Oh, those Norman Rockwell Thanksgivings

Most of us my age come from homes where Thanksgiving (and often Christmas) was celebrated the old-fashioned way: At grandpa and grandma’s house, or an aunt and uncle’s place, often in the country, where all the relations and in-laws gathered for a feast.

In my case, before Kay and I were married, we went to one side of the family every other year, or one at noon and the other for supper.

My Aunt Ann and Uncle George Cooper hosted the Schrader-Cooper dinner at their farmhouse near “New Leb” (between Genoa and Hampshire). Us kids got to meet all the cousins once or twice a year, played board games, explored the haymow and machine shed, then devoured turkey with all the trimmings and settled down to watch a football game or play in the basement. The men retired to the TV room and some fell asleep, while the women returned to the kitchen to clean up after the meal, then maybe play cards, crochet or knit.

When I was about 12, I had my first smoke on that holiday. One of my cousins pilfered a pack of Pall Malls from my uncle’s cupboard in the pantry, and we sneaked behind the barn to try them out. Guess I didn’t like them much, as I never became a smoker. Luckily we didn’t burn the barn down, as some kids did, playing with matches.

Then later in the day we drew names from a bowl, telling us who to buy a $5 or $10 gift for Christmas, when we all returned to repeat that tradition all over again.

On my mother’s side of the family our gathering was smaller since my grandfather Orval had passed away and Grandma Emma Stryker had moved in with my Aunt Harriet and Uncle Shelby at 345 Cedar St. in Waterman. But I still got to see aunts and uncles Everett and Marguerite Stryker and Roy and Myrtle Stryker, plus a few cousins – Roger and Barbara Stryker, Rusty and Dorothy Kleckner.

DeKALB COUNTY LIFE Barry Schrader nie, plus Mary Jo and Tommy, were generally there. No farm to wander, so we pretty much sat around listening to the adults gossip about friends and neighbors, who had passed away, or who had gotten married and had a baby.

Us kids did go outside if weather permitted, heading for Sawyer Park, a block over, where there was (and still is) a big cemented rock pile with a plaque honoring Waterman’s pioneers, so we could run off some energy and keep out of our parents’ hair.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles have all “gone to their great reward” by now. Our families still gather for a feast, but many relatives have moved away, so the table is smaller. Some high-tech gadgets have entered the picture. Parents nearly all carry cellphones now, some even answering calls at the dinner table, while kids play games or text each other on smartphones or tablets. The holiday football games still dominate the room, but on a larger high-definition flat-screen. Now I am the one taking a nap on a full stomach, and awaken only when called back to the dining room for leftovers and maybe a second piece of pumpkin pie.

Our kids and grandkids will reminisce a dozen or more years from now about their “good old days” when the family gathered for Thanksgiving. But I wonder what they will be eating and drinking. Can you imagine the high-tech gadgets they will have to entertain them by then?

County residents in need receive Thanksgiving turkeys

DeKALB – Juan Carlos Garcia of DeKalb said he has been doing his best to provide for his family while both he and his wife recover from major surgeries, which is why getting a Thanksgiving basket from The Salvation Army means so much to him this year.

“All of the services I get from [The Salvation Army], I really appreciate,” Garcia said. “There are not too many people doing this. We are fortunate we’ve got services like this and the other churches and food pantries in DeKalb.”

Volunteers and employees at The Salvation Army, 830 Grove St., DeKalb, spent Tuesday and Wednesday distributing Thanksgiving baskets to people in need in DeKalb County. Each basket included a turkey and assorted sides.

Salvation Army Corps Capt. Keith Graham said nearly 720 turkeys were collected through WLBK Radio’s Let’s Talk Turkey drive as well as donations from churches, community groups and individuals.

He said 610 people registered to get a basket by the start of distribution Tuesday morning, and the only requirement is to be a resident of DeKalb County.

“In good faith, we’ll take your application believing that you do need a turkey, so it’s totally nondiscriminatory,” Graham said. “So far, the people that really need them, they have been the ones to show up to get turkeys, and the ones who really don’t, they’re the ones who bring the turkeys.”

“Larger families would get more food than an individual,” he said.

“Obviously, you don’t want to give a 17-pound turkey to the little old lady who lives by herself.”

Graham said the challenge of distribution is never knowing how many baskets will be needed; however, Salvation Army staff are able to go out and buy more using the money donated to the cause. Any extra turkeys will be stored in The Salvation Army’s food pantry.

“People will eat turkey after Christmas,” he said.

Graham said some recipients also volunteer so they can give back at the same time.

“Some people, they say thank you when they take it, and some are pretty much brought to tears,” he said. “Like, ‘Wow, I never thought I’d need to be a recipient of any of your programs. I’ve always given to your Red Kettle, and now it’s my time to receive.’ ” Julie Cummings, a Salvation Army volunteer, said she began helping with Thanksgiving basket distributions in 2010 when she graduated from a sobriety program.

“I want to help people who have been where I’ve been to get them through, because I know it’s hard, but it’s a happy life after,” she said.

Cummings said distribution can get fairly busy; people were already lined up when the volunteers arrived at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

“It’s a great place,” she said. “It gives people hope – hope that their families won’t go without Thanksgiving.”

Thankful for life: Somonauk family saved from fire by police officer

SOMONAUK – This Thanksgiving, Cager and Janise Collins of Somonauk are thankful for many things: their children and grandchildren, their home and especially Somonauk police officer Steve Kuester.

Kuester was patrolling in his squad car during the late hours of Oct. 18.

While driving, he saw smoke in the air, so he rolled down his window. Kuester, who also is a volunteer firefighter, immediately recognized the smell of smoke, knowing that it was a house fire.

“My first thought was, ‘Who would be burning leaves at this time of night?’ ” Kuester said. “As soon as I rolled my window down, I knew it was definitely not leaves. I pulled around the block, trying to locate where the fire was coming from, and then I called it in.”

The Collinses both were asleep in their bed at 125 Cook Court. Janise Collins heard a noise outside and shook her husband awake.

“Somebody was banging and knocking on the windows, and then I heard a man yelling, ‘Get out, get out now, fire!’ ” she said. “That’s when I first started to smell smoke and hear the smoke detectors. It felt surreal, like a dream. I was in my nightgown, and I quickly found some shoes and grabbed my purse. As I went into the hallway, I put my hand on the wall that is attached to the garage.

It was burning hot. I was in shock, and I tripped as I ran down the stairs.”

Kuester helped the family leave their house as the fire department arrived. Leland Fire Department assisted with an engine and the Sandwich Fire Department responded with a ladder truck and EMS. By 3:30 a.m. Oct. 19, the fire was extinguished and the house was boarded up.

“The fire department took care of everything, and the Red Cross was at our house within an hour,” Janise Collins said. “Flames were shooting out, and it was the first fire with the Somonauk Fire Department’s new fire engine.

They worked so quickly, and every little detail was taken care of by 3:30 a.m.”

The Somonauk Fire Department attributes the fire to electric wiring in the garage. Inside the house, another small fire sparked from Janise Collins’ favorite blue armchair that was sitting on

Somonauk Fire Chief Pat Colford said that without Kuester’s diligence, alerting the family and calling the fire department when he did, the house and the lives inside would have been lost.

“Probably within another five to 10 minutes, the house would have been up in flames,” Colford said. “The family wouldn’t have even known; they were sleeping.”

The Collins family is living at a local hotel while their house is being cleaned from smoke damage. They are planning to return home by Christmas.

“When we went to bed that night, I never thought that we’d not wake up in the morning,” Janise Collins said.

“We never thought that we’d go to bed and it’d be the end of our life on earth.

Looking back, it’s scary to think how close we were to not seeing another to-

morrow. There’s no way to express our appreciation. We are so grateful.”

On Nov. 9, Kuester was given the Somonauk Police Department’s Life Saving Award during the Somonauk Village Board meeting. The award, presented by Somonauk Police Chief Rich Smith, was given to Kuester “in recognition of [his] efforts that resulted in the saving of two lives on Oct. 18.”

Kuester said he feels humbled by the award, but this was not the first time he helped stop a late-night fire. When he served with the Plano Police Department, he also saw and helped stop a fire during the middle of the night in a detached garage.

“I’ve had 23 years on the force, and it was just another day on the job,” Kuester said. “It’s joyous to see them again, to see their smiling faces. I don’t feel like a hero. I credit my training Photo provided and being at the right spot at the right Somonauk Police Officer Steve Kuester time.”

MOLLY MARIA HOWELL Molly Maria Howell was born to Henry and Bonnie Kuehl on October 17, 1950.

Molly was reunited with her parents and son Tony in Heaven on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 after many physical challenges. She met every obstacle with a positive attitude and always pulled through to tell about them. True friendship is a rare and special thing. She was full of fun, laughter and joy that touched many, many hearts. Molly had an instant rapport that led to great experiences for her friends and family.

Molly attended school, K-7th at District 8 at Kieth County in Western Nebraska. She graduated from Ogallala Senior High in Ogallala, Nebraska. In high school she was a cheerleader and Honored Queen of Jobs’ Daughters Bethel #21 in Ogallala. She attended Kearney State University in Kearney, Nebraska. Molly was an avid exerciser and enjoyed teaching

She is survived by her Angel sister, Bonnita (Richard Sherburne); her three loving brothers, Skip (Deb Kuehl), Timm (Renee Kuehl), and the baby Carsen (Janet Kuehl); many special nieces and nephews Dawn (Eric

Kolkman), Nathan, Melissa (Ken Coe), Timmarie (Jess Owen), Joel (Angie Sherburne), Cristopher (Beth Kuehl), Jacob (Kristine Kuehl), Max and Lizzy; several great nephews and nieces Jordan K., Brynan, Abby, Bransen, Ashtyn, Kenzie, Kobe, Jordan C, Ava, Anthony, and Blake.

Molly was surrounded by loved ones and made it known that her last life’s special event was “not to be a sad thing.” We are going to celebrate her life together, reminiscing special times and special things.

Duane A. “Peanut” Jacobson Sr., 69, of Sycamore, died November 21, 2016 in his home. Born July 31, 1947 to Leroy O. and

Jeanette G. (Wing) Jacobson. He worked at Seymour Paint for several years and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan.

*** Q: My mother bought a used vacuum cleaner in 1950, and we just discovered it in the attic. It’s an “Electrolux” that is a long, horizontal cylinder of chrome and black metal. It had runners like a sled, not wheels. She held a long rubber hose with a brush to sweep the carpet. Someone told us that old vacuum cleaners are collected. How can I sell it?

A: The Electrolux vacuum cleaner was first made in 1924 and redesigned in 1937 by industrial designer Lurelle Guild. His vacuum was a revolutionary modern design that delighted housewives who made it a best seller. Minor changes were made in later years and the tank type has remained in production. The 1937 machine already is part of museum design collections. The other early versions with runners are of limited interest as examples of design. Later machines with wheels are bought to use for very low prices. *** Q: My copper teakettle got overheated on the stove, the water boiled away, and the spout came off. Is this something that can be repaired?

A: Yes, the spout can be soldered back on. It can be difficult, since copper spreads the heat and the spout must be held firmly in place until the solder sets. Don’t use lead-based solder, since the lead will leach into the boiling water when you use the kettle. A metalsmith will be able to repair the teakettle and can tell you how much it will cost in advance. If it is not a valuable antique, you may decide to just buy a new kettle.

This 16-inch-high turkey made in 1907 is not a toy, but a “package” that held game parts. It is made of a composition material and has glass eyes and metal wheels. used in 1744 by the Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Vienna, the firm that made Royal Vienna porcelains. The firm closed in 1864, and many companies have reproduced Royal Vienna wares and the beehive mark. Your dishes were made in Karlsbad, Czechoslovakia, in the Royal Vienna style. Karlsbad was part of Bohemia until 1918 when it became part of Czechoslovakia. (Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic.) Karlsbad was a center for china decorating and exported many products to the U.S. The initials “PK” imply they were made by Paul Kuchler, a small porcelain decorating studio.

A: The rocking chair story, like the one that claims Washington chopped down a cherry tree, is the result of an early book by an author who never gave a source for the information. Legendary figures, like the Founding Fathers, often were glorified in paintings and books created more than 100 years after they died. The earliest recorded rocking chairs date from the 17th century in New England and England. The rockers were added to chairs with thick legs. A 1928 book credited the idea of the rocking chair to America and Franklin, not an unknown Englishman. Ads show that chair makers were selling Windsor rocking chairs after 1776 or adding rockers to existing chairs.

STATE Chicago reforms uneven year after shooting video

CHICAGO – Laquan McDonald’s life seemed to be headed nowhere. A ward of the state who had been shuffled between relatives’ homes and foster care, he was 17 when, high on the hallucinogenic drug PCP, he wandered down the street slashing tires with a knife.

This week marks the one-year anniversary of the release of the video showing the night a white police officer shot the black teen and kept shooting as he lay mortally wounded – 16 times in all.

The video turned McDonald into one of the most significant figures in the story of race and justice playing out in Chicago and across the country, although one whose lasting impact remains in doubt because of the city’s uneven response and the uncertain impact of Donald Trump’s election as president.

Although the city has created a new agency to investigate police shootings and misconduct it has delayed the promised creation of a citizen oversight board. Critics said the city is not spending enough money for the new agency to work effectively and that it won’t be independent of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office.

Thanksgiving travel expected to be heaviest since 2007

CHICAGO – Elizabeth Thompson can’t wait to leave the big city behind and decompress over the Thanksgiving holiday at her grandmother’s house in rural south-central Indiana. But first she has to get there.

On Wednesday, Thompson, 23, missed her Amtrak train from Chicago to Galesburg, Illinois, where she’d planned to catch a ride with a family member the rest of the way to Edinburgh, Indiana.

The city released hundreds more video clips of police encounters and created a policy to release videos within 60 days. The most noted example came in August when, a week after police fatally shot a suspected car thief, the city released video of the chase.

A number of use-of-force reforms have been implemented, including de-escalation training for officers. A pilot program to equip patrol officers with body cameras has been expanded, and the city said all patrol officers will be wearing them by the end of 2018.

Casting a shadow over it all is a mounting toll of shootings. The city is expected to surpass 700 homicides by the end of the year, the highest since 1998, and some 4,000 people injured.

A connection between the video aftermath and the rise in shootings isn’t clear. Since its release, police have expressed concern that officers are hesitating to do their jobs for fear of becoming the next “viral video.”

So far this year, there have been 77,000 arrests compared with 102,000 during the same period last year. But while the department said a big reason is a concerted effort not to make arrests in minor drug cases, others suspect officers are being more cautious.

“I have no doubt criminals feel emboldened because they see cops are absolutely much more reluctant to do their job,” said the Rev. Marshall Hatch, whose neighborhood has suffered from the violence.

The number of officer-involved shootings, which already had been dropping, fell to 20 so far this year compared with 28 last year and 43 in 2014, according to the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates complaints.

Muslim volunteers give 5K turkeys to Chicago families

CHICAGO – A group of Muslim volunteers in Chicago has expanded a 16-year-old program in which it gives free turkeys to underprivileged families on the city’s South Side.

Volunteers from Sabeel Food Pantry, a Muslim-run pantry on the city’s northwest side, have distributed 5,000 turkeys this year, which is three times as many as they handed out last year, the Chicago Tribune reported. This year, they started giving away turkeys through eight schools in three South Side neighborhoods.

MOUNT VERNON – An Alton man convicted of raping two toddlers and sentenced to life in prison will get a new trial after the appellate court overturned his conviction.

In December 2012, Michael Burgund, 33, was found guilty on five counts of predatory sexual assault of two girls between the ages of 1 and 3 years old, the Belleville News-Democrat reported.

Madison County Assistant State’s Attorney Jennifer Mudge said prosecutors intend to proceed with the charges as soon as the case is officially remanded back to them.

DETROIT – Detroit police Sgt. Michael Woody said Wayne State University officer Collin Rose, 29, died about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at a hospital after he was shot in the head while on patrol near the campus in Detroit.

Rose’s death had been reported earlier in a news release from school President M. Roy Wilson.

“This is a tragedy felt by all of us,” Wilson said. “Collin served Wayne State with distinction, and we owe those he left behind our deepest sympathies and our strong support.”

Rose also is the “only Wayne State officer ever to fall in the line of duty,” Wilson said.

The five-year veteran of the university’s police force had gone through surgery earlier Wednesday, but his condition was described by the department’s chief as “very grave.”

Police said a suspect in the shooting was arrested late Tuesday night a few blocks from where Rose was shot, but no charges have been filed.

CDC: Abortion rate falls to lowest level in decades

NEW YORK – The number and rate of abortions tallied by federal authorities have fallen to their lowest level in decades, according to new data released Wednesday.

The latest annual report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, incorporating data from 47 states, said the abortion rate for 2013 was 12.5 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 years. That is down 5 percent from 2012, and is half the rate of 25 recorded in 1980.

The last time the CDC recorded a lower abortion rate was in 1971, two years before the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision that established a nationwide right Tropical Storm Otto takes for women to have abortions.

PALM BEACH, Fla. – Injecting the first diversity into his Cabinet-to-be, Donald Trump selected two Republican women Wednesday who had unflattering things to say about him during the presidential campaign: South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and charter school advocate Betsy DeVos to lead the Department of Education.

Haley has little foreign policy experience, yet Trump praised her as “a proven dealmaker.” DeVos, like Trump, is new to government but has spent decades working to change America’s system of public education.

DeVos and Haley are the first women selected for top-level administration posts as the president-elect works to shape a White House team from scratch.

Haley is the daughter of Indian immigrants, so she also would be his first minority selection after a string of announcements of white men.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson said “an announcement is forthcoming” on his role, which would make him the first black choice – possibly as secretary of Housing and Urban Development – but he also suggested he’d be thinking about it over the Thanksgiving holiday.

“I feel that I can make a significant contribution particularly to making our inner

cities great for everyone,” Carson wrote on his Facebook page.

Trump is also expected to select billionaire investor Wilbur Ross Jr. to lead the Commerce Department, a senior Trump adviser said Wednesday, speaking only on the condition of anonymity because the adviser was not authorized to disclose internal deliberations.

The 78-year-old Ross, who is white, is chairman and chief strategy officer of private-equity firm W.L. Ross & Co., which has specialized in buying failing companies.

Nobody cooks, and maybe that’s OK Thanksgiving should transcend our differences

Thanksgiving was declared a federal holiday

by President Abraham Lincoln during the darkest days of our republic.

It was Oct. 3, 1863. The country was in the midst of the terrible Civil War. Only months earlier, about 50,000 soldiers had lost their lives in a threeday battle fought on the hills and farm fields around a small town in southern Pennsylvania called Gettysburg.

Amid the fighting and strife, Lincoln appealed to the people to give thanks, noting that the year had been “filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies.”

“To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God,” said the proclamation, which was written by Secretary of State William Seward and signed by Lincoln. “… It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People.”

Americans gave thanks during those difficult times, as they have for more than 150 years since, and in that spirit, let us do so today.

Some of us are so blessed on this Thanksgiving – with friends and family, the trappings of success and the promise of a bright and beautiful tomorrow – that giving thanks will be easy.

For others, it will be harder. Perhaps as did so many families in 1863, we have loved ones who cannot be with us because they are serving in the armed forces. Or maybe this year will be difficult because we have recently lost people we love. Or maybe things just aren’t going well in our lives.

Yet all of us can find some reason to give thanks, to celebrate the day and find comfort in the things that make our lives special and worth living.

Yes, this has been a year marked by disagreement and division on political matters.

But Thanksgiving should transcend our differences. Set forth at a time when the country was most divided and most in peril, it is meant to help us cut through the negativity and sadness in our lives and allow us to focus on those things that make our lives special, that give us joy and comfort.

We wish for all of you to enjoy this Thanksgiving and to share it with those who matter to you – whether all of them can be with you in person or not.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

The vast majority of Americans will be sitting down to a gigantic, mostly home-cooked meal this Thursday. So this seems like as good a time as any to point out that such meals have become an anomaly. Basic ingredients – such as, you know, turkeys, cranberries and sweet potatoes – now account for only 5 percent of U.S. food spending.

Basic ingredients also accounted for 5 percent of spending in 1999, so at least that’s not on the decline. But according to the June U.S. Department of Agriculture report from which I got these numbers, prices rose faster from 1999 through 2010 for basic ingredients than for any of the other food categories – so consumers were getting relatively less of them for the money. And I’ve got to think that, 50 or 100 years ago, basic ingredients made up a much higher share of food spending.

Sometime soon, it appears, spending at restaurants and bars will surpass spending at food and beverage stores. That doesn’t necessarily mean more people will be eating out than staying home: according to market-research firm NPD Group, 48 percent of dinner meals purchased from restaurants are eaten at home as takeout. NPD also reports that sales of prepared foods at grocery stores are up 30 percent since 2008. The overall picture is pretty clear: Americans are increasingly outsourcing the preparation of their food.

I’m a cooking-from-scratch kind of guy, and I’m tempted to assault you now with a long screed that would eventually boil down to me asserting my moral superiority. But there’s obvious economic logic to putting food preparation in the hands of experts and letting those who don’t get actual pleasure from cooking do other things with their time – and their kitchen space. Take it from Rob Rhinehart, co-founder and chief executive officer of the venture-capital-backed California startup that makes meal-replace-

ment drink Soylent: “I think it was a bit presumptuous for the architect to assume I wanted a kitchen with my apartment and make me pay for it. My home is a place of peace. I don’t want to live with red hot heating elements and razor sharp knives.

That sounds like a torture chamber. However, it’s not a total loss.

I was able to use the cabinets to store part of my book collection.”

The big problem with leaving food preparation to the experts, however, has been that up to now the experts in food preparation in the U.S. have mainly been experts in making unhealthy food addictive. The move away from making food from scratch has been accompanied by a big increase in obesity that is probably not coincidental.

So the challenge is building and sustaining a food-preparation sector that doesn’t make us sick.

I guess Rhinehart’s Soylent is a step in that direction with its more wholesome alternative to sugar-laden protein drinks – although the fact that the stuff was literally making people sick earlier this year means it’s probably not the best example. But there are lots of other newcomers to the food preparation scene, many of them also backed by Silicon Valley venture capitalists, that are trying to make wholesomeness

and healthiness a selling point.

Some of them are struggling.

It was a story by Bloomberg’s Eric Newcomer on the troubles at Munchery, a San Francisco startup that cooks and delivers meals in several U.S. cities, that got me thinking about this topic. I was initially inclined to bash Silicon Valley and its arrogant belief that it can reinvent every business, even a low-margin one with limited capacity for digitization. Plus, who the heck would want to get their meals from a venture-backed startup called Munchery.

Then I talked to my 94-yearold father, and learned that he and my stepmother have actually tried Munchery and now buy three dinners a week from a rival called Thistle that promises (and, from what my dad says, delivers) “simple, clean, whole foods made with loving hands and organic, seasonal ingredients.” The aging of the U.S. population is one more reason to think the trend away from cooking for ourselves is going to continue for a while yet.

And upon reflection I have concluded that I should probably be rooting for Silicon Valley’s efforts to build a food business that isn’t constructed from junk instead of mocking them.

Barbs win Hiatt’s coaching debut Soph Dahnwelh wins by fall in his 1st varsity match

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The DeKalb wrestling team took care of business in Sam Hiatt’s debut as coach Wednesday, topping Oswego East, 69-12.

Hiatt said the prematch preparation made him a little nervous, but watching his team dominate was satisfying.

“Getting all of the gear together, making sure everyone was here and certified, getting everyone on weight, I now know how (former) coach (Mike) Pater felt last season,” Hiatt said. “I was excited to see these guys wrestle.

You don’t score 69 points and win a lot of your matches with bonus points without all of the hard work the boys have put in. That work really carried over to the matches. It was a lot of fun to watch.”

One of the bright points for the Barbs was sophomore Blah Dahnwelh.

Dahnwelh, who was making his varsity debut in the 170-pound weight class, won his match by fall. Dahnwelh was patient and showed poise, both qualities he said he has been working on with the new coaching staff.

“I had my opponent (Ryan Coffey) biting on fakes,” Dahnwelh said. “I was kind of nervous at the beginning, but then I began to see his weak spots. I kept all my weight on his back so he couldn’t get out of the circle to restart the match and it worked.”

Hiatt said he expects a big season and prep career from the sophomore standout.

“I don’t think that he doesn’t know how good he can be yet,” Hiatt said of Dahnwelh. “He did not wrestle at the varsity level last season. He put in a lot of work in the offseason and got stronger. If he keeps working like he has been, he’ll be real good.”

Senior Jakob Norman (138) was another DeKalb wrestler who won on a fall, forcing opponent Adam Ingalls to submit. Norman said he doesn’t fancy himself a submission artist, but he

Oswego East (0-1) is a young program, having graduated 14 wrestlers last season. Coach Paul Coy said his team has been putting in a lot of effort, and what shows on the scoreboard doesn’t necessarily reflect that.

“We only have one senior,” Coy said. “Nico Patch and Sean Clabots won matches at 152 and 285 today. We are primarily freshmen and sophoSam Hiatt mores right now. NIU again loses grip of a late lead Lead slips away in final 6 minutes for 2nd straight game

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Coach Mark Montgomery calls it winning time, and it hasn’t been kind to his Northern Illinois men’s basketball team the past two games.

The Huskies lost a lead in the final six minutes for the second straight game, losing 68-64 to Cal Poly in the opener of the NIU Thanksgiving Classic on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

“There comes a time where it’s winning time, the last five minutes of the game,” Montgomery said. “And we’ve been outplayed. Credit Cal Poly, they made some tough shots at the end of the shot clock. ... I still think the first half effected the second half, but you have to be able to close out games. The

The Huskies (2-2) trailed by 10 at halftime, but started the second half on a 9-0 run and took their first lead of the game on a layup by Levi Bradley with 9:20 left. The lead expanded to as much as six after Austin Pauga hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions.

Like Montgomery, Pauga said the Huskies needed to play stronger in the first half.

“I think we need to focus on the whole 40 minutes of the game,” Pauga said. “You take it play by play, you get too distracted by a bad play or a mistake. We need to focus on the game as a whole.”

That 51-45 lead didn’t last long, as the Mustangs (3-2) scored six points

in 1:16 to tie the score with 6:48 left.

They took a 56-53 lead on a 3-pointer by Victor Joseph with 4:41 left and never trailed again.

The Mustangs shot 11 for 22 on 3-pointers, the most they’ve made in a game this year and already their second game making at least half of their 3-point shots.

Montgomery said he was pleased with Huskies’ defense, which was forcing shot clock violations all night. He said many of the 3-pointers were contested at the end of the shot clock.

“It’s difficult when people make deep 3s,” senior Marin Maric said.

“They shot 50 percent from the 3. We know they live and die by the 3-point shot, and it’s one of those games we know we should step forward.”

Maric led the Huskies with 14 points, despite missing a big chunk of the first half with two fouls, and Aaric Armstead added 11 and a team-high six rebounds. For the Mustangs, Kyle Toth was 4 for 6 on 3-point shots for 12 points, while Ridge Shipley was 3 for 5 for 15 points.

“It’s disappointing it was another game our bigs were in foul trouble,”

Montgomery said. “Marin picked up two quick fouls. We’re a different team with him out there.”

At Cal State Northridge on Saturday, the Huskies lost 84-82 despite a five-point lead with 5:24 left. Cal Poly made a late comeback Wednesday.

“They made big shots at the end,” Maric said. “We came out in the second half full of energy, we bounced back and took a lead and everything. But like I said, they made the big plays at the end.”

The Huskies resume tournament play with a 1 p.m. game Friday against Elon.

“We got Elon on Friday, and it’s going to be a good game,” Maric said. “I want to invite everybody to come to the game. We are not taking this game easy. We are going to prepare tomorrow for them and be ready for Friday.”

Notes: Marshawn Wilson did not play Wednesday. Montgomery said the sophomore guard was suspended, and was unsure if he’d be playing Friday. ... Cal Poly’s Victor Joseph led all scorers with 19 points. ... No Mustang had more than four rebounds as NIU finished with a 33-22 edge on the glass.

After leading the Northern Illinois volleyball program to its first Mid-American Conference tournament title since 2001 and one of the most successful conference seasons in program history, coach Ray Gooden was named the MAC Coach of the Year on Wednesday.

The award is the fifth of his career and his fourth in the past six seasons.

Gooden previously earned the honors in 2006, 2011, 2012 and 2015.

After a pair of straight-set victories over Ohio and Miami (Ohio), NIU finished with a 25-5 overall record to capture its first MAC tournament and automatic berth into the NCAA tournament since 2001. The Huskies’ 15-1 MAC record tied the program’s mark for most MAC wins (2001) and set a record for conference winning percentage at .938.

SYCAMORE – In a defensive battle in the paint, the Genoa-Kingston boys basketball team grinded out a 48-39 victory over Dundee-Crown in the second game for each team in the Leland G. Strombom Holiday Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Sycamore High School.

Genoa-Kingston (1-1) had its hands full on offense against the Chargers (0-2), who gave the Cogs a tough time, specifically in the paint. After a scoreless first three minutes of the game, G-K’s Zach Miller quickly found his rhythm with three consecutive 3-pointers and went on to finish the half going 5 for 7 from 3-point range. Miller added two points in the second half to lead all scorers with 19 points. Bailey Foley finished with 11 points for the Cogs.

“Zach Miller has had four practices so far, and he’s just been outstanding for us,” Cogs coach Corey Jenkins said of Miller, who just finished playing football after the Cogs lost in the quarterfinals to Johnsburg less than

two weeks ago. “He’s kind of gutting through it right now because I’m sure he still has his football legs. He’s been fun to watch, and it’s a nice start for him. I thought it might be a bit of a struggle for him after just coming back from football, but he’s just a terrific athlete.”

The Cogs started the second half with a 27-21 lead, but scored only eight points in the third quarter. DundeeCrown scored 12 points in quarter, but never was able to gain the lead.

Dundee-Crown’s Gabriel Bergeron, Bradley Stec, and Khiry Powell each finished with eight points.

Jenkins is encouraged by the way the Cogs have played in a pair of close games to start the season.

“I’m excited for them,” Jenkins said. “Like I said, just wait until we get two full weeks of practice with all our guys, and I’m excited about the potential of this team. I think our guard play is really good, and our big three rotation is solid, too. Those guys are not going to back down from anyone, and they will challenge you, so let’s see how we grow as a team going forward.”

While the showboating Maui is clearly intended as comic relief – to a fault, at times – it’s Moana who holds your interest. Small details make her relatable, from her anguished looks to the way she tosses her hair into a messy bun during physical activity. (Hair is one of the film’s best animation achievements: Moana and Maui’s black, curly locks move and flow like real tresses.)

“Moana” faced an uphill battle before its release, with some commentators calling Maui’s bulky physique a racist stereotype, and a Halloween costume based on his character getting pulled, after accusations of cultural appropriation. The finished film, however, will settle any bad blood.

Yes, Maui is portrayed as extremely strong and buff, but worries about his weight are an issue of animation, not character portrayal. In terms of racial insensitivity, Disney has made its most culturally sensitive film ever. Nearly every character – even some who don’t have names – has island ties. (Football player Troy Polamalu, of Samoan descent, voices Villager No. 1.) And such seemingly small touches as the characters’ tattoos – handtapped, as is the tradition in Polynesian culture – play a prominent role in the plot.

While the main themes of “Moana” are identity and self-discovery – familiar territory, to be sure – the film manages to enliven such well-traveled latitudes with a breeze as fresh as the islands.

Renowned Mongolian musician Tamir Hargana will perform in concert at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Crest Retirement Center. His field of music is the horse head fiddle and Mongolian throat-singing.

A graduate student in music at Northern Illinois University, he was awarded a scholarship provided by the Lester K. Smith Creative Arts Fund.

Smith is a resident of Oak Crest.

Hargana graduated from Inner Mongolia University Arts College, specializing in Mongolian and Tuvan throat-singing, Khoomei, and the horse head fiddle (Morin Khuur). He is one of the first throat-singing majors to graduate from Inner Mongolia University with a bachelor’s degree.

He has won many awards and prizes in throat-singing competitions in Mongolia, Tuva, Inner Mongolia, Russia and China.

The young musician has performed in many concerts and workshops in the U.S., Russia, Tuva, Mongolia, Taiwan and China. He also was featured in TV documentaries about throat-singing.

As a part of Zamq, a contemporary Mongolian music group, he was featured in two albums. He is now a member of the Northern Wind Trio, a contemporary fusion music group at

The Kishwaukee Concert Band will present its holiday program at 3 p.m. Dec. 10 in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

The directors for the concert will be Dave Lehman and Deb Shofner.

John E. Hansen and Sue Huhta are sponsoring the concert in memory of Millie Sulaver. The band also is supported by the DeKalb County Community Foundation and the Mary E. Stevens Concert and Lecture Fund.

Shofner will direct “A Yuletide Holiday,” a medley of “Here We Come A-Wassailing,” “Still, Still, Still” and “Good King Wenceslas,” arranged by John Moss. Darren Jenkins’ arrangement of “Christmas Bells are Ringing” is a light, but emotional piece. “In the Bleak Midwinter,” by Gustav Holst and arranged

by Robert Smith, is a beautiful, peaceful composition. The familiar “Coventry Carol” is combined with “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” in an arrangement by Calvin Custer.

Lehman will conduct “A Christ-

mas Festival,” which includes “Deck the Halls,” and “Good King Wenceslas.” “Three Moods of Hanukkah” is a medley of “Hanukkah, O Hanukkah,” “Maoz Tzur” and “Mi Y’Malel” in a rhythmic selection. The Mannheim Steamroller version of “Deck the Halls” is sure to please everyone.

“Forest Green,” “Wassail Song” and “Sussex Carol” are featured in Douglas Wagner’s arrangement of “A Vaughn Williams Christmas.”

“Fantasy on a Bell Carol” is a bright arrangement of “Carol of the Bells.”

The Brass Choir will perform “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming.”

This is the 15th season for the all-volunteer band, which is made up of anyone older than 18 who has played a wind or percussion instrument in the past.

No auditions are necessary. Newcomers are always welcome. Practices are from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. Wednesdays at Huntley Middle School in DeKalb.

The concert is free and handicapped accessible.

Since this is the winter season, check the local radio stations if the weather is bad. The “snow” date is Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.

The Beth Fowler Dance Company will open its 2016-2017 season with its annual production of “The Nutcracker,” to be performed two consecutive weekends in two locations.

The holiday classic will be performed at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 and 3, and 2 p.m. Dec. 4. at DeKalb’s Egyptian Theater. Additional performances will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 10 and 2 p.m. Dec. 11 at St. Charles North High School.

Many area families have made this magical production a part of their holiday tradition. With beautiful dancing, costumes and stage sets, this popular holiday fantasy tells a story that can make one feel like a child at Christmas.

The ballet, featuring the music of Tchaikovsky, tells the story of young Clara who receives a toy soldier nutcracker at her family Christmas party.

That night, her dreams take her into a world where the Nutcracker comes to life and defeats the Rat King in a midnight battle. The Nutcracker is transformed into a prince and escorts Clara on a magical adventure through

Genoa as the Christmas Fairy and the Rat King; Sonia Gaytan of Genoa as the Rose Queen; and Alyssa Meier of Sycamore as the Snow Queen. Guest artist Wade Tischhauser of Chicago, a frequent performer with the company, performs as the Snow King. Guest artist Taylor Maurchie-Banks, a dance major at Northern Illinois University, will perform as the Nutcracker prince/cavalier.

Guest artist Larry Pool of Rockford will perform as the Arabian king with Beth Fowler as the Arabian queen.

Herr Drosselmeyer, Clara’s toymaker godfather, will be portrayed by Phil Masterton of Rockford.

Choreography is by artistic director Beth Fowler assisted by Brooke Fowler.

Original choreography in the grand pas de deux is by Lev Ivanov.

Reserved tickets can be purchased in advance. Each child’s ticket includes a meet-and-greet with the Sugar Plum Fairy and friends.

Former Malta resident Scott Harrington will share the history behind his recently published book Wednesday at the Malta Public Library.

Harrington, who grew up in Malta, spent four months of his service in the U.S. Air Force at Nakhon Phanom Air Base in Thailand. His four months overlapped the temporary duty tours of three different helicopter rescue units. His book, titled “They Called It Naked Fanny,” shares the story of helicopter rescues during the early years of the Vietnam War that originated from that Air Base.

Harrington, then an Air Force 1st Lieutenant, said the rescue missions

detailed in the book reveal a part of Air Force aviation history that has never been told in its entirety.

“These helicopter pilots were placed in a combat situation with no preparation for what they would be doing; in helicopters designed for local base rescue; that had no armament; no protective armor plating; no resealing fuel tanks and rotor blades made of spruce and wrapped in neoprene,” Harrington said in a news release. “That’s why the aircraft and the men who flew them were often referred to as ‘Blades of wood, men of steel.’”

Harrington’s presentation and book signing will take place at 6:30 p.m at the Malta Public Library, 203 Adams St. in Malta.

Celebrate the holiday season with IVT DAILY CHRONICLE Indian Valley Theatre will accept donations to the Franklin Mall Project at its upcoming production of “A Christmas Chaos.”

The Franklin Mall Christmas Project is an annual holiday food drive, directed by the Sandwich Lions Club, and has been a community tradition for more than 60 years. It originated in 1954 when the late Franklin “Red” Mall and his wife Peg began taking groceries for holiday dinners to folks who were “having a tough time of it.”

IVT will accept donations at the door of nonperishable food and personal items. Suggested items include peanut butter, cereal, dry pasta, boxed dinners, pancake mix, dried beans, canned goods and even personal items

In response to the inflammation, synovial cells also begin to multiply. This causes the normally smooth synovium to form a rough, grainy tissue called pannus. The pannus grows into the previously empty space in the joint. In addition, synovial cells and other cells produce chemicals that eat away at the cartilage in the joint.

Together, the pannus and the inflammatory chemicals badly damage the joint. If the tendons become inflamed, they may shorten and prevent the joint from bending. If the tendons rupture, the joint may become loose or floppy.

In a normal immune system response, inflammation subsides when the threat is removed. But in RA, the immune response is not normal; it continues indefinitely. This prolonged inflammation can be devastating.

The result is swelling, redness, heat and pain in the joints. Ultimately, the joints can be so badly damaged they become deformed. People with RA can have great difficulty walking, bending, lifting or using their hands.

As RA progresses, it can limit a person’s ability to carry out normal daily activities such as dressing, bathing and walking. However, with medications, good self-care and, if necessary, surgery, most people with RA can avoid disability. In the past decade, research has led to powerful new medicines that prevent the slow destruction of the joints in many people with RA. I hope your doctor has prescribed one of these medicines for you.

Dear Reader: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic (long-term) disease. It causes painful and sometimes disabling inflammation of the joints. RA also can affect other tissues in the body, such as the skin, eyes, lungs and blood vessels.

RA is an autoimmune disease. That means the immune system mistakenly identifies normal, healthy cells as dangerous and attempts to destroy them. Why does this happen? Do the normal, healthy cells somehow “look” foreign to the immune system? Or is there something in the normal cells, such as a virus that hasn’t yet been discovered, that attracts the attention of the immune system?

There are a lot of scientists trying to figure that out.

In RA, the immune system targets synovial joints, the movable joints found in the shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, hips, knees, ankles and toes. In these joints, a protective layer of cartilage covers the ends of the bones where they meet. The joints take their name from the synovium, a membrane that lines the joint.

The synovium produces synovial fluid, a thick, sticky, yellowish liquid. It lubricates the joint and minimizes friction. It also forms a seal that allows neighboring bones to slide freely against each other without pulling apart.

RA occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium. The attacking cells release inflammatory chemicals that increase blood flow to the site. They direct an army of white blood cells, germ-fighters and other substances into the invaded tissue. White blood cells
