Updates made to CCHS facilities

Judge won’t move trials in Iowa teen’s starvation death WEST DES MOINES (AP) — A judge has decided the trials won’t be moved out of Polk County for the adoptive parents of a West Des Moines teenager who officials say was starved to death. Court records say Judge Karen Romano ruled Monday that Nicole Finn and Joseph Finn II have not sufficiently shown that pretrial publicity has ruined any chance for fair trials in Polk County.

The athletic wing of Creston Community High School features a new look for visitors when school and athletic competitions begin this fall. Updates have been made in the gymnasium, weight room and athletic hallway. One of the most noticeable changes is a new decal at center court in the gymnasium. The gym floor used to feature the old panther head logo at center court, but now features Creston

Community School District’s C logo. The red C with white and black trim sits on top of a gray background designed to look like floorboards. The new decal also has a solid line running all the way across it, making it a legal center court. The old panther head logo did not have a center line across it, which technically was not a legal center court since basketball officials could not tell where the line was to know if a player had gone over and back. “Steve (McDermott) has worked hard since he got here on branding, or at least

getting it down to a manageable insignia instead of five different panthers Messerole and three different C’s,” CCHS Principal Bill Messerole said. “I think when I got here we probably had 30 different panthers.” The new decal joins the new panther head logo on the wall, along with a large hanging American flag donated by the South Central Iowa Community Founda-

tion and handrails on the gym bleachers as upgrades made over the past several years. The new paint job significantly brightened the gym. The south wall of the gym also used to house banners sporting each team’s logo from the Hawkeye 10 Conference. Those banners have been removed and will be replaced by one sticker featuring all 11 school logos in the conference. “It’s brighter with it open instead of hanging banners all across that wall,” Messerole said. “We kept our SCHOOLS | 2A

Nicole Finn is charged with murder and other charges in the death of 16-year-old Natalie Finn. Her trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 23. Joseph Finn II is charged with kidnapping, neglect or abandonment and child endangerment. His trial is set to begin Nov. 27. The judge says she’ll reconsider her ruling if it becomes apparent that further pretrial publicity will prevent fair Polk County trials for both.

Tip leads to arrest of suspect in Missouri officer’s death KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A man charged in the shooting death of a western Missouri police officer has been arrested after an alert driver provided a tip that the fugitive was wandering within miles of where the killing took place, a law enforcement official said. The driver reported seeing Ian McCarthy walking along a state highway near Bucksaw Marina, just east of Clinton, and he was arrested without incident late Tuesday, Sgt. Bill Lowe of the Missouri Highway Patrol said at a news conference later that night. The arrest ended a two-

day manhunt that began after 37-year-old Clinton police officer Gary Michael was shot to death during a traffic stop Sunday night in Clinton, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Kansas City. Michael and McCarthy had exchanged gunfire before the officer died and the driver fled. Lowe said McCarthy, 39, was suffering from a gunshot wound when a patrol trooper arrested him. Lowe declined to provide specifics about the gunshot wound except to say “Officer Michael was heroic TIP | 2A

$1M bill deposit attempt leads to Iowa man’s drug arrest SIOUX CITY (AP) — Authorities say a man who tried to deposit what he presented as a $1 million bill has been charged with drug possession in Iowa. A criminal complaint says Sioux City police officers were called to a Northwest Bank branch Thursday to talk to a man who tried to deposit the bill into his account. The officers asked 33-year-old Dennis Strickland whether he had

any more of the bills and that a baggie fell out when he emptied a pocket. The complaint says the baggie contained methamphetamine. The U.S. Treasury Department says it has never produced a $1 million bill. Iowa court records say Strickland is scheduled to be back in court Monday. His attorney hasn’t returned a call Tuesday from The Associated Press.
