The LC Open Trap Shoot competition raises funds and awareness for a local clinic that supports young men and women. The fourth-annual LC Open Trap Shoot event is set for Sept. 9, at the High Lake Outdoor Alliance shooting range, located north of Afton near Three Mile Lake. “LifeCare Resource Center. Oh yeah, that’s the motivating force here,” said Rick Ramaeker of Creston. The event will kick off around 9:30 a.m. and will run into the early afternoon. The range will open at 8:45 a.m. for any who wish to get some practice rounds beforehand. The event is open to any-
one 12 years of age and older. The competition will be broken down into age divisions with 12-, 13- and 14-year-olds making up the younger division, 15-,16and 17-year-olds qualify for the middle division and anyone 18 years and older will be in the top division. Ramaeker said each division will be broken into two separate experience levels, novice or experienced. Participants can also form teams to compete for prizes as well, and are not required to be in the same age or skill division to shoot together. “We plan on doing teams,” said Ramaeker. “And those guys that won it last year think they’re going to win it this year.” Trophies and prizes will be handed out to the top
three places of each division around 1:30 p.m. when the competition is expected to end. “Some of the things we are going to have are a turkey feather painting by Chancy Walters,” said Ramaeker. “ H e ’ s donating one of his paintings which is kind of a famous thing for Raemaker a sportsm a n . Then, there are going to be hitch covers with Creston, Mount Ayr, Southwestern Community College and East Union mascots for their schools.” Other prizes will be donated by local businesses such as Creston Farm and

Absentee ballots for the Sept. 12 school board elections are now available at the Union County Courthouse. Absentee ballots must be postmarked by Sept. 11 or before to be counted. Atthe-counter voting is open through Sept. 8. Voters can also receive absentee ballots by mail via the Iowa Secretary of State website.
For more information about school board candidates and election information, see a future edition of the Creston News Advertiser for details. Voters will also decide, in a referendum included in the school board ballot, whether to continue the 6-cent levy for SWCC that has been in place for the past 10 years. All 15 Iowa community colleges have 6-cent levies in place. The levy must be approved by a simple majority of voters. Funds gathered from the 6-cent levy are used by SWCC to purchase instructional classroom equipment BALLOT | 2A
Democratic Party fundraiser leaders snub Iowa candidate DES MOINES (AP) — A Democratic Iowa congressional candidate known for expletive-laced rants against the Republican incumbent has been excluded by her own party from a speaking role at a fundraiser. The Des Moines Register reports that the Polk County Democratic Party committee voted not to invite Heather Ryan to speak at next month’s Steak Fry. Ryan, a businesswoman from Des Moines, is seeking the Democratic nomi-
nation in the 3rd District to challenge GOP Rep. David Young. Ryan has repeatedly used expletives to deride Young. Party chairman Sean Bagniewski says Ryan may still attend the event and is not prohibited from speaking at other party-sponsored events. But officials cite the need for civil language by speakers at the televised event that will be open to children. Ryan says the snub is an attack on her freedom of speech.
