Give Local raises almost $190K DeKalb County nonprofits benefit from online fundraiser By BRITTANY KEEPERMAN bkeeperman@shawmedia.com Community generosity was on display as donors gave almost $190,000 to 55 DeKalb County nonprofit organizations Tuesday through the daylong Give Local DeKalb County campaign.
Although the total fell a bit short of the $200,000 goal, Anita Zurbrugg, program director at the DeKalb County Community Foundation, said she was impressed with the response, especially in light of various competing causes that had surfaced. “Locally, we were all con-
cerned and generous with Fairdale,” Zurbrugg said. “Globally, we are concerned about the earthquake [in Nepal]. ... Our community still came through, and this shows how wonderfully the nonprofit community can pull together to make things happen.” This was the second year
DeKalb County has participated in the Give Local campaign. Zurbrugg said the community support was overwhelming last year, and involvement was even greater this year. Almost double the number of nonprofit organizations participated. Give Local received 1,265 gifts by 699 unique do-
nors. Each gift averaged about $132, Zurbrugg said. The DeKalb County Community Foundation contributed $23,000 in matching funds, which was included in the $189,899.42 total. Those matching

BAD WEATHER Storm chasers were out during, but west of, Fairdale tornado By ADAM POULISSE apoulisse@shawmedia.com DeKALB – When the weather worsened April 9, and people followed the weather reports to know when to take shelter in their basements or bathrooms, Corey Hoffman and Alex Wilkinson were driving as close to the storm as possible. Together, these lifelong buddies are the Windy City Storm Chasers, based in DeKalb. “Neither of us have any kind of meteorological degree,” Wilkinson said. “I do most of my stuff with free meteorological stuff online, and you learn the same information without having to pay. I’m not claiming to know as much as a meteorologist, but I can at least learn what I need to know.”
While individuals and state and regional organizations chase tornadoes, the Windy City Storm Chasers are the only official group based in DeKalb County. Hoffman and Wilkinson go out into storms to relay severe weather information to the community, while not endangering themselves. “I don’t like roller coasters or anything like that, so it’s a way for me to get an adrenaline rush,” Wilkinson said. “I feel like I’ve taught myself enough about severe weather to where I can trust my own head to get in and get out.” Windy City Storm Chasers consists of Hoffman behind the wheel every time there’s bad weather, Wilkinson observing

Storms are very [unforgiving]. Because a tornado is moving so fast, if you got in the path of it and your car suddenly had problems or skidded off the roadway, your chances of survival are slim. You have to make sure you have at least a basic understanding of storms.” – Gilbert Sebenste, Northern Illinois University Meteorologist
CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner told Chicago aldermen Wednesday that Illinois can’t “bail out” the nation’s third-largest city, and urged cooperation addressing the looming financial challenges during an unprecedented speech by a sitting governor to the City Council. In a roughly 10-minute speech, the new Republican governor gave dueling takes on the relationship between the state and Chicago, both of which are facing severe budget Gov. Bruce problems. Rauner He said Chicago should have local control on such issues as a potential casino but also told the Democratic body the top suggestion he hears from downstate Illinois residents on improving the state is to secede from Chicago. “I am eager to go to bat for the 2.7 million people of Chicago, but you must remember there are over 10 million people who live outside the city limits,” Rauner said. “Illinois as a state is in a terrible financial crisis. We don’t have the money to simply bail out the city of Chicago. It’s not an option.” Rauner has been traveling statewide to promote an agenda that includes funding cuts and restricting union influence. Many municipalities have embraced it, passing resolutions in support. But that hasn’t been the case in labor-friendly Chicago. Moments before Rauner spoke, aldermen and Mayor Rahm Emanuel used a resolution to oppose Rauner’s push to create “right to work zones” where union membership is voluntary. Workers in the audience applauded heartily. “It is the wrong strategy,” Emanuel told the crowd.
