Return of hated holiday tunes It is time, as my 3-year-old daughter would say, to “start Christmasing.”

Regardless of your level of holiday cheer, there are certain things that are inescapable, including holiday tunes that simply refuse to go away.

What we need is a solid list, something to present to the program directors at all-Christmas radio stations, and the people who create the piped-in playlists at department stores and grocers, to let them know that we the people have grown tired of these tunes.

Here are my suggestions for a no-play list, most of which I first presented in 2014 and present to you like warmed-over Thanksgiving leftovers (although I’ve dropped the awful “The Christmas Shoes” from the list because I haven’t heard it since the last writing.) Your suggestions are welcome, even needed.

1. “Santa Baby” – Whether it’s Eartha Kitt’s 1953 version or Madonna’s 1987 rendition, this smarmy appeal for extravagant gifts reminds me of what I imagine a mobster’s girlfriend would be like. So there’s another reason not to get involved in organized crime.

2. “It’s Cold Outside” – If you pay attention to the lyrics, this song’s actually kind of creepy. A guy’s trying to persuade his lady friend to stay the night, in part by plying her with booze. The “say, what’s in this drink?” line probably sounded a lot more innocent when it was first recorded in 1949

by Margaret Whiting and Johnny Mercer, before we’d heard of roofies or those allegations against Bill Cosby.

3. “Last Christmas” – This song, written

by George Michael and recorded by Wham! in 1984 is an earworm, unfortunately. You gave your heart to someone last Christmas and they gave it away the very next day?

Man, that’s cold. Now you’ve had a whole year to get over it, apparently you’ve found “someone special, special,” and you’re still hung up? Move on, George.

4. “Do They Know its Christmas?” – This 1984 collaboration by artists including Michael, Boy George, Bono, Sting and Simon LeBon has some of the darkest imagery of any holiday tune out there. Christmas bells are “clanging chimes of doom” in a “world of dread and fear” whose only running water is the “bitter sting of tears.”

EDITOR’S NOTE Eric Olson This song was recorded to aid famine victims in Ethiopia, and the lyrics tell us that Africa – the whole continent of more than 1 billion people – is a terrible place where there won’t be snow this Christmastime and nothing ever grows.

“Do they know it’s Christmastime at all?” the song asks. I guess it depends on whether anyone in Africa has a calendar.

Still, the video is a great flashback to the ’80s.

5. Mannheim Steamroller. The only group to make the list because their catalog all sounds basically the same. I admit to occasionally turning the radio up when a Steamroller song comes on, mostly because my wife hates them. This vaguely festive white noise is the music that plays when you get stuck in an elevator on Christmas Eve. 6. “Wonderful Christmastime” – Sir Paul McCartney’s saccharine, synthesized 1986 ballad seems to be about getting tipsy at a holiday party as “the choir of children sings their song.” As the synthesizer line bounces around in your eardrums, they sing these lyrics: “Ding dong, ding dong Ding dong, ding ooo Ooo ooo toot toot toot toot toot toot.”

Let’s simply retire this one.

7. The Christmas Song – The Chipmunks. No one would consider this a good song if they hadn’t been forced to listen to it at Christmas every year since 1958. It is a holiday tradition every bit as loved as fruitcake.

Here’s hoping all of you enjoy the holiday season, and remember: If you give your heart to anyone, make sure it’s someone “special, special.”

Worker uncovers accidentally discarded box of mementos in landfill

browland@shawmedia.com GENOA – Once it’s in the garbage truck, it’s gone.

At least, that’s what Waste Management DeKalb worker Chris Hampel had been telling people for the 26 years he’d worked for the Houston-based company. And that’s what he told Bonnie Fisher of Genoa when she stopped his truck Nov. 15.

Fisher had been driving around Genoa looking for the truck after learning her husband accidentally had discarded a box full of her 91-year-old father’s mementos, including his baby book and items from his service in the U.S. Army during World War II. “There were many cool things in this box. Lots of pictures, a letter written home, certificates from the Army,” Fisher said. “There were also other things ... such as Valentine cards he made for his grandmother [when] he was maybe 10. So they are 81 years old.

There was a cool cookbook he made out of wood for his mom when he was a kid, also there was his baby book. Still in [its] original box, it is 91 years old.”

When Fisher found the garbage truck, she pulled in front of it and asked Hampel for help.

“She was shaking, almost crying,” Hampel said. “I told her that if it was in the truck, it was pretty much gone.”

Hampel told Fisher he’d look for it when he got to the landfill, but said finding it amid the eight tons of garbage in the truck was a long shot.

“It’s rare to find something,” he said. “I told her it is like winning the lottery.”

Hampel felt bad for Fisher. If Hampel’s father, who served in the Air Force, had lost something like that, he’d want to get it back. He cut his

In the meantime, Fisher was losing hope.

Fisher’s mother, Betty Ball, died Sept. 2. Fisher and her husband, Steve, have been working to move her father, Ray Ball, from his home in Tennessee to a place in Genoa to be near family.

On Nov. 3, Fisher and her friend, Debby Karl, went to Greeneville, Tennessee, to help Fisher’s father pack and prepare his house to be listed for sale.

During the visit, Ball had discovered the box in his basement. He asked his daughter to bring it back with her instead of packing it in with the rest of his stuff on a U-Haul truck. When Fisher got home with the box, she put it in the garage.

“Normally, I would have put it in my basement, but my plan was to take it over to [my father’s] house in town,” Fisher said. “In the meantime, I told my husband what this box is in the garage, so he would know.”

Four days after Veterans Day, “something told me to go to the garage and look for that box,” Fisher said. “I swear it was my mom telling me.”

The box was gone.

She called Steve to find out what happened. She could hear her husband’s voice sink. He had thought she wanted him to throw it out.

“I called my friend Debby to see if she remembered what all was in the box, as she was there in Tennessee when we went through it. That’s when she reminded me of his baby book and then I cried all over again,” Fisher said. “She tried to explain to me that everything in that box was ‘material’ things, and that I was blessed that I A destroyed cardboard box is shown on Tuesday. Local store owners prepare for Small Business Saturday

DeKALB – For local business owners, Small Business Saturday means a chance to reach more customers and share what they have to offer with the community.

While major retailers take in most of the initial Black Friday rush, consumers are encouraged to shop locally at small businesses the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The tradition was founded in 2010 by American Express.

Roseanne Para, co-owner of Sweet Earth, 341 W. State St., said Small Business Saturday is a big deal for downtown Sycamore, and it gives people a feel for the charm of small businesses.

“The big advantage is the customer

service,” she said. “Most business owners around here I’ve known for 10 to 20 years, and they’re all about pleasing the customers and making the customers happy.”

She said she would compare the crowd on Small Business Saturday to a Pumpkin Festival day or Moonlight Madness shopping.

Sweet Earth, a store for gifts, jewelry and engraving, will have students from Sycamore High School’s art club selling handmade holiday bags and crafts from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Para said.

Becky Ryan, owner of Becky Beck’s Jewelry Store, 303 E. Hillcrest Drive in DeKalb, said her store has not seen much of a rush for Small Business Saturday in the past, likely because it is not located downtown.

Ryan said that although her store may be off people’s radars for Small Business Saturday, she makes a point to thank her customers year-round for shopping locally.

“I think people in DeKalb try to shop local as much as possible, and I appreciate that,” she said.

Marcia Elliott, co-owner of Made Just For You, 338 W. State St. in Sycamore, said many of her crafters live in DeKalb and Sycamore, and shopping at small businesses is a way to support local people.

“People come help us out and keep us in business so we can continue to help the community,” Elliott said.

Bobbi Hayes, co-owner of Barb City Bagels, 122 S. First St., said she expects a busy Saturday as usual for her store,

but she sees Small Business Saturday as a way to remind people of what’s available in DeKalb besides the big-box stores.

“What I would love to see is every day is small business day,” Hayes said.

“Small businesses are what make the community run well.”

Hayes said she would encourage people beyond the holiday season to think of small businesses, many of which do their part to help out local schools and charities.

“When you are giving to a small business, you are not just providing a bottom line for a large corporation, you are supporting jobs, helping us pay salaries,” she said. “It’s an investment in the community that makes it grow stronger.”

OBITUARIES FRANCIS J. KROLAK

Coral Lea (née Hock) Machias died Wednesday Nov 23, 2016, at the age of 83 after a long battle with Alzheimers.

Coral was born Oct. 4, 1933 in Joliet IL to Orpha Francis J. Krolak, 95 of Edgerton, Wisconsin, formerly (Farmer) and Joseph Hock. She graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1951. She married of LaSalle, died November John Machias in 1953 and they made their home 21, 2016. in Aurora before opting for the country life in Graveside services will be Nottingham Woods, Elburn. Lynn A. Ross, 64, of Kingston died Tuesday,

November 22, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born July 26, 1952 in Elgin to Earl and Etheleen (Andrus) Ross. He was employed at Fox River Waste Reclamation for over 25 years. He retired from “The District” in 2014.

Lynn was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, a lover of nature, all animals and deer antlers. He will be remembered for his great stories, witty sense of humor and being a dear friend and family man.

“You don’t have to own hundreds or thousands of acres to start a profitable agricultural enterprise,” Larson added. “We developed these workshops to help people realize the possibilities that a few acres can provide.”

The Putting Small Acres to Work program will be Dec. 3 at the NIU Rockford Meeting and Conference Center at 8500 E. State St., Rockford, just a mile east of Interstate 90. The registration desk will open at 8:30 a.m., and the program will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be general sessions on permaculture and farm-scale energy production, as well as numerous breakout sessions on both plant and animal topics, including tomatoes and peppers, microgreens, shiitake mushrooms, raising livestock for fiber, meat goat production, and controlling weeds in pastures. Outreach professionals from the University of Illinois Extension and a local farmer will provide the expertise.

People with rural property have a wide variety of uses for it. Some like a large manicured lawn, others grow native fobs and prairie grasses, still others just need a place for their toys.

“It’s great that so many people are able to enjoy their own place in the country nowadays; it’s nice to get back to the land and have the space to spread out a little,” said Andy Larson, a food systems and small farms educator with the University of Illinois Extension. “However, there are quite a few rural residents and acreage owners who have some ground they are not exactly sure what to do with, and they’d like to put that idle or underutilized land to more productive use, especially food production.”

Putting Small Acres to Work is a program designed to help people do that. Many who have long dreamed about getting into farming are starting to consider a small acreage as their springboard into agriculture.

The number of small-acreage farms included in the Census of Agriculture has increased dramatically in the past decade. Although many of the people farming on 5, 10 or 20 acres aren’t necessarily doing so as their primary source of income, they still are serious about having a legitimate farm business, or at least a hobby that can pay for itself.

Larson and his family are no exception.

“When my wife and I moved onto our acreage, we had three acres of unimproved grass pasture with decent fence and a lot of potential,” he said. “After some brainstorming and budget-building, we decided to start a flock of free-range chickens that rotationally graze a pasture resource that might have otherwise gone to waste. Now my wife is in the egg business. We’re glad to see our land being used effectively, and a little supplemental income is nice, too.”

DeKalb in solid financial shape for ’17 The DeKalb City Council and Finance Advisory Committee have met over the past several weeks. The topics have included the city’s financial policies, tax levy and fiscal 2017 budgeted revenue and expenditures.

The city is financially sound and projects ending the current year with a general fund balance within the fund policy of 25 percent in reserve fund balance. The council and advisory committee members have approved the goals of a balanced budget and maintaining a 25 percent general fund reserve for fiscal 2017.

The City Council has realigned the city’s fiscal year with the calendar year. This allows the property tax levy decision to be made with a new year’s budget closely in view.

The tax levy has been set at the same rate as last year. With the increase in equalized assessed valuation of property in the city, the property tax revenue is projected to increase 5.92 percent. The property tax levy is used to fully fund fire and police pen-

“She was right, and she said maybe I shouldn’t even tell him, that maybe he would never ask about that box. So I decided I wouldn’t tell him unless he asked someday. My heart was sick.”

At the landfill, Hempel, with help from DeKalb County’s landfill operator, found a safe place to dump the load to search for the items. He thought that based on the route, the box would be in the middle of the load. It was, but it had broken open. Some of the contents had spilled out. Hampel gathered everything he could find and put it back in the box. He then drove to Fisher’s home.

At first, Fisher said she thought it was another Waste Management truck collecting recyclables. But when the driver got out, she realized it was Hampel and he had found the box.

“I freaked out and went running out there,” she said.

“She was happier than ever,” Hampel said.

Fisher tried to repay the kindness with cash, but Hampel declined. So,

Fisher gave him a hug.

“Chris went above and beyond,” Fisher said. “He could have just forgot all about it and finished his workday. I can never thank him enough.”

The miscommunication with her husband on the day before the couple’s 25th wedding anniversary nearly was forgotten.

Fisher bought a new Rubbermaid box for her father’s mementos. She labeled it “Dad’s army box,” “keep,” and “this means you Steve.”

Ray Ball doesn’t yet know that his keepsakes nearly ended up in a landfill.

Fisher said she plans to tell him the story in person when he arrives in three weeks.

“He has a hard time hearing on the phone, so I am waiting to tell him when he gets here in three weeks,” Fisher said. “He can read this story and also see that all his things survived thanks to Chris Hampel.”

DeKALB – Wreaths of red lightbulbs are once again on display at area fire stations, including at the DeKalb Fire Department, as part of an effort to encourage fire safety during the holiday season.

All three DeKalb fire stations were adorned with wreaths on Thanksgiving as part of the annual Red Wreath Program.

Each time the department responds to an emergency fire incident related to the holiday season, one of the red lightbulbs on the wreaths will be replaced with a white one.

The goal is to “keep the wreaths red” by practicing fire safety.

The department offers tips to minimize fire hazards during the holidays, including: • Limit extension cord use and make sure cords aren’t cracked or split.

• Keep electrical wiring out of

walkways and areas where it can become pinched or worn.

• Read the packaging on holiday lights to make sure they do not overload electrical circuits.

• Check electrical wiring often for possible problems.

• Do not place candles near combustible decorations or leave burning candles unattended.

The department will take down the wreaths and release a report of emergency activity during the holiday season after Jan. 1.

Last year, no fire incidents related to the holiday season were reported in DeKalb during the 37 days the wreaths were displayed. Meanwhile, the department responded to 552 requests for emergency services, including 11 fires, according to a fire department news release.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – A Chicago police officer shot and killed a gunman who had killed one person and injured another early Friday, in the second fatal shooting involving the city’s police in just more than 24 hours.

The incident followed an unrelated shooting late Wednesday in which a sergeant responding to a call of a battery in progress on the city’s South Side shot and killed a 19-year-old man during a foot chase. Police said the man pointed a gun at the sergeant, but a search failed to uncover a weapon and relatives of the dead teenager are disputing police statements that he

SIU student dies in house fire in Carbondale

CARBONDALE – Authorities said a Southern Illinois University student died in a devastating house fire in Carbondale.

The Carbondale Southern Illinoisan said an autopsy will be performed and the student’s name has not yet been released. Firefighters found the body while searching the two-story home during the Wednesday morning fire.

The Carbondale Fire Department, the Carbondale Police Department and Illinois State Police are conducting the investigation with help from the university.

Carbondale police have said there is nothing to suggest foul play is involved.

Suburb pays $35K for crash involving deputy chief

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – A Chicago suburb has agreed to pay $35,000 to a woman whose car was rear-ended by a deputy police chief.

The Arlington Heights Daily Herald said Deputy Chief Miguel Hernandez

was armed.

An autopsy determined he died from a gunshot wound to the back, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s daily case ledger, which provided no details. Authorities haven’t identified the man, but relatives said it was Kajuan Raye of Dolton.

Raye’s cousin, Ahkeya White, said Raye was trying to figure out what he wanted to do and that he’ll be greatly missed.

“There was no gun,” White told the Chicago Tribune. “Tears are flowing and we are praying.”

Raye’s mother said she doesn’t know whether her son was armed. But 38-year-old Karonisha Ramsey told

A determined and peaceful crowd rallied Friday morning near the city’s historic Old Water Tower. A similar protest occurred a year ago after the release of a video showing a white police officer shooting black teen Laquan McDonald.

Police say robbers forcing ATM withdrawals

CHICAGO – Chicago police are warning people about robberies where the victims are being forced to withdraw money from ATMs. Police said five robberies have been reported in November in the Garfield Park and Humboldt Park neighborhoods.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that a group of men approaches the victims and threatens them with a weapon before demanding money or belongings.

In some cases the victims are forced to withdraw money from an ATM. Police said the men wore masks in one of the robberies.

Tinley Park sued over housing development

TINLEY PARK – The U.S. Justice Department is suing the village of Tinley Park over allegations that officials there blocked construction of a low-income apartment complex amid “race-based community opposition.”

The lawsuit filed Wednesday accuses the village trustees of tabling consideration of the project by the Buckeye Community Hope Foundation in February even though it met applicable building requirements. The lawsuit said the village’s “actions were taken in response to community opposition based on

U of I strengthening ties with Mexico

URBANA – The University of Illinois is strengthening its ties with Mexico through new academic and research partnerships.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported that university President Tim Killeen signed agreements during a trip to Mexico last week. He said they are part of the university’s efforts to diversify international student enrollment and increase its global impact.

One agreement would send doctoral students funded by the Mexican government to the system’s three universities.

In a separate partnership, researchers in Illinois will team with the Department of Health in Mexico City to study diabetes and obesity. Both are major health problems in Mexico.

Oil pipeline: Trump’s stock in company raises concern

WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump holds stock in the company building the disputed Dakota Access oil pipeline, and pipeline opponents warn that Trump’s investments could affect any decision he makes on the $3.8 billion project as president.

Concern about Trump’s possible conflicts comes amid protests that unfold daily along the proposed pipe- Donald line route. The dispute Trump over the route has intensified in recent weeks, with total arrests since August rising to 528. A recent clash near the main protest camp in North Dakota left a police officer and several protesters injured.

Trump’s most recent federal disclosure forms, filed in May, show he owned between $15,000 and $50,000 in stock in Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners. That’s down from between $500,000 and $1 million a year earlier.

Trump also owns between $100,000 and $250,000 in Phillips 66, which has a one-quarter share of Dakota Access.

While Trump’s stake in the pipeline company is modest compared with his other assets, ethics experts say it’s among dozens of potential conflicts that could be resolved by placing his investments in a blind trust, a step Trump has resisted.

The Obama administration said this month it wants more study and tribal input before deciding whether to allow the partially built pipeline to cross under a Missouri River reservoir in North Dakota.

The 1,200-mile pipeline would carry oil across four states to a shipping point in Illinois. The project has been held up while the Army Corps of Engineers consults with the Standing Rock Sioux, who believe the project could harm the tribe’s drinking water and Native American cultural sites.

“Trump’s investments in the pipeline business threaten to undercut faith in this process – which was already frayed – by interjecting his own financial well-being into a much bigger decision,” said Sharon Buccino, director of the land and wildlife program at the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental group.

NEW YORK – Even people who said they’d already done their shopping online came out for Black Friday to spend time with family members or just for the fun of looking.

But it’s those very shoppers retailers are trying to keep as loyal customers, working to improve their own online sites and letting people pick up purchases in the store as the retailers try to fend off the Amazon juggernaut. Even as retailers kick off the shopping season earlier each year, the day after Thanksgiving is still one of the busiest sales days of the year. It’s also becoming an American export to other countries.

Shoppers were on the hunt for deals and were at the stores for entertainment Friday. Store executives said they see customers doing more research online before they go shop. That can mean more browsers turn into buyers, but also that they are visiting fewer stores in person.

“If I’ve seen it on the internet and I find a better deal than I saw on the internet, I’ll buy it,” said Dianna Ramirez, who was looking for a television at the Crossgates Mall in suburban Albany, New York.

Shamika Malloy of Albany was also there shopping for her four teenage children. Her must-have item a laptop for a daughter in college. Malloy said she hadn’t yet shopped online but usually does so.

“It’s better than coming in the store.

can get it delivered right to the house for free. Can’t beat that.” But she said she wouldn’t shop at as many places as last year. “Whoever’s got the best deals, that’s where I go.”

This weekend is crucial to set the tone for the holiday season. Around 137 million people plan to or are considering doing their shopping during the Thanksgiving weekend, according to a survey conducted for the National Retail Federation trade group. That includes online and store shopping.

The Black Friday mentality and marketing approach has even crossed the Atlantic and is shaping shopping habits in much of Britain. Many big box stores opened early Friday while others focused on cutting online prices or combining the two. Some Swiss stores that have started offering American-style “Black Friday” discounts online have seen their sites freeze, slow down or crash under a surge in traffic.

With the competition for customers so intense, many stores were open Thursday evening in what they hope will be a new holiday tradition. Retailers have also been spreading deals out more throughout the week which may have diluted the shopping.

“It was a really good start. But I have never seen Black Friday morning so calm,” said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at NPD Group, a market research firm, who visited malls on Long Island on Friday. He believes the weekend’s sales will likely rise from last year because shoppers did lots of buying, including pricey flat-screen TVs.

MOSUL, Iraq – The death toll from a car bombing south of Baghdad claimed by the Islamic State group rose to 73 on Friday, including about 40 Iranian pilgrims, as Iraqi forces fought house to house to dislodge the extremist group from the northern city of Mosul in a five-week-old campaign slowed down by stiff IS resistance and fears of massive civilian casualties.

At a weekend economic summit in Peru, leaders of Pacific Rim nations in Asia and the Americas made clear their support for the Trans-Pacific Partnership – with or without the U.S. But some also said they may throw in with a competing approach to free trade: the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, a trading bloc being assembled by the People’s Republic of China. Their statements underscore the geopolitical risks that the U.S. will take if it does not embrace the deal it helped negotiate with 11 other Pacific nations.

The TPP was always going to be a tough sell in Congress, as a growing number of Republicans have joined most Democrats in questioning the value of free-trade deals. But the pact became radioactive during the presidential campaign, as leading candidates from both major parties denounced it as a threat to American jobs and sovereignty.

President-elect Donald Trump said Monday that he would issue a notice of intent to withdraw the U.S. from as-yet unratified TPP on his first day in office, and later seek bilateral trade deals with some of its participants.

The concerns about lost jobs and decreased U.S. flexibility are valid, yet the right answer isn’t to pretend that globalization isn’t happening. It’s to push global competition in a direction that works for this country as well as its trading partners, while doing more to help American workers adapt to the new reality.

That process starts with deals such as the TPP, which requires other nations to live by labor, environmental and intellectual property regulations more like ours.

The free-trade pact China is pushing, however, doesn’t include such standards, and its adoption would encourage a multinational race to the bottom for wage and hour laws, emissions limits and other rules for commerce, making it even harder for U.S. workers to compete.

But there may be a way forward for Trump, despite his oft-stated opposition to the pact as a “bad deal.” Leaders of several TPP nations have indicated a willingness to tweak the TPP – the kind of renegotiation he has said he wants, although the changes ultimately may just be cosmetic. Rather than simply withdrawing from the pact, he should accept that invitation.

Trump must lead by example One reason 60 million voters elected Donald Trump is because he promised to change Washington’s culture of self-dealing, and if he wants to succeed he’s going to have to make a sacrifice and lead by example. Mr. Trump so far has indicated he will keep his business empire but turn over management to his children, and therein lies political danger.

Mr. Trump for decades has run the Trump Organization and during the campaign said that if he won the presidency, he’d turn over the keys to Donald Jr., Eric and Ivanka, all of whom now are serving on the Trump transition. A company spokesperson says the family business is “in the process of vetting various structures” and the ultimate arrangement “will comply with all applicable rules and regulations.”

Some of Mr. Trump’s lawyers have called the plan a “blind trust,” which past presidents have used to protect their assets from the ap-

pearance of conflicts-of-interest. But that set-up typically involves liquid assets such as bonds and stocks, not buildings or a branding empire. By law blind trusts are overseen by an independent manager, not family members.

The president is exempt from federal conflict-of-interest laws, but Mr. Trump’s plan already is hitting political turbulence.

Mr. Trump’s best option is to liquidate his stake in the company. Richard Painter and Norman Eisen, ethics lawyers for George W. Bush and President Barack Obama, respectively, have laid out a plan, which involves a leveraged buyout or an initial public offering.

Mr. Trump could put the cash proceeds in a true blind trust. The Trump children can keep the assets in their name, and he can transfer more to them as long as he pays a hefty gift tax. Finally, Mr. Trump should stipulate he and his children will have no communication about

family business matters.

The alternatives are fraught, perhaps even for the Trump Organization’s bottom line: Thanks to a Clinton Administration precedent, presidents can face litigation in private matters – so the company will become a supermagnet for lawsuits. Rudy Giuliani lamented on television divestment would put the Trump children “out of work,” but reorganizing the company may be better for business than unending scrutiny from the press. Progressive groups soon will be out of power, and they already are shouting the Trump family wants to profit from the presidency.

The political damage to a new administration could be extensive. If Mr. Trump doesn’t liquidate, he will be accused of a pecuniary motive any time he takes a policy position.

The presidential stakes are too high for Mr. Trump to let his family business become a daily political target.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Second-half surge lifts NIU

Huskies keep slim bowl hopes alive with 5th victory

sports@daily-chronicle.com KENT, Ohio – Behind a pair of touchdowns from senior running back Joel Bouagnon, Northern Illinois overcame a slow start to edge Kent State, 31-21, in what could amount to the Huskies’ season finale.

Entering halftime tied at 7, the Huskies (5-7, 5-3 Mid-American Conference West) outscored the Flashes (3-9, 2-6 MAC East), 24-14, in the second half to secure a victory that could catapult them to a bowl game appearance. If Friday’s game at Dix Stadium marked the final time NIU played this season, Bouagnon’s 133 yards rushing and redshirt freshman quarterback Daniel Santacaterina’s first career start highlighted the Huskies’ final game.

Both of Bouagnon’s scores came on consecutive drives early in the fourth quarter, the first of which lifted the Huskies to a 10-point lead. On the Huskies’ next possession, his two carries for 40 yards provided enough for NIU to jump to a 31-14 lead and capped a 17-0 run.

Meanwhile, Santacaterina finished 13-of-23 passing and scored on a 3-yard run the first quarter to give the Huskies a 7-0 advantage. He connected often with senior receiver Kenny Golladay, who finished with 91 yards and landed inches short of a touchdown. He left the game with an apparent arm/ shoulder injury after diving toward the end zone and slamming the ball into the turf, but Huskies coach Rod Carey couldn’t confirm his receiver’s status after the game. Instead, he offered high praise, tabbing Golladay as the best receiver he’s coached since his arrival four years ago.

“He got the ball thrown to him by four different quarterbacks this year and still had over 1,000 yards and is leading the conference in receptions,” Carey said. “I dare any other wide out in the conference to do that.”

The Huskies’ offense, for all its success in the second half, appeared largely disjointed in the game’s early going. After a 16-play, 93-yard drive capped by Santacaterina’s touchdown run in the first quarter, it turned the ball over twice and allowed promising possessions to sputter out. Santacater-

“We had two turnovers in the first half, and that really set the table for a close game,” Carey said. “I thought we got in and made some adjustments

Now, the Huskies await their fate to see whether their credentials are strong enough for a bowl game selection. Even after winning four of their last five and tallying a winning conference record, the Huskies still aren’t sure bets. They’ve played in a bowl game for eight consecutive seasons, and Friday marked the Huskies’ first regular-season finale in six years they had no chance to win the MAC West.

A chance to miss out on extra football after their regular-season finale is unchartered territory for Carey’s squad, but he offered optimism for the Huskies. The team played in six one-possession games this season and they lost by a touchdown differential or less in four of their seven losses.

“You’re probably about seven, eight, nine plays away from being where you like to be and normally are,” Carey said. “But those plays can wear on a team when you don’t make them, and they can maybe make you flinch. This team didn’t, and this staff didn’t. I think that bodes well for us going forward.”

The Phoenix (4-1) had their chance to win the game in the closing seconds of the first overtime, but a 3-point attempt by Steven Santa Ana, who was blanketed by Armstead, missed the rim as time expired.

“The play developed really quick,” Armstead said. “We knew they were going to have somebody come off (a screen) – most likely, my man. I just tried to lock in and give it a little extra.”

The Phoenix, who play in the Colonial Athletic Association, built the cushion in the second overtime after a 3-pointer by Tyler Seibring made it 79-72 with 2:28 remaining.

Elon came into the day averaging 26.3 3s a game and went 14 for 38 (36.8 percent) from behind the arc against the Huskies.

DeKALB – Northern Illinois senior guard Aaric Armstead and senior center Marin Maric used the same description after the Huskies’ 85-80 double-overtime loss to Elon – their third consecutive defeat.

Sulaver, Spartans top Cogs Kolberg, Football players Spartans suit up; G-K still misses top shooter looking to repeat

SYCAMORE – While the Sycamore boys basketball had a couple of its football-playing members return to the court Friday, Genoa-Kingston was without a pair of its multisport athletes in the final pool play game of the Leland G. Strombom Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament.

Ty Sulaver highlighted the returning Sycamore football players with a 12-point, six-rebound performance to help the Spartans to a 51-45 win against the Cogs, who were without their top shooter, Zach Miller.

Sulaver, the quarterback for the Spartans’ football team, said he didn’t know what to expect after being on the football field only six days ago.

“It was more than I thought, but I played through it and it was awesome,” he said.

Sulaver only had a couple of walkthroughs with the Spartans – his football season ended Nov. 19 in the Class 5A state semifinals with a loss to Vernon Hills. Keyshawn Stallworth, Donovan Smith and Jordan Tolzin also joined the Spartans (2-1), who will face Rochelle in the third-place game at 6 p.m. today.

The Cogs (1-2) will face South Elgin in the fifth-place game at 4:30 p.m. today, and expect to have seniors Luke Miller and Zach Miller in the lineup. Zach Miller was being honored before the Class 4A state championship football game in Champaign for making the coaches’ all-state team. His twin brother, Luke Miller, also went to “make it a family event,” coach Corey Jenkins said.

“Considering the circumstances, I think our guys battled through difficult circumstances,” Jenkins said.

“We played six guys tonight and missing both the Millers tonight, and Zach is the best shooter on our team. Missing him changes the way opponents can defend us.”

The Cogs were in command early, leading by as much as 15-8 late in the first quarter. Sulaver scored eight of the Spartans’ first 10 points.

The lead was 34-26 in the third when G-K scored eight straight to tie the score. The Cogs took the lead to start the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Griffin Hansen, but the next points came from a three-point play by Mizgalski, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Sycamore clung to a two-point lead late, got a stop with 1:26 left, and ran the clock down until Austin Mereness was fouled with 54.1 seconds left. He missed the front end of his 1-and-1 free-throw situation, but Sulaver got the rebound, and 13 seconds later, Mereness sunk both ends of a one-andone.

Ethan Heinrich got a steal on the next G-K possession and the Spartans took care of the game at the line in the closing seconds.

“We played really well,” Sulaver said. “It’s still early in the season.

We’re still getting guys back from football and stuff like that, but we just played together, and that’s what you got to do to get wins like this, just grind it out.”

Connor Weckerly scored six points and had 10 rebounds for the Spartans. Justin McNeal and Bailey Foley scored most of the Cogs’ points, with McNeal scoring 22 and Foley 12. Michael Trzynka and Klint Wewetzer each had seven rebounds as the Cogs were outrebounded, 4323.

“I though our effort was pretty good again,” Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti said. “I know defensively we still have to get a little better fundamentally, but I thought we did better in the second half. Offensively, we got some great shots that didn’t go in. But that’s the first part, being able to get those shots.”

Jenkins said he was proud of the team’s effort, particularly Wewetzer – another Cogs’ football player. The G-K football season ended two weeks ago in the quarterfinals to eventual state runner-up Johnsburg.

“Justin McNeal stepped up for us tonight, and I thought Klint Wewetzer put together some good minutes tonight,” Jenkins said. “The first two games he was coming off football and still in football mode. You saw him thinking basketball on the floor tonight, which was good.”

SYCAMORE – In 2015, the Sycamore girls bowling team won when it mattered in the regular season and early postseason. As the 2016 season approaches, the Spartans have every intention of repeating their success and then some.

The Spartans are coming off a season in which they went 7-0 in conference matchups and finished on top of the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference tournament. Their undefeated run continued into the postseason as they won the Oregon Regional, Alexis Kolberg in which senior Baylee Ricker earned the individual championship.

But the Spartans’ hot streak ended in the Dixon Sectional.

The Spartans graduated six seniors, but coach Andy Hampton does not see this season as a rebuilding one.

“I think a lot of people are looking at us in a different way in that we graduate a lot of seniors from the varsity squad from last year,” Hampton said.

“Our captain, Alexis Kolberg, is back, and we went to state a few years ago, and we won the regional last year. The girls know the success the program has had in the past, and they know it takes a lot of work, and they’re willing to put in that work. We do not consider this year as a rebuilding year, but more of a reloading year. We have every intentions of defending our conference championship.”

At the forefront of the 2016 squad is senior and reigning Daily Chronicle Girls Bowler of the Year, Kolberg, who said she has confidence in her team to repeat its success and defend its conference title.

“To repeat our success, we’re going to need to be confident,” Kolberg said.

The Kaneland girls basketball team won the IC Catholic Thanksgiving Tournament for the third year in a row, beating Evergreen Park, 59-30, Friday.

Morgan Weber had 25 points and eight rebounds for the Knights (4-0). Grace Ringel added 12 points.

“I have more concern about how we’re playing and what our approach is,” Biancalana said of DeKalb’s 2-2 start. “I think this tournament prepares us for our conference. We play three conference games in a row now in December, so it’ll prepare us. I like playing this type of competition.”

OSWEGO – DeKalb’s deep run in the Class 6A football playoffs to the semifinal round put an interesting twist on the Barbs’ basketball lineup, but DeKalb continued its evolution in Friday’s finale of the Hoops for Healing Tournament.

The Barbs (2-2) welcomed back its seven football players and made a run at Oswego East early, but a two-point halftime lead evaporated in the third quarter and the Barbs went on to lose, 47-33, to the Wolves.

Oswego East opened with a 7-0 run to start the game, but DeKalb chipped away at its deficit with a 3-pointer from Michael Mitchell (six points) and Dwight Wallace (six points, five rebounds) to tie the score at 9 at the end of the first quarter.

Mitchell hit another long-range shot in the second quarter, and Darvon Sisson completed a threepoint play to put DeKalb ahead, 23-17, with three minutes to play in the half.

Dear Dr. K: I hear and read so much advice about skin care, and I don’t know what’s true and what’s not. Can you address some common myths about skin care?

Dear Reader: You’re right to be skeptical. My patients often tell me they’ve heard about a way to keep their skin clear and healthy, and often it is simply not true. I’ll debunk some of the most common myths I hear: • The right skin cream can keep your skin looking young.

For reducing wrinkles, the treatment with the best evidence behind it is retinoic acid (as in Retin-A) that you apply to your skin. But the best ways to keep wrinkles at bay are using sunscreen and not smoking.

It’s unnecessary to keep your skin completely free of bacteria, and impossible to accomplish anyway. There is no evidence antibacterial soap cleans better than regular soap. In addition, it may promote bacteria resistant to antibiotics.

• Eating chocolate or oily foods causes oily

skin and acne.

There’s no evidence any specific food causes acne. An oily substance called sebum causes acne. It’s made and secreted by small glands beneath the skin.

• Tanning always is bad for you.

Spending too much time in the sun or in a tanning booth can increase skin cancer risk. Excessive tanning also can cause skin to wrinkle and age prematurely.

That is not a myth: It’s undeniably true.

I spent a lot of time on the beaches of

sunny Southern California when I was a kid, only rarely using suntan lotion. And I’ve had many skin cancers as a result – all cured, fortunately.

But developing a light or gradual tan through repeated, but careful, sun exposure isn’t dangerous. Just take appropriate precautions: Use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30, apply it thoroughly and reapply when necessary, and avoid peak sun exposure times (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).

• Tanning is good for you.

There’s no evidence tan people are healthier than paler people. Sun exposure does have a health benefit, though.

Sunlight activates vitamin D in the skin.

Vitamin D helps keep bones strong, and may well have other health benefits. But you can get the vitamin D you need from food and supplements. You don’t need to tan.

• The higher the SPF of your sunscreen, the better.

Above a certain level, a higher sun protection factor (SPF) has little added benefit. Using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is fine.

Keeping your skin healthy is important, no doubt. But beware of these myths, as they will only distract you from your goal.

North had no reason to believe that five clubs would be better. (Note that that contract goes down if East leads a heart, or cashes a high trump and shifts to a heart at trick two.)

South has six top tricks: three spades, one heart and two diamonds.

He will get a second heart winner, but must establish dummy’s clubs, which involves losing the lead twice.

He is in jeopardy.

A meek East would signal exuberantly with the heart 10 at trick one.

Then, after South played low, East would sit back and wait ... and wait ... and wait ... for partner to lead a second heart. Probably West would shift to a spade, but now South would get home with an overtrick.

A more commanding East will see that he is getting on lead twice in clubs. He will overtake the heart queen with the king and continue the suit should declarer duck. Now the contract goes down.

If you see how to defeat a contract, take command.
