Evergreen Village Mobile Home Park resident Larry Hunter stands by his trailer Thursday at lot A21 of the park. Hunter had scraped lines in the corner siding of the trailer to remember the height of the water during the two major floods he’s been through in 2007 and 2008, the 2007 flood happening within days of him moving in. Ellen Divita will start in her new position as community development director Nov. 20 in DeKalb, DeKalb officials announced FriEllen Divita day. In her new role, Divita will oversee a rebuilt community development department with four full-time and four part-time staff members, including two part-time property maintenance inspectors she will hire. Divita also will be part of developing and implementing the city’s new commercial building inspection ordinance. “Economic development

She previously worked as the deputy director of community development for the village of Mount Prospect and as director of economic development for St. Charles and Woodstock. Divita has a master’s degree in urban planning and a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It’s something they never would have considered before spending 12 years at Evergreen Village Mobile Home Park, 955 E. State St. near Sycamore. They’re eager to get out of the park before any more flooding; Watkins said if it rains 3 inches, she has water in her home. “Before, I always listened to the rain,” Watkins said. “I don’t even like the sound of it any more.” After months of searching, Watkins and her husband have found that in the past few weeks many properties that would be in their price range have quickly been scooped up by other buyers. She’s concerned about finding a home that will fit their needs as DeKalb County leaders proceed with a buyout plan that will return the floodprone mobile home park to open space. CHICAGO – A contract employee set a fire at a suburban Chicago air traffic control center where he worked, bringing two of the nation’s busiest airports to a halt Friday, according to a criminal complaint. The complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago charges Brian Howard, 36, of Naperville with one count of destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities, a felony. The FBI said Howard remains hospitalized because of his injuries and that no court date for him has been scheduled. Delays and cancellations rippled through the air travel network from coast to coast after the fire. The ground stoppage at O’Hare and Midway airports immediately raised questions about whether the Federal Aviation Administration has adequate backup plans to keep planes moving when a single facility has to shut down.

By late afternoon, about 1,950 flights in and out of Chicago had been canceled. A few flights resumed around midday, after a nearly five-hour gap. The planes were moving at a much-reduced pace, officials said, and no one could be sure when full service would be restored. The early morning fire forced the evacuation of the control center in Aurora, about 40 miles west of downtown Chicago. It was the second unexpected shutdown of a Chicago-area air traffic facility since May. Howard worked for the FAA contractor that supplies and maintains communications systems at air traffic facilities, said Jessica Cigich, a spokeswoman for Professional Aviation Safety Specialists, the union that represents FAA technicians. He recently was told he was being transferred to Hawaii, the complaint said.
