A golfer takes a swing on the Cantigny course. The facility celebrated its 25th anniversary June 5. at a public course. The loyalty’s there, but they are booking times and coming out each week. So we always try to make sure we have availability throughout the day every day where the general public can come whenever.” That openness extends to the course’s community outreach through its Youth Links, Golf Academy and caddy programs and its work with area nonprofits such as the Marionjoy Rehabilitation Hospital. “That’s been guidance from our board going back all the

way to 1989 – yes, there’s a need to have golf outings to fill in certain times of the day and for businesses, but they wanted us to consider and take in not-for-profits first before we filled any open dates with corporate outings,” Nass said. He added because of how the business has changed over the past decade, being as open to others as possible has become a necessity. “People have gotten busier with their families, kids have many more things they can choose from – we’re no

longer just competing, so to speak, with other golf courses, we’re competing with peoples’ time,” Nass said. But Nass is confident the course will continue to be part of the lives of golfers in the DuPage County area for years. “It’s pretty quiet out here, there’s no highways going by the property, no houses on the property,” he said. “Once you’re out playing, you’re pretty out in a quiet serene environment. Hopefully that helps relieve some of the tensions of the week or day.”

By NATHAN LURZ WHEATON – It didn’t take long after Cantigny Golf’s June 5, 1989, opening for it to be recognized as a top course – it was named as the “Best New Public Course in America” in the January 1990 issue of “Golf Digest.” Two-and-a-half decades later, the course still takes its original charge of publicly accessible golf seriously, Executive Director Mike Nass said. It was McCormick Foundation board member and former Chicago Tribune editor Clayton Kirkpatrick who felt public access golf was important to the area and the foundation. “He kind of pushed for this, not only as a service for the community but also as a way for the trust to generate a little income to offset expenses of the (Cantigny) park and (the First Division) museum that are pretty much free to public,” Nass said. Throughout its history, the course has avoided forcing patrons to pay membership fees to play on its three nine-hole courses spanning 275 acres – something which has kept it accessible for the 30,000 to 40,000 golfers of all abilities and income levels who visit each year. “We do still have a great group of committed, loyal golfers,” said Head Golf Pro Patrick Lynch. “We are kind of the private club experience

What’s the reason the old Amling’s retail property (Ogden Avenue and Monroe Street) in Hinsdale has been allowed to fall into such a horrible state of abandonment? Every day, it becomes more of an eyesore with its decrepit buildings, lowering property values for everyone in the area. Why is this issue being overlooked or swept under the rug? Make a decision –residential or commercial – and get this property up and running. If nothing else, tear down the existing buildings, sod the land and allow this space to become a green space. After that, come to a zoning decision and stick with it. Just letting things go to rot makes absolutely no economic sense for anyone.

Correcting information in a Sound Off item [In last week’s Sound Off], it was not supposed to be $950,000 or more, it was supposed to be $150,000 or more in the [item] on “Call for DuPage Board transparency.” … So thanks for having Sound Off because most people would not write articles in there. I really disagree with [the item] stating Sound Off should include an attribution.
