For the past 44 years, David Kragel has been an ambassador for the community college model in public education. After starring for coach Percy Stielow as an all-state basketball player at Corning High School, Kragel enrolled at Southwestern Community College in the fall of 1972 to begin a stellar two-sport career for coach Ron “Fox” Clinton. After playing basketball and baseball for the Spartans, earning All-American status as the nation’s leading junior college scorer in the 1973-74 basketball season, Kragel went on to play two years at Oklahoma State University, where he was named most valuable player of the basketball team. Kragel got into coaching as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State, given the reins to direct the Cowboys freshman team. That paved the way for one of the most successful coaching careers in American collegiate basketball. Kragel, 62, will coach his 40th women’s basketball team this winter at Walters State Community College in eastern Tennessee. The Lady Senators have appeared in 13 national tournaments — including the last five in a row — with finishes of fourth in the nation last year, fifth in 2009 and
