As the holiday season arrives, I find myself thinking about all the big events coming up. This starts to make me a little anxious.

I am sick of being anxious around the holidays. I want to have a leisurely experience from now on.

The only way I think I can manage this is to be more lenient with myself. I need to improve upon my priorities.

Do I really need the glitz and glitter?

As I have been re-evaluating, I have noticed it is not the big events that really make me happy and grateful.

Big surprise – it’s the little things that make the holidays, especially Thanksgiving, enjoyable.

Being so grateful for my family, my health and my friends brings obvious appreciation.

What I am talking about are my favorite things all year long. The private list that makes one smile inside and out.

One of the most palpable, literally, is the StairMaster at the Kish YMCA. This thing really makes me work hard and challenges me. Because of this, we have a tremendous love/hate relationship. Nonetheless, I always have the best endorphin high afterward.

Watching my daughter grow up is so rewarding and such a stitch. Hannah Jo is 2, and she cracks me up with her word choices. I know she is starting to learn to form sentences, so at times she will pronounce a word wrong or replace one word with another. Her vocabulary is off the charts, and

DeKALB WILL HOST PARKING RESTRICTIONS OPEN HOUSE

The city of DeKalb will host a Parking Restrictions Open House for the 1st and 2nd Wards from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 5 in the City Council Chambers, 200 S. Fourth St., DeKalb.

“Booch” really stirs my pot nowadays, too. Kombucha tea is this tasty beverage that comes in various flavors. My favorite is cayenne pepper with lemon. This stuff makes my taste buds smile and gives me some great probiotics.

Finally, my husband’s old T-shirts. They might be old and ragged, but they are gems to me. Even after years of washing and drying them, they still smell like him. They are mostly his old baseball shirts or ones from his favorite sports team. It’s a bonus that they are big and comfy.

Instead of the holiday hoopla, I would much rather keep it simple. I can go to the YMCA for a solid morning workout. Afterward, I rehydrate with some booch and then cuddle up with the family while wearing my husband’s old T-shirt.

Planning begins again on NIU Stevens Building construction

DeKALB – A new construction timeline is in the works for the Stevens Building on the Northern Illinois University campus while crews assess what further delays may have been created by putting the project on hold for a year and a half.

“We don’t have a deadline, but we’ve been saying all along that once work resumes, it will take about a year to complete,” NIU spokesman Joe King said.

The initial timeline had the building’s opening scheduled for the start of the 2016-17 academic year; however, the project was stopped in the summer of 2015 after the state failed to have a budget in place and Capital Development Board projects were shut down.

King said the university received $15.5 million June 30 as part of the state’s stopgap budget intended to pay for the balance of the $27.4 million project.

Costs could rise if the contractor determines parts of the project will have to be rewinterized, but King said officials expect the state would cover them.

NIU spent $300,000 last November to winterize the work that already had been done on the project while awaiting appropriations. The state has since reimbursed the university for those expenses on top of the $15.5 million, King said.

Although the state sent official notice in July that work on the project could continue, King said negotiations between River City Construction and the Capital Development Board prolonged the process.

Other factors contributing to the delay in restarting construction were the availability of the contractors and making sure bills were paid for previous work, King said.

“The contractors were not just waiting around for the last year,” he said. “They’ve had other projects to do.”

King said crews have been out on the site for the past three weeks figuring cost and logistical changes that will need to be calculated into the plan to resume construction.

before the ground freezes.

“It’s challenging right now because one portion of the building they have not started on, and it will be difficult to get the foundation in if we don’t get moving,” King said.

“That will have a big bearing on the timeline.”

Crews also must assess any weather damage that may have happened despite efforts to minimize harm by sealing the building with plastic and pumping heat through it during the winter and dehumidifying it during the summer.

If they cannot set the foundation before the ground freezes, King said, the crews likely would seal off that part of the building and continue working on the new wing.

Once finished, the building is intended to house the anthropology department and the School of Theatre and Dance.

SYCAMORE – Plans for a 48-unit senior housing development on the southeast corner of Mount Hunger Road and Route 23 may require reworking based on concerns raised Monday by members of the Sycamore City Council.

The council tabled an ordinance to rezone the proposed site of the development from highway business district to multifamily residential.

If the council approves the rezoning, Brian Grainger, owner of Solid Construction Services and Somerset Farm Sycamore LLC, plans to buy the 8.59-acre property and build 12 four-

unit buildings consisting of luxury townhomes for active adults age 55 and older.

Despite a unanimous recommendation from the Planning Commission, council members debated whether a residential development would be the best use for the property.

Council member Alan Bauer said the city should strive to be “business friendly” by preserving areas for commercial development, especially with plenty of residential-zoned property available in Sycamore.

“You’ve got commercial zoning to the north, and when you skip over the park and the river, you’ve got commercial zoning to the south, and I just think we don’t need to be spot-zoning

this,” Bauer said. “Once you build houses or residential property there, it will be there for a long time.”

Given the lack of commercial interest in the area, council member Chuck Stowe said senior housing would be a good choice for development.

“I don’t know if this is really a viable commercial area,” Stowe said. “It will continue to sit empty. It may fill in sometime; maybe that’s another 20 years down the road, but until then, that’s probably going to look like it is now.”

City Manager Brian Gregory said several commercial developers have been deterred from that location because it is directly across from Sycamore Middle School, and liquor

licensing is prohibited within that distance.

Gregory said the senior housing development would fit in with the city’s comprehensive plan, which stipulates that senior living neighborhoods are available within walkable distances to convenience locations, such as the downtown area.

However, the commission still is working out some details, such as installing a new walking path and traffic signals.

“The petitioner has noted that he would intend to, if successful with the rezoning request, bring back to the plan commission in December a preliminary plat and a planned unit development request,” Gregory said.

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man convicted of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child involving a 6-yearold girl could spend the rest of his life in prison.

On Tuesday, Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert sentenced Jeremiah P. Riggs, of the 1100 block of Market Street, DeKalb, to 63 years in prison.

Under state sentencing rules, Riggs will be required to serve 85 percent of his sentence.

The judge said that it likely was a life sentence for the 37-year-old man. She told Riggs that his actions had a profound effect on his family.

“You’ve destroyed that,” Stuckert said.

He has been in jail since he was arrested in December 2013.

A month later, a grand jury returned a 15-count indictment against Riggs that accused him of repeatedly raping the girl, who was 6 years old at the time of his arrest.

Stephanie Klein asked the judge to sentence Riggs to 90 years in prison.

DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch, who represented Riggs at the trial, has asked for the minimum sentence of 54 years.

The most emotional testimony of the day came from Amie Riggs, the former wife of the defendant.

Amie Riggs took the stand to make a statement to the judge before the sentencing.

“Every single person whose life you touched feels guilty,” she said. “... You need to atone for your mistakes – I’m sure they were mistakes.”

Amie Riggs asked the judge for leniency for her former husband. She said that she hoped he would have a chance to be a father to his children.

Jeremiah Riggs declined to make a statement before he was sentenced.

However, he did raise issues about the effectiveness of his attorney at trial and asked for a new trial. The judge denied that motion.

McCulloch called the minimum sentence “extraordinarily long.” He called a jail minister to testify about Jeremiah Rigg’s time in custody.

Philip Meier said he had seen Riggs mature over time and had witnessed a progression in his faith.

Riggs remained at the DeKalb County Jail as of Tuesday night awaiting a transfer to a state prison.

County home sales slump 14.5 percent in October DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Home sales in DeKalb County fell 14.5 percent in October as prices increased slightly and the inventory of homes on the market continued to decline.

Sales of existing homes in the county fell to 100 last month, down from 117 in October 2015, according to figures released Tuesday by the Illinois Association of Realtors. Closed sales were up 2.4 percent to 1,044 through October, compared with 1,020 closed sales during the same 10-month period in 2015.

The median sales price in the county increased to $139,000, up 3 percent from $135,000 in October 2015. For the year, the median sales price at the end of October was up 4.8 percent from $145,000 to $152,000.

On Tuesday, the least expensive home for sale in DeKalb County was listed at $34,900. The listing said the 950-square-foot, three-bedroom, one-bathroom home at 316 Park Ave. in Sycamore needed “total remodeling.”

Single-family home median sales prices fell 3 percent to $135,000 last month in DeKalb County, while condo prices jumped 23.5 percent to $145,750.

The IAR report noted that activity for one month can look extreme because of a small sample size.

The total number of homes for sale in the county declined to 393 in October, a 15.8 percent drop from 467 homes in October 2015. However, homes on the market sold at a quicker pace. The average number of days on market until sale was 67 in October, down 1.5 percent from 68 days in October 2015. For

the year, homes have spent an average of 67 days on market until sale, down 14.1 percent from 78 days during the same 10-month period in 2015.

Statewide, a decline in inventory and a seasonal slowdown “helped drive Illinois home sales lower in October, even as median home prices continued to post solid annual gains,” according to an IAR news release.

Statewide home sales in October totaled 12,469 homes sold, down 5.4 percent from 13,186 in October 2015.

The statewide median price in October was $179,000, up 6.9 percent from October 2015, when the median price was $167,500. The median is a typical market price where half the homes sold for more and half sold for less.

“While sales were softer in October on an annual basis, much of this can be attributed to a typical seasonal slowdown and the chronically low number of homes on the market,” IAR President Doug Carpenter said in a statement. “Given the relatively short time it is taking on average to sell a home, strong market demand might work to a seller's advantage as we start to close out the year.”

Nationally, Americans bought homes in October at the fastest pace in nearly a decade, helped out by low mortgage rates that have since started to climb after the presidential election of Donald Trump.

The National Association of Realtors said Tuesday that sales of existing homes rose 2 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.6 million. Sales reached their strongest pace since February 2007, a sign that the market still is healing from the collapsing prices and foreclosures that ignited the 2008 financial crisis.

A stable job market and historically cheap borrowing costs have spurred demand from homebuyers this year.

But sales growth has been tempered somewhat by accelerating prices and a shortage of properties on the market.

Sales gains possibly could slow in the

coming months, as rising mortgage rates are making home loans more expensive.

“Clearly, the market continues to underestimate just how much demand for homes is out there, even in the face of tight inventory and rising existing home prices that are now the highest on record,” said Svenja Gudell, chief economist at Zillow.

Falling mortgage rates helped boost sales for much of the year, but rates surged after the election. The increase means that yearly debt payments for a median-priced home would increase by more than $500 on average for people trying to buy homes in November and December.

Investors expect the federal budget deficit to rise in a Trump administration, causing the yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury notes to reach about 2.3 percent.

The rising interest rates trickled into the housing market. The average 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage climbed to nearly 4 percent from less than 3.5 percent at the end of October. Few housing experts said that higher rates at this stage will fully disrupt sales, although it might cause some existing homeowners to stay in place rather than upgrade to new homes and costlier mortgages.

The impact of higher rates could be offset if wages accelerate strongly during a Trump administration, giving Americans higher incomes.

Still, the supply crunch of the past year shows little sign of reversing itself.

Sales listings have fallen 4.3 percent over the past year to 2.02 million homes. The shortage has pushed up the median sales price of existing homes 6 percent from a year ago to $232,200.

The low mortgage rates aided buyers with solid credit, although tighter lending standards appear to have hurt potential sales.

STATE Illinois to implement bereavement leave for union The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner administration’s plans to implement bereavement leave for union members, but leaders of a public-employee union say the new plan is meant to distract Illinois workers and the public from larger contract negotiation issues.

The contract terms will enable members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union to take paid time off after the death of a child or stepchild, the State Journal-Register reported.

The administration said the move

became possible after the Illinois Labor Relations Board ruled last week that contract talks between the state and the union were at an impasse. The decision allowed bereavement leave to be implemented immediately.

“Putting it into effect as soon as possible just seems to make the most sense,” said John Terranova, deputy director of labor relations for the Department of Central Management Services.

Terranova said it was a surprise that previous contracts did not provide time off for such circumstances, which left some employees forced to

use sick or vacation time. He said the union wanted the issue discussed in contract talks, which the administration included in its offer to the union.

But an AFSCME spokesman said the move is meant to divert attention from the Rauner administration’s push to hike employee health premiums by 100 percent while freezing wages for four years, cutting average worker’s pay by $10,000.

This is the third provision since the labor board’s ruling last week that the administration said it intends to implement.

Lawmaker: Ill. dollars should not be used for border wall

CHICAGO – A Democratic legislator wants to prevent Illinois from having financial ties with companies that might build a border wall.

State Rep. Will Guzzardi said Tuesday that the proposed wall that was a cornerstone of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign sends the wrong message.

The Chicago Democrat’s plan proposes divesting Illinois’ pension funds from any businesses involved with the wall. In 2007, Illinois passed an Iran divestment law.

Guzzardi said the proposal is his way of calling on Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to clarify his views on Trump. Rauner has avoided discussing the president-elect.

Rauner said he’ll review the bill. He wouldn’t directly address the wall, saying rhetoric during the campaign was appalling.

A spokesman says House Speaker Michael Madigan hasn’t taken a position on Guzzardi’s bill. Other legislative leaders didn’t immediately have comment.

Ex-Chicago alderman pleads not guilty to tax charges

CHICAGO – Former Chicago Alderman Edward Vrdolyak has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the state of Illinois’ $9 billion tobacco settlement.

Extra-alarm fire reported at Old Chicago Main Post Office

CHICAGO – An extra-alarm fire at the Old Chicago Main Post Office has been struck out with no injuries.

Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said Tuesday that firefighters were called to the long-vacant structure around 10:30 a.m. The fire was extinguished after about an hour.

Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner William Vogt said a pile of “old oily rags” fueled the fire, but it was unclear what sparked it. Earlier, black smoke could be seen pluming from the building, which straddles a freeway.

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. – Residents of an East Chicago public housing building near a lead- and arsenic-polluted Superfund site said they have tested positive for lead and want the entire building tested.

Sherlene Lowe, who lives at the John B. Nicosia Senior Building, said she and other residents of the East Chicago Housing Authority’s high-rise building have tested positive for lead, the (Northwest Indiana) Times reported. The building is northwest of the Superfund site.

“We have seniors. We have people who are handicapped. We need someone to come in here and get everyone tested,” said Lowe, president of the building’s Resident Council.

Lowe asked the City Council last week to pay attention to the Nicosia building.

City Attorney Carla Morgan said the health department will consider on-site testing, and the housing authority’s attorney said the agency has requested historical testing data from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Local, state and federal officials have focused for the last several months on the West Calumet Housing Complex, along with Carrie Gosch Elementary School and sections of the city east of the housing complex.

Trump begins to back off vows on Clinton, climate

NEW YORK – Two weeks after his election victory, President-elect Donald Trump began backing off campaign promises Tuesday, including his hard line on climate change and his vow to jail “Crooked Hillary” Clinton that had brought thunderous “Lock her up” chants at his rallies.

A top adviser said Trump is now focused on matters that are essential in setting up his administration, not on comments he made during the heat of the campaign.

After a year blasting The New York Times, Trump submitted to an interview with reporters and editors at their Manhattan office.

Among the topics covered, he: • Pushed back against questions about conflicts that could arise due to a lack of separation between his government post and his many businesses, declaring that “the law’s totally on my side, the president can’t have a conflict of interest.”

• Took his strongest stance yet against the “alt-right,” a term often used as code for the white supremacist movement. Although members are celebrating his victory, he said, “It’s not a group I want to energize. And if they are energized, I want to look into it and find out why.”

• Spoke positively not only of fellow Republicans in Congress – “Right now they are in love with me” – but also of President Barack Obama, who he said is “looking to do absolutely the right thing for the country in terms of transition.”

Trump, who left late Tuesday to spend Thanksgiving at his estate in Florida, also continued to work to populate his incoming administration, officially asking GOP presidential rival Ben Carson to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development, according to a person familiar with the offer who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the deliberations publicly. Trump had vowed throughout the campaign to use his presidential power to appoint a special prosecutor to probe his Democratic rival for both her reliance on a private email server as secretary of state and what he called pay-forplay schemes involving the Clinton Foundation.

Be safe if you travel this Thanksgiving

Thursday is Thanksgiving, an annual holiday when families come together to enjoy each other’s company and a good meal, and to give thanks for all of our blessings.

To be together on this special day, many individuals and families must travel, some long distances.

According to Illinois State Police, today, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, marks the beginning of the busy holiday travel period. Area roadways and interstates will be especially crowded these next few days as motorists make their way to and from Thanksgiving celebrations.

AAA estimates that 48.7 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend.

Most of those travelers, almost 90 percent, will drive to their destinations, according to AAA. Of course, we want everyone to be able to enjoy this holiday season safely.

That means following the rules of the road, including obeying speed limits; fastening your seat belts; turning your cell phones off while driving and eliminating other distractions; watching out for other drivers; and, of course, driving sober.

“During the holiday driving period, there will be a large volume of traffic on the roadways,” Illinois State Police District Chicago Commander Capt. David Byrd said in a news release. “We will be increasing patrols to watch for motorists who may be driving in an unsafe manner.”

State police and local police departments will be out in force this holiday season, conducting roadside safety checks and other traffic enforcement details.

“Our number one goal over the holiday weekend is to reduce the number of fatalities on Illinois roadways,” ISP Col. Tad Williams said in the news release. “We ask that motorists think twice about safe driving habits before getting behind the wheel. Please watch your speed, buckle up, and don’t drive distracted or while under the influence.”

The nation is a day away from Thanksgiving, a holiday that increasingly is under siege, despite its prominence in the history and mythology of this country. This has less to do with how the holiday story of Pilgrims and Native Americans is perceived. Rather, we are thinking about “Christmas creep.”

Christmas creep is defined as the tendency for advertising and decorations associated with the Dec. 25 holiday to appear earlier and earlier. Or as Wikipedia puts it, Christmas creep “is a merchandising phenomenon in which merchants and retailers exploit the commercialized status of Christmas by introducing Christmas-themed merchandise or decorations before the traditional start of the holiday shopping season, which in the United States is on the day after Thanksgiving.”

It’s a phenomenon that has

been building. Most of the time, Halloween has helped serve as a roadblock when it comes to Christmas creep. But the public saw Christmas creep in stores even before the jack-o-lanterns, ghosts and black cats came down.

And perhaps it’s worse on television, where packages are seen with red ribbon or holly-jolly people wearing sweaters before there’s even a hint of frost in the air or a brightly colored leaf dropping from the tree.

Do we have to trample over Thanksgiving to get consumers ramped up for the holiday season?

We don’t think so. And we’re not alone here. “Six out of 10 Americans [63 percent] are annoyed or very annoyed when holiday items appear in the store before Halloween,” according to RichRelevance’s third-annual Holiday Shopping Survey. But this number is dropping. In 2014,

71 percent of those responding felt this way.

The same survey also found more people had softened their stances on stores being open on Thanksgiving. In 2014, 65 percent of Americans surveyed were annoyed or very annoyed about shopping on the holiday while this year 55 percent remained opposed to the idea.

Maybe there’s no pushing back against Christmas creep. The National Retail Federation says more than 40 percent of Americans begin their holiday shopping before Halloween. But they can do so without having the baubles and trappings of the holiday announcing that Christmas is coming.

Christmas and the holiday season will be here before you know it. But let’s allow Thanksgiving to bask a little in the spotlight before we turn the page.

You want to say it’s just your imagination inflating random badness into a narrative of racist white bully boys and girls feeling free to vent their hatred now that one of their own has come to power. One tends to see what one is looking for, after all.

But if this is just imagination, there’s a lot of it going around.

A black woman in a Wal-Mart parking lot said she was called a racial slur and told to go “back to Africa” by a truck full of white men who yelled “Make America white again!” before throwing cups full of chewing tobacco saliva on her.

A black woman in Charlottereports holding the door for an older white man in a veteran’s hat. She said, “Thank you for your service.” He said, “At least you [expletive] are grateful for something.”

Racist messages are sent to black freshmen at the University of Pennsylvania. On a train in Oregon, a group of teenagers gang up on a Muslim woman, calling her a terrorist and saying that Trump will deport her. A Latina woman in Texas says she was walking her baby in the park when a white woman in a truck sped by yelling, “White power!” In Raleigh, a man said he and his boyfriend were called a slur for homosexuals in another episode of drive-by hate.

In Durham, graffiti declares “Black lives doesn’t matter.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center said it recorded 447 incidents of hateful intimidation and vandalism in the first five days after the election. Many perpetrators explicitly invoked Trump. SPLC president Richard Cohen told USA Today that the haters are now “feeling their oats.”

I can testify to that. Shortly before the election, I received in response to a column on Trump an email from “Matt,” which said things like “I want you to read about your mom being raped by Muslim terrorists and then

see her burned alive in a cage.” I am hardly a stranger to hate, but “Matt” represents a new level of sickness that has become sadly familiar in the last year and a half.

With apologies to Stephen Stills, there’s something happening here; what it is ain’t exactly clear.

No, it’s not slavery, nor is it Holocaust. But it is something. That much, we can no longer doubt.

And I am reminded of German Jews who watched a monumental evil gather itself against them, all the while assuring one another that things weren’t as bad as they seemed, that their country would soon return to its senses. Meantime, the boxcars were lining up.

To recall their response to a world suddenly grown ominous and strange is to wonder at our own. Maybe we are too alarmist.

Or maybe we’re not alarmist enough.

Trump’s climate plan might not be disastrous

The election of Donald Trump and Republican majorities in both houses have terrified environmentalists and climate campaigners, who have declared the next four years will be a “disaster.”

Fear is understandable. We have much to learn about the new administration’s plans. But perhaps surprisingly, what little we know offers some cause for hope.

It should not need to be restated in 2016 that climate change is real and mostly man-made. It is hard to know whether Trump will acknowledge this.

He has called global warming a “hoax” perpetrated by the Chinese, but stated this was a joke; he denied the existence of climate change during the campaign, but supported global warming action as recently as 2009.

What really matters is not rhetoric but policy. So far, we know Trump will drop the Paris climate change treaty.

This is far from the world-ending event that some suggest and offers an opportunity for a smarter approach.

Even ardent supporters acknowledge the Paris treaty by itself will do little to rein in global warming. The United Nations estimates if every country were to make every single promised carbon cut between 2016 and 2030 to the

fullest extent and there was no cheating, carbon dioxide emissions would still only be cut by one-hundredth of what is needed to keep temperature rises below 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius). The Paris treaty’s 2016-30 pledges would reduce temperature rises around 0.09 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century. If maintained throughout the rest of the century, temperature rises would be cut by 0.31 degrees Fahrenheit.

At the same time, these promises will be costly. Trying to cut carbon dioxide, even with an efficient tax, makes cheap energy more expensive – and this slows economic growth.

My calculations using the best peer-reviewed economic models show the cost of the Paris promises – through slower gross domestic product growth from higher energy costs – would reach $1 trillion to $2 trillion every year from 2030. U.S. vows alone – to cut greenhouse-gas emissions 26 percent to 28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025 – would reduce GDP by more than $150 billion annually. So Trump’s promise to dump Paris will matter very little to temperature rises, and it will stop the pursuit of an expensive dead end.

However, Paris was a well-meaning – if flawed – attempt to address a genuine global issue. With no international climate policies at all, it is probable we would see a temperature rise of per-

haps 7 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century. The U.S. needs to find a smarter solution. Climate economists have found green energy R&D investment would be a much more efficient approach.

This is very much in line with Trump’s campaign promise of “investment in research and development across the broad landscape of academia” and with its suggestion we could develop “energy sources and power production that alleviates the need for dependence on fossil fuels.”

This investment in U.S. ingenuity could help innovate the price of green energy down below fossil fuels. Only then will we truly be able to stop climate change.

Statements by Trump’s campaign also indicate the next administration will create a global development and aid policy that recognizes climate is one problem among many.

Asked about global warming, the campaign responded, “Perhaps the best use of our limited financial resources should be in dealing with making sure that every person in the world has clean water. Perhaps we should focus on eliminating lingering diseases around the world like malaria. Perhaps we should focus on efforts to increase food production to keep pace with an ever-growing world population.”

This would be a big change. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development analyzed almost all aid from the United States and other rich nations and found about one-third is climate-related aid.

This is immoral when 2 billion people suffer from malnutrition, 700 million live in extreme poverty and 2.4 billion are without clean drinking water and sanitation. These problems can be tackled effectively today, helping many more people more dramatically than “climate aid” could.

Despite its length, and for all of its heat and bluster, the election campaign left many unanswered questions and understandable concerns about the president-elect’s positions on climate change, aid and development.

But, surprisingly, there is now an opportunity. To seize it, the Trump administration needs to go beyond just dumping the ineffective Paris agreement, to an innovation-based green energy approach that will harness U.S. ingenuity. Far from being a disaster, such a policy could mean a real solution to climate change and help the world’s worst-off more effectively.

A few days ago, a black woman I know got a text from a friend who asked what she’d be wearing “to the slave auction in January.”

Another friend, who is white, wrote that she is “seriously picturing trains to Auschwitz. I can’t convey how seriously.”

These are the kinds of conversations I find myself having in a world suddenly grown ominous and strange. You try to keep a level head, to remind yourself and others that the tragedies alluded to – slavery and the Holocaust – are unique. They are not going to repeat.

We must not be too alarmist.

But the hits just keep on coming.

The other day, my brother reported seeing a pickup truck emblazoned with the Confederate battle flag tooling down the road in L.A. I lived in that city for 34 years, he’s lived there 47. Neither of us can recall ever seeing that before. A few days later, he tells me some random white lady screamed a racial slur at him – just a word, no other commentary – because she didn’t like his driving.

Bus driver arrested after crash; city mourns 5 kids

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A school bus driver was behind bars Tuesday after a crash killed five youngsters and plunged Chattanooga, Tennessee, into mourning over what the mayor called the “most unnatural thing in the world” – a parent losing a child.

Police said Johnthony Walker, 24, was speeding along a narrow, winding road Monday afternoon with 35 elementary school students aboard when he wrapped the bus around a tree. Walker was arrested and charged with five counts of vehicular homicide.

Reeling from the tragedy, Chattanoogans lined up to donate blood and created a memorial of flowers and stuffed toys at the crash scene.

At an evening prayer vigil, a local church overflowed and a gospel choir cried out in booming song. Preachers and officials spoke of grief, strength and faith.

Children the same age as those who died were talking, getting antsy and playing a little in the capacity-filled lobby. Reality intruded, however, as an usher walked a tearful woman through the crowd. “This woman needs a seat. She lost her daughter,” he said.

Parents who send their children off to school every day struggled to come to grips with the shock and break the news to their loved ones.

Butchee said it wasn’t the first time he heard about a bus speeding. “I think it should wake up more bus drivers to be more cautious because you’re dealing with a lot of kids’ lives,” she said.

Police said Walker was driving well over the posted 30 mph limit when he lost control of the bus, which was not equipped with seat belts. He was jailed

on $107,500 bail for a court appearance Nov. 29 on charges that included reckless driving and reckless endangerment.

It was not immediately known whether he had a lawyer.

The hospital said 12 children remained hospitalized Tuesday: six in critical condition and six stable.

Dr. Darvey Koller, a pediatric emergency room physician at Children’s Hospital at Erlanger, said identifying the students after the crash was a lengthy process in some cases.

“Many of them were scared or too dazed to talk to us,” Koller said at a news conference Tuesday. “Because of their young age, many of them were unable to spell their names, did not know their birthdays or even their parents’ names – several said ‘Momma’ when they were asked what their name was.”

Hospital staff photographed each child and showed the images to teachers to figure out identities, he said.

Three of the children killed were in fourth grade, one was in first grade and another in kindergarten, said Kirk Kelly, interim superintendent of Hamilton County schools.

Their families were notified, but their names were not released. All the children aboard went to Woodmore Elementary School.

Hiatt making changes for Barbs

sports@daily-chronicle.com DEKALB – Inside a hot, padded room tucked into the corner of DeKalb High School’s sprawling building, you can find first-year head coach Sam Hiatt demonstrating techniques with the help of new assistant coach JD Oliva.

This instruction has been a focal point of the changes Hiatt has made since becoming the head coach.

“The biggest change so far has to be the difficulty of practices,” junior Jacobe Schmerbach said. “Coach [Hiatt]’s practices are not as long as the practices we did last season, but they are more intense. They’re filled with a lot of technique. There is more instruction packed into a shorter period of time.”

Hiatt recognizes that wrestling is

a constantly growing and evolving sport. He appreciates the effort that it takes to wrestle in the modern era.

“The kind of commitment that these guys have put in is much more than the wrestlers of 20 years ago,” Hiatt said. “Wrestling is a year-round sport now. Between the actual season, offseason weight training and the wrestling clubs, it takes a lot of effort just to compete.”

Hiatt spent eight seasons as an assistant with the Barbs before being named head coach. Hiatt recently got his teaching degree in physical education. From the moment he decided that he wanted to be a teacher and coach, he dreamed of becoming the head varsity coach for the Barbs.

“Working here for so long, I looked up to so many different coaches,” Hiatt said. “There’s a great history here. I know the kids here. This is

where I wanted to be – it is a dream job.

“Wrestling is huge here, and a lot of people are a part of it. The two middle school teams (Clinton Rosette and Huntley) are combining now to make one big team. Our middle school wrestlers have been competing and winning state championships. That only elevates what we do here at the high school.”

Schmerbach is just as excited as his coach for the upcoming season.

“I expect at least a state qualification for myself,” Schmerbach said. “I almost expect a state place. As long as I put in more work than anyone else, face my opponents one at a time without overestimating or underestimating anyone and keep a level head in school, I think I can make it happen.

“As a team, I think that we will do

great things. I expect us to win our regional and our sectional. I think we can place in state.”

One thing that Hiatt is particularly proud of is how hard his team works in the classroom.

“We have some smart kids,” Hiatt said. “There is so much to wrestling.

It isn’t just strength and wanting it. It is discipline in practice and working on technique. There is so much learning that has to go on.

“Us as coaches have been wrestling for 30 years, and we are still learning new things. We have a few kids with some really high GPAs. We are really proud of that fact. We want our kids to be all-around good kids.”

The Barbs will open their season when they host Oswego East on Wednesday. The meet starts at 5 p.m.

Sycamore stays perfect with win over rival DeKalb

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – An experienced Sycamore boys bowling team kept its perfect season going, sweeping rival DeKalb, 3,623-2,893, and improving to 4-0.

Spartans coach Aaron Williams says that this is the best team that he has ever coached at Sycamore.

“Confidence wise, this is big for us,” Williams said. “We’re trying to beat our own scores. We are a good team. Our kids are experienced and we have a lot of seniors. They’ve been bowling together since pee-wee league.

This is the best team I have ever had because not only are they good skillwise, but they pick each other up and support one another.”

Leading the way for the Spartans was senior Trevor Smith. Smith rolled 216, 195 and 269.

Smith said that his strong first game allowed him to experiment with his second and surge on his third game.

“That second game I was able to mess around with different balls and techniques,” Smith said. “I ended up switching back to what I rolled on my first game and dialed it in a bit and rolled a nice third game.”

Smith, like Williams, is very optimistic about the direction of the Spartan program this season.

“This is what we have been building since my freshman year,” Smith said. “It means everything to be able to bowl with the same guys.

It’s all about the mental game. It provides a level of comfort that you couldn’t get any other way.”

The Barbs (1-3) are talented, but young. Allen Collins, coach of the Barbs, said that his lone senior, Donald “DJ” Stiles has stepped up for the Barbs. Stiles had a high game of 222 in rolling a 586 series.

“He has really come a long way,” Collins said. “[Stiles] was a guy who came to us as a freshman rolling in the 60s and 80s. We didn’t know if he would ever break 100. Now he’s been shooting in the 200s for us. He’s stepped up to the plate for us. We named him team captain this season because he does a really nice job of showing the young guys what it takes to be a leader.”

Collins also is looking forward to improvement from Nicklaus Eberly and Logan Frazier, a pair of sophomores that spent a little time on varsity last season.

“They’re young and adapting to the mental part of the game,” Collins said of Eberly and Frazier. “It’s tough when you come in and you have an elite team like Sycamore to compete with. They’re going to be really good. If you can hold your own against them, especially with a young team, you’re doing really well.”

quarterback Connor Shaw in training camp before Shaw broke his leg in the third preseason game. Fales went 4 for 10 for 69 yards in the preseason finale before being cut and reuniting in Baltimore with former Bears coach Marc Trestman. He was fired as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator last month.

General manager Phil Emery selected the San Jose State alum in the sixth round of the 2014 draft, but he never played in a regular-season game for the Bears.

None of the Bears’ current healthy quarterbacks – Barkley, Fales or Woodrum – is considered a realistic option to replace Cutler should the Bears part with their veteran quarterback at the end of the year.

If so, it would mark the end of one of the most scrutinized careers in Bears history, starting when, in 2009, GM Jerry Angelo traded Kyle

Orton, two first-round picks and a third-rounder for the Broncos’ quarterback and a fifth-rounder.

“Jerry gave up a lot, but that’s what you gotta do to get a guy who’s supposed to be your man,” said Greg Gabriel, the Bears’ director of college scouting from 2001-10. “Did [Cutler] take them where they wanted to go with him at quarterback?

No. So from that standpoint, it didn’t work out.

“Is he physically better than probably (anybody) they’ve had in years and years and years? Absolutely. But for a ton of reasons – part of it is he has a different offensive coordinator almost every year – he’s never been able to settle in.”

Note: The Bears signed cornerback De’Vante Bausby and receiver Dres Anderson to the practice squad and waived receiver Darius Jennings from it.

Carter-Williams hoping to return next week

jcowley@suntimes.com DENVER – Michael Carter-Williams is looking to make life difficult on his coach sooner than later.

The fourth-year guard suffered a bone bruise on his left knee and sprained his left wrist on Halloween night in Brooklyn, and the prognosis was a four- to six-week recovery time.

According to Carter-Williams, it’s looking more like, “that fouror maybe 41/2-week” period, as the 25-year-old said Tuesday that he’s looking to return next week as long as there are no setbacks.

“I’m definitely ahead of schedule,” Carter-Williams said. “My knee feels great. I just got to find the measure between how hard I can go without hurting it furthermore, so I’m just testing the limit right now. Just trying to get back to 100 percent.”

And when he does, coach Fred Hoiberg and his staff will have a

tough decision to make with the backcourt rotation.

Jerian Grant has jumped into the picture with his recent play, as did rookie Denzel Valentine. There also is the outside shooting element of Isaiah Canaan, and what he brings off the bench.

With Rajon Rondo, Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade each seeing backcourt time, Michael it suddenly could get Carter-Williams very crowded back there.

“I’ve done lateral movements,” Carter-Williams said. “I’ve done pretty much everything. Just trying to maintain the recovery and keeping the swelling down. I’m going to wait pretty much until I’m pain-free to play.

“But I would say I’m closer to the four-[week period]. I feel good. My wrist is still a little bit swollen, but it feels pretty good. It’s almost back

While Jay Cutler continued to have his troublesome right shoulder examined Tuesday, the Bears looked to the past to prepare for life without their veteran quarterback.

Sources confirmed that the Bears will sign David Fales, the quarterback they cut after the final preseason game, from the Ravens’ practice squad. Fales’ return to the Bears’ 53-man roster reinforces the reality that Cutler will miss time – if not the rest of the season – after injuring his shoulder Sunday against the Giants.

Cutler likely won’t play Sunday against the Titans. His typical Thursday news conference was not included on the Bears’ interview schedule for his week, a typical move when he is expected to miss

a Sunday game.

Whether Cutler will be lost for the season – perhaps ending his Bears career – likely will come into clearer view Wednesday, when the Bears return to practice.

Fales adds depth to the Bears’ quarterback room that includes Matt Barkley and practice squadder Josh Woodrum, who signed only a week David Fales ago.

Barkley, who went 6 for 15 for 81 yards replacing Brian Hoyer when he broke his left arm in Green Bay, figures to start Sunday. Fales, who already knows the terminology of Dowell Loggains’ offense, would be the second-stringer against the Titans.

The countdown to the court appearance

It has been only a few days – last Saturday, to be exact – since the Plainfield North football team celebrated an 18-17 overtime victory over Fenwick in the Class 7A semifinal game at Triton College in River Grove.

Somehow, it feels like an eternity.

The controversial ending has caused a stir statewide, and everyone seemingly has an opinion about what should or should not happen.

North, you will recall, tied the game on Connor Peplow’s field goal on an untimed down the IHSA later said should not have been awarded.

The IHSA also said, however, that the decision of the game officials is final, and North will face East St. Louis in the 7A championship game at 4 p.m.

Saturday at Memorial Stadium on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign.

Fenwick did not agree, and it filed a complaint and restraining order Monday in Cook County court against the IHSA. Hopefully, the situation will be resolved in the court appearance that is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

“We are mindful that in addition to the impact this issue has on Fenwick High School, Plainfield North High School and East St. Louis High School, it also has the potential to overshadow the accomplishments of the other 14 teams who will play for state championships this weekend in Champaign. Given that, we will refrain from further comment until

after Wednesday’s proceedings.”

You probably have heard the opinion expressed in other media outlets, on social media or on talk radio that Plainfield North coach Tim Kane should do the right thing – call his players together and explain to them that Fenwick rightfully won the game, so the Tigers will not be going to Champaign.

What bothers me is that suggests Kane is some sort of villain in all of this. He is anything but that. His team abided by the rules as they were enforced that day. The Tigers played their hearts out until they won the game on Dillon McCarthy’s two-point conversion run in overtime.

The officials are entrusted with determining the rules that apply in each situation and how they should be interpreted. Mistaken or not, once they do that, the game continues until they say it is over.

Are there coaches out there who would do what some on the outside looking in are saying Kane should do?

Maybe, but I can’t imagine there are many.

You can’t help but feel sorry for

Fenwick – and East St. Louis – as well. But if the situation were reversed, and if Plainfield North were taking the IHSA to court, I would not change my opinion. Fenwick in that case would be the rightful semifinal winner.

I mentioned in a column over the weekend that if the North-Fenwick game had been the state championship game with the entire state watching, rather than a semifinal, it would be one of those games that would be discussed for a hundred years.

That needs amending. What happened last Saturday, what will happen in court Wednesday morning and what will happen in the 4 p.m.

Saturday time slot at Champaign will be etched into permanent memory.

The only thing I feel certain about right now is that whatever happens, our old friend Dave Bernhard will present a professional analysis of the situation when he sits down Saturday afternoon to call the Class 7A championship game on the IHSA network.

NCAA: Notre Dame must vacate wins after academic misconduct

The Associated Press SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Brian Kelly’s worst season at Notre Dame took an embarrassing turn Tuesday as the NCAA announced that academic misconduct orchestrated by a student athletic trainer will cost the storied program all 21 victories from the 2012-13 seasons, including the 12-0 run that vaulted the Fighting Irish into the national championship game against Alabama.

It marked just the fourth time the NCAA has cited Notre Dame for a major rules violation. The vacated games include Notre Dame’s 12 victories in 2012, their best regular season since winning their last national championship in 1988. The season finished with an embarrassing 42-14 loss to the Crimson Tide in the title game and the revelation that linebacker Manti Te’o had been the victim of a fake girlfriend hoax.

The school ripped the NCAA for its decision to vacate the wins and immediately said it would appeal. The Rev. John Jenkins, the university president, said the NCAA has never before vacated records in such a case.

“We believe that imposition of the vacation of records penalty without serious underlying institutional misconduct will not primarily punish those responsible for the misconduct, but rather will punish coaches, student-athletes and indeed the entire institution who did nothing wrong and, with regard to this case, did everything right,” Jenkins said. He noted the NCAA has since voted to change the rule that brought this case under NCAA jurisdiction rather than leaving such decisions to individual schools.

The Division I Committee on Infractions panel also put Notre Dame on probation for a year and ordered a $5,000 fine, penalties the school agreed with. There were no bowl or scholarship punishments.

Simplify sugar pies

When planning for Thanksgiving, don’t forget the pecan pie

Leaves are changing, the weather is cooling and the smell of fall lingers in the air. Pumpkins are appearing on doorsteps, and families are beginning to plan their Thanksgiving menus. Pecan pie always should be on the list.

Pecan pie can be difficult to describe. It’s not a fruit pie or a cream pie, and it’s not a traditional custard. It falls into a loosely defined category most familiar to our Southern friends – the sugar pie.

Sugar pies can be found in many styles and variations, but at its roots, a sugar pie is a single-crust pie with a baked filling of sugar, eggs and flavorings.

The sugar used can be granulated sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, maple syrup, honey or molasses, depending on what you want your standout flavors to be. Pecan pies commonly are made with corn syrup, which lends a neutral flavor that helps the nuttiness of the pecans shine through, but substituting maple syrup can give richness and complexity without altering the texture.

Because the filling of sugar pies can be very soft, the pecans play an important textural role. These nuts can be added whole, chopped or a combination of both. They will soak up some of the filling, which will make them tender enough to cut with a fork, but with enough bite to contrast the soft, creamy filling. And what are rich pecans and a sweet filling without a flaky, buttery pie crust? Our all-butter crust is partly baked before filling, which helps keep it crisp despite the wet interior. Let cool to room temperature in the pan on a rack before filling. Keep the oven temperature at 400 degrees F. Spread the nuts in an even layer over the bottom of the partially baked pie shell. Stir the brown sugar and flour together in a mixing bowl until well blended. Add the corn syrup, eggs, butter, vanilla extract and salt and blend well. Pour the mixture over the nuts, disturbing the nuts as little as possible.

Place the pie on a baking sheet and bake until the center is softly set, 30-35 minutes. Let the pie rest for at least 20 minutes before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Continue to add the liquid in small amounts until the mixture transitions from a slightly powdery appearance with chunks of butter, to a gravelly rough dough. When the dough just holds together when pressed to the side of the bowl, remove from the bowl and turn out onto a lightly floured work surface. At this stage, do not add too much liquid or overwork the dough, as it will cause your crust to become tough.

12 individual Keebler graham cracker pie shells or homemade 3-inch pie shells 1 cup pecan halves plus more for decorating the tops (may substitute walnuts) 4 tablespoons butter, melted 2/3 cup granulated white sugar 1/2 cup dark corn syrup 2 large eggs, beaten 1/8 teaspoon sea salt 4 ounces 70 percent bittersweet chocolate, melted

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Put two tablespoons of nuts into each unbaked pie shell. Set aside.

Combine butter, granulated sugar, corn syrup, eggs, salt, chocolate, vanilla and Kahlua and stir until well mixed.

Place the mini pie crusts on a half sheet pan. Pour the pie mixture on top of nuts just until the first line of the crust (if you made your own crust, this is about 1/4 inch from the top). Do not overfill as they will puff up as they bake. Decorate the tops of the pies with a few nuts.

Place the sheet pan in the center rack of the oven. Bake about 20 minutes or until cooked through, a little puffy and crusty on top. Let cool on a rack for at least 3 hours.

Refrigerate leftover pie.

Serve warm with whipped cream or a small scoop of vanilla ice cream if you choose. The pies also are good cold the next day.

Dressing, without the gluten

We all have our favorite winter dishes, and mine is stuffing – or dressing, technically, since I don’t stuff it in a turkey.

The classic flavors lull me into feeling like I’m in white-capped mountains. Rosemary, sage, thyme, dried cranberries and a little sausage work winter-wonderland magic for me.

My oldest daughter also is a fan.

Valentine also is gluten intolerant.

For several years, I simply made my holiday dressing with dried gluten-free bread cubes, but we wanted other options that didn’t involve fussing with gluten-free breads, whose texture can be unpredictable in a dressing recipe. This Wild Rice Stovetop Dressing fits the bill.

It has all the classic taste of my grandma’s holiday stuffing, and none of the gluten, so my daughter can enjoy it. Plus, it’s pulled together in less than 30 minutes in one pan on the stove. Easy. One link of turkey sausage is enough to add flavor and richness, so this dish is comforting without being overly heavy. Note, you can omit sausage entirely and

use vegetable broth to make this dish vegetarian. Typical holiday herbs – rosemary, thyme and sage – can be dried or fresh, so use whatever you are buying for the rest of your meal.

Cubed butternut squash adds a touch of welcomed color, sweetness and vitamins – feel free to change up the squash/rice ratio and add more if you want a more veg-leaning side.

A small sprinkling of dried cranberries and pecans complete the holiday touch.

Wild Rice Stovetop Dressing

Wild Rice Stovetop Dressing Start to finish: 25 minutes Servings: 4

1 teaspoon olive oil 1 link sweet Italian turkey sausage, casing removed 1/2 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup chopped yellow onion 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup butternut squash cubes 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, or 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped 1/2 teaspoon dried rubbed sage, or 1 teaspoon fresh sage, chopped 1 teaspoon dried rosemary, or 2 teaspoons fresh chopped rosemary

1¼ cup wild rice blend (usually wild rice and basmati mixed) 3/4 cup chicken or turkey broth 3/4 cup water 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup chopped toasted pecans salt and pepper Cook the sausage in the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium high heat until meat is golden, about 4 minutes. Add in the celery and onion and cook until softened, about 3 more minutes. Add the garlic, squash cubes, herbs and rice blend and sauté for 1 minute.

ture to high and bring to a boil.

Once boiling, stir the rice once, and then cover and reduce the temperature to low and allow to simmer gently, covered tightly, for 15 minutes. Turn off the heat, toss in the dried cranberries (quickly covering again) and let sit covered tightly for 5 minutes.

Remove the lid, stir, taste for seasoning, add toasted pecans and serve.

When I have a lot of people coming over, I love to make mini pies, or “pie cups.” I coined the name “pie cup” when I created a “pie program” for one of my restaurants and vowed to make pie the new cupcake in New York City.

Since then, the mini, hand-held pie has exploded in popularity. The beauty of the mini pies is they are portable, easy to make and the perfect portion size.

Most people I know don’t make their own pie because they are afraid to make the pie dough from scratch. There is so much pressure on the cook for Thanksgiving that the holiday is not the time to learn how to make pie dough. This recipe offers the option of using pre-made graham-cracker crusts. If you already make your own pie dough, you can make this pie in mini pie shells or a muffin pan.

Once you have the pie crust is taken care of, you will understand the meaning of “easy as pie”: Assembling the filling requires just a bowl and a fork.

DAILY CHRONICLE The Alpha Rho Eta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society welcomed 27 new members this fall at Kishwaukee College. The new members were inducted during a candle-lighting ceremony Nov. 15 in Jenkins Auditorium at the college.

The ceremony was presided over by current officers of the Alpha Rho Eta chapter: Gabbie Cultra, president; Justin Otte, vice president; Andrew Kozinski, recording officer; Jair Mahali Granados Ramirez, public relations officer; and Jashawna Robinson, hallmark officer. The KC chapter faculty adviser is Allison von Ende.

During the ceremony, inductees and their families and friends enjoyed a guitar performance by Tim Lockman. The keynote speaker was Laurie Hoecherl, mathematics instructor at Kishwaukee College. Hoecherl also teaches leadership courses and is a former faculty adviser for the Alpha Rho Eta chapter at Kish College.

KC offers online SAT test preparation class

on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada and other countries around the world. More than 2.5 million students have been inducted since its founding, with approximately 135,000 students inducted annually.

The society offers opportunities for

scholarships, intellectual enrichment, and personal development through programs based on the society’s hallmarks of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

To be eligible for membership, a student must complete a minimum of 12 hours of college level course work and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on 4.0 scale. Students must maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment in the two-year college.

Huntley students of the month named

DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee College Continuing Education Department is offering online courses to help area high school students prepare for the SAT college entrance exams.

The course, offered through partnership with nationally recognized Ed2Go, will begin Dec. 14. The course also will be available in early 2017 with start dates of Jan. 18 and Feb. 15.

The online SAT Test Preparation course will include two parts: Part 1 covers reading, writing, English and science and Part 2 covers math. The SAT – which is the entrance exam that will be administered at Illinois high schools this year – had a change in both the verbal and math questions in March 2016. The online course is designed to prepare students for those changes.

The online course is an option for students who want to get the best preparation for the SAT exam but also are involved in extracurricular activities or hold part-time jobs in addition to their studies. An online course allows students to log in and complete the course work at their own pace and on a day and time that is convenient for their busy schedules.

The cost for the entire course is $174; the cost for students opting to register for only one of the available sessions is $109.

28 Healthy behaviors improve odds for longer life Note to readers: This column originally ran in November 2014.

Dear Dr. K: Eat right. Don’t smoke. Stay

active. Can you give me some motivation to keep up these healthy behaviors?

Dear Reader: I think I get your message.

This column frequently presents information from scientific studies about healthy lifestyle.

But information alone might not be enough to change behavior – and it’s hard to change behavior, particularly when you enjoy it. Information doesn’t equal motivation.

I’m not an expert on how to motivate people, but here’s how I motivate myself.

I ask myself what I want from life. In terms of health, I want to live as long as possible, free of suffering and with my faculties intact. Then I’ll be able to love and be loved, and to enjoy the things I most enjoy, for as long as possible.

So the next question is: How do I get there? And I don’t mean how do I guarantee I’ll live a long life, free of suffering and decrepitude. Because there are no guarantees in life, only odds. You want to know what the odds are you’ll achieve your goals, and what you can do to improve your odds. At least that’s what I want to know.

How do I find out what my odds are, and how to improve them? I believe in science. I don’t believe any single scientific study is infallible, no matter how impressive it seems. But I believe the collective information from many well-done studies is the best, and maybe the only, way I’ll ever learn what I need to know.

For example, in a recently published study, a research team followed nearly 17,000 men and women, aged 17 years and older, for 18 years. They meticulously

They compared study participants who ate a healthy diet, got enough physical activity, drank alcohol in moderation and never smoked to those who engaged in none of these healthy behaviors. The first group lived an average of 11 years longer.

It’s just the latest study that says the lifestyle we call “healthy” really is good for our health.

There’s more good news. The same healthy lifestyle practices that cause you to live longer make those extra years healthier. Healthy lifestyle does not just prolong your decrepitude.

Even more good news: You don’t have to banish all unhealthy practices from your life, always and forever. What matters is your usual behavior. Take me, for example. Does Doctor K always follow the healthy lifestyle advice he gives in this column? Some questions answer themselves.

Information motivates me – and so does emotion. If family and friends encourage me along the path I’ve chosen, and if I don’t want to disappoint them, I’m more likely to follow that path.

I hope this advice will help you find the motivation you need to stay healthy.

I am a 9-yearold girl in third grade. I have problems making friends.

It’s important I get help in making girl friends. I have three hopeless brothers I really don’t like.

My mom said I should tell you what I do like – math, science, dolls and TV. I have crazy hair.

She knows how important common interests can be in forming relationships. Because you like math, science, dolls and TV, gravitate toward girls who like them, too. If you do, you may find some of them are receptive.

Remember – all you really need is one friend you can confide in.

As to the rest of your question, at your age I wasn’t part of the popular crowd. I was shy and terrible at sports, so I spent many hours alone in my room reading books.

They kept me company and widened my horizons beyond my immediate neighborhood. People at my grammar school probably thought I was weird, too, but many people who become successful as adults start out that way.

You and I have something else in common. I was self-conscious about my hair, too. It was curly and hard to handle because I hadn’t yet learned to style it. But as I grew older, I learned to manage it – as I’m sure you will.

And when I reached my mid-teens I found it easier to make female friends. A valuable lesson I learned was to be a friend when someone needs one, and to practice character traits I admired in others, such as kindness and honesty.

One aspect of bridge that separates the top players from others is taking full advantage of the useful spot cards (2 through 10) -- in particular, knowing when a low spot is a winner.

How is that relevant in today’s deal? After West leads the club king, how should South proceed in four spades? Did West have a more successful opening lead?

South’s jump to four spades was a slight overbid with a six-loser hand, but we tend to bid game with any excuse. Of course, here, if South had chosen to rebid three no-trump, North would surely have passed, and declarer would have had nine top tricks. (Also, there was a case for West’s making a takeout double over one spade, not a two-club overcall. It would not have made much difference here, but the double would have been more flexible.)

In four spades, though, South has only those same nine tricks; he is faced with four losers: two hearts, one diamond and one club. Is there any hope?

Look at those interesting club spots. Declarer should win the first trick, draw trumps and return the club nine. Suppose West finds the best defense, taking the trick and shifting to the heart queen. South wins on the board, leads the club 10 and discards a heart loser. Yes, West takes that trick and cashes a heart winner, but South’s diamond loser evaporates on the now-high club eight.

If West had led anything other than a club, the contract would have failed.
