YMCA offers new, creative workouts for health seekers By JAKE WADDINGHAM CNA staff reporter

Southern Prairie YMCA’s new fitness class is helping individuals with hectic schedules find time to workout. Fit in 30 is a new workout class during the lunch hour — 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. — for anyone wanting to gain fitness, but having trouble getting to the gym in the morning or evening. “We are trying to get more engagement for folks who are struggling to achieve their well being,” said Southern Prairie’s fitness coordinator Lynn Irr. The new class format is
part of a national effort by the YMCA called Activate America. Irr said the class was a creative effort to meet the needs of residents in the Creston community who want to get in better shape, but are constantly crunched Irr for time. ACE certified personal trainer Dana Phelps leads the class on Mondays and Wednesdays. The groups starts with an active warm up known as dynamic exercise. The core of the workout mixes kickboxing, body weight movements, weight
training and several other workout techniques. The class ends with light stretching. “It is a mix of everything and it is intense, but it can be modified for individuals at all levels,” Phelps said. “We have a wide range in the class ... SWCC students, seniors and people on their lunch break.” Phelps said a workout around the lunch hour also combats boredom and temptations to snack during the afternoon. Senior workouts Another new program — senior functional walking — is geared toward senior citizens to help them stay functional and independent. It meets Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 10:15 to 11 a.m. “We found it was a time a large majority of our senior members were available,” Irr said. Phelps directs that class, as well. She said the class uses a majority of the gym walking and shuffling back and forth to build muscle strength. Advanced and capable members can add weights or resistance bands to increase the difficulty. “Newcomers don’t need to feel stressed about trying to keep up with everyone else,” Phelps said. “The class is easily adjusted for different fitness levels. adjusting the difficulty of the workout for beginners through experts. The YMCA has redesigned several of its other programs by adding levels — one, two and three — so the instructor of the program knows the experience of each participant. Health seekers “A health seeker is defined (by the YMCA) as people in the community who are struggling to obtain well-being,” Irr said. “For some people, it is hard to step into the Y. Sometimes they don’t know how to use the equipment or feel they won’t be able to keep up in a class.” That’s why Irr and Rose Wignall developed a class

IOWA’S
AMES — Crestonians got the celebration started Monday night on the first stop of WHO13’s RVTV final tour for the Iowa and Iowa State rivalry series. Fans will join Keith Murphy and Andy Fales during their final stop of the RVTV tour in Ames for pregame tailgating. Kickoff is slated for 5:05 p.m. at Jack Trice Stadium and will be telecast on Fox Sports 1. This will be Iowa’s first road game of the 2013 season. Sophomore quarterback Jake Rudock is expected to get the start for the Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes got off to a rough start of the 2013 campaign, falling to Northern Illinois 3027. They rebounded last weekend, defeating Missouri State and will carry an overall record of 1-1 into Ames. Iowa State fell in their first game of the season to the University of Northern Iowa Panthers. The Cyclones had an off weekend to prepare for the Hawkeyes. that meets every Monday in a small group or individual setting. Wignall has experience as a counselor and personal trainer for the YMCA. The cost is $20 for members or $30 for community participants. Each week, Wignall meets with the individuals or groups to create a social support group to help reenforce healthy living. “It really is a pathway to a healthier you,” Irr said. The YMCA also extended its yoga class. The traditional yoga class still meets Mondays and Wednesdays. The new class, on Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:15 to 5 p.m., is a variety of power yoga.

Voter turnout
About 12 percent of eligible voters turned out for the whole school election, including Creston and East Union School districts, Sept. 10. Sandy Hysell, Union County auditor, said the turnout is down a little from the previous school board election of 14 percent, but considerably higher than previous elections that were typically 10 percent or less. Turnout is lower in local
elections compared to state and national elections.
Balloon Days parking
There will be no parking on South Cherry Street during the Balloon Days weekend in Creston. Signs will go up Friday, Sept. 20 and removed Monday, Sept. 23. The temporary parking ordinance happens every year to allow emergency vehicles easier access and for general safety of pedestrians.
Drought update: rain chances increase in weekend forecast Dry conditions continue across Iowa as a wet spring quickly faded into a “flash drought.” More than 41 percent of the state is in severe drought conditions. Union County is split by severe and moderate drought conditions. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker said the past two years Iowa has experienced drought conditions, but the two dry spells had a lot of differences. Temperature, subsoil moisture levels and in-
consistency of rain all played factors into the drought. The National Weather Service forecast shows southwest Iowa getting a break from the recent heat with temperatures dropping into the low 70s over the weekend. This weekend will also be the best chance for rain for the area — a 60 percent chance of percepitation Saturday night into Sunday. Rain chances continue through Tuesday.
