Crediting past teachers, Prof. Rall enters CCHS Hall of Fame By ALEX FELKER

and his advanced algebra and senior mathematics teacher, Mr. Dave Koos, with instilling in him and then nurturing his love of mathematics. “Both men were also my coaches,” Rall said. “I have sort of the unusual story,” said Rall. “Most people — when they joke about who was their high school mathematics teacher — always the standard joke is ‘Well, I didn’t learn any mathematics because I had coaches for teachers.’ “And I had coaches! The basketball and the football coach were the two individuals that taught me in high school. And they were just really good. So I don’t like that joke.” Rall was born in 1949 in West Union, as the second oldest of four sons to Harold and Margaret Rall. After two years, the family moved to a wheat farm in western Kansas and then, in 1959, relocated to the Creston area — eventually to a small farm on Townline Road. Rall attended Lincoln No. 9 (a country school) for his sixth grade year before the family moved again to Deloit for a short time, before returning to Creston during the middle of Rall’s seventh-grade year. Rall was active in both 4-H and his church, Trinity Lutheran. He attended junior high and then high school at CHS, then at the old building, where he involved himself in plenty of extracurriculars, including the school chorus, basketball and track. Rall now lives in Simpsonville, South Carolina, where he researches and teaches for Furman University. He received a B.A.

For Douglas F. Rall, 1967 Creston High School graduate, the opportunity to return to Creston for a class reunion and hall of fame induction ceremony was an unexpected one. He writes in his acceptance letter: “Your letter of July 14 was a complete surprise for me. ... I am not totally sure what I have done to deserve this honor, but in any case I thank the committee.”

Rall may not be sure, but others are sure of the impact he had during his time spent in Creston. Rall was heavily involved in both academic and athletic extracurriculars. After serving as junior class president, he served on the student council senior year and then as president of the science club. For his academic marks, he was initiated into the National Honor Society within the top 5 percent of his junior-year class. He graduated in a 173-student class with scholastic honors. He was the co-captain of a basketball team that went on to play Roosevelt High School in Des Moines in a sub-state battle, and a

“I think it’s true of a lot of people that they’ll look back on their high school years, and say ‘I don’t know,’” said Rall. “But for me, I’m a mathematician now, and I really got a firm foundation in mathematics when I was in high school in Creston. “I didn’t even like mathematics, but I had really good teachers in high school and I think that’s the thing that sealed it for me,” Rall said. “It’s just that fact that they encouraged me, and gave me such a good foundation. It made me who I am today.” Rall credits his geometry teacher, Mr. Bill Baldwin,

A road-work project that spanned approximately 1 1/2 miles has come to a close, for the time being, on 190th Street east of Afton. The project’s completion, as well as potential further renovations, were discussed during Monday’s regular Union County Board of Supervisors meeting. Also called School Road, this segment of rock road in question underwent heavy maintenance and reshaping over the summer in preparation for school-year traffic. The road is traveled by roughly 170 vehicles per day, on average, according to Iowa DOT Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT) figures. It is heavily used

during harvest season, and for travel to and from East Union Community School in Afton. “It’s not just this county’s cars (that travel it) either,” said Supervisor Dale Cline. “It’s every school district around — they know it’s a shortcut. For every school event.” A new type of recycled, crushed concrete was used to supplement rock in the reshaping of the road. According to Union County Engineer Zach Gunsolley, the road now measures approximately 28 feet in width. The road segment has also been rolled for compaction. The recycled concrete used was crushed at CSI in Creston and purchased at a COUNTY | 7A
