As a lifelong New York Yankees fan, Randy Hughes has seen his share of star-studded lineups. Likewise, he never left the community that hired him as a 21-year-old teacher in 1970 because he felt like he was part of an all-star cast at Creston High School. For his 36 years of service to the school in several capacities (see related story), Hughes is being inducted into the Creston High School Hall of Fame Friday afternoon as Distinguished Faculty. The induction and homecoming queen coronation takes place at noon Friday in the school auditorium, prior to the homecoming parade. Hughes retired from Creston High School in 2006, when he joined the faculty of Southwestern Community College for another 11 years before fully retiring last May. of those teachers and many others were part of that longstanding faculty crew that worked together at CHS. Some of them are already on the Hall of Fame tribute wall in the fine arts hallway at Creston Community High School. Hughes said he is honored to realize he’s about to join them. “I’m surprised, because all I ever thought I was doing was my job. Longevity can get confused with excellence, I suppose,” he said with his usual dry sense of humor. “But, I’m truly honored. You look at the other people up there, some fantastic former instructors and

students. Wow.” Hughes was known for his relaxed, engaging style in the classroom, often sprinkled with a dash of his offbeat sense of humor. It was more of a story-telling session, often including his own experiences, rather than reading from textbook material. “Randy is perhaps the most engaging teacher I have had the opportunity to work with,” said former CHS principal Todd Wolverton, now principal at North Fayette Valley High School. “Randy could hold the attention of kids that didn’t give two HUGHES | 2A
