rying the opiate antidote Narcan in November 2014. Since October 2014, DeKalb County sheriff’s deputies and officers from almost every police department in the county, along with KishHealth System workers, have been trained in recognizing the signs of drug overdose and how to administer Narcan. NIU police Cmdr. Don Rodman added that NIU police worked with DeKalb police and DeKalb fire departments to save the victim’s life. “You can’t put a price on a life,” Rodman said. “And the training and equipment obviously were well worth the investment.”
ry during Monday’s discussion. “Where do these bullet points stand?” Gregory said there still was room for negotiation and asked the council for specific direction on where they’d like to see talks go. Third Ward Alderman Steve Braser was even more blunt. “I don’t think there’s a person on this board, or the County Board, who’s against a so ber living house,” he said. “What we’ve been against from the start has been the location.” Fourth Ward Alderman Janice Tripp and Mayor Ken Mundy also objected to the location. Braser later encouraged Gregory to not spend “much more”

Narcan in DeKalb County In fall 2014, officers with DeKalb, Sycamore and Northern Illinois University police departments became the first in the county trained for administering Narcan, otherwise known as naloxone, that is used to counteract the effects of heroin and other opiates. The local program was modeled after those in nearby counties, such as DuPage, that already had one in place, DeKalb Police Chief Eugene Lowery said “The goal of the program is to save lives and to prevent another family from suffering the loss of a loved one,” he said. “We have seen how lives have been saved for years by administering Narcan to potential

DeKALB – Northern Illinois University police officer Jon Krengel felt relieved after he was able to revive a drug overdose victim during one of his recent shifts. “The first thing I remember is just that feeling of relief that she was going to be OK,” he said. Krengel was on a routine patrol in the early morning hours of April 22 when he was called to the 900 block of Ridge Drive in DeKalb for a report of a woman who was unconscious. “You get kind of in the zone and you just start doing things,” said Krengel, recalling seeing the unconscious victim when he walked inside an apartment. “You do what you are trained to do.” Krengel said at first he didn’t know about the nature of the call, but from his 13-year experience as a certified paramedic, he knew such calls are often prompted by drug overdoses. To revive the victim, Krengel said he had to use two doses of Narcan. Watching the victim regain her consciousness after applying a second dose of the antidote gave Krengel the rush of happiness. “You don’t really have time to be emotional until it’s over with,” he said. Police officials say Krengel’s quick action saved the life of a person suffering from an opiate overdose, the first such save for DeKalb County law enforcement since several officers began car-
Further discussions of a county sober living home in Sycamore will take place at a undecided later date, so an intergovernmental agreement can be worked on.
SYCAMORE – The results of continued talks between city and county officials regarding plans for a proposed sober living facility in Sycamore left no one on the City Council in a celebratory mood Monday night. Sycamore City Manager Brian Gregory presented the council with six provisions that had been discussed for turning the residence at 491 E. State St. into an allmale sober living home. Gregory asked the council for discussion and direction. First Ward Alderman Alan Bauer wasn’t impressed. He called the provisions “not overly substantial” and said they didn’t make it easier for those in the neighborhood to accept the sober living house. “Is this like the county’s first volley? Or is this where the staff and the county have kind of negotiated themselves toward the middle?” Bauer asked Grego-

WASHINGTON – Since 2006, the FBI had been investigating Elton Simpson – one of the men suspected in the Texas shootings outside a contest featuring cartoons of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad. Agents recorded the young man from Phoenix talking about fighting nonbelievers for Allah. About plans to travel to South Africa and link up with “brothers” in Somalia. About using school as a cover story for traveling overseas. Simpson was arrested in 2010, one day before authorities say he planned to leave for South Africa.

But despite more than 1,500 hours of recorded conversations, the government prosecuted him on only one minor charge – lying to a federal agent. Years spent investigating Simpson for terrorism ties resulted in three years of probation and $600 in fines and court fees. Then, on Sunday, two men whom authorities identified as Simpson and Nadir Soofi opened fire in a Dallas suburb on an unarmed security officer stationed outside the contest. The officials spoke only on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation by name.
