CCSD phasing in school AP New security upgrades Year’s poll: Americans hopeful for a better 2017 NEW YORK (AP) — Emotionally wrenching politics, foreign conflicts and shootings at home took a toll on Americans in 2016, but they are entering 2017 on an optimistic note, according to a new poll that found that a majority believes things are going to get better for the country next year. A look at the key findings of the Associated PressTimes Square Alliance poll:

So how was 2016?

Creston Community School District began phasing in its new school security upgrades just before winter break. The board approved a $600,000 plan to improve security at the school’s buildings in 2015. That plan included a new phone system, exterior door entry system and more surveillance cameras in buildings. At the Dec. 19 board meeting, CCSD Superintendent Steve McDermott updated board members on the security upgrades. “Our cameras are in, and they’re operating,” McDermott said. “We’re working a few bugs out of them.” CCSD worked with Communication Innovators, headquartered in Pleasant Hill, to replace existing sur-

veillance cameras at school facilities, some of which had been in place for more than 12 years. High School Principal Bill Messerole said phase one of the camera system at the high school has been completed. Cameras in the parking lots and on the entry and exit doors have been placed. “Now, we have good coverage in the parking lot,” Messerole said. “Before, it was an antiquated system. Obviously, it’s a much clearer p i c t u r e . Messerole We still h a v e some tweaks to make on some of our camera angles. If something happens in our parking lot, we’re able

to pull it up and see it for the most part.” The new camera system is a major improvement over the previous set of surveillance cameras. In addition to improved clarity, the cameras provide administrators with 24/7 access to the camera feeds. “They’re terrific. Clarity is good,” McDermott said. “I can pull cameras up across the district on my phone right now, which is really nice security-wise.” Cameras at the high school were being used for about a week prior to winter break. “Right now, we’re just trying to get used to them,” Messerole said. “There’s a few things we’ve had to look up if this happened or that happened. It’s just nice to have an updated system where you can make out faces and that type of thing.”

The sun gleans off the ice and water of a partially frozen McKinley Lake in Creston Monday afternoon, as the open water ripples from winds that gusted up to 32 mph. Creston had a high temperature of 34 degrees Monday, but with the strong winds, the wind chill was 21 degrees.

The biggest change with the new camera system is that schools will now be keeping track of who enters and exits school buildings. The cameras will work in conjunction with the new buzz-in door entry systems, which are currently being installed district-wide and could be completed in January. “Once the door system is ready to go and we’re ready to kick that off, we’ll work SCHOOLS | 2A

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S.-Russian talks on their separate fights against the Islamic State group are improving and becoming more frequent, American officials said, with each side trading information in real time and even outlining some of their strategic objectives in the months ahead. Americans weren’t thrilled with the year. Only 18 percent said things for the country got better, 33 percent said things got worse, and 47 percent said it was unchanged from 2015. On a personal level, they

were optimistic about 2017. Fifty-five percent said they believe things will be better for them in the coming year than in the year that just concluded. That’s a 12-point improvement from last year’s poll. Americans interviewed about the poll’s results expressed some of that optimism. “Next year will be better than this year, because people will have more jobs and they’ll have more money to spend,” said Bourema Tamboura, a Harlem resident behind the wheel of a New York car service. “I’m hoping 2017 will be better,” added Elizabeth Flynn, 62, an elementary
