Galen Zumbach is an adjunct agricultural instructor at Southwestern Community College after a 33-year career as agriculture teacher and FFA adviser at Creston High School. He will be inducted into the Creston High School Hall of Fame tonight.

When Galen Zumbach came to Creston in 1977 as Creston High School agriculture education instructor and FFA adviser, he told CHS Principal Ron Levine to expect a short stay. “I told Ron Levine I had just finished my master’s, and I thought I would be here at least three years and then probably go back and finish my doctorate,” said Zum-

bach, an Iowa State University graduate who grew up on a family farm near Coggin in northeast Iowa. He exceeded those three years by three decades, retiring in 2010 after building one of the elite FFA programs in the state’s history. “First, I like a challenge, and getting the program going when I got here was a challenge,” said Zumbach. “Then you meet friends and you develop relationships. Coaching (football) was a big part of that. The corps of teachers who stayed for years and years — Dick Bergstrom, John Rose, Randy Hughes, Vanita Moberg, Dennis Kuyper. You could go on and on. Creston was a destination for teachers then, not a stopping point.

All of a sudden you realize five, six years down the road that this is home.” And tonight, Zumbach will receive a special honor in his adopted hometown. He joins Linda Lucas Walling and Dannie Stephens as new inductees in the Creston High School Hall of Fame. Induction will take place during a ceremony at 7 p.m. in the CHS auditorium, followed by coronation of the 2016 homecoming queen. The event will be livestreamed online in collaboration of CHS and KSIB Radio, with the link on the home page of ksibradio.com. The 63-year-old Zumbach was selected as a “Distinguished Faculty” inductee by the CHS Hall of Fame Committee.

“It’s neat,” Zumbach said. “I had been a part of the process of selecting some of the individuals who received it in the past, and many of those people are close personal friends that I came into this community with as a young person.” Currently, Zumbach is an adjunct agricultural instructor at Southwestern Community College and in his fifth year as a member of the Creston Community Schools Board of Directors. Zumbach said there were efforts by his family and friends in north Linn County for him to return to his roots, but he saw potential in Creston students. The Iowa Geocachers Organization (IGO) is bringing its annual Hike-N-Seek event to Creston this weekend. Geocaching is a game in which participants use Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites to locate hidden caches and log that those caches have been found. Hike-N-Seek runs Friday through Sunday with various

events taking place throughout the weekend. In conjunction with HikeN-Seek, local geocachers have placed about 250 new caches in the area. Roger Lanning, who has been placing caches, said the Hike N Seek event will cover a large area. “It really starts at about Lake Icaria to the west and then all around Creston and Green Valley Lake, Three Mile Lake, Twelve Mile Lake,” he said. “It looks like there’s (caches) going on the Mormon Trail going about as far east as Osceola.” According to Lanning, last week there were about 125 people signed up on the IGO website to attend the event. But, he estimates with the forecast looking good for the weekend, more people will CACHE | 9A
