Weather keeps Balloon Days from getting off the ground ■

Creston’s 40th annual Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days event spent most of the weekend grounded because of weather. High winds and rain storms pushed through south central Iowa keeping all but one event from taking off.

All four scheduled competitive flights were cancelled, but Night Glow Saturday evening allowed a few pilots to at least get their balloons off the ground – even if they were tethered.

Roger Lanning, Southwest Iowa Hot Air Balloon Days chairperson was thrilled that the weather cooperated enough to hold at least one event.

“It was fantastic because I, first off, didn’t think we had a chance at Night G l o w and then I didn’t Lanning know that that many would glow,” Lanning said.

“It was a good show and we got them in there and the winds were favorable and we got them down before the winds came up again.”

All balloonists who participated in night glow were entered into a raffle Sunday morning. Three winners were chosen receiving $50, $75 and $100 for third through first places.

Jeremy Rubin took third, Aaron Foelske took second and Rick Goosey took home the grand prize.

window of opportunity and made that decision if I find somebody to fly, let’s fly,” said Gebhart. “And that’s how it all went. It’s a tough call.”

For the event as a whole, scattered rain showers

appeared Saturday and Sunday mornings producing lightning and moving cloud ceilings down too low. Friday evening and Saturday afternoon winds played the biggest factor for grounding balloonists.

Weatherman Dale Dommer described Friday and Saturday afternoon’s weather best with a long, drawn-out “whoosh” sound during each day’s pilot meeting.

“When the atmosphere tightens up, the gradients, the winds don’t subside, so with the rain clouds popping around it was too unstable, the weather,” said Gebhart.

With the rain especially, the cloud ceiling was too low for pilots to fly comfortably. “(Sunday) morning the ceiling was too low for us,” said Gebhart. “We have a requirement to be a certain height below the clouds and we didn’t have that coming out.”

Even with the weather forecast showing inclement weather prior to the weekend, the event still turned out 31 balloonists in all.

One less than 2016.

Lanning is continually impressed with the turnout to Creston’s Balloon Days.

With the event falling in September, the weather has now grounded six weekends over the course of the event’s 40-year history.

However, Lanning does admit that it is getting harder to draw attendee’s each year.

“It’s getting harder to get balloonists; there are fewer around,” said Lanning. “But, for a town our size, we do real well. There are other events that don’t draw this many.”

Lanning and Gebhart both thanked the balloonists, the sponsors of the event and the farmers who allow the balloonists on their land when they do fly.

Next year’s event will be held Sept. 14-16.

DEATHS Carol Pugh Arispe

Carol M. (Cheers) Pugh, 92, of Arispe died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, at Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston.

Celebration of life services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Arispe.

The Rev. Joel Sutton will officiate the service.

Burial will be in Pugh Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton. Open visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., in Afton. Memorials are suggested to Arispe United Methodist Church or East Union Dollars for Scholars.

Carol Maurine (Brock) Pugh, daughter of David Lewis Brock and Emma Grace (Smith) Brock, was born Feb. 2, 1925, on the family farm in rural Shannon City. She was educated in Arispe Consolidated Schools and graduated with the class of 1943. She attended the Iowa Teachers College in Corning and taught that fall at Tingley No. 1 in Ringgold County.

On Sept. 3, 1944, Carol married Wayne A. Cheers.

They lived on the farm until April 1978, when they moved into Arispe. While in Arispe, Carol worked as the city clerk and as a homemaker. Wayne died in 1986.

On April 26, 1990, Carol married Lester ‘Bus’ Pugh.

Together, they resided in Arispe. Lester died in 1995.

Carol was a member of Arispe United Methodist Church, of which she was a long time treasurer.

Carol is survived by her sons, Ron (Mary Lou) Cheers, Roger (Donna) Cheers and Ed (Cindy) Cheers, all of Afton; grandchildren, Sarah (William) Long, Brenda (Dusten) Carrington, Ronda (Jason) Driskill, Callista (Nick) Wilkey, Rod Cheers, Gail Cheers, Paula (Harold) Johnston, Tony Cheers (significant other Shanna), Stephanie Fluckey (significant other TJ), Joey Fluckey, Casey (Heather) Fluckey, Tara (Eric) Herzberg, Ryan (Kim) Cheers and Drew (Erin) Cheers; 37 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Wayne Cheers and Lester Pugh; step son David Pugh; grandson-in-law Philip Riemenschneider; sisters, Roberta (Leonard) Clark and Cleo (Carl) Shrader and infant siblings, Loyce, Florence and Berneta.

Iowa trail to have lights turned off earlier due to noise WOODWARD (AP) — A trail bridge in central Iowa will go dark 90 minutes earlier in hopes of curbing loud noises and vandalism, a move welcomed by neighbors but that some cyclists say is disappointing.

KCCI-TV reports that the Boone County Conservation Board decided to start turning off the lights on the High Trestle Trail near Woodward at 10:30 p.m. starting Sept. 25. The lights have previously been on until midnight.

The 25-mile trail runs between Ankeny and Woodward and features

blue LED lights that illuminate the trail.

Some residents who live near the trail say the noise level has gotten out of control.

“You hear, ‘Hey!’ and they’re like, screaming as loud as they can so they can hear themselves,” resident Wesley Mathes said.

“Everybody around here kind of freaks out like, ‘Oh my God, something is happening?’”

Some Iowa cities consider firework bans after complaints DES MOINES (AP) — Some Iowa cities are considering new restrictions and in some cases outright bans on fireworks after a rash of Fourth of July complaints.

The Des Moines Register reports that West Des Moines city leaders will consider a fireworks ban on Monday, while their counterparts in Des Moines discuss whether to tighten restrictions.

Protests resume after 80 arrests in St. Louis unrest ST. LOUIS (AP) — A racially mixed crowd of demonstrators locked arms and marched quietly through downtown St. Louis Monday morning to protest the acquittal of a white former police officer in the killing of a black suspect, following another night of unrest and more than 80 arrests.

The latest action follows three days of peaceful protests and three nights of violence in the city that has been rocked since Friday, when a judge announced he found Jason Stockley not guilty in the 2011 death of Anthony Lamar Smith.

Hundreds of riot police mobilized downtown late Sunday, arresting more than 80 people and seizing weapons amid reports of property damage and vandalism. The arrests came after demonstrators ignored orders to disperse, police said.

“I’m proud to tell you the city of St. Louis is safe and the police owned tonight,” Interim Police Chief Lawrence O’Toole said at a news conference early Monday.

Earlier Sunday, more than 1,000 people had gathered at police headquarters then marched without trouble through downtown St. Louis, the posh Central West End, and the trendy Delmar Loop area of nearby University City. Protesters also marched through two shopping malls in a wealthy area of St. Louis County.

By nightfall, most had gone home. The 100 or so people who remained grew

increasingly agitated as they marched back toward downtown. Along the way, they knocked over planters, broke windows at a few shops and hotels, and scattered plastic chairs at an outdoor venue.

According to police, the demonstrators then sprayed bottles with an unknown substance on officers.

One officer suffered a leg injury and was taken to a hospital. His condition wasn’t known.

Soon afterward, buses brought in additional officers in riot gear, and police scoured downtown deep into the night, making arrests and seizing at least five weapons, according to O’Toole. Later, officers in riot gear gathered alongside a city boulevard chanting “whose street, our street” — a common refrain used by the protesters — after clearing the street of demonstrators and onlookers.

“We’re in control. This is our city and we’re going to protect it,” O’Toole said.

Mayor Lyda Krewson said at the same Monday news conference that “the days have been calm and the nights have been destructive” and that “destruction cannot be tolerated.”

Early Monday, more than 150 protesters marched arm-in-arm, some carrying signs, to city hall.

Police turned traffic away as the marchers blocked a busy St. Louis street during the rush hour crush.

Once at city hall, they found their voices, chanting: “I know that we will

win.” The protesters then marched four blocks to a city court building, where they chanted again, then dispersed. The next protest is scheduled for Monday evening in University City.

The recent St. Louis protests follow a pattern seen since the August 2014 killing of Michael Brown in nearby Ferguson: The majority of demonstrators, though angry, are law-abiding. But as the night wears on, a subsection emerges, a different crowd more willing to confront police, sometimes to the point of clashes.

Protest organizer Anthony Bell said he understands why some act out: While change can come through peaceful protests, such as those led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., years of oppression has caused some to turn violent.

“I do not say the (violent) demonstrators are wrong, but I believe peaceful demonstrations are the best,” Bell said.

Many protesters believe police provoked demonstrators by showing up in riot gear and armored vehicles; police said they had no choice but to protect

themselves once protesters started throwing things at them.

Stockley shot Smith after high-speed chase as officers tried to arrest Smith and his partner in a suspected drug deal.

Stockley, 36, testified he felt endangered because he saw Smith holding a silver revolver when Smith backed his car toward the officers and sped away.

Prosecutors said Stockley planted a gun in Smith’s car after the shooting. The officer’s DNA was on the weapon but Smith’s wasn’t. Dashcam video from Stockley’s cruiser recorded him saying he was “going to kill this (expletive).” Less than a minute later, he shot Smith five times.

Stockley’s lawyer dismissed the comment as “human emotions” during a dangerous pursuit. St. Louis Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson, who said prosecutors didn’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Stockley murdered Smith, said the statement could be ambiguous.

Stockley left the police department and moved to Houston three years ago.

Kyle Duane Hoadley, 28, 404 N. Cherry St., was charged with fifth-degree theft 9:50 p.m. Thursday at the Law Enforcement Center.

According to a Creston Police report, Hoadley entered a Casey’s General Store and took and concealed eight packs of Magic collector cards. He then left the store without paying for them. Hoadley admitted to stealing the cards.

Hoadley was released on a promise to appear. ——————

Brandon Barrett, 20, 612 N. Birch St., was charged on a Union County warrant for violation of pretrial release on the original charge of controlled substance violation.

According to a Creston Police report, on June 13 Barrett was stopped for failure to stop at a traffic control light while riding a bicycle. During the stop a bag containing a green leafy substance with marijuana was discovered.

Barrett was being held without bond. —————— Tyrone Davis, 48, 607 W. Prairie St., was charged with second-offense operating while intoxicated 2:30 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of West Adams and North Sycamore streets.

According to a Creston Police report, Officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for careless driving after the driver did a burn out in the 100 block of North Elm Street. The driver was identified as Davis. Davis had an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. Davis consented to standard field sobriety testing which showed several signs of impairment. Davis refused a preliminary breath test.

Davis later consented to a Data Master breath specimen in which he provided a sample of .145 blood-alcohol content. Davis had one prior conviction for OWI and was charged with second-offense OWI. Davis was released on $2,000 bond. —————— Christy Grandfield of Afton reported a tailgate was taken off a 1973 Jeep J20 between 5:45 and 6:35 p.m.

According to an Adams County Sheriff report, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Wambold at the intersection of Highway 25 and 240th Street for traveling 70 mph in a 55 mph zone and for having an insufficient number of headlamps.

While speaking with Wambold, deputies detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A probable cause search was conducted and numerous items of drug paraphernalia were recovered. Deputies also located a small amount of marijuana and several rolled marijuana joints. A present juvenile was also cited for possession of a controlled substance and for drug parAdams County possession aphernalia.

Additional Sheriff charges are pending.

What’s Appropriate - Farms and Kids Many accidents to children on the farm occur when a child is doing something that is beyond his or her mental, physical or emotional ability. Children are more likely to be injured or killed than adults. Each year, hundreds of these children die and thousands are injured on the farm where they live, work and play.

Children are vulnerable to many of the same hazards as adults who live or work on farms, but they are far less capable of understanding those hazards. Although parents cannot completely child-proof a farm, they need to make it as safe as possible.

After slow start, Chiefs find groove in win KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — This is the law of the NFL: One week, you can look great.

The next week? Not so much.

In case you forgot that, the Chiefs’ 27-20 win over Philadelphia on Sunday before an announced crowd of 74,971 at Arrowhead Stadium served as a perfect reminder.

A week ago, the Chiefs were the toast of the NFL. Their season-opening win over New England opened eyes around the league, as they relied on a newfound dynamism and mental toughness to hand Tom Brady and Bill Belichick their second regular-season loss at home to an AFC opponent since 2007.

But for most of Sunday’s game, that performance seemed like ancient history, as the Chiefs — especially offensively — did not execute as efficiently as they did against New England.

Fortunately for the Chiefs, the resiliency they showed in New England — when they battled back to win after a quick Patriots start — would prove to serve them well on this day, as they managed to pull away late thanks to a few big defensive plays and some creative offensive play calling.

They’d need it all, however, to pull away from the Eagles (1-1).

The Chiefs (2-0) could tell by halftime this would be no walk in the park.

The Chiefs only led 6-3 at the break, as they could only eke out a pair of field goals against the Eagles’ smothering, aggressive front seven.

But while the Chiefs’ offense sought answers, their defense was on point. Led by Justin Houston — who finished with five tackles and caused a key turnover late in the game — they harassed quarterback Carson Wentz, sacking him twice, and generally bottling up the Eagles’ offense.

Problem was, quarterback Alex Smith was getting beaten up by the Eagles in the same manner. After absorbing a big blow in the second quarter — after which he got up slowly — he was sacked three times in first half.

Both offenses finally got untracked in the third quarter after making some halftime adjustments. The Eagles put together a scoring drive that was capped by a 16-yard touchdown catch by Alshon Jeffery, and the Chiefs’ non-existent running game finally found some life when Kareem Hunt sprinted through a huge role and outraced the Eagles’ defenders for a 53-yard touchdown.

After all that had gone wrong Friday night — a blocked punt leading to a Denison-Schleswig touchdown, a 73-yard punt return leading to another Monarch score, no gain on a fake punt setting up the Monarchs again — Creston/O-M still had a chance with 6:37 left, trailing by seven points, 57 yards from the goal line.

But, one of several illtimed 5-yard procedure penalties assessed to the Panthers Friday occurred on the next drive, on third-andnine, and the Panthers had to punt away the opportunity after an incompletion.

Denison-Schleswig responded with a 63-yard scoring drive eating up four valuable minutes on the clock. Then a pick six inflated the final score to 3414 for the first three-game

winning streak for the Monarchs in five years.

Denison-Schleswig takes a 3-1 record (2-0 Class 3A District 7) into this week’s home game against Glenwood, a 17-14 loser to Harlan on Friday. Creston/O-M, meanwhile, looks to get untracked at Atlantic, carrying a 1-3 overall mark and 0-2 start in district play.

Panther coach Brian Morrison said down-anddistance situations, many caused by the seven penalties, resulted in a night of repeated frustration Friday.

“It seemed like early we had them in a lot of three and outs. Our defense gave us a chance,” Morrison said.

“But, they had field position like crazy and they dominated us up front tonight. When you can load the box against us and we’re not completing passes, they have more hats than we can block.”

There were two passing combinations that clicked for the Panthers in quick trips to the end zone.

LENOX — The levee held for much of the first quarter for the Murray Mustangs before it burst Friday.

For seven minutes at the beginning of Friday’s 8-man, District 6 matchup, the Lenox Tigers and Mustangs competed fiercely, but turnovers, experience and the more-rounded nature of the Tigers came through to burst open the floodgates in a 60-0 Lenox victory.

“We had a slow start, and we discussed that after the game, and how that cannot happen on either side of the ball. Thankfully for our offense, our defense stepped up when we struggled in the first quarter to move the ball consistently,” Lenox coach Matt Malausky said. “Drew Venteicher moved back to the defensive position, and played really well. Aaron Schmitz and Brenden Christensen played their linebacker spots downhill and attacking. Derek Venteicher did a great job at his defensive end spot making some

Raiderettes and Wolverines run through Panorama PANORA — Mallory Kuhns’ 12th place finish in 23:35 in the B class of Thursday’s meet at Panorama led area cross country girls finishers, as Nodaway Valley finished in ninth place as a team.

Madison Van Otterloo’s 47th-place race helped Nodaway Valley beat several teams in close proximity to its team score.

Lenox has to move forward without two of its more critical athletes, with both Sam Donaldson (ACL) and Colton Hogan (shoulder) certain to miss an extended period of time, if not the rest of the season.

Kyler Christensen moved over to center in place of Derek Venteicher, who moved to fullback, and Malauksy was pleased to see the way both adjusted.

AFTON — Five turnovers and early defensive struggles did in the East Union Eagles on Homecoming night as Baxter’s offense exploded in a 72-50 win.

Baxter’s Braydon Aker threw the ball for a resounding 371 yards and eight touchdowns, six of which went to Travis Lindemoen.

Lindemoen had 11 catches and 267 yards through the air.

“They threw it in some very tight spots and had some experience over the last three years. I’m assuming the’ve been connecting for quite a while,” East Union co-coach James Hardy said about the Aker-Lindemoen connection.

E a s t Union ran for 348 yards, but turned the ball over five times. Wittstock “ W e looked at the film and we saw 100 good things happen for us and 3,4,5 that were detrimental,” Hardy said.

Sanden Cheers ran for 157 yards and four touchdowns.

Passing the ball, he was 6 of 16 for 168 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Matthew Wittstock had 125 yards on the ground and

a score, and also recorded 78 receiving yards and another score.

The Timberwolves’ defensive line continues to be a pleasant surprise for the program this season.

Chance Tepoel recovered two fumbles, had a sack and Tepoepl several tackles for loss. Logan Calkins recorded 11.5 tackles and recovered a fumble. Taylor Kuhn had 9.5 tackles as well.

Jacob Webb alone had three solo tackles for loss, and the defense as a whole had 10 assisted tackles for loss.

RED OAK — After suffering a loss to Class 2A 10th-ranked Treynor in pool play, Red Oak gained revenge in a 26-24, 25-13 championship victory in its own tournament Saturday.

Creston went 0-3 in a pool with both Treynor and the Class 3A No. 9-ranked

host Tigers, along with Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.

In the opposite pool, Class 2A fifth-ranked Sidney and Class 2A No. 15 Tri-Center advanced to the semifinals over Hawkeye 10 teams Clarinda (ranked 11th in 2A) and Harlan.

“You know it’s a tough tournament when Clarinda and Harlan don’t get out of pool play,” said Creston cocoach Mallory Peterson.

Creston nearly forced a third set in the best-ofthree pool match with Red Oak, falling 16-21, 22-24.

“In that second set we were up 15-8, 18-12 and

20-15 but couldn’t finish it,” Peterson said. “We had some errors and Serra Athen killed us with some good shots down the line.

We didn’t quite pass well enough out of serve receive to stop them from having runs.”

The Panthers pushed both Treynor and Abraham Lincoln to a third set, but came up short each time, 15-5 and 15-9.

Zach Murphy carried 19 times for 155 yards and three touchdowns, while Brad Phelps had 110 yards in 14 attempts and three touchdowns. Hunter Arends had the other scoring run.

Big plays continue to be the norm for Southwest Valley’s offense.

“We pretty much understood that we’re a triple option team and we do like to pass the ball a little bit,” Donahoo said. “As soon as you commit eight or nine guys to the box, we’re going to hurt you with Addison or Grant.”

WOODWARD — Mount Ayr piled up nearly 500 yards rushing in a methodical attack that held off the quick strike nature of Woodward Academy’s offense in a 48-32 victory Friday.

Anthony Ward III ran for 218 yards rushing and touchdowns of 70 and 85 yards for the Knights, while Galvester Robinson II passed to Deshawn Johnson for a 76-yard score.

The Knights pulled to within 29-26 at the end of the third quarter after trailing 29-7 in the second quarter. But Mount Ayr had a 19-6 advantage in the fourth quarter to improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in district play. Woodward Academy falls to 0-4.

Murray coach Taylor Fulton noted that his Mustangs played a “really great” first eight minutes.

“A couple quick turnovers and a trickle became a flood,” Fulton said.

Both teams induced punts and a turnover respectively to start the game, but Murray’s second punt, returned to the Mustang 11-yard line

Hunt’s score gave the Chiefs a short-lived 13-10 lead, one that was erased when the Eagles responded with a field goal that tied the game early in the fourth quarter.

But that’s when the Chiefs were able to lean on their resiliency to finish the job. On the Eagles’ next possession, Houston deflected a third-down pass that was intercepted by defensive lineman Chris Jones.

This gave the Chiefs the ball at Eagles’ 31 and set up the go-ahead score, a shovel pass from Smith to tight end Travis Kelce, who barreled through the defense and leaped over the goal line for a 15-yard touchdown that put the Chiefs ahead 20-13.

And while Smith finished the game with a respectable stat line, completing 21 of 28 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown, the Chiefs’ defense continued their assault on Wentz. Houston racked up the fourth of six sacks of the day on Philadelphia’s next offensive snap, which set up a three-and-out.

Fulton was happy to see the effort displayed by some of his younger players against Lenox’s reserves.

“I think they played pretty well against the second unit from Lenox there,” Fulton said. “We had almost an entire freshman team on the field out there at times and moved the ball pretty well.”

Later, after Erik Jaime kicked two field goals and running back Luke Staley scored the second of his two touchdowns to put the Monarchs in front, 21-7, the Panthers struck again through the air.

Second TD pass Smallwood had taken a hard shot to the ribs while releasing a pass five plays earlier, so sophomore Eli Loudon was in at quarterback. With 8:02 left in the game, Loudon connected with Evan Jacobson for a Panther touchdown and Jacobson’s kick closed it to 21-14.

Denison-Schleswig was forced to punt after three plays, giving the Panthers the ball with a one-possession deficit and plenty of time (6:37) to mount a drive.

But, third-and-nine turned into third-and-14 with another flag against the Panthers, and Denison-Schleswig took over at its 37 at the 5:03 mark.

By the time the Panthers got the ball back again, there was only 1:16 remaining and it was back to a two-score margin at 28-14. Quarterback Drew Polzin finished the drive with a 1-yard keeper.

On the second play of the ensuing drive, Denison-Schleswig linebacker Jacob Irwin sealed it by intercepting a Loudon pass and galloping 43 yards untouched for the touchdown that made it 34-14.

“The game was definitely tighter than the final score,” Denison-Schleswig coach Chad Van Kley said. “Creston is a good team. We’ll take it. Defensively we kept them to a lot of three and outs, and more importantly we never gave up the big run to either Smallwood or Swank.

Offensively we were sloppy, but to Creston’s credit, some of that sloppiness is just from their physicality.”

Successful candidates will work in our modern food processing production facility located in Osceola, Iowa, and enjoy competitive wages along with a comprehensive benefits package.
