

Even so, the $35 bundle is cheaper than the typical cable bundle and provides more channels than online cable competitors offer at similar prices.

But the $60 standard price that kicks in down the road is much less of a deal. AT&T also will offer a smaller package of about 60 channels for $35. There also will be $50 and $70 bundles.

The American Bankers Association Foundation has recognized Resource Bank N.A. for its noteworthy corporate social responsibility with an Honorable Mention in the 2016 Community Commitment Awards.

The awards were given to banks for their efforts in categories ranging from affordable housing to community and economic development.

The selection committee, made up of national experts in each category, chose winners based on the creativity and thoughtfulness of the bank program. Each program must embody the ideals of corporate social responsibility and demonstrate success in measurable terms.

Tourism marketing is visual. Photos and video are staples that destination marketing organizations must include in a successful marketing campaign.

The new website is flush with photos, it’s easier to navigate and mirrors our marketing campaign. Website views are up 60 percent over the same period as last year. Three new videos that highlight attractions and events are in the works. They will be posted on the website and YouTube channel soon.

Finally, the DCCVB quarterly leisure event newsletter went out to more than 6,000 subscribers. The DCCVB calendar of events is the No. 1 area that visitors view online. The other top pages are the home page, interactive map, shopping landing page and downloadable brochures. Check out the new site at: dekalbcountycvb.com.

As you can see, we’re very busy promoting DeKalb County to generate economic impact from tourism spending. Our ongoing efforts are reflected in the dollars spent by visitors, which have been up the past seven years in a row. In 2015, dollars spent reported in at $91.3 million.

We wouldn’t be able to grow the visitor dollar amounts that go back to the region without local partner stakeholders and the Illinois Office of Tourism Local Tourism Certified Bureau Matching Grant. Investing in tourism marketing is vital to a healthy economy locally, statewide and nationally.

We’ve been busy working with event planners for the Mid-American Conference Volleyball Championships that were hosted at Northern Illinois University, Nov. 16 to 22.

Seven visiting teams came to compete for the MAC Volleyball Championship. More than 400 hotel room nights were booked for this event. A source at NIU reported that 2,100 visitors were here for the tournament. We are happy to share that Coach Ray Gooden and the Huskies won the title. The team advances to the NCAA National Championships. Congratulations and best of luck at the next level! Go Huskies!

Some of the other larger events that will be hosted in the area in 2017 will bring millions of dollars and thousands of visitors to DeKalb County.

The NIU Convocation Center will host the Farm Show, IESA state wrestling championships, Cheer Group Competitions, Supersectional basketball, the MS Bike Ride, STEAM Fests and a Thomas Rhett concert, to name a few. Rich Harvest Farms Golf Course (NIU golf team’s home course thanks to alum and owner Jerry Rich) will be home to the NCAA Women’s and Men’s Golf Championships for the first time in history from May 19-31. More than 60 teams will compete, bringing their families and fan base with them. These events drive the economic engine for local businesses and provide key visibility for the region.

Help workers earn a living

If all had gone according to the Obama administration’s plans, 4.2 million middle-income workers would have gotten an early Christmas gift. Under a Labor Department regulation issued in May, they were scheduled to become eligible for overtime pay for hours worked beyond 40 per week, starting Dec. 1. Over the next decade, the total pay boost would have amounted to $12 billion. Wal-Mart already has increased salaries for assistant managers by up to $3,500 a year in anticipation of the new rule.

But it almost certainly will not go into effect next month, because of a Nov. 22 ruling by Judge Amos Mazzant of a federal district court in Texas. The Federal Labor Standards Act, the ultimate source of authority for the national time-and-a-half standard, exempts “executive, administrative and professional employees” who earn a salary.

The definition of such personnel has been a source of contention since the law passed in 1938, although Congress intended both actual job duties and level of pay to be considered. The Obama Labor Department would have expanded overtime coverage by granting eligibility to people making up to $47,476 a year, more than double the current threshhold. This went far beyond Congress’ intent, Judge Mazzant reasoned, by creating “a de facto salary-only test.”

Judge Mazzant’s opinion could be interpreted to mean no salary criteria could be consistent with the statute – an extreme position, given the existing standard was adopted under the Republican George W. Bush administration, although the judge in a footnote insisted his argument applied only to the Obama rule. Although Republicans have been gunning for the Obama administration rule, not all are oblivious to the legitimate concerns it sought to address. Earlier this year, five GOP senators, led by Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, proposed phasing in the Labor Department’s higher salary threshhold over four years with a possible opt-out for nonprofits and state governments.

Our concern is lawmakers probably won’t go far enough. The overtime rule tries to set a floor below which market forces cannot drive pay – to correct for the generally stronger bargaining position of employers. Given this advantage is an essentially permanent fact of capitalist life, basic labor standards should be stable over the long term, so they aren’t constantly being renegotiated by politicians, relitigated by judges or relobbied by interest groups.

Any overtime rule Congress imposes should include mandatory periodic adjustments to account for new conditions, and specify criteria, including inflation and changes in the nature of work, thus keeping future surprises, for both workers and employers, to a minimum.

In trade wars, everyone loses The presidential campaign is over, and hopefully the flirtation with trade protectionism has ended as well. The new Trump administration will not be able to deliver on its promise of a reinvigorated economy if it also sticks to its pledge to curtail trade.

That was the message Ford Motor Co. CEO Mark Fields delivered at the Los Angeles Auto Show last week.

Ford Motor was a favorite whipping boy of Donald Trump on the campaign trail. As a candidate, Trump blistered the automaker for moving car production to Mexico. Specifically, he targeted Ford for shifting assembly of the Ford Focus and C-Max hybrid models to that country.

But as Fields said then, the reality of labor contracts with the United Auto Workers union and federal emissions and fuel economy rules make profitably producing small cars in this country nearly impossible.

Fields pointed out the Wayne plant whose production is moving south of the border soon will be transitioned to building the new Ford Ranger and Bronco. Both are

expected to be red-hot models that could add more jobs to the facility.

What particularly is worrisome to Fields, and should be to everyone else, is Trump’s campaign pledge to add a 35 percent tariff on cars and trucks built in Mexico and imported to the United States.

That would seem to be in direct violation of the North America Free Trade Agreement and the rules of the World Trade Organization. And it also would be terrible economic policy.

“A tariff like that would be imposed on the entire auto sector, and that could have a huge impact on the U.S. economy,” Fields said.

It surely would ignite a trade war, with Mexico slapping tariffs on auto parts imported from United States manufacturers.

Automotive is the largest manufacturing export sector in the U.S., amounting to $54 billion in 2014, according to the Department of Commerce.

Mexico is the third-largest export market in terms of value for light vehicles assembled in the United States.

In other words, trade is not a one-way street. American work-

ers are benefiting from free trade with Mexico, just as are Mexican workers.

Ford’s hands are not entirely clean on the issue of free trade.

The Dearborn-based automaker opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which would bring together the United States and 11 Pacific Rim countries in a trade consortium.

Fields complains the TPP does not do enough to curtail currency manipulation by some Asian countries. In that view, he is in sync with the president-elect.

Trump also has suggested a 45 percent tariff on goods imported from China, which rapidly is becoming America’s most important trading partner. That, too, would have disastrous impact on U.S. workers and economic growth.

And it would drive up prices for a wide range of consumer goods.

America always loses when it engages in trade wars. Trump and his team should focus on growing the economy through smarter tax and regulatory policies, rather than throwing up trade barriers.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Kish College partnerships help to prepare youth

To the Editor: Recent reports show that almost 90 percent of millennials who graduate from high school attend college within eight years.

The college experience has become the norm for younger Americans, and Kishwaukee College is proud of its partnerships with area high schools to help students be college ready.

This fall, 515 students from area high schools are enrolled in the dual credit program, with students taking college classes in high school and earning both

high school and Kish College credit.

Dual credit is an excellent opportunity for high school students to earn college credit at a significantly reduced cost, experience the rigor of college coursework, and explore college majors and career opportunities.

As the cost burden of higher education continues to shift to students because of less state funding, it becomes even more important that we partner with our area high schools to help young people explore programs, majors and career opportunities before entering college.

Many students begin college not quite sure what they want their major or future career to be. Students without a declared major drop out of college at a higher rate, struggling with the time and money commitments of college and not having a clear direction.

A significant problem for students leaving college without a degree is student debt. Recent sources cite that student loan debt in this country is now over $1.3 trillion. In 2012, approximately 60 per-

cent of college students took out loans, and those who most often default on student loans are those who leave college without a degree. A small number of college graduates default on their loans, but many more default if they attended college and did not graduate.

Kishwaukee College is working to help students discover their passion and the educational program or major that will help them meet their career aspirations by strengthening our high school partnerships and college counseling services, In the end, we all seek the same outcome for our students – to be successful and financially healthy members of our local workforce and communities.

Will Trump do for infrastructure what he did for ice rink?

In May 1986, a 39-year-old Manhattan real estate developer named Donald Trump promised to get Wollman Rink in Central Park up and running – something the city government, despite spending $13 million, had failed to do for six years. Trump delivered, ahead of time and under a $3 million budget.

The 70-year-old president-elect surely remembers that. His proposal for massive infrastructure spending holds out the opportunity to transform government spending programs much as he transformed the process of building an ice skating rink in the beautiful infrastructure Frederick W. Olmsted designed in the time of the Civil War. Federal transportation infrastructure programs, designed in the post-World War II years, have run out of gas. Gas tax receipts have been flagging because of decreases in driving and increased gas mileage requirements. Projects are doled out by congressional committee members, and environmental procedures hold up completion for years. As President Barack Obama said after his 2009 stimulus didn’t do much stimulating, “there’s no such thing as shovel-ready projects.”

Common Good’s Philip K. Howard points out that government agencies set out in 2008 to raise the Bayonne Bridge, which connects Staten Island and New Jersey, to permit new super-container ships coming through the widened Panama Canal to enter

Despite millions spent on plans and environmental approvals, the bridge hasn’t been raised yet.

This is just one of many examples of how, as Howard writes, “decade-long review and permitting procedures more than double the effective cost of new infrastructure projects.”

Congress, at the prodding of the Trump administration, could change that.

Republicans may be wary of spending as much as Trump wants, and Democrats may be wary about changing some of the rules. But the author of “The Art of the Deal” could point out that Congress can change those rules.

It could repeal the requirements for environmental impact statements or require that they be completed within a given time – six months? – with the default assumption that the project would go ahead otherwise. Congress could cut off endless appeals to the courts. That would put out of business groups that exist solely to mess things up.

Congress could overrule – pre-empt is the legal word – the BANANA (build absolutely nothing anywhere near

anything) regulations of states such as California. If California complained, it might forfeit federal money.

Counsel might be taken from Howard, who wrote: “Dumpsters can be filled with obsolete laws. Inflexible dictates can be replaced by open frameworks that permit officials to act sensibly. ... Give a federal agency the job of deciding when there’s been sufficient review.”

With low interest rates, government could right now borrow cheaply for infrastructure. It still would have to pay off the debt, but not all of it if Congress encouraged infrastructure public-private partnerships. Canada employs them extensively and is using one to finance the new bridge across the Detroit River. Having private money at risk also would increase the chance that infrastructure would be built where it is needed, not just in some senior committee member’s district.

Another thing that makes infrastructure in the U.S. so much more expensive than in Canada, Australia and Europe is the Davis-Bacon Act, passed originally to exclude blacks from construction work and now employed to favor labor unions. Davis-Bacon requires government bureaucrats to calculate the “prevailing wage” in each of the 3,141 counties involved – a lengthy and money-wasting process.

A gifted dealmaker might tell the unions that they can keep Davis-Bacon in, say, 50 counties – which is where

most of their members are concentrated – but that it will go away for the rest of the country.

Another thing Congress might want to consider is that good infrastructure requires not just construction but maintenance. Large hunks of Washington’s Metro subway are out of service these days because, as fatal accidents have shown, the system has been stinting on maintenance for 40 years.

Maintenance and repair jobs in the long run will outnumber construction jobs, and they also tend to be more permanent. And maintenance will inevitably be concentrated on infrastructure that is actually useful and used.

A big infrastructure package could also include revision of civil service rules, something Trump called for in his 100-days video. And it could encourage the privatizing of the air-traffic control system – something Canada has done – which has been held up for more than a decade.

The beginning of an administration offers an opportunity to make sharp changes to processes previously considered unchangeable. Will the 45th president do for infrastructure what he did for Wollman Rink?

To the Editor: In response to your editorial, “Shining a spotlight on Thanksgiving” (Nov. 21, page 13) I say you’re right on! And to take it a step further, I say the stores are ruining the holidays.

Change and progress are good things, but sometimes “old school” is better.

Old school means keeping the holidays separate.

When I was growing up, Santa didn’t hit the stores until after Thanksgiving.

Now he’s on the same shelves as the pumpkins! What are our children supposed to think?

When you see Christmas items on display during the Halloween season, somehow you take away some of the warmth and wonder of it all. Thanksgiving gets lost in the shuffle because the stores are worried about the almighty buck.

Why can’t we get through one holiday before we start thinking about the next?

Thanksgiving is a celebration of our country’s beginning, let’s give ourselves time to enjoy it and quit worrying about what’s next on the agenda. We can’t make the holidays special for the kids if they all run together.

SHABBONA – A dominant second half propelled the Hinckley-Big Rock girls basketball team to its first win over Indian Creek in almost three years.

The Royals knocked off the Timberwolves, 35-24, on Monday to earn their first win over their cross-county rivals since the third-place game of the Little 10 Conference Tournament in 2014.

“It feels really good,” senior Emily Southern said of beating the Timberwolves for the first time in her varsity career. “Our whole team is really excited. We finally decided we wanted to take the step to go and beat this team.

I think that we will play well throughout the rest of the season. It’s a good start.”

The Royals (2-4, 1-0 Little 10) took their first lead of the game on a steal and layup from Tori Prellberg with 3:32 left in the third quarter. After forcing the 25th of 32 turnovers by Indian Creek (1-5, 0-1), Southern drained a 3-pointer to push the lead to 23-18. It never shrank below four the rest of the way.

“She’s a spark plug. At any point, she can put up 10, 12 points in a quarter,” Royals coach Doug Brewington said. “She can catch lightning in a bottle for sure, and tonight that was evident. And all the girls on the team, they feed on it. When she’s playing well and our energy is high, everybody else follows suit and we play our best ball.”

Indian Creek struggled from the floor, shooting 9 for 49, including 2 for 26 on 3-pointers. The Timberwolves also shot 4 for 13 from the free-throw line.

Down 25-21 early in the fourth quarter, Marisa VanWyhe missed the front end of a 1-and-1, then Southern hit a jumper with 5:32 left to push the lead to six. The Timberwolves scored two straight on consecutive 1-for-2 trips to the line to get back to within four, but the Royals made their free throws the rest of the way.

“As we struggled shooting, we let it affect our whole overall game,” Indian Creek coach Paul Muchmore said.

“Free throws really hurt us late. We were down (four) and missed a couple 1-and-1s. Those are the things we talk about we got to do.”

For the Timberwolves, Olivia Turner scored eight points to lead Indian Creek. Muchmore said he liked the shot selection of the Timberwolves, but the team – mostly rebuilt from the squad that took third in state last year – still is working out a lot of kinks in

all aspects of the game.

“We had a lot of open 3s when they were in that 1-2-2,” Muchmore said.

“We struggled a little bit, but we got some girls playing new positions, so that’s to be expected. I thought we had a lot of nice open 3s. ... We’re struggling offensively, that’s for sure.”

Turner also had a game-high 11 rebounds, with teammate Morgan Johnson adding 10. Sarah Diehl had nine rebounds and seven steals for Indian Creek.

Indian Creek led by seven in the second quarter and took a 16-11 lead into halftime after a 3-pointer by Turner. IC had a 25-16 rebounding edge at halftime, but the Royals outrebounded them 29-23 in the second half. After 13 first-half turnovers, Hinckley-Big Rock turned the ball over eight times in the second half.

“It was a trying game,” Brewington said. “In the first half, they stopped us in all facets. We stalled on offense and on defense they got us out of position.”

Trevathan goes on IR with knee injury

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears are placing their 15th player of the season on injured reserve, and it’s another starter and leader.

Inside linebacker Danny Trevathan ruptured the patellar tendon in his right knee late in Sunday’s loss to the Titans, coach John Fox confirmed Monday at Halas Hall.

“He’s obviously a very talented player, one that we targeted and went after,” Fox said. “... It was a semi-contact injury, kind of behind the ball, he planted wrong and the injury occurred. He’ll fight back, he’s been through it before.

(He) had a similar injury a couple years ago that he worked through, and he’ll do the same off of this one.”

Trevathan, despite missing two games with the thumb injury, was second on the team with 66 tackles. He also had four passes defensed and one sack.

John Timu likely will start in his spot next to Nick Kwiatkoski, who is starting for the suspended Jerrell Freeman.

Recapping the drops: Fox attributed the high number of drops from Bears pass catchers in Sunday’s loss to the Titans, including two in the end zone on the final drive, to a lack of game experience.

But hey, you’ve got to put it past you because we need you next week. The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA – Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes to Davante Adams, and the Green Bay Packers beat the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-13, Monday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

Rodgers had 313 yards passing and Adams had 113 yards receiving to help send Philadelphia (5-6) to its first home loss this season.

The Packers (5-6) kept their sinking playoff hopes alive, but they’re still two games behind the Lions (7-4) in the NFC North.

Carson Wentz had 254 yards passing, ran for a score and threw an interception. The last-place Eagles are 2-6 since a 3-0 start.

Rodgers came out firing and led the Packers on consecutive touchdown drives to start the game. Rodgers ex-

tended the opening drive by running twice for 25 yards and tossed a 12-yard TD pass to Adams for a 7-0 lead.

After the Eagles answered on Wentz’s 1-yard TD run, Rodgers led another 75yard scoring drive. He threw a perfect 20-yard TD pass to Adams to give the Packers a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter. Nolan Carroll had excellent coverage on the play, but Rodgers put the ball in a tight spot and hit Adams in stride in the back of the end zone.

Wade sees the same positive signs.

“We’re enjoying playing together,” the veteran said. “Hopefully, we’re not even close to where we want to be. I look at our record and say ‘10-6? I think we can be 12-4!’ Y’know? That’s how we look at it. But it could be worse as well.

Without injured Toews, Hawks struggle on faceoffs

CHICAGO – They earned three points in the final two games of the “circus trip” without Jonathan Toews, but his injury leaves a big void.

Toews, who suffered an upper-body injury Wednesday in San Jose, didn’t practice Monday and is questionable against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night at the United Center.

The Hawks were dominated in faceoffs and puck possession in each game he missed but managed to beat the Anaheim Ducks, 3-2, and earn a point out of a 2-1 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

“When you’re missing a guy like that, you’ve got to find other ways to work around it,” said Marcus Kruger, the Hawks’ next best at winning faceoffs (48 percent). “I think we did a good job, but we obviously want him back as soon as we can.”

Toews does a lot of things, but his

ability to win faceoffs against the NHL’s best centers is reason enough to want him back. Since he left against the Sharks, the Hawks have won just 50 of 155 faceoffs the past twoplus games (32.3 percent).

They won 26.8 percent against the Ducks, as season low, and won 36.2 percent Jonathan against the Kings. As Toews a team, the Hawks have already plummeted from 14th in the NHL (49.7 percent) to 29th (47.9 percent) – a stat their faceoff guru, Yanic Perreault, pointed out Monday to coach Joel Quenneville.

“You get 21/2 games without [Toews] taking faceoffs, you know how valuable he is,” Quenneville said.

Toews is off to a slow start offensively but is having a great season at the dot – even for him. Winning more than 50 percent is considered good,

and Toews’ career win rate is 57.2 percent.

He has taken 484 faceoffs this season, fourth-most in the NHL, and has won 292 for a 60.3 percentage. He has won 61.2 percent at even strength, 59.7 percent on power-plays and 55.4 percent while the Hawks are shorthanded.

Artem Anisimov and Kruger take most of the key faceoffs when Toews is out, and each is winning less than 50 percent.

“I thought we did relatively well without starting with the puck against two good teams, but we know how good Johnny is – as good as anybody in the league,” Quenneville said. “We certainly miss that aspect of it, and the other guys (on the ice) got to know that we need to be improving, not just the centermen. We need help.”

Getting Toews back would be a big boost. He might take part in the morning skate but will be re-evaluated Tuesday regardless.

Maintenance crew: Toews wasn’t the only one missing from practice. Anisimov, Marian Hossa and Scott Darling also were absent. Anisimov and Hossa took maintenance days, and Darling was sick. Goaltending coach Jimmy Waite stood in for Darling, who is expected to back up Corey Crawford on Tuesday.

‘TVR’ practicing: Injured defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk participated in his first practice since suffering an upper-body injury Oct. 21 in Columbus. Quennevillle said he won’t play Tuesday but will be evaluated each day.

CHICAGO – Good news abounds in the Bulls’ world.

When they returned home from their tidy 4-2 circus road trip to practice on the West Side on Monday, Doug McDermott was back on the court for the first time since being sidelined by a concussion Nov. 12.

“Doug was cleared for noncontact, so he did the dummy portion of practice, went through our script offensive segment,” coach Fred Hoiberg said.

“Won’t know about [adding more Tuesday] until we see how he responds to today’s workload.”

The return of McDermott, who missed the whole six-game trip, only will add to the Bulls’ perimeter offense, which is enjoying an upgrade in 3-point shooting from Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler.

“That’s a part of the deal,” said Wade, adding that James had to buy his own Cubs outfit. “I think he has enough money. He can come up with it. I’ve seen it. They put it out on Uninterrupted, which he’s a part of. He’s ready to go.”

And so, it seems, are the Bulls, who have silenced their critics with a surprisingly good start. Their 10-6 record, tied for second in the Eastern Conference, does not a season make. But it is encouraging, considering that an offseason of major change created a lot of uncertainty.

“The biggest thing that I’m pleased with this group is how much we’re competing,” second-year coach Hoiberg said. “We had a chance to go 6-0 on that trip. I’m so proud of the way these guys compete on a nightly basis.”

Not only are the Bulls harnessing their talent. They’re meshing together without the melodrama and subplots that had crept into the organization the last few years.

Hoiberg likes “the competitive spirit and the way they’ve bought in and the togetherness – they don’t care who gets the credit. When you have that type of chemistry, you’re going to have

Tiger returns to competition this week

Questions more mental than physical for Woods

NASSAU, Bahamas – Tiger Woods has gone through two back surgeries since he last played a golf tournament 15 months ago. He had another back surgery that knocked him out of the Masters for the first time in 2014. He had four knee surgeries before that.

None of that matters to Ernie Els when Woods returns to competition this week.

Els is more curious about what’s going on in his head.

“The talent’s there. It’s been proven. It doesn’t go away,” Els said. “It’s what you think of yourself. It’s what you think where you are. We look at this great player, but he’s not seeing the same stuff in his own mind. A lot of us are like that. When you’ve achieved as much as he has ... it’s a shock to the system not to play as good as you have been. To look at other people looking at you like, ‘Hey, you’re not the same guy,’ that’s hard to take.”

Els, perhaps more than any other player, has a deep golfing connection with Woods.

He was the player Woods sought out 20 years ago at Royal Lytham & St. Annes when deciding whether to

He plans to be in the Bahamas, and he is as eager as anyone else to see how a guy who won 79 times on the PGA

Tour, including 14 majors, stacks up against a generation that grew up in awe of how Woods played golf.

The Hero World Challenge is a holiday tournament with an 18-man field and no cut. Even so, it commands as much attention as any tournament this year. Woods has been a star attraction his entire career, and the appetite is even stronger after an absence that dates to Aug. 23, 2015.

“I can’t wait to watch, either, just to see him play,” Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III said. “The last time I saw him play, I won. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long. I’ve seen his swing. I’ve seen him on video. He’s sent me clips, and I’ve heard the description of how he feels. I’m excited to see him play.”

“You’ve got to start somewhere,” he added. “And I want to see the start.”

Woods already has had one false start. He signed up to play the Safeway Open, only to pull out three days later because he said he felt “vulnerable.”

That followed a week as assistant captain at the Ryder Cup, and cramming in practice the week before with results that made him want to wait.

Love won the Wyndham Championship last year in August at age 51, and it could easily have served as a model for Woods – a power player no longer in his prime, not among the biggest hitters anymore, but with enough experience and talent to find a way to score and to win.

“It has to motivate him that Vijay Singh is lasting until 53, that Ernie is still competitive, that Davis is still competitive,” Love said. “He knows Jack Nicklaus won the Masters in 1986 playing part time. He knows what everybody has done. I know he’s working hard not to come back and be average. He wants to come back and win again.”

Free-agent compensation, international draft top issues

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Negotiators for baseball players and owners are meeting this week in Irving, Texas, in an attempt to reach agreement on a collective bargaining agreement to replace the five-year contract that expires Thursday. After eight work stoppages from 1972-95, baseball has had 21 years of labor peace.

Some of the issues in negotiations:

FREE AGENCY COMPENSATION

Compensation for the loss of free agents has been an issue since the freeagent era began in 1976. The statistical ranking system established in the 1981 strike settlement was scrapped in the current agreement that began with the

2012-13 offseason and replaced by qualifying offers: A team would be entitled to draft-pick compensation if a player left as a free agent after failing to accept a one-year contract for the average salary among the 125 highest-paid players ($17.2 million this year) and the signing club would lose a top pick.

Five of 64 free agents who received qualifying offers accepted during the current agreement, and some lessthan-premier free agents who received offers said their market was limited by teams not wanting to give up draft selections.

INTERNATIONAL AMATEUR DRAFT

Commissioner Rob Manfred has said restraints on contracts for international amateur players have not been as effective as management had

hoped, and he is a proponent of an international draft that would cover residents outside the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The union has been resistant.

CURRENT AMATEUR DRAFT

Teams spent $234 million in the 2011 draft on amateurs residing in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The total dropped to $209 million in the first year of restraints, went up to $220 million the following year, then rose to $224 million in 2014, $249 million in 2015 and $268 million this year.

The sides are negotiating the slot figures used to determine signing bonus pools and the penalties for exceeding pools. Some have expressed concern that the slot values early in the first round encourage a team not headed

to the postseason to tank in the final weeks to get higher draft picks and a larger signing bonus pool.

LUXURY TAX

One of the last items in the negotiations will be the luxury tax. The threshold for the tax has been $189 million for the past three years, and for the past four years, the rate has been 17.5 percent for the first time over the threshold, increasing to 30 percent for the second time in a row, 40 percent for the third and 50 percent for the fourth or subsequent. An increase to $200 million or more is likely, which should lead to greater spending by high-revenue teams currently at or above the threshold. The union and some teams would like the rate to reset for all teams in 2017.

Jim Harbaugh went on and on, as if his incessant whining would overturn the result of what was, in effect, a playoff game before the playoffs begin.

Anyone who listened to Harbaugh in his last year in San Francisco would have easily recognized the tone. It’s what he does when things go bad, and go bad they did Saturday in a thriller at Ohio State that took two overtimes to decide.

The outburst cost Michigan $10,000 in the form of a fine Monday from the Big Ten, pocket change when the coach makes $7 million a year. What was far more costly to Michigan was blowing a 10-point fourth-quarter lead in a game it dearly needed.

Now Michigan waits on the outside, hoping against hope for a Hail Mary that will give the Wolverines one of the four prized spots in the College Football Playoff.

The fact that it’s not totally impossible shows how little things have changed since the five big conferences that rule college football scrapped the Bowl Championship Series three seasons ago.

Yes, the players get paid a little more, so date night may now include a movie as well as a pizza. And four teams now have a chance to prove their case on the field instead of the two anointed each year by the BCS. But it’s still subjective, with the final four teams and pairings decided behind closed doors in a conference room in Texas. The first two years of the new system were relatively easy, but that all figures to change this week in one of the oddest years in college football.

The new rankings will be out Tuesday, and they will be read like tea leaves for an indication where the committee is going. But the real fun comes on Sunday, when the conference title games are over and the playoff teams are named.

Former Secretary of State and committee member Condoleezza Rice may need all her diplomatic skills to pacify the schools left out.

Right now, Michigan seems to be on the outside looking in, though that could change with losses by Washington and Clemson in their conference championship games.

What could keep committee members up all night Saturday, though, would be a win by Penn State over Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game. There would be a lot of unhappy people in Happy Valley if the Nittany Lions won the conference championship and were left out of the playoffs.

They’d be even unhappier if Ohio State – a team Penn State beat at home this year – got in instead.

That’s despite the fact the committee has already indicated it thinks Ohio State has a better resume than the team it lost to.

That aside, it’s anyone’s guess what kind of thinking is going on behind those closed doors in Texas.

Depending on the outcomes of the conference title games, there are various scenarios that could see Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State or

even Colorado find their way into the playoffs.

It’s entirely possible that winning a conference championship may not be enough, which should give pause to those who insist conference title games are more than just a chance to haul in millions more in television revenue.

None of it is particularly clear.

What is clear, though, is that the new way of crowning a national champion still falls short of a true playoff system.

In too many ways, it still feels like the BCS, where in some years it was difficult to figure out just what the criteria for getting in the title game was. That included the 2006-07 season, where Urban Meyer, then at Florida, famously lobbied to poll voters who helped jump the Gators over Michigan into the national championship contest.

Meyer may want to do some more lobbying this week just to make sure his Buckeyes are in. Nothing is

certain, though he and a lot of others can’t fathom the committee leaving Ohio State out.

“I think we’re one of the top teams in the country,” Meyer said after Ohio State escaped with an improbable win over Michigan.

As for Harbaugh, he may be incapable of putting together a coherent case for his team. He spent almost all his post-game press conference complaining about the officiating, when he should have been talking about how a team that lost by a point at Iowa and in double overtime at Ohio State could still be one of the four best teams in the country.

Not to worry, though. Leaving Michigan out of the playoff series will give him something to really whine about.

SPORTS BRIEFS 2 Colorado football players charged after fight outside bar

BOULDER, Colo. – Colorado special teams player Jaleel Awini and backup tight end Christopher Hill have been suspended for the Pac-12 championship game after being arrested after a fight outside a bar.

Awini and Hill were arrested Sunday morning – hours after the Buffaloes clinched the Pac-12 South.

A police report said Hill punched Awini in the jaw, and an unconscious Awini fell to the ground. Hill left the scene.

Officers found what appeared to be cocaine in Awini’s wallet. He could face charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Hill was cited for third-degree assault.

The Boulder Daily Camera first reported the charges.

Awini is suspended indefinitely. Hill is suspended for Friday’s game at this point while coach Mike MacIntyre gathers more information, the school said.

Yankees release Eovaldi, Rumbelow, Mantiply

NEW YORK – Injured pitcher Nathan Eovaldi has been released by the New York Yankees along with right-hander Nick Rumbelow and lefty Joe Mantiply.

The trio had been designated for assignment Nov. 18, and the Yankees announced their release Monday.

Eovaldi will be sidelined next season as he recovers from Aug. 19 surgery to

repair a torn flexor tendon and partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Acquired from the Miami Marlins in a December 2014 trade, Eovaldi was 9-8 with a 4.76 ERA this year.

He made $5.6 million, would have been eligible for salary arbitration and would have become eligible for free agency, anyway, after the 2017 season.

Rumbelow, a seventh-round draft pick of the Yankees in 2013, tore a ligament in his pitching elbow while pitching for Triple-A Scranton in his season debut on April 10, an injury that required Tommy John surgery. Now 25, he was 1-1 with a 4.02 in 17 relief appearances in 2015.

Mantiply was claimed off waivers from Detroit on Nov. 8.

Carolina places Jordan Staal on IR with concussion

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes have placed forward Jordan Staal on injured reserve with a concussion.

General manager Ron Francis announced the move Monday night, a day after Staal was injured during a 3-2 victory over Florida.

At Paradise Island, Bahamas, Freshman De’Aaron Fox posted the second triple-double in school history with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to lead a dominating effort by No. 1 Kentucky.

Fellow rookie Malik Monk scored 23 points for the Wildcats (7-0), who dominated an undersized team and quickly turned the game into a romping display of their athleticism and ability to run in transition.

Kentucky led by double figures roughly 6 minutes in, led 58-30 by halftime then scored the first 12 points after the break to go up 40 with 15 minutes left.

Sam Cunliffe scored 14 points for the Sun Devils (4-3), who shot just 34 percent while the Wildcats scored 21 points off turnovers.

The game, billed as the Atlantis Showcase, was played at the same ballroom-turned-arena that hosted last week’s Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas.

No. 18 Butler 68, Utah 59: At Salt Lake City, Kelan Martin scored 18 points as Butler, which moved into Top 25 earlier Monday, remained undefeated by handing Utah its first loss of the season.

Butler controlled the game from the opening tip and trailed just once at 20-19. The Bulldogs responded to that with a 14-3 run to take a 10-point lead.

A 13-4 run early in the second half, highlighted by a deep 3-pointer from Tyler Lewis, put Utah away. Butler did what it’s done all season – shoot well from the field, play stingy defense and limit turnovers. The Bulldogs shot 52.8 percent and held the Utes to 36.5 percent.

Tyler Wideman chipped in 15 points for Butler.

Kyle Kuzma led Utah with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Lorenzo Bonam finished with 17 points.

Esa Ahamad scored 19 points to lead West Virginia to a Victory Monday night in the final game of the NIT Season Tip-Off. The Mountaineers (5-1) forced a school-record 40 turnovers, surpass-

ing the 34 by VMI in 2014-15.

West Virginia started the game on an 8-0 run over the first 3 minutes, then both teams essentially traded baskets through the next 12 minutes.

In the final 5 minutes of the first half, James Long and Nathan Adrian led a 22-5 scoring run, giving the Mountaineers a 60-27 lead.

Adrian had 15 points for West Virginia, while Daxter Miles Jr. added 11 and Long had a career-high 10.

Zavier Peart led the Jaspers (2-4) with 11 points.

Florida State 75, Minnesota 67: At Tallahassee, Florida, Jonathan Isaac and Dwayne Bacon continued to come through for Florida State.

Bacon scored a game-high 18 points and Isaac got his second double-double of the season (14 points, 13 rebounds) as the Seminoles defeated Minnesota in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

The Seminoles (6-1) shot just 34.6 percent from the field in the first half and trailed 33-31 at halftime. They opened the second half by making six of their first eight as part of a 15-5 run over the first five minutes to give them the lead for good.

EVANSTON – Bryant McIntosh scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half to lead Northwestern to a 65-58 victory over Wake Forest on Monday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

McIntosh struggled in the first half on 2-of-8 shooting, but caught fire midway through the second, hitting 8-for-8 from the field for 19 points after the 12:02 mark. His 3 with 1:02 left gave the Wildcats (5-2) a 61-56 lead.

John Collins had 12 points and 16 rebounds, and Keyshawn Woods added 12 points for Wake Forest (5-2).

Woods’ 3 cut the Northwestern lead to 61-58 with 30.3 seconds left, but Sanjay Lumpkin scored four straight points to finish the game off for the Wildcats.

Scottie Lindsey added 12 points and Lumpkin finished with 10 points and seven rebounds for Northwestern.

McIntosh had to leave the game early in the second half after taking a shot to the face. After being tended to on the sideline he returned to ignite a 6-0 Northwestern run.

Trailing 42-38, McIntosh scored

the game’s next six points to give the Wildcats a 44-42 lead with 11:01 in the second half.

26 Preventing sleep apnea will help heart Note to readers: This column originally ran in December 2014.

Dear Dr. K: At my last checkup, my doctor asked if I snore. When I told the doctor my husband says I snore a lot, the doctor said snoring can be a sign of heart disease, particularly in postmenopausal women. What does snoring have to do with heart disease?

Dear Reader: Snoring is not a sign of heart disease, but it can be a sign of sleep apnea. And people with sleep apnea are at greater risk for heart disease.

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes brief, repeated pauses in breathing throughout the night. A woman’s risk of sleep apnea rises after menopause. That’s when levels of the hormone progesterone (which increases the number of breaths per minute) decline. In addition to affecting your slumber, sleep apnea can threaten your heart health.

My colleague Dr. Lawrence Epstein is associate medical director for the Sleep Clinic at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He explains sleep apnea is a risk factor for high blood pressure, which raises the risk of both heart attacks and strokes. Sleep apnea also is more common in people who are obese. And obesity is itself a risk factor for heart disease.

So that’s why your doctor asked about snoring. If you have sleep apnea, you might be at higher risk for heart disease.

Snoring is just one sign of sleep apnea.

Other signs include daytime drowsiness, morning headaches or mood changes.

If your doctor suspects sleep apnea, he or she may refer you for a sleep study. This test can confirm or rule it out.

The gold standard treatment for sleep apnea is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). CPAP blows air into the airways to keep them open at night. It is

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff nearly 100 percent effective at treating sleep apnea, and it improves blood pressure in people with sleep apnea who have heart disease.

But here’s the catch with CPAP: You have to use it. Some people find CPAP uncomfortable at night and don’t use it as prescribed.

There are other options. For example, an oral appliance, which looks like a mouth guard or retainer, can help prevent your tongue from falling back and blocking the airway while you sleep. For many people who find CPAP uncomfortable, this is a pretty good option.

If you do have sleep apnea, try some lifestyle changes. They may reduce your apnea episodes enough to avoid the need for treatment.

• Turn over. In some people, apnea occurs only when they’re on their back. If that’s true for you, buy a body pillow to keep you on your side.

• Avoid alcohol. Alcohol is a muscle relaxant. It can slacken the tissues of your throat while you sleep.

• Stop smoking. Cigarette smoking causes the upper airway to swell.

• Lose weight. One of the best ways to prevent – or eliminate – sleep apnea is to shed extra pounds.

These changes not only can improve your sleep apnea, they also may reduce your risk of heart trouble and strokes.

DEAR ABBY My daughter and son-in-law Jeanne have only one Phillips vehicle that is running. He works out of town, so he drives it, which leaves my daughter home all day without transportation.

Earlier in the school year, they signed up my granddaughter for after-school sports, and she has to practice every day. Since my daughter has no way to take her, they expect me to pick up my granddaughter and bring her home. This means I have to wait for her for about an hour after I get off work, which delays me an hour or more getting home.

After working all day, I’m tired. I just want to get home and get all the things done I need to do, so I can rest and get ready for work again the next day. I’m not sure what I should do. I feel like I’m being taken advantage of. Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated. – Tired And Used Dear Tired: This shouldn’t be your responsibility. When your daughter and son-in-law signed up the child for sports, they should have thought it through. Rather than impose upon you, perhaps they should ask the parents of other children in the program if your granddaughter could ride along.

If that’s not feasible, consider this: You stated your son-in-law drives the only running vehicle, which leads me to believe they have another one that’s broken down.

Could you loan or give them money to put it in working condition? If so, you would be off the hook.

Dear Abby: I’m the manager of a medium-sized apartment building with several older tenants. As these tenants get older, their needs become greater. When it’s time for the children and family to step in, not all do.

Some think – and actually have told me – giving the manager $20 at Christmas will ensure Mom/Dad gets to the grocery store, bank and doctor, and the bills are paid all year.

Abby, this is not my family, and I do not feel obligated to take them to run their errands. Their children then tell me, “What am supposed to do? I don’t have time,” etc., and I reply it’s their responsibility, not mine.

If South had had weak spades and strong clubs, making three no-trump the best game, it would have been hard to get there over four clubs! But a three-spade rebid would have been a tad cautious.

If only he could have bid three-andtwo-thirds spades.

The winning line, assuming there was one, depended upon guessing correctly. If trumps were 4-1, declarer needed the diamond finesse to be winning. But if the spades were the more-likely 3-2, he could afford to lose a diamond as long as he took two club ruffs on the board. Then, his 12 tricks would be four spades, two hearts, three diamonds, one club and the two ruffs.

However, it was not that straightforward. After quite some time running different play sequences through his mind, South saw the best plan. After the club ruff at trick three, he led a low diamond from the dummy. East won and played another trump, but declarer won, ruffed a second club, took the top hearts, ruffed a heart, drew the missing trump and claimed.
