SYCAMORE – Anyone who files a lawsuit in DeKalb County Court beginning July 1 can expect an added $8 fee that will be used to fund a new program for child custody exchanges. DeKalb County Board members voted Wednesday to approve the new fee for civil cases, which will also apply to defendants when they file a response. The fees will fully fund Anthony the Neutral Cvek E x c h a n g e R-Sycamore Program. Beginning Jan. 2, separated or divorced parents will be able to drop off their child at Family Service Agency, 14 Health Services Drive, DeKalb, to have the other parent pick the child up 5 to 10 minutes later to avoid
potential conflicts or arguments, said Anthony Cvek, a Sycamore Republican. “A lot of times these visitation exchanges occur in cases where parents have the opportunity to interact in front of the kid,” Cvek said. “Some of those circumstances are so emotionally charged, it could create a conflict.” Similar programs are already in place in other counties, including DuPage and Winnebago counties. The DeKalb County program will be offered for free to parents, said Holly Peifer, Family Service Agency director of children’s advocacy center. Family Service Agency will hire security personnel and get more equipment before they offer the program Jan. 2, Peifer said. “It’s going to be a great program,” she said. “We knew it was a much needed service in DeKalb County.”

aroline Quinlan relishes a long Easter Vigil on Saturday night filled with readings, traditional prayers and communion. “You’re drawn into the whole meditative experience,” Quinlan, a DeKalb resident, said. “It creates a really joyful, glorious experience Sunday.” Across DeKalb County, the faithful will commemorate Easter with ceremonies and services that will bring to a close a Lenten season of reflection and start a season celebrating new life. In contrast to the solemn services of Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday are joyful celebrations filled with flowers, bells, lights and water, said the Rev. Donald Ahles from Saint Catherine of Genoa Church. The Holy Saturday ceremony begins in the dark and ends with light, which gives way to a celebratory Easter service where Ahles will speak about secular Easter symbols such as the egg. “We wouldn’t have those symbols if it wasn’t for new life,” Ahles said. Fire will start the Easter celebration at Mayfield Congregational Church UCC in Sycamore. At 7:30 a.m., the Rev. Martha Brunell

Fire provides warmth and brings people together.” During the service after the fire, Brunell will preach about how people fit into or are an

DeKALB – The finance director who resigned her DeKalb post last month received more than $9,000 for accrued time off as part of a separation agreement between her and the city. Laura Pisarcik resigned March 7 after more than three years as finance director. That same week, City Mana g e r A n n e Anne Marie Marie Gaura Gaura a n n o u n c e d DeKalb City f i n a n c i a l manager consultants would review the city’s financial policies and procedures, a move aldermen approved Monday. “Pisarcik shall be compensated for accrued paid time off in accordance with
city policy as an employee resigning in good standing,” the separation agreement states. “Pisarcik shall not be entitled to any further or additional compensation of any kind, whatsoever, from the city.” Assistant City Manager Rudy Espiritu has served as the interim finance director since March 10. Officials don’t expect to start a search for a new finance director until the next fiscal year, which begins July 1. Council members Monday approved spending up to $45,000 on temporary help from GovTemps USA until June 30. Under the agreement, Dave Richardson and Stan Helgerson, two retirees with municipal finance experience, will review the city’s financial and purchasing policies, and budget process.
