On a hot early-September afternoon, Southwestern Community College sophomore Brenna Baker runs up a hill at Lakeview Country Club in Winterset. As she begins making her ascent, she shouts out encouragement. “Just look at my back. Don’t look at the hill; look at me.” Baker looks back and sees that Creston freshman Isaac Ralston is still following in her footsteps, running up the hill. The two work together as

a team – Ralston is a member of the Creston cross country team and Baker acts as his runner’s aide. As the two continue working their way over the 5K course, Baker continues to offer encouragement. “Remember, the faster you run, the faster you’re done.” Once they cross the finish line, Baker gives Ralston a high-five and they slowly make their way back to Creston’s camp, where Ralston is greeted by his teammates asking how he ran. “With cross country, we’ve always said there’s a spot for everybody,” Creston Head Cross Country Coach Pat Schlapia said. “Isaac has been welcomed. He’s a part of the team. He’s a part of our cross country family.”

Runner’s aide Ralston first began running cross country in middle school as a seventh-grader. Schlapia met with Ralston’s family, the Cres-

ton Middle School coaching staff and special education teachers. Together, they came up with a plan to have a runner’s aide to run with Ralston. Zack Peppmeier, who had recently graduated from Creston High School and was a member of Creston’s state-qualifying boys cross country team in 2013, served as runner’s aide during Ralston’s seventh-grade year. But Peppmeier transferred from SWCC to Iowa State after his freshman year. In stepped Baker, who had never run cross country before. “I was very nervous going into it because of the big responsibility,” Baker said. “I hadn’t really worked with anybody with special needs. It was obviously a big responsibility to take on. Talking to Zack and the coaches helped me make my decision. I’m really happy because of the amount of

satisfaction I feel from his results.” As a runner’s aide, Baker runs alongside, or sometimes in front of, Ralston during all practices and meets. She offers encouragement and helps keep Ralston focused. Baker said part of her responsibility as runner’s aide is to push Ralston to his limit and help him improve – whether that be running faster or walking less. “Brenna, she helps me focus on running. She helps keep me going and she is nice,” Ralston said. “She is one of my best friends.” RUNNERS | 2A

Attorney for victim’s family blasts Iowa board over delays DES MOINES (AP) — An attorney for the family of a woman mistakenly killed by an Iowa police officer lashed out Thursday at the Iowa Public Information Board for what he called “unconscionable” delays and errors in her case. Adam Klein, an attorney for Autumn Steele’s family, accused board members of mishandling complaints alleging that police have illegally withheld public records in her January 2015 shooting. Klein said they were hurting a grieving family.

Unbowed by the criticism, the board voted to delay the case further and rehear the merits of it — which it had already decided 10 months ago. That takes the case back to the beginning of the process, 20 months after the 34-yearold mother was shot and killed by a Burlington officer who was intending to fire at her attacking dog. Authorities have released a brief body camera clip of the shooting and a summary BOARD | 2A

AP, other media sue FBI for details on iPhone hacking tool WASHINGTON (AP) — The Associated Press and two other news organizations sued the FBI on Friday to learn who the government paid and how much it spent to hack into an iPhone in its investigation into last year’s San Bernardino, California, massacre. The lawsuit seeks records about the FBI’s contract with an unidentified vendor who provided a tool to unlock the phone belonging to Syed Rizwan Farook, who with his wife killed 14 people at a holiday gathering of county workers in December

2015. Gannett Co., which owns USA Today, and Vice Media LLC joined the complaint with the AP, seeking to learn more about the mysterious transaction that cut short a legal dispute in which the government sought to force Apple Inc. to unlock the phone. “Understanding the amount that the FBI deemed appropriate to spend on the tool, as well as the identity and reputation of the vendor it did business with, is essential for the FBI | 2A
