Weekend shoppers spend less because of discounts

NEW YORK – Thanksgiving weekend shoppers picked up hot toys, TVs and new Apple products, buying both online and in stores, but spent less per person because of rampant discounting that they’ve come to demand.

Once all the receipts are in, customers look to have spent an average of $289.19 over the fourday weekend, down nearly 3.5 percent from a year ago, based on a survey by the National Retail Federation. The pressure on prices was especially strong on products like TVs. More than 154 million customers said they had shopped or planned to this Thanksgiving weekend, up from 151 million a year ago, according to the survey conducted Friday and Saturday by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics. And more were doing it online, as about 99.1 million went to the stores and 108.5 million shopped online.

Carmen Cunnyngham of Kansas City, Kansas, was in Denver on Sunday and decided to stop at the mall to pick up a new pair of Ugg boots for her daughter. They were discounted at Nordstrom, which is one of her favorite places to shop. She said she got a bit of a late start this year because of the presidential election, so she’s been looking online for deals and jumping when she sees them.

“I’m trying to make sure I get the wish lists in and look at those and shop and do what I can before Christmas gets here,” she said.

The drop in spending underscores how even with an improving economy, many shoppers are still focused on habit developed during the Great Recession.

They’re fixated on deals and more readily using technology to find them whenever they want to buy. More than a third of customers surveyed by the NRF said that all of their purchases were on sale, up 11 percent from a year ago.

The Thanksgiving weekend kicks off the holiday shopping season but stores have increasingly started their sales earlier.

Stores had been wary about being left with a lot of inventory they would have to discount to get off the shelves, and so started the season with less on hand. That will help preserve profit margins, but they’ve still planned aggressive promotions to grab shoppers.

“People are much more deliberate about the purchases they make,” NRF CEO Matthew Shay said Sunday. “In a perfect world, everyone would sell at full price, but as consumers and as buyers all of us would like to get a deal on things we buy.

The era of promotional sales is with us to stay.”

Although shoppers are spending less per person, more shoppers still could translate into more spending. MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, which tracks spending on all kinds of payments, estimated that spending over the fourday weekend will be up 3.8 percent, with online sales up by double-digit percentages and in-store sales up in the single digits. But MasterCard Advisors’ Sarah Quinlan also cited a slight decline in the average sale because of promotions.

DeKalb, Sycamore residents seek unique gifts at local shops

news@daily-chronicle.com Business was booming Saturday at My Favorite Things in DeKalb, as area residents flocked to local stores in downtown DeKalb and downtown Sycamore to do their Christmas shopping on Small Business Saturday.

The store’s owner, Joyce Waters, said her store was much busier than usual Saturday thanks to local and nationwide efforts that encourage people to shop locally the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

“I’m very pleased with the turnout this year,” she said. “The small shop owner does things that are normally hard to do at big stores. We love our people, and we’re good to them. It’s not all about the money.

It’s doing what I love to do, which is sell wonderful things that make people happy.”

Cracker Jax in downtown DeKalb also was filled with shoppers as they searched for unique gifts. Owner Lauren Woods said she’s very appreciative of the Small Business Saturday campaign because it’s helped keep local stores in business. As an incentive to encourage customers to shop locally, she offered 20 percent off everything in the store.

“We have a lot of unique items that you don’t get at big stores, and we provide really good, personal customer service. They appreciate that we care about them,” Woods said.

Marti Brown of DeKalb was shopping at Cracker Jax to buy Christmas gifts for her family specifically because it was Small Business Saturday.

“I want to support DeKalb businesses, and I love this store because it has unique offerings and it has been here a long time,” she said.

Downtown Sycamore also was bustling with shoppers Saturday afternoon. Roseann Para, co-owner of Sweet Earth, said customer traffic was very steady, explaining that Small Business Saturday is popular with local residents.

“We get a really good response.

More people are shopping local, and they’re seeking local products. We sell a lot of U.S.-made and locally made products,” Para said. “Downtown Sycamore is the center of the

community, and people want to see it thriving.

“We’re here for the long run.

Small-business owners here don’t want to make a quick buck. We want to satisfy our customers’ needs and wants.”

Malorie Nelson of Kingston has been shopping at Sweet Earth for many years, and she was buying Christmas presents Saturday. She said she thinks it’s important to support the downtown shopping district.

“A lot of the money generated at

small businesses goes back into the community, and that’s really important. I like to support the Sycamore shopping district,” she said.

The Sycamore Chamber of Commerce has been helping to promote the importance of shopping locally for several years, using social media throughout the season to ask residents to remember small businesses as they do their holiday shopping.

Rose Treml, executive director of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, said that almost every store in downtown Sycamore is owned by local families who care about the community. She explained that almost 50 percent of the money spent at local businesses stays in the community, as opposed to about 14 percent at big chain stores.

“The community does support these businesses because they want a downtown they can walk through and go into a variety of different stores,” Treml said. “When you go into a Sycamore business and buy

something, they know your name.

Sycamore’s shops help keep its uniqueness. You have quaint businesses here that make our community stand out.”

Nona and Mike Schultz of Sycamore were stopping into several downtown Sycamore businesses to support Small Business Saturday.

“We love this downtown area, and if we don’t shop there regularly, it might not be there for us,” Nona said as her husband tried on a pair of boots at Stomp.

Bethany Adamski, an employee at Stomp, said her store had been very busy throughout the day, and it was doing very well in sales.

“Small Business Saturday is an opportunity for the community to come together and help support the businesses,” she said. “The local stores have a nostalgic feel that separates them from the big-box stores. People get a personal experience here. We start conversations with our customers and get to know them.”

100 years of farming

Peterson family’s land in Genoa receives Centennial Farm status

GENOA – One hundred years ago, World War I was raging in Europe, Weeghman Park, now known as Wrigley Field, opened in Chicago and the dwarf planet Pluto was photographed for the first time.

A little more than 100 years ago, in 1913, Otto Peterson of Sweden settled in Genoa.

Soon after becoming a landowner, Peterson started hauling lumber from the Kishwaukee River to build a barn.

The barn was built in 1914, and the Petersons’ farmhouse was completed in 1915.

The 160-acre Peterson farm, 33210 N. State Road in Genoa, now is owned and operated by Otto Peterson’s grandson, Donald, 77, and Donald’s wife, Nayna, 71. Donald Peterson started working on the farm when he was in high school, and he said he plans to continue running the farm – and fixing antique tractors during the winter months – for as long as he can.

To honor the family’s 100 years of farming, the Illinois Department of Agriculture gave the farm Centennial Farm status.

In August, the Peterson family was invited to attend the Illinois State Fair to be recognized and to receive a sign commemorating their farm.

To qualify for Centennial Farm status, an agricultural property must have been owned by the same family for at least 100 years. More than 9,500 Illinois farms have been named Centennial Farms since the program was created in 1972.

The Peterson family has been farming on its property through two world wars, the Great Depression and various floods and droughts.

“We have been farming the land through feast and famine,” Donald Peterson said. “For three generations, we have always farmed. For us, it’s our legacy – our family’s history.”

Although the land and family have remained the same, the Peterson farm has changed through the years. Until 1972, the farm raised livestock, including chicken, pigs and cattle. Other changes include the building of additional barns and the addition of three retention ponds

He and his wife, Nayna, farm the 160 acres of land, which has changed over the years. that act as a conservation wetland and an attraction for deer and pheasants. To celebrate the farm’s centennial, the Petersons built a windmill.

“There have been monumental changes since my grandfather bought the farm a little more than 100 years ago,” Donald Peterson said. “Science has advanced, there are new varieties of corn and soybeans, and farmers trade around the world.

“We used to have cow pastures, horses and plows and a threshing ring, and

now we have combines and tractors that are automatic and use GPS. It makes me wonder, ‘What will farming be like in 100 years from now?’ ” Reading through his grandfather’s farm ledger, he remembers seeing a bag of seed cost between $15 and $25.

“Now, a bag of seed costs between $300 and $400,” he said. “Our seeds now are very different. We have double or triple their yields and use less chemicals.”

Donald Peterson said that one of the largest changes to the farm involves peo-

ple, not land.

“Before, neighbors used to work together to plant and harvest,” he said.

“Now, we still help each other, but it’s not like before. Farmers are now more independent.”

Through the years, the farm has been a meeting place for the family. During the summer, the family often camps on the farm. Every year, the Petersons host a family picnic for Labor Day. When Donald and Nayna Peterson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, they hosted a party on the farm underneath a large tent.

For the Petersons, keeping their family’s farming legacy alive is important. Their two children, Bill Peterson and Deanna (Peterson) Bazon, and four grandchildren often visit and help out on the farm. Donald and Nanya Peterson’s 13-year-old grandson, Cody, has his own tractor and helps with the harvest.

“Too often you see farms being divided and sold because the kids don’t want to farm,” Nayna Peterson said. “It’s important that our family still cares, that they’re interested in and involved with the farm. We’ll be here until we die, and then we’re going to pass it on and keep it in the family for at least another 100 years.”

The council also meets as a Committee of the Whole at 5 p.m. than a year ago, Rockford-based developer First Midwest Group is offering to make some upgrades at another property.

If the council agrees to allow ATI to move into the new building, First Midwest said it will make several upgrades at the DeKalb Shopping Center, 1612-1718 Sycamore Road, a largely vacant retail center with vacant spaces once occupied by retailers Big Lots and Jo Ann Fabrics.

In 2008, the developer received up to $100,000 in tax increment financing assistance to perform property maintenance including façade improvements,

flooring and new heating, air conditioning and electrical systems.

The loan was to be repaid with the sales tax proceeds the center generated, and the developer also was going to build a new building that would draw a new business to town, but neither of those things has happened, city attorney Dean Frieders said.

Now First Midwest pledges that if the council agrees to clear the way for ATI to move into the new building, it will repave, restripe and reconfigure the parking lot at the DeKalb Shopping Center and replace the lighting and make landscaping upgrades to make the property more appealing to a national retailer.

The work would have to be completed by July, Charlton said.

Council members considered waiving a second reading of the proposed change to the annexation agreement for the property at their Nov. 14 meeting.

Although five of eight council members voted to do so, such motions require six of eight yes votes to pass.

The council could give final approv-

al today to the change that would allow ATI to move into the building, and they could begin the process soon after, she said.

“They’re pretty much ready to pick up their permits the next day and start working,” Charlton said. “They’ve already been through their building review.”

DeKALB – City Council members are set to decide today whether to make some changes that would allow a national chain of rehabilitation clinics to open in a new building on Sycamore Road and could brighten up another shopping center.

ATI Physical Therapy, which operates rehab clinics in 19 states, has signed a lease agreement for 2,600 square feet of the newly constructed and vacant 8,015-square-foot building at 2115 Sycamore Road, officials have said.

Before ATI can move in, however, aldermen must agree to change the annexation agreement for property that includes the vacant building to allow for more nonretail uses. It’s a change that city staff advised against, but one the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission recommended in October.

“Staff … noted that ATI perhaps could be located very well in another location,” DeKalb Community Development Director Jo Ellen Charlton said at a public hearing on the proposal earlier this month. “The applicant indicated that they had those negotiations with ATI, and this is the site they wanted. They are pursuing this option to see what the City Council will allow.”

Council members earlier this year agreed to annex the property, where a long-abandoned veterinary office had long been an eyesore. There are two buildings on the 2-acre site, and the council has made it a priority to reserve space in the retail corridor in hopes of maximizing the amount of sales tax revenue it can reap.

One of the buildings, at 3,250 square feet, already is occupied by Aspen Dental, 2061 Sycamore Road. If ATI Physical Therapy were to move in, about half the property would be occupied by nonretail users, city documents show.

Chicago man awaits sentence in federal visa fraud case

CHICAGO – A man who’s pleaded guilty to wire fraud awaits sentencing in what authorities describe as a scheme to defraud foreign investors into backing a convention complex by O’Hare International Airport.

Anshoo Sethi of Chicago could be sentenced this week.

Federal authorities alleged fraudulent documents were used to raise millions from mostly Chinese investors who believed they’d get U.S. residency in return.

The case involves the EB-5 visa program, which allows foreign investors green cards.

Sethi’s attorney told The Chicago SunTimes that Sethi was misled by consultants and he’s refunded $145 million.

Authorities insist Sethi was “indisputably” in charge.

The newspaper also reported that Sethi has links to public officials, including a former alderman. Sethi also hired House Speaker Michael Madigan’s tax firm. Firm officials said Sethi was dropped as a client once authorities began investigating.

Police arrest 7 in Illinois after alleged St. Louis theft

FARMERSVILLE – Authorities said seven people were arrested in central Illinois after an alleged theft at a St. Louis mall and an interstate car chase.

Police said two vehicles were allegedly involved in a theft Saturday morning at the Plaza Frontenac in St. Louis.

Frontenac Police Chief Tom Becker said the alleged thieves smashed glass display

cases at Saks Fifth Avenue to steal purses and then fled. One vehicle headed north on Interstate 55, leading to a police chase. The vehicle stopped just south of Farmersville in Illinois. All seven people who attempted to flee on foot were captured.

Man arrested in death of 8-year-old Olney girl

OLNEY – Illinois authorities have arrested a man in the death of an 8-year-old Olney girl who went missing last week.

Illinois State Police said in a statement Sunday that 53-year-old Glen R. Ramey of Olney was arrested for first-degree murder and predatory sexual assault in the death of Sabrina Stauffenberg.

The child’s body was found Wednesday behind a vinegar plant on the south side of Olney. Ramey is being held at Richland County Jail pending his arraignment.

Multiple police agencies investigated the case, including police in Olney, Flora, Salem

and Effingham.

Railway security guard fatally shot in suburbs

HARVEY – Officials said a security guard at a Canadian National Railway facility in suburban Chicago is dead after a fatal shooting.

City of Harvey spokesman Sean Howard alleged that a man near the railway facility on Saturday evening was trying to steal a car when he crashed a vehicle, ran out and shot the security guard. The car was abandoned and the alleged shooter ran off. Harvey police and other agencies are searching for the shooter The guard was shot in the abdomen and taken to Advocate South Suburban Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On Sunday, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 38-year-old Tyrone Hardin of Riverdale.

The president-elect himself launched a Twitter offensive that spanned more than 12 hours on Sunday, casting a shadow over the legitimacy of an election that he actually won.

“I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally,” he tweeted in the afternoon before alleging in an evening tweet “serious voter fraud in Virginia, New Hampshire and California.” Trump’s transition team did not respond to questions seeking evidence of the unfounded claims.

There’s been no indication of widespread vote manipulation, illegal voting or hacking that materially affected the outcome one way or the other. It’s that very lack of evidence that suggests Trump is likely to prevail in recounts.

Trump on Sunday tweeted part of Clinton’s concession speech, when she told supporters they must accept that “Donald Trump is going to be our president,” and snippets from her debate remarks, when she denounced the Republican nominee for refusing to say in ad-

vance that he would accept the Election Day verdict.

This came on top of his saying it was a “scam” that Green Party nominee Jill Stein was revisiting the vote count in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Trump won Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and as of Wednesday, held a lead of almost 11,000 votes in Michigan, with the results awaiting state certification Monday. His Michigan margin was a hair’s breadth 0.22 percent of the state’s votes.

Clinton leads the national popular vote by close to 2 million votes, but Trump won 290 electoral votes to Clinton’s 232, not counting Michigan. She could conceivably tip the electoral balance in the remote event that all flipped to her in recounts.

Trump returned to New York on Sunday evening after spending Thanksgiving weekend at his West Palm Beach estate. His transition team said the president-elect had scheduled a series of meetings Monday with prospective administration hires.

Among the jobs Trump has still yet to fill: secretary of state. Internal division over the position again spilled out into the open Sunday as Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway voiced her concerns with the possibility of Mitt Romney landing such a significant position.

Trump supporters “feel a bit betrayed that you can get a Romney back in there after everything he did,” Conway said. “We don’t even know if he voted for Donald Trump. He and his consultants were nothing but awful to Donald Trump for a year.” She added that she was “reflecting what the grassroots are saying.”

Conway said nothing on Cuba has been decided. But she noted that the U.S. is allowing commercial aircraft to do business with a repressive Cuban government and Cuban military. And she said the “first order of business” is to rally the international community around trying to free political prisoners.

While Obama opened some U.S. investment and travel to Cuba through executive order, vast restrictions tied up in the trade embargo remain at the insistence of Republican lawmakers.

WASHINGTON – The Cuban government must move toward enacting greater freedoms for its people and giving Americans something in return if it wants to keep warmer U.S. relations initiated by President Barack Obama, top aides to President-elect Donald Trump said Sunday.

The comments by Trump advisers Kellyanne Conway and Reince Priebus came after the death of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Castro’s younger brother, 85-year-old Raul Castro, took control in 2006, and later negotiated with Obama to restore diplomatic relations.

Priebus, Trump’s incoming chief of staff, said Trump would “absolutely” reverse Obama’s opening to Cuba unless there is “some movement” from the Cuban government.

“Repression, open markets, freedom of religion, political prisoners – these things need to change in order to have open and free relationships, and that’s what President-elect Trump believes, and that’s where he’s going to head, “ Priebus told “Fox News Sunday.”

Conway made similar remarks and noted that any diplomatic deal will have to benefit American workers.

On Saturday, while Obama offered condolences to Castro’s family and said the U.S. extends “a hand of friendship to the Cuban people,” Trump tweeted: “Fidel Castro is dead!”

Trump later released a statement noting his administration “will do all it can to ensure the Cuban people can finally begin their journey toward prosperity and liberty.”

Increase in police deaths is alarming One can’t draw causation from rhetoric, national media attention or social media outrage, but there definitely has been an increase in the deaths of police officers who intentionally were shot and killed because of their profession.

Whatever the reason, the trend is alarming and threatening to the safety of not only the law enforcement community but individual communities and the nation as a whole.

As of Friday, 61 police officers had been shot and killed this year compared with 41 similar incidents in 2015. One is too many, but the sharp increase in deaths, particularly in recent weeks, should give us pause.

No one said law enforcement was a safe profession, least of all the men and women who’ve chosen that profession, but it’s one thing to face the many dangers that always have been present and quite another to be targeted – essentially assassinated – for doing a job that is vital to society.

The senseless slayings of police officers are, in the words of Steven Casstevens, a former Cary police chief and president of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, something beyond typical criminal acts.

“I refuse to accept the normalization of violence against police. Targeting, harming and killing law enforcement officers is a vicious, calculated act of domestic terrorism.

It is not to be entertained, much less tolerated, by a nation that lives, breathes and thrives on liberty and freedom from tyranny. Every decent citizen of this country should demand that this stop,” Casstevens recently wrote in a statement.

We agree with that characterization, and we want the local law enforcement community to know that they have our support. We also are fortunate to live in communities that value and respect police officers and the law enforcement community.

There are efforts across the nation to stiffen penalties for violence committed against police officers. While each individual legislative action would have to be judged on its merits, we generally are supportive of that movement.

We certainly share the outrage against these cowardly murders.

ANOTHER VIEW

Environmental deals not always perfect In a year marked by impatience with traditional politics and institutions, two major, little-discussed international agreements struck in recent weeks show that patient effort, forthright presidential leadership, respect for institutions and compromise can accomplish what emotional outbursts and shortsighted me-first-ism cannot.

First was a landmark agreement struck in Kigali, Rwanda, last month that will phase out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), greenhouse gases used in appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners.

HFCs are powerful greenhouse agents – a thousand times more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide.

Meanwhile, refrigerators and air conditioners could run with alternatives. If nations would summon the political will to press a transition, in other words, they could do quite a bit to combat climate change – preventing perhaps a whole degree Fahrenheit of warming – at relatively low cost.

Global negotiators had been trying to do just that for seven years, under a pre-existing treaty, the Reagan-era Montreal Proto-

col, which world governments struck in 1987 to phase out chlorofluorocarbons, a related class of environmentally unfriendly gases responsible for eroding the planet’s protective ozone layer.

Even though the protocol provided a negotiating structure and enforcement mechanism for the deal, the HFC amendment nevertheless took nearly a decade to hammer out, and President Barack Obama’s engagement proved crucial to getting it done. The result is a compromise – richer nations have to transition faster than poorer ones, but poorer ones must halt using HFCs in time, too. Effort, not grievance-mongering or extremism, made the difference.

The story is similar with a major global agreement that world governments concluded to protect a massive, 600,000-square-mile swath of ocean off Antarctica, now the world’s largest marine preserve. One of Earth’s least disturbed marine ecosystems, the Ross Sea contains huge numbers of krill, whales, seals and fish, and 38 percent of the world’s Adélie penguins. Nutrients churned up in the region’s waters enter the global

ocean circulation and support a variety of marine species.

Once again, a pre-existing global institution, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, provided the structure for international negotiations, which dragged on because of objections from China and Russia. In the end, 24 countries and the European Union agreed to prohibit fishing and other resource extraction in the Ross Sea for 35 years, leaving the question of protecting other zones for a later date.

Neither agreement is perfect.

Experts warn that current global efforts, including the HFC treaty, are helpful but not ambitious enough to stave off dangerous climate change. A variety of countries wanted to add other areas of ocean off Antarctica to the list of protected ecosystems, and global negotiators failed to do so.

But political compromises, even ones years in the making, are never perfect. The real lesson is that it is foolish to surrender to cynicism or to make the perfect the enemy of the good.

Midwest Museum to offer mouse dissection DAILY CHRONICLE The Midwest Museum of Natural History in Sycamore will wrap up its dissection series with the most advanced dissection of the year at 7 p.m. Dec. 15.

Participants will get a hands-on look at the unique features of mammalian anatomy. They will find out how mammals are different from the other animals the museum has explored through the year in its dissec-

tion series. Each attendee will get his or her own specimen.

The museum’s dissection series won an Award of Merit in Educational Programming from the Illinois Association of Museums in 2015. Each year, the museum offers a variety of animals to explore in the series, such as arthropods, reptiles, amphibians and mammals.

This series is designed for ages 8 and older, however budding scientists are invited to join with the active help

of an adult.

Registration for this event is required by 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1.

For the first time since the 1990-91 season, the Huskies have won four of their first five games and put on an offensive show behind senior guard Ally Lehman’s triple-double in a 108-66 win over Illinois State on Saturday night at the NIU Convocation Center.

The Huskies came into the game ranked fifth in the country in points per game (94.3), and while NIU second-year coach Lisa Carlsen said the scoring average likely isn’t sustainable – “it’s fun though” she laughed – she’s been impressed by the team’s ball control and assist totals, and she expects teams to be on alert for the Huskies offense.

“I think every team is going to try something different against us now,” Carlsen said. “It’s not going to be any secret that we’re scoring a lot of points and what are teams going to do to try and take us out of that? I think that’s what we’re going to see in the next week or two weeks.”

After flirting with one on numerous occasions in her career, Lehman got a triple-double Saturday – finishing with 19 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. It’s the third triple-double in program history and first since Leslie Pottinger in 1995 vs. Loyola. Lehman said that she didn’t know she was one rebound away from the feat heading into the fourth quarter. “(Assistant) coach John (McGinty) said (after the third quarter), ‘Hey, go get a rebound. Go get one rebound.’

Then all of a sudden, I get the rebound and ... then I’m out and I get ‘Good job, Al,’ ” said Lehman, who grabbed an offensive rebound on the first possession of the fourth quarter to finish the triple-double and then sat for the rest of the lopsided win.

Lehman, who also broke a program record with 48 points in a game earlier this season, now averages 20.8 points, 11.8 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game.

With the big second quarter, they built a 61-34 lead at halftime – the most points scored in a half in Carlsen’s two seasons.

“Sometimes we don’t know how

much we’re scoring and we look up at the scoreboard going into halftime and it’s like, ‘Whoa,’ ” said freshman Janae Poisson, who made all five of her 3-pointers to finish with 19 points.

They also outscored the Redbirds (2-3) in the third quarter, 30-14.

On the game, Lehman finished 9 for 11 from the field, sophomore guard/ forward Courtney Woods scored a team-high 23 points, senior forward Cassidy Glenn had 16 and sophomore

guard Mikayla Voigt added 12.

It’s the third time this season the Huskies have had five players in double figures.

As a team, they finished 51.8 percent from the floor and 13 for 25 (52 percent) from behind the 3-point arc.

In the second quarter alone, Poisson scored 10 points and had two 3s and Lehman scored nine points on 4-of-4 shooting. As a team, they shot 13 for 17 (76.5 percent) and 4 for 5 on 3-pointers.

“When you’re just playing up-anddown and you’re comfortable – all five people on the floor are on the same page – I don’t think you realize the points you’re putting up until maybe halftime and we look at the stat sheet and, ‘Wow, that’s a big quarter,’ ” Carlsen said. “When it’s happening, you don’t think about it.”

The 108 points aren’t a season high for the Huskies. They scored 114 in a double-overtime victory Nov.16 against Milwaukee.

EXTRA PASSES: The Huskies are now 3-0 at home, averaging 105.3 points per game. ... NIU is now 3-1 against fellow Illinois schools this season. ...

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – For the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team, there was strength in numbers against Illinois-Chicago.

Despite another monster game from the Flames’ leading scorer, the Huskies had four players in double figures and led most of the way in a 92-81 victory in the final day of the NIU Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

UIC sophomore guard Dikembe Dixson, who came into the game tied for ninth in the nation for points per game (24.0), finished with a game-high 31 – going 7 for 12 from the floor and 14 for 20 from the free-throw line.

However, NIU senior guard Aaric Armstead scored a team-high 21 points, freshman guard Eugene German had a career-high 17, senior center Marin Maric had 16 and sophomore center Jaylen Key scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting, and the Huskies finished shooting 54.8 percent as a team.

The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Huskies, who improved to 4-2 at home this season.

“It was one of those games that we needed,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said. “After you lose three straight by 11 (combined) points, you just want to find a way to win a game. I thought our energy was great. I thought our effort

was great, and we finally finished – we closed out the game.”

For Armstead, it was been a breakout tournament offensively. He came into the three games averaging 6.8 points and bumped that up to 11.9 after the win. He scored a career-high 24 points in an 85-80 double-overtime loss Friday to Elon.

“I feel like I’m in [a good rhythm], I’m just trying to get consistent and stay consistent throughout the season,” said Armstead, who went 7 for 11 from the field.

The Huskies (4-3 overall) were looking to attack the basket, Montgomery said. Coming into the game, they averaged 19 attempts from 3-point range.

Against the Flames, the Huskies finished 4 for 8 on 3-pointers – including only two tries in the first half.

“We didn’t shoot a lot of 3s today,” Montgomery said. “We said we were going to play a little more inside out.

We want to get the ball to our bigs.”

When the Huskies did attempt shots from beyond the arc, they came at crucial times.

Sophomore guard Laytwan Porter and Maric each made one in the first two minutes of the second half to get the offense going, and Armstead connected on a 3 in the left corner to give the Huskies an 83-72 cushion with 3:59 remaining.

“That’s kind of how the game turned out,” Armstead said of the season-low

3-point attempts. “We just tried to take what the defense was giving us.”

German had the best game of his young NIU career, finishing 7 of 10 from the field and 3 of 4 from the line.

He had a number of nifty finishes at the basket, including an up-and-under reverse layup in the second half.

“I was just being patient and seeing what was the right play to make,” said German, who scored 14 points against Roosevelt. “They were denying the ball pretty hard on the wing, so I was just trying to find the open seam.”

The Flames (3-3) had 16 points from Marcus Ottey and 11 from Tarkus Ferguson.

Extra passes: Sophomore guard Marshawn Wilson was back after missing the past two games with a suspension, but he only played two minutes. ... Elon won the NIU Thanksgiving Classic after winning all three games, including a 72-66 win Saturday over Cal Poly. ...

Armstead won the opening tip from UIC and scored on a layup five seconds into the game. ... NIU sophomore guard Austin Pauga corralled a loose ball and made a short jumper before the buzzer in the first half. ... DeKALB – The Northern Illinois volleyball team is headed to Missouri.

The Huskies will open the first round of the NCAA tournament against No. 15 seed Missouri (25-5) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Columbia, Missouri, the team learned at a selection show watch party Sunday night.

It will be a 350-plus mile trip for the Huskies – much like many of their conference games in the Mid-American Conference.

“I feel like it’s no different, travel-wise, than going to a conference match,” NIU coach Ray Gooden said.

“We’re use to it. We’re used to being (on the bus) for two movies and a sitcom.

That part we’re OK with.”

NIU went 7-1 on the road during MAC play, the only loss coming at Miami (Ohio), which also made the NCAA tournament and will face Oregon (20-9) in the first round in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Huskies (25-5) earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after winning the MAC tournament on Nov. 20 in a three-set sweep of RedHawks (24-6) in DeKalb. Despite knowing the Huskies were a lock to make the field, there was plenty of anticipation from the team, which lined up in front of a big-screen TV and exploded with cheers when NIU was announced.

“Just seeing our name up there – personally, I’ve never seen it up there, so it was a pretty cool moment,” said senior Jenna Radtke, who was named the MAC Player of the Year. “I know a bunch of friends and family that were watching and I got a bunch of texts from them.

We’re all really excited.”

The winner of NIU and Missouri will play either Iowa State (18-10) or Purdue (18-13).

Missouri is coming off a strong campaign and swept Tennessee to secure the SEC championship on Saturday.

The Huskies also swept the Volunteers this season at the GW Invitational in Washington, D.C. “It’s definitely good at this point of the year because we feel really confident in our skills,” said senior Mary Grace Kelly, who was named the MAC tournament MVP. “I think it helps that we’ve played against SEC-level teams this year. The Spartans shot 10 of 15 in the second quarter after a 3-of-9 showing in first. They out rebounded the Hubs, 15-1, in the second. They were 3 of 5 on 3-pointers. And while they did commit five turnovers, none of them led to points after seven first-quarter turnovers led to six Rochelle points.

“We played really well the second quarter,” Picolotti said. “We got in a good rhythm offensively. Our effort was spectacular.”

Mizgalski scored 13 points, tied for team-high, and was 2 of 4 from long range. Ty Sulaver – making his first

start of the year – also scored 13 and tied with teammate Connor Weckerly with a game-high seven rebounds.

Keyshawn Stallworth, despite playing limited minutes with foul trouble, came off the bench to shoot 5 of 7 for 10 points, five rebounds and two steals.

“When somebody makes a good play, everybody starts getting more confident,” Mizgalski said. “Then someone else makes a good play and it gets rolling. I think it just starts with one good play at a time and that leads to what you saw in the second quarter.”

Griffith scored a game-high 19 points for the Hubs, including two 3-pointers in the final minute.

With the win, the Spartans take third in their home tournament, although they’ve only been playing with a full contingent of players for two games.

“It’s early in the season and bad things happen,” Picolotti said. “But in the end we had a couple more points than they did, and that’s what we want for the outcome.”

G-K loses lead, 2 players ejected in loss

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Genoa-Kingston had its chances but was unable to close out a physical game against South Elgin on Saturday night. The Cogs lost the battle for fifth place in the Leland G. Strombom Holiday Tournament against South Elgin, 57-56.

After the teams battled to a 5252 tie to send the game to overtime, the game took a sharp turn.

The overtime period quickly became physical and chippy when the situation hit a boiling point resulting in a near brawl.

A hard foul was called in the paint, and two players from each team were ejected with minutes to go. The players ejected were G-K’s Zach Miller and Michael Trzynka and South Elgin’s Derek Baker and Mohammed Rahman.

A reach-in foul put South Elgin at the line in a tie game with 2.6 seconds left in overtime that ultimately sealed the Cogs’ fate.

“I’m proud of the fact that we played as hard as we could

tonight,” G-K coach Corey Jenkins said. “Nobody can doubt the effort our guys give. There are things we need to clean up to make us better. We just have to learn to play together better.

We have three sophomores in the top seven of our team, so we just have to figure that out, but I like the way the sophomores played in the tournament for us.”

The Cogs (1-3) looked like the better team early and held a 16-9 lead near the midway point of the second quarter against the Storm (2-2), but were unable to pull away.

G-K took a 24-17 lead into the locker room after Justin McNeal scored eight of his 18 points in the second quarter. McNeal and Griffen Hansen combined to score 20 of the Cogs’ 24 points in the first half. McNeal was the leading scorer for the Cogs.

After halftime, the Storm looked like a different team. They quickly tied the game at 26, as the Cogs started the half battling turnovers, much as the Storm had started the game. South El-

gin held a 41-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

A crucial point in the quarter came after South Elgin’s Latrell Lamarca was fouled and sent to the free-throw line for three shots to give the Storm a one-point lead – their first of the night. They were led by Logan Atkins who led all scorers with 19 points.

“It was the fourth game of the tournament, and it was nice to see us battle back and get the win tonight,” Storm coach Brett Johnson said. “With what was left after the ejections, there was great composure and team play out there from our guys.”

SYCAMORE – There wasn’t a facet of the game the Sycamore boys basketball team didn’t dominate in the second quarter Saturday against Rochelle in the third-place game of the Leland G. Strombom Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament.

It turned out to be just enough to hold on for a 55-53 win against the Hubs.

“If you told me we’d go 3-1 in the tournament with what our situation was with football making a run, I’d be very pleased with it,” coach Ryan Picolotti said. “So I am very pleased with it.”

Sycamore (3-1) outscored the Hubs 23-2 in the second quarter and was outscored the other three, including 23-12 in the fourth. The Spartans shot 4 of 9 from the free-throw line in the final quarter, allowing the Hubs (2-2) to get within two with the ball with 22.6 seconds left after a steal by Matt Albers.

But Rochelle was called for an over-

and-back violation, then Jack Mizgalski hit one of his two free-throw attempts to push the lead to 54-51. Kyle Seebach hit a shot for the Hubs with six seconds left, then sent Austin Mereness to the line with 0.6 seconds left. He made one of two, and a full-court heave by the Hubs was off target to seal the Sycamore win.

Mizgalski said the Spartans were getting the players to the line that they wanted to, but were unable to connect on the free throws.

“That’s exactly what we wanted, and sometimes it doesn’t work out the way you want it to,” Mizgalski said.

“We’ll take that any day, and more likely than not we’ll be hitting those free throws and the game will be a lot different.”

Picolotti agreed with his senior guard.

“We got the guys we wanted there, but as we get more confident down the road, we’ll knock them down,” Picolotti said. “So it was a real nice win for the guys. I’m real proud of them.”

Fourth-quarter Barkley: In a pass-heavy fourth, Barkley almost rallied the Bears. He completed 18-of-33 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns in the quarter. The 33 pass attempts tied Steve DeBerg for second-most throws in a quarter all-time. Barkley had a 94.3 rating in the quarter, which would have been much higher were it not for several key drops.

Feeding Howard: A mainstay in this section each week, Jordan Howard’s outstanding rookie season continues. He had 18 carries for 84 yards, averaging 4.7 yards a touch. He also had 43 receiving yards on three receptions.

Containing Murray: The Titans’ lead back was held to 2.5 yards a pop on his 17 carries, finishing with only 43 yards and a long of 10 yards. Murray was effective as a receiver with five catches for 41 yards.

Red-zone offense: The Bears were 3 for 6 in the red zone, including two Barkley interceptions and then the final drive, which resulted in four incomplete passes (including two drops). Those three possessions not only ended without a touchdown, but the Bears left the red zone without any points, same as their first drive, which got to Tennessee’s 33-yard line before they turned it over on downs.

Drops: It was a brutal day for the hands of the Bears’ receivers, as they couldn’t hang on to Barkley passes throughout the afternoon. No drop was more crucial than Josh Bellamy’s, when he was wide open in the end zone to tie the score in final minute. Deonte Thompson couldn’t snag Barkley’s pass on fourth-and-goal, either.

Barkley’s second pick: A surprise onside-kick recovery gave the Bears life to open the second half and they drove to the Titans’ 5-yard line and faced a third-and-goal. Barkley was flushed out of the pocket and thought Cameron Meredith had enough depth to float it to the back of the end zone, but Da’Norris Searcy picked off the pass, leaving the Bears empty-handed.

Goldman’s stop: The Titans attempted a shovel pass to Murray on third-and-2 with 2:10 left in the game. The nose tackle, returning to the lineup after missing last week’s game with an ankle injury, showed quite the agility and recognition to stop Murray short of the first, giving the offense a chance.

Bellamy’s drop: A miraculous comeback was about to be complete, as Bellamy stood in the end zone without a Titans DB in sight with 47 seconds left and the Bears down by six. Barkley made the pass, but Bellamy dropped it. Three plays (and another drop) later, and the rally ended, dropping the Bears to 2-9.

difference between what Barkley did and who Marcus Mariota is for the Titans.

And no one is saying Barkley is playing well enough yet to prolong Jay Cutler’s absence. It was only one game against a mediocre defense.

If anything, Barkley’s success speaks to his coaching. Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains’ play-calling has warranted criticism, but he and quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone got enough out of Barkley – who was throwing to reserves – to beat the Titans.

“I thought Dowell called a [heck] of a game,” Barkley said.

That does mean something. Coaches are evaluated, too.

Loggains and Ragone also managed to get a 98.0 passer rating out of journeyman Brian Hoyer, who didn’t make many big plays in his five starts, but still fit the efficient mold that Fox covets.

As for Barkley, it helped that the Titans’ secondary was soft in its coverage after Mariota (15 for 23, 226 yards, two touchdowns, 126.4 passer rating) staked

them to a big lead.

Barkley was able to overcome a rough first half and his two bad interceptions to find a rhythm. It helped to push the tempo, too.

“I was seeing everything clean,” said Barkley, who was 18 for 33 in the fourth quarter.

General manager Ryan Pace likes Barkley, too.

And that means everything.

Barkley’s success Sunday or beyond won’t preclude Pace from drafting a quarterback early on in this year’s draft. But Pace never saw Barkley as the punch line that he had seemingly become after going from a prized high school recruit for Southern California to a fourth-round pick of the Eagles in 2013 to roster fodder.

Barkley nearly rewarded Pace’s belief in him with a dramatic win.

“Just moving on from here, knowing that we can win, that we have guys on this team that can win games, it’s just making sure we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot,” Barkley said. “That’s the goal from here on out.”

This season, the Huskies have played against three teams in the NCAA tournament field – including Miami. They lost in straight sets to No. 8-seed Washington (26-4) – which won the Pac-12 – and Hawaii (22-5) at the Outrigger Resorts Challenge in Honolulu in the third week of the season.

“That’s why Ray sets us up with a tough early schedule, because that will help us out here,” Radtke said. “We’ve played top 25 teams multiple times this year and the past year, so we know their style, we know how we can beat them. It’s an advantage for us.”

For the Huskies, it’s the first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2011, in which they lost in four to Miami (Florida). Although none of the current players was on that team, Gooden said the experience was a positive one for him in terms of learning how to handle the pomp and circumstance of the biggest tournament of the season.

“I’m praying that I handle it better than I did back then,” Gooden said.

“You didn’t know what you didn’t know.

There were a lot of things that I wish I would have done better. Just handling it, not enjoying the experience, not going, ‘We’ve the right to do it, so let’s go out and do our best.’ As opposed to putting pressure on to perform.”

CHICAGO – To play hero, all Bears quarterback Matt Barkley had to do was deliver one more good throw from the 7-yard line in the final 47 seconds.

And he did.

Titans cornerback Perrish Cox slipped, leaving receiver Josh Bellamy uncovered. And Barkley hit Bellamy with a pass literally in his No. 11.

“I figured that we had a chance to score,” Barkley said.

But the Bears didn’t. The Titans won, 27-21, Sunday at Soldier Field. It was a horrendous drop by Bellamy on a day full of them for the Bears’ receivers.

On fourth down, receiver Deonte Thompson failed to make a sliding catch in the end zone – even though Barkley’s pass hit him in the chest – to end the Bears’ dramatic comeback attempt.

But let’s be honest: Barkley won, and his team didn’t.

It was surreal to see Barkley – a four-year veteran who was signed to the practice squad Sept. 5 and who was

making his first career start – in that moment in the first place. It was his play that inspired the comeback. He was the one who played well enough to win.

“I know who I am as a quarterback, and I know what I’m capable of,” said Barkley, who was 28 for 54 for 316 yards and three touchdowns.

“Even though we lost, it’s encouraging at the same time to see how these guys fought and how they really banded together to play for each other.”

Barkley said the right things afterward. He praised his protection for his sack-free day and didn’t fault any receiver who had a case of the drops.

On the field, it was apparent Barkley’s teammates felt the spark that he provided. They literally jumped about on the sideline as Barkley cut into the Titans’ 20-point lead in the fourth quarter.

“For the guy’s first start with us, it was pretty good,” coach John Fox said.

But what does it all mean?

No one is anointing Barkley the Bears’ next quarterback. There is a big

Lifestyle changes help GERD Note to readers: This column ran originally in December 2014.

Dear Dr. K: For years I’ve been taking a PPI twice a day for heartburn. My doctor wants me to cut back, or stop altogether. But the idea frightens me. Do you think it’s possible?

Dear Reader: To anyone tormented by frequent heartburn, not taking your daily tablet – or tablets – of omeprazole (Prilosec) or lansoprazole (Prevacid) might seem like a scary idea. These and similar drugs, known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), are the foundation of treatment for heartburn, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

GERD occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. PPIs work by shutting down the acid-producing “pumps” in the stomach. They sharply reduce acid secretion, and therefore the irritation it causes when stomach contents back up into the esophagus.

A number of my patients whose GERD was tamed by PPIs, and now have no symptoms, have been able to successfully taper off of them. This is more likely if they also make the lifestyle changes that reduce the symptoms of GERD. Those include: • Lose weight. Being overweight is the leading cause of reflux.

• Avoid eating large meals. Instead, eat more frequent, smaller meals.

• Avoid eating two to three hours before your normal bedtime.

• Sleep with your upper body above stomach level by elevating the head of the bed slightly on blocks or by using a wedgeshaped cushion. This reduces pressure on the opening between the upper stomach and base of the throat. Just propping up your head with pillows won’t work.

• Avoid certain foods that can trigger heartburn. They include chocolate, caf-

feine, alcohol, acidic foods, spicy foods or fatty foods. Try cutting them out for a while to see if it makes a difference.

• Completely avoid foods with mint.

Mint may loosen the passageway from the stomach to the esophagus and allow acidic material to back up into the esophagus and throat.

What’s the problem with remaining on the PPIs indefinitely? There is some evidence long-term use may increase your risk of developing a type of pneumonia called aspiration pneumonia, and a potentially serious intestinal infection with the bacteria called C. difficile. It also may cause you not to absorb enough calcium, magnesium, vitamin B12 or iron.

To taper down on your PPI, start by gradually reducing the dose and frequency until you are taking the lowest dose once a day. Then, gradually replace the PPI with an H2 blocker, an acid-reducing drug. Examples include cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), famotidine (Pepcid) and nizatidine (Axid). Switching to an H2 blocker may help you stop taking a PPI. I don’t think we have solid evidence of serious side effects from long-term use of H2 blockers. The evidence of adverse effects from long-term use of PPIs is somewhat stronger. But suppose you’ve been free of GERD symptoms for several months on a PPI. If you’re committed to lifestyle changes, it’s worth talking with your doctor about how to gradually taper off your PPI.

Today’s deal has elements of that, but also three and one are relevant -why? South is in three notrump. West leads his fourth-highest heart, and East puts up the king. What should declarer do?

South’s three-notrump rebid shows some 18-20 high-card points, at least six diamonds, in principle stoppers in the two unbid suits and often a singleton in responder’s suit.

(It is a hand too strong for one diamond - one spade - three diamonds.)

South apparently starts with eight top tricks: four spades, two hearts (given trick one) and two diamonds.

He can also establish three or four more diamond winners. But to collect all of those spade tricks, how does declarer get into the dummy?

The temptation is to cash the top diamonds and assume that the queen will drop, which it is supposed to do 58 percent of the time. Note, though, that if declarer can win six diamond tricks, he has nine tricks via one spade, two hearts and six diamonds.

But just in case the diamond queen will not drop, South should be willing to sacrifice one trick to get the three spade winners in return.

After winning trick one and cashing the spade ace, declarer should lead his diamond 10 or nine. If East ducks, South has six diamond tricks.

If East wins, the diamond jack is a dummy entry.
