Last week was the hottest week in Iowa for 2013. Heat indexes soared into the triple digits and area schools without air conditioning were forced to send students home early. Crops were suckerpunched by the heat blast, drying out corn and leaving soybeans begging for some moisture. Drought memories from 2012 remain fresh in Iowans’ minds as they look to the sky wondering: Where is the rain? “We came into this growing season with an abundant amount of moisture, too much

Caution: Dry conditions can increase chances for starting fires By JAKE WADDINGHAM CNA staff reporter

The Creston Fire Department urges people to be more diligent in watching for fires while Union County and surrounding areas remain in severe to moderate drought conditions. “With the dry conditions, it is important to watch fires

to make sure they don’t get out of control,” said Assistant Fire Chief Mick Landers. “Even Landers small embers can start a fire in dry conditions.” Landers said anyone burning waste debris or light

brush should be particularly cautious and supervise the burn. Another area of fire concern for Landers is farmers returning to the fields for harvest. “We encourage farmers to keep equipment clean, especially around the bearings where it can get warm,” Landers said. ORIENT — Last year the Wallace Centers of Iowa, one of which located five miles east of Orient, was caught unprepared for drought conditions and spent the growing season fighting an uphill battle to catch up. Diane Weiland, CEO and

program director for the Wallace Centers of Iowa, said they have been more proactive this year preparing for a drought. “We have had to do lots of watering, but we planned for a drought and put drip tapes in the rows of vegetables,” Weiland said. “It allows us to get water to Please see WALLACE, Page 2

in some cases,” state climatologist Harry Hillaker said. Since then, it’s been dry. The most recent U.S. drought monitor map, released Thursday, shows parts of Union County in severe drought along with a majority of central Iowa. The southern part of Union County is ranked in moderate drought condition. “Creston would be on the southern edge of the really dry area,” Hillaker said. “Probably a little drier than most of the state.”

Drought comparison Even though the past two summers were burdened with droughts, Hillaker said there are a lot of differences between the two dry spells. “Last year, we were in a hole before things even got started Please see SPELL, Page 2
