How Kellogg worked with ‘Breakfast Council’ of ‘independent experts’ to tout its cereal

NEW YORK – On its website, Kellogg touted a “Breakfast Council” of “independent experts” who helped guide the company’s nutritional efforts.

Nowhere did it say this: The maker of Froot Loops paid the council members and fed them talking points, according to a copy of a contract and emails obtained by The Associated Press.

The company paid the experts an average of $13,000 a year, prohibited them from offering media services for products “competitive or negative to cereal” and required them to engage in “nutrition influencer outreach” on social media or with colleagues.

“I’m still feeling great from my bowl of cereal & milk this morning! Mini-Wheats are my fave,” a dietitian on the council posted during a Twitter chat with Kellogg. Another council member and dietitian chimed in to say they were her favorite, too, and included a photo of the cereal.

For Kellogg, the council – in existence between 2011 and this year – deftly blurred the lines between cereal promotion and impartial nutrition guidance. The company used the council to teach a continuing education class for dietitians, publish an academic paper on breakfast and try to influence the government’s dietary guidelines.

Kellogg said the council’s activities were clearly sponsored.

Yoni Freedhoff, an obesity expert at the University of Ottawa who writes about industry influence in nutrition, said he didn’t believe it was clear to the public that the council members were compensated, especially since Kellogg described them as “independent.”

“It’s not an automatic leap. I don’t think people think about these conflicts that deeply,” he said.

Dayle Hayes, a dietitian who participated in the Twitter chat in 2014, said in an email that she prides herself on her ethics and transparency and that her disclosure practices have changed as standards have evolved. Based on current standards, she said she would include the word “ad” in tweets referencing Kellogg products. She said she did not share any information without appropriate disclosures.

Kellogg Co. said the experts disclosed their affiliation with the company in public engagements. Still, the company said it could see how its use of “independent” could create confusion.

It said later it decided not to continue the council, and the website page is no longer online.

Kellogg said on its website that the breakfast council helped guide the company. But it wasn’t always clear who was providing the guidance.

When Kellogg sent the council research it commissioned, Hayes expressed enthusiasm and requested language to share the information. Hayes and Sylvia Klinger, another dietitian on the council, tweeted the lines Kellogg provided verbatim. Hayes included the word “advisor” and Klinger included the word “client.”

Kellogg also supplied the experts with a “toolkit” of tweets for a promotional event in New York. When the council members received a critical email from someone they didn’t know criticizing their work with the company, the company suggested a response for that, too.

“I appreciate and share you(r) interest in the health of our children,” the suggestion read. “It’s for this very reason that I work with Kellogg.”

The council members decided not to respond.

The work with dietitians wasn’t unusual. Coca-Cola has paid dietitians who wrote columns casually suggesting mini-sodas as a snack. Disclosures said the author is a “consultant” for food and beverage companies, “including Coca-Cola.”

Jessica Levinson, a dietitian who has appeared in TV news segments for Coke and PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay, told the AP that producers were told if her healthy eating tips were sponsored. Yet the disclosures weren’t always shared with viewers.

In a segment on NBC Baltimore on “dos and don’ts” in 2009, Levinson presented bags of Fritos with dip – as an example of a “do.”

“Are those regular Fritos?” asked the reporter, indicating her surprise.

One of the breakfast council’s accomplishments was publishing an academic paper defining a “quality breakfast,” which Kellogg touted as being written by “our independent nutrition experts.”

A Kellogg employee oversaw the editing and provided feedback, including asking for the removal of a line saying a recommendation that added sugar be limited to 25 percent of calories might be “too high.”

Kellogg said the paper was a supplement and that its involvement should have been clear. It noted a disclosure said a draft was written by an agency that represents Kellogg.

The Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics said editorial rules for supplements are the same as for regular articles. The paper underwent peer review, and an editor suggested reducing or eliminating the detailed discussion of cereal, especially since the sponsor was a cereal company.

‘PHILOSOPHICAL STRUGGLE’ All eyes on Springfield with stopgap state budget set to expire Dec. 31

kcraver@shawmedia.com While all eyes were on the most divisive presidential election in recent memory, Illinois’ already lousy financial footing got worse.

A forecast revealed Wednesday during a meeting with legislative leaders concluded that the state’s deficit could grow past $5 billion by the June 30 end of the state’s 2017 fiscal year. The state’s pile of unpaid bills – which the state comptroller now pegs at $10.6 billion – could increase to $13 billion. A subsequent report from the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability increases the estimated unfunded liability for the five state-run pension systems, not including benefits, from $111 billion to $130 billion. Almost one dollar out of four in the state’s general fund goes to pay pensions, a percentage that, given no changes, is sure to increase.

What’s worse, a six-month stopgap budget that lawmakers cobbled together last June to end a budget impasse that lasted for the entire 2016 fiscal year expires Dec. 31. Without an agreement between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic leaders who control the General Assembly, the state could lapse back into operating without a budget, further raising the state deficit and lowering the state’s bond rating, which already is only a few notches above junk.

Both sides met last week at the start of the fall veto session, with more meetings likely after the Thanksgiving holiday. The positions for both sides this time around have changed little since the impasse started in May 2015, said state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles. She sits on several of the bipartisan working groups appointed to help hammer out a “grand bargain” that both sides can live with.

“I think we continue to have a philosophical struggle in the state budget between the governor and Democratic leadership in this state, but I think the governor is committed to building a framework and being sincere about what he’s looking for in this budget,” McConnaughay said.

But if that includes higher taxes in exchange for some reforms, state Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, said both sides can count him

“I’m hearing talk about a ‘grand bargain,’ a compromise, and that’s

just code for a massive tax increase,” McSweeney said “When people hear the words ‘grand bargain,’ everybody

needs to hold onto their wallets.”

State Sen. Dave Syverson, R-Rockford, said that a deal can be reached if the state’s temporary income tax is brought back to the table along with gambling expansion and business reforms such as workers’ compensation reform.

“I hope for the sake of Illinois’ future, we won’t let politics get in the way of moving Illinois forward,” he said.

Syverson said he believes lawmakers from both parties can get behind such a plan to “stop the bleeding” and tackle the state’s pile of unpaid bills.

State Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, put the blame on what he called House Speaker Mike Madigan’s unwillingness to negotiate.

“I don’t know how the state can survive until 2019,” he said. “This is a high-stakes game of poker and the speaker is willing to bet it all. It’s time for someone to slap his hand and say, ‘No, we won’t survive.’ ”

Sycamore City Council members consider 4 property tax options

SYCAMORE – Homeowners in Sycamore could see changes to their property tax bills ranging from a $9.33 decrease to a $39.42 increase based on four options Sycamore City Council members are considering for the 2016 property tax levy.

The option City Manager Brian Gregory recommended to the council Monday would mean the owner of a $200,000 home would pay $11.02 more in property taxes, or about $529.04.

The total levy would be $2,888,894.

The council is scheduled to have a public hearing for the levy Dec. 5 and vote on it during its Dec. 19 meeting. No action was taken during Monday’s meeting.

Gregory said the option to maintain the property tax levy for general operations would minimize the additional burden to taxpayers while allowing the city to fulfill its obligations to police and fire pensions.

sions would see an increase of about $110,000 to $528,471, and the amount that goes toward fire pensions would increase by $1,163 to $595,926.

He said Sycamore has historically

funded police and fire pensions at or above the state’s requirements.

Other parts of the levy would be funded the same as they were in 2015, including keeping general operations at $1,407,322 for the sixth year in a row. Before that amount was established in 2011, it had been declining because of the recession, Gregory said. “[This taxing option] means our levy increases marginally, but at the same time, it ensures that [general operations] number doesn’t erode

any further,” he said.

Council member Alan Bauer said he believes $11.02 would be a modest increase, but he still is worried for the city to be able to pay its bills while maintaining a flat general operation fund.

“My concern with that is we have contractual obligations that continue to raise the dollars that we need,” Bauer said. “They keep going up, and we are going to be extra challenged to meet those needs with the same amount of dollars we had last year.”

Gregory said maintaining a relatively flat property tax levy should allow the city to meet or exceed its fiduciary responsibilities.

“We’ve exercised a lot of fiscal restraint,” Gregory said. “We’ve cut costs; we’ve refunded bonds to try to save on the bottom line, all that toward having the flexibility to take this balanced approach. By having reserves, we’re able to look at options that don’t necessarily increase the dollars toward general operations, but at the same time do not decrease that.”

DeKalb teen faces charges after crash with semi DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – A 16-year-old DeKalb boy driving a Volkswagen Beetle faces criminal charges after a crash Friday with semitrailer west of

Sycamore.

The boy was driving east in a 2014 Volkswagen Beetle on Route 64 near the intersection of Route 64 and Motel Road shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday.

The boy entered the oncoming lane of traffic and struck a 1989 Mack Truck

that was headed west. Alvin Pitts, 65, of 7645 Hale Drive, Cherry Valley, was driving the truck.

No one was injured in the crash, but the boy fled the scene of the collision, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Police found the boy on Route 23 north of Plank Road. The boy was cited for driving without a valid license, leaving the scene of an accident, improper lane use, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana, police said.

Born: September 28, 1991 Died: November 16, 2016 Camden Luther, 25, of DeKalb, died on November 16, 2016.

He was born on September 28, 1991, in Davenport, IA to Angelique Henderson and William Luther. Camden loved food and loved to cook. He was an artist who loved to draw and loved music. He was a very philosophical young man and was a very sweet and

generous person. He touched everyone he met deeply.

Camden is survived by his mother, Angelique Henderson of Sycamore, IL; brother, Donovan Smith of Sycamore, IL; special aunt, Ava Henderson of New Hampshire; special uncle, Ramond Henderson of Sycamore, IL; and several other family members.

Predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Will Roy and Gloria Jean Henderson.

Memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. on November 23, 2016 at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Quiram Sycamore Chapel, 1245 Somonauk St, Sycamore, IL 60178 with Rev. Robert Pemberton officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service.

Stuart L. Nelson, 87, of Suwanee, Georgia, died peacefully in his sleep at home.

He was born March 16, 1929 in Sycamore, Illinois. He was the son of Reuben and Clara

Nelson. Stuart married Joyce A. Uting on July 26, 1952 in Rockford, Illinois and cherished their life together. He was a devoted father/grandfather/great grandfather.

He graduated from Sycamore H.S. in 1947 and joined the U.S. Air Force. He served 4 years in the Air Force during the Korean War. He and his wife owned Simple Simon children’s clothing store in Sycamore from 1966 - 1989. He was a member of the Lions Club for over 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Lee Ann Gibson (George) of Lilburn, Ga. and Laura Denton of Waldorf, Maryland. He has four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two sister, Barbara Hutchins & Janet McIntyre; and granddaughter, Melissa Ann Gibson.

A memorial mass will be held on Friday, November 25th in the Chapel of St. John Neuman, Lilburn, Georgia at 1:00 pm.

Workers with the City of DeKalb collect leaves from a residential area Monday in DeKalb.

DeKALB – The DeKalb City Council recently approved spending up to $260,000 to buy two ambulances for the fire department.

The City Council voted, 8-0, earlier this month to approve a plan designed to save the city $20,000 more than what was budgeted for the package. Officials had previously estimated it would cost $280,000.

The City Council rejected the 11 bids the city received from six different vendors in favor of an alternative bid submitted by Fire Service Inc., which offered the lowest price and best tradein value. The city plans to trade in two 2003 ambulances as part of the deal.

“These ambulances will greatly enhance and improve the operation of our fleet,” DeKalb Chief Eric Hicks said.

The six ambulances on the fire department’s fleet responded to 5,342 calls in 2015, Hicks told the City Council at the Nov. 9 meeting.

Over the past year, mechanical failures have affected ambulances on the fleet, leaving some temporarily out of service. Mechanical issues have affected the emergency vehicles while they were responding to calls. In one instance, an ambulance had a major mechanical failure while taking a patient to the hospital in an emergency, Hicks said.

The ambulances could be delivered in January, according to city documents.

Continued from page 3 After a year of operating without a budget, lawmakers on the June 30 final day of the 2016 fiscal year approved a deal that would fully fund state government, social services and higher education through the year’s end. Funding for K-12 education was funded through next June.

The standoff began in spring 2015 with Rauner’s veto of a deficit budget that was about $4 billion out of whack.

Rauner, who was elected in 2014 on a platform of ending Illinois’ downward spiral by enacting business- and taxpayer-friendly reforms and curtailing the power of public-sector unions, will not entertain the thought of increasing revenue without the Democrats backing some of his “Turnaround Agenda.” Democratic leaders, on the other hand, call many aspects of Rauner’s agenda hurtful to middle- and working-class people, and consider the budget and reforms to be two unrelated issues.

The governor, for now, has set aside the weakening of collective bargaining and other aspects of the Turnaround

Agenda that Democrats find particularly odious. But he has made clear that other concessions, such as a statewide property tax freeze, workers’ compensation reform, or putting constitutional amendments regarding term limits and redistricting reform on the ballot, must be part of any compromise on Republicans’ part regarding a tax increase.

The stalemate exists despite the fact that Democrats in both the House and Senate, for now, have supermajorities that could override any gubernatorial veto. The House’s supermajority of the exact 71 seats needed exists only on paper – a handful of suburban Democrats, among the most notable being Rep. Jack Franks of Marengo, vote against unbalanced budgets and tax increases.

What’s more, the GOP gained four seats in the House – including that of Franks, who was elected McHenry County Board chairman – robbing Madigan of a supermajority when the next General Assembly gets seated Jan. 11. Although the Democrats lost a handful of Senate seats, Senate President John Cullerton still controls a supermajority.

Lawmakers are scheduled to meet only three more times until the end of the

year, barring any special sessions. But a provision of the Illinois Constitution makes the first 10 days in January the most likely time that lawmakers will be asked to vote on a compromise, provided one is reached in the first place.

The number of votes needed to pass a budget increases from a simple majority – 60 in the House and 30 in the Senate – to a supermajority from the end of session May 31 to the end of the calendar year, or 67 in the House and 36 in the Senate.

But the threshold reverts back to simple majority with the new year, which would make it easier for lawmakers to pass a compromise in a lame-duck session. Re-elected lawmakers know they are “safe,” and the votes of outgoing lawmakers who have nothing to lose – and possibly something to gain in exchange – can be more easily courted.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because lawmakers exploited this to pass the ballyhooed 67 percent income tax increase.

Lawmakers in the final hours of session in January 2011, just after the gubernatorial election that former Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn won, passed the fouryear increase on a simple majority vote with the help of a dozen lawmakers leav-

ing office – six of them, including two who campaigned against a tax increase, subsequently ended up appointed to lucrative government jobs.

McConnaughay, like others before her, said that a compromise has to be reached in which the state can have a budget while enacting policies aimed at stopping people and jobs from fleeing to other states. The problem, she said, can’t be solved “on the backs of our existing tax base.”

“The sign of a good bargain is one in which everyone gets some of what they believe is important, and some things that make them unhappy,” McConnaughay said.

But lawmakers such as McSweeney, who oppose taking any more money away from taxpayers, call the whole thing “political theater” and criticize the ongoing closed-door working group meetings.

“That’s my frustration. My top concern is a lame-duck tax increase,” McSweeney said.

CHICAGO – A strike by hourly workers at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago will add another dimension to a nationwide day of protests by fast-food employees who have been pushing for a $15 hourly wage and union rights, organizers said Monday.

Thousands of workers plan to walk off the job at McDonald’s restaurants and other fast-food spots in more than 340 cities on Nov. 29, organizers said in a news release. The planned “Day of Disruption” will mark the fourth anniversary of the first protests at McDonald’s restaurants in New York.

The attention-grabbing airport strike is “going to cause complete disruption in travel plans for the day and maybe days to come,” said Kendall Fells, national organizing director of the Fight for $15 campaign. “Four decades ago, airport jobs were jobs you could live off of. Now airport jobs are just like fast-food jobs.

We’re all standing together.”

The Service Employees International Union announced Monday that hundreds of workers will strike that day at O’Hare, one of the nation’s busiest airports. The union has helped fund and staff the Fight for $15 campaign.

Funeral planned for Chicago congressman’s grandson

CHICAGO – A funeral is planned Saturday for a Chicago congressman’s grandson who was shot dead after an argument about basketball shoes.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Danny Davis said 15-year-old Javon Wilson’s funeral will be Saturday at Carey Tercentenary AME Church on Chicago’s South Side. A wake will be at 10 a.m. followed by services at 11 a.m.

A Cook County judge on Sunday denied bail for a 16-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl charged with first-degree murder in the teen’s death. Authorities said Wilson was shot in the head. Police said the two were arrested after they were identified as suspects in Friday’s shooting.

CHICAGO – A man was arrested during a performance of “Hamilton” in Chicago after audience members said he shouted “We won!” and other election-related comments from the balcony.

Chicago police said 56-year-old John Palmer of Chicago is charged with one misdemeanor count of criminal trespass in the incident Saturday.

6 Chicago firefighters ill after returning from scene of fire

CHICAGO – Authorities said six Chicago firefighters were taken to hospitals after they reported feeling ill after working to extinguish an earlier fire.

The Chicago Fire Department said firefighters had returned to the Engine 26 firehouse early Monday and several reported feeling sick. Five were taken to several different hospitals, where they were treated for chest pain and breathing problems.

WLS-TV reported that one firefighter at another firehouse also was taken to a hospital. The fire department said all are expected to be OK. The department was working to determine what caused the illnesses, but an irritant released into the air at the fire in the West Town neighborhood may be to blame. That fire was related to a furnace at a home, and everyone at the home got out safely.

He said he’s also concerned about being asked to check planes for weapons and explosives without training.

There had been concern that the strike would fall during the busiest travel days. In announcing the Nov. 29 strike, the union and workers on Monday portrayed the date as a concession to families.

“O’Hare airport workers often can’t afford a proper Thanksgiving dinner and know what it’s like to miss Thanksgiving with our families,” said baggage handler Raquel Brito, who announced the strike date. “However we respect families traveling to be together and that is why we’re holding off our strike until after the Thanksgiving holiday.”

Study finds hormones, medications in groundwater

CHAMPAIGN – Scientists at the University of Illinois said they’ve detected prescription and over-the-counter medications in groundwater in southwestern Illinois.

The university’s Prairie Research Institute study had researchers collect 58 water samples from eight springs and five cave streams during 2014 and 2015. Researcher Walt Kelly said medications and personal care products were detected in 89 percent of those samples.

Scientists said the two most common products found were triclocarbans, which are used in antibiotic soaps, and the cardiovascular drug gemfibrozil. Researchers said contaminant levels were “well below” human dosages, but they said even low levels can affect aquatic organisms.

The researchers also found hormones in 23 percent of their groundwater samples, which Kelly said “can cause a lot of damage to fish and possibly other animals.”

NEW YORK – Donald Trump held court from his perch high above Manhattan on Monday, receiving a line of former rivals, longtime allies and TV executives while overseeing a presidential transition that at times resembles a reality show like the one he once hosted.

Trump met with nearly a dozen prospective hires, all of whom were paraded in front of the cameras set up in the Trump Tower lobby as they entered an elevator to see the president-elect. Out of public view himself, he fell back on his TV star roots by filming a video that touted his legislative goals once he takes office.

Trump did not immediately announce any appointments after the meetings, which came on the heels of a two-day whirlwind of interviews at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Unlike his predecessors, who often spoke with Cabinet candidates under a cloud of secrecy, Trump has turned the search into a very public audition process. The extraordinary exercise took on a routine feel on Monday: First, former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown stepped off the gold-plated elevator into the marble-coated lobby after his meeting to declare to waiting reporters that he was “the best person” to become Veterans Affairs secretary.

Next, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, a candidate for interior secretary, did much the same, striding off the lift to say she had “a wonderful discussion” with Trump. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry declined to speak to reporters, but

Senior adviser Kellyanne Conway said of the visitors, “Not all of them will be in his Cabinet and his federal government, but they are all incredibly important in offering their points of views, their experience and certainly their vision of the country.”

No one was saying whether Trump would announce more appointments before heading to Florida for Thanksgiving. He was planning to leave Tuesday or Wednesday to spend the holiday at his Mar-a-Lago estate, while Vice President-elect Mike Pence will spend Thanksgiving in Mississippi, where his Marine son is stationed.

MALTA – After four years of service in the Marine Corps and nearly 20 years of experience in the restaurant business, Kristen Catencamp returned to the Midwest and opened Remington’s Gastropub, 102 S. Third St. in Malta.

Originally from Wisconsin, Catencamp said after her service she stayed in the Washington, D.C., area where she operated her previous restaurant near the Quantico Marine Corps base.

Catencamp’s husband also is a Marine Corps veteran of 21 years.

She said Malta seemed like the perfect “destination place” to open a gastropub.

“It’s in the country, and I didn’t want to be out in the city or somewhere more congested,” Catencamp said.

Catencamp, who co-owns Remington’s with building owner Mike Vidor, said Remington’s separates itself from other bars by offering upscale, artisanal cocktails.

“Instead of just mixing a vodka and tonic, we are actually really mixing a cocktail, going back to those older days of mixing,” she said.

Remington’s sells a variety of wines and craft beers, but this “gastropub” is as much about the food as it is drinks.

“I’ve got a chef at US Foods that helps me with the flavor profiles, so it’s not just your typical hamburger,” Catencamp said. “We have three cheeses, but they were very specific cheeses that would go together well for that flavor profile. So you know, you can

Kelly McDermid, a Northern Illinois University sophomore, said she enjoys working at Remington’s because of the homey and laid-back atmosphere.

“You never come in here and are uncomfortable in my opinion,” McDermid said. “I could not ask for a better job as a college student. We just have a good crowd in here.”

McDermid said two menu items she always recommends are the fish tacos and mac and cheese.

“We take the basics and we make them phenomenal,” McDermid said.

Other popular menu items include the Wisconsin burger and Bluegill fillets, Catencamp said.

Catencamp said she wanted to “expand the palate” at Remington’s to more than just jalapeño poppers and mozzarella sticks.

“All the big cities have gastropubs; they’re all over the place, but this is something new to DeKalb,” Catencamp said. “So that was one of my motivations, that there is a big opportunity because there are so many craft drinkers and so many people that really like innovative food.”

Let the public monitor big bank settlement It’s no secret some banks behaved badly during the past decade.

But the Obama administration wants to keep the public in the dark about how well these financial ne’er-do-wells are changing their ways.

A lawsuit quietly moving up through the courts could reaffirm the precedent that government records about bank compliance are public records.

The case in question deals with HSBC Bank. The U.S. Justice Department had prosecuted HSBC for laundering money for drug cartels and other entities and for violating sanctions laws.

Rather than fight it out in court, in 2012, HSBC agreed to pay a $1.92 billion fine and to reform its practices. The Justice Department assigned a corporate compliance monitor to make sure HSBC followed through. That monitor periodically completes reports on HSBC’s progress.

And that’s where the public has been cut out.

The court has sealed the monitor’s reports from public view.

One American wasn’t satisfied with that. The citizen moved to intervene in the case. He asked the court to unseal the reports, and a lower court agreed to do so. The unsealing is on hold, though, because the case is on appeal.

HSBC’s opposition to opening the reports is understandable, if detestable. It doesn’t want the bad PR. The less the public knows about what it did and how much it must do to reform, the better for its bottom line. Keeping people in the dark is good business.

More disappointing, however, is the Justice Department siding with the bank and also fighting to keep the reports sealed. Given President-elect Donald Trump’s penchants for secrecy – including his tax returns – he’ll probably stick with President Barack Obama’s position. But we hope we’re wrong, given his pledge to stick up for forgotten Americans.

Trump should show Americans the Justice Department is on their side by dropping the Obama administration’s objections to openness.

Judicial transparency is fundamental to a free and open democracy. If the government can strike deals with bad actors and then keep the implementation secret, people won’t know if justice truly is being served. Indeed, word did get out in the spring that HSBC wasn’t doing good enough.

More than two dozen journalism organizations, including the American Society of News Editors, have filed a brief on behalf of transparency. They rightly note that the courts need a good reason to keep the reports secret. In cases such as this, where there is overwhelming public interest involving newsworthy material, release should be the default.

Even if some parts must be redacted, that is far better than total secrecy.

To the Editor: There is no higher fall than that of exaltation to despair. Like a picture-perfect day at the beach that suddenly turns to disaster as a mindless tidal wave crashes ashore and destroys countless lives while those just beyond the surging waters cheer the destruction.

A week ago, it would have been difficult to see just how low this country could sink under the weight of its own fact-free delusions.

The word “unprecedented” has been used a lot during the 2016 presidential campaign and will certainly apply to the next four years of a Trump administration if all indications are correct.

Some people equate the word with change, while others liken it to the dangers of venturing into uncharted territory. Is there no way of knowing what is coming at us

or are there certain truths based in historical patterns that will foretell our collective futures? Yes, there is.

I see the economic stagnation that has gripped the middle class going into hyperdrive under Trump and the Republicans’ tax-policy agenda. The usual tax relief gifts to the wealthy in the form of real estate tax breaks and huge tax breaks for the millionaire and billionaire classes will push even more wealth to the upper 1 percent while doing exactly nothing for the middle class.

If giving the wealthy huge tax breaks actually created middle-class jobs, George W. Bush’s two huge tax breaks would have had this country swimming in jobs by the end of his second term.

Instead, we lost 750,000 jobs a month by the end of 2008, and we still are recovering from the most severe recession in generations.

I see the national debt soaring thanks to the government taking in

less tax revenues, poverty increasing, wages decreasing, unemployment growing steadily, gas prices back at all-time highs, education budgets slashed, social programs cut, and Wall Street cratering under the weight of unfettered gambling practices thanks to deregulation.

Am I some sort of oracle? No, I’ve just seen this movie before. The actors change, but the script is always the same.

How to assess the causes of this Shakespearian tragedy being played out before my eyes? I fix my gaze on the just under half of the 58 percent of eligible voters who put their misguided faith and our futures into the hands of the political con-artist class and the more than 40 percent of people who simply didn’t bother voting.

Asked about the state party’s aversion to social media and other 21st-century innovations, Guzzardi said it wouldn’t matter much now anyway. “We could hire a social media coordinator, but what would they say?”

“It starts with having a message,” Guzzardi insisted, saying he has been talking with several other members about building “a platform that we can go fight on.”

Others in Madigan’s caucus undoubtedly are nervous about January’s vote for House speaker. Everyone who represents a district Rauner won two years ago will be watched closely – and there are a bunch of them, although that number was reduced by five via the election.

There is no doubt something has changed in the House Democratic caucus.

No actual “revolt” is brewing against the House Speaker. It’s just that members are worried about something that haunts

all politicians: self-preservation. A vote for Madigan for speaker next January is, for many, absolutely guaranteed to cause huge problems for them back home unless this almost two-year impasse is resolved.

Even the least active legislators go to enough events to know what’s on their constituents’ minds. And thanks to unprecedented multimillion-dollar advertising buys on Chicago, St. Louis and other broadcast television markets, a large swath of the public has been overexposed to the pettiness and ugliness of legislative politics for the first time. And about half of those ads were focused mainly on one guy: Madigan.

The last time anyone voted “present” on a roll call for House speaker was 30 years ago this coming January, when Rep. Dick Mautino decided to stick his neck out. He was dealt with harshly, and Madigan put down a potential revolt a year later when he defeated one of the attempted coup leaders in a primary and defeated yet another plotter in 1992. It’s been mostly smooth sailing ever since.

And it’s not like public vilification is anything new to Madigan. I remember the 1988 campaign in the Kankakee area when appointed Rep. Phil Novak, D-Bradley, ran against Iroquois County Clerk John Kuntz. Novak was hammered on local

radio and in the mail for his alleged ties to Madigan. But Novak shrugged it off and went on to win. Madigan just wasn’t as well-known back then and Illinois wasn’t in crisis.

But this year is different. The Republicans turned on the biggest anti-Madigan fire hose they could buy to shift as much blame as possible for this horrific two-year stalemate onto the House Speaker. Madigan’s job approval numbers already were very low. Actually, they’ve always been low. But at a time of crisis, people look for a scapegoat, and Madigan was handed to the populace by Rauner on an expensive platinum platter.

Nobody will say they are prepared to do it themselves, but plenty of House Democrats are speculating some of their colleagues could vote “present” when Madigan comes up for re-election in January. That would be the rarest of rare events, and Team Rauner most definitely would do all it could to exploit it to the hilt.

After Madigan lost a net of four seats on Nov. 8, any wavering of support by Madigan’s membership would be proof the man was losing his iron grip.

Clinton’s dishonesty costs her Midwest, election Hillary Clinton lost the election in the Midwest. Donald Trump won 50 Midwestern electoral votes that went to Barack Obama in 2012 – Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio – plus 20 more in Pennsylvania, where the two-thirds of voters beyond metro Philadelphia are Midwestern in culture and concerns. Trump could have lost Florida and still won.

In the popular vote, Clinton came close to equaling Obama’s 2012 percentages in the South and not-yet-fully-counted West, and her 4 percent drop in the Northeast cost her no electoral votes. But in the Midwest and Pennsylvania, the Democratic presidential percentage dropped from 54 percent in 2008 and 51 percent in 2012 to 45 percent in 2016.

Those drops came mostly outside the Midwest’s big cities, though black turnout sagged notably in Cleveland, Detroit and Milwaukee. University towns turned in their typical lopsided majorities – e.g., 68-26 percent in metro Madison, Wisconsin.

But in Midwestern outstates – counties outside metro areas with a million-plus people – the shift away from Clinton looked like the shifts of white Southerners away from Democrats in decades past.

Iowa, the largest state with no metro area of a million-plus people, was typical: 54 percent Democratic in 2008, 52 percent in 2012 and 41 percent in 2016. The drop was similar in Wisconsin outside Milwaukee and Madison (54 to 50 to 41 percent), Michigan outside Detroit and Grand

VIEWS Michael Barone Rapids (55 to 52 to 41 percent), Ohio outside Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati (48 to 47 to 35 percent) and Pennsylvania outside Philadelphia and Pittsburgh (48 to 44 to 36 percent).

Similar outstate drops were not quite enough to carry Minnesota for Trump and were swamped in Illinois by metro Chicago. But they were enough to switch the Midwestern electoral vote from 80-38 Democratic in 2012 to 88-30 Republican this year.

These outstate areas aren’t growing demographically, but they’re not tiny, either. They cast 100 percent of the votes in Iowa, 61 percent in Wisconsin, 47 percent in Michigan and Pennsylvania, and 44 percent in Ohio.

What accounts for the abandonment of Clinton in areas hitherto reachable for Democrats?

The outstate Midwest is loaded with non-college-educated whites – 62 percent in Iowa, for instance. Nationally, that demographic moved from favoring Mitt Romney by a 25 percent margin in 2012 to favoring Trump by a 39 percent margin this year. In the Midwestern outstates, the shift was even more vivid.

Such voters have been bypassed by sluggish Obama-era economic growth,

and many believe that their jobs have been lost by trade agreements and that their wages have been undercut by lowskilled immigrants in other parts of the country. Trump emphasized these issues, and previous Republicans hadn’t. That’s part of it.

There’s also the condescension of Clinton and her campaign, headquartered in trendy Brooklyn, New York. “Religious beliefs,” candidate Clinton said in 2015, “have to be changed.” She told a Manhattan audience that half of Trump’s supporters were “irredeemable” – “deplorables” characterized by “implicit racism.”

Outstate people who voted for Obama – or whose neighbors or friends at church did – probably weren’t attracted by such statements. Decent people don’t like to be called racists and told that their religion needs to be changed (by the government?).

The Clinton campaign’s strategy to win over folks beyond Brooklyn and Manhattan was to send “West Wing” actors into Ohio and hold a concert with Beyonce and Lady Gaga in Philadelphia.

That’s going to do it!

One other factor worked against Clinton in the outstate Midwest: honesty.

People in the outstate Midwest value honesty. They react against public officials who break laws, flout regulations and repeatedly lie and try to cover it up, as Clinton did with her secret email servers.

In the 1970s, the outstate Midwest broke against Republicans because of

Watergate. Democratic victories in two House special elections in outstate Michigan in 1974 signaled voters’ displeasure with Richard Nixon, and the Democrats swept in elections that fall. Dozens of Democratic politicians began long, successful outstate careers in the Watergate years.

Liberal pundits Jonathan Alter and E.J. Dionne characterized the Clinton email lawbreaking and lies as nonscandals. Maybe they weren’t scandals in Chicago and Massachusetts, where they grew up, but they were in the outstate Midwest.

Hints of Clinton’s general election weakness came in Democratic primaries, when she lost outstates badly in Wisconsin and Michigan and ran barely even in Iowa, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Maybe outstaters were voting not for Bernie Sanders’ socialism but against Clinton’s “damn emails.”

Team Clinton is now saying it was beaten by FBI Director James Comey’s intervention. But Comey would not have been heard from if Clinton hadn’t broken the law. That’s a vote-loser in the outstate Midwest – and an election-loser in America.

On election night, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan started making his usual post-election calls to his Democratic members asking for their support for his own re-election as speaker. But at least a couple said they’d like to sit down with him before providing a firm answer either way.

Reps. Will Guzzardi and Kelly Cassidy, both liberal Chicago Democrats, confirmed that they want Madigan to come up with a plan that, as Guzzardi said, involves more than “just saying ‘No’ ” to Gov. Bruce Rauner.

“I’d like to know what his vision of the next two years is,” Cassidy said. “Doing the same thing over and over again is the definition of insanity, so I want to know what the vision is.” Cassidy refused to comment further, saying she preferred to share her thoughts with Madigan himself.

But Guzzardi wasn’t quite as reticent.

The lowdown: Last season, Kaneland was a senior-laden team, so there are a lot of new faces on this season’s squad. Conroy said his team has to defend well based on its lack of height, but has shown over the summer it is willing to guard opponents tightly. Keep an eye out for junior forward Garrett Hukle this year. Conroy moved him up to varsity last year as a sophomore and played him very little until he required surgery for a shoulder injury that was suffered during football season. Conroy labels him as a wild-card player and describes him as a big, strong, athletic kid who loves basketball.

That idea came to a screeching halt for the Cogs as Sandwich’s Jimmy Braddish drained a 3-pointer with 4.3 seconds left for a 57-54 Sandwich victory Monday night.

Genoa-Kingston (0-1) and Sandwich (1-0) refused to let the other team gain a sizable lead at any point in the opening game of the Leland G. Strombom Holiday Tournament. The Indians started the first quarter sloppy on both ends of the floor after turning over the ball and finding themselves in foul trouble early, putting the Cogs at the freethrow line midway through the

Both teams started the second half with more intensity as the scoring increased. As the lead went back and forth, Zach Miller once again gave the Cogs the 37-36 edge as he ran the length of the court to hit the buzzer-beating layup as the quarter expired.

Miller finished with 16 points, and Justin McNeal finished with 14 points and six rebounds for the Cogs. The game went into overtime with the score tied at 50.

Braddish sank his second 3-pointer of the game to seal the Indians’ win. Braddish finished with 13 points. Jordan Isham also finished with 13 for the Indians.

“We came out and it didn’t look pretty, and Genoa-Kingston kind of punched us in the face,” Sandwich coach Brennan Callahan said. “We knew there was going to be adversity, and we came back.

Jimmy Braddish had struggled all game, and he came in and hit that big 3 for us at the end. That just shows you the kind of kid he is.”

Coach Corey Jenkins’ take: “We have a really talented sophomore class. Five of those kids played on the sophomore team as freshman.

But we also have a really good senior class. We definitely have the bodies, and right now we’re just trying to move people around to see what works best. First, we have to take care of the ball and knock down shots.”

The lowdown: The Cogs have massive shoes to fill after losing senior and Genoa-Kingston’s all-time leading scorer in Tommy Lucca from last season, but they have a talented group of reinforcements. The Cogs have a number of seniors with experience and are working to find a place for a skilled sophomore class that will fill up a lot of their bench. Along with losing Lucca, G-K lost other starters who had great ability to score, so knocking down shots and taking care of the ball will be key to fill that offensive void from last year.

Hinckley-Big Rock

Last season’s record: 7-21. Lost in first round of Serena Regional to Serena Top returners: Taylor Ruh, sr.; Corey Maercker, sr.; Matt Menzel, sr.

The lowdown: The Royals lost every starter from last season, so there will be quite a bit of new faces on the team. The new incoming varsity players will have to learn to play at the higher level, but according to Sambrookes, once the team finds its form toward the middle of the season, they can start winning many more games. The Royals also have more height than they’ve had in the past, but still have the quickness to match it.

We are missing several players off of last year’s team, but we are not approaching this year as a rebuilding year.”

The lowdown: Biancalana’s first concern is getting his full team put together now that their football season ended on Saturday. Once a full team is assembled, the Barbs expect to continue their usual winning ways. The Barbs

are 48-13 overall and 22-2 in conference with two straight conference championships under Biancalana. Look for Tucker to have another successful season, and watch out for Bobo, who is a transfer student from Downers Grove South.

Hiawatha

The lowdown: The Hawks welcome back a crew of seniors that will be key to leading this otherwise young team. The main focus for them is do take it one day at a time and enjoy the process of getting better. One player to look out for is senior foreign-exchange student Rubelt, who never has played basketball until this year, but stands close to 7 feet tall. If the coaching staff can develop his skills enough, Rubelt could be a dangerous weapon for the Hawks.

As he approaches his first season back in a head coaching role, Picolotti has a simple mindset he wants to follow.

“As a head coach, obviously, there’s a lot of goals to accomplish and I have to be patient,” Picolotti said. “We have some guys in some different roles, so it’s going to take a little time to really come together, and we just have to take it one day at a time. When I finished as a head coach with the girls, I wasn’t quite enjoying the game like I know I do. I just want to get back to having fun again and working with the guys.”

SYCAMORE – Jack Mizgalski and James Marcinkowski looked like they were in midseason form in the season opener.

The Sycamore boys basketball team got a lift from the two seniors in a 47-34 victory over Dundee-Crown on the first day of the Leland G. Strombom Holiday Tournament on Monday night.

Mizgalski scored all of his team-high 14 points in the first half – including four 3-pointers – and Marcinkowski flirted with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the win.

“Jack shot well early, and [DundeeCrown] did a nice job in the second half. We had a much more difficult time getting shots off, but other guys stepped up,” Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti said. “I thought James Marcinkowski was all over the place. He got every rebound. He did a great job giving us a lot more scoring opportunities.”

For the Chargers, guard Jack Orndahl made his first three 3-pointers in the opening quarter and finished with a team-high 14 points. Nobody else on Dundee-Crown scored more than four points.

Sycamore also got 11 points from junior Mary Beth Nolan for Shaw Media Ethan Heinrich.

“My sophomore and my junior year, I had a slow start to the season, so I wanted to make sure my senior season wasn’t like that,” Mizgalski said. “I don’t know, I was just feeling good today.”

Dundee-Crown cut the Sycamore lead to 16-13 on a jumper by Bradley Stec early in the second quarter, but the Spartans pushed the advantage up on back-to-back 3-pointers – one by Mizgalski and the other by sophomore Darnell Coleman – and a layup by senior post Connor Weckerly.

The Chargers never got it within less than nine points the rest of the way.

For the Spartans, the game was played without the benefit of having their entire roster. A handful of players that were on the Sycamore football team sat out the season opener. The Spartans advanced to the semifinals of the Class 5A football playoffs, losing 21-16 to Vernon Hills on Saturday.

Picolotti said for some of the players, including quarterback and forward Ty Sulaver, it will be a matter of when their bodies are rested.

In Mizgalski’s opinion, the rest for the football players is well-deserved.

“We’re going to have practice [Tuesday], so we’ll go through a lot of the plays with them,” Mizgalski said. “They need a break from all the hits that they’ve taken.”

The Spartans will play Sandwich at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in their next game of the Strombom Tournament.

With retirement still a ways off, he has a chance to win eight titles, and as he drank a beer and ate a slice of cold pizza in a champagne-soaked firesuit, he already was being asked about the possibility of eight.

“I don’t know what the chances are, but let’s go,” he said. “I’m so excited to put that in front of myself, and the team has a hurdle to get over and an accomplishment to achieve. I had a lot of fun racing for the sixth. This one and the calm nature and the way we went about business and got it done only gives me more confidence for the future.

“I honestly feel like I’m playing with house money. I never aspired to be famous. I never aspired to be a champion.

The organization buckled down, improved its cars and got Johnson in position to race for his seventh title.

Then he did the rest.

When Carl Edwards wrecked Sunday night to essentially lose the championship, Johnson charged through the melee and found himself suddenly leading the two remaining title contenders. On a night when he had started last – his team was found to have manipulated the body of his car after it had passed inspection – and clearly wasn’t as good as the other three contenders, he somehow had lucked into the lead.

He still had to earn the win, however, and did it with the restart of his life to hold off Kyle Busch and Joey Logano.

He led one lap and it was the one that mattered.

“He is probably the most underrated champion in this sport,” said his crew chief, Chad Knaus. “He is a fantastic, fantastic individual, an amazing race car driver. Most people in the situation we were just in would crumble. He didn’t even waver. He knew what he needed to

do. He knew what the demands were on him at that point in time, and he made it happen.

“We’ve got a great team. We’ve got a great owner. We’ve got a great everything at Hendrick Motorsports. But the fact of the matter is the real spark in this whole thing is Jimmie.”

A fatigue perhaps set in when Johnson reeled off five consecutive titles. Fans didn’t seem to appreciate his dominance, certainly not the way they revered Petty or Earnhardt.

Almost each Johnson championship was met with a collective yawn, when they should have been celebrated for their unique achievement.

Johnson, at 41, is the youngest driver to win seven. Petty was 42 when he did it in 1979, while Earnhardt was 43 in 1994.

He also collected his seven titles in a 10year span. Earnhardt needed 14 years to do it, while Petty did it in 15 seasons.

Johnson’s 80 career victories rank seventh all time, one spot ahead of Earnhardt.

“I think the five in a row was pretty phenomenal, and I think winning seven and tying seven is pretty special,” team owner Rick Hendrick said. “It’s special to see him tie those guys. I think it’s good for the sport, and I think it draws a lot of at-

26 Eye drops offer relief for allergy sufferers Note to readers: This column originally ran in November 2014.

Dear Dr. K: I have allergies, and my eyes

are affected the most. They’re puffy, red and itchy. What can I do?

Dear Reader: Pollens, animal dander, dust mites and mold: The same allergens that cause sneezing and an itchy nose and throat can trigger allergy symptoms that affect your eyes, too. If your eyes are red and itchy, you also might have tearing, mucous discharge and swelling of your conjunctiva (the inside of your eyelid).

This constellation of symptoms is known as allergic conjunctivitis. It can be uncomfortable, but it is not a threat to vision.

To help improve your symptoms, try to avoid whatever triggers your allergies. If you are allergic to cats, avoid them, or at least don’t touch your eyes when near one.

If pollen is your nemesis, keep your windows closed. And keep an air purifier or air conditioner going in pollen season.

A simple but effective remedy is to place a cool, wet washcloth over your eyes.

Also, use artificial tears (available without prescription) frequently. They’ll give you some relief and help wash away allergens.

Try not to rub your eyes. Doing so causes mast cells, which play a key role in allergic reactions, to release inflammation-causing chemicals into the eye. This makes symptoms worse.

If your symptoms appear occasionally, try one of the newer generation of antihistamines you can take by mouth. Antihistamines block the action of histamine, a major cause of itchy eyes. Over-the-counter options include loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec) and fexofenadine (Allegra).

Others are available by prescription.

Another option is eye drops that contain mast cell stabilizers, which limit release of the inflammation-causing chemicals.

Eye drops that contain antihistamines and decongestants (medicines that cause small blood vessels to narrow) are available over the counter. They can provide quick relief, particularly of the redness in the eye. But don’t use these medications for more than a week or two, as they can cause excessive narrowing of the blood vessels in your eye. And be prepared for a little redness to return after you’ve stopped using them.

If your symptoms persist, try eye drops that combine a mast cell stabilizer and an antihistamine. These drugs are available over the counter and by prescription.

If you use multiple types of eye drops, such as drops containing an antihistamine and artificial tears, don’t put both drops in your eye at the same time. Wait about five minutes between putting the two types of drops in your eye. Otherwise, the second type you put in your eye may wash away the effects of the first type.

If your symptoms are severe and don’t improve with other medications, ask your doctor about prescription eye drops that contain corticosteroids. These medications help control inflammation, but they only should be used under the guidance of an eye specialist (ophthalmologist). Without proper monitoring, corticosteroid eye drops can cause glaucoma, cataracts or other serious complications.

While, as you replied to “Sleepy in California” (Sept. 17), some parents do “cosleep” with their children for the first few months, what you were referring to actually is “bed sharing.” Bed sharing was shown in studies several years ago to be the greatest risk factor for sleep-related deaths in infants younger than 4 months of age.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the March of Dimes both have recommended (for years) against bed sharing in these young infants. Instead, they recommend young infants sleep in cribs near their parents. They of course should be on their backs and should not be sleeping with blankets or toys.

These deaths, mostly from suffocation or overheating, are sad and mostly preventable.

The acceptance of bed sharing due to cultural influences is difficult to overcome. Please help by taking the time to educate your readers on the dangers of bed sharing with infants. – C.

We have chances in bridge: for example, the chance that the contract will make. With finesses, what are the chances that one, or one out of two, or one out of three will work?

In today’s deal South has finesses available in all three side suits. However, because he is in a small slam, he cannot afford to take two that lose.

How should he play in six hearts after West leads a trump, and East follows suit?

The bidding followed a modern path. Two no-trump was the Jacoby Forcing Raise, guaranteeing game-going values with at least fourcard heart support. Four no-trump was Roman Key Card Blackwood.

North’s reply showed the trump queen and two key cards (two aces, or one ace and the trump king). Five no-trump announced that all six key cards (four aces, the trump king and trump queen) were held and that South was thinking about a grand slam. Six hearts denied a side-suit king.

Declarer drew trumps ending on the board, then played a diamond to his queen. Sadly, it lost, and a diamond came back. Now South needed to maximize his chances in the black suits. He won with his diamond ace, cashed the club king, played a club to the ace, discarded his last club on the diamond jack and ruffed a club.

Here, the queen appeared to establish dummy’s jack, so the contract was home. But if the queen had not been seen, declarer would have crossed to dummy with a trump and tried the spade finesse.

The percentages on those finesses are basically 50, 75 and 87.5.
