Snowstorm, hospitality leads to Gits opening in Creston in 1945

Gits Manufacturing plant in Creston — an employment fixture here for just shy of 70 years — is permanently closing. The company made the closure official Monday when they informed Creston Mayor Warren Woods via letter.

In all, 78 local jobs will be lost because of the closure.

The first round of terminations is expected on or about Nov. 18. The entire business site is expected to be “lights out” and closed by the summer of 2014.

“It’s absolutely disappointing,” said Wayne Pantini, Union County Development Association executive director.

“Anytime people lose employment it becomes a difficult situation for Pantini them and their family. Also, a closure like this is also tough on the community, especially when you lose a pillar industry like Gits Manufacturing who has been here since 1945.”

Gits employees in Creston primarily manufacture airflow valves for diesel engines and turbo charger applications.

However, production for those products will now be made by employees in plants in Juarez, Mexico, and Taicang, China.

“It’s certainly upsetting,” said Woods. “It’s a tough deal Woods for the employees and for the city of Creston, because Gits is a long-standing fixture in our community and always been a good partner for the city. But, unfortunately, there isn’t much we can do about it. Them moving these jobs out of the country is a sign of the times. Hopefully, someday, those jobs can stay here (in the United States.)”

Terminations at Gits Manufacturing plant in Creston will be done in five stages.

Those terminations are expected to be in November, December, January and March. The final terminations are expected in June 2014 with the lights being turned off that day.

The first products for Gits were lubricating devices and oil cups, and in early advertising, they claimed to be the “Original Designers of the Practical Spring Hinge Cup.” In 1944, story has it, Gits was traveling via train to Chicago after vacationing in Colorado. He was forced to stay overnight in Creston because of a terrible snowstorm and was so overwhelmed by the hospitality toward him and the helpfulness of the Creston people, that he decided to open an assembly plant in Creston.

Gits announced Monday via letter the Creston site would be closing permanently. 78 local jobs will be affected by the closure.

However, over the past eight years the headcount dwindled to 78 manufacturing employees.

“I’m not aware they ever had any layoffs,” Pantini said.

“The reduction of employees over the years mostly came through attrition. They were just not filling positions.”

Pantini said he was notified and has been preparing for the closure of Gits Manufacturing in Creston. Pantini and others plan to meet with Gits employees for a rapid response meeting today. (See sidebar story, above right) In that meeting, Pantini

Patricia Auffert, 72, of Parnell, Mo., died Sept. 17, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo. Mass of Auffert Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, Sept. 21, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Parnell. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Parnell. A family rosary will be held 6 p.m. today at the church. Patricia Ann Auffert, daughter of Theola (Baker) and Dennis Bradley, was born June 2, 1941, in Kent.

Patricia was a graduate of Afton High School and attended Northwest State Teachers College in

Maryville, Mo. On July 17, 1965, Patricia married Philip J. Auffert in Afton.

Patricia was a homemaker and had been an elementary teacher at the former St. Patrick’s and St. Mary’s Schools in Maryville and did substitute teaching at Northeast Nodaway School in Ravenwood, Mo. Patricia was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 528, all of Parnell.

Patricia is survived by her husband Philip of Parnell; daughters, Catherine and Lynette Auffert, both of Parnell; sons, Timothy (Richard Webb) of Raytown, Mo., and Damian (Dana) of Parnell; grandchildren, Jesse, Dalton, Dakota, and Dalanie Auffert; sisters, Marietta (Ruben) Baltz of Fayetteville, Ark., Kathy (Ken) Waller of Johnston and Diane (Monty) Ide of Shannon City; brothers, Joe (Dorothy) Bradley of Algona, Jim (Sherry) Bradley of Arispe, Steve (Sandy) Bradley of Oelwein and Phillip (Patty) Bradley of Afton; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

‘Sin taxes’ help keep Iowa in the black DES MOINES (MCT) Wall St. list, but Iowa isn’t — If the Bible is correct, the wages of sin are death. In this life, however, Iowans’ vices — smoking, drinking and gambling — generate a tidy sum for the state treasury.

In fiscal 2012, Iowa reaped $710.6 million from so-called “sin taxes.” Although that was 4.8 percent of the state’s total revenues of $14.65 billion, it was far less than the $3.7 billion in individual income taxes and $2.1 billion in sales taxes Iowans paid in fiscal 2011, the Legislative Services Agency reports.

However, the agency and 24/7 Wall St. employ different methodology, making a comparison impossible. Iowa’s sin tax collections would have ranked fourth on the 24/7

even in the site’s top 10.

Perhaps it’s a testament to Iowans’ virtue, but the $233 per capita in sin tax collections is low compared with states profiting most from those taxes.

Gaming revenue amounts to 42 percent of the $710.6 million collected in 2012, according to the agency’s Fiscal Services Division. Cigarette and tobacco taxes amount to another 32 percent.

The agency projects tobacco-related tax revenue falling from $225 million to $218 million by fiscal 2014.

Sixth Ride for Hospice to be held Oct. 5 Motorcycles will rumble through southern Iowa as riders come together to benefit terminally-ill patients and their families in the Greater Regional Ride for Hospice 2013.

On Oct. 5, motorcycle enthusiasts will travel 125 miles to raise funds for Greater Regional Hospice, a nonprofit organization serving patients in Adair, Adams, Clarke, Decatur, Madison, Ringgold, Taylor and Union counties.

The route will begin and end at the gazebo near

Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston, with a meal served at noon prior to the motorcycle ride.

Registration begins at noon. Preregistration is encouraged and may be completed at www.GreaterRegional.org. Registration fees are $30 per motorcycle.

All registration fees include an official ride T-shirt and a meal. Additional T-shirts may be purchased for $15.

Accident: Creston emergency personnel work to remove an injured woman from a vehicle after a two-car accident on West

Taylor Street Thursday. Eric Daniel Batsom, 24, 301 N. Division St., was cited for failure to yield upon a left turn after the accident 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at Wyoming Avenue and West Taylor Street. According to a Creston Police report, Batsom, driving a 2006 Mitsubishi west on Taylor, attempted to turn south at the intersection of Wyoming and Taylor. According to the driver and witnesses, a third non-reporting vehicle was stopped in traffic traveling east, waiting to turn north onto Wyoming from Taylor. According to witnesses, Batsom could not see oncoming traffic and proceeded into the far south traffic lane in an attempt to enter a parking lot. Sydney Christine Ruse, 20, of Greenfield, driving a 2010 Mazda east on West Taylor, was overtaking the third party when she collided head-on with Batsom’s vehcile. Amanda Marie Preston, 19, of Lenox, a passenger in Batsom’s vehicle, not wearing a seat belt, was injured. Ruse, the sole occupant in her vehicle, was also injured and required extrication by Creston Fire Department.

Batsom appeared to be unharmed. Air bags in both vehicles were deployed. Ruse and Preston were both transported to Greater Regional Medical Center, where their condition is not available. Damage estimates are $8,000 to both Batsom’s and Ruse’s vehicles.

Syria’s Assad says agreement to give up chemical arsenal is unconditional WASHINGTON (MCT) — Syrian President Bashar Assad said Wednesday that he is committed to relinquishing Syria’s chemical arsenal without conditions and as quickly as possible in a Fox News Channel interview that is the latest installment in a charm offensive intended to counter portrayals of him as a bloodthirsty dictator.

Responding to questions for an hour, Assad appeared as a mild-mannered bureaucrat explaining in fluent English why he’s waging an unfortunate but necessary war against al-Qaida extremists, the same ones who fought U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He bristled at calling the rebel forces fighting to topple him as “opposition” and claimed that 80 percent to 90 percent are al-Qaida-linked terrorists. He played down the high death toll of the war, claiming that most of those killed were terrorists.

“Opposition doesn’t mean to carry weapons and kill people, innocents, and to destroy schools, destroy infrastructure,” Assad said. Later in the segment, he added, “This is war. You don’t have clean war.”

He didn’t dispute U.N. findings that sarin gas was used in a deadly Aug. 21 attack, but he blamed it on the rebel forces, which he said are made up of jihadists who’ve streamed into Syria from more than 80 countries.

He derided sarin as a “kitchen gas,” saying it can be made at home, and blamed its use on fighters that are “supported by governments,” a veiled reference to Persian Gulf rebel financiers such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

The wide-ranging interview was conducted by the network’s senior foreign affairs correspondent, Greg Palkot, and former Democratic congressman Dennis Kucinich, who’s a commentator for the network and has met Assad on previous occasions. Last week, Assad granted an interview to Charlie Rose of CBS and PBS, but canceled an interview he’d arranged with George Stephanopoulos of ABC. Analysts say the strategy behind Assad’s media blitz goes beyond simply avoiding a U.S. strike in retaliation for deadly chemical attacks.

matter how brutal his regime appears to outsiders, the alternative is worse.

At every opportunity, Assad drove home the fact that the rebel movement is dominated by Islamist militants who’ve carried out beheadings, car bombings and other terrorist acts the regime knows will strike a chord with an American audience. Assad, as he did in the earlier CBS interview, pointedly mentioned an incident where a rebel leader was captured on video cutting an organ from a dead Syrian soldier’s body and taking a bite from it.

At another point in the Fox interview, Assad referred to the United States as “the greatest country in the world.”

Pintak, who’s interviewed the late Saddam Hussein, Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe and several other dictators, said Assad’s understated persona and background as an eye doctor who was educated in England are benefits to his media campaign. His clean-shaven, business-suited image makes for a stark juxtaposition with bearded, gun-toting rebels waving the black flag of militant Islamists.

“It’s public diplomacy at its best,” Pintak said. “It’s

fascinating to watch someone who operates in a completely controlled media environment being so deft at managing his own image in the West.”

It also helps Assad’s cause, analysts note, that the American public doesn’t need much persuading when it comes to staying out of Syria’s bloody civil war. Poll results repeatedly have shown how unpopular any form of U.S. intervention is, even after a steady flow of amateur videos showing the death and suffering in a conflict that’s already claimed more than 100,000 lives and forced millions from their homes.

oppose not only direct U.S. strikes, survey results show, but indirect help such as arming the rebels who are fighting Assad’s forces.

Assad clearly was aware of those polls, saying in response to a question from Kucinich that Obama should listen to the American people.

“Listen to your people.

Follow the common sense of your people,” Assad said when asked what message he would send to Obama.

OPINION Achievement is a dream itself

My feet hit the concrete hard as I ran past a Japanese garden and gazebo overlooking the Des Moines River, then ran up to a bridge crossing the water.

The breeze cooled me off while I ran in the Diva Dash 5K in Des Moines over the weekend. I occasionally saw my mom, sister and aunt on the path, and waved at them if we passed each other.

I loved running the 5K, and even got a sparkling medal from it, but the coolest thing about the Diva Dash wasn’t the face paint, or the temporary pink hair dye. It was the theme of the race.

over was dedicated to all “women of achievement.” The bridge is called the Iowa Women of Achievement Bridge, and is part of the Principal Riverwalk near the capitol building.

I smiled when I saw the sign at the bridge. It really hit home with me, because I am a woman, and I’m trying to achieve something.

Looking at Miss America’s

crowning Sunday, I’m disgusted by the reactions of so many people.

Many people called Nina Davuluri an Arab and terrorist, despite the fact she was born in New York to Indian parents.

Even though I never want to stand in front of a crowd of millions in a bikini to earn a crown, I applaud those women. They have all accomplished something amazing in their lifetimes. Originally Miss New York, Davuluri is planning to apply to medical school.

Miss Kansas, Theresa Vail, is in the military. Miss Iowa, Nicole Kelly of Keokuk, has a goal of earning a master’s degree in theater manage-

ment.

I want to achieve something in my life, just as these women have.

Miss America may not be high on someone’s list for “achievement,” but it’s something. It gives the women the power to speak out for what they believe in and create ripples to start something.

I never expected the Diva Dash to become so personal to me.

Three miles of cool air, pounding music, robin’s egg blue sky and water sparkling like diamonds, and I never thought I would be thinking more about what I wanted to do with my life at that point than I had in the past 10 months.

I’ve always felt, living in a small town all my life, I would leave, get a job at some high-rise publishing company in some city that houses hundreds of thousands of people, make friends, climb the social and career ladder and get married. But, the more I think about it, the more I realize how much work a dream like that actually takes.

That’s my dream: to achieve something. I want to succeed in what I set my mind to. I want to create something good, something lasting, so people will appreciate life and what it has to offer. That’s what I want to do, my dream, to achieve something.

Here is the information to help you: Sweat won’t stain if you let antiperspirant or deodorant dry prior to putting on your clothes.

Before washing shirts, pretreat the underarm areas with undiluted liquid laundry detergent.

Pretreat existing underarm stains with household vinegar to help dissolve the perspiration.

illed with mesmerizing trinkets and gadgets — your home is a new and exciting world for your small child to explore. But this new world can introduce serious and sometimes surprising safety issues that many parents do not realize are risks.

Hidden concerns in common household devices

As your children happily toddle around your home, they may come in contact with unknown safety issues scattered throughout. One issue you may not have considered is coin lithium batteries, about the size of a nickel, which can be found around most homes in everyday items like remote controls, keyless entry devices for your car, sound-enabled books and a variety of health and fitness devices. Because many of these devices are not regulated as children’s toys, the battery compartments often are very easy to open. Children are naturally drawn to these devices, as many include buttons that are fun to play with and push.

The danger of these batteries is very real. If a coin-sized lithium battery is swallowed by a small child, it can get caught in the esophagus. The battery can react with saliva and cause a chemical reaction that can lead to severe injuries in as little as two hours. Unfortunately, many parents do not know about the issue. In fact, a recent survey showed 62 percent of parents reported being unaware of the risk associated with coin lithium batteries.

Spread the word

In an effort to help keep children safe, Energizer and the National Safety Council are working together to educate parents and caregivers on the steps they can take to help prevent these injuries.

“We know parents and caregivers are constantly thinking about their children’s safety, but we want to bring awareness to an issue still unknown to many families,” said Amy Heinzen, Program Manager of Grants and Strategic Initiatives for the National Safety Council. “Coin lithium battery safety needs to be top of mind and we hope parents will take the time to learn about the issue with these four simple steps to help children be safe.”

The 4 S’s of coin lithium battery safety

Make your home safer and spread awareness with four simple steps to store, select, secure and share information about this hidden safety concern.

Store. Awareness of the issue is a good start, but making sure you have a game plan is even better. If you currently have coin lithium batteries in your home, store them where little hands can’t get them and little eyes can’t see them. It’s also important to not let children use devices powered by these batteries as toys.

In fact, 45 percent of parents admit to letting their kids play with their keys, remotes and similar devices, which could very likely include a coin lithium battery.

Select. When you are in need of coin lithium batteries, it is important to do your research in advance, and select battery packaging that meets the strict guidelines set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for child resistance. Energizer was the first to introduce 20 millimeter coin lithium battery packaging that meets these criteria, restricting a child’s ability to get in the package, while still allowing adults to easily open it with scissors.

Secure. If the battery compartment door opens in the hands of a child, it becomes a potential hazard. It is essential to secure the battery doors of all devices powered by coin lithium batteries, including the keyless entry devices found on most car keys. You can also look for devices that feature a screwed back for additional security.

Share. Finally, you are encouraged to share this

information, whether online with your friends, at playgroups or daycare, so every family can take the same steps to protect their children.

Norton dies LAS VEGAS — Former heavyweight champion Ken Norton, who beat Muhammad Ali and then lost a controversial decision to him in Yankee Stadium, died Wednesday at a local care facility, his son said. He was 70.

Norton had been in poor health for the last several years after suffering a series of strokes, a friend of the fighter said.

Norton broke Ali’s jaw in their first bout, beating him by split decision in 1973 in a non-title fight in San Diego. They fought six months later, and Ali narrowly won a split decision. They met for a third time on Sept. 28, 1976, at Yankee Stadium and Ali narrowly won to keep his heavyweight title.

Norton would come back the next year to win a heavyweight title eliminator and was declared champion by the World Boxing Council. But on June 9, 1978, he lost a bruising 15-round fight to Larry Holmes in what many regard as one of boxing’s epic heavyweight bouts and would never be champion again.

Norton finished with a record of 42-7-1 and 33 knockouts. He would later embark on an acting career, appearing in several movies, and was a commentator at fights.

Richardson moves BEREA, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns traded powerful running back Trent Richardson to Indianapolis in a stunning move just two games into the season and one year after drafting Richardson in the first round.

The team’s new front office dealt Richardson for a first-round draft pick next year, when the team will have two openinground selections and 10 overall. Cleveland is rebuilding again and the team hopes to use those picks — seven in the first four rounds — to help turn around a floundering franchise.

Such a reversal was what the Browns had in mind when they took Richardson with the No. 3 overall pick in 2012. The former Alabama standout seemed to have it all: power, speed and good hands.

Moving on LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska is ready to move on from Bo Pelini’s profane rant against fans two years ago.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman and athletic director Shawn Eichorst said in a joint statement Wednesday that they believe the football coach was sincere in his apology for what he said in an audio leaked to the Deadspin.com sports website this week.

There was no mention of any disciplinary action taken against Pelini.

“The comments made

by Head Football Coach Bo Pelini in 2011, published Monday, are unfortunate and deeply concerning to us, as they would be to anyone who loves this university,” the statement said. “Our coaches, staff and studentathletes must be held to a high standard and Coach Pelini’s remarks were unfair to the legions of Nebraska fans and not what we expect from a representative of this university.”

An ADM team that has recovered well from losing its primary playmakers from a year ago hosts Creston/OM in a key Class 3A District 1 game Friday night in Adel.

The Tigers (2-1) are coming off a 48-38 victory over Glenwood in last week’s district opener. Grant Goeden has stepped in well for last year’s star running back, Jordan Grove, as he capped a 219-yard rushing effort with two fourth-quarter touchdowns in leading the Tigers’ rally past the Rams.

The Tigers trailed 38-33 in the fourth period before Goeden scored on runs of 14 and 3 yards.

“He (Goeden) was mostly at wide receiver against Dallas Center-Grimes, but against Winterset he was at running back,” said Creston/O-M coach Brian Morrison.

Gone from last year’s 6-4 squad are quarterback Kyle Herrick, who passed for 1,927 yards and 14 TDs, and Grove, who rushed for 1,867 yards and 17 TDs. Grove and tackle Noah Taylor have joined former Creston/O-M Panthers Collin Bevins and Keaton Hulett at Northwest Missouri State University.

Last year, the Tigers forced four turnovers in handing the Panthers their first loss, 3419, in Creston.

Spartans sweep Iowa Central

It took a few points for the Southwestern Community College volleyball team to get going here Wednesday, but once things started clicking, the Spartans breezed through a tough competitor in Iowa Central.

The Spartans swept the Tritons, which received votes in the latest national poll, 25-23, 25-12, 25-17.

“A big win,” Southwestern head coach Melissa Blessington said.

“They’ve been to nationals two years in a row, so we knew they had a great team. We knew we just had to come in and I said at the beginning of the match, if we take care of our side, what they do on their side, we’ll be fine.”

Blessington said the level of competition Southwestern saw over the weekend at the Marshalltown Invitational helped prepare the Spartans to take on Iowa Central,

which came into Wednesday’s ICCAC matchup with a 2-0 mark in the conference. The Tritons dropped to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in the conference with the loss.

Southwestern, meanwhile, improves to 14-7 for the season and draws to .500 in the ICCAC at 2-2.

Raiders host high-powered Colfax-Mingo

The Mount Ayr Raiders, ranked second in Class 1A by the Des Moines Register, opens up district play at home Friday against a high-powered offensive team from ColfaxMingo.

The game will be part of “Shaken Baby Syndrome Awareness Night” in Mount Ayr. Mount Ayr defeated Clarinda last week, 15-3, to improve to 3-0 for the season.

In preparations for that game, the Raiders prepared for Clarinda’s unique single wing offense.

The Cardinals did not run the single wing against Mount Ayr, instead opting to run a wishbone offense, but the Raiders prepared all week for the single wing.

Now, the Raiders prepare for the opposite of the single wing, as they prepare for Colfax-Mingo’s wide open spread offense.

The Tigerhawks enter Friday’s matchup with a 2-1 record overall and 0-1 in Class 1A District 7.

Colfax-Mingo defeated Saydel 63-47 and Southeast Warren 50-14 before losing to a top-10 Van Meter team 6719 last week.

The Tigerhawks rank second in District 7 in total offense with 1,116 total yards through three games.

Quarterback Jared Myers ranks first in the state with 770 passing yards on 42 completions out of 69 attempts. He has tossed eight touchdowns.

Myers also leads the team in rushing with 183 yards and three touchdowns on 38 attempts. He ranks second in Class 1A in total yards.

Sam Smith is the leading receiver for the Tigerhawks, catching 12 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns.

Blake Summy has 11 catches for 253 yards and two touchdowns.

“The Colfax-Mingo offense will present a new challenge for the Raiders,” Mount Ayr co-head coach Delwyn Showalter said. “The Tigerhawks

will line up in a spread formation all night with four or five receivers running routes on almost every play.”

Smith is also dangerous in the return game, as he averages 39.5 yards per kickoff return this season on six returns, with one of those returns going for a touchdown.

Defensively, the Tigerhawks will line up in a 3-5 alignment, crowding the line of scrimmage in attempt to take away the running game.

Colfax-Mingo has forced 10 turnovers in its first three games.

Mount Ayr quarterback Jacob Sobotka, who left last week’s win against Clarinda with an ankle injury, appears to be ready to go for the Raiders.

Sobotka is the leading rusher for the Raiders with 267 yards and three touchdowns on 33 attempts, averaging 8.1 yards per carry. The Raiders like to spread the ball around in the running game, however, as 15 different players have carried the ball this year.

Sobotka is 24-of-46 passing for 412 yards and four touchdowns compared to one interception this year.

Sophomore Jacob Taylor is the leading receiver for the Raiders with 134 yards and one touchdown on four catches. Kyle Dolecheck, another sophomore, has six catches for 99 yards. Lincoln Martin has 94 yards and two scores on four catches, while Erik Freed has caught eight passes for 73 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, linebackers Riley Weehler and Cody Stackhouse are the leading tacklers for Mount Ayr, with 25 total tackles, each. Weehler has six solo tackles for loss.

Weehler also has one interception and three fumble recoveries this season. Dolecheck has intercepted two passes.

Area cross country Rankings update The latest edition of the Iowa Track Coaches’ team rankings, released Wednesday, sees the Creston boys cross country team ranked for the very first time under head coach Pat Schlapia.

The Panthers are rated 15th in Class 3A after their performance at the Ballard Cross Country Invitational on Monday. Creston won the Class B division by 19 points over second-place Nevada. Ballard, which was previously ranked 11th

in Class 3A, finished third in the Class B division.

Boone and Pella are ranked second and third in Class 3A, while Harlan is ranked ninth and Perry is ranked 14th. Perry bested Creston by five points for the team title at Greene County last week.

In the Class 3A girls rankings, Pella is ranked third and Harlan fifth. Dallas Center-Grimes is currently ranked 10th.

Sports briefs Pep bus Creston High School is taking a pep bus to Friday’s football game against ADM at Adel.

Cost is $2 for the bus plus $3 at ADM for admission.

Departure is 5:30 p.m. Signup deadline is noon Friday in the high school office. A minimum of 25 will be required to take the bus.

YMCA news Southern Prairie YMCA is offering two new programs for the preschool age child. Little Picasso is for children ages 3-5 years old. This program is designed to be fun for kids who love to draw, paint and explore. Various arts and crafts are geared toward the preschool child in a fun environment. Little Picasso is Saturday mornings, 1111:45 a.m. October through May with a new class start-

ing every month. Registration deadline is one week prior to the first Saturday of the month.

Gym and Swim is a combination of gym activities and swimming. It includes using small gym equipment, playing games, and learning basic swim skills through fun activities. Gym and Swim is Oct. 12 and 26 from 8:30-9:45 a.m. Gym and Swim is for children ages 3-5 years old. Registration deadline is Oct. 5.

Group swimming lessons at the Southern Prairie YMCA are scheduled for Saturday mornings in October. These lessons are for children age 4 and up.

Class size is limited. Registration deadline is Sept. 27.

East Union 3, Nodaway Valley 2 GREENFIELD — Nodaway Valley and East Union waged a good Pride of Iowa Conference volleyball battle here Tuesday night, with the Eagles rallying to win, 14-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-10.

“The team really pulled together to get the win,” said East Union coach Gail Thatcher. “Kali Mertens led the team in kills with 15.

Courtney Phelps moved the ball around well to set up the hitters.”

Phelps finished with 33 assists.

“The girls have improved and are really starting to play together as a team,” coach West said. “We just need to fight all the way through to the finish. We did a great job of mixing up our sets and getting all of our hitters involved. We also had great defensive plays.”

Megan McIntosh and Emily Schildberg each had 13 kills for the Wolverines.

Josie Carter had 34 setting assists, Katy Ehrsam led the team with 19 digs and McIntosh had five total blocks.

At the service line, Rachel Jacobson was 18-21 with four aces, Sidney Hohertz was 20-22 with two aces and Christine Gross was 17-17 with two aces.

Murray 3, Melcher-Dallas 0 MURRAY — Eleventhranked Murray wasted little time in disposing of Melcher-Dallas Tuesday, sweeping the Saints 25-6, 2512, 25-11.

The Mustangs improved to 4-0 overall and in conference play. Melcher-Dallas fell to 3-1 in the league and 5-2 overall.

“Another well-rounded game for the Lady Mus-

tangs,” coach Jerry Shields said. “Our serving is improving a great deal.”

Hannah Barber was 21-21 serving with five aces and Chellsea Jones finished 1819 with five aces. As a team, Murray was 71-73 with 14 aces.

Kate Patton was 45-45 setting with 18 assists.

Barber was outstanding in all phases, going 16-18 as a hitter with Patton eight kills, along with a team-high 10 digs and 4-4 i serve receive.

“We really struggled in game one with our passing and serve receive, which never allowed us to get any type of offense going,” said Southwest Valley coach Lindsay Wetzel. “We struggled with serving, especially when we were down in points and needed to put the ball down. We managed to clean up our game enough to get the win.”

17 carries. Leading receivers are Bryce Briley with four catches for 110 yards and Gavin Leith with three receptions for 104 yards. Both have two touchdowns.

Eight different receivers have caught at least two passes this season for the Panthers.

But, not among them is junior Alex Nielsen, with one catch for 13 yards.

Nielsen had a monster JV game offensively on Monday, running for 212 yards and five touchdowns, while also passing 10-of-15 for 141 yards and an 11-yard TD. Morrison, however, said Nielsen’s real value to the varsity right now is at the back end of the rebuilt Panther secondary. Nielsen has three interceptions already, including two last week against Atlantic.

“He’s still practicing at receiver, and he’s our No. 2 quarterback,” Morrison said.

“But we need him to focus on

being a really good free safety for us. Our secondary is green, so we need to get good. And for that to happen, he needs to be a one-way player for us right now. We have some nice Y’s (tight ends) in Gavin Leith and Levi Eblen.”

Atlantic game Coming out of last week’s 28-14 victory over Atlantic, Morrison said there were plenty of positive elements amidst the frustration about penalties and turnovers.

“We outgained them something like 375 to 140. We played good football,” Morrison said. “We just can’t afford to have nine penalties for 60-some yards, or have three fumbles, against good teams and win. We’re playing good, now we have to play smart.

This is a big game for both teams in trying to get to 2-0 in the district.”

Joey Stumbles Joey Logano, driver of the No. 22 Penske Racing Ford, is the only Chase rookie in this season’s expanded field of contenders.

As (bad) luck would have it, he was the first driver fighting for the 2013 title to exit the race at Chicagoland. Reason out: blown engine.

“We got to keep our heads up and keep the momentum that we have and not let this take us down,” he said. “With only 10 races, you really can’t have these issues, but we are strong enough to come back from it.”

In the past five years, only Jimmie Johnson has roared back from such a horrible Chase start to win the title (2010).

MUM’S THE WORD

Michael Waltrip Racing was fined heavily for team shenanigans at Richmond. All three of its drivers lost 50 championship points, and that points loss pulled Martin Truex from the Chase playoffs.

But as NASCAR cleaned up its Richmond mess, Clint Bowyer refused to admit he spun his No. 15 Waltrip Racing Toyota with seven laps to go in order to assist Truex in claiming a Chase berth.

Bowyer apologized to Ryan Newman, who was directly affected by the spin, and said he was sorry for what happened, but apparently decided to take the Fifth on his complicity in the scheme to assist his teammate.

Not only is there strong video and audio evidence, but eyewitness Dale Earnhardt Jr. stepped forward to say that Bowyer was purposely slowing in order to make the damning spin harmless to his racing machine.

“You asked about a line being crossed and obviously MWR stepped over that line,” Bowyer said. “We got penalized and then — like I said, I’ve given this interview on national television.”

Bowyer visited ESPN’s SportsCenter studio three days after the Richmond race and looked extremely uncomfortable, like he was sitting in a briar patch, during a tough line of questioning from former driver Ricky Craven. They had a backand-forth moment.

Back at Chicagoland Speedway, Bowyer played dodgeball with the media as his team prepared for the Chase.

“We’ve had a great season, and as far as that’s concerned (Richmond), we know re-

ally — we know where the line is,” he said.

And no, that “line” of which Bowyer speaks doesn’t involve an admission of guilt.

Any chance of calm this week?

LOST IN THE SAUCE With the Richmond hullabaloo, some major racing news was trampled, such as Ryan Newman being named as the driver of the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevy in 2014.

Newman will replace departing veteran Jeff Burton. Did you see that AJ Allmendinger will be in the No. 47 Toyota next season? And Furniture Row Racing will remain aligned with Childress Racing for the foreseeable future.

NASCAR is due for several days of ho-hum heading into New Hampshire, and the stars just may be aligned. Last week was one of the worst in the past decade for NASCAR, which found itself dealing with credibility issues stemming from the previous week at Richmond.

But if the sight of Matt Kenseth — the walking, talking definition of calm — hoisting the trophy at Chicagoland didn’t signal a return to peace and quiet, there may be no hope.

Final thoughts on NASCAR’s damage control?

The Boys in Competition should’ve seen the potential for shenanigans long before they happened at Richmond. But they either dropped the ball or put too much faith in the teams — um, let’s go with “dropped the ball.” But after the fact, NASCAR couldn’t win. In the end, however, they probably made the best of a bad situation.

Will it happen again?

Human nature never fails to overcome our better intentions and stated values. So yes, it’ll happen again, but it will be better hidden. Much better hidden.

All women are invited to “Doorways to Wellness of Body, Mind and Spirit” at the 2013 Metanoia Women’s Christian Retreat.

Each year, there are two retreat sessions to be held in October at the Christian Conference Center in Newton. Some women prefer to attend the weekday sessions 3 p.m. Oct. 9 through 1 p.m. Oct. 11, while others prefer to attend the weekend sessions 3:30 p.m.

Farm real estate value in Iowa jumps 20 percent WATERLOO (MCT) — The value of Iowa farm real estate jumped again last year.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture survey says the average value of Iowa agriculture real estate increased 20 percent, to $8,400 an acre from August 2012 to August 2013.

Iowa agriculture real estate values outgained all neighboring states, except North Dakota, where an energy boom fueled a 36.3 percent increase in values, to an average of $1,690 an acre.

Wisconsin edged up by only 1 percent, to $4,400 an acre.

Illinois went up by 16.4 percent, to $7,800 an acre. Minnesota increased 17.3 percent, to $4,750; South Dakota, 28.6 percent, $1,800; Nebraska, 17.8 percent, $3,050; and Missouri, 6.9 percent, $3,100.

On average, cropland values across the U.S. grew by 9.4 percent, to $2,900, last year.

Iowa’s $8,400 per-acre farm real estate value ranked only behind the relatively tiny, largely urbanized Northeastern states New Jersey, at $12,700; Rhode Island, at $11,800; Connecticut, $11,000; and Massachusetts, $10,600.

Values in those states either lost as much as 9 percent in Connecticut or gained as much as 4.1 percent, in New Jersey, over the past year, the USDA reported.

“The biggest thing that’s been driving it has been the increase in farm income,” said Michael Duffy, Iowa State University extension farm management specialist and economics professor of economics, who conducts a yearly land value survey each year.

Iowa cropland value increased by 17.8 percent, to $8,600 per acre in the last year.

In all, farmland values across the state have jumped by 64 percent since 2010, Duffy said.

“This started back about 2007, when corn and soybean prices took off,” he said.

“There was a little correction in 2009, but since then, prices have been extremely favorable and we’ve seen record

levels of farm income. That’s been translated into record land values.”

Regional changes in the average value of farm real estate ranged from a 23.1 percent increase in the Northern Plains region to no change in the Southeast region.

The Mountain region had the lowest farm real estate value in the U.S., at $1,020 per acre.

U.S. cropland value increased by $460 per acre, or 13 percent, to $4,000 per acre.

In the Northern Plains and Corn Belt regions, the average cropland value increased 25.0 and 16.1 percent, respectively, from the previous year.

In the Southeast region, cropland values decreased by 2.8 percent.

Pasture value in Iowa increased by 13.3 percent in the last year, to $3,400 per acre.

Across the country, pasture value increased by 4.3 percent, to $1,200 an acre.

Much of the gain, however, is not current, said Troy Louwagie, land consultant and real estate broker with Hertz Farm Management Inc., which has farm operations in Waterloo, across Iowa and several other states.

“In my opinion, land prices

are flat to soft since March or April,” he said.

He said land values will remain in a “holding pattern” until the current crops are in.

“I tell people as we move forward, we’re in a bit of a roller coaster,” he said. “Land is in strong hands and there’s minimal debt.”

With lower grain prices there is a potential for land prices to soften, said Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture.

“In general, high land prices do make it expensive for young farmers to get started as

their limited funds don’t go as far when land prices are high,” Northey said. “For established farmers, there is not a lot of impact from fluctuating land prices unless they are buying or selling land. The increased profitability from agriculture that has led to higher-priced land is generally a good thing for farmers and rural communities.”
