Even since his retirement in 2006, Dannie Stephens has been on the go helping the youth of Creston and Union County. Stephens taught math in the Creston school district for 26 years and served several different stints as a wrestling coach in Creston from 1967 through today. Even outside of the Creston Community School Dis-
trict, Stephens lends his time as a member of both Union County Saddle Club and the Union County Fair Board. For his years of dedication to Creston Schools, Stephens has been named one of three inductees in the Creston High School Hall of Fame Class of 2016. He will be inducted into the hall of fame during a ceremony 7 p.m. Thursday in the CHS auditorium. Stephens was nominated for inclusion in the hall of fame by former colleague Vanita Moberg. In her letter of nomination, Moberg wrote: “I just don’t think you can find a better individual, Dannie Stephens, to honor on Creston High School’s Hall of Fame, especially one who qualifies in each area of recognition: Distinguished Alumni, Distinguished Faculty and Dis-
tinguished Contributor.”
Creston roots Stephens was born April 9, 1950, at Creston Hospital. He is the oldest of six children of John and Ruby Stephens. He attended Shannon City Community School through third grade. When the East Union School District was formed, he enrolled in the Creston School District. It was a big change for Stephens, going from a combined third- and fourthgrade classroom at Shannon City to the bigger classes at Creston. But, ultimately, it was a change that paid off for Stephens. “My folks thought I’d be better off in Creston schools,” Stephens said. “At that time, Creston was a stronger school system than East Union with the reorga-
nization. For me, it worked out well because East Union didn’t have wrestling when I graduated.” Wrestling became a big part of Stephens’ life. He competed on Creston’s wrestling team all four years of high school, lettering for three years and qualifying for state at 112 pounds in 1968. Wrestling provided one of the highlights of his high school years, when Creston tied West Des Moines Valley for the district wrestling championship in 1968. “That was the first state type of competition Creston had any team honors,” Stephens said. “We had four qualifiers that year. Valley had nine to districts. We Contributed photo by JERRY HARTMAN ended up tying them for the Pictured is 2016 Creston High School Hall of Fame inductee district title. Fansteel Wellman Dynamics administration filed for bankruptcy about a week ago, the second bankruptcy for the company in the past 15 years. Fansteel Chief Restructuring Officer Ronald Reuter said the bankruptcy was for the purpose of addressing a maturing bank note sold to a third party. “The company board made a decision, as an opportunity to address this senior lending creditor that
Wellman, to transition to a strategic lending relationship,” Reuter said. The bankruptcy was filed under chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code in the United States Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of Iowa, which is described as a reorganization. In this type of financial decision, a plan of reorganization is proposed in order to keep the business going and jobs in place. “A financial plan had already been underway several months prior to improve the company’s financial
past,” said James Mahoney, Fansteel chief executive officer. “The plan has led to identifying substantial improvements and production opportunities with its current worldwide customers. The link with the customers is projected to lead Wellman in the near term to a more profitable and growing business.” The restructuring plan is still early in the proceedings. Reuter said a plan like this generally requires presentation of approval of the classes FANSTEEL | 2A
