Creston Area Food Pantry settles into new location Proceeds from the O’Riley Center, a reception hall, will be given to the food pantry. ■

The Creston Area Food Pantry moved into its new location on the lower level of 417 Wyoming Ave. over the summer, distributing food at the location for the first time on Aug. 6. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, with tours of the pantry being given by pantry volunteers following the ceremony. At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the public is invited to attend the first organizational meeting of the Creston Area Food Pantry to establish its board of directors and begin
the process of applying for its own nonprofit status with the state of Iowa. “We’d like to get a group of people together so we can have a board of directors,” said Kathy Goodrich, program coordinator for Creston Area Food Pantry. “It’s kind of taken off. It’s been a whirlwind the last couple of months. A lot of positive things are going on.” Formerly located at United Church of Christ in Creston, the food pantry began moving into its new location in June. After hosting nearly 75 RAGBRAI riders on July 25, work began on transforming the former Assembly of God Church into the food pantry. Twenty-one volunteers helped move appliances out of the old food pantry location into its new location. “When we recognized there was a need for us to PANTRY | 2A

When Jessica White left Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines Sept. 2 , she left with the promise of a ring on her finger. White left engaged to Matthew Freese, both of Creston, who decided he wanted to spend his life

Romance Freese, 28, and White, 29, went on their first date in July 2015, about six years after they first met through a mutual friend. The two had reconnected when they began working at Bunn-O-Matic together.
“He didn’t tell me where we were going,” White said. “It was a surprise. Then he took me out to eat in Des Moines and he took me to the Funny Bone (a comedy club).” Since that first date, White gave birth to their first child together, Corbin, a little brother to White’s first son, Carson. Several weeks after Corbin’s birth, everything
changed.
Accident “It all kind of blurs together,” Freese described. The blurs were the accident he was in Aug. 31, from which he was flown by air ambulance to Des Moines. According to an Iowa State Patrol report, Freese, driving a 2004 Toyota west ENGAGED | 2A

Creston, Saturday evening at the conclusion of the Randy Hagle Memorial Poker Run. Event organizers Sterling and Lisa Johns estimaed about 140 motorcycles, as well as two party buses and various other four-wheel vehicles, participated in the poker run, which raised more than $5,000 for Hagle’s memorial at McKinley Park.
