With the sun beating down on a warm Saturday afternoon, Wally Miller and a handful of other volunteers work tirelessly to preserve the log cabin located at the Union County Historical Village on the south end of McKinley Park. The logs that make up the cabin have expanded and contracted over time, allowing for water to seep in between the logs and damage them. Miller and his helpers chink the cabin, which Miller believes was originally constructed around 1875, in order to preserve it and
protect it from further water damage. Chinking is the process of placing filler between the logs of the cabin. At the time the cabin was originally built, materials would have included moss, clay, straw and even animal droppings. Saturday, Miller used foam pipes and Log Jam, a product similar to caulk that moves along with the logs as they expand and contract. “That’s our main goal with this thing is to preserve it as long as we can,” Miller said. “This is the best way we know.”

Iowa officers issue more tickets for texting while driving ing. The previous law only allowed motorists to be ticketed for texting if they also committed another traffic offense. Maj. Randy Kunert heads the state patrol’s field operations. He says officers are using unmarked vehicles and plain-clothed troopers to catch motorists. The Legislative Services Agency says the fine for texting while driving is $30, but court costs bring the total cost to about $100.

By 1876, there was someone residing on the site of the cabin in Lincoln Township, but the Emhoff family was not seen in historical records in Iowa until 1885. In 1889, Martin Emhoff, Jacob’s son, moved near the cabin site in Lincoln Township. In 1906, William and Joseph Emhoff purchased the parcel of land the cabin sat on. William’s wife Stella and their seven children continued to live in the cabin from 1930 to 1955, during which time another house was constructed around the cabin. The family used the

DES MOINES (AP) — The Iowa State Patrol has responded to a new texting-while-driving state law by issuing 230 tickets in the past two months, far more than troopers issued all last year. The Des Moines Register reports that troopers issued less than 175 tickets for texting in 2016. The new law took effect July 1 and lets officers issue citations if they observe a motorist texting while driv-
Miller has dedicated hours to researching the history of the log cabin in addition to laboring away chinking it. “I will applaud the people out there for all the work they’ve done on maintaining those buildings and also what they’re d o i n g Gerharz now in the museum trying to update what they do have,” said Ellen Gerharz, Creston Chamber of Commerce executive director. “I think it’s an opportunity for people of all ages to come and see what it was like 125, 150 years ago.”
Creston Community School District’s Board of Education election is set for Tuesday, Sept. 12. The terms of current board members Sharon Snodgrass, Galen Zumbach and Tom Eagan are all set to expire. Snodgrass and Zumbach both filed paperwork to run for another term. “Tom Eagan has decided not to rerun. He did not take out papers,” said CCSD Business Manager Billie Jo Greene. “So, we have one position that will be what we call a write-in for that position.” School board members serve four-year terms. Absentee ballots became available Wednesday, Aug. 23 and must be postmarked on or before Monday, Sept. 11 to be counted. Over-thecounter absentee voting can be done until Friday, Sept. 8. Below are candidate profiles for Snodgrass and Zumbach, both of whom are running for another term.
2012. I applied to fill a vacancy on the board at that time.” Why do you want to remain on the board? “I like being able to serve our community on the board. Now that I am retired, there is more time for me to be involved in Snodgrass this type of service. I felt that my experience in education was/ continues to be helpful in working with the CCSD School Board. I’ve worked my whole life working with young people in some capacity. This job is indirect, but I do think about the effects of decisions the board makes on our youth.” What goals do you have for the school district moving forward? “We always need to have the goal of doing what’s best for students. Improving student achievement is critical for us as a district to meet state and national goals. Improving the learning environment, instruction, and opportunities to technology has been important for some time. We must always continue to monitor student needs and strive to meet them to truly help each and every individual student. “I believe we’ve made good improvements in our facilities continuously in the last few years. We finally got a bus barn built. We’ve upgraded facilities for safety, for handicapped accessibility, and for
